why such an extreme change, who said antything about 2 months rofl. As it is now it would take a casual 2-3 years of spvp only to get max rank yet the pinnacle of pve, a legendary, only takes a few months of grinding.

And it doesn’t even have to be a reduction in time, but make the progression FEEL meaningful. Theres tons of ways to do this like making rank gain the same for each level and increasing total levels, making certain gear available at each rank rather than everything at 10 levels, etc. Other games have figured it out (including gw1 lol) but apparently ANet forgot how to do it right.

Tournys Don't Pop

Tourneys dont pop because casuals are the base of any pvp game, and casuals don’t like doing tourneys since there is no match making so they face premades a lot then stop queuing. And on the reverse, good teams don’t like stomping pugs and also stop queuing. So all you are really left with is bad premades who enjoy stomping pugs because it makes them feel good.

Much like WvW, I"m not sure what they were thinking in regards to progression in spvp. Yea people like to PvP for fun, but there should still be some type of meaningful progression. If I play for 4 hours straight one night finishing top 3 on my team every game my bar shouldn’t move an inch and there should be more than just cosmetic gear/weapons that get uglier as you progress.

It’s worth noting, while they said we’re not working on new versions of the home maps currently, they didn’t say anything about new maps in general…..

Also I’ll throw out that the work our WvW guys are doing on culling and progression systems are extremely large, these are feature systems unto themselves. For example a lot of the culling work requires re-building almost entirely the way our game compiles, loads, and handles assets in general. For many companies, this task could literally years, we’re trying to pull it off in a matter of months, these guys are rock stars.

I know some of you got the impression there isn’t much development going on here, but I was to clarify you couldn’t be more wrong. There is a boat load of very serious WvW being done, much of it they discussed in this interview. Major features require many month long projects, our hope is you’ll start seeing the major fruits of those labors starting in our February update.

You’ll hear more details from our WvW team once stuff gets closer to finalized and tested, but we think you’re going to be thrilled with the stuff that’s coming. As an old DAoC fan, I’m freaking stoked about what these guys are doing.

getting trained by warriors and thieves is brutal on this build.

which build is it not brutal on a necro? you have no escape mechanisms other than DS. if anything this build is better built to deal with that with hard hitting marks/wells that warriors/thieves will be sitting in.

I prefer dagger/focus, but in the current meta of hot join with lots of glass thieves/warriors/mesmers this build actually works well.

It was explained clearly that the difference between thief/warrior bursts and mesmer burst is that former can be REACTED to, while mesmer cannot be REACTED to (since it is instant). So telling people to dodge or react in any other manner to it is nonsense unless you expect us to read mesmer’s mind and know when he is going to shatter.

so youre p/d? Whatever, i just remember you whining in a hot join and saying “come 1v1 me bro” or something along those lines. Which as a thief is just lol worthy. And then you are in here crying about a mesmer one shotting a glass thief when glass thieves can 1 shot pretty much every other class. Thieves have been telling everyone “thats what u get for runnin a glass cannon spec” since release basically now you have another glass counter and you start whining and crying. Do you not realize how pathetic you are?

Here is a summary of how dumb you sound:

“i can do 16k damage in 1 rotation but another class can do the same and has 2k more health than me in their glass spec, so nerf them, not me”

soko is actually a death blossom spammer, all the same though. the situation shown in the vid is easier to avoid than any thief burst. seeing glass thieves cry is quite amusing. waa I was only able to take 3/4 of his health in one shot and he killed me plz nerf!

there is kiting in tourneys? if you aren’t fighting on the node you’re doing it wrong. and staff to tag people at range. getting kited is not really an issue with this build

The 50% more damage when down is wonderbar against Mesmer. For some reason it’s the single most damaging spell we have against them where they can’t really do anything except flee and let you rally.

The trick, of course, is to know when to down yourself. When I feel I’m ready, I turn my back to his clones, I bask in their shatter combo and finally my true potential can be brought to light.

Top players will always present the full potential of a profession (it’s what makes them top players) and balance should be based off that. I don’t care if a half-decent Mesmer is able to beat a similarly half-decent Necromancer every single time; it’s a totally different scenario at the top.

quoted for absolute failure. If you balance around top end players and casuals are getting turned off due to poor balance at lower skill levels, they quit and the game dies regardless if there is perfect balance among the top 5 most elite teams in the world.

id love to see some of these “elite” players solo queue some 8v8 hot join in one of their non-optimal “works for me” builds and survive all the “wait for CDs and attack” mesmers and thieves. The sooner they do that the sooner they will see how the roots of this tree are just about dead.

free tournie requires only 40 people to pop and is region wide. regardless of whatevers goin on you figured there would be 40 friggin people wanting to do tournies during prime time. pvp is borderline dead. hot join is 90% thief/mesmer

Except the pvp base is small so events and situations that draw from that group are going to have a strong effect.

like i said, if there arent 40 people doing tournies during primetime, there’s an issue with the game, not outside things going on. Hell you can still get 15v15 queues in rift for port scion battleground in ~5 mins at off hours and they arent even world wide

We have a spammable gap closer that regularly crits between ~6-8k when the target is at low health. I have hit (and been hit) with 3 or 4 chained mega crit heartseekers that took a fight from equal to me instantly dead. Traited and at full initiative we can SPAM 5 heartseekers in a row. We all know that if we’re in a 1v1 and it starts to seem like we’re going to lose, all we have to do is spam HS and we’ll usually win. It’s an idiot mechanic. Between steal, shadow signet, infiltrators arrow, infiltrators signet, scorpion wire, shadow step, drake/skale and basilisk venom, dancing dagger, swiftness on dodge (depending on build), caltrops and thieves guild, any build with a dagger mainhand has MORE than enough methods of slowing their target and closing the gap without a spammable gap closer with an extremely high damage output.

I say they take away the leap option, up the initiative cost to 4, make it only activate when the target reaches 50% health and THEN let it crit for 8k. That’s still ~24k potential damage at someone with most likely less than 13k health.

Anyone who denies the fact that when losing, resorting to HS spam gives you the win, is full of it. It’s an easy out for bad players who can’t figure out any other method after they blow their cnd > steal > bs rotation, and why should they when HS spam is so stupidly effective?

and yet thieves cry when they get shattered for 10k when they have spammable 8k irony

I disagree with this. As a glass cannon, your survival is entirely in the other players hands. If they dodge well twice, you’re boned. You will die to autoattacks and incidental aoe. Nothing you can do except try to reset. Playing glass cannon well is almost entirely about staying the hell out of the way until someone has blown his defensive cooldowns and/or is out of position, then exploding him. If anyone wastes their dodge on autoattacks, they’re dead. Sure in a 1v1 or poorly coordinated environment it’s simply build wars, but in team fights vs good players, your endurance bar and other defensive cooldowns are your LIFE.

so its skill if they are forced to dodge two big hits from someone else then you jump in and spam 2 keys and kill them? lolwat

The OP’s post provides a pretty good example of what is wrong with gamer’s (and people in general) these days.

Yet this mindset hasn’t changed for the past 10 years, yet developers ignore it and keep releasing games that crash and burn thinking the mindset will miraculously change overnight and people will just start enjoy doing the same boring thing over and over for a year until they release new content, then the game becomes free to buy/play with re-structured money system so they can still turn a profit on the fanbois who will pay for any fluff/content they release.

It amazes me people keep saying stuff like “give them time” or “game is only X months old guys” when history has proven over and over that means jack to players. If you don’t have it at release or quickly thereafter people go bye bye. Spvp in this game is a perfect example. Release with so many missing features it’s not even funny.

Aside from the gearing issues if you were to play Rift with everyone having the same gear, it is better imo. More class depth, more build options, more map/game type options and just overall more fun.

If they just replaced their gear ranks with cosmetic/title ranks i’d still play. They did actually test the idea of gear normalization but at that point the people still playing it did so because they liked that type of progression so it didn’t fly.

i would say keep the speculation to a minimum statistical analysis is probably done regularly by the devs etc to get a non bias view.. humans have a very bias view on stats. some people saying things like all these classes are op but this one class is balance or all these classes are overplayed but this one is balance.. have very much misunderstood the nature of statistics.. if you were too look at regular spvp for example you would see that the majority of players are thiefs and mesmers. but this data alone is meaningless for example we dont know what the chances of a team winning is based on class alone, if for example we had strong data that indicates that the team with the most mesmers for example is 80% likely to win. then yes its obvious that class is unbalanced unfortunately spvp players range widely in skill giving an unacceptable p value. in paid tourneys at least you can assume players are of a similar skill lvl, most of the differences will come from tactics and group synergy and communication. without ranting too much basically what im saying is that, you could have a highly overpowered class that is not over represented due to general perception of that class.. doesnt mean it shouldnt be nerfed though.

i really hate these “devs know best” arguments. If devs were smarter than their players and made proper use of the “data” they had every single MMO released to date would be thriving and successful.

Instead you have people complaining about something, fanbois saying it’s fine – devs are working on it, game is only x months old, have patience – then a few months later the game is dead or F2P.

While this is all conjecture, the QPs are going to function as a currency to enter daily/monthly tournaments. So being low on the list shouldn’t matter as long as you are able to earn enough QPs for the tournament entry in a reasonable period of time. But as you pointed out there are many ways that the system could end up being designed in a horrible way, and unfortunately based on everything since release I wouldn’t be too surprised if they deliver a horrible system.

but why do you even need currency if you have a ladder? Top X get in, done. I’m a casual player but it still frustrates me they are doing this so wrong.

the great thing about WoW arena was you could play the minimum 10 games a week and still maintain top tier position

Yeah but it seems the mesmer dps is too high for having such a perk. While I’m running around trying to find which is the real one (and usually getting bombared with AoE’s in the midst of battle), by the time I find the real one, I’m downed.

Look, many people are complaining about the class. Based on those posts and my own observation and experience of the game, it seems broken.

There’s a bunch of ways to tell which one is the real one, and a bunch of threads out there explaining, the sooner you learn the easier they are to kill.

We’ll be doing RANKING ladders in the future. The QP system is used for tournament entry. I’ll talk more about how these systems work together when the new system is ready to be brought on line!

qp is still dumb. tournament entry should be based on rank, period. If a team is 10-0 against the top 5 teams but doesn’t “farm” QP why should they be excluded from bigger tournies? Dumb system is dumb.

the entire paid vs free tournament just makes no sense. if you have a proper ranking system you only need 1 tournament system, then take the top X teams and place them in a bigger monthly/yearly/whatever tournament. I understand your hope was for people to buy tickets with RL money, but come on.

Here let me help you fix your broken system.

Free Tournament Mode Only
-separate solo queuers from premade queuers
-proper skill based ranking system, no QP
-top 32 teams at end of ranking period get into monthly pool play
-8 pools of 4 teams, round robbin best of 3 (each tournament rotation map)
-each pool winner and 4 wild cards get seeded, top 4 get byes – best of 3 in pigtail rounds, best of 7 in remaining rounds.

I just fixed your broken system in 10 seconds.

The QP leaderboard I suppose is better than no sort of ranking at all, but not by much.

You’re so wrong, the QP leaderboard is a joke and an insult, it does NOT measure skill, sure, you have lots of QPs because you win a lot you say, true, true, but there’s also other teams out there that don’t play every day for 6 hours a day (like mine) yet we’re exactly on par as any other competitive team but we dont have 600 QP simply because we do not have the time.

QP is a sad excuse for a ladder.

i play a mesmer among other classes in spvp and free tournies and it is definitely my favorite class. FWIW I use Taugrims balanced “legion” phantasam based build and not the fotm shatter build. Regardless, as I posted in another thread, if you take portal and time warp away from mesmer they would not be “required” anymore on tournie teams. That right there should be a huge indicator that there is an issue with balance.

I’m all for toning down shattered strength and severely limiting portal use in tournaments (and WvW for that matter). I like the idea of giving the portal a health bar that someone can destroy so the mesmer actually needs to think about when and where to drop it.

Hello! I’m Jjaja, I play Necromancer for a top five North American team (Jesus Beat Us Once; JBUO) and at the time of this posting I have around 376 qualifying points. Hopefully, these “credentials” lend some credibility to what I’m about to say. This is all strictly from my experience in tPvP.

Profession Balance: (Obviously every profession could use bug fixes and tweaks)
Guardian: Very Strong
Elementalist: Strong
Thief: Slightly Strong
Mesmer: Balanced
Necromancer: Balanced
Ranger: Balanced
Warrior: Slightly Weak
Engineer: Weak

Profession Representation: (There isn’t a profession we never see)
Guardian: Very High
Elementalist: Very High
Mesmer: High
Thief: Medium High
Necromancer: Medium High
Ranger: Medium
Warrior: Medium
Engineer: Medium Low

Weapon Swap Change:
Really hurts classes with no built in swiftness on their weapon sets. Otherwise, this is a good change. Why? It evens the playing field for professions who don’t have multiple viable weapon sets. It should be kept until all (or the majority) of the weapon sets are viable amongst all professions.

Paid Ticket Entry:
Needs to be lowered. It seriously reduces the competitive capacity of paids if some teams or players have to do four hours of frees just to do one paid. I suggest lowering the requirement from 5 to 3.

The Necromancer forums are a non-stop cryfest for buffs. I don’t believe we need any buffs. I’ve asked quite a few other top players for their opinion on this list and they seem to agree.

Yeah, like many other have already said you couldn’t be more wrong about this jjaja. The forums are not crying for buffs, all people are asking for is a little bit of attention from the devs to fix the numerous bugs and blatant fails of minions and life siphon. Having two trait trees that are almost completely useless is mind boggling. Even more so since it’s been this way since release.

Every patch there’s a post with a huge following saying how disappointed they are with the notes. People want every trait line to work and be viable. That will never happen; no game has ever achieved anything like that. Bug fixes and a few tweaks are in order but nothing more.

people whining because minion ai is still broken and siphoning traits are worthless. 2 things people have been complaining bout since beta 1. how uncalled for of the community to be dissapointed that two of the biggest/most unique traits of a necro have been worthless/broken for 9 months.

We aren’t talking about some bugs and trait issues like every other class. It’s like mesmers complaining when phantasams were borked. And look Anet fixed it in one patch cycle. Rangers got pet AI fix. Necro minions, nothing.

nobody on necro forums is crying for a buff. They have 1 viable build in tpvp. People are asking for FIXES.

If you read my original post carefully you would have noticed I said every class needs its bug fixes. There’s about three different viable tPvP builds for necromancers; I personally use two of them. Please also read my weapon swap change section… I said it should be kept until all or the majority of weapon sets are viable for all professions.

Not every weapon, trait, spell, or elite will be viable. There’s too many spells per profession for that. League of Legends can’t even get it right with only four spells per champion. You might be asking for too much.

i read the op, my response was you saying necros are crying for buffs, they aren’t. They are asking for fixes which piegon hole them on all aspects of the game not just WvW. nobody uses axe anywhere, nobody uses minion anywhere, nobody uses siphon builds anywhere. 2 of our train lines main idea (minion and siphon) are bad for every aspect of the game. It would be like a mesmer having shatters and clones never used and only phantasams working properly.

And what are the 3 builds you use? power/cond, balance/cond, and glass cond? lolk

Still works great, I use slightly different utilities depending on the situation, but overall still great. I tried a glass shatter build after the 12/14 patch and just don’t enjoy that play style. fwiw i play necro for pve/wvw and really find mesmer boring in both of those areas, but it is by far my favorite class in s/t pvp.

Hello! I’m Jjaja, I play Necromancer for a top five North American team (Jesus Beat Us Once; JBUO) and at the time of this posting I have around 376 qualifying points. Hopefully, these “credentials” lend some credibility to what I’m about to say. This is all strictly from my experience in tPvP.

Profession Balance: (Obviously every profession could use bug fixes and tweaks)
Guardian: Very Strong
Elementalist: Strong
Thief: Slightly Strong
Mesmer: Balanced
Necromancer: Balanced
Ranger: Balanced
Warrior: Slightly Weak
Engineer: Weak

Profession Representation: (There isn’t a profession we never see)
Guardian: Very High
Elementalist: Very High
Mesmer: High
Thief: Medium High
Necromancer: Medium High
Ranger: Medium
Warrior: Medium
Engineer: Medium Low

Weapon Swap Change:
Really hurts classes with no built in swiftness on their weapon sets. Otherwise, this is a good change. Why? It evens the playing field for professions who don’t have multiple viable weapon sets. It should be kept until all (or the majority) of the weapon sets are viable amongst all professions.

Paid Ticket Entry:
Needs to be lowered. It seriously reduces the competitive capacity of paids if some teams or players have to do four hours of frees just to do one paid. I suggest lowering the requirement from 5 to 3.

The Necromancer forums are a non-stop cryfest for buffs. I don’t believe we need any buffs. I’ve asked quite a few other top players for their opinion on this list and they seem to agree.

nobody on necro forums is crying for a buff. They have 1 viable build in tpvp. People are asking for FIXES.

-Minion AI – broken
-siphon builds – worthless
-axe – never used
-most bugs of any class,
-etc.

so they are balanced for the 1 viable build they have, good info bro.

the dumb thing about this game is if you remove one utility (portal) and one elite (time warp) from mesmer they would drop to worst. That’s how dumb this game is. Two slots make them from never take, to required. I play a mesmer too heh.

There are many great options for fast gameplay with a high skill cap, never autoattacking. Have you played an offensive d/d ele or a 4-kit engineer? Anet made it clear that some professions would have simpler mechanics than others. Not “easier,” just fewer buttons to press. Just choose a profession with more buttons.

There are also some good offensive guardian builds, although they often get overlooked because their defensive builds are the best in the game.

In GW2, unending fights are pretty rare—consider a traditional RPG where every healer vs healer is a stalemate. At least here it only happens once in a while.

the problem is easier classes perform equally well if not better than “harder” classes/specs

it’s not once every 30 seconds, staff 5 on 32s cd, doom on 20 sec cd, and reapers protection. again this would be for hot join or WvW

50% downed doesn’t do 2k. it’s terror + fear when downed followed by down 2 fear

Try to recreate your theory without using Downed State 1.

huh? im not using downed 1. Terror + fear when downed ability (fear of death) + #2 down fear. That’s 2 fears back to back, if you got a bleed on them when you went down first will crit around 1.2k, and the #2 downed fear will crit for 1.8k

Terror dealing 800 damage is perfectly doable in the mists, try it yourself. I had numerous people testing last night seeing around 1200 damage per tick with the 50 percent boost from a condition.

IF, note I said IF, since I have not tested, it stacked additive with the 50 percent dot boost and the person you were fighting still had a dot on them when the went down, it would deal 100 percent more than 800. That is 1600.

Now I don’t think this is the case because normally dama increase skills ignore DOT damage, I was speculating, which I made clear. I will test it later to cofirm.

No point is you need to stop repeating those specific numbers because that is all people will see. High numbers + Terror = QQ.

im definitley seeing 1.2k+ ticks on non-downed fears, its hard to track though since it doesnt show up in log. so if +50% downed damage works for #2 downed fear than 1.8k is possible.

I’ve always seen Terror+ Staff 5 hit over 1k on targets that have stacks of vulnerability on them, while I have 10+ stacks of might. That doesn’t make it useful. It requires stacking conditions and boons and even then you never get enough damage out of it to matter. This is all speculation of course since all PvP meta is heavily influenced by Stability and Condition removal which both cancel fear and any damage Terror might apply.

You still can only apply a significant amount of damage using this “buff” while in a downed state. And that should alert your common sense system. Building a strat around being dead is not brilliant.

That is the point. This is a buff like chocolate is a buff to ice cream. No its just another flavor. So presenting it like some fantastic gift serves only a misleading a negative purpose.

im seeing 1k+ with just staff 5 and a stack of bleeds and no might. I’m not saying it’s great, but for hot join and WvW it’s not bad the whole thread was a joke anyways, because they probably will end up nerfing it even though it’s nothing amazing
