Who would win a tournament of every meta this game has had? There’s been a lot of changes to gw2 on all classes, I’m just curious what would be the ultimate meta in the prime of their classes.

Some examples of each class are…

Warrior – Hambow, Axe/Sword Longbow, Shoutbow
Necro- Condition/Power
Thief- SD/ DP(panic)/ DP(crit)
Ranger- Power/Traps/Spirits/Sustain condi
Guardian- Bunker/Meditiation
Elementalist- Fresh air/DD
Engineer- Condition/Celestial/Turrets
Mesmer- Shatter

There’s been some known comps that have won major tournaments and I’m very interested in the opinions on which one was the strongest and would win a tournament of overall comps.

You forgot about these builds: ranger beast master, mesmer tanky/dps phantasm, thief d/d insta kill, war a/s + gs burst down and vampiric necro.

In game VOIP/VoiceChat a good idea?

in PvP

Posted by: The Primary.6371

The Primary.6371

I’m against this because:

1) development resources are limited and I don’t want them spent reinventing a tool that already exists. especially given how many other things in game need work.

2) while voice communication can be superior, it is only as good as the people using it. in my experience from other games w/ voip pug voice communication is about as good as pug text chat communication (it sucks). and its far more intrusive.

3) of course people will insist that everyone in the group join because the tool exists, then refuse to use text chat while jabbering inanely about nothing i want to hear. and if I mute the intrusive jabberer, then I cant hear them on the rare occasion they do say something useful.

4) voip is a great tool; voip is not for pugs.

[edit: and this is assuming all the technical issues are dealt with; in other games I’ve seen in-game voip cause disconnects and massive lagspikes. anet’s record of dealing with technical problems has not impressed me.]

Necros have a lot of good condition removal skills. The difference is necros have very little trait support for condition clear, but way more than any other class through skills. Besides CC and the weapon skills you have well of power, and plague signet which are both decent skills. Being the masters of condition’s is less about removing them and more about corruption, and transfers then max removal per second.

Although necros could use more options for condition manipulation through traits. An example is unholy martyr which could be changed to be an effect on tainted shackles that transfers conditions from allies to enemies on pulse or something similar. You could also change shrouded removal to transmute a condition on entering ds. Overall though, necros have plenty of skills that can be taken for condition removal. At least we aren’t shatter mesmers that have none at all.

lol mender’s purity and shattered conditions, conflagration trait on torch, null field. Or hell, mantra of resolve.

You’re gonna argue they kitten the build in some ways but the same applies for a power necromancer who needs to use a staff that is virtually useless besides 2 skills as 3/5 skills are strictly condition related, and the offhand dagger is the same. Well of Power is a 50 sec cd, come on.

Necromancer has the same problem as ranger, a bunch of its weapons are hybrid weapons in a game that encourages stat stacking for effectiveness, basically turning those hybrid weapons into kitten weapons compared to classes like warrior and guardian and elementalist and engineer who have weapons whose weaponskills all are dedicated to the theme of the weapon instead of a hybrid setup.

Yet necro don’t work with celestial armour, weapons and accessories.

We have no traits or barely any in the correct trait lines (or utilizing the right attributes to increase another attribute e.g. Death into Life) that prompt a particular attribute (e.g. condi) damage to be boosted to a useful amount (e.g. 750 condi damage to 1000 condi damage).

Elementalists have class traits that provide this (e.g. Strength of Stone) but can’t or won’t take advantage of it because of their own disadvantages which would require some sort of sacrifice within their specs.

How come gw2 is not popular in esports?

in PvP

Posted by: The Primary.6371

The Primary.6371

It isn’t Esports because Anet doesn’t want it to be

Plain and simple.

What Esport games have:
1v1/2v2/3v3 gamemodes
Large map selections
In-game ladder system
In-game Tournament system
In-game Tutorial videos displaying class mechanics and/or map mechanics.
Saving and viewing replays
Switchable equipment/trait templates (add a 5m cd..)

Stronghold should have came out years ago along with 2v2/3v3 modes but this game only had a fixed budget. They chose to spend their resources on PvE rather than focus on PvP. Obviously PvE was the smarter choice.

There’s a large PvP player base Anet have yet to tap into. It’s easy to implement an immersive PvE environment but even harder to deliver a competitive pvp experience. Currently there’s very few pvp items here that cater to these players. The heart if it being Leaderboards and Gamemodes.

Lies… anet had the full on goal to make conquest “esports” from the get go. In the end though we all knew that it would fail (if you didn’t your a foolish cookie).

The Primary.6371

I haven’t had a single good hot join match in ummm… at least a year. I don’t play it often because of this.

I think the solution is easy: don’t allow players to join a match until someone else clicks join. The only exception would be if teams are uneven you’d be instantly placed on the team down by one member. This also would stop you from joining specific teams. Save the farming free for alls for custom arenas. Yes, this makes it hard to instantly join a match (which is the appeal of hot join), but it prevents people from hopping onto teams just to farm.

Hot join is not enjoyable for most people and is yet another reason why most people are put off by pvp.

Another would be to have the teams formed before the match starts. Either instantly by RNG means or well if I typed player choice that would be a bad idea.

Immobilize what kills me. so useless gm trait for me as a power necro.

I need mobility and survivability. or immobilize break more useful imo.

Flash Death Shroud (Stun break + stab) into Staff 4, Consume Conditions or Dagger 4 and your target is immobed and you have stability. Unless you’re seriously being trained, that should be more than enough to save you. If you really are being that trained, it’s either high level PvP and you should have wurm or you walked yourself into a 3v1 xD. I think it’s really only not good because you have to give up Death Perception on Power Necro.

But that isn’t unique to necro. The games balance is very balanced. What the games “balance” lacks is fun. That is why despite putting real money on the line anet are getting less and less people signing up for all these tournaments. People are bored and frustrating mechanics aren’t nerfed. There is no fun aspect to the way they balance, they are obsessed with their failed esports project.

I have a feeling the expansion will fix a lot of that.

WHY should a power necromancer rely on a condition/support weapon, the staff, to deal with conditions instead of any of his power weapons? Don’t you think it’s a problem axe has been this bad for so long, a measly 600 range weapon as your only power based weapon with pathetic autoattack damage, little aoe, and ghastly claws just being a much weaker rapid fire or volley.

The only condi clear a necromancer has is tied to condition weapons and a single easily interrupted long cast time heal.

It’s kinda silly how much more easily an elementalist or engineer or warrior or even guardian manipulates conditions off himself than the supposed master of conditions.

It’s a sad joke, but champions of the necro class seem to be drinking in the anet Kool-Aid.

Power Necro is in the meta, so obviously they wouldn’t give it another buff (directly after buffing it to its current spot), whereas Condi Necro is falling out so it gets a buff. Seems completely logical to me. Also the FitG change couldn’t have been made before stability was made significantly weaker.

It was pathetic even before the stability change. Too far into the soul reaping line for such a low duration anti control affect.

It was a good change. It didn’t fix every issue in the world obviously, but ANet addressed a long-existing and recently exacerbated issue in a timely manner with a really good change. Overall I’m happy with it.

Anyone try this with a power necro?

It doesn’t work well. Loss of 50% crit chance is just way too much, power necro already can run into issues dealing the same damage as other power builds (barring Lich Form) you can’t just give up such a massive damage multiplier.

Would have been a welcome sight within the condition meta but…. this is the power meta for necro.

Seems like entire companies can be just as lazy/cbfed as one individual if it was say a month late. The only problem is the fact that it’s either a year or two years late.

The Primary.6371

This lack of fore sight causes alot of people to die to turret engineers. And many people cant accept that the turret engineer had the advantage simply becuase there victim didnt properly engage the engineer in question. This can cause people to see them as over powered. Simply because they entered a fight with the deck stacked against them and expected it to go well.

That’s very true. However, don’t you think the build is incredibly strong in 1v1, even at the best levels of play? The advice you only get on the forums is “avoid them”, and that makes sense. But you have to understand that for a lot of players, it’s not fun to have a build that’s so good in 1v1 with so little effort.

No, because it’s easy to kill that kind of engineer using e.g. constant condition overload, stream of direct damage that is pretty much constant pressure or both.

Then again I know how to kill it since I have an engineer and have every other class too….

But this is not something we really wanted to know…there are far more important things in HoT players are interested in. And the last weeks blog posts were really bad and time buying in my opinion…dissapointing even.

It’s funny how anet portrays it as such a milestone. In reality, they actually took a step back with the living world deal as said character never used it’s voice.

Anet then fixed it by stepping forward again to land right where they started by giving back character storyline speech within HoT.

i speak as a decent pvp player, go and fight a top player. i fought caed with a pal and it completely changed my perspective on tournaments. those 1v1s were like going back to being a noob again. caed is a beast, and the fact that all of the players are at a similar level, in that they can beat and survive caed.

most people come to these forums and call builds faceroll, cele engi and ele especially. sure, they are faceroll if you are facing scrubs- but not if you are facing good players (nothing, apart from maybe phantasam mesmer is faceroll vs good players). all the qq about passive mechanics and blaming of game systems hardly make any of you look good at all. y’all are probably those scrub thieves i squash on a daily basis.

In spvp, killing is an optional objective. While the primary objective is circle control.

But in the end conquest will always be a dumbed down version of alliance battles from guild wars 1.

It’s actually more like a dumbed down version of hero battles from gw1, just with players instead of heroes.
It still requires more strategy than alliance battles, but less than hero battles.

But as you stated HB had 4 other npcs instead of players. Hence why more lean towards ab even though it had a couple differences.

Still within AB you needed good communication and had it with the system in place within gw1. This in turn meant you also needed coordination and strategy with more than just 5 people.

But both HB and AB required more than just one person on point to gain the full 4 pipe point capture. I wonder what if it was implemented in gw2 conquest.

Both HB and AB also required the team member/members to work out the team build composition. Very different to what is within gw2 conquest with roles / attributes set in stone such as roamers, point defenders, simply not worrying about skill interruption being impactful and having less build variety.

Concluding though, gw2 conquest is a joke compared to guild wars 1 guild vs guild and well any of the other pvp modes except for RA.

Latency is bad and getting worse

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: The Primary.6371

The Primary.6371

The issue really isn’t latency, unless it is latency secondary to the servers getting thrashed and unable to respond effectively. Even in the 120ms range, the game should be pretty fluid and most definitely playable if the servers are responding correctly and have the resources to handle the load.

The stability patch is where the problem began, I am guessing either it was bad code (or good code that is doing too much due to poor design) or resources were redirected elsewhere.

The truth is, it is making the game unplayable in any circumstance where there are a lot of players on screen at the same time fighting (even PvE). Seems like around 40-50 people doing something at the same time and the game goes to crap.

I created this post because this is more a server resource issue than actual network latency…. https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Game-Breaking-issue-WvW-Unplayable/first#post4947547

This is not just happening in wvw, this is occurring in pvp in terms of the actual 5v5 matches and in the mists itself. It also is happening in pve e.g. within the small 5 man dungeons.

Having a point in time where your character does nothing then having afterwards a catch-up period is very detrimental in those clutch moments.

The only thing the same between GW1 and GW2 is that they share ‘Guild Wars’ in the name.

^^^ this

gw2 was aimed at the sensitive casual playerbase hence why we are drifting from action vs reaction to straight passive play. If the devs actually pay attention to feedback ( extremely questionable) they are flooded with players with the mindset that if their class effortlessly beats all other classes then its balanced, HOWEVER if 1 class beats them well then that class is op and needs a nerf.

gw1 we had the ability to make many diverse builds setting up combos as well as had the risk that if your opponent interrupted your combo then you were in trouble. in gw2 your pigeonholed into a few builds and oh you interrupted my skill 3, but that doesnt stop me from using 1,2,4,5 followed by 3 a second later.

End result: We watch these tournys were the shoutcasters scream HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE as two meat tanks play ring around the rosie for several minutes until one player finally succumbs after making repeated multiple mistakes…..

You would have the necro nerfed into a tree if you had your way.

But you should be prepping for Revenants instead of wasting what brain cells you still have left.

Things were different a year ago – Ele was literally bottom tier, even moreso than Necro was and is (not joking at all) – the meta was different and Necromancer was next to Hambow the best noob-killer that existed…
… Granted, the whole “Focus Necromancer” was already a thing…

However, in a year people have become vastly better, the meta changed and thus I am willing to accept that my thoughts about the matchup with Ele vs the World is changed that much, that Fresh Air Eles complaining about their weak sustain makes them look like tools – after all, for all the things you can choose, they chose to be a glass cannon who is not on par with any of the established Zerk-builds in the game (Think Thief, Mesmer and Medi Guardian), so I find the complaints to be a bit redundant… Especially considering Necro only has and has always had 2 “viable” options within SPvP…

And nah, I am of course going to play Revenant, but I am not jumping the hype train unlike many others… I just like variety – but my heart is where the Revenant borrowed it’s existance from

Lol you misunderstood clearly, it was implied that you should be prepping to complain and cry for “nerfs” towards the revenant….

Thread like these… make me laugh

An ele complaining about another profession doing to much instant damage… So funny!!! Even worse, he say he play fresh air which mean he can do even more instant damage. This is clearly a L2P issue of some random newby.

A year ago (pre April 15th) I would’ve probably argued in favour of the Fresh Air Eles since that was their only viable spec – however, the tables have turned…

Only Power (burst) and Condi (burst) are viable, and both have a ton of sustain issues… Power somewhat less than Condi though imho, but that is aside the point;
It is not weird that these specs lack sustain, and actually, they should as both specs do not trait into defensive lines anyway…
However, neither is this an option the Necromancer class has, whereas an Elementalist can choose to be either one of the best team support builds within PvP, or nearly the quickest burst possible – either way, it is your choice…
Support is then not even limited to D/D, as Staff also works in certain comps, and do not even stop mentioning D/F which is a great party utility to have if you got a second D/D for the support in boons and burst healing…

… Hence why I wanted to refrain myself from posting on that thread… It is not worth discussing imho, and you should just let those who think Necro is overpowered ramble on…

Hi guys,

So recently we have seen the change to stability boon, and to me, this is a change on a very huge scale of the game, something we haven’t seen for a while. This hopefully will shake up the meta a little bit as we see more play of CC skills to remove stacks of stability (before, people have to wait out the stability or use any boon removal skills) and more frequent use of buffed up transform elite skills.

So in the light of this huge change, I’d like to redefine a role of mesmer in terms of group support by utilizing what we do best: BOONRIP.

So introducing THE EQUALIZER build.

Build concept: This is a group support build that is based entirely on the fun concept of “deny enemies of their boon advantage and ensure our allies free from condition disadvantage”, in other words, keep us allies and them enemies somewhat on even ground, hence the name “Equalizer”.

Build link

To be continued…

Seems like the “core” theme expressed here is “redundancy”.

Dealing damage as a Mesmer, and I mean effectively, is like playing Poker and on every single hand you’re going “All in”. You’ve got to stack all your chips up and shove em forward just to be able to do anything and compete with what the other classes are going to bring. Every trait, every weapon, ever gear choice has to be stacked in the right direction or you’re going to lose everything. Skill and playstyle have to go into the pot too. It’s absurd just how much Mesmer requires just to function on a basic level when it comes to competing in a fight.

That said you’re putting your life on the line every time you engage or you’re not at all. The money goes into the pot and if you did it right you’ll walk away with everything. If you don’t you’ve already lost it all.

In the end my feelings are that this build will support a little, but without that damage will be dead in the water. I’d hate to see a thief coming my way xD

You clearly never utilized a “poker face”.

Ventari? seriously? a legend? he only found a seed, we saw him like 2 times in the first game and he was not this important…

Anet never described or showed him as a warrior, you only saw him as a seeker of peace.

Would be a good idea though to showcase each legend in their time as what they once were in short trailer clips.

The Blink nerf is hard :o

It’s really, really hard :/

Lost a lot of my fav, very important blink locations in WvW.

there’s should be no more doubts about ANet’s disdain for Mesmer class.

All those cheerleaders about how HOT expansion will make Mesmers better again need to stop drinking the kool aid.

I.. I think I just got called a cheerleader. AND a cultist.

In all seriousness.. The port nerf sounds like it sucks tho. My computer is crashed so I can’t play till mid April anyways. =[

You weren’t called a cultist, you implied that yourself.

Honestly when the expansion was announced it didn’t get me as hyped up as I thought it would. A lot of the content here in HoT is content I felt like should have already been in the game or at least in by now. What took so long? One new region? I’f I remember right GW 1 expansions would have multiple regions, and no new races or something that really grabs new players or return playrs attention aside from the revenant and specializations.

Anet require ncsoft permission and funding. They must work within those constraints, but they never had these issues when gw1 expansions were being rolled out.

Skill Bar - Balance Preview w/Karl on RU 8.8 @ Noon PDT

in Profession Balance

The Primary.6371

Hey everybody,

Once again, the Skill Bar will air on Ready Up tomorrow at noon PDT (1900 UTC).

Tomorrow’s segment will cover the thief and warrior professions. For your feedback, please feel free to open a new thread (for each profession previewed) in the profession balance subforum after the preview and I’ll make sure the balance team knows where to find it.

The Skill Bar segment is a prerecorded balance preview. Each segment will cover 2 professions and Karl will talk about the changes as they are demonstrated. We decided to prerecord these segments because it allows us to cut down each profession from over 15 minutes to about 5 while still allowing us to show off the changes without making you wait for Karl to make build changes on the fly.

Dulfy gw2 + google ftw……

Thief - What Direction is this Class Taking?

in PvP

The Primary.6371

First of all, I’d like to make it clear that this is sort of a QQ post about my choice of weapon set getting the nerf bat – I’ve played a D/P thief ever since the Dancing Dagger + Cloak and Dagger nerf (and after getting rekt by a hipster thief called Caed Aeterna who made me see the capabilities of what D/P could do). A QQ post as this may be, I’m not complaining about the rather unfair nerf to BP field 5. It’s something thieves will adapt to, no problem. Rather, with the post I wish to highlight the balance philosophy that drives ANet to make certain decisions, and hopefully get a reply from them with an explanation behind what they did and why they did it because I can’t make any sense of it.

About a year and a half ago, thieves used to live up to their “high burst/spike, squishy class” philosophy. We weren’t a class that could hold a point or assault one on our own. We aimed at getting around the map fast, using ports to get to high ground to scout positions and +1 fights to turn team fights in our favour. The way this was countered in high level team play is by calling out a thief’s position and being aware of where the thief was at all times. Mesmers used to be just as squishy back then as they are now, and in fact were primarily taken as close point holders, and thieves were a problem but nothing completely unmanageable because good teams could communicate where the thief was and have something like a valkyrie elementalist sit on him during the game to peel for their own squishes.
Then came S/D, and everything changed. Thieves were now assaulting far point, a la Jumper, and could still get out alive from 1v2s and 1v3s. Thief was no longer a “high spike, get in – get out” kind of class, but rather a team fighter that could camp mesmers and elementalists without taking any counter pressure and disregarding all sorts of positioning and such. As a result, we started shifting towards a bunker-ish meta that made the game unfun for everyone, thieves and bunkers alike. After months of the thief class running rampant with quite literally a broken spec, ANet decides it’s time to tone it down. But how is this managed? Not by sticking to the class philosophy of thief being a high burst class, but rather making it a class that could do sustain damage and still remain slippery as hell. The problem in question, imo, was always the sword #2 skill. However, with this latest patch, the thing ANet decides to nerf about the S/D thief is their on demand burst. Now this is something I simply cannot understand. Sure it “might” offer little more counter play for other classes, but as long as thieves know they can go ham and still have a way of escaping unscathed, that’s what they will do. You can still use your infiltrator return to LoS or move back to your team after you’ve unloaded all your damage onto someone or evade non-stop all the way back just to bait out enemy CDs, and this is something that really needs to be addressed. The new changes do not stop the sword thief from being the apex predator of everything that is berserker.
Now onto the D/P change that personally affects me. The blind field for pistol offhand was invaluable for securing stomps, and gave the thief his only chance of beating certain melee specs – warriors, beast master rangers, necromancers, thieves. Why was this changed? The blind field is definitely not a problem in team fights and by nerfing the utility of the only thief spec that remains true to the “land burst or die” philosophy, you’re indirectly encouraging thieves to follow the S/D path. Is this this the direction you want the thief class to take? No longer burst, but a safe class that can still put out a lot of pressure on anything that’s squishy? Anyway, the point isn’t that the nerf made D/P unplayable. Certain specs I went toe to toe with might now be even more challenging or unbeatable after this nerf, but we’ll get better and adapt. The rant is about the fact that the game is slowly moving away from the high risk, high reward play style that I personally enjoyed and still not addressing the little risk, high reward gameplay that it created for thief more than a year ago.

Sorry about my english. It’s a rather long post and english is not my native language.

Also, since these are my personal opinions on a somewhat controversial topic and there are bound to be disagreements, please refrain from overindulgence of emotions in your replies, especially if they are directed towards me.

Thieves are becoming the perfect troll class…….evade spam ftw I guess…..
