“Pay-to-win” has become a buzzword for any perceived injustice where paying players gain access to content which is not immediately accessible to non-paying players.

It doesn’t even matter if the content provides a competitive advantage. So long as it’s desirable and exclusive it will be labeled “pay-to-win” and judged accordingly.

Still, it baffles me how someone could consider an expansion “pay-to-win” content. I’ve always considered expansions to be different games entirely.

MMORPG expansions are not pay-to-win. The game was updated. That update was called Heart of Thorns. If you don’t want to play the updated, current version of the game, that’s up to you.

PPT is a total failure it is one of the reasons WvW has been in pretty much permanent decline, it is supposed to be a mass scale PvP mode with “massive battles”, yet PPT and “winning” largely involves avoiding battles, PvDoor, running away and playing off-peak when others are not.

And also one of the major reasons WvW is even viable as a mass scale PvP mode.

If you want to know what WvW would be without PPT, look at desert border. That’s your “mass scale PvP mode” future. People dont generally just appear out of thin air and play against you because reasons. The heart of WvW is objectives. Objectives focus players and brings the PvP. Objectives that players want to fight around. They have to have a reason to be there. When we loose the will to fight around these objectives… Well. See previously mentioned desert border.

PPT is flawed sure but calling it a total failure is like taking a dump on 3 years of WvW, PvP and all. I object to that.

This. WvW is massive battles, but those battles are supposed to be to secure objectives. The problem is, other than the PvE passives you get, there is no reward to gaining PPT and “winning” WvW that week.

That’s just NcSoft blowing smoke up ur…. The only metric NcSoft cares about is how to increase cash flow and milk this puppy to death. If they could figure out a way to get rid of everything except LA and still get your hard earned cash they would do it. Guess that’s what we get for buying a game from a company based out Korea. Hell they been trying to do hostile take overs of the larger gaming companies forever. Fortunately we still have a handful of US gaming companies that understand the old saying “A Happy customer is a paying Customer”. Long-live US gaming companies they’re our only hope.

Which is why I don’t understand all the people in these forums saying they’re going to Blade and Soul. Another NCSoft game. Look at the track record of NCSoft games, I doubt I will ever touch another one.

The reason behind Blade and Soul being so popular in the west is probably the fact that the game is gorgeous with amazing gameplay. Also, it is an already established game where NcSoft (west) can’t kitten up. The content is already there, they just need to port it over here. Team Bloodlust are the devs of BnS, owned by NcSoft.

I looked at NCSoft’s page when I saw Blade and Soul. I saw two of their other games were Aion and Wildstar. Couple that with how GW2 is being handled (they have input in it, even if they’re not doing most of the work) I can’t believe that pretty graphics are going to be enough to make that game good. I wish you guys luck, but I won’t be trying it.

It has been stated that they are, and it makes sense that they do.

It shouln’t affect it, otherwise it would be too easy to abuse.

DC’s don’t happen that often, when it does you just have to suck it up.

There’s not a single competitive game that has a system against dc, and it’s because there can’t be one that wouldn’t be abused easily.

You shouldn’t force people/lure people who don’t want to PvP into a PvP zone. If someone expresses no interest in PvP, then we shouldn’t be making adjustments to WvW to try and get them in there.

And with the way WvW is right now, it’s hard to keep actual WvW players in there, let alone draw more people in. If Anet makes WvW fun and rewarding again, players will come. And rewards don’t have to just be tangible goodies like gold (though that does need an increase in WvW). PvPers can feel rewarded by successfully defending against superior numbers, making a great play that wins them a map, a difficult duel with a fellow roamer you ran into while scouting. If you can make these activities more fun and enjoyable, make them feel like you’re actually accomplishing something, that will help bring back PvPers, too.

The game is and has always been buy 2 play. If you want to play the current version of the game, you have to buy it.

The problem is Anet wants people to still be able to play with their friends while simultaneously creating a competitive pvp environment. So they kept everyone together in sPvP because they put “play with your friends” first. It’s the same reason ambers can queue with legendaries.

So 40 days to finish elite spec, if this is intentional than their whole team is clueless. Been in mmorgp games for 15 years and this is far worst expansion ever created in whole mmo history.

Try re-reading that. 1600 JUST from the chests. So if you’re doing WvW a lot, you would get the badges needed well before then.

It is still not fair to those players that were not that active in wvw before HoT. Also in comparison to pve, wvw is very slow on getting the elite spec, which is obtainable in pve within a day.

I wasn’t very active in sPvP before HoT, so I don’t have a high rank or lots of the currency. That’s not unfair to me, it’s what happens when you don’t play a particular game mode. I wasn’t very active in dungeons before either, I’m not whining that it’s unfair I don’t have a lot of dungeon currency. Of course I don’t, I didn’t do them. If you want the stuff from the content, you have to play the content.

What actually isn’t fair is the discrepancy in ease between the game modes when it comes to leveling elite specs.

Okay, I want them to balance the game more, too. But the people who designed gemstore items are not going to be the same people who work on game balance. I doubt they even have the same skillsets. Now, you could suppose that Anet gives one group more budget than the other, but to say that the people designing gemstore items should instead be working on balancing is silly. And would probably make the game worse.

But for reals, we need more frequent balancing for PvP.

That human can’t even hold the sword when it’s got that much magic power in it, she has to levitate it just to get it to work. My Asura, on the other hand, can easily wield a sword bigger than them and throw a purple lazer beam up to 1200 feet away with it.

I have scouted so much in previous years, and maintained said upgrades. It’s a pain in the kittens to have to worry about it. People (That I know, which is a significant portion of my server :P) want to get out there and play, they don’t want to sit around babysitting upgrades. Leave that for the system to do. This is a game, not a job. Waiting around and watching the upgrades is a job.

I get what you’re saying, but I don’t agree. When I would start upgrading a keep (tower, whatever) we just flipped, and “babysit” it, it became MY keep. So when the enemy came knocking, it became even more important to me to defend it, because I’d worked so hard on it. Like, that’s MY keep, and the enemy can try to pry it from my cold, dead fingers. I scouted for my keep, I made sure the camps stayed flipped for my keep, and it kept me involved with what the other players on the server were doing because sometimes I needed to call them in to help me defend my keep. I know that I’m on one of the more populated servers and that’s not everyone’s experience, and I can see how that change might be better for less populated servers, but I do miss being the one to initiate upgrades.

I’ve been hanging out in EotM lately to level my mesmer. It’s a shame the map isn’t really good for actual WvW, because I do like it. And while we’ve gotten some fights, you can tell most of the people there aren’t really PvPers. What’s even worse is when I’m running in the 30 man zerg and we wipe a group of 5-10 and someone goes “so ez”…like, it actually makes me want to log off.

Reaper is elite spec, so you have to own HoT to use it at all.

And it’s good to level to level to 80 on a new class, so that way you actually learn how to play it, especially since you’ve been gone for a bit. Or you can just do sPvP where if you own HoT the elite spec will be unlocked, but you might have a hard time there at first if you’ve never played a necro before.

Well if anet really wants us to play the class we want to spec/gear, why are tomes of knowledge around? You can completely ignore the whole vanilla game by using these. At least give these proofs a bit more things to spend em on. I know you can buy superior siege but hey buy some normal siege and books throw them in MF and you wont need proofs.

Just another useless currency.

For the same reason other MMOs sell level ups/level-grinding gear. Because when your game has been around for 3+ years, the veteran players aren’t going to want to level-grind yet another toon to 80. The tomes are for the vets who already know the basics of the game, and just want to create a new character/class.

Not a frequent flyer on the forum, but I have to say: “Be Careful What You Wish For” I was on IOJ. I saw how demoralizing playing vs higher servers for months can be. It accomplished one thing: Guilds transferred only adding to the population imbalances of servers.

Another thing I’ve been thinking on, is they should have seasons that are maybe 3 months long (or however long would actually work best). During that season, you can’t switch “servers”. Let’s be honest, the only place server matters anymore is WvW, and there is far less server pride now because of the megaserver everywhere else. So let’s replace servers with teams/factions. So, at the beginning of a season, you choose which faction/team you will fight for (for example, my current server is TC, so I would start by fighting for the TC team and before the season starts I could switch teams if I wanted). For that season, you can’t switch. Once the season is over, you can switch to a different team.

Just a thought I’ve been having.

I always wondered what would happen if servers were regarded as teams, and they did match-ups like MOBAs/other sports do things. So, every server would end up fighting all the other servers at least twice or so, and at the end of the season/year, whoever won the most is top of the ladder, etc.

It would need some tweaking to better accommodate WvW, but it might be worth a try.

I think the only way to deal with nightcapping is to change the scoring system completely.

No need at all.

Just scale all PPT based on total population on a 30m or 1h update basis. Its simple and fair. It doesnt take into account any timezones, if its in prime time or middle of the night, if its a T1 or T9 server or how the server balance is. Only the idea that population of WvW at this point in time is currently low so all PPT is worth 33% (or whatever value step you want to set compared to medium and high).

Since server PPT gains remain the same relative to each other, it doesnt diminish the efforts of someone during low poulation times compared to someone during high poulation times. In fact, its now equal and fair as opposed to the current score that value nightcapping and holding keeps against no one waaaaaaay to high compared to primetime clusterkittens.

This would probably be the best and easier fix for the problem. If you’re capping stuff, but no one from the other teams are currently on the map to stop you, the keeps shouldn’t be ticking for the full amount. Points should be relative to populations. At the very least Anet should try it before we get this “big wvw” change, to see if it helps at all. Like, wvw is broke, so let’s use it to test new ideas for this revamp, so maybe when they bring out this wvw change, it’ll actually be good.

Unfortunately, the Pro Leagues are for marketing. The company has actually said this. They don’t exist because Anet cares about a true competitive PvP competition, they exist to try and market the game. I think that right there is a really big part of the problem.

I play another game where every time a patch comes out, there’s a feedback form posted on reddit (with a little message in the game to go there, there’s no mail in this game so don’t have that option) for players to leave their ideas. And this company also would periodically post the w/l percentages of certain characters (it’s a MOBA) so the player base could see the data the dev team uses. The side benefit is that people could then point to data and say “yeah, this character actually has a 50% w/l rate, guess it really isn’t as OP as I think”. It really seemed to help, I wish more companies would do things like this.

Wow, your attitude is something else considering your server got out of T2 when a bunch of T1 guilds decided they wanted different server matchups.

Most servers in the lower tiers struggle due to population imbalances, because of people switching servers 4 times or so to find “better” (higher ranked) ones. The megaserver in PvE did not help this situation.

I love Tarnished Coast. But if the health of the game means we have to evolve from servers to something else, fine. And there is probably a way to maintain the communities we’ve created while moving beyond the servers, we just have to hope Anet finds that way.

I have server loyalty too (TC since day 1), but the megaserver is already here. Most of the OP’s post talks about going into LA and rallying for help. You can’t DO that anymore, the rest of PvE (and WvWvW seems to be considered an extension of PvE) is a megaserver now.

They’re not going to go back to servers again for PvE. We need to move forward. The only problem now is finding the right fix, and so far I don’t think we’ve seen it proposed by Anet (or anyone).

My opinion is they should do 9-ish alliances (total, for both NA and EU). Everyone can choose which alliance they want to belong to (so entire server communities can put out the word that they’re all going to try and go to one place if they want to stay together), and after that you can pay a modest (not the high price we have now) to change alliances if you want later. NA and EU would be part of the same alliances, so you would have people earning points all day long for their alliance, instead of the night-time imbalance we have now.

Whatever they decide to do, I hope they take the time to really think it through, so that WvW doesn’t end up even more broke than it is now.

People are already legendary, if you’re good enough you will get there.

What about the people that are good enough but do not have the time?

Achieving legendary shouldn’t be restricted by your time, at least not as heavily as it is now.

The new system leaves many defenders and their small guilds outside with their noses pressed against the window. It is not an uplifting experience.

And those of us who are guildless aren’t even able to reach the window, it seems. I don’t really play enough to warrant joining a hardcore WvW guild, but before I felt like I could still contribute despite being a guildless roamer. I could run dolyaks and supplies, I could help flip camps, etc.

This entire expansion seems to be trying to push people into guilds to do anything. It’s okay for now, but if the trend continues, it could create a very insulated game community, and it could drive away some new players in the future, since they won’t know anyone yet.

Just because it isn’t fun for you doesn’t mean it won’t be fun for someone else. Again, if you want the legendary, this is what you’ll have to do. Everyone will just have to decide if the requirements are worth the prize.

“It’s subjective so it’s justified” isn’t a good argument, though. Anet was very clear at laying out their goals, so if their decisions contradict those, it’s worth calling their attention for that.

Yes, the game should incentivate players to try multi-classing so they can become even better at pvp, but the choice should be ultimately theirs, and never by sheer “either you’ll do it or you’ll be punished with less rewards” enforcement.

AP hunters and “I really want that legendary and that’s the last achievement I need” players will ruin matchmaking.

You’re the one who brought up “fun”.

And it’s a LEGENDARY. They’ve been in this game for years, and they have always required people to participate in pretty much every aspect of this game. If you want a legendary, but say, you refuse to complete the world map…then you’re not getting a legendary unless you decide to buy it off the TP. If you don’t want to put forth the effort required to get it, then you’ll just have to make peace with not having one. If you really want it, then you’ll just have to play at least two classes. Maybe, instead of posting here, you should be grinding some matches instead.

If the effort isn’t worth the prize for you, then I guess you won’t be getting this. I already know it’s not worth it for me, but I’m not going to demand it become easier to acquire just because I don’t feel like putting forth the effort.

But no one is asking for it to be easier to acquire.

I could very well take my 2-3 alts, which I have some pvp experience with, and just do it. Would that make the legendary any harder for me? No. But it would make it incredibly less fun, because I don’t like to play with those characters, which are secondary for a reason, and I wouldn’t especially enjoy using them in “serious”/ less-relaxing pvp.

As far as MMO, it’s buy to play the PvE portion. However with the Free 2 Play pvp options, you are competitive at the beginning. They broke that with the expansion. It meant that a F2P player and a B2P player were equal in PvP only. That stopped with HoT.

You can debate the MMO potion but with the new push for eSports and trying to get competitive against the likes of DOTA, LOL, and other esports games they now have a different ownership/play model than any of the esport games on the market. They should have stuck with either b2P or f2p and not mixed on the eSport side. That’s the problem they are facing from f2p players and people who bought the game originally who are now in the same boat as f2p players.

No, it isn’t B2P the PvE stuff, it’s B2P the entire game. There isn’t GW2 PvE, and then GW2 PvP edition. It’s all one game. MMOs aren’t designed for people who only want to PvP, that’s probably why MOBAs came into prominence like they did. I know I left MMOs for MOBAs because I wanted more/better PvP.

As for esports, you can’t compare this game to LoL/DOTA really, they’re not the same genre. That’s like comparing LoL to CSGO. Yes, they both have a professional scene, but there are different expectations for that scene for each game. And esports is a related but really different topic from this.

They have stuck with b2p, their business model hasn’t really changed. People are getting confused now because you can play the older stuff for free. But it’s like any free trial, once you hit the cap, you gotta buy the new stuff to keep going. But because GW2 isn’t designed like other MMOs, the cap isn’t a particular level and it’s not as clear-cut as other MMO free trials.

The elite specs won’t be buyable with gold. If you want HoT content, you have to buy HoT. If you can’t deal with that, time to try a new game. There’s a bunch of new PvP oriented games coming out/already out right now, many of which are truly F2P. Have at it. I’d list my favorites, but I think that’d get this deleted.

GW2 used to be Buy to Play but then they announced Free to Play. While we all agree that Free to Play is basically a demo of the entire game, its PvP component has always been very good at making it easy to start playing at a competitive level as others. The only issue prior to HoT was skill based.

Hearthstone, DOTA2, LOL, all don’t have subs however you can use in game rewards to purchase updates or you can use cash. For example, Hearthstone has had 3 expansions which you can use in game currency to purchase. While you will have to grind a bit for the expansion cards, it’s available to you.

Now if we look at First Person Shooters, those are Buy to Play. Unless we are talking about Team Fortress 2 which is currently free. Most first person shooters don’t have a free and buy component. I think the issue is that when ANET allowed a F2P component, they now created two classes of gamers where one group has less than the other. People who bought GW2 originally are also in that class.

So the point is this, if you want a game to be buy to play, keep it buy to play. If you want it to be Free to play, then make sure that the PvP options of it (or eSports version) is the same for all players otherwise the PvP component becomes buy to win which is what has happened.

And it still is B2P.

You picked some poor examples in your second paragraph. Hearthstone is agreed by most to be P2W, as most card games are. LoL and DOTA2 are both F2P. You never have to invest money in either of those games to be competitive, though LoL comes with more of a time component than DOTA2. I can’t speak to the FPS games, I don’t play them.

GW2, however, is buy to play. I think allowing people to play a limited version of the core game for free is confusing people. They don’t want this game to be F2P, and it isn’t. It’s B2P. If you want to play the most up-to-date version of the game, you have to buy their expansion. Just like with pretty much any other MMO out there.

The biggest problem with these new elites is that 4 utilities and one ultimate are locked behind that trait. If they weren’t, then there would definitely be more builds out there without the elite trait line. You would want 4 more utilities and the ultimate even if you have to sacrifice something from another trait line, and you’re not sacrificing much. That’s the problem! By using the elite trait line, you lose almost nothing but gain 4 utilities and an ultimate to pick from.

To fix this, remove some utilities when you pick the elite trait line or make those elite utilities available without trait restriction. This will make other trait lines just as good as the elite.

Another way to fix this is to release more elites to counter balance the current elite. The regular trait lines will be phased into minor trait lines with elites determining everything. I think this is what the GW2 staff planned to do and we’re just at the point where we’ve too few elites to make this work and it’ll take a while before new elites will be released.

I agree that this is probably a big reason why elite specs seem mandatory. They don’t come with just the usual traits, but a bunch of utilities and weapon skills are locked in there, too. So of course everyone is speccing them, they have to to access those weapons and utilities/elites. But if they were separated, I know I wouldn’t be speccing as many elite trait lines as I am now.

They complained about fullness when that metric took into account all those actually on the server, not just those who played WvW, which is the only thing servers are really for now.

People aren’t complaining that servers aren’t full, they’re worried about what that means-a serious decline in WvW participation.

Here’s what I can gather from it.

Everyone and their mum loses it if warrior and thief aren’t represented at all. Even though we’ve spent nearly 3 years where one has nearly always had a place on every team and the other has flip flopped between stack to the roof, mandatory or token cleanse/heal bot.

Here’s hoping the next big balance patch shakes it up and we see these two classes back, maybe guard and ele can take a time out from being meta?

Or you know, we could have a “balanced” meta where every single class has one or more viable builds for all levels of play.

It’s no fun when 1 or 2 classes suck eggs and the rest are either overpowered or in a good spot.

That’s the dream, but it’s very very hard to accomplish. Successful esports like LoL, etc. don’t have that kind of balance. There will always be some champ/class out of the meta or on the bottom of it. It’s not as big of a problem in LoL because there are soooo many characters. There are only 9 classes in GW, though, which makes the gap more apparent.

Not saying there isn’t more Anet could do, balance-wise, but there will always be the classes considered the best for the meta, and the one or two that will lag behind and see little to no play at all until the meta shifts.

We need less shouting and more calm, nuanced analysis. Less protesting and more willingness to try adjusting and report what things are difficult to swallow.

Getting ignored for 3 years is going to wear at anyone’s patience. It’s not that surprising that people aren’t being calm.

Edit: And as others have suggested, a much better protest would be to just not log into WvW anymore. If enough people stop playing the game mode, that is much more likely to get their attention.

Something needed to be done about the visibility, as one of my things that really annoyed me about this game is it was so hard to see what was going on. Everything just turns into one big shiny clutter on the ground. I have no idea what I’m standing in half the time, if it’s friendly or not, etc.

But, I don’t think this was the answer. Yes, the special effects needed to be toned down, but there is still that blending problem. They need to better define the edges of the abilities, so that if someone puts a necro well, a mesmer well, a DH trap, and a fire field all in the same area, I can see them.

I just tested my mesmer wells, and the edge of the effect disappears before the spell is over. I actually can’t tell how big the well is before it’s cast time ends. That’s just silly.

I wish Anet would release any data they have about win rates (or content completion rates for PvE) by class. I play another game where the devs do this, and it really helps with threads like these. For instance, people will start complaining such-and-such is OP, then that month’s data is released and shows that it’s not nearly as OP as we thought.

SPvP always had that one thing going on for it, which is no grind or paying required to be on an equal footing with everyone else. This already got slightly removed when they introduced plain better sigil which must be unlocked with gold.

Well, except you did have to pay for the game itself. That’s what has happened here. The game is now HoT, that is the current version of GW2, and everyone who bought it is on equal footing.

I do get what you’re saying, and I don’t think Anet communicates very well (as in, their communications to the public are often confusing, poorly worded, lacking detail, etc.). And it seems as if they don’t believe that there are people who don’t ever want to play their PvE (despite them launching their entire franchise with separate PvE and PvP game modes).

And yeah, it stings that those who only play PvP have to shell out 50.00 for the current version of the game. But at the same time, why should PvP players get access to something for free, that people in other game modes have to pay for? The way that this game is designed, this was going to be an issue no matter what.

What really needs to happen is more balancing to buff some of the weaker trait lines and nerf some others (not just the elite ones, either). But 1 month is not enough time to make sweeping game changes like that, and I doubt the meta has really settled yet.

It doesn’t matter anymore that you had to buy the game to gain access in the first place. It now is a F2P game. New players can download and start playing the game without buying anything. If they try PvP and see that there is absolutely no option for them to be on the same level as someone that payed money they will leave again.

It’s not F2P though, it is and always has been B2P (buy to play). If you want to play the most current version of GW2, you have to buy it. Not having a subscription doesn’t make a game free to play. Arenanet failed to communicate their business model properly to the players, as well as many other communication failures. It’s no wonder people are upset.

If sPvP is all you do, what exactly else is there for you to spend the money on besides cosmetics? It’s not that surprising that they would introduce a gold sink into a game mode that basically does nothing but make money.

I don’t like that they locked sigils and stuff behind a pay wall either, because the whole point of sPvP is that everyone is on equal footing, but there should be a gold sink somewhere. Would have been better to put it on sPvP exclusive skins though, or something like that.

Skyhammer is about position awareness.
If I am bumped or feared out of a platform, it is because I’ve let myself in the position to being feared off or bumped.

I don’t like this map because so many people have no clue about what to do with it, but I do like how strategic positionning is on it and how it makes environmental awareness a very important part of gameplay.

Positioning is so important to PvP, and yet so many PvP players don’t want to be bothered with it.

Isn’t that supposed to be a problem? So two people are co-ordinating their skills to get a kill. I think that’s exactly how team-based PvP is supposed to work. Like…this game even has a combo system, we’re supposed to be doing things like this.

…but people aren’t dying while knocked/feared/pulled into Ranger or Thief traps, which means DH traps are OP compared to those.

That’s not really the same conversation, though. Also, I wouldn’t expect these traps to all be equal, because the entire kits between these 3 classes are not the same. It would be bad to try and balance all traps as if they existed separately from the rest of the class’ kit.
