Is AoE actually a problem? - Discussion Thread

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

SoPP.7034

It’s not enough problem that they should be focusing on it , they are playing with fire as some of their class designs are almost entirely AoE centric and have really poor single target options; and they are liable to make a lot of folks extremely upset.

I know a more important aspect to much of the community is actually overbearing single target burst damage, (aka thiefs). I don’t quite get how Anet has keyed in on AoE as being a bigger problem when almost nobody actually complains about it.

It just doesn’t seem like a smart change to me. I don’t see very many people coming away from that update without having a really bad taste in their mouth.

This in particular makes sense to me. While the statistics may say something else I guess the real question here is GW2 only an e-sport?

For the average PvE and WvW player it’s not an issue, at all.

Meanwhile we see thread after thread after thread of rendering issues and the thief stealth ability around it it.

Rendering issues should have been solved months ago. Instead we’re here talking about nerfing AoE…….

Some commanders are hardworking and very efficient. I give them siege and thank them for doing a good job.
I think it makes a nice change to the rants I see in forums/team chat from people who say “If I had a commander pin…..” All the power but no responsibility….

Yup, price is death or find a way to get out of combat before the timer expires. Your choice.

You’re right, I mean it’s not like the OP had a point and we could think of a cooldown system or look at adjusting the UI notification.

I have a particular styalised way I like my female toons to look. I want them to represent their classes but in the case of heavy armour I don’t want them to look like a tin can, concurrently I don’t want my light armour wearers to look like potato sacks.

In particular the Sylvari have glowing animations. You NEED less armour to see it.

Honestly this is more political than anything else. I don’t want people in bikinis and realistically, if you care about the game, who does? So do we really have to get on the bandwagon about objectification issues.

It’s a family game and ArenaNet knows this and will cater for this audience.

So settle the kitten down and let us create some toons which actually look fashionable.

FoWSC GW1 & the Holy Trinity

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

SoPP.7034

Shadow Form did more for stepping outside the Holy Trinity than anything I’ve seen so far in Gw2. While MT is specifically there to control aggro, T1 and T2 hold very unique roles outside the Trinity.

What took ArenaNet by surprise was just how the community could use SF in so many different ways, a Speed Clear of Frostmaw as an example.

Should a SC be based around one skill? Probably not, but if people didn’t want to conform they had the choice. Use their own heroes, wait for an event to come around to rally PUGs, there’s no choice in GW2.

The Dredge Fractal is a good example of some actually required team coordination, which, tbh ALL dungeons should have elements of. It has nothing to do with a build you have to run, weapon set required, indeed to quote myself. “in doing so created a generic play style that while accessible to everyone ultimately tailors to no one.” which is real issue here. You can play whatever you want, know one really cares, so long as everything progresses reasonably, but it offers generic play and allows for more and more people like this:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Confessions-of-a-Magic-Find-Leecher/first

As you said somewhere down the track ArenaNet may rejig the system to offer more variety, lets hope the foundation they’ve created lets them do that, personally I believe they can.

For the record I argued against making Dungeons easier:

FoWSC GW1 & the Holy Trinity

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: SoPP.7034

SoPP.7034

Any1 who is familiar with FoWSC or UWSC from GW1 knows that team composition wasn’t strictly ‘Holy Trinity’, what there was was a diversity that meant you could play more specific to your play style, or indeed your mood.

I went back to a FOWSC run for the first time today since GW2 release. While the limitations behind GW1 technology were rather obvious it became overwhelmingly apparent to me that the mechanics to make a successful run happen in FoWSC were impressive, more so for UWSC. Where some individuals play a greater role than others but ultimately everyone relies on one another to get a job done.

Long story short a Dungeon walk in GW2 feels slow and boring in comparison. Where people talk more about glitching and exploiting than having discussions around builds and what professions work best.

GW2 is different to GW1 and while I can appreciate that ArenaNet wanted to move away from concepts like using consumables to create Speed Clears. Have we in doing so created a generic play style that while accessible to everyone ultimately tailors to no one?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I have no doubt that bots are getting more complex in nature, having said that ArenaNet has banned A LOT of accounts.

The thing is, the more complicated the bots have to be, the less likely people will be able to implement such bots. But you will never completely eradicate bots from the game.

It’s worth highlighting this point. Many things people would like may very well be implemented down the track.

Comparatively speaking a GW2 dungeon walk feels so slow…. I literally find myself nodding off as I can do a lot with my guardian with little concentration.

In GW1 u had to Ebon jump up the line or you would get left behind and possibly taken down by mobs in dungeons.

As a terra in FoWSC or UWSC you had a singular job that if you failed, broke down the entire run. If you wanted to be a more team player that was filled as well where you could play support/utility roles.

There’s just not that level of intensity or concentration required when I walk around GW2.

yea i do WvW alot and actually i am a commander! and have spent countless hours on my main (My Necro) and that’s why i am looking to change it up a bit :P

Shame you can’t transfer commander titles between toons.

I’ve seen a number of commanders get bored of running the same toon in WvW all the time and as soon as they try take an alt they get asked to roll their main so they have commander icon again.

I’d go so far as to say that some commanders resent this and would even be inclined to play less WvW as a result.

PLEASE GIVE ME SUGGESTIONS!?!?!?!

Do you level in WvW at all? I found it good to get past the early level grind.

Find a commander and run supply for them to be useful. It doesn’t require as much concentration as PvE and if you’ve found a good commander you will cap a lot which yields great xp.

I have many level 80 alts which now are geared 90% perfectly for my play style and I pick them up and use them when I feel like using that type of toon.

PvE servers? checks server list
There are no “PvE servers”. If you haven’t noticed YET, all servers are PvE except when you willingly enter the World vs. World or structure system.

So I really don’t know what you are talking about. Also in Maguuma server I come across a good amount of people in every zone all the time. Yesterday I went to “out of the way ones” like Fields of Ruin, Malchors Leap and that horrible forgotten place Timberline Falls, all three of these had people in them.

but honestly, it’s SOOOO boring if no one has started it and I participate in it hoping that maybe someone else will join. and suddenly theres an active PvE community again.

Do you advertise in map chat that an even is up? I do and people always show up. Sounds like you are not very proactive at this and you are “hoping” for people to show up. Also is nobody has started the event you find it boring? Sorry but I think you are the problem

Do you advertise every time, for each DE you come across and patiently wait for people to turn up? Are people patient with you if you’ve advertised an event that rewards them for very little?
Calling me the problem is fine, which also includes a number of people that have commented above. What you should considering is that by stating people are the problem and that they need to be proactive might get you a few supporting comments but ultimately if PvE is unrewarding for people at best will stop doing it and at worse stop playing GW2.

I like hanging in EB JP

in WvW

Posted by: SoPP.7034

SoPP.7034

and I’m not the only one.

EB JP is one of the few places where good skirmishes break out.

Most encounters in the WvW environment are who can out zerg each other when you are out in the open and who can out siege each other when you are attacking/defending objectives.

The EB JP is an interesting environment for more diverse encounters. Where you quick form into small groups to assist each other, come across small encounters and help turn the tide, observe enemy encounters and decide if to be friend or foe to a particular side (if at all).

Admittedly even a lot of the EB JP has deteriorated into siege and portalling wars, but the aspects I mentioned are still there.

Its a particular play style that is just not seen anywhere else in the game and it would be great to see this developed in a way where it more obviously benefited your server instead of (mostly) being complained about as a resource drain. What I see now is people secretly peel off from the EB war and hop into the portal before anyone notices.

The JP creates a unique fighting environment that would be great to enhance and develop more. It has the potential to create dynamic PvP encounters which rely on PvP abilities but various aspects can change the tide of battle making it much more dynamic than your typical sPvP setting.

WvW jumping puzzle

in WvW

Posted by: SoPP.7034

SoPP.7034

The biggest issue is siege at the top of the arena. There are successful counters to this but it involves either a) your server massing and just zerging the top (ArenaNet <3 it’s zerg’s) b) a quick mesmer with the Mad King Backpack running past invisible and teleporting people up 3) building counter siege.

It is a fail on ArenaNet’s behalf.

They have traps you can activate through out the puzzle but are completely useless when compared to setting up siege.

Siege shouldn’t be in the puzzle other than that, anything goes. My guess however is that the coding for removing it from WvW in the JP only is complicated.

What I would like to see is an option to auto-enable/disable town clothing upon entering a town.

The fact that I have to manually switch to town clothes every time I enter one makes it feel like a choir.

I like to mix the look of my characters up, so in allowing us to toggle auto-town clothes would be sweet. For those who have purchased multiple skins they may even appreciate a randomisation option.

It may not be high priority for many out there, but it’s still be a cool idea.

Managing to look more or less like Thrall mobs, they are dull and dark in colour that while GW2 is deep in lore, Risen are incredibly uninspiring.

NOW fighting branded is much more interesting, they just ooze great design. They should be given more development in the future as the GW2 universe expands to fight the other dragons.

You know what I find curious is that when I played GW1 (which was a lot) I would hope against hope to have a BDS (coveted weapon) drop from chest. While the chance was remote, you always knew there was a possibility.

Playing GW2 and seeing the discrepancies that exist between skills/traits/runes/sigil etc. Where what’s indicated seemingly doesn’t occur or where things are vaguely defined it could really mean anything, has got me thinking.

Mf on paper may state ‘increases a player’s chance to receive uncommon loot from dead foes’, but does it?

It’s pushing into conspiracy theory stuff but honestly maybe it’s just general competence. Can we be sure that the number crunching that’s done at ArenaNet is up to scratch?

If The Lost Shores was any indication, what ArenaNet says is not always what happens.

I’d argue stealth gives thief’s elements of protection to.

In any event given the significant negative feedback placed on thief’s due to the rendering/culling issue with regards to stealth is there anyway that ArenaNet can make people respect what a thief does. That is without it feeling like a thief is exploiting something and concurrently not turning the thief into a useless profession?

Specifically even if ArenaNet resolve the issues around stealth will the community forgive and forget? Or has the communities superfluous experiences with thief’s meant that they will always regard thief’s negatively as current threads here indicated.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/wuvwuv/Most-annoying-class-to-deal-with-in-WvW/first

I actually did a little research on this and found a statement dated 3 March 2011 prior to GW2’s release which really stood out for me.

Fabius Bile said
“this gotta be the first screwup I see them make.

stealth assassin classes in MMOs are always a plain nightmare. They are simply overly popular, and will never have the playerbase happy.

as much faith as I have in ANet, im yet to see ANY developer make a fair rounded and balanced assassin-type class in any MMO, past or current.

They should have avoided stealth entirely".

http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/11/arenanet-interview-gives-new-details-on-the-guild-wars-2-thief/

The fact that these sentiments were aired over a year ago is interesting. Given the complexity of balancing such a profession it’s REALLY disappointing that ArenaNet has dropped the ball on this one.

I think I should make it clear that I have a level 80 thief and have had some ‘fun’ with it in WvW. I’ve also made alts and been on the receiving end of invisi rendering thief’s and I can honestly say it’s no ‘fun’.

As a community can we <3 thief’s without making them useless?

Sounds a bit over-analytic to me to say that this situation is happening in WvW. There are really much more straight forward ways on deciding what to do strategically. A prisoner’s dilemma would only exist in your mind.

Over-analytical? I’d argue that’s an over simplification but it’s still possible.

Exists only in my mind? The whole point of a theory is to explain something. Given the people and institutions involved it’s an aspect of Games Theory that should be considered.

While people like to think they are independent vessels of change, if you place them into a scenario with specific conditions in place you will find people uniformly behave the same each time.

We got decorations….

Every other part of the game has been enhanced since release.

Mad King, Lost Shores, Wintersday has provided additional content for every other aspect of GW2 except for WvW.

WvW by contrast has had content removed. ArenaNet was unable to counter the huge number of flyhackers that would break/steal orbs. As such the orbs were removed.

We did get the ‘outbreak’ NPC which was introduced, but it was designed to counter a server being 100% dominated. I wouldn’t call it an enhancement, rather trying to compensate for a mechanic that’s fundamentally flawed.

A significant number of people enjoy and play WvW but the community as a whole is left on the outer relative to the rest of the GW2 community. Wintersday has proven no different.

Thing is there is a choice in the game already and this has been discussed milion times before the game was released.

The only thing lacking is armor equality within the same sets (not all but great portion of light armors).

You realise you’re arguing against my points that support yours?
‘At the end of the day it’s about choice. If you don’t offer a choice either way across both genders you are painting yourself into a corner’.

It means evenly distributed and equal.

@ Jahva

Your grub is not the problem.

JQ came within 4k of 1st so SoS will make a point of keeping JQ down, concurrently SBI will want to ensure that they stay t1 so they will hit against JQ to maintain that. This will continue for the rest of the week unless significant changes occur and SBI creates an unassailable lead over JQ in 2nd. Most likely next week it will be SBI getting doubled teamed.

I wonder if anyone at ArenaNet is familiar with Games Theory. If they did they’d recognise the pointlessness of ‘outbreak’ it’s a small fix to a much bigger problem.

You can’t stop human behaviour.

how to counter thieves

in WvW

A lot of talking has started swinging towards D/D ele’s and they certainly are hard targets to take down which will no doubt need balancing. But a lot of what ele’s do is respected, what a thief does is at best annoying, at worst infuriating.

Specifically with thief’s is the issue of stealth. Stealth was always going to be an issue, any MMO that has characters that use stealth has created divides within the community.

What ArenaNet has compounded upon here with the stealth issue is the rendering issue that distorts what thief stealth does.

Tbh I actually don’t know what ArenaNet can do. I think the community has developed an anti-thief/stealth sentiment which is going to be hard to recover from.

The name of this thread should be changed. It’s not so much about being skimpy is it more we just want to look fashionable. When was the last time a potato sack or tin can looked fashionable?

@ Berelious Red Dwarf!

On a more serious note I’d raised a thread in regards to merging the PvE between multiple servers, as numbers increase/decrease ArenaNet could respond accordingly.

EDIT: Another thought occurred to me that if a guild was to significantly participate in some of the bigger events that get neglected that guild gets some form of member wide buff. It would be another way to get participation in these events.

There was some great cooperation between SBI and JQ, shame it’s deteriorated into another Prisoner’s Dilemma.
