Hello again!
I disappeared into my Bat-Cave again and finally emerged, and with some good news to share. I’ll start off with what exactly that is.
Since my last updates, we’ve been hard at work prepping some serious server-side optimizations to relieve the bottle-necks during heavy combat. We’ve made some large steps and are almost ready to start rolling out these changes. The first batch of changes have been in testing and we hope to have them start trickling in as soon as the release on Nov. 12th. We’ll know for sure once we’re closer to that date, and so will you.
I can’t stress enough how dangerous it is to optimize a live game. I know how upsetting it can be to be in the thick of a choppy battle, but things are going to be getting better, and soon. We’ve done some temporary things on the back-end to try to ease the influx of players in Wvw, but those changes only go so far.
On to answering some of the common questions.
A lot of you have noticed what seems like an increase in skill-lag in Wvw since the beginning of Season 1. Really, this is just a large influx of players playing Wvw, mostly in servers that usually don’t have queues to get into the map. A lot of the higher tiered servers are pretty used to large battles running into this issue, but obviously that isn’t a valid excuse for it happening. We’ve only increased the focus on relieving this since the season start, and rest-assured, its a top priority.
Some other common suggestions/questions is about a method other games used, which is known as “time-dilation” or “time-scaling”. Well, for starters, this method is extremely risky. We’ve discussed this, among quite a few other alternatives, and it has boiled down to causing more problems than it’ll solve. I know you might ask, “but the current experience is bad enough, how could it be worse?”. Well, to be completely honest, it would just open another can of worms that would end up breaking the game and causing things much worse than a couple seconds of input delay. We opted instead to focus on fixing the issue by simply making the game run better, instead of sweeping it under the rug by watering down the experience. Internally we have the ability to slow down time-scale of the game, and it just feels terrible. Not to mention breaks key mechanics of the game, such as the physics simulation.
Some other assumptions I’m seeing is about our server hardware and inefficient use of communication between them and the game’s database. I’ll go ahead and put these assumptions to rest. Our server hardware was actually purchased new right around the launch of the game, rest assured its not out-dated. And you can sleep at night knowing that our combat doesn’t connect out to the database for information. All of the information it needs is already loaded into memory. The game database is simply for storing persistent character and account information, which is for the most part only accessed when loading in/out of a map or periodic saves which are handled asynchronously. I suggest checking out the links below for more information on our servers.
As far as skills just not executing (noticed some people claiming utilities are more susceptible to this), its mostly just a race-condition as far as processing on the server. You’ll notice that your auto-attack skill seems to process more reliably than other skills. This is mostly due to the fact that we process things like auto-attack timers before player input. Obviously that sounds like a bug (and honestly now that I think about it, I want to look into doing something about it), but the reality is that under normal circumstances, the player input would process before the auto-attack timer triggers. Something you can try to verify this is disabling your auto-attack and see if your other skills become more responsive.
For you tech savvy folks, here’s some good links to help understand our server infrastruture and some other pretty neat things: Link – Another Link!
Well, that’s it for today. I’ll be sure to update you all on our progress and when you can start looking for major improvements. Like I mentioned above, we’re pretty optimistic that this could be as early as our next release. Have a good weekend!

Don’t expect double FPS overnight
. Also, the changes I mentioned will mostly only be noticeable in combat or in large groups of creatures/players.

If you double the FPS in 2 months I will buy $1000 worth of gems…I am not kidding…
Guess I wont get a big visa bill this month

Over a month ago there was a dev post regarding performance that indicated that they are rolling out performance patches within the 4-6 week timeframe.
We hopefully will be seeing one shortly and perhaps even with the next patch.
I doubt that there will be a miracle patch but any amount of incremental performance boost would be appreciate. Can you provide the link?
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
I am bumping this since I am wondering if the devs can give us an update on performance patches.

Chris, More meaningful and mature content would be much appreciated!
When I look at the concept art for GW2 I get that sense of epicness that the art gives, but unfortunately the game seems to need more of the emotion.
Glad you guys recognize this! This would be a massive improvement of the game!
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
Warrior, my new main.
Gunning for eternity but I am sure that will take some time
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
I think that the main reason most people loved Flame and Frost was the dungeon experience. There was that sense that you changed events and made a difference in the game, not to mention the encounters were just well designed and fun.
We, as players need to be emotionally engaged in the content. I honestly don’t really care about any of the characters in the LS with the exception of F&F. I don’t care if Scarlet blows something up or kidnaps someone because I am not emotionally involved in her character.
Why is it that I was emotionally involved in the stories from GW1 and not in GW2?
Make the player more central to the story itself and not part of a zerg experience.
You guys are doing a great job with the cutscenes though! Keep that up and maybe get more in there
This last LS with the tower, I just haven’t bothered. Why do I care about the spore things? Who are these two characters in the initial cutscene? I am not emotionally involved or interested to do the achievements.
I sincerely hope that the LS does affect the world more and adds permanent content at the same time without having to zerg.
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
do you HAVE to have a laptop?
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
One thing that I can think of is uninstalling MSI afterburner, running a registry cleaner(CCleaner is awesome) and reinstalling the application.
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
I had the exact same board before I built this system. Was a solid mid range board imo for the price.
Hopefully the deletion of the local.dat file will help you out.
I really cant think of any other reason for your fps issues. Maybe try putting the CCC settings to default?
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
Apparently they moved the .dat
Here is the location now:
C:\Users\YourComputerUserName\AppData\Roaming\Guild Wars 2
delete the local.dat and see how that goes.
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
I was wondering why we no longer have the local.dat file?
Was it deleted and placed somewhere else? Am I just tired and in dire need of more caffeine?
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
I don’t seem to have one either which is odd. It seems perhaps Anet altered the client?
Usually deleting the local.dat file would reset the game settings(graphics, audio etc).
I know they are tweaking performance recently but I don’t know why they would delete that file.
You could also try to repair the client using the repair function.

intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
I would delete the local.dat file and redo the settings from scratch.
It is possible that might help.

Does your PSU have enough power for your new card and are the 6 and 8 pin connectors in place?
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
You can try to turn on supersampling and see if that affects the GPU usage then switch back to normal, as well as monitor the fps.
Upgrading to a newer GPU would constitute better fps with the same settings.
Are you using a OSD for the MSI for ingame monitoring?
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
Did you re install the drivers?
Is the new card in the x16 pcie slot?
Are the ingame settings the same as before?
Are the CCC settings the same as before?
Just a few things off the top of my head
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
I want my 7ghz 12 core CPU so I can play GW2 in zergs at 60fps
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
Static voltage, since I am not really concerned with heat.
My H100i keeps it to a max of 70c during loads in GW2 with fans on Balanced mode.
If I do folding then I can see it go to 80c with the fans sounding like a harrier taking off lol.
I might do offset later on just to see if I can get it down a bit more since the difference is actually fairly high(on the good side)
I generally idle at 32c which is pretty good.
I got some new fans from Corsair(they are awesome for RMA!) since my old ones had bearing issues. They sent the wrong set the first time(3 pin not 4) and sent another set for free. I never paid a red cent.
I was really disappointed with the voltage required but after putting everything together and getting my system stable, I didnt really want to drive an hour back to the store where I bought it to get a replacement lol.
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
With any K series CPU you will be placed into the CPU lottery.
I lost the lottery with my 3770k which needs 1.36v to boot to 4.5ghz
I am happy with my oc and decided not to return the CPU.
The TIM in the 3k and 4k series is terrible. I speculate that this was done for a two fold reason by Intel. One to keep costs low and Two to keep clocks lower so users will have to upgrade more frequently. Just a theory
I have read that many people have issues with voltages when trying to get the 4700k’s to 4.5 due to the TIM thermal limitations. More people seem to delid their 4k series to avoid this.
As per other posts tho, don’t let that deter you from getting the newest chipset
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
and what of us that want a Shortbow that shoots Nyancats or random barnyard fowl?
Hmm?
YES! And when your in a downed state the Nyan cats can circle your body and lick your face!
Quip, Dreamer, Moot and to a lesser extent Meteorlogicus are just ridiculous.
We need more epic weapons and armor not Nyan cats and baby quaggans.

lol
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
How is that different than now. People just do the metas when the timer on the API says so and then, poof, your in overflow
Stagnation via repetition of content can hurt even a MMO.
The expansions of GW1 provided MUCH more than any LS could ever give.
I believe that LS will not hold people’s attention that much longer if the current Anet Meta remains the same.
Good thing there are a ton of new games coming out!
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
lol that is the coolest Norn Guardian in the game! You should get the new rainbow extra particle effect GS that has a trail of raspberry cupcakes(with sprinkles!) for free good sir!
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
Since the game will never run significantly better than what we have now without some dedicated recoding of the engine, perhaps anet can start to make the content match the limited power of their engine.
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
I’d have to agree with this. All this is doing is alienating the majority of the playerbase. Don’t get me wrong, I think there are plenty of ways for Anet to make a quick buck here and there, but when EVERYTHING is in the cash shop, it just makes the whole thing feel shallow.
So you’re telling me that the majority of the player base can’t spare $10 for an armor set? lol.
Anet wants you to spend that $10. I want more armour skins that need to be earned and not just bought.
The armour isn’t even close to being ad bad as the rng weapons lol I doubt you get one with that $10.
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
I can tell you what is in the tower….two blues and a green.

Oh how the mighty have fallen….
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
Gw2 is about profit and not entertaining content that users want.
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
Too late for some already.
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
Thing that would be worth playing is expansions. New maps, new game types like polymock, new skills, new dungeons, events with minigames that can actually be competitive like in gw1, better looking skins, new races, new professions, etcetc.
And that’s only for the pve part.
Instead what anet did for the past year:
Add stupid story events every month that’s only got 30mins max of fun and the rest of the month its farming in blobs of 50+ man. I miss the old gw1 team
You and me both
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932

I wonder if this will get deleted as well?

ANET: Take this opportunity to get the healing skill without having to spend 25 skill points! You must do it now, or you’ll lose this chance once living world moves on!
Players: But, ANET, spending 25 skill points is actually the best way to do it…
That moment where you realize that the shortcut, the “opportunity”, is actually worse than the normal way.
It’s all about tricking impulse buyers.
