Profession Balance Goals - Necromancer

… I’m mainly interested in what they will do with base shroud. What would they need to add to base shroud to finally encourage most of us to cast off the elite spec? …

My wishlist:

  • Life Blast changed to work like Fireball.
  • Dark Path becoming ground targeted RtL or something along the line.
  • Some additional effect for Doom.

By the way… I don’t see why Parasitic Contagion shouldn’t (partly) work in Shroud.

stabs my heart Be still, the last time you got this excited we had Blighter’s Boon nerfed.

Say wuuut!

I would be…if the bolts ever HIT ANYTHING! I’m more worried about what they AREN’T telling us though.

I am excited because this is one stop to actually get healed through shroud by outside factors, like others players.

That my friend will never happen. You see what happened to Blighter’s Boon when’s the relied on allies? Now it’s only usable if you take spite. Id say our own self heaps they’ll be fine with but outside interaction other than boons is a no no.

Then again I could be wrong, and in that case I’ll be happy to eat the bigger slice of humble pie you have to offer.

The Desert Borderland would be much better with gliding as well, imo. It is a mess to navigate through on foot currently. Except they should let WvW players unlock WvW gliding through the WvW mastery point system (if they ever plan on adding it to the desert BLs).

At least no more dying to fall damage in central Tyria because you’re used to gliding I guess.

I do think it’d be funny to imagine like an air raid from the top of a structure onto attackers below, or retreating and jumping off a cliff to see gliders unfurl as the enemy tries to blast them down with CC and other attacks. If put into WvW it could open up a lot of things….or break them.

Dungeons - Nerfed & Destroyed

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

TheLastNobody.8319

You stated it yourself pretty much, dungeons weren’t being run for fun or their specific I dungeon loot, they were mainly being run for their gold rewards. In addition, fractals are easier to update and customize by their disconected nature, while dungeon paths wind around each other and sometimes overlap. A change in one path can affect the rest.

Fractals and raids have their own built in gold sinks, fractals have infusions and salvage kits which costs one gold to use, dungeons have nothing. As for your comment on getting materials, you’ll need to start doing and looking for map events across tyria. I’m not big on their loot changes myself, it feels like their draining the gold dam and trying to cause a drought in gold, or deflate the value of gold. Unfortunately during this time it causes the markets to fluctuate wildly.

What they are wanting to do is try and pull people out of their farming spots and have them actually start playing and doing things in game and across multiple zones instead of just farming Orr, dungeons, even the HoT maps, they don’t want you to farm one spot they want you to farm the whole of tyria. So get walking.

What the hell has happened to the PVP in this game? I’m an old player who has just returned and the introduction of the elite specs has completely messed up my beloved pvp… the hell…

Guardians are insta killing with TRAPS! Now I’ve seen everything… And Necromancers are just some devil spawn of pure aggravation to fight now.

Meanwhile warrior is complete kittene as always…

Can someone explain to me how current PVP is balanced?

You know that one episode of South Park where stan’s dad buys a margaritaville after the economic collapse and goes on a magical journey and in the end the government decides his margaritaville is valued at a billion dollars based on where the body of a headless chicken landed on a board…

I think it’s like that. One the bright side, necros are a threat! Yay!

What happened to dungeons?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: TheLastNobody.8319

TheLastNobody.8319

Was there a reason they nerfed the rewards?

Their economist literally said it was to disincentive people from doing dungeons. In other words, they don’t want people doing dungeons as much.

More that they didn’t want people earning coin as easily and that they wanted to encourage people towards raids and fractals.

Also seems like dungeons were the biggest source of liquid gold in the economy. Raids and fractals now also have their own built in gold sinks between ascended salvaging and gearing for raids.

From what I’ve gathered it operates on a percentage basis for damage and heals5% damage every second and the heal is 25% of your health back with a seven second cooldown.

The key is timing that first heal right at 25# health, so around 5 seconds. Then just spam it. Alclarity also works and no, regeneration and food effects, as well as all healing are nullified after you eat the bacon.

Remains to be seen whether HoT has failed. I simultaneously hope that it has and that it has not. I don’t want to see more of this kind of content design but I do want robust development to continue.

Honestly I’m just not even sure anymore what I think. I loved original HoT difficulty but they seem to keep nerfing stuff back and making it easier and easier and I’m currently taking a break because of it. I’m not even sure if GW2 is the right game for me right now as I enjoy a difficulty curve in my games were I’m gradually taught new tactics and ways to fight. The open world of GW doesn’t do that and so its more like a stair step with open world, dungeons, fractals, raids. Add in the pace they balance things and it’s just….idk. I want to like GW2 but I’m just going to have to wait to see where they take HoT.

As long as the OP admits the mistakes he makes and learns from them, and doesn’t start going haywire if he looses by two or three points, eh, can’t say I don’t agree with the guy.

What are exactly GOOD rewards in this game? Another weapon skin? Oh, wait! Another helmet? Yeah, right! Say – LEGENDARY. Sounds sweet and stuff… even though it is same kitten as ascended gear with silly look and no option to change it. =)

So basicly people tell that there are enigmatic casuals in STILL casual game (and poorly balanced btw) that feel entitled for a bunch of pixels. I smell fetish envy here… /gloat

PS
There was several times a situation on wyverns when 90% of participants fall flat on their faces. And I ran and ressed them with my so unconvenient (not a single meta) acrobat thief build. REALLY hope they were ALL bad casuals. You can’t really imagine how HARD I really hope you were right in this matter (and not games poor design to look “harsh” fro noobz). God kittening kitten it! Everytime I hear "GW2 and “esports” in the same sentence, it just makes me literally cringe. If they truly wanted o be ESpirts material, they wouldn’t have hosted a tournament for….what was it, 200k? Right after the Balance Bomb that was HoT. Hell they never managed to get the balance right for anything yet in PvE or PvP, even WvW mechanical balance (defense vs attacking). And most of their balance changes aren’t even worth the wait time. And Colin I think even said the whole esports thing is for marketing, well hell, that’s even worse. Advertising GW2 PvP as Esports is like advertising a Papa Johns as a 5 star gourmet Italian restaurant.

There was a time GW2 was Casual Friendly

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: TheLastNobody.8319

TheLastNobody.8319

As a self proclaimed casual player (very few achievements, erratic schedule, hardly any farming done), this is what I believe is the issue:

Over three years in Tyria, people fell into a farming pattern that was easy, efficient and fast. You pretty much needed gold to get anything you wanted, and farming it happened at “on demand” content such as dungeons. So people got all their shinies essentially by having no roadblocks whatsoever. Open world content is also (with some exceptions) extremely easy, even things like Orr. As a result the zerker-meta appeared, where you stacked attack attributes, stacked on each other, pressed 1111 and won while half asleep. And they could no-life it for as much as they wanted, and 2 days later they’d have their reward.

Fast forward to HoT and finally people are starting to see some resistance. They need to play the actual game content to get rewards, tied to specific currencies. More things are now account bound, meaning you have to earn them instead of converting gems or farming 1 specific place (CoF1) for gold and buying them outright, hence all the complaints about “time-gates” and “grinds”. People are actually complaining they aren’t done with the content 1-2 months into the expansion, so they can get back to their familiar farming patterns (which ironically many of them are now defunkt, hence even more cries for “ruining my favorite content”).
The content is harder, so you actually have to think about your build, or (god forbid!) your defenses and survival. And people look at the rewards at the end, and they feel compelled to get them no matter what. Newsflash: If you feel that way, you are probably less casual than you think.

To be honest, I love it. Going into a map and having to adapt to the environment, makes me feel like I am in a living world, instead of a themepark. HoT is the right direction towards building a persistant world, instead of a series of activities in a carnival. The carnival is still there (old world), but now we have something other than sheer tedium and mindless famring. But in the new content, the world is moving in its own pace and it’s your option to join in on not (i.e. timed metas). Could they have done a better job in providing variety? Sure, but this is a decent start.

If nothing else, HoT is the most Anet-like content they’ve produced in years. Their motto was all about a “living world”, right? Well, we got it.

+10000. This I agree with so much.

It’s not that hard if you played any other game that involves you using your head. But compared to core tyria, the mobs actually being something you have to worry about instead of just a slight speed bump is nice, plus the fact you can’t really solo everything. The mobs seem easier and squishier than before though, admittedly. Though that might just be me, but I remember having to use 2-3 gravediggers to kill a sniper at half health at the start, but now it just takes 1 and maybe an auto.

Also, when did you do your complete toon, recently? Because several hero points have been nerfed in VB, possibly auric basin but I haven’t checked.

You sure seem to know a lot about good game design, I’d love to hear how you would create genuinely challenging open-world content with the systems of GW2 that is also accessible to enough people that it’s worth the tremendous effort of making it. Oh by the way, you only have like 20 developers for your brand new amazing content team, and the deadline is in 9 months, so good luck!

Or you can just keep fluffing your own egos by belittling people who don’t have the same skills and/or interests as you. You definitely look really smart and talented.

Sorry we don’t really enjoy dragging our knuckles across the keyboard. we were just hoping HoT would be what the advertised for PvE. Now was Chak garent a bit hard, yeah, in comparison to the amount of time you need to do the pre events to the actual thing happening. That was what made it frustrating, also it is the only way to realiably get crystals.

But hey, no worries, keep on crusading and pretty soon you guys will have this game back to tyria level of difficulty. Cause who wants to actually think?

Going forward, GW2 needs to abbandon this “challenging group content” kitten and “e-sport pvp ladder” system and just focus on what MADE GW2 special.

Its a game, people can play at their own leisure for fun, with nothing overly complicated about that at all.

Because screw the players who actually want the game to be interesting and challenging, am I right!!!! Even now most of the game is extremely easy. Dungeons are easy, Low level fractals are easy, Core Tyria is easy. Heart of Thorns is more challenging for the average players, but much of it’s content is still relatively easy and completable with PuGs. The most significant ascended gear is trinkets/rings/amulets which are EASY to get. Ranked PvP, legendary weapons, ascended armor/weapons, coordinated groups, etc. ARE NOT REQUIRED to play almost all of GW2. Stop being so selfish and realize that the hardcore players want something to do as well.

Good luck convincing them, I really don’t get why people don’t want SOME tougher open world content. there needs to be a curve/hill that lets people progress into the tougher content like dungeons, fractals, and raids if they want to. Right now it’s just a wall leading into each thing. And plus making everything easy means that things will require more and more mats to keep everyone from having legendary gear.

An ele I think is great for a human or sylvari lore and asthetics wise, gameplay wise, ele is one of the best classes for support with their abundance of combo fields and blasts. You can make your ele very colorful and incorporate all the elements into your design as we’l I think.

Necromancer….well depends on your style. My necromancer is a fanatical devotee of Grenth, so I am human with a Grenth hood and using all shadow weapons, except for dark harvest, because I love that greatsword. You could also do a sort of Raven inspired norn, those look amazing when done right, a mad scientist asura, sylvari….I have seen some good ones but it’s hard to give them s theme other than dark. Gameplay wise, necros can take a lot of punishment, but are very very selfish, lacking blasts and combo fields people want. They also lack in the boon department. Except for might. They are masters of conditions though, able to literally eat and having the most transfers in the game I think.

It funds the game
Makes my characters look pretty and others too
Offers convenience items
Is vastly superior to some mmo online stores
Takes almost nothing away from the game development since it is a separate team

The main criticisms I have, is that we need more earnable skins in game and the balance is skewed. But since the teams on each have separate and dfferent workloads, i can understand that issue arising. I also find the pricing to be too high. As a retailer i can see that there are greater opportunities to be had from a better pricing system and removing rng from things like dye packs.

Is the gem store a problem? No, quite the opposite

I agree, but I hate how getting the skins are soooo dependent on the RNG gods with the black lion chests. It would just be great if there was a way to earn said skins in game or at least get tickets.

Elite specs were supposed to be an alternate way of playing the professions, not stronger, nor weaker.

Not really. Elite specs were there to make players buy the HoT expansion. And so they had to offer something better than the current specs. Remember this is a business after all.

Thought this was a balancing topic? Also, they stated it was gonna be alternate not stronger.

Eh the problem is some of the alternatives go against the classes orginal weaknesses. The reason DD and Berserker aren’t really picked is because they both didn’t really do anything to provide said alternative playstyle, try just slightly reinforced the classes strengths but didn’t cover any of their weaknesses. Thieves are still squishy and can’t really stay on point that much, and warriors who rely a lot on passive effects for their defenses, received nothing in regards to that.

A middle ground needs to be reached among all professions and specs, but even then the problem with conquest is who can stay on point and survive the longest, so unless something changes with that, bunkers and tanks will always be the preferred builds of choice.

All HoT maps are horrible until you have been in them for an hour or two. But do remember, this is true for most maps in the game, the verticality just adds a bit more difficulty. VB is one of my favorite maps, but ti does start out as a major pain figureing it out. Just because its not instantly easy to you doe snot make it a bad map. Learn and adapt.

Auric Basin is probably my single most favorite map.

TD from a conceptual standpoint is definitely an interesting map, the problem where it falls flat is that it does what it does well. That is to be a tangled, confusing nightmare of mazes and mobs. It does that exceptionally well, which means, technically the map has succeeded. that does not stop me from hating it with a fiery passion of a thousand sons and hoping the designer OD’s on his obviously powerful drugs. Congrats Dev on an amazing map, I appreciate you from a design and imagination standpoint, and hate you from all other standpoints.

It’s like you’ve taken my thoughts and put them into words! From a guy that DESPISED mapping, dredgehaunt with the fiery passion of a thousand burning suns, tangled depths is like a black hole to my enjoyment.

I don’t have much PvP experience at all, only did it to get the inquest leggings. When fighting on point it does well, that #4 is amazing, but the problem is you have no way to drag or pull people in range reliable since the 5 is so buggy. And you have to hope your enemies defenses are down or they screw up royally to land the big damaging/game changer attacks like GSaa chain and gravedigger. It can really shine in a teamfights on point but that’s only if you’re not focused down.

You can make it work I think just, why bother is the question. I still love it though and being the stubborn mule I am, will probably keep taking it…if I ever decide to get back into the hot mess that is PvP in this game. -_-

Posted by: TheLastNobody.8319

TheLastNobody.8319

They won’t, according to John Smith, the dungeons were disincentived due to the fact they are no longer supported content and fractals easier to design, plus dungeons became so face roll it was injecting too much gold into the economy. Shifting the rewards to fractals will create a better gold sink as you’ll need the gold to buy the ascended salvage kits. Thus fractals become both a faucet and gold sink in and of themselves something dungeons never were or ever will be.

Plus this will allow them to say their metrics show dungeons really are unpopular and unneeded content.

I created one of every class and leveled each to 20. Then, every time I sat down, I just let my instinct of the moment decide which I’d play. At first I hopped around a lot, no clear winners, but now they stand something like this:

  • Necromancer: 52
  • Guardian: 47
  • Warrior: 22
  • Engineer: 22
  • Ranger: 21
  • Thief: 20
  • Elementalist: 20
  • Mesmer: 20

(No HoT yet.)

Clearly I’m a newb, but I don’t understand this thing about Necromancers not feeling mobile. All my characters are female charr, so there’s no variation in mobility from race. Banshee’s Wail alone gives near-permanent Swiftness uptime. If you don’t like that, Quickening Thirst gives permanent 25%. If not that, Signet of the Locust gives permanent 25%.

All of those require zero effort. Isn’t that part of feeling mobile? Effortlessness? For me, anyway. I’d much rather be running around a zone with a Necromancer than with most classes because I don’t have to be casting and running through walls, or flipping my character and jumping backwards and flipping again, or constantly aiming teleport circles. I can think about the game. Of course, that’s from the perspective of a newb.

Otherwise. I’m not sure why, I’m just riding my instincts, but I think I play Necro most because of its huge variety. Condi MM or Power Wells…they have almost nothing in common. And if you don’t like Wells there are Signets! And if you don’t like minions there are Corruptions! Most other classes seem more dependent on a few key abilities.

When most people think mobility, they think teleports, leaps, and dashes, which is something necro lacks a lot of, reaper has one dash and we have two teleports, flesh wurm which has a long cast time and can be destroyed, and spectral walk which requires us having to move.

She’s probably my fav character in the group too, also I enjoy kasmeer, not majorly though, she is a blight to all necromancers.

The only thing I didn’t like about taimi was her running off in LS2 with the machine…then again the way my character handled the situation I was also not happy with, I don’t trust most asura, especially flunt or whatever his name was….

Geesus this system seems more frustrating and screwed up than halo 3’s ranking system.

GW2 an E-Sport? Yay or Nay?

Nay, definitely nay. it’s been three years, and they still haven’t hit that balance sweet spot, not for lack of trying, but trying to balance a game for both PvE and PvP is just near impossible. Add in the fact the elite specs are like dropping a boulder into a pond and it’s going to be a long long while. I wish them the best of luck, but I just don’t see it happening.

If this was an armor where I could mix and match the parts, I’d buy it in an instant. Being an outfit….no….can’t work with it

I find the outrage on dev silence a little curious. I’ve been a gamer for years, but hardly gave a second thought to the ‘men behind the curtain’, and certainly never expected them to check in with the players in any meaningful way. I suppose interacting with the community is the new standard, now that technology permits it.

The main thing people want is for them to acknowledge or explain their reasoning behind buffs and nerfs, which they rarely do, and most of all, justify nerfs disguised as bug fixes like what’s been happening with Druid lately.

The big reason I think they prefer Reddit for discussion is the bigger base and the fact people can down vote negativity.

I’m also one of those people who enjoyed the dialogue we had before HoT, but now we see hardly any red posts about profession balance or fixing core specializations, and feel a bit salty over that.
