Odd that it depends on the character you’re using.
You could try to roll back the drivers to a previous version and see if it helps.
It seems that you’re definitely not alone in this matter

Edit: I found the bug itself. Just do not install the latest driver 320.18 but an elder. Now everything works Impeccable
So try using an older version of the driver and see how that goes

A heatsink is a cooling solution for your CPU.
Your HAF XM should fit the H100
I would get the H100i since it comes with corsair link and you can use software to control the fans and monitor the heat etc.
Water coolers are usually more expensive but have the advantage of being less bulky.
Air coolers are are generally cheaper but are bulky(The Noctua NH-D14 works great but it is big).
A good watercooler usually performs pretty close to a high end air cooler so either way you will be fine.
As for the pasta I am guessing you mean thermal paste or TIM. The corsair TIM is pretty good and I found I got better results from using that then artic silver.
I don’t think that the Noctua comes with thermal paste so you might have to buy that separate.

Your FPS is normal for that system and this game
GW2 is very unoptimized and even people with high end rigs get underwhelming performance.
Don’t get a new pc for GW2, in it’s current state there is 0 reason to waste the money.

I remember people with the 660(ti) having this issue. To my knowledge I don’t remember that there was a fix for it but more research might find something.
If you cant replicate the error using folding/stress tests then it would be logical to think that it is something in the game.
Did you check the crash log to see if there was any error messages? The dump file should give you an idea on what is going on.
The bad part about this is that Anet hasn’t given a response to my knowledge about the 660 issue which seems to affect many people.

Noctua has some great coolers but you can also go for an H100i or Nzxt Kraken X60 are good as well. If you’re going closed loop make sure that your case will support the cooler.
I use the H100i and it has been great for my moderate OC. I have never gone over 80c in stress tests and putting the fans on balanced it seems to be very quiet as well.

Turn sampling to native. Turn reflections to terrain and sky or off completely. The game is still being optimized(hopefully).
Overclocking your CPU will help quite a bit but make sure you have a good cooler. There are tons of resources on the internet to help you with overclocking.
www.overclockersclub.com is a good site to get started. They have guides to help people who are new to overclocking get started.
Hope that helps.

I am not familiar with the 740m since it is new but looking at the specs online I would think that you will get away with medium settings.
The problem with GW2 is that it is CPU bound and loves raw clocks. Your 3.2 ghz turbo i5 will be ok but it will slow down during large zergs and meta events.
I have never liked laptops for gaming but you will most likely be ok with that one considering it’s limitations.

I have stopped using reflections completely which is really too bad because the game looks amazing with them on all but I don’t like stressing my card at 99% for the long game sessions that I play in GW2.
Hopefully they can fix the occlusion or delete it completely and put a simple ground texture beneath the surface.

Hiya~!
My suggestion is to place on the main GUI a Ping Icon like we had in GW1~!
How many times have you wondered why you were lagging and were curious about the latency?
I looked for this suggestion before but I couldn’t find one(although I am tired).
Hope you guys put this in the game I can guarantee that everyone would be appreciative of it.

I had this issue with my old X6 system and I purchased a new PSU and it fixed the issue. It might be the same issue and it might not be.
If you could borrow a PSU and test it that would be your best bet.
Monitor your voltages and make sure that the rails are ok. If you have a PSU tester that would be perfect but most people don’t have those

Is Umbra affecting underground reflections?
in Account & Technical Support
Posted by: Stormcrow.7513
Hi,
So I have been doing a little bit of ingame testing and I cannot believe how poorly the reflections in this game have been implemented.
Looking at the ground with nothing around me but the ground, it seems that the game will render reflections when there is 0 water around.
As it has been previously mentioned that the performance hit from reflections is huge perhaps Anet can answer the question as to why the game is rendering ALL of the water below the maps?(who hasnt fallen through the map and seen water!)
Is this because of an issue with Umbra Occlusion technology not working as advertised?
Could the water beneath all of Tyria be removed for a broad spectrum performance increase of over 20%?
Can any Devs answer these questions?
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
You’re never going to get 60+fps in WvW zergs..noone can, but you should be ok for pve on ultra and you could probably get away with supersampling as well. You also will not get 60+fps in PVE zergs but, to my knowledge there isn’t a computer on the planet that can do that.
GW2 will not use all your 6cores/12 thread effectively so I hope your getting that CPU for other reasons.
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
You sir seem to have won the lottery on your i7..what voltage are you at? I got a dud that runs 4.5 at 1.30v…
And yes losing 20 frames is normal for big events.
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
Your best bet is to try to get a i5 4670k/3570k with a good cooler and overclock it.
I dont know prices in lbs but it will be more than that fx. If you do decide to get the fx6100 get a good aftermarket cooler and try to OC that CPU to at least 4ghz.
The bad thing is that GW2 basically requires you to overclock your processor in order to get acceptable framerates. This is due to it having an unoptimized engine and being overly CPU bound.

I enjoyed the last statement that says “Guild Wars 2 is a important and popular game and we will continue to investigate possible optimizations”…I don’t think there has been one since that initial driver release. It continues "…but like Skyrim I image the biggest improvement will come from a game update that improves the CPU side of things(if you’re unfamiliar with the Skyrim example, a patch improved performance by up to 25% by optimizing CPU-related code).
So Nvidia basically said that there is not much we can do just wait for Anet to patch the CPU side code like Skyrim did, but the problem is that there hasn’t been a patch that has optimized performance by 25%.
The game doesn’t run smoothly at the best of times and the introduction of a recent microstutter just compounds the issue.
I saw an interview where they were looking at ways to reduce the particle effects but in all honesty this should have been in the game since beta.
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932

intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
Is your 3570k overclocked? If it isn’t you might want to invest in a good aftermarket cooler and try to get your CPU to 4.5Ghz. That will help alot.
Also try turning reflections to Terrain & Sky as well as lowering the shadows to high or less.
Everyone gets performance hits in large boss like areas and WvW so you’re not alone.
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
The only games off the top of my head that use 8 cores effectively is Crysis 3 and Battlefield 3. GW2 uses 3 to 4… I am getting sick of the crappy performance of this game, especially after 9 months!
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
I am starting to get concerned as well about the 99% useage. Any DEVS reading this?
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
The problem is with the engine itself. The game was created using an old API with a modified GW1 engine.
The design of GW2 requires multiple players on the same map but the engine cannot handle it.
You can have a $5000 custom loop system and still have performance issues.
Skill lag is a combination of the client and Anet’s servers not being able to handle the data.
Culling in PVE was supposed to be addressed but I don’t really see how it will help at all since it really doesn’t in WvW.
The WvW culling patch took the onus from Anet over to the end user.
Try doing WvW with Highest/Highest in a T1 zerg..it doesn’t matter what system you have.
I agree that they really need to get working on this because there is going to be some steep competition coming very soon.

It is brutal.
I was in the middle of doing ALL of my guild missions and then I get the continuous loading screens.
I did a check and I am losing packets near Anet servers as well as Anet themselves.
When ingame, messages would take almost a minute sometimes to show.
It would be a GREAT idea for Anet to insert a ping monitor (remember when we had that in GW1…boy it was great!).
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
The general consensus is that an i5 4670k/3570k or i7 4770k/3770k are great. You can also get an FX 8350 from AMD. I don’t know about the new Richland APUs from AMD but they should be ok.
The big thing about GW2 is that it is unoptimized and is a CPU pig. My 3770k is overclocked and I still get performance hits in zergs and other situations.
Those extra threads from the i7 and Fx CPUs will also help with streaming
Hope that helps you out a bit.

So Anet cheaped out and didnt pay for the most recent sdk? That doesn’t really make sense but who knows :P
I actually think that the problems are with Umbra really.
http://www.umbrasoftware.com/en/
The cause is semantical since the issue is affecting many users and most of them don’t even realize it.
I will pop in and out of the game for now until they decide to fix the performance and optimization nightmare that is GW2

I use supersampling and everything at max(high/ultra) settings with 1920×1080 rez so 99% seems high but within the realm of reason.
I think that maybe Anet is testing(with us as guinea pigs) offloading some processes from the CPU to the GPU.
I agree with you though Duck that a GTX 680 and especially a GTX 690 shouldn’t be running at 99% considering the graphics that GW2 brings to the table.
Hank, I have read about other players having that issue with the 660Ti as well, and that specific issue has been known for quite some time and to my knowledge there hasn’t been any resolution to the problem.
In a nutshell the game is the most unoptimized game that I have ever come across…ever. With an antiquated API and dreadfully old engine(GW1 engine modded) I can’t really see any “miracle” patches…ever.
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
I really wish a dev would maybe say something about the microstuttering because it is unbelievably annoying.
Could it be network lag maybe(maybe a ping indicator would be nice in the GUI :P)
Some dev notes about the performance optimizations would be nice as well!
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
What CPU are you using CrazyDuck? The CPU could be bottlenecking your card, although I know they are doing optimizations so it could also be that.
A GTX 690 is overkill for GW2 at the moment at shouldnt be using 99%
My GTX 680oc is running at 99% as well during the same situations, but I have noticed my CPU use is more than 11-20%.
Don’t forget that GW2 will only use 3 heavy threads and doesn’t use the full resources of a 4core8thread CPU.
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
My system is considered a medium/low performance gaming PC and even higher spec systems have issues with the game. There is really nothing that you or anyone with the exception of Anet can do to make the game run better.
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
[…]
I remember when Anet turned down Nvidia and AMD help with optimization and I really couldn’t believe it.
[…]So they really did turn down an offer to get help with optimization?
Do you remember where and when you read about it?And why would they not want help with it?
I mean it´s a really important part of ANY game that should
get as much attention as posible, especially when there are
big problems like in this case.
It was when the last optimizations were done to the Nvidia drivers and that was the last time they did anything for GW2. It was probably about 8 months or more. There was a link(which I cant find) from an Nvidia dev that explained how GW2 is very CPU bound and that they offered to help Anet with optimizations for their cards only to be turned down. I wish that I could find the link but it might be lost to the annals of the internet.
As to why they would turn down any help? I have no idea. Maybe they figured that the inhouse techs could handle it or maybe that there was no issue in their minds.
Either way, there has been 0 work done for GW2 on both AMD and Nvidia drivers since that point about 8 months ago, and it shows. There are still issues with AO and graphic bugs, textures and the like.
After Anet said in a patch note that they were doing optimizations to the game I really haven’t seen any improvement. I get the feeling that we will be stuck with the performance of this game throughout it’s life cycle.

The erratic nature of performance in this game is a direct result of the lack of polish that the entire game has.
I can’t remember any game let alone a AAA title that has had 0 performance tweaks in 9 months.
I spent over $1000 upgrading my pc(had to be done anyways) and have witnessed very little improvement overall.

There is very little to no Risk vs Reward content in GW2. If you want money you can do only a few things. Grind COF. Play the TP like an economist(how is that fun?) or grind orr/shores.
I find myself not even wanting to do meta events like dragons because the one rare I get will basically cover the WP cost to and from the event plus a little profit for my 30 min or more to do the actual event.
In GW2 the rich get richer by TP manipulation and the people who play the game make little to no rewards.
Lets not forget Anet LOVES RNG. RNG was in GW1 but not as much as this game.
The lack of meaningful engaging content coupled with the less than spectacular rewards is what is driving me from this game and onto other things
