Looking at its kit and what some people could do over the weekend, it seems strong but, PvP wise, I’m still sorta unconvinced with what it can do. Still has the problem core necro has with being CC’d to death.
PvE…maybe some viability, I’m still a bit unconvinced. Barriers just don’t seem like that strong of a group defensive mechanic.
Oh look, criticism typed out into a nice well organized post instead of a rambling incoherent mess.
I like dis.
Mained a necromancer, was gonna come back and try out scrouge, but then the balance patch hit and saw we still have the same problems we’ve always had, in addition to what they did with the soul reaping line.
Engine spec looks interesting, might toy with it in the beta, same with renegade. Others I’m not so interested in.
Why do I have the horrible feeling they’ll use the same reasoning they did for Vital Persistence to “buff” power reaper?
For me it’s a matter of tankiness and how easy to get back my Shroud is after coming out. Didn’t do much PvP but VP was my go to in WvW except when I made a glass Shroud thief hunter build that utilized the spectral trait. Same with PvE. Every kitten percentage point counts because we don’t have defensive tools to deal with things like other classes have (blocks, invul, etc.). Blind is useless in the PvE setting since all bosses are immune to it.
Then i look at the loss of plagueform and the change to epidemic and necro doesn’t even feel like a shadow of its former self anymore.
This is just kitten. Absolute kitten. I saw nothing in the patch notes to justify taking away vital persistence. Seems like Anet are doing their kitten edest to take away any and all of our tanking options.
First the Plague change now this. And we still don’t have reliable stabulity, protection, or other defensive tools on base necro.
Didn’t Deathly Chill originally just make Chill do damage on its own and it didn’t connect with Bleeding? What was wrong with that exactly?
It did around the same damage as old burn did, people hated it because with how much chill reaper put out, they were constantly taking a good chunk of damage now matter what, in addition to longer cooldowns and reduced speed.
On the PvE side, if people are their chill overridden by another reaper or player, they’d loose they damage.
I believe it was reduced to one stack again though.
So, useless basically… kitten
It’s anet, gotta make the previous kitten useless so they can get people to justify buying the xpac.
Like I’d rather be forced to drink molten metal….this is either going to be a completely underpowered elite spec as thief has such high mobility and stealth access, they’ll make the damage kitten poor, or as others have said, a long range killshot that you can’t see coming.
Ugh I’m getting invisible halo sniper flashbacks all over again, only with them you could see an outline at least.
Back when I used to play, I loved my necro to death, no other class made me feel as strong or powerful, even before reaper.
Mask of grenth
Priory vestments
Pants from crucible of eternity
Path of Koran for boots
Arah gloves.
….I sometimes really miss playing this game.
1. Time gates. I really don’t mind grinding out stuff as long as I’m having fun doing it and feel like I’m making reasonable progress. Problem with Timegates though is that just impedes my progress and tries to make me spend more on high tier mats with the trading post.
2. The seesaw balancing act and by extension, the lack of balance.
Ahhh, good old ANET! Sidestepping core balance issues as always I see!
Heart of Thorns Killed My Interest in GW2
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Wasn’t really HoT that killed my interest, but just all the time gated bullkitten that I started running into when I wanted to advance (and the dungeon gold nerf which they have since reverted). Ascended, legendaries, the HoT maps themselves, just got tired of being told to play when anet wanted me to, and not being allowed to play and advance when I wanted to.
Edit: also hasn’t helped that ever guild I’ve been in has dissolved a couple a weeks of getting a bunch of members. All my friends are gone.
(edited by TheLastNobody.8319)
All the professions need a total rework and ovehall. Anet has done this see saw balancing act for so long that we constantly go from one end of the spectrum to the other and it’s just tiresome. It’s bad for PvP and PvE.
BURN IT ALL DOWN! Redo the professions from the bottom up.
….played with old friends, ran dungeons, badly at first but I got better over time. Just mained my engi and necro, Condi builds of course and this was at the time when condis had a max cap of 25.
Ran guild missions, had parties in hoelbrak and lions arch. Ran around as a small 4 man squad taking towers and camps in WvW, watching Pvp matches between em, help friends cedar their first legendaries, even if it cost me all my kitten mats it was just great seein them so happy.
They’re all gone now though….sniff
Moa morph should never have been in the game. It makes SPvP look like a circus.
It is a circus.
Necro’s design, as it currently stands, simply does not fit into the game. ‘Attrition’ from having a higher healthpool is laughable when there is enough burst damage (both power and condi) in the game to go through that healthpool in seconds regardless. This is a major design flaw that in my eyes as of now largely kills viability, as it is not even closely compensated in terms of utility / dps that necros can provide.
Don’t forget that in this game, all the other classes have ways they can run off and disengage, and the game will just restore their health to full.
I find it odd how necromancer lacks ways to pull or force enemies into combat when they otherwise would not want to be.
Get rid of it, too much Timegated bullcrap in this game already.
Without going into details I know for a fact that long-term this is better for the economy.
Can I borrow your crystal ball? I need to check the lottery numbers for next week
this is just ridiculous….WHY?! Are they this desperate for sales revenue?! Is there some change in the future they are going to do to make these skins more accessible? This warrants an explanation.
Thanks for the feedback and suggestions, all. We’ll likely be looking at redesigning the trait entirely – maybe reincorporating some of its original functionality/direction.
There is a God!
So I….it’s working as intended but the tooltip is just wrong? How the hell is this thing even a GM? At this point it should just be a minor trait at most! Give it a 1 second ICD and it would still be worthless.
I believe the trait functionality changed back when Embrace the Darkness changed. I agree that it’s lackluster – hence why I’m here. There’s a number of decent suggestions in the thread. I’ll bring them to the team and see what we come up with.
….WELP I feel like an kitten now.

Man reading that trait description takes me back, using mallyx to absorb all my party’s conditions, copying them all back, getting stronger and feeling more terrifying the more conditions I had on me…..great now I’m sad.
Never had any trouble playing revenant until they increased costs for phase traversal. Feeling kinda clumsy ever since, not to mention good mesmers and thieves would kite me 24/7 on WvW. Before that “nerf” I’d just get to them with phase traversal and if I do it now I’ll end up with only autoattacks and dodges available. And good players will know that.
yeah i stopped playing rev after that
I stopped playing the game completely. Feelsgoodman.
Same, really enjoying some of the games on my backlog. How is smite doing BtW? I haven’t played since the end of the beta.
I think they should just give rev access to all legends at all times, similar to elementalist attunements. Still think it’s funny how the thief still has a similar energy management design.
I think all legends at once would be a little overwhelming, especially considering we would still want to keep weapon swapping, but it would be interesting to see Rev balanced around using 3 legends. It would take a lot more balancing for Anet, but the way I see it, we’re slowly losing everything the Rev had going for it at release: No cooldowns, energy management, reaction based skills. Right now it feels like I’m just popping cooldowns and and autoattacking until either they’re off cd or I’m dead.
Revs just need a new dynamic very badly right now, for both class balance and for it to actually be interesting to play, personally it feels like somehow Rev has become more unfinished then it was at release.
Honestly I don’t think it’d be op of rev got access to all 4 legends at once. Simply because each legend has different strengths and weaknesses for situations. We’re not like other classes in that we can’t mix and match our utilities, we’re locked in to whatever legend we’re channeling at the time, so people will always know what to expect and how to react to it.

Precursor crafting should have been a much slower but much cheaper way to get a precursor (requiring very little in gold or mats that could be turned into gold), making a nice dichotomy with buying one off the TP, which is expensive but instantaneous.
Anet, who as always only care about the robber barons and their play economy, kitten out a massive gold and mat sink that technically delivers what they promised in a way literally no one wanted.
And that’s without getting into the really dumb stuff, like requiring ascended mats to make an exotic weapon, or the fact that Anet used the price on the TP as a basis for how many mats each recipe required.
Really it’s not the price or material cost I despise, but it’s more the fact that all the materials for it are Timegated, so if you want to obtain it in a timely manner, you’re going to have to dump about as much gold to get the mats as you would just buying the precursor off the TP.
I really liked the scavenger hunt part of the precursor crafting as it gave it a sense of story and weight, and hell I really would enjoy chattering the mats to craft it….only I’m not gonna wait 3 months to get the kitten thing. That’s just ridiculous. I could get the gold I’d need in half the time just by playing casually and selling all the rares and exos. Screw Timegates.
Would love if they got rid of target limits all together. Think of the sweet sweet choas.
Certainly not going to complain about some extra gold in my pocket, but it reading that in the patch notes did have me concerned that J.Smith got beaned in the head and locked in a closet. I hope he’s okay.
I have to wonder what impact the dungeon switch is going to have. Is that achievement once per day or just continuous? A 5-gold bonus on a set of dungeons that’s just going to be speed-run is going to faucet a lot of gold into a smaller number of hands.
I don’t, Smith an stay in that closet for the rest of entirnety. Hate what he did.
Ya know, I’m happy for the most part with the patch…but I’m not gonna pat somebody on the back that let their house keep burning while they insisted it was fine.
As far as my reading comprehension skills go, “We are going to fix this and that because it’s not in line with how we envisioned GW2” does not equal “Everything’s fine, guys!”. They very much deserve a pat on the back for recognizing/picking up problems pointed out to them and fixing them, and even fixing some longstanding issues.
The only thing I’m a bit bummed about is that they changed nothing about the ratio of piles of flax seeds to vials of linseed oil. I’m hoping they’ll still change that at some point in the future. Otherwise this patch puts a big smile on my face, a sentiment shared by my guild mates so far (so it’s not just an individual opinion).
They never really acknowledged these problems until recently and only after they saw that HoT was underperforming. I’ll agree this is a good change and I’d come back and play if other games weren’t holding my interest right now, but I’m sticking to what I said. This is the kind of thing they should’ve done or started looking into maybe a month after hot released, he’ll I’ll give them two months even, I’m feeling generous. Not half a year later.
By all means, be happy, but don’t forget we only got this because it started affecting their pocketbooks.
I have to ask if you are playing other games that have your interest so you are not coming back, why do you bother to post? Not being sarcastic or a smart elec but when I lose interest in things I don’t re-vist.
Nah, good question. Thing is I do enjoy and love Gw2 and I wanna get back into it. Just a lot of Anet’s decisions and designs kittened me off and pushed me away from the game. By biggest underlying complaint was that I was not being rewarded for my time playing the game, nor did I feel like I was making any meaningful progress on any of my goals, those being ascended armor and legendaries. Everything I wanted was placed behind a Timegated grind so I just quit.
How dare they make it so people can earn money by playing the game and not having to farm for materials in silver wastes to sell on the trading post! This is just asinine! Making money in a game shouldn’t be fun, it should be hard and require grueling and mind numbing pu boring grind!
Making money has to be balanced around a healthy game economy or else the game becomes unplayable.
It is definitely a legitimate concern for people who understand this, however I don’t think this will cause a problem (and clearly John Smith doesn’t think so either or else it wouldn’t have been added to the game).
I agree, wow I never expected those two words to come out of my mouth. But since HoT inception, there have be a lot of gold and crafting sinks added to the game, in addition to changes in crafting recipes. While they did try to divide this stuff out among fractals, people were more interested in dungeons, and to get decent rewards from fractals, you needed masteries and agony resistance, another thing which was a gold sink or investment barrier however ya wanna look at it.

Just make deathly chill apply 1-2 stacks of burn, he’ll change the trait to call it frost bite or freezer burn. Would fix all our problems. Bleed is just dump and was a way to get us out of the spotlight.
Tell me this is sarcasm, please!
This is just a disaster anyway you look at it, PvP really needs to get over itself and stop affecting the PvE crowd.
PvP in this game is like watching a unicorn on the toilet after it’s eaten 1 week old Taco Bell. A giant rainbow colored kittenstorm. Why they keep balancing exclusively around it is beyond me.
Ya know, I’m happy for the most part with the patch…but I’m not gonna pat somebody on the back that let their house keep burning while they insisted it was fine.

Guys, relax.
This change really isn’t as much of a nerf as you make it out to be. In fact, if you actually put some effort into your skill rotation you will be able to surpass the damage of the old trait.
Also, nothing is easier to cleanse now. Chilled is still there, the damage part just moved to a different condition, one that is applied a lot more frequently now. So if anything, you get better coverage for your overall condition pressure. And let’s be honest, the strongest part about chilled wasn’t the damage anyway. It’s the movement impairment and the tripled cooldowns, which still works the same.
The chilled damage was a constant 700-800 damage per second. It only needed to be applied once, bleeds fall off and if cleansed you have to start stacking all over again. PvE, meh I think you’re right. PvP, lol, nobody is going to pick this trait. This trait at most is adept tier now, no, adept minor.
Ya know, I’m happy for the most part with the patch…but I’m not gonna pat somebody on the back that let their house keep burning while they insisted it was fine.
This change is just so much kitten , just like infinite amounts of kitten . Who in their right mind thought this was the ‘RIGHT’ way to balance the reaper?
You think ANET has a right mind? Please, you’re giving em too much credit.
Oh sorry, you got the wrong game, we don’t fix core class issues here, no our balance team just either over buffs or guts professions, the in between being meaningless changes.
Ahhahahahahaha. Ah what a joke. Patch was pretty decent but god they still have one of the most pathetic excuses for a balance team I’ve ever seen. Knew this would happen with all the reaper hate flying around.
So, I bought the original GW2 when it first launched, and I loved it for a couple months, but then it just got really old, doing the same thing every day (and with no challenge either). When raiding came out, I thought it’d be kind of fun, since I enjoyed the combat in GW2 back in the day. First thing I learned is that my favorite class (Engineer with power gear) isn’t “viable” despite putting out a lot higher numbers than any condi build. Second, is that, because of the whole no trinity thing, the mechanics were kind of lackluster.
Since no one pugs anyway, I’ve been just sitting and doing the same thing every day, and there’s just nothing else to do. I’m just not really enjoying GW2 anymore, and I don’t have any other games to play… so I just don’t know what to do.
Welcome to the club~ Here having same problem in GW2 – there is literally nothing to do.. all classes lvl 80 // 100% completion // did all what was fun for me to do..
Can’t raid since they didn’t implement a freakin LFG system for new raids as if it was somewhat hard.. Fractals and just farm daily // PvE is just a laugh since there’s nothing to do and gain from it really…Sad but GW2 is dying with all what they do..
This club got drinks? I’ll buy ya both one. Don’t got 100% completion but I hit the wall where to get anywhere/craft anything, I had to go at the Pace ANET set. Doing things I like simply doesn’t reward me enough gold to do anything, And while I don’t really mind the materials required for ascended and by extension legendary crafting, Timegates ruin the experience for me. This game no longer lets me advance at my pace but instead at the pace ANET has dicated….glacially slow and boring.
TBH I agree their attitude towards instanced content is extremely weird. Currently it’s somewhat favourable, but I’m pretty sure that’s gonna be rather short lived. After wing 3 and 1-2 new fractals we prob won’t see a proper update anymore for years.
you need to bring dungeons back
But let’s make sure we understand who killed dungeons: we did, when we decided that 70 silver less made them not worth our time.
Right, it wasn’t purposefully chosen by the economy devs to make it feel unrewarding.
I tell ya, economists are quickly becoming one of my most hated people. Added in a ton more gold sinks and time gates into the game, made ascended harder to achieve, course the dungeon gold nerf. Then in the real world I got them telling me gas being less than 2 dollars a gallon is a horrible horrible thing.

So I take it; the expansion isn’t worth the money?
If you compare the expansion to the base game…it doesn’t add much. Mainly the biggest draw is elite specs and guilds halls. The maps are a wonder to navigate but after that wears off, you have to fight the Megaserver system using LFG to get to a map to do the map meta. You also have masteries, which while I do enjoy, you also have to get mastery points (think skill points in base game) by doing adventures (which are Locked behind events) or get to places to channel, some of which require masteries from other lines.
Overall, I feel the expansion is worth maybe 25 dollars in all. It was supposed to provide a foundation for them to more easily add in and update content, but that was the biggest line of the century.

@ broken Memory Dude, seriously, there has always been a grind in GW 2. You grinded WB to some rewards and stuff to sell, you grinded SW and dry top for the recipes, you grinded dungeons for liquidity and you grinded all the maps for crafting a legendary and you grinded world events/festivals to craft/obtain a skin…..stop beating a dead horse, the only problem with hot maps is the fact that the timers did not allow players to properly grind the way they wanted to grind the maps with currency requirements set up a bit too high. That is the only problem. Apart from that, no the expansion is certainly not falling apart
There’s always been grind but I don’t think anyone can deny the grind has increased. Even Anet admitted there’s more grind than they wanted, so I’m not really sure what else to say on that issue.
That, plus this grind is Timegated to beat heck. If you don’t show up at the right event, at the right time you get next to nothing for the reward currency, having to do it all over again, PLUS hoping to God that the stupid Megaserver system doesn’t decide to put you in a less populated map. I’m so kitten tired off all the Timegates for higher level crap in this game from dragon stand, to legendaries and ascended. It’s the reason I stopped playing,
I just wish more emphasis was put on crafting in this game then it is. I love the crafting system, but am sick of all the dang Timegated materials!
Truly, I think it’s a problem with all classes and class balance in general. ANET wants to make it so all classes can fill all roles, but in their own unique and special way. While balance is hard itself, ANET never mastered this even before the giant stone that was Hot. I truly think they need to do monthly balance passes and not worry about their esports scene near as much as they do. Having pros go in and showcase the shortcomings of your game is not a good thing.
