The Warrior turns to the guardian and says, “Did you hear something?”
Guardian replies, “No, but how’d the elementalist die?”
(edited by SoPP.7034)
Look into ‘d/d bunker’ elementalist for WvW. They unleash some decent damage and have good survivability and mobility. Perfect for WvW and PvE setting, haven’t used extensively in dungeons.
Make sure to have a staff handy. Switching to ranged attacks will solve most problems, such as when you’re in a keep.
For Mesmer’s most people look at Glamour builds for WvW, you can also look up Shatter builds to. Probably depends if you’re more interested in dueling or team support.
Any general search should bring up some info.
EDIT: This thread will give you some ideas for WvW.

(edited by SoPP.7034)
For WvW I would recommend neither. I know some will disagree, but these classes are poor choices for most WvW players.
Dueling would increase interaction between players which is exactly what an MMO is about.
Kudos to SoR this week, you guys come out guns blazing. 2nd part of the week is a different story but that’s the name of the game.
In all seriousness it’s been a great week and I want the SoR community to rally and come out fighting again. Don’t get a hit in the face like others servers have and just give up.
I think the 2nd guy in the video may not have been cheeting.
If he was hacking, he would have done a very very bad job. (of course, if he needs hacks, he must be very bad^^). But the only time it seemed “obvios” may have been a huge lag. Other than that a thief can be that mobile…
I think its quite clear at the 22.55 min mark that the 2nd thief speed hacks. He covers a huge amount of distance in a short period of time. Remembering as well that at this stage the d/d bunker ele has an ally with him who doesn’t do a ‘slideshow’ at all. Up until that point I would have agreed with you.
This is a valid point. And yes, the Thief is a profession that is more sensitive to hacking because the underlying design of the profession makes it harder to spot, and thus harder to get banned.
Observe.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTTzzg7UBqoSpeed hacking, both Thieves. And they both made sure to use it as much as possible while in Stealth. So its harder to tell if they hacked or if its just Thieves being Thieves.
That’s a great vid for 2 reasons:
1) Great use of d/d bunker ele.
2) Highlights my point PERFECTLY. Everything that human thief does could be described as great ability, up until the 22.55 min mark where this ‘skill’ is revealed. I am curious however, what server were these thief’s from?
This game has far less incidences of hacking then most and in all my hours of WvW, I have only experienced it twice, it was a necro and a ranger. Are there people hacking out there, sure, but who cares it has so little meaningful impact it is not worth dwelling on.
That’s assumption, the majority of hackers aren’t stupid and would use script not easily seen by ArenaNet.
Orbs were removed by ArenaNet because they couldn’t stop the flyhacking that was occurring.
By assuming hacking in small and meaningless is the same as giving up and encouraging more to to it.
Sounds like your problem including your example has more to do with speed hacking, what does this have to do with thieves? Because you think they are hacking then it must be happening?
OP is saying you wouldn’t be able to tell if a thief is speed hacking or not. Yes, they have a lot of mobility skills. It’s also just as easy to stack stealth and speed away without being seen though.
Thanks Renny. In addition a thief’s stealth helps to camouflage any hacks.
Also, that would mean that something else is off if the shot fired after stealing is not a sneak attack.
the order of effects currently is
steal -> shot animation started -> stealth-> shot connects -> stealth brokenand not
steal -> stealth gained -> sneak attack shot -> stealth brokenThe issues probably are connected, I just wanted to point out that projectiles already travelling/animations already started seemingly can be an issue with stealth.
This is still an issue, I ended up taking it out of my trait build because it just doesn’t work as it should. The fact that I did a google search and it lead me to this thread with these statements doesn’t surprise me as it was something I’d already determined.
What did surprise me was the official response to this bug. Every other stealth skill cancels the auto attack, which you then have to initiate again.
EDIT: I just wanted to make it clear I support what wintermute said in addition to what I said. That is you don’t get the attack from stealth, which you should.

I hope scoring and other changes that are coming to WvW from ArenaNet reflect what we’ve seen this week. The week started very impressive and interesting and it would be great to highlight servers initial achievements instead of focusing only on end score.
What initial achievement is there? The weekend lead? I don’t understand what would need to be highlighted at the start of a week long match-up.
Sure, why not? Otherwise it’s just a week long game with an inevitable end, why not add incentives.
Thanks for the answers Josh, sorry aspects of the community insist on creating extreme points of view just to prove that they’re right.
So, we see thread after thread about people that can’t counter what a thief throws out. This is compounded by the fact that it’s much harder to tell if a thief is for example speed hacking.
Given the amount of information that is handled client side and not server side a stealth speed hack is not impossible and it can easily be put down to stealth into Infiltrator’s Arrow or Shadow Return.
If for example a Guardian speed hacks, it’s obvious, they magically speed up and disappear from the fight. If a thief disappears, well, its because they used one of their skills.
This doesn’t include ways that hackers can use fly or teleport hacking all while hidden under stealth that can be rationalised with ‘skill’.
When thief exits stealth a black swirl shows up at hist feet, if you click on that you will target him, also tabing after they appear works to and you’re sure to target him if not a lot of other PC/NPC are around.
Only a thief player would say this with a straight face.
Since I don’t know where he’s going to come out of stealth and since he usually goes straight back into stealth, he never actually appears on screen. Most of the time I don’t even see a black swirl. The times I do see it, he goes back into stealth immediately so no targeting. If you’re saying that .5 of a second SOMEWHERE on screen is enough to target him, you have far better reactions than I do.
I have to reinforce what transtemporal is saying about the ‘black swirl’ and if anything his politeness in answering you. Stealth stacks so the reality of using it to target is not legitimate as they may still be stealthed. Also the context makes a HUGE difference of how you can possibly use it in a closed/open area as a group lay down aoe or are you solo. Target the swirl, lol, seriously.
I hope scoring and other changes that are coming to WvW from ArenaNet reflect what we’ve seen this week. The week started very impressive and interesting and it would be great to highlight servers initial achievements instead of focusing only on end score.
STEALTH!
Has created controversy across all MMO’s that have used it.My question is, wth was ArenaNet thinking?
It works in other games but only because they have ways to reveal stealthed enemies. They should really implement some way to reveal stealted characters, it could be something like a potion that is sold by karma and/or some utility skills. That would fix alot but for thieves it’s somehow deeper, it’s a combination of stealth with high mobility and high burst.
Unfortunately ArenaNet has its head up its kitten. Lets nerf AoE, lets keep an eye on d/d bunker ele and lets close theards that talk about thiefs -.-
It’s worse. While you can see more mobs in the distance and gauge better how many enemies are there, the experience is completely unpredictable now.
I have no idea in big fights if someone suddenly pops in front of me if they are friend or foe until i highlight them, which distracts from the fight. That and the appearing/disappearing invaders, which makes it harder to track one target or a small part of the large group.
Previously it was much more stable. You knew who your guys were, if you saw some effects in the distance you knew there was a mob there. The challenge was to determine how many, which you could do by inching in slowly, attempt to strafe the group.
Really tho, its a different dog with different fleas. WvW gets no <3 from ArenaNet. It’s that adopted step-son that no one wants to talk to.
I tend to be blissfully ignorant to whats worth money and have a short-term memory. So, if I do by chance come across something thats worth money and KNOW its worth money, it will be sitting in my inventory.
Yes its a bot. They are becoming more and more sophisticated.
At the beginning it was a ranger doing laps with its bear. Nowdays they use speed/teleporting hacks. I’ve seen the ones you’ve seen and as you said it happens so fast that by the time you’ve gone ’what’s that? that’s strange, oh it’s a bot, I should report it!’ they’re gone.
I’m tired of fighting JQ at this point not going to lie. While we fight our hearts out against guilds we once fought on other servers and have good fights, we go to sleep and wake up to +400 PPT and fully upgraded keeps from Euro Prime time.
I understand and feel your pain. SoR has to deal with a couple of months of that from BG. Same issue, except they were ticking away at 600+ then. Heh
Somehow I get the feeling he didn’t mind facing JQ when SoS was winning…
I would have said mesmer as it requires coordination to get people to use viel and portals properly.
Ive observed good commanders try to coordinate it and especially PUG mesmers are just not reliable. They don’t know distance of portal or where a portal should be placed.
In EB one time the commander must have said 6 o’clock to smc inner gate a dozen times with regards to the 5 golems we had. The first mesmer took the golems to south outer, even tho the wall was down, the next portal took the golems to 3 o’clock inner, all we did was display our golems for the zerg to wipe. One mesmer commander may not have saved the golems that day, but maybe it would have.
Great match up this week, one of the best weeks yet. I’m really disappointed that there are still QQ people because this week has seen each server go back and forth, with strengths and weaknesses.
Don’t get upset because you were render dead a dozen times or whatever else, if anything blame ArenaNet for the games limitations.
Well done to all servers, see you all out there.
JQ has never been a weekend server, if we are within 10-15k of SoS on Sunday it’s a win in my book. Should get interesting down the stretch. Always fun to see the excitement new servers bring up to T1. Long queues aside, some pretty fun fights thus far.
JQ players are all multimillionaires. They party hard on the weekend, play hard during the week.
Queue’s are universal, it’s not just the upper tiers.
It’s either deliberate or an accident.
STEALTH!
Has created controversy across all MMO’s that have used it.
My question is, wth was ArenaNet thinking?
That’s similar to what I do.
Guild and WvW is where I get my socialising from in this game. Everything the OP has said is pretty much on par with my experience. I’d raised these concerns during the BWE to no end.
Sounds like the original founder was naive. They shouldn’t have shared their guild with someone else.
Perhaps I’m being harsh but I can only imagine that the person whose now in control, has little to no respect for the foundations of the guild.
As people have said, he could have edited the settings so as not been in a position to get demoted.
Based on current scores we would see the tier 1 servers of:
Sea of Sorrows
Sanctum Of Rall
Jade Quarry
Drop to the following tiers:
Sea of Sorrows = tier 3
Sanctum of Rall = tier 4
Jade Quarry = tier 5
Based on current scores from other tiers we would see match ups such as:
Jade Quarry
Tarnished Coast
Henge of Denravi
Different dog with different fleas.
What are you on about….
Dungeons: FotM, Ascended gear
PvE: Mad King, Lost Shores, Wintersday etc
sPvP: New maps, regular updates
WvW: Orbs (removed), Break Out events
For the longest time WvW was the only aspect of the game where content was removed.
….boasting how it could handle huge dogfights so well without seeing the performance issues other MMO’s would suffer with such large scale activities… except it cant handle it in any part of the game thats sees similar activites…
It takes time for people to render in LA, ok cool, now enter WvW and go see what happens when that enemy zerg renders right in front of you.
You said it yourself, it affects densely populated areas. Now got back to the top of this post, to that list I made, which area is impacted on most?
Assuming that RNG is functioning correctly.
Many aspects of GW2 don’t function correctly. Weapon swaps with sigil’s where some perform accordingly, others don’t. Runes that perform accordingly, where others don’t. Yes there are people who have tested for it.
But suddenly RNG functions perfectly with no issues.
The conspiracy theorists are wrong. It’s not because people get favoured deliberately, its much more accidental.
OR…WvW is low on their list of priorities. That’s the one I tend toward after the past six or so months of this kind of nonsense.
It’s what makes sense to me. Looking at WvW relative to the rest of the game:
Dungeons: FotM, Ascended gear
PvE: Mad King, Lost Shores, Wintersday etc
sPvP: New maps, regular updates
WvW: Orbs (removed), Break Out events
Cast refuge and hide to the side. The uninitiated attack the middle of refuge, the more knowledgeable will attack the outskirts of the ring. Its usually a combination of both that brings you undone. Safely doing that the hackers out there can then teleport/speed/fly and whatever else away, because no one sees it.
You should right click on them, assuming you can before they stealth and report them for botting. I mean botting, it is kinda like hacking?
I <3 my thief, I do so much with so little.
Don’t hate me, because I’m beautiful.
Good call…Thieves obviously need a buff to keep pace with the indisputably OP Mesmer.
Yer its been awhile, lets start a new thief thread.
Thank you for the help, so this is why we have queues on every server with active population, even tough maps are empty compared to the last week, its because people are messing with the queue system, waiting for the travel to borderland timer to go down before re-entering the queue, and if they do press to travel, the massive duration and strain that all this causes on the servers prevents 30-40 other players from getting a pop in 1 hour, when in the previous week they had to wait 5-10 mins to enter a full map.
Somehow I am almost certain the sarcasm in this post will not be spotted.
I was tired but I now see the light. You actually typed something I would typically type but you have saved me the energy. Thank you, may God have mercy on our souls.
The reset only makes legitimate sense if they are looking to some how restructure the scoring system or WvW itself. Of course thats assuming that the scoring would rate servers differently and/or WvW mechanics were refined in such a way that the old scoring system would skew the new mechanics.
Even as I type this I realise that’s not what’s happening, more hope rather, but I really didn’t want to delete my paragraph. I apologies to everyone.
Here’s how to get the overlay working without graphical glitches:
1. Go to Settings→Plugins in TS3.
2 .Select Overlay and then Settings
3. Select GW2.exe in the Profile dropdown.
4. Uncheck all the Direct3D options, except for Direct3D 9 (which is what GW2 uses).
5. Switch to Input tab
6. Check “Enable Mouse Poll” and “Use in-game cursor”
7. Switch to extended, and check “Used ID3DDevice:present hook…” (This is what fixes the animations not showing in GW2)
Thanks to Winter Fall.3408
1-10 is boring, having to open skills, no weapon swap.
40-60 is a huge grind, personal story gets real lame and you want to get traits sorted but there’s no real point till level 80. You also realise that you’ve been forced to buy 3 traits books when you would have preferred to just buy the one end one.
I think lvl 30 is the the best ‘leveling’ level as its about this time personal story starts to get interesting. You get your elite and you start thinking seriously about your traits, from here it’s down hill till you hit level 80.
“Ultimate” 3: Conjure Staff Knockoff, conjure a weapon which is pretty much the staff five skill, except it doesn’t scale as well.
I was reading a thread about d/d bunker ele’s. One lol moment was regarding ‘Ultimate 3’ where the poster had something to the effect of ‘cast a skill that replaces your skill bar with skills your least likely to survive with’.
Until ArenaNet changes the mechanics of play, the use of such mechanics will not change.
While the guilds/people within the community help to prop up WvW the fact is its been lacking for some time.
In all seriousness the culling/rendering issue should have been solved before release. The fact that we are now 6 months in means either:
1) ArenaNet neglect WvW, as its not a priority
2) Are unable to fix the problems in WvW
3) Combination of both.
Thief = FIG JAM
NO
Any expansion should focus on more exciting replay-ability. I want to move away from generic questing (therefore levelling) and away from grind (fotm).
WvW is the least important aspect of GW2. It has received less attention/updates relative to any other aspect of the game.
Fixing the culling/rendering issues are just not a priority for ArenaNet.
Invisi enemy zerg…. I guess I’m used to it now, but that’s sad to become acclimatised to an inadequate system….
What throws me is that my allies render! The number of times I’ve seen someone pop in front of me which immediately puts me on the defensive because I assume its a thief. The old system was shocking, the new patch is a different dog with different fleas….
sections where you have to run
This game has none. If you are skipping, then this is a risk you are taking.
Has none? Skipping?
Yes dungeons do and no I don’t.
Even sections where you have to run, you cant WP if someone is in combat..
Its not even team orientated, all you do is run.
There was a particularly significant guild that took siege donations with them the day before they left the SoS server. Then went to EU WvW for a while and now has returned to NA WvW on the JQ server.
Particularly significant?
so transfer fee application cause jq stacked with players having full queue in all borderlands day and night including SEA prime time. Yet has any server with enough number to counter JQ. eventually some people might get demoraled and left. so anets…didnt see that coming huh
Pretty sure someone would have said something similar when SoS was winning all the time…
definitely but not before transfer fee. was still quite balanced between all t1 servers. By balanced I mean there was still a chance to win with tactics and so on. but u gotta admit that sos is not gonna win in row again. it is so obvious jq has outnumbered even they have full force online. by the way, i mean overall coverage not just NA.
JQ or SOS, whoever got mass transfer i would say the same.
I believe anets meant to balance www population by applying fee so that guilds would not simply transfer and produce hod and sbi. but it seems they missed out something. and see what happened now? please dont say it is balanced, we all know what the word means…
JQ is one of the original standing tier 1 servers, it had its highs and lows and yet still remains a robust community. While I’m sure many of the ‘instant win kids’ tried to transfer over, JQ was already ‘very high’ to ‘full’ when the 28th was announced. So how many people could get on the server? Only ArenaNet knows, for everyone else its a best guess and if a few new guilds/players QQ and quit JQ, the server will still remain strong given its foundation.
If it is a question of balance now, then its because JQ has presented its community better than SoS has. As far as I know, no significant guilds have left SoS which means they should have been looking to acquire more guilds to consolidate its position, not point the finger on how they missed out….
In the middle of a fight a message pops up saying the select area in WvW is finally free to enter. To accept immediately means death and penalty upon arrival in subsequent area meaning you have to disengage or conclude the fight.
The UI is highly invasive, it pops in the middle of the screen obscuring anything in front of you. It cannot be minimised of moved out of the way, it must be endured at a severe disadvantage during fighting or accepted and the ensuring death penalty that follows.
Please fix this.
I wouldn’t be surprised if some people dodged a bullet when it comes to exploits. I’m sure ArenaNet doesn’t catch everyone one who does, so some people turn a nice earning before ArenaNet closes the loop. Having said that you can buy gold with real life money to.
What I’m saying is that people will show off their wares in an attempt to show how great they are. To put things in perspective do these people come off as good players or good talkers? If you believe the latter they probably just did one of the above.
You probably earn a lot more money relative to most.
