For me the most memorable part of the story was either where you get chased by Faolain or the discovery of Rata Novus.

The music that played during those missions definitely played a big part to make them stand out so much.

I find this fairly embarassing to be honest. The character creation being such a vital part of any game shouldn’t bug out in such a drastic way that it leaves customers unable to create new characters.

And if it does then it should receive top priority in resolving it. But that is clearly not the case since it’s been more than 24 hours since I’m unable to create a new character.

That's enough!

If I understand this right:

You’re complaining about players who are complaining the game THEY bought under the pretenses of “casual, grindless MMO” is now a grindfest with no room for casuals?

They have every right to complain in my opinion, they did after all make a purchase based off marketing tactics produced by this company. A selling point to most players now rendered void.

Arenanet made it very clear that HoT is going to offer the most challenging content to date. Everyone who spent 15 minutes googling the expansion before purchasing knew that. Those who didn’t only have themselves to blame.

So the verticality of the maps was fun for you at first and now it’s not fun anymore?

Or was it never fun to begin with?

If it’s the latter then the new maps never “lost their appeal” to you.
They were never appealing to you in the first place.

In my experience Masteries allow me to interact with the world in a more meaningful and fun way than before. I do not get the same feeling when grinding for armor in other MMO’s like WoW. If WoW’s armor actually made me more powerful by giving me new abilities or techniques to dispatch enemies in a smarter way then I would feel a sense of accomplishment. However all it does is preventing me from falling behind the gear treadmill.

I like how the mastery system of GW2 focuses mainly on improving/modifying the way you interact with the world instead of just putting you in an endless loop of “you get stronger-enemy gets stronger-you get stronger-enemy gets stronger” etc..

The accomplishment you get from collecting stronger armor in games like WoW or FFXIV is nothing more but an illusion. Better gliding techniques and modifying your character temporarily with mushrooms is not an illusion.

Also keep in mind with masteries they have way more freedom to implement new exciting ways to improve your character in the future. With gear grind all you get is more attributes like endurance, strenght, mana etc.. and the only thing it allows you to do is fighting enemies that also have more stats.

In general the expectation is that products be designed and adapted to meet the needs and desires of consumers, not the other way around.

That might be true for a kickstarter project. HoT however is not a kickstarter project.

Well, I just spent 3 freaking hours, I got one hp, just because there was a fight in progress, finally got the the next one, spent over 2 hours trying to get help with one stupid champ.

Thanks Anet for making the game Stupid hard. So glad I paid you guys 50 bucks for this. So awesome of you to make a game you simply cant play by yourself. Never again.

MMO’s are by definition not meant to be played alone. If you play an MMO you need to be mentally prepared that some of the content is designed around groups of several people.

If you have the desire to solo everything in a game I can recommend lots of singleplayer games that can be played all by yourself.

Coming into an MMO-forum like you just did and demanding it be nerfed to the ground so it can be played like a singleplayer game is frankly quite ridiculous.

Guild Wars 2 is an MMO and will always have a certain amount of content that requires a coordinated effort from several people. That won’t change no matter how much you dislike it.

I understand you’re frustrated with the increase in difficulty on the new maps but I suggest you motivate yourself in tackling these new challenges or look for a different genre of video games.

I don’t believe it was “well known” that the expansion was going to be harder than the core game. It was well known only to the minority who followed the various pre-release announcements. Most people don’t follow the forums and don’t read press releases. I think most players would assume that the expansion was more of the same. “Hey, I like this game and now there is more of it to buy. Cool!”. So it’s hardly surprising that a bunch of players are now shocked at the difficulty level. Telling someone who has paid for the expansion that they should stick to the non-expansion stuff if they can’t cope is, frankly, absurd.

Anet have missed the sweet spot imo.

That only a minority followed the announcements is completely irrelevant. The only thing that is relevant is the fact that the information about the increase in difficulty was made openly available by Arenanet for nine months prior to launch. There is no excuse for not knowing that HoT was going to be more difficult. If you wanted to find out, you could find out.

If advertising their own expansion as more challenging than the original Guild Wars 2 is not enough.. then what is enough? If someone can’t even be bothered to inform him/herself before the purchase of a product then I guess the next step would be Arenanet starting to distribute personalized newsletters by email to make sure that each and every player gets the memo.

Catering to only one playstyle has only one direction.
Down.
Straight Down.

According to that logic the game is going down since release because it was catering to a exclusively casual/relaxed playstyle.

Now we have difficult and easy content. Two playstyles. Shouldn’t it be going up again?

@displacedTitan
The issue players have is that GW2 was advertised and designed as a casual game for over 3 years, that’s why a lot of the players started playing it. Changing the direction of where the game goes or changing the target audience would upset such players ofc.

Imagine if you bought a car advertised as a family car, you buy it to casually drive it to work, vacations, etc. Then after 3 years the manufacturer recalls your car and modifies it into a truck. You wouldn’t really like that, if you wanted a truck you would’ve bought a truck from the beginning, you just want a family car.

But HoT didn’t modify GW2. The casual Guild Wars you’re looking for didn’t vanish. It’s still out there. Go play in any of the core zones and you’ll find them as casual as ever.

Your analogy makes it look like GW2 was transformed into an entirely new game while in truth it simply added new (albeit different and less casual) zones. GW2 will need many many more expansions before the “car” becomes a “truck”.

This is exactly how I’m playing. I like my characters, enjoy refining them, travelling. If I want stress, I’ll deal with real world stuff.

I just feel like I wasted money on HoT, and am making sure ANET knows I won’t be buying any future expansions like it.

That’s your own fault. Should have informed yourself better before purchasing. The information that HoT is going to be more challenging was well known since the initial reveal back in January!

The issue with what you’re saying here is that it flies in the face of developer comments that were previously made. Yes, they stated that HoT would have “challenging content” and they specifically stated that it wasn’t the open world, and then they revealed raids and explicitly told us high level fractals and raids were the challenging content.

Additionally, Colin has previously made statements that while they (Anet) does not want “everyone to have everything” there were components of the game that they felt needed to be readily accessible to the entire player base (yes, even the most casual of casuals). It was explicitly stated that open world and story where those components; however, the way open world HoT is designed, it does not mesh these previous statements.

Granted, statements have been made (unsurprisingly, by Colin) and then reneged on before, so it’s not surprising to see it happen again. However, they really need to say something when they are going to do a complete 180 on their stance so fewer people feel jilted? slighted? lied to? However you choose to put it.

And what kind of 180 did they pull? Don’t you feel it’s a bit exaggerated to call it a 180? They said HoT is going to be more challening and that’s exactly how it turned out.

Though I admit I can sympthatize with the attitude of expecting some challening content while other stuff should remain readily accessible. But since HoT has only 4 zones I think it’s for the better that they made all of it challenging. Splitting up those 4 maps even further into easy/difficult would have been questionable. If they did let’s say 8 maps then making half of them easy and the other half difficult could have worked out. But with 4 maps? They had to make a call. And they chose difficult.

The logic is what you’re implying, not what you’re directly saying. Stop trying to wriggle out of it with technicalities. And see what Lanfear said above about the expansion as advertised.

You are putting forth an incredibly selfish viewpoint that makes no sense. Honestly, it just sounds like you’ve been playing this game bitterly for years waiting for challenging content and you’re spiteful towards casual-minded players because of it.

I believe casual players had enough content in the past three years. On top of it that very content they enjoyed so far is still out there. I think it’s a good move from Arenanet to cater towards people who want something more challenging. That is not a selfish point of view. I simply welcome the bigger variety when it comes to difficulty that is now present in the game thanks to HoT and wasn’t there prior to HoT.

Ummmm, because people PAID for the expansion and expected the game to provide more content in line with what they’ve been enjoying for 3 years?

If they expected that then they had to do it blindly. It was well known that HoT is going to be more challenging and difficult than the core game.

With the logic you’re putting forth, there is literally no reason for a casual player to have bought the expansion in the first place, which is absolute nonsense (if casual players had followed through on this logic of yours, the purchase numbers easily would have been halved, if not more). The expansion is supposed to freshen up the game and give new stuff to do, not give new stuff to do only for one caliber of player.

Some casual players don’t shy away from challenges. Casual players already had enough content for the past three years. Arenanet decided to cater to the crowd who demanded more challenging content.

An expansion is not a free content patch. Stop trying to apply the “free content patch for a particular kind of player” logic onto “paid expansion.” It doesn’t fit.

I never said anything remotely like that. I didn’t even use these descriptions you’re trying to put into my mouth.

In fact did you know, unless changed recently, you can’t even claim the guild XP buff unless you own HoT? Or how expensive it is for WvW guilds to get the buffs they used to run for keeps, towers, and camps? They did change the core. That’s my problem.

Please read the post I quoted before you’re writing something like this. You’re taking my sentence totally out of context:

Yeah, but we both know that’s a lame excuse. The discussion is about HoT content specifically, which wasn’t just a free content patch – it was an expansion.

There is no lame excuse here.

You want casual content: visit the core zones
You want something more challening: welcome to the jungle.

Both types of players are satisfied. The casuals and the ones who crave something more challenging.

I can’t deny that 90% (if not 100%) of HoT content is designed with a skilled caliber of player in mind.

Why is that a problem? There is enough content for casual players already.

Try to pace yourself when it comes to story. Don’t try to do the entire story in one day. Problem solved.

So, it went like this .. I started the Story, completed Torn From The Sky, I am not locked out from the rest of it by a Mastery gate.

Prey tell me how I progress at a sensible ‘pace’?

No, I don’t want to grind zone events for HPs, I want to play the Story, that for me is one of the largest aspects of GW .. I don’t PVP or run dungeons .. that and zone exploration, both of which are gated.

What is this ‘pace’ you refer to?

Which specific mastery gate are you locked out from after Torn From the Sky?
edit: it’s basic gliding mastery. Choose basic gliding mastery in your mastery menu and xp you’ll earn will contribute towards unlocking it. Once the bar is full you can spend 1 mastery point to earn gliding. It shouldn’t take you more than half an hour to earn the neccessary xp by doing the activities I listed below.

Doing the event chains in Verdant Brink are also part of the overarching story. There’s more to the story then just the story instances.

The pace I’m refering to is any pace that doesn’t include jumping from story instance to story instance without doing anything else.

If you find yourself at loss of what else to do you can try the following things in Verdant Brink:

- Doing one of the 5 big event-chains (In each corner of the map and the center of the map)
- Doing adventures. Try to achieve Silver.
- Doing Hero challenges
- Hunting Mastery Points

good luck!

Leveling MASTERIES is a CHORE

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Straylight.7529

Straylight.7529

I don’t mind the masteries in theory. What I mind is how poorly they executed them in regards to the flow of the story.

They are not poorly executed. They are simply not executed in a way that you can rush through the story while ignoring everything else the map(s) have to offer. The very moment you start exploring the map while doing events, HPs etc.. you won’t even notice the gating.

Before the expansion you had to employ the same playstyle that required you to do other stuff before being allowed to continue your story every 10 levels. Yet people act surprised that you can’t beeline the story in HoT when you couldn’t even do it before.

So how would you list/order Masteries in term of importance to focusing on?

1. Glider Basic
2. Updraft Use
and after that?

Definitely the Jumping Mushrooms because quite a few Adventures require you to make use of those Mushrooms if you want a chance to get gold or even silver. The first exalted Mastery is also important. It gives you access to the second story chapter in Auric Basin and at the same time opens up more events on the map by allowing you to use portals to previously unaccessible areas.

Leveling MASTERIES is a CHORE

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Straylight.7529

In my experience things only become a chore when trying to stick to a deadline you set yourself. My tip: don’t set deadlines. Just play the game and you’ll progress automatically. Choose the activities that are fun for you over those that give more xp.

It’s confusing that people call it a chore, if the content you’re doing to level masteries isn’t enjoyable, that isn’t gonna change after you max your masteries, so just don’t do it. Go back to what you were doing to enjoy the game before the expansion.

And what’s your suggestion for those of us who WANT to play the content we enjoy, the STORY but are locked out due to mastery-gates?

THAT’s when getting masteries is a HUGE CHORE.

Just try to pace the story chapters accordingly. When I started playing HoT I didn’t do all the story chapters in Verdant Brink on the first day. I did one story chapter, the next day I did events, the day after another story chapter and so on. The only time I felt “gated” was when I couldn’t enter the golden city because I needed the first exalted lore mastery. But that only took about one hour to level and since Auric Basin was still very fresh to me it didn’t really bother me.

In my experience HoT works best when you open yourself up to many different activities and alternate between them. The maps offer enough other things to do than just the story. Also you need to keep in mind that the way story chapters are designed in HoT isn’t really much different than before. In vanilla GW2 you couldn’t just rush through the story either. You got a big chunk of story every 10 levels and in between you’re supposed to explore and do other things. HoT never promised to be different in that regard.

Straylight.7529

I think the more time passes the more difficult it gets to compare an older game to its successor. Technological advances allow game developers to make far more complex content than ever before.

You need to consider that many players/fans take it for granted that a successor surpasses the original game in both quantity and quality when it comes to content. Unfortunately there’s a trade-off. Heart of Thorns clearly focuses on quality over quantity: Fewer maps/zones but far more complex and interesting than anything GW1 offered (or any contemporary MMO!). Fewer armor sets but (in my opinion) far superior in design and more customizable than anything WoW (for example) has to offer. Instead of boring fetch-quests we got fewer but more meaningful events. Now we have map-wide meta events etc etc..

If you want every aspect of the game to evolve and take it to the next level you need to be prepared to settle for less quantity. In that contex comparing raw numbers becomes more and more meaningless.

Do you regret pre-purchasing HoT?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Nice false dichotomy.

Perhaps other options exist? Anet sold the expansion as including Raids, new legendaries, etc and only announced that said would not be included at launcha fter collecting customers’ money. So perhaps people who want what they paid for are an option?

Adding raids weeks after HoT launch does not give people more time to level their masteries.

And, per your analogy, If your meal comes weeks after the appetizer you might have cause for complaint.

It’s not necessary to include raids on launch day. You wouldn’t be able to raid anyway due to lack of masteries. Waiting 3-4 weeks so people can properly prepare for the raids is totally Ok. Other MMO’s are doing it in the same fashion and no one is complaining there.

Besides there’s enough other stuff in HoT to keep you busy for the few weeks it takes until raids arrive. Do those things instead. Good luck.

The fact many players did not understand how hard HoT would be is proof of how poorly ArenaNet communicated it. Which really, is only fitting to how poorly they have talked about HoT – they began selling the game (and not even just a preorder, rather asking the full price) before even announcing a release window, much less a release date. A lot of the information they gave about the game was only made available after presale had been going on.

I’ve never before been so thoroughly informed about an MMO-expansion than HoT. There has been information on every major feature on an almost weekly basis since the announcement back in January. They even have their own show -Ready Up.

(and not even just a preorder, rather asking the full price)

This makes no sense. A preorder is a preorder. It’s one additonal option on how to purchase a game. Nothing more, nothing less. And of course it’s full price. Did you expect it to be half the price?

So yeah, if you want to say it’s the players fault for not reading something that was not up while ArenaNet was asking them to buy the game

Of course it’s the players job. I always inform myself before I make a purchase. If I find the information lacking then I don’t preorder. You act like people were forced to preorder and it’s all Arenanet’s fault for making you preorder their game. And there was plenty of information. You simply decided to omit that to suit your argument.

It’s obvious to anyone without an agenda that this is completely, unequivocally ArenaNet’s fault.

Quick, repeat with me:

  • We can’t solo everything in an MMO and we have to grind for masteries as we do map completition.
  • We can’t solo everything in an MMO and we have to grind for masteries as we do map completition.

  • We can’t solo everything in an MMO and we have to grind for masteries as we do map completition.
  • We can’t solo everything in an MMO and we have to grind for masteries as we do map completition.

Since ArenaNet already nerfed some of the grind – see the specialization unlock – and already made the game more soloable – see how some of the hero points in HoT were tonned down so champions became veterans -, I’m sure it’s only a matter of time until they listen to us and make the game even more soloable and less grindy. All we have to do is complain a bit more.

You’re not even playing the game. You don’t get to make demands.

Don’t get angry when other people are incapable of enjoying something.
Be happy you enjoy HoT.
It’s definitely preferable to not enjoying it

No matter what profession you play, you’ll not spend most of your time auto attacking.

I kind of do using Ricochet, because it does a lot of what I want it to do – multiple target damage and tags up to three targets for me. Also if it’s only two targets it hits one of them twice. Add in the boon it gives me, and that with proper traits it can start off some conditions . . .

Not every auto-attack is created equal. Sometimes it is a legitimately useful thing to let run.

But you made a conscious choice to do that. However, according to the review GW2 is designed to “have you spend most of your time auto-attacking” and that is simply not true. It is clear that the reviewer did not play GW2.

Besides, the chained auto-attacks from Guild Wars 2 are far more interesting than those of other MMO’s.

You don’t make any comment mostly because you can’t – or are you going to say that the GW2’s engine, which is basically an iteration of the 2004 engine, is not old by PC games’ standards?

Don’t change the subject. My “no comment necessary” refered to this line:
“The latest and greatest GPUs can limp along in the 30fps range in most environments even when settings are toned down.”

..which is simply wrong. No discussion needed.

I’m trying to think what’s funnier: to imagine you standing there doing absolutely nothing while your skills recharge, or someone actually trying to defend the notion that the skill without a recharge is actually the least used one.

The reviewer isn’t wrong; it sounds more like a L2P issue.

Again, this line in the review you linked is simply wrong:

“and the ability design has you spend most of your time auto-attacking while waiting patiently for the right moment to follow up with AoE, defensive abilities, and conditions.”

No matter what profession you play, you’ll not spend most of your time auto attacking.
As a necro I have 15 active abilities on my ability bar. In order to make the above statement correct I’d have to use it more than 50% of the time which is simply not the case! Checkmate.

Do you want to see something funny? Take a look at the post history of anyone in this topic. Do you really expect to see anyone attacking the review that agrees with that user’s previous point of view?

Maybe you should have a look at your own post history

Zones empty or am i unlucky?

Not anymore to be honest. The first couple of days after launch felt quite empty but now I see people almost everywhere. I’ve only been to the first two zones so I can’t comment on the other two.

Try to find a commander if you feel alone.

“Perhaps the greatest shortcoming of Heart of Thorns is its entire focus on new content rather than investing in improving the foundation of the game.”

First he makes it sound like it’s a bad thing when an expansion focuses on new content, and then he says the game didn’t improve its foundation which is just plain wrong.

“The latest and greatest GPUs can limp along in the 30fps range in most environments even when settings are toned down.”

no comment necessary.

“In-fact, most of the Heart of Thorns experience is designed to be completed in a group, which doesn’t work well given Guild Wars 2’s anti-social atmosphere.”

hilarious

“and the ability design has you spend most of your time auto-attacking while waiting patiently for the right moment to follow up with AoE, defensive abilities, and conditions.”

here he shows that he clearly didn’t play the game. I play necro and engineer and my auto-attack is easily the least used ability. (except for Ability 1 in reaper shroud).

What to do with all the Hero Points

Having too many hero points isn’t really a “problem”. I’m sure there will be more opportunities to spend hero points in future updates. Good luck.

Vague metacritic reviews and HoT feedback

Here’s feedback. Someone in another thread mentioned that HoT had a metacritic rating of 4.3.

After that the votes began to rapid swing upward so it’s safe to assume that all the contrarians read that, then got together and said, ’Let’s go over to metacritic and vote 10.0 across the board. Just to show em’.’

Yeah, totally safe to assume that.

Have you looked at those reviews? Half of them ARE VAGUE.

This counts for both: the positive and the negative ones. If you sort the scores on metacritic by date you’ll see that people tend to give HoT a better score the more time passed since release. Thus we can conclude that people who take their time reviewing/testing HoT tend to give it a better score.

But you said:

Those who took their time to test the game will realized how bad the optimization, experience gain, and how badly gated it is.

If that was true the number of negative scores on metacritic should increase the more time passes since launch. Yet the opposite is happening.

I bet half off the 10 stars reviews on Metscritic are written by Anet employees.
Yesterday the score was around 5 with almost 1 to 1 positive and negative reviews.

This tells us that the better, well-thought out reviews from people who took their time to test the game tend towards giving it a better score. Most of the 0-scores HoT received on Metacritic were given within the first 72 hours after launch.

I’ll be honest, your statement makes no sense, and is very bias. Those who took their time to test the game will realized how bad the optimization, experience gain, and how badly gated it is. Hell, I discovered all 4 of the new maps, and is unable to explore the whole area because I am sitting behind mastery walls.

Then why is the quantity of positive reviews increasing? If what you say is true, then metacritic should show an increasing number of negative reviews. Yet precisely the opposite is happening.

There were also some 10-scores within the same timeframe who can just as easily be dismissed. People who gave HoT a zero or ten within the first 72 hours after launch can not be taken seriously. Those are people who already made up their mind before launch and gave their score as soon as it became possible.

Condition of HoT

There are quite a few reviews giving the expansion a 10 that don’t even discuss the actual game, but rather try to discredit any and all criticism leveled against the it. Most of these reviewers have just one review in their history; perhaps they didn’t realize we could check that…perhaps they didn’t realize how thinly veiled their white-knighting would be when they rushed to ArenaNet’s defense.

My favorite review is this one…

“Even if ithink it need improving, not-so-smart ppl using score to get theyr way needs to stop. And this 10/10 is to help that at leats in a small way. Go ANET”

That’s one’s ironic on many several levels. Objectivity, it appears, it not required to review video games on Metacritic.

Heyy, I wanted to post something similar but you beat me to it. Oh well, I’ll just post it anyway. Enjoy:

My favorite review is this one…

“So depressing and dull one loses interest in the new ‘content’ after say 20 mins of trying to figure out which mushroom to jump on to reach the champion you cannot fight. Soulless game that forces players to play the new ‘areas’. Problem is no one wants to play there.”

That one’s so ironic on many several levels. Objectivity, it appears, it not required to review video games on Metacritic.

How to get 113 mastery points? (green ones)

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Straylight.7529

Straylight.7529

They don’t seem account bound because I got some with my warrior but they weren’t available on my necro.
However, I don’t have all the original HPs from the Tyria part. Could a Dev or someone with insight chime in here?

Do we have to have all the HPs from pre-HoT unlocked to get the Maguuma points counted; or do I have to file a bug report about my account?

Are you sure you’re not mixing up HP with Mastery points? HP’s are not account bound. Mastery points on the other hand are.
