This is the games’ “black sheep issue”, performance.
You will get 0 response from a dev on their own official forum(which might as well be reddit).
You will get 0 performance updates, one year is nothing when the mantra is “it will be done when it is done”
You will get 0 performance upgrades from future technology since CPUs are going parallel.
You will get 0 fps using the minimum recommended system requirements.

I have been experiencing a gamebreaking microstutter that either I haven’t noticed before or because I just made a new toon, I am more inclined to notice.
It might be the server lag because of the free weekend. My latency to their servers is about 260 ms or so. I have tried every possible fix in the graphic setting and it seems that it is only when I put the game in sub that I lose the stutter. I will not play the game in sub lol.
I hope that this clears up before the weekend, I cannot handle micro stutters, they drive me nuts.

Great post and 100% accurate. I though, do not share your sense of optimism regarding engine updates.
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
You will find all sorts of nice texture pops with the removal of culling. The game is feeding information on the 100’s of players in the zone to your CPU which is being bogged down and hasn’t had the time to help render the floor.
Expect this to happen in LA, DR and other high population zones.
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
Both Tink and iSmack are correct. There will never be significant performance updates to the game for it’s life cycle.
The game was created to have multiple players battling on screen at once but the engine cannot and will not ever be able to handle it.
Future technology will not help since current and last gen CPUs are not being utilized to their full potential.
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
The engine cannot handle the content that is in the game. Do not expect any significant performance updates for the longevity of the game.

I have a relatively high end system and I am getting 15-30+ fps in LA with Highest/Highest settings.
Zerging in Chaos maps seems to be about 30 fps or so in a full server. My issue with this patch is that no matter if I buy a “new” i9 7770k and 4x sli titans, the game will never ever run at 60fps.
It seems that Anet has chosen to fix the performance problem by moving the onus onto the end user rather than fix the blatant issue of a poorly coded client.
I have a mid range pc it is nothing special
Core i5 3330
8GB RAM
Ati Radeon 6850I have been running the game at about 60 fps for ages- no problems.
Since culling was removed my performance is even betterAccording to you this should not be possible.
Maybe the problem is on your end somewhere?
Go to Lions Arch, look at the bank entrance from the mystic forge. Turn the WvW culling settings(they are changed to character quality and amount I think) to Highest/Highest and report your fps. (yours is set to Med/Med)
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
Battlefield 3 can also utilize an i7 potential. My point is that if a quad core i5 3570k cannot be fully utilized then any future hardware upgrades will be useless.
I have played SWTOR, TERA and RIFT and had smoother game play in all of those games.
It has been a year since launch and there have been minimal performance upgrades to the game, if anything the removal of culling has downgraded performance for a lot of people.
Anet dropped the ball using a modified GW1 engine that cannot handle the game. Expect to never have any improvements, ever with GW2 until the engine is recoded and properly optimized.

If this is a preview of things to come I will look to other games, which is bad because I like GW2

When tri-core CPUs come out that run at 6ghz I will rejoice as this will be the only CPU on earth that will run this game at a solid 60fps.
With processor manufacturers moving away from raw clocks to parallel cores there will never be hardware that can make this game run as it should, thus the onus falls back to Anet to recode their modified GW1 engine to use more than 3 heavy threads.
Culling placed the game a step back performance wise for most users and cries regarding performance will fall on deaf dev ears since they cannot do anything to rectify it.
I no longer consider GW2 a AAA game.
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
So far this patch seems really uninspired…1 short cutscene, endless waves of generic mobs and a single dungeons that i can’t rate right now but it seems to be quite short.
I can’t even get to the dungeon yet. I am sick of mindless ursan zerging. Give us a game where we actually have to, dwayna forbid…think.

intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
I can understand why they removed culling in WvW, it was necessary and well needed.
In PVE most people now cannot play without lowering the amount of graphical detail. I know that I will not have 1000 names floating in mid air ruining the fantastic visuals in LA.
If players wanted to see everyone then those players made a mistake, and a big one at that.
The performance of GW2 is substandard to say the least and removing culling is just a step in the wrong direction.
Adding in DX11, 64 bit memory, better multithreading etc should have been done before launch. Even WoW(shudder) added in DX11 into their client, it is not impossible. AA support is available via 3rd party injectors(which is really really sad). I am willing to not have a month or 6 of a bad LS in order to get the game up to speed to where it “should be”.I am certain that there are tons of players who would like that as well.
IMO the implementation of DX11 etc MUST be done because the game is horribly coded to use only 3 heavy threads via the GW1 engine(modified) and it definitely does not meet the requirements that the game asks. As such, the game will never ever improve in performance without recoding the engine and even having that shiny new i9 7770k with 12 cores will not help at all.
I have a fairly decent system and I can play with Highest/Highest PvE culling settings at about 20-30 fps in LA, but I really really feel bad for the people who have lesser systems.

Having the WvW settings at lowest/lowest will affect your PvE culling. That might be why your getting good fsp. I hope that your fps issues are gone for good tho

The removal of culling is like a cop giving a speeder some nitro for his car.
The removal of culling while good on paper is just stupid since most systems will not be able to play with the level of character detail that they are used too.
I went from 45+fps in LA to 20ish fps in LA with Highest/Highest setting in the WvW tab(lol wvw tab for pve…..) Playing around with the settings didn’t seem to really matter for detail but the amount of culled characters did make a noticeable change. I was a 60fps on Lowest/Lowest.
Why in the hell would you remove culling for PvE when people are having performance issues? Why make them tied to WvW settings?
FIX YOUR GOD kitten ENGINE before you start placing the onus of settings onto the end user.
GW2 is and will always remain the worst optimized game out there and it will always remain that way.
Expect 0 performance updates. Getting new hardware will not garner any significant results since GW2 doesn’t utilize current and last gen hardware to it’s potential.
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
So it seems that the culling settings for PVE are tied with the WvW settings. Why would you do this? Do I have to redo my graphics every time I want to go to WvW from PvE?
This culling removal isn’t even a fix for performance. It makes things even worse and until there is a patch that will make the game run acceptable I can’t foresee myself playing for much longer.
Anet simply passed the buck onto the gamer instead of addressing the issue itself(which is the game is the most poorly optimized and planned game ever from a technical point).

I have experienced latency as well as rubberbanding which, I have not encountered since the beta. I expect this will be fixed by Tuesday sometime. In the meantime I am not logging in since it is somewhat unplayable.

With the removal of culling in PvE coming it will be interesting to see how many more people have performance issues.
I feel your pain Solar. Spending money on hardware that isn’t being utilized to it’s potential is disheartening to say the least.
The removal of culling will, again, put the burden onto the end user for performance. Why remove culling when there are so many performance based issues still. They are passing the buck instead of addressing the poor engine itself.
With no foreseeable “fix” for the engine coming and culling being removed there will be more people who leave this game for bigger and better things.
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
The game engine is poor at start ever since I load GW2 into my system. LA low 40 FPS… WvW down 25 FPS lowest.
A system pushing at 4.7 to 4.8Ghz 6 cores 3930k (12 virtual cores) $600 CPU and GTX TITAN to run this poorly.
p.s. no i didn’t build this system for GW2 but to run other high end games at 1440p without issues. Going back to old MMO like World of Warcraft, that game dump out 300FPS in DX9 and DX11 mode at max.
Engine is known to be very poor since Beta Week launch.
I had a feeling the game isn’t fully utilizing the GPU VRAM leads to constant loading from HDD to CPU which drags down the FPS.
Culling engine is terrible. GW2 base on Umbra Culling http://www.umbrasoftware.com/en/
I believe it is poorly use or something.

OP:
I upgraded from an X6 1055t oc to 3.5ghz on water and I can tell you that I really didn’t need to upgrade but for gaming Intel has better performance. Your video is representing synthetic benchmarks which don’t really apply to gaming
I feel your pain because for the $1000 spent on my upgrade I truly expected better performance.
Because of this antiquated engine using only 3 heavy threads there will never really be any future technology offered by either AMD or Intel to offer better performance in this game.
The onus for this well discussed issue falls directly upon the heads at Anet.

Umbra doesn’t render anything, it simply reports which objects should be passed further along in the rendering process because there’s a chance it’s visible, meaning it couldn’t be 100% excluded, from your current camera location. Any reflection code falls squarely in ArenaNet’s renderer. Water may be a 2nd or more pass after the original render pass. I’m sure reflection probably is it’s own pass.
Umbra does occlusion which doesn’t seem to work for the rendered water underneath the world map. Ever fall through the map and notice the massive ocean that is below us? Play with the reflections in an area that has 0 water, you will notice performance hits because of that ocean. It is apparent that the Umbra occlusion is not really working as intended or is not implemented correctly in the game.

Get a aftermarket cooler that will fit your case and OC the best you can. Haswell’s do get hot and even ivys are not that much better. The 10-15% increase in Haswell will be worth it for you tho. My i7 will get 4.5ghz at 1.345v which is really crappy. Sometimes you win the silicon lottery and get a good one. Think of it like RNG in GW2

Some games do use hyper-threaded cores in games, a notable one is Battlefield 3 and Crysis 3. With the new console systems coming out, devs will be using that hardware to their advantage which will translate into PC games in the very near future using those extra cores(threads).

The issue would most likely stem from a routing issue with the ISP connecting to other nodes. Think of it as a traffic jam on the way to your destination. Outside of that I know that Anet Servers do have latency issues but a ISP routing seems the most likely.

There are instances where my GPU does get to 99%, but I use supersampling with no reflections. Umbra renders the reflections of the underwater base that covers the entire GW2 world surface. Test it for yourself. Go to an area that has 0 water and play with the reflections. If Anet turned the underground water to a solid non reflective surface or Umbra worked as advertised we could all see a 10fps baseline performance increase.
GW2 is a CPU pig no doubt and the dream machine for the game would be a tri core CPU running at 5.5-6 ghz. Anet has built an engine that is fixed upon that standard. With CPU trends being multi core and not more raw clocks the game will remain in a poor state of performance no matter what hardware comes in the future. That 12 core , 20 or 100 core processor will not gain performance in GW2.
Until the game engine itself is recoded to use multi core systems more efficiently the game is basically at the best it will ever be.
I went from a AMD 6950 unlocked to a GTX 680 oc and the performance increase in GW2 was not very noticeable.
It is sad to say but this game will never have 60fps WvW Zergs until the engine itself is recoded.

Depending on how tight the budget is, a small SSD with just the OS and GW2 on it would probably not damage your wallet as much as you think. There are many models that are constantly going on sale. Boot times alone, I won’t go back to a standard HDD for the OS but then again I am spoiled :P
intel 335 180gb/intel 320 160gb WD 3TB Gigabyte GTX G1 970 XFX XXX750W HAF 932
GW2 is on my SSD and I am not worried about writes since the longevity of the SSD is very very long. By the time I see degradation I will probably have a 2TB SSD. I do notice load times increase as well from my 3tb internal back up.

I would be concerned with 74c on that CPU for sure. You should be in the 60s with an oc. Either the heatsink isn’t mounted correctly or you have a bad chip. Either way I would not put it under load until the issue is resolved.

What type of cooling are you using for that 2600k? Is it already OC’d?
As Ilithis stated you won’t get much of an improvement really if you go to Haswell
There is a patch coming with particle effect sliders and I really hope that this helps some people with fps issues, especially in WvW.
