Look I don’t understand why you guys are so defensive.

I said thieves are good at running away (low risk) compared to any other class.

Find anywhere where I said thieves are OP. You can’t (in fact I said multiple times, that thieves are NOT OP). I just said they are good at running away.

What is with you people and misreading comments?

Running away is our defensive strategy, we have to be good at it. Stealth is what we got instead of good armor defense and access to boons.

Honestly, I find eles to be one of the less versatile classes when it comes to combat. Sure, I have a mixture of damage, healing, and CC skills that other classes may not, but as an ele, I have to choose between damage or ranged capability, zerging or roaming – I don’t need to do that as, say, a d/d-staff necro.

I don’t see the problem? You just swap to D/D or staff out of combat when situation requires. And you mostly don’t have to respec for it, since most builds works pretty much with every weapon set. Just cause you cannot swap in combat as Ele, it doesn’t mean you have to stay with that particular weapon set/roll forever.

I want versatility in terms of RANGE. As an ele, if I want to duel, I don’t have any effective ranged options – however, the lack of effective ranged solo-oriented weapons wouldn’t matter nearly as much if I could just switch from staff to d/d when things got rough.
Now, of course eles shouldn’t get weapon swapping as well as attunement swapping, but I want to point out that attunement swapping doesn’t allow me to react to a given situation as effectively as weapon swapping.

(inb4 play another class, which isn’t an option because lol roleplaying)

I can see what you’re saying but weapon swapping in combat would make us too OP with our attunement swapping. I think that our weapons are designed to keep us at a range, since we can’t swap. Staff skills have slows etc. On them to help you get back to long range. Perhaps the real problem is they’re not effective enough.

You dont want to call the elemental a mage class.. so.. what class is it then ?

The class is called… Elementalist. <.< Of the scholar profession.

I don’t know why everyone is so hung up on all those words. You think that by simply calling it an elementalist or mage, it will define the class to its core and what it is and what it’s not. Just do it simple. Read the GW2’s class presentation.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/professions/elementalist/
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Elementalist

Scholars. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Scholar

Pretty much this. Stop trying to play a traditional MMO mage and instead try to play the GW2 ele and the profession may become more enjoyable.

There is no mage in this game. If you want one, play WOW. Or DND online. Or Neverwinter or Elder Scrolls when they come out.

Elemental is not a mage, and most of the problems I read about on these forums come from people not leaving their previous MMO experience and preconceptions at the door.

I love my ele despite its flaws (and it does have them).

Just for fun.. what do you call a Master elementalist as class then ??
*Warlock ??
*Wizard ??
*Sorcerer ??
*Mage ??
*Elementalist ??
note. these are all mages.

What? Your question doesn’t make sense to me.

Reading this gave me an idea to help with prof. diversity in groups. What if buffs/debuffs from combos were better than self-buffing. So the might I put on myself Isn’t as powerful as the might put on the group when I blast into a fire field. If done right, it would encourage bringing more than just warriors/mesmer, and probably encourage the use of some weapons that aren’t played often.

True. I love face rolling in single player games, but on MMORPG’s I want to win because I pressed all the right buttons at all the right times. It’s especially gratifying when I’m winning on a difficult to master class against a one-button wonder. Then you know you won because you were more skilled, not because your class won for you.

How to help new players ingame

in PvP

The best way to help a new player in this game is by telling to uninstall, leave mist and never come back, saves a lot of work/wasted time and it worked for me and many others.

Then why are you still on the forums?

Anyway, I think this is a neat idea if only because I don’t think most of any MMO’s population checks the forums.

Is New AC dying?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Teevell.1684

Teevell.1684

Well I’m new to the game, and this was my first dungeon tonight. Long story short I didn’t like it all. I come from other MMORPGs where I have always been a hardcore raider/dungeon runner, and I didn’t enjoy my experience in this dungeon at all. I am glad I came to the forums, and found this thread. After reading this thread I plan to run a few more dungeons before I decide how long I will remain playing this game.

I think this is part of the problem here, many of us come from MMORPGs where you had to run dungeons over and over again. It was how you got the gear you needed to run the next set of dungeons. But that’s not how this game works, I Don’t think we’re meant to be running AC exp 7 times a day. The sooner everyone breaks out of their old MMO habits and preconceptions, the more enjoyable this game will be.

I misunderstood how the game functions. This is not a game where any class can fill any roll, it’s a game where rolls simply do not matter. Dps, avoid, end.

I don’t know, atm dungeons no longer seem appealing. I still enjoy exploring atm, although I am already 80. I will just stick to that and see how far it takes me.

Thanks for the helpful info!

Btw, just my opinion but at the point of end game, rerolling only seems necessary if you a) want ranged dps over melee … or b) want to see a new set of abilities but still play the exact same roll, dps. Kind of takes away from the replay value, for me anyways.

The same things that make this game a breath of fresh air are the same things that make me wonder, what keeps me playing?

This is why I’m glad my first character was an elementalist, open-world PVE was already so hard for me that AC story didn’t seem all that different. I was used to dodging like a spaz.

Anywho, the “holy trinity” isn’t there, but that doesn’t mean it’s all dps and dodge either. You can go in as support, as straight up damage, or something in the middle. My mesmer focuses on interrupts and dazing, right now I’m trying out the venom-share thief, and my engineer and elementalist are mostly full-on damage but I still know where their condition clearing and healing abilities are. I think what gets most people is that the roles of being tough, offensive, or support are handled differently. Here, when my elementalist is throwing down combo fields, she’s not only doing damage, but offering support as well by giving other players in the dungeon stuff to interact with. Here support can be throwing out a heal or buffing the whole group. Being specced for things like toughness and vitality means you can help get other, less tough characters out of downed state better, something we need now that we can’t just waypoint back into a fight.

I guess another way of looking at it is saying that group support is the only role in this game: slotting skills that help everyone in the dungeon work together to complete the goal. You probably won’t using the same traits or skills in a dungeon as you would in open world, there’s four other people to think about. I know it’s hard to get out of that mindset if you’ve played other MMOs for a long time (I have too), but you’re not playing a tank, you’re playing a warrior. I don’t play ranged DPS, I play an elementalist.

Stick with it, you’ll get the hang of it. And your next go in AC story won’t be nearly as bad.

Teevell.1684

Seriously, this looks like more a paid advertisement LOL.

Oh it was great, oh it went so smooth, oh I made new friends.

The fact is, even though I still like to run AC it is immensely harder to find a group now.

No matter how many posts there are here saying how good the new AC is gw2lfg.com proves the opposite.

The decrease in LFG entries is not a demonstration of quality of the new AC, but more a demonstration of how resistant people are to change, especially a slight increase in difficulty.

More likely because it’s not easy farming anymore so they moved on to a dungeon that is.

1v1 Balancing is all that matters

in PvP

Posted by: Teevell.1684

Teevell.1684

Honestly, no matter what happens (most) people will cry about balance when they lose. It’s just the way it is. Instead of trying to figure out how it works and what to do against it, they just want it nerfed. It’s silly, but it’s just the way it is.

This is just one example, but no one in the competitive community (NA side) changed their build/comp to bring projectile reflection when everyone was saying how overpowered rangers were. I saw 2 people use projectile reflection in their build, but I believe that was just what they always used.

Seriously? Whenever I see a ranger I switch to that on my mesmer, otherwise I get pew pewed. This got brought up all the time on wow, the only way to get 1v1 balance is to make every class the same. It’s an MMorpg, you’re supposed to be playing with a group.

Can we please make dungeon waypoints (the ones at the entrance) non-contestable. I know it wouldn’t make sense with some aspects of the story, but right now on my server the quest to get into CoE is bugged…which means I can’t do CoE story on my own server. We shouldn’t be locked out of dungeons because the first part of a quest chain is bugged. Or because there aren’t enough people around to do the quest…or for any reason, really. It took me so long to finally get a group for CoE story, only to find out we couldn’t do it, which was very disappointing, and a waste of those people’s time.

Ever wonder why so many thieves

in PvP

Posted by: Teevell.1684

Teevell.1684

I figured there were so many thieves and mesmers because they’re obviously PvP classes. I mean, look at their skill descriptions, how their traits work together. Rogue classes are always excellent at PvP, and the mesmer is overflowing with dazes, stuns, reflects, and confusion skills, all of which really shine in PvP rather than PvE (not that I don’t have fun PvEing on my mesmer or thief). I would wonder what was wrong with this game if those two classes didn’t do well in PvP. Should they be unbeatable? No, but I’m not upset when I lose to one, either. It’s usually because I got caught out on my own, ankittenhus easy pickings for that thief. Actually, I had to go with a defensive build on my thief to keep from getting killed all the time when the guy I was trying to finish off called his friends over to help him. Second rule of PvP, bring a buddy.

Eles healing - not op

in PvP

Posted by: Teevell.1684

Teevell.1684

So we started the eles in beta and they were awesome but got damage nerfed. Then we stuck with our elementalists even though everyone said they were underpowered and not worth playing. Then we built defensively to stop those 1 shotters. Now we got some bug fixes and we are OP again.

Before it was QQ about theives 1 shotting you or “Running Away”. Now its QQ about eles not dieing or “Running Away”? What the, is it you just don’t like making a kill? Is that all this is about? You don’t just leave the D/D or S/D alone and kill someone else?

I run D/D 0 10 0 30 30 or 0 15 0 25 30 depending on what I feel like at the time. My traits make my defense, my zerkers or knights make my offense. My cantrips are used usually offensively and I don’t take mist form because I’m not a baby cat. If I run from you it is with RTL and that is only if a friendly is near by to assist me, otherwise I would be dead anyways.

Yeah, it seems to be go bunker or go dead. I tried a damage spec with some defense and got face rolled. If they nerf the bunker, then they had better give us some other options. And if you see an ele in the field, switch your utilities around. It’s what I do on my mesmer when I see a ranger.

The first time I did CM story was on my elementalist, early 40s, about a month after the game came out. I couldn’t believe how quickly the dungeon was over, especially after running AC story.

Did it again last month on my lvl 41 thief, got my butt kicked a few times (though still didn’t think it was terrible, it’s a dungeon, it’s supposed to be a challenge if you’re at the level). I think CM is all about group comp. and how experienced the players are. Looking forward to trying it again post-nerf to see how it goes.

Ele's do need a buff

in Elementalist

Posted by: Teevell.1684

Teevell.1684

People have to stop comparing the elementalist to the guardian, because after playing both for a bit, it’s pretty clear that the guardian needs a nerf, rather than the elementalist needing a major buff. Everything my guardian does heals her! I don’t think I used my actual healing skill until level 7, and that was because I was doing a group event on my own, something my elementalist could not have done. At the moment, guardians are built to last whereas other professions don’t have that advantage. I imagine in the future the guardian’s healing will get nerfed to bring their survivability more in line with the other professions.
So far I like both, but I have way more fun on my elementalist.

If you don't attunement swap, your doing it wrong

in Elementalist

Posted by: Teevell.1684

Teevell.1684

I don’t think that, when big class balancing changes come, that the elementalist will be brought in line with everyone else. Instead, they’ll be brought in line with us. I don’t think Anet wanted to have 1-button wonder professions. Once they fix our bugs (which will probably happen after they get done fixing bugs in dungeons, world events, etc. so that the game world is playable for every profession) and nerf the other classes a bit, the elementalist will be more fun to play for everyone.

And I hope they keep us attunement swapping because I don’t want another “Fire mage or go home” scenario. And that happened in GW1 when it first came out. Could you play as an Air elementalist? Yeah…but few people did because fire was better.

If you don’t like the class, play something you will like, because it’s play style isn’t going to be for everyone. I will never make a warrior in this game, regardless of how awesome they are at killing things, because it’s just not my play style.

Elementalist weapon swap

in Suggestions

Posted by: Teevell.1684

Teevell.1684

@Conncept
I love the stance-dance, it’s what makes elementalists unique, and I hope we don’t lose it. Of course our abilities won’t do as much damage as the other classes because we get access to more skills per weapon. Of course we need bugs fixed and some other classes could use a bit of a nerf it sounds like. What it sounds like you really want is a trait-line fix. And you’re probably right about us needing one.

But people aren’t children because they don’t want the mechanics of the profession to change. If you don’t like playing a profession the way it was designed to be played (even if it isn’t working right at the moment) then that probably isn’t your playstyle and you should try a profession that is. The Elementalist is supposed to be using all of their elements, not just one or two. If we were supposed to be picking an element to specialize in, it would have been clearly built that way, like it was when GW 1 originally came out and everyone specced fire (or whatever the element of the month was).

How to teach a young elementalist?

in Elementalist

Teevell.1684

I really like S/D (lvl 30 at the moment) actually. They have to learn to swap between elements, it’s our bread and butter. And try to do as many group events as possible, because ele’s can contribute a lot in that area and get protection from others at the same time.

Elementalists' weaknesses

in Elementalist

Posted by: Teevell.1684

Teevell.1684

Clearly Elementalist is not the class for you then. Good thing there are seven others to choose from.

I think a lot of the disappointment with Elementalists stems from people trying to fit the class into their preferred style of play, rather than adjusting their style of play to the class. They’re not WoW mages. And at this stage of the game everything will need tweaks, it’s only been out for a little over a month now.

Tarnished Coast

I'm trying REALLY hard to stick with this class.

in Elementalist

Posted by: Teevell.1684

Teevell.1684

The reason we probably haven’t seen a buff yet is because the game has only been out for little over a month now. You can’t expect all the problems of a large scale MMO to be fixed that fast. The devs might be giving it time to see how all of the classes fail over the long run once more people have level 80s, have done more dungeon runs, etc. We might not even get a buff if the other classes get a nerf or other aspects of the game change.

Tarnished Coast

Having problems playing other classes after Ele.

in Elementalist

Posted by: Teevell.1684

Teevell.1684

This discussion has made me realize why I love my elementalist. In WoW I played an affliction warlock, and that was a complicated class that needed skill just to be on the same level as the other classes. Some people do like professions that require a bit more work. Honestly, I have a harder time killing stuff with my thief than my elementalist. Love changing between elements, having to dodge and outwit whatever it is I’m killing. And there have been plenty of times where I was so busy pressing buttons that I didn’t notice I’d killed the four things that were attacking me (because all that dodging means I ran into other stuff, ya know?)

I don’t think elementalists need to be buffed, but perhaps some other classes are a bit on the powerful side. Also, for some people having problems with this class, it really might just be the play style that’s holding you back. I’m terrible at most melee classes, even if they’re supposed to be faceroll. Just some thoughts.
