I suggest you ask people for help in the chat or announce that you’re about to do an event at location X.

some examples:
“hi, I’m about to participate/start this event in a minute, feel free to join me”
“hi, does anyone else need this Hero Point?”

Alternatively you can look out for someone with the commander tag and follow him/her around.

Metacritic score?

Straylight.7529

The ratings tend to get better though. Most of the bad ratings that make up the current score were given within the first 72 hours after release making me question whether these people actually gave the expansion a chance at all and tried all the new additions of the three major gamemodes before slapping a 0/10 on it.

Now after some time passed the more thought-out reviews pour in. You know, from people who actually took their time to test and experience the content in more detail. You can sort the reviews/scores by date and you’ll see how the green ratings start to outnumber the red ones.

Straylight.7529

Just finished the story, I did this after they removed the massive grind of Itzel Poison to continue.
Very disappointed in how little actual story content is included in this game, especially for the price I paid. The story without having to get masteries would take maybe 2hrs at the most.
This feels like a $10 DLC package not an expansion to an MMO, I paid less than $10 for the witcher 3 expansion and that had a longer story and loads of side quests, and they had free dlc like living story aswell.
Seems like the only thing that this has introduced is a massive grind to get Elite Specializations.

10/10 for bait and switch
3/10 for content

Comparing the story content of an MMO to that of a single player rpg like Witcher 3.

Don’t even bother man. They would complain about anything . Most of them were complaining even before the release.

Pretty much this. If you look at the post history of some of the most vocal complainers you’ll see that they were very outspoken and negative about the expansion months before even the first beta weekend came out. It’s the typical “see, I told you so!” -reaction.

On the other hand it’s not even as one-sided as it looks. It’s really a toss-up between people who dislike the new mechanics and those who like it. And that’s just on the forums. In the last couple days I played on the first new map I remember only two players voicing their displeasure of the new Mastery-system in the chat.

Metacrit average of 4 says it more then a “few hundred”.

Think about it, the only purchasable content the game has can’t break a 5, they’l ldo something because the majority wants it.

You sure? The metacritic average of 4 is made up of 29 people.
So 29 people say more than a few hundred?

Oh, it just changed. It’s now an average of 4.5 made out of 30 votes

Just think about it for one second. Why do you have to grind at all to unlock what is essentially a new class? You don’t have to grind to unlock Revenant and it makes total sense, right? Why do you have to grind to get the Reaper? It’s not ascended gear, it’s not a big accomplishment, it’s simply a different way to play. Since when does GW2 locks you from being able to enjoy different ways to play?

You are comparing a new class (Revenant) to something that isn’t a new class (elite specs).

What is your argument here? Naming conventions?

You called the elite spec a new class and based your comparison upon that assumption.

You don’t have to grind to unlock Revenant and it makes total sense, right?

Yes. Because it’s a new class.

Why do you have to grind to get the Reaper?

Because it’s an elite spec and not a new class. Elite specs are meant to be a new form of character progression. Whether you feel it’s a “grind” or not is for you to decide.

3.9 Metacritc reviews, they’ll nerf it because of a majority of, as you call them, “cry babies”.

24 people gave HoT a negative score on Metacritic. Suprisingly few for a game with such a large playerbase I must say.

You must not do WvW, yes I want the lines on all my characters so that way I can have them geared and ready to go for raids. PVE only players like you wouldn’t understand, and that is evident through the fact that you all are still arguing the same nonsense points over and over again, and they have been shut down repeatedly by the people that do have a problem with the hero point grind.

There is no way in which this is not a grind.

I participate in all three game modes. If one game mode offers a more fun or convenient way to reach a certain goal than another then I simply adapt. I suggest you learn to do the same.

Virtually every complaint I have read regarding elite spec cost of 400 pts is complaining about the steepness of it and the need for it to be reduced, NOT ELIMINATED but reduced so that people can obtain then in reasonable time (especially those of us, and there are many, who dont PVE)

The expansion came out three days ago. You still have enough time to collect your hero points within reasonable time.

so you think a year or 2 is reasonable time to unlock a specialisation on a dozen characters?

That would mean one to two months per character. Yes, that sounds right to me. Keep in mind when you gather hero points on PvE maps it’s going to be even faster.

We’ll take a look at the next step “Sign Cutting” being bugged out, as well as some or all of you having to jump through hoops to get the quest to update correctly. Sorry again for the inconvenience – we’ll have the quest’s designer and QA do a deeper dive on these issues.

Still silence on the larger issue at hand, when is the elite spec grind going to be addressed?

that is a non issue, its not a grind (that would be doing the same thing over and over) and its not that hard

It absolutely is a grind, I HATE world completion content, I have 10 characters that I have to unlock the elite spec on each of them, thus doing the same, boring content that takes forever over and over again. And the WvW way is just a constant, painfully slow ktrain.

If that isn’t grinding I don’t know what is.

You are right. It is a grind. But only because you make it so. “I have to unlock the elite spec on each of them”. Self-imposed behaviour at its finest. Did you also give yourself a deadline? You act like Tony Montana is gonna show up at your door with a baseball bat if you don’t have at least 10 chars with fully unlocked elite specs.

My tip: forget about your 10 alts for a while. Pick the one you want to play first and just play that character. You can worry about elite specs for your 10 other toons later. It doesn’t have to be a chore if you don’t make it one.

No one on here is asking “How do I do this?” It’s all “I can’t do this.”

I think it’s funny you said that because in my personal opinion that’s exactly the difference between the official forums and the reddit community. Not only are there far fewer complainers on reddit but those who do complain do it in a more proactive way: they try to find solutions to their problems for example how to speed up the mastery- “grind” or find strategies to the tougher challences this x-pac has to offer etc…etc.. they actually try to tackle the stuff that annoys them.

The complainers on the this forum on the other hand almost feel like they want to be annoyed and enjoy being unsatisfied so they can keep complaining. They kick back and tell Anet to cater to their every wish instead of adapting to the different environment (in a gameplay sense not in a geographical sense) being offered by HoT.

Of course there are some posters who criticize and review their own experience in a more constructive way but unfortunately most are just whining.

So…. they should learn to make the most out of bad game design rather then ask for the game to be designed well?

Maybe they should sent Anet some cupcakes too like the folks on Reddit?

See? You’re making the same mistake again. You don’t even try to adapt. In the end it’s a two-way street. Yes, Anet needs to fix and improve some stuff to find a good middle ground (and they already started doing it. See changes to story gating) but I think the players also need to bemore flexible in how to tackle challenges. Especially since the HoT-experience is quite different than the one the core-maps offer.

But this kind of incessant whining being displayed on the forums since the last few days from people who at the first sign of challenge flip tables and throw their hands in the air is just getting pathetic to be honest.

And I think that’s what the OP was getting at when he/she said “life is more enjoyable when you rise to the challenge”. Be more flexible and try to find ways making currently unenjoyable things enjoyable for you on your own. Don’t just wait until a better HoT drops out of the sky.

I’m playing a reaper myself and all you need is 60 HP to unlock the elite specialization (you get an exotic greatsword plus the associated skin) and another 15 HP to unlock the first minor trait that allows you to go into reaper shroud. That means a total of 75 HP gives you 10 new abilities to play with.

That is enough to feel like a reaper and enjoy playing it. You absolutely don’t need 400 HP to enjoy playing a reaper. Sure, you won’t be the most effective reaper possible due to lack of reaper-traits and utility skills but at least you get a sense of progression once you unlock everything else step by step

Also I suggest trying to change your own behaviour instead of asking arenanet to cater to your self-imposed restrictions (“I don’t want to do PVE content”)

No unfortunately you will not be playing as a reaper straight away.

Why not? :P

Because Anet dissappoints. You need 400 Hero points to unlock everything. Admittedly that’s everything (armor and runes) but you won’t be able to spend your 200 from map completion to unlock reaper. It’s a bummer.

Are you sure? I have 200 unspent hero points. 60 will unlock the elite specialization. That leaves another 140 to spend. Will it give me all the traits and cosmetic items and make me the best possible reaper there is? No. Will it allow me to play as a functioning grandsword-wielding reaper with a couple of traits and utilities to boot? Yes!

ergo:

No unfortunately you will not be playing as a reaper straight away.

The flaw in your approach remains even if you did not have to try hard.

You keep mentioning that my approach is “flawed”. Comparing the most recent x-pac of WoW with the most recent x-pac of HoT is not flawed.

I said that I was NOT going to compare HOT to burning crusade, whose amount of content is above the industry standard: two new races, a new continent, flying mounts, many dungeons, eye of the storm, team arena… All this sold at $10 less than the vanilla.

I can also make a list of HoT features and call is above the industry standard. What is the industry standard anyway? HoT also sells $10 less than the vanilla GW2.

What I meant is that you should compare HOT to a typical xpac. Not Burning Crusade whose content is much more than a typical xpac, or some other xpac which you claimed to be below average. Saying HOT is comparable to some not-so-good xpac is hardly a compliment.

What is a “typical” xpac? Let me guess: every xpac that offers more than HoT. Oh wow you just won the argument.

Beta testing also matters. Do you want a finished product or work in progress?

No MMO is ever finished. An MMO is always a work in progress.

I am talking about the beta testing phase before release. It’s fine if you think it’s acceptable to do insufficient beta testing, but many others will disagree.

Arenanet deemed it sufficient. Whether you or I deem it sufficient enough is completely irrelevant. Also the beta testing of the original GW2 wasn’t more extensive either (I remember three to four beta weekends) and the launch was OK.

At what point does “coming shortly after release” end?

If you’re refering to raids this might help you:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tM8cgQ42bMQ&feature=youtu.be&t=958

first wing sometime after HoT ships…definitely long before the holidays

since there aren’t many months left in 2015 you’ll be able to raid soon, just not on day 1.

And that still doesn’t change the fact that what is being released “soon after launch™” isn’t even a complete raid. They’re touting raids (plural) as a feature, when they don’t even have a single raid done yet.

The raid is complete. They just don’t release all the wings at once. Standard procedure when it comes to raids in MMO’s

They call it “raids” (plural) because they aim to include more of them in the future.

Johanson describes Heart of Thorns as being the roadmap for Guild Wars 2’s future. Raids are planned as one of the core components of the expansion’s regular live updates

source: http://www.pcgamer.com/raids-are-coming-to-guild-wars-2-heart-of-thorns/

whether he refers to the different wings of one raid as “raids” or truly several entire raids is unclear. If the the first raid we get shortly after launch is received well I see no reason why they wouldn’t come up with more of them in the future.

Frankly, I don’t care what WoW has done or how they handled their releases. It doesn’t matter in this at all. But if they’re advertising raids as an expansion feature, then not releasing them along with said expansion, they are releasing an unfinished product. ‘Soon after’ is not ‘at launch’.

But it DOES matter. It’s commonly accepted that raids don’t open up on day 1 since no one would be able to play it anyway.

Labeling HoT an unfinished product because the raid doesn’t open on day 1 is just silly. Do you want to raid on launch day?

Why exclude raids? Because it’s one of the more obvious examples? I think that should make it the best one to list.

Because the raid IS coming. Shortly after release. Therefore you can’t put it on the “missing/incomplete/broken” list. People need time to get their masteries up and prepare accordingly. In WoW the first raid also comes weeks after release and the wings open up step by step yet no one is complaining there. It’s completely normal for an MMO to open the gates of a raid after release and not on day 1.

Perhaps you don’t think so, but I see a distinct difference between ready at launch and coming soon™. If one of your main features isn’t ready on launch day, your game isn’t ready at launch.

That means every WoW-expansion, the most successful MMO to date, wasn’t ready at launch. LMAO.

Fractal changes, legendaries and squad UI are features but not main features. Main features are the stuff displayed on the official HoT homepage like new maps, guild halls, WvW, etc… all ready at launch.

But given Anet’s preference for living story releases over personal story, it’s likely a safe bet to say that HoT’s story won’t be complete at launch either. They’ve not really given much indication of the amount of story content coming at launch, which is something I’d expect to be hyped if it existed.

The living story is a continuation of the personal story. Just because it’s going to be released afterwards doesn’t mean the story is incomplete. By that definition the story would always be incomplete.

There is a big difference between the ever-changing/evolving nature of MMOs and releasing a game with major features missing, incomplete, or broken.

Which major features are you refering to? And please don’t say raids. We know they’re coming shortly after release.

This is why your approach is flawed: Nobody is saying that HOT is the worst xpac in gaming history, so you should compare it to a typical xpac, instead of trying hard to find another xpac that is below the standard (this not say that the wow xpac is one as I haven’t bought it).

I’m not even trying hard…I simply chose the most recent x-pac of WoW. The game you brought into the discussion.

I could have also mentioned that burning crusade had a new race, but I didn’t, since I wanted to make a fair comparison.

You keep mentioning Burning Crusade which is from 2007. Why do you reach so far into the past to make a point?

We are talking about pve content, so yeah, dungeons matter. The latest wow xpac has garrisons, so it’s not there is no “housing” content in it (if you are thinking of guild halls).

I never said dungeons do not matter. I simply pointed out that in WoW you’re “locked” into dungeons instead of zones while in GW2 you’re locked into Zones. Wow has to come up with something to make up for the poor replayability of their zones. That something happens to be dungeons and raids. Since HoT already offers more content in their zones (certainly more than WoW’s) they maybe don’t feel the need to throw in half a dozen dungeons?

Garrisons were not very well received. In fact so badly that the next WoW-expansion won’t feature them. Whether Guild Halls are going to be better or worse remains to be seen.

Beta testing also matters. Do you want a finished product or work in progress?

To be honest you can look up most of that stuff on the internet.

  • How big are the 4 zones?

No one knows but it’s safe to assume that the other 3 maps are equal in size to Verdant Brink.

  • Are the zones all like SW and DT, or are they more like the core zones. I’m not a fan of either SW/DT, and this is a make-or-break issue for me.

They are going to be more like SW/DT. Though I’d give it a chance if I were you since what we’ve seen from the beta so far Verdant Brink isn’t just a copy of SW/DT. More an evolution of it.

  • Just how much of a role does verticality play?

It allows hangliding and makes the map more complex when it comes to navigation than a flat map. Also it makes you feel like you’re in a 3D jungle instead of just a flat map with very large trees.

  • I already know enough about the Elite specs to know that half of them hold no appeal for me. I would like to hear more about the ones I might like.

Well…look it up. You already managed to do that apparently.

  • Will Anet make changes to its LW release approach to a form that is more appealing to me? While 2 was better than 1 in terms of the story, they used story elements that I did not enjoy, like DE2. Will the LWS3 story be worth playing through?

Impossible to say without actually playing LWS3.
DE2 is bound to stay.

Anyone not buying HoT and still playing ?

I didn’t get the latest wow xpac, but still your approach is flawed. Among the 5 xpacs of wow, you chose one that you think has the least amount of content and compare it to the only xpac of GW2. This is hardly a fair comparison..

LMAO that’s exactly what I did.

Why is it not a fair comparison? Please elaborate. Don’t just say it.

You also ignored other stuff in a typical wow xpac, such as new dungeons. You also ignored the amount of work/time that Blizzard spent on closed beta testing for each xpac.

Of course I ignored the “other stuff”. You talked about the HoT maps and how much more it takes to create a continent (like dreanor) vs. the Maguuma Jungle. Of course I’m not going to mention WvW or guild halls or new classes in that context.

This is something that I wouldn’t agree. Each wow xpac that I bought (starting from burning crusade) had many new dungeons at launch. Having many new maps to level up your characters will make character progression less boring. You can hop to a different map to level up your character if you are bored of the current map.

The 4 HoT maps offer far more content than the 6 maps (only 5 if you play one faction) of WoW’s latest expansion. WoW’s maps offer very little replayability.

The launch price of each xpac is also $10 less than the vanilla. It certainly takes more work to create a new continent than to create 4 new maps.

If you are strictly talking about creating geographic landscape (without monsters, quests, voiceacting etc…) then you can bet your kitten that it took Arenanet more time to create 4 HoT maps than the couple of flat 2D-maps WoW-expacs offer since over a decade.

With 4 maps in HOT, you are locked into them and do things repeatedly to progress horizontally, which is more boring. Yes, people do go back to level 60 maps such as Dry top and silverwaste, but it’s really boring for many, so for people who think that SW grind is boring, the four new maps probably won’t be very interesting.

The 4 HoT maps offer far more content than the 6 maps of WoW’s latest expansion. WoW’s maps offer very little replayability. Also I’d rather be “locked” into actual maps with replayability instead of the couple of dungeons you’re locked in when playing WoW. Also whether horizontal progression is more or less boring than vertical progression is a matter of personal opinion. Arenanet went for horizontal progression and had great success with it.

Personally, I’ve never experienced an MMO or x-pac where people don’t rush the forums after a couple of weeks complaining “there’s nothing to do anymore”. Don’t put too much stock into these people. Those are the type of players who rush through the content and jump from one MMO to the next. They were never meant to be retained anyway.
When GW2 released the same thing happened and yet here we are with the game still going strong.

vets are already good at the game, will blow through the story and events and unlock masteries after a couple solid weeks..especially with weekends…

I’m a vet and I won’t blow through the content. Just because you’re a vet doesn’t mean you have to rush through the content. I think you seriously underestimate the amount of casual players in GW2. If you play a couple of hours per week you certainly won’t be done with the expansion in just a couple of weeks.

I really really doubt it has enough content for 1000 hours.

It doesn’t have to. It only costs $50 afterall.

Anyone with half a brain can see a trainwreck is coming. I would not be surprised if the whole game goes off-line for a while once the expansion starts because of problems and bugs. Slowdowns and crashes are already happening and I figure it probably will only get worse. This is what happens when you release unfinished unfocused software. I mean where are the dragons, the new stories, another set of lands to explore, new dunguons?? They aren’t even in this so called expansion. I’ll probably stop playing til after Thanksgiving so they can get their stuff together.

This might help you find them:

I have never seen an expansion offer so little for the same price as the base game, name me some other expansions like this.

Are you refering to expansions of MMO’s where you have to pay a monthly fee?

Yes

Warlords of Draenor: Costs 50$ plus another 15$ per month. Does if offer more content per dollar than HoT?

Heavensward: Costs 40$ plus another 12-15$ per month. Does it offer more content per dollar than HoT?

Hell, no!

As I said earlier these games have a fluff level cap increase to restart grinds and add new skills and still have five times the content this gives. It was GW2s choice not to go subscription, it wasn’t made for it, it would have died like Wildstar had it been subscription.

Nope, they don’t. That is simply not true.

-Did the 7 maps we got in Warlords of Dreanor (6 at release) offer five times more content than the 4 HoT maps?

-Did the ashran pvp-zone offer five times more content than stronghold + new WvW map?

-Did the garrisons offer five time more content than guild halls?

-Did they add five times more skills to WoW-classes than the combined number of skills we get across all specializations?

and you have to pay a subscription fee on top of that if you want continuous access!

29 entire pies of pizza>4, alright 8>1, 5 per class>1. Tell me the stories of the single player games with 1,000s of hours of content besides dwarf fortress. I don’t know how you think those 4 maps are as big as 29 somehow.

They don’t need to be as big as 29 maps. HoT is an expansion and not GW3 afterall. The cost for the expansion is 50$ which is pretty much standard for expansions.

If you think 50$ is too much than that’s your decision but judging from the beta weekends and what we’ve seen so far from the Verdant Brink map you’re gonna miss out big time when it comes to quality and content!
