The Warrior turns to the guardian and says, “Did you hear something?”
Guardian replies, “No, but how’d the elementalist die?”
I guess my only concern at this stage is a server 100% dominating 2 others. Yes its war but having nothing to do isn’t fun either.
Higher server population and maximum player cap in world vs. world do not go hand in hand. Yes, there is a statistical advantage of this happening – since you can fall back to a higher number of players. But stochastics and ‘large numbers’ do not per se grant an advantage – since we are talking mere ‘probabilities’. It still could happen that you have a caped out world population – of which no one wants to (or can) play at night.
The free character transfer is NOT a core mechanic of the game – but instead a launch only initiative to balance out server population (to actually prevent the above mentioned ‘possible scenario’). It will go away at some point.
Thanks Ramon everything you have said makes sense and thanks for talking to us about this.
I think 2 weeks is going to be way too long. The server that is ahead after 24 hours, is still likely to be ahead after 1 week or 2 weeks. Also, if they are winning by a landslide, the other servers are going give up, so it won’t be fun for anyone to have to wait that long for a new matchup.
This has been my issue, I’ve seen it since BWE. If there is no system to adequately balance servers then games should be kept shorter.
Oh dear, we would have been kicked.
However we were already having our kitten kicked so does that balance it?
Can’t w8 for JQ to get kittened
So, there’s been a number of posts. EB puzzle, griefing etc etc
But isn’t the topic title THE thing that is creating the most issues for people?
Obviously you are supposed to prevent the opposition from getting to the end, any sensible person understands this.
The use of siege tho, in that particular area is so disproportionate that any half-assed player can hold off a mass of people with minimal effort.
Im a GW2 fanboi, so, yes.
So, long story short lets try to keep this thread strictly to the following:
How long should WvW matches run for?
Imo given the balancing issues that still exist I think that 3 days is the ideal time. 1 week has proven to long again imo and I think that 2 weeks (which is where WvW is supposed to be heading) will just be painful.
Your thoughts?
This thread has some good insight:

Yes, don’t go to 2 weeks. This is why:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/wuvwuv/The-Self-Balancing-System/first#post265567
thats it… im gonna roll one of the new Iron man classes.. these are definitely OP.
What dance animation would it use?
Yeah, but WvW doesn’t care about that.
If you server is so powerful that you have no game to play, and you simply must play the game, you are free to transfer to a lower population server and play your game. If you don’t want to because you don’t want to lose your “winning” status, WvW says “too bad”.
Be on a strong server and not play, or move to a weaker server and play.
The problem is self-fixing, the servers are self-balancing.
I had to check you weren’t bumping your own post here, what are you an Anet employee in disguise? lol
I find it amusing at what point your logic makes sense?
There’s already an ‘outmanned buff’ disproving your fair/balanced theory.
-‘WvW is designed to accommodate players that would not normally participate in PvP’.
-It’s a ruthless war game.
Those 2 statements just fly in each others face.
The problem is self-fixing, the servers are self-balancing.
- Assuming its even working, assuming there’s not broken mechanics, assuming what the PR machine is telling us is true (WTB Flyhack?)
koneko.3701
The general overall point that is getting missed here is the fact that it is a game.
You something, hes right <.< Whats fun about being dominated with no right of reply or in fact dominating with nothing to do?
You mention transfers? Sure, leave behind your friends, your guilds, upgrades etc. and start over again……. kitten that, you know what people will do? (Hint: Play something else).
(edited by SoPP.7034)
GJ gettin those screenies, must have been over in seconds.
As for Blackwater Vanguard…. teehee
Parroting myself again: Outmanned buff is not meant to balance things or make things “fair”.
It’s meant to reward those who take the risk and manage to do things. There is no mechanic in WvW that’s meant to make things “balanced” or “fair” by making the losing side stronger or the winning side weaker.
‘WvW is designed to accommodate players that would not normally participate in PvP’.
Go play sPvP please.
Your right it’s not good enough and many aspects need to be better.
This is a good read:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/wuvwuv/The-Self-Balancing-System/first#post262453
Its a known problem, Anet have stated as such, cba looking for the post.
Basically its a programming issue and they’re working on it.
Wow those night-cappers are at it again.
It’s nice to see people talking more and more about this.
People have been simplifying the issue through ‘free transfer’ and ‘night capping’ statements. I’m sure they play their part but its more a symptom rather than the actual problem.
These issues were raised during the BWE but the dry answer was ‘collect data, servers will balance’.
I’ve long maintained that their need to be systems in place to help balance the 3 teams in such a way that it keeps things close. The reason being:
‘WvW is designed to accommodate players that would not normally participate in PvP’.
With that in mind it should be impossible for 1 server to dominate a map 100% and the fact it’s just not fun, for anyone.
The reality is now the game has launched and attempting to implement anything is just so much harder.
So getting back to the OP, yes, make matches shorter, 3 days. Looking at the current system now, going to 2 weeks (which is what has always been intended) is just ridiculous.
give a perma death wvwvw death match! everyone on the server gets 1 life to enter with and play untill last server standing!
haha, I actually like this idea!
Back to OP, it’s hard to imagine that they will take such a big step now as to do that.
GW2 released Aug 28th.
Not even 1mo old.
Gotta give problems time to be resolved.
I’m sure Arenanet will comeup with something.
I’m sure they will, it’s just disheartening when most of these issues were pointed out during the BWE.
@SoPP
Can’t really blame them when JQ W3 population is like DB/CD combined, and then doubled it.
I for myself have given up and joined the bandwagon(HoD), apparently server hopping is the intended way to play W3
Whose blaming them, certainly not me.
Every week 1 server has dominated 2 others to the extent of nearly 100%.
The thing that amuses me is that its been like this since BWE.
in WvW

hahahahaha I almost tl:dr
Good Job
:)
There’s green everywhere now, people will just cruise till server reset. Can’t wait till 2 week games start -.-
You people are ridiculous. Complaining because people play at different times than you do? Seriously? I’ve seen a lot of bull on forums, but this has got to be the biggest pile of it.
Did anyone else lol at this?
Despite our our insistance that we are independent agents of change we are fundamentally driven by biological limitations.

I know your post is sarcastic, but you do realize you are playing on a NA server right? NA as in NORTH AMERICA, the continent. The one in which you are not a part of.
I want to know why this genius didn’t back us up when we asked for an Oceanic server?
Seems in MMO gaming Oceanics always get either completely ignored for being too small a population (see lack of SWTOR local servers at game launch) or in this case too big a population and blamed for nightfriggincapping. The immaturity of these people, I only hope they actually are <14
Blameless society with an over developed sense of entitlement, if only it was the kids :/

I don’t think asking people about their cest is a legitimate question.
Cause the underlying issue is not ‘night capping’ it’s just a symptom used by people to describe why it is they are getting their kitten kicked.
Servers aren’t balanced and at this point in time never will be.
Just wait till serves balance, then it will be money well spent psssst what if servers don’t balance? oh….. ahem some good points made by the OP.
I told that before and i say it now, there whould be no EU/US/Asia servers only international servers when game started, whole world mixed up and 24/7 battles without night capping and weird timezomes advantages.
This^^^^^
It’s only because people have the idea ‘this is our server, so make sure it caters to us’ that we now have these ridiculous debates around night capping.
If people joined international servers and QQ about night capping you could laugh at them for being ignorant and joining a server that was 1 continent only.
As it is we have to keep hearing about Oceanic players and their capping abilities. Who knew that oceanic people held so much power?
Has anyone’s servers balanced?
Our server controlled EVERYTHING last week, this week can’t even hold our keep.
I don’t believe its only my server this continued trend occurs, as I see it time after time.
Personally I believe there are some fundamental mechanics of WvW that are broken (that Ive spoken of, even back during the BWE).
I think we should go back to 3 day games, till the underlying issues are addressed.
Thoughts?
But but but what about off-peak capping?
Let us in or leave us along, I only ever wanted an oceanic server! Why didn’t you back me up??
no .. no.. no other way… get your server population balanced…. if you’re in american guild, move to those unofficial Oceanic servers, and that server will have balanced population like HoD…. or move to low population server like Devona for example, and have alliance with asian/oceanic guild there…
the game is not at fault.. it is the community….
I agree with this post but honestly I think Anet is stuck. SO many people have QQ because they didn’t have the foresight to understand what 24/7 match ups mean that ultimately Anet has to respond to it in some form.
Its a shame that an over developed sense of entitlement, coming from a blameless society now seems common. Most it seems don’t get past the ‘What do I get out of it?’ rather than ‘What can I do about it?’ phase.
Anet listens to the community and sometimes unfortunately it means listening to aspects of the community with the loudest voice.
“Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.”
QQ could recruit off peak guilds?
So just our of curiosity, how do you counter it?
Ive seen a few times in WvW what seems like (almost) permanent invisi with some serious dmg output with a grp of (seemingly) capable people being unable to take the thief down.
so what if you have the pop? i took a tower with 6 maybe 7 people in the JQ borderland right next to your big ol’ castle. You zerg, then zerg some more. whipped you countless times in even matches. You have lambs to the slaughter, wheres the decent players at?
~Dragonbrand
We know where DB is… camping the jumping puzzle
I see a lot of repeat posts making comments along the lines of ’stopping enemy from getting chest, whats the problem?" The answer, in short, is nothing.
I don’t have an issue if a guild camps with the intent to prevent people from getting chest. Hell its probably a buddy moment for them all.
The issue is specific to the ‘animal’ room.
Turin.1024 says it best:
1 single arrow cart on the roof will keep the entire room in combat while being invulnerable due to range. There is literally nothing the team below can do to get past the animal pit. When one side has a 0% chance of succeeding its a broken game mechanic, not a “valid tactic”.
So it becomes a zerg rush to set up siege then camp for 2 weeks. Everyone else kicks back and tries to be first in 2 weeks time?
For something that provides no points, sure let em waste their time.
So they get to farm it the entire time? That’s not a waste at all.
Farm it for what? The 5 seals and a few blues they get every 24 hours? Or farm morons that keep banging their heads against a brick wall? No loss as far as I see. I could only hope that the morons getting ground up there rage quit and free up some room for some people smart enough not to feed.
Sigh Multiple toons are not included in the 24hrs and those ‘few blues’ are blueprints for siege weapons that take down keeps and garrisons that they will be able to throw back in your face next time they take your keep.
With no PvP its an ezy jump puzzle thats easy to accumulate a lot of blue-prints/items for, if you know how to do it smart.

is wvwvw a pvp jumping puzle or siege wars?
Answering a question with a question still doesn’t explain you original statement.
I am still trying to figure out what the problem is? I see “smart people set up impenetrable defense in jump puzzle” and I hear lemming-like sheeple saying “I keep smashing my face into an optional part of a war zone where the enemy keeps kicking the crap outta me and it hurts” so I have to ask, what exactly is the problem? Don’t go there and they have no reason to sit there. If they were botting this entire thread would make sense but… it sounds like they weren’t so if they have that kind of free time to sit and do nothing, go take all their keeps while they sit there. I don’t see a problem here at all.
So it becomes a zerg rush to set up siege then camp for 2 weeks. Everyone else kicks back and tries to be first in 2 weeks time?
I think its more about the fact that the ‘Arena’ section (just past dark room) becomes almost impossible once people set up with siege etc. Any other section is more balanced and entertaining.
are the people still crying just ignoring this post? the easiest and most reliable way to beat beast room camping is to zerg it up. or setup your own siege equipment on the platform near the first mystic fountain. you can siege them right back with trebs/catapults.
Is it a PvP jump puzzle or siege wars?
Azure says it best:
Azure Prower.8701
Stealth works up until the dark room where you need a torch that cancels the effect. I’m pretty sure the 3 minute duration wouldn’t last through the dark room any way.
The beast arena after the dark room is a death trap. Once in combat. You cannot escape. The jumps cannot be jumped. Arrow carts can freely rain down arrows with no chance to counter. There is PVP and there is griefing. This is griefing.
If you reach the beast arena and find siege weapons set up. You may as well not bother. Because if you step into the arena, you will either be killed or stuck there with no other option than to log out.
yeah. the people camping the puzzle.
if someone needs blueprints, they can farm for the silver yknow.
that’s wvw. take a resource and capitalize on it.
Lets go camping then I guess.
Leave them in and keep it clean or take them out.
Letting guilds pride themselves on griefing players wasn’t part of Anet philosophy I was led to believe.
Ballista’s at the beginning, arrow carts at the end. Does anyone think this is actually a good idea?
It’s not even a server balancing issue, it’s a fundamental flaw in the execution of WvW.
