Well, i tried starting with 17 ecto’s and ended up with 109. Lowest change, and made a profit.
My advice : keep it simple and small, try a few at a time, and quit while you’re ahead.
and take NO MORE then about 20 ecto’s in there. If you lose em, you don’t lose big.
Hi,
when tryingto do goemm’s lab jumping puzzle, it became impossible to do.
After stormy station portal, you need to cross some branches, but in comparison with some youtube video’s it became apparent that one of the branches is missing.
So that puzzle can not be finished. I wasn’t the only one there that couldn’t finish it.
As a reference :
at exactly 5.08 you see on the left side the double branch. It’s now a single one that’s way to short. At 5.20 she’s standing on top of that branch which isn’tthere anymore.
Thx.
Well, i don’t really invest in the market, i’m to poor for that atm (won’t stay that way),
but i do farm and keep all my stuff so i can craft the items that go up in price.
That way, when i see things going up in price, i tend to make them so i can make a profit in those. If players desire a certain insignia or food item, and the price of that goes up = more cash for me by makin it.
Consider me a hamster waiting for a good opportunity. And those will come ^^
Actually what has happened proved they are correct, it was a bad idea to pre-order until more information was given, had those of us who ordered based on the value of extras + value of character slot waited, we wouldn’t be sitting here thinking, “great I just bought an extra char slot I don’t need or want”. (Just to clarify, the slot EVERY veteran account is given would be given free, the slot acquired from the deluxe or ultimate editions are purchased)
Well, i personally didn’t care about an extra slot since i have the original 5 slots of which one is kept free (made only 4 chars to 80), but my opinion is this : some people hop right on in on a pre-order for whatever reason, and then complain about what they bought.
I’m sorry, but imo that’s pushing it a bit to far. If i buy an item with gems only to find out they give it for free next week, well, i’m to blame for not waiting it out while people were waiting for a decision.
Players should have waited for a decision or a comment from Anet. Now that they haven’t they complain.
Here’s a suggestion : instead of running into a burning building to save your cat, wait for the fire department and don’t complain to St.Peter " i didn’t know they could do that".
Here’s another suggestion : take that extra slot, make a toon to the required lvl, go to the corn farm spot nekkid, and leave it there for corn farming. Make gold and get your gems back. Problem solved. ^^
Oh, pleeeeease. Stop it already.
And fyi, people have already on the forums said on different occasion, that it was a bad idea to pre-order Hot now until more info was given or the issues were resolved. Now that they are you complain about what they give….
I’ll repeat myself :
Oh, pleeeeease. Stop it already.
We don’t need them.
Yes. We do. You might not, but that don’t matter.
Add more instances ? Great
Add more and bigger goup events ? Great
Your proposed changes ? Not so great. In fact, i think it’s horrendous.
That’s my view.
Yes, but you will not have access to certain (future) features and specialities. You will be able to play the game as it is now. (including the update releasing tomorrow)
Well, some of the traits they changed are good (combined as well) , some are ‘meh’ and some….downright ‘yukk.’
It allows for build diversity, but most, as usual, will follow a certain meta again or hang on every word the theorycrafters will dish out. Same old same old.
I think they should add a Borg cube pet. With phasers.
“it’s over 9000!”
moving on.
Well, for some this will be quite…unexpected, but at the very least it addresses players concerns about that extra slot. Something very much welcomed.
As for the expansion itself, i’m willing to pre-order the expansion, but depending how long the preorder lasts, i just want to hear a little bit more about it before i decide.
Other then that, it’s a great response to all the mayhem, and when you consider what you get for now in the package, the Ultimate edition provides the best value for money you can get in an mmo.
I know that a lot of ppl can’t afford it (yet ?), but depending on the content of HoT, it’s the best deal i’ve seen in a looooong time in any game. (4K gems ? hell yeh, not to mention the rest)
A perfect response from Anet.
This sounds more like trying to influence the market instead of an indepth analysis. You can only analyze something when it has passed, not before.
I might as well dump my bezerker insignia on the TP to crash the prices……doh.
Something ‘might go up, something ’might’ not, its all pointless predictions.
Besides, anyone with half a brain will already have gotten their stuff before the update hits.
I’m not into the whole exclusive thing, but it seems to me there are 2 sides to this :
- An item becomes “exclusive” because it doesn’t get reintroduced again.
- An item is exclusive because it came with a purchase or a pre-order.
If an item doesn’t get reintroduced, its price will inflate whenever some players have it but don’t really want it, making the item appear “exclusive” and expensive. Mostly these items are plain cosmetic changes.
If it comes with a package, then it will only belong to those that bought that package and will usually not be for sale (account/char bound).
Now if someone want to pride themselves of having an exclusive item, it means only they have it and only a few others do. But think about this : if the item is for sale on the TP, is it still exclusive ?
Because you may clain to have gotten it from an event or someting, but you might as well be someone who dished out cash and simply bought it, like a skin. So where is the pride in that ? Pride inspending money to claim you got something “exclusive” ?
It’s all about perception. If someone is happy they got an “exclusive” or hard to get item (limited availability, again, like skins), then good for them. But there is really no effort needed to obtain the item, you can simply buy it off the TP.
If however, you walk around with a legendary, then you show ppl that you have made an effort in making/obtaining the item.
Personally i have more ‘respect’ or admiration for someone who invests time to make something they can show off like a legendary, then someone with some skin they got through some event. Sure , the skin might look cool, and it doesn’t take anything away from the beauty (or uglyness – perception again), but it’s not really exclusive is it ?
And i must agree to the fact that some players might want to go for a certain look but can’t because it’s no longer available.
Exclusive in my book means only 1 person on the server has it. And not someone who can just buy it off the TP.
I like exclusive rewards that are given for major achievements like winning tournaments and things like that, it shows that the player earned something and the item is like a trophy and it’s worth respecting.
+1 to that.
(edited by Sthenith.5196)
They forgot 2 major rules of business.
1) A happy customer is a paying customer.
2) Customer appreciation. There is a reason many MANY business have customer appreciation events.
Even my brother who owns a bakery does customer appreciation ‘events’. “Buy an item this week and you get 2 free chocolate frosted donuts” or sumething like that. But he won’t be saying “new customers get a free bread when buying a donut.” That’s just stupid.
As long as we don’t know everything HoT has to offer (and for example telling us how many zones HoT will include could help) there’s no way we can say whether 50$ is a fair price or not.
This is one of the main reasons players don’t ‘bite’ into the preorder.
Even if they sold HoT for 35$ some people would have kept complaining, just not as many
Anet will NOT release a seperate HoT at a lower price, they made that very clear.
- the expansion will cost 50$, base game free included (since new ones need it)
- there will not be an added char slot with the standard edition
They just can’t change the deal they have offered since that would imply they need to change it for tose who already bought as well…way to much of a hassle and work.
What they will do is release more information about HoT in the coming months, making players and potential players more interested, and hoping players will eventually buy their product.
As for those that say it was all planned : NO company will use the arguement ‘any press is good press’ to sell more items. On the contrary : by having negative press, you push away new potential customers while letting older ones slip away to the competition.
Something which is obviously happening now.
If i were a potential new customer, and i’d read about the stuff going on here, i wouldn’t buy the game or preorder it, hell no. I’d be looking at some other game where things are quiet and where i know what i’m getting for my money.
Or do people really believe more copies are sold because players are saying ’we’re getting screwed." ?
My best guess is that they were hoping players would say “this is an amazing deal, lets preorder” and “look at all the things they add to the expansion!”. But the marketing division (or whoever decides there) made a big mistake. It’s that simple.
With all the competition out there, and some games releasing new stuff, will it be worth it for Anet to lose some of their playerbase in order to gain “potential” new ones ? That is a question only they can answer.
Where did you see ‘rage’ ? lmfao.
On a side note, i’m happy for those that wanted the guildhalls, personally i don’t see myself spending lots of time in there, it’s mainly good for the big kahuna guilds out there i think. They’ll have plenty to keep em busy. I just wonder what it’s going to cost to build up your guildhall. I’m just guessing it won’t be for free. We’ll (or you’ll) see.
You don’t know about the quality until you play it.
One answer: youtube or twitch.
Seriously, i’ve seen games before i’ve even played them, and i’ve bought those games because they looked awesome. Some of those games i saw i regretfully couldn’t buy because they only released it on console.
I remember one game i didn’t get to buy, so i watched the whole 14+ hours walkthrough (no comments one) of ‘The Last of Us’. It was frikkin AMAZING.
I’d gladly pay 50 or even 100 $ for that kind of gameplay. But i highly doubt it will happen here.
Take the guild halls… In the time it took them to actually gather all the ideas, make an entirely new concept and code all the new mechanics they could have made at least 10 normal pve maps I bet.
…and there you go, the amazing guildhalls regular players of regular guilds don’t actually really care about…. but hey, players asked for it. Guildhalls and a vertical map.
Where you can glide. Vertically. Right.
The recent backlash is absolutely not representative of the community at all
Euhmm, yes it is. A community is a group of people, the players on the forums are a group of people. I play the game and am mostly in there, but i am also part of this forum ‘community’.
Just look at the forum pages and count the number of posts made about the current ‘issue’, and you’ll soon realize that it’s indeed “the community” responding in a massive way about, for the most part, 1 thing.
If you mean it’s not representative of how they usually are, then yes, you’re right, they’re usually friendly. But this is an ‘unusual’ time to say the least.
…we’ll all be venturing in to the lair of Mordremoth together.
I wish you’d be right, but i don’t think so, you won’t see certain players anymore, at least not in HoT (for quite some time), that’s for sure. My guess is that only 10% max from all players buys into the whole pre-order thing. The rest is just waiting to see what will happen and how Anet will respond.
If unfavorable, then i think you’re being rather to optimistic.
Who has said they want anything remotely similar to the premium stuff the chinese got? No one that I’ve seen.
It’s not what players want. It’s what they get that counts. And that, is entirely up to Anet/NCsoft.
The cause is the price tag for HoT being more expensive than we would have originally thought and more expensive than some can afford
Wrong.
If they had let the price tag the same, but given those that have the original game core something “extra”, like ppl suggested a char slot, or even something else no matter what, then you wouldn’t have this discussion and uproar.
Anet made 2 mistakes :
1. first announcing you needed the game core then chaging their Faq later on without notice.
2. Blatantly telling people there will be NO change to their ‘bundles’, if you can call em that, and giving the core game as a ‘bonus’ to new players.
Those 2 facts are what P. players off. Not the price tag.
As far as i’m concerned, i don’t care about the price tag, i care about the content, and honestly, i’m not impressed. If you look at a game from a different category, an FPS, they manage to sell an ‘expansion’ (in fact a standalone one) for only 20$. And for that you get one hell of a single play experience definately worth 20$, i’d even buy 10 of those to keep playing it. It’s not about the cash, it’s about how you present it and what’s in it.
There are two factors at play here: “perceived value” and good/bad faith in operations.
and that’s right on the dot.
I got this game as a present and i’ve only spend cash on gems, so as far as i’m concerned, i could throw this game into the trash and not be ‘hurt’ by it. But spending cash on something i know nothing about and don’t even know when it is coming is in my opinion overeagerness.
I think that Anet is/was trying to lure in new players to fill the gap of those that already left and didn’t plan on returning. Declining player numbers prove that. But that plan backfired in a way they didn’t intended or predicted.
If you have a few people running in one direction screaming fire, 90% will follow them blindly and you have a mob. The other 10% waits till they see the fire and by then it’s to late to escape. Wether there’s a fire or not, you lose a lot of people, and that’s completely on Anet’s marketing division.
I’m one of the 0.1% that waits for the fire while holding an extinguisher. Getting ready to hop out if the fire’s to hot.
K, i’m going to the store right now and ask for my copy of Gw2 for 0$.
“that’ll be 50$”
" huh ?"
“50$. For HoT, gw2 is free”
“But, I just want gw2, no HoT”
“Sorry, we renamed GW2 to HoT. Still 50$, thank you very much.”
“But that’s not what they said before”
“Who cares. Still 50$.”
NC Soft knows all they have to do is pay off a few journalist
1. paying off a “journalist” means that person isn’t even considered one.
2. they can only influence “sponsored” websites, not news reporting websites.
3. who the hell would risk exposure like “company x tried to bribe…” " company x has tried to stem the tide by…." , seriously ?
I think you’re overestimating the power or influence of a gaming company.
Remember the long Dragon Hunter name drama?
Not even comparable. Honestly.
“How many new players does anybody believe will be willing to stay once they purchased HoT, after all the NPE grind gates are in place?
My estimate, and that is purely subjective and based on all the other games(mmo) i’ve played over the last 25 years :
- 50 to 60% of the new players will leave within 3 months.
- about 5 to 10 % of the veterans will leave before the expansion comes out.
- about 20 % (maybe even more) will leave within 3 months after the expansion has been released.
This is based on the time it takes for people to explore and gain max level, the time it takes for them to get bored completely and the discrepancy between old and new players. Slightly taking into account the uproar currently going on. But that doesn’t have a huge impact.
I wonder what Arena’s reaction would be? “We know our playerbase for the nice kittens with extra money they are, they will eat up any unfair pricing and ask for more”?
I highly doubt Anet has expected such a reaction from the ‘masses’, and if i were the boss there, i’d slap a few heads together thinking about the possible loss in revenue (the players that decided to leave and the new ones that think ‘maybe i shouldn’t buy a game that has so much controversy and trouble) and mostly , giving Anet a really bad rep. Because players really freaking out about this and seeing it on the websites everywhere, does give a bad aftertaste.
If people say ’don’t buy it, it’s not worth it’, of the 100 possible customers only 3 don’t, that’s a loss of 3% of revenue. Sure, you’ve sold 97%, but if you’d done it the smart way, you would have had it all.
If instead of adding friends to the game you tell em to stay away cause you’re going to leave it, then that too is a loss of possible revenue. Not just the buying price : the cash they spend ingame.
I like this comment made on that news posting :
I really hope their strategy ends up luring tons of new people because that’s going to be their only saving grace once a bunch of us veterans abandon this game for good, all due to their shady practices and lack of explanations. The fact they’re all hush-hush about what else is new on the expansion doesn’t make things any better… probably because there’s nothing else that justifies the price they’re asking.
I believe that that is the big problem right there :
- you have several people saying “over 90% will buy HoT” while it’s obvious to anyone with a brain that is isn’t so. Compare the numbers that played gw2 1 year ago to those that play it now, it’s far less populated because you have “veterans” waiting for an expansion to play the game again.
-adding an expansion and announcing it without players even knowing what is in it plus the fact they say “it’s smaller but has depth” doesn’t add much to keep veterans in the game and willing to buy HoT.
- when you actually play the game on different hours you can see that it asks you to change maps(several times in a row) because there’s NO population present. It’s only during certain hours and on certain maps that you see people roaming the lands. Otherwise, it’s a complete dead zone. I can run around any random map and only encounter ‘maybe’ 10 players.
Finally, consider this :
New players do get a great deal for the 50$ or whatever they spend on it, and they will venture in the new zones…where NO veteran is waiting for them to explain things or showing them the ropes. Veterans will be more like : “gtfo, do it yourself, why should i care about a newbie” because they will still be P. off and usually NOT be IN the starter maps.
The longer the discussion about the expansion lasts, the less they actually tell people what is in the expansion, the bigger the rift between old and new players will become.
As a new player, i immediately found a guild, got help from everywhere and was genuinely surprised at the amazing community.
Now this crap happens and trust me, like it’s obvious in the forums, it does create a rift.
And then there’s those that already preordered their HoT copy and are exited for it. I’m happy for them, i truly am, but i just hope that it will be worth the wait. Something which i’m still doubtful of.
I’m very slowly making my asc gear, already have the weapons. Not going for Legendary weapons because not needed and overpriced for what they add.
i think asc is def worth it, IF you want that little bit of oomph more.
Hi all,
well, i’ve been reading and commenting (when i felt like it) on the latest topics about the expansion, and so far, all one can agree upon is the community in an uproar.
As a reasonnable ‘newbie’ , playing for only a couple of months, i’m quite baffled and confused by this whole expansion thing.
Personally i won’t preorder HoT, not because of the pricing, but because i don’t know what is going to be in it. And as far as the packaging goes, well, that’s another story.
Anet marketing division has imo made a HUGE mistake in promoting the expansion as a packaged deal with the original core game, which a lot of “veterans” percieve as unfair. Wether that’s true or not is not my concern.
But did anyone consider another perspective ? That of the actual developers and programmers of the expansion ? Those guys & gals have worked their kitten off and still are in order to bring something new and refreshing to the game.
Something a lot of people been asking for. And now, because of a terrible miscommunication and/or marketing concept/idea, their whole work is basically ignored.
The main question should be : is the expansion’s content worth getting for the price they advertise it for ? It is something you want to add to the game ?
If i were one of the devs working on the expansion, i’d be gutted seeing my work ignored in favor of the uproar about some badly conceived marketing idea.
But maybe that’s just me.
I’ve been given this game as a present, and i’ve spend some money on the gemstore, so i don’t really care how much they ask for the expansion, i just enjoyed these months ingame wondering if and what they were going to add. Which i still don’t know much about, only what Anet tells us.
As far as i’m concerned, i’m curious what it’s going to be, and seeing what already is in the core game, i’m hopeful that it’s going to be awesome, at least more then what we are being shown thus far.
Hopefully some of the gamers here are wondering the same thing. Is it going to be something for everyone (WvW/Guilds/quests/PvP/…etc) ? Or is it going to be a “bleh, not interested” kind of thing ?
I think, while the community might be right about the whole marketing thing, people should also not forget that those same dev’s brought us the core game (which imo is awesome)…wishing they do it again (baffle us).
Just wanted to get this idea out.
Thx for reading.
And why are these sites actually making topics to talk about the rage from players? Is it not so they get more views to there sites and actually make money from the ads they display?
If there weren’t a “rage” to talk about in the first place…. it has become big enough to get noticed, which in turn gets them interested enough to talk about it and get more viewers.
And the longer Anet waits, the bigger it gets.
I like the article on Massively. I think it really covers most of the relevant points with a good, rational yet not numb tone.
http://massivelyop.com/2015/06/18/why-guild-wars-2s-prepurchase-deal-has-the-internet-raging/
I read that article, and it pretty much is right on the dot. I personally think that Anet is keeping quiet for now because they either hope it will shimmer down OR they are preparing an appropiate response that doesn’t upset the community and doesn’t bring their vision of the expansion (and the packages) in danger.
Either way, i’m not buying into the whole expansion hype Anet has been trying to create (oooh, it’s going to be so awesome…. right, i’ll w8 and see first.) nor am i inclined to preorder something i have no knowledge of how big (or small) it’s going to be.
Just consider what teh expansion is going to have according to Anet :
- guild halls ( don’t really care about it)
- maguuma jungle ( how big or small ?)
- specializations (bleh)
- revenant class (…)
- stronghold game mode (not interested)
- new borderland (amazing. serious. no, i mean it. serious. :s)
You can tell from the above how interested i am. Def. not enough to preorder without WAY more info.
My 2 cents. thats about what i’m willing to pay for what has been shown.
p.s. : i’ve only played this game for a few months, so i didn’t get 3y worth of content or events and the likes.
(edited by Sthenith.5196)
What’s written on the badge ? I Don’t know ? I Don’t buy.
Anet’s real mistake here was in the way it was communicated; they screwed up the presentation in a way that made a lot of existing players feel like they were being ripped off (even though they aren’t).
Old player has A.
New player buys B, gets A for free (bonus).
Old player buys B, gets A for free (bonus).
New player has A+B
Old player has A , A+B. (if he doesn’t connect expansion with 1st core)
So, basically, the old player wonders why he needs to get A again in order to play B. No matter if it’s included or not.
Old player wants B. and if possible an extra slot for the new class. Nothing else. That is the problem. They see it as a rip-off.
IF the guys at marketing at Anet were smart, they should have said :
Buy B , you get A for free.
Buy B, you get A for free, BUT if you already have A installed, you will get…‘something’…
(even if it were only a title)
But oc, they miscommunicated. I’m still confused …if i don’t connect my new version with my old game, will i be able to play the old WITHOUT the expansion AND play B with my new game A ?….
Well, i’ve seen the upcoming changes in skills and traits, and so far that has been a serious issue for a lot of players. That isn’t “resolved” and they already announce a ‘pre-order’ that really p..ses a LOT of players off.
And consider this : what does pre-order mean ? It simply means you pay for something you don’t have a clue what ‘s in it. It also means you’re buying something without current issues being resolved in some way or another and without those ‘issues’ being tested ingame….
In my opinion, anyone preordering BEFORE the new update is rolled out (23rd) and thouroughly tested, is paying no attention or just plain stupid.
Suppose you get a testdrive of a car. Ohh nice, but it doesn’t have as much power as i’m used to, but no matter, i’m going to buy the new model based on this engine anyways, cause i’m probably going to like it without even knowing if its the color or interior I even want.
We got an expression : “buying a cat in a bag”. You don’t know what kind or color, hell, you don’t even know if it’s a real cat. Still going to buy it ? Right : stupid.
If you want the company to pay attention and actually listen : don’t preorder.
On a side note : i’d advise the big honcho at Anet to fire the genius who came up with the current ‘preorder’ promotion bundles.
I’ve got a car.
“Buy a caravan, you get the car for free”
Dude, i HAVE a car.
“Buy a caravan but we won’t say what’s inside, get a car for free and a coffee mug.”
Dude, i HAVE a car. And i don’t give a crap about the mug.
Seriously people, i was thinking of making a necro as my latest new toon, but after seeing what they did ( CC nerf especially) i think i’ll stick with my current classes who are, to be honest, WAY better off then you guys.
My best guess ? Unless they change their minds, necro’s are a now non viable (esp pvp) class to choose in this game.
This :
We should all start running a downed build that revolves around us attempting to beat things while downed because that’s where we’ll be after the nerfs hit.
…says it all. Just throw the towel in the ring.
Well, i haven’t read all of the changes to all characters, yet. But it seems to me that eles indeed got somewhat buffed.
The things i noticed :
Base attunement recharge reduced from 13s to 10s
Base global recharge reduced from 1.65s to 1.5s
Ice Bow Frost Volley: Damage increased by 25%. Vulnerability application of this ability has been increased from 10 seconds to 15.
Ice Bow Frost Fan: The damage of this ability has been increased by 25%.
Pyromancer’s Training: Deal 10% more damage while attuned to fire. Fire abilities have a 33% reduced recharge.
So doesn’t this basically mean eles will constantly use Ice bow while switching between attunements faster (when needed) ? And some things they changed like Tornado or whirlpool, were they ever really used ?
And don’t forget : vulnerability on ice bow lasts longer = increasing the damage conditions applied while vuln. is active…. :
Vulnerability This condition was changed so that it not only increases direct damage, but it will also increase condition damage as well. Each stack will increase direct damage by 1% and condition damage by 1%.
Well, that’s my impression at least.
I only have 1 character with 100% completion, and yes, it was a drag to do. Not because i was doing it solo, but because in nearly every map i had to consult a website for that one hidden poi or vista in some remote spot of the map or in a remote spot in the sea.
The hearts, well, some are fine, some are really tedious or long winded and take up a lot of time. But it’s not that bad.
The best part of doing map completion is when you come across “nearby” events when you see a number of ppl helping along. Some hearts can be completed faster that way (counts for mob kills) and in my opinion, ppl are always helpful. Even the skill challenges (not the communes) are better then.
And yes, doing the higher lvl zones first is way better. It also helps to ‘map out’ a map by running around it before doing any hearts, prevents you from missing spots.
Made a new one after first got to 80, made 3rd after second got to 60. Recently finished map completion on 1st one but have yet to do all the dungeons (i don’t like those at all), but i do enjoy fractals and jumping puzzles.
You don’t really need to do all the dungeons and whatnot to start a new toon, and making new ones or trying them out makes you more aware of what others can or can’t do in a squad.
So far, it’s been quite enjoyable, with the exception of my ele, which i find to be very very squishy….at lvl 50+ it isn’t as much fun as my other ones.
What kind of question is that ? why wouldn’t they be ? It’s not like some class suddenly becomes obsolete.
My sincere condolences, nice video and a true testament on how games can be a bridge between kindred minds.
When i look at some characters looks, i think to myself “now that’s not nice at all” because the colors don’t match up in my opinion. But then i think “it’s MY opinion, but not my character” and who the hell am i to comment on someones preference in looks anyways.
If people like their character then that’s good enough i think. Some might not like my skins or dyes, but the only one who should care about that is me.
And the same goes for any weapon skin.
I can’t think of a single encounter in gw2 that you’re better off ranging, except for a very few encounters like mai trin, but you’re still using melee weapons there
Euhm…what ?
I did Mai Trin as melee, boy did that hurt. I got downed more often then doing damage because of her sudden teleport. Not to mention that cannon contantly shooting at me.
Then i tried with LB, and that was a blast. I could out manouver her, do some serious damage and NOT get downed at all.
Trust me, ranged has it’s purposes. But rifle, that’s for looks and when you want to switch to ‘point and shoot’ mode in open pve.
As for SW, the only ones that are a bother are terragriffs. 1 is ok, but 3 of those buggers… Taking out your hammer at that point makes a lot of difference. Just smack em down and start pummeling on it in between dodges.
I don’t know where this hyper obsession with a single play style comes from.
That’s easy to explain :
Some, not all, players want to maximize efficiency which basically means dps output. In order to do that they calculate a lot on how to increase their dps to the max (for every class) in order to decrease the time it takes to kill mobs and/or bosses.
Thus the “Meta” is born.
The highest dps output for a ranger isn’t as expected the longbow. It’s the sword/axe combinations that, combined with berserker gear, provide the most damage a ranger can achieve.
Some might disagree on that, but numbers don’t lie. And no matter how you look at it, a “ranger” doesn’t mean ‘ranged’. Think of a ranger as someone who manages the forest instead of playing robin hood. They can use several weapons at their disposal, but it doesn’t mean it’s always the best choice they make.
But, no matter how you play it, the fact remains that in certain situations, it’s advisable NOT to follow the “meta” if you’re not comfortable with it.
A full zerk ranger, designed in skills andtraits to maximize damage output, will be harder to play then just point and shoot. They are squishier and are prone to sudden deaths more often(depending the instance or location), which leads to the question : is it worth it if you’re not good at it ?
And you said it yourself :
When you’re hugging the floor, all that number crunching isn’t worth crap and your dps is 0.
My ranger is full zerk wielding LB and GS and occasionally a sword/axe combo. But she’s squishy and unless i’m completely into it, she will die fast. At least faster then any of my other toons who i build according to my own gameplay.
I find it rather silly that some force others to play how they want instead of letting ppl play in their own style.
I know that in a certain dungeon, my warrior, who is not built according to one or the other ‘meta’ was the last one standing and managed to ‘save the day’ by rezzing the squad while under attack from the boss. If not, it would have been a wipe and a redo, which, lets face it, would have been a loss of ‘time’. So their goes their “zerk meta” down the drain at that point, their calculations only work if all goes well. But one single mistake and you can throw out all that crap.
If i had an item that no one else would have, would i sell it for only 50G ? hell no.
If i could make more cash buy buying some stock of an item and reselliing it at a higher price, would i do it ? Hell yeh.
It’s called “improving your character(s)”. You need cash for that, and as it stands, everyone needs more cash at some point or another, that is what drives the economy.
If the so-called “rich” guy wants to be richer so that he/she can buy that oh so wanted legendary or precursor that costs an arm & a leg, all hail to them. I , and 99% of the players (if they admit it) would do the same.
If you can’t handle that (you can’t handle the truth!… lol) , then you shouldn’t be playin an mmo.
p.s. : i’m sorry you didn’t get your so wanted dye, but it’s just pixels on a screen. And we don’t always get what we want.
While standing in the safe spot on the boxes in the SE corner of the platform, the longbow easily reaches the golem.
Yeh, but i always get thrown off that ‘safe spot’ and i never seem to be able to avoid the floor aoe lightning dmg when i’m to close. At least not on my warrior , my thief doesn’t seem to have that problem.
As far as mega goes, for the most part he’s easy to hit, but sometimes, and more often then i like ppl seem to pull him towards the other end from where i’m standing (left or right) and i need to switch sides, unless i equip rifle.
Mind you, 90% of the time i just use LB, but having rifle is handy in some cases.
But anyways, you’ll always have ppl who prefer one or the other, it doesn’t matter to me just as long as it gets the job done the way i want it.
Basically :
- LB is the better weapon (most dmg)
- Rifle is handy, looks cool and has more range (if you don’t have “stronger bowstrings” trait)
I think we can nearly all agree on that.

Events: I tend to have a strong dps pet (cat/bird) and always a drake to swap for the aoe f2/combo finisher blast (only type of pets to have blast). Krytan Drakehound is nice for the f2 aoe cripple lockdown on a 20sec cd.
Breach: This depends on the boss encounter, and if you can even keep the pet alive in the 1st place. I like to swap bird out for Jungle Stalker and keep on passive just for f2 might boon.
VW mobs: I usually use Krytan Drakehound & Ice Drake to help slow (aoe chill/cripple) down mobs that are after the carrier. The Ice Drake will also have a blast finisher for the fire fields.
VW: Well keeping your pet alive can be more trouble than it’s worth. Before VW I get out of combat and swap in dps petsx2. Save your Jungle Stalker for the burn phases to help with might stacks.
I like glassbow 6/6/2/0/0
Hope it helps~
+1. Dang, we could almost be twins.
I agree that some parts of the game can be frustrating, in your case as an ele, Jormag.
But there are different ways to ‘help out’ like was stated :
rezz ppl, use zookas and use the fire shield , anticipate his skills :
- left claw raised = small ice blocks drop
- right claw raised= pillars of ice raise up (or ice walls)
- breathing air in = inducing fear
Every one of his skills can be countered or you can retreat back before he launches it.
That’s the beauty of a worldboss, you’re not alone in the fight and you don’t need to be a massive dmg dealer to aid in the battle.
One bit of worry though : if you encounter a thief with sigil of cleansing on their weaponset : no condi pressure to put on. (i always use those, i find cleansing sigils the most awesome out there, aside from torment)
@Sthenith.5196: Rangers can do melee
Yeah.. go to play with a Ranger melee and Good Game ^^
The point was that rangers don’t complain about being medium armors even though some(most) of the rangers use GS or S/Axe as secondary weapon.
Thieves are already high dmg dealers, there’s no need for us to have heavy armor. And it would look utterly rediculous.
Oh, one more thing :
on my build the rifle has 1200 range. Longbow 1K. So it’s perfect for worldbosses like Golem and Megadestroyer where you have ppl pushing the boss away (out of reach of LB) or where it isn’t advisable to go meleeing it.
Plenty of builds to go around, but most ppl talk about the ‘meta’ being zerker, the cause of this is the dungeon speed runs. (more dps = faster kill = faster runs)
You have different builds for each diff instance : PvP/WvW/dungeon/…etc.
I suggest you start here : http://metabattle.com/wiki/Category:All_Warrior_Builds
For dungeons, phalanx str is most used i think.
Then from there on out, rebuild your character if needed.
I saw your video (the part where it was 1st day especially) and i noticed at some point that your opponent was at 1/3rd of its hp, and you retreat. IF at that point, when he was close to you, you would have used caltrops (with dodging) you could have kept the pressure up (bleeds), jump right back in and do a combo to try to finish him off.
Like i said, you have to anticipate a bit (when possible) when an enemy wants to come close, at that point pressure him and evade. There is nothing more annoying then someone pressuring you till you make a mistake.
