I kind of prefer Superior Aria for the cooldown on “Retreat!” or “Stand Your Ground!” but it’s not really necessary. 25 Virtues or 25 Honor aren’t really consistent bonuses, so I tend to stay away from them and take utility. That’s also why I don’t like Unscathed Contender all that much.

Beside, the AR we now have trivialize the content. Before, you had to know how to dodge to do level 40-48. Now, with 55 AR, you can just take it and still survive. With 55 AR, agony hits, on level 48, for less than it did when we began at level 10…

Is that what Anet wants ? When they released fractals, I was hoping they would reward skill for progression, not force us to stack gear… The AR shouldn’t even be necessary, we can “easily” do higher levels fractals all the way to the roadblock that Maw is, as all other agonies can be dodged.

Fractals rewarded knowledge of safe spots and gimmicks to work around Jade Maw when they were first released. Anet also realized they could make money from Living Story and put a cap on Fractals and said forget about it.

Whirling Wrath is inconsistent at best and not worth interrupting your Sword chain. If your Whirling Wrath doesn’t crit and/or doesn’t connect with each hit, it’s pretty much a waste. If I was purely focused on achieving the highest possible damage, I wouldn’t bother with taking condition removal at all and would maximize % damage increases. 20 Virtues is pretty strong for condition removal, and with Pure of Voice being bugged and converting 2 conditions, it also has worth. You could always do something weird like take “Save Yourselves!” and Contemplation of Purity if you didn’t want to trait condition removal, but that starts to interfere with your slot skills.

To quickly touch on the idea of being an “Anchor,” though…. There’s really no such thing. Bosses will usually aggro to who hits them first or who is doing the highest damage, and they will completely ignore Toughness. There is the case of the Ettin in FotM, but it’s aggro starts to change the higher up you advance in levels. I thought anchoring was great when I thought it actually did something, but after watching my own recorded dungeon runs and paying closer attention to what fights are actually like, it turned out to be a big myth. AH is lazy and breeds players that don’t want to dodge. It’s a crutch and it’s not actually helpful, so I don’t see any reason to use it. If you don’t care and just want to go around and do things on your own, I don’t really mind, but it is pretty bad for speed clearing or anything where you want to be in and out of a dungeon quickly. An AH build will simply not come close to the DPS of a proper Sword build.

I came back to this thread after I was linked to it from another and I have to say, I’m shocked and appalled at how closed-minded and negative you guys are. I guess I have to explain a few things I thought were obvious.

I KNOW a cleric guardian isn’t the most effective build. I main a mesmer whom I’m a lot better at and has a more efficient build. But sometimes I don’t want to play her. I prefer more supportive builds so I made a cleric guardian and purposefully run headfirst into situations with her just to see if I can survive them solo. When I am with a team, I am more cautious but I like to see how well I can help them survive. I also use my Guardian when my guild does temples and someone needs to heal and protect npcs. You can claim it’s a bad build all you want but I have gone toe-to-toe with champions, without dodging, and survived. In fact, I often have to remind myself that dodging heals me.

I KNOW HotW1 can be done in 15 minutes. I also know that I was in a pug so it wasn’t going to go smoothly. I expected 30 to 45 minutes. Three hours is unacceptable by any stretch of the imagination.

I am NOT blaming the ranger for playing a ranger. I’m blaming the ranger for making poor decisions. Running in when the group wasn’t ready was a poor decision. Fighting in melee range with a ranged weapon was a poor decision. Taking action before then group even formulated a plan was a poor decision. In respect to her, I made the same poor judgement when I ran in after her.

I am NOT saying I am some sort of godly player that never does anything wrong. In fact, I have stated – several times – that I should have left when I knew things would be bad but I prefer to stick things through to the end. You can call it a noble trait as well as a character flaw. I’m also believe in letting others play the way they want to play. I wasn’t using an optimal dps build so I don’t expect others to do the same. This was meant to be a fun jaunt through a dungeon, not a self-inflicted test of tolerance.

As we all know, aggro has next to nothing to do with how much damage enemies receive. I have, on several occasions, played my mesmer, stood right next to champions and burned all my damage-dealing cooldowns in a desperate effort to gain aggro so they would stop attacking downed teammates. Even though I was outdamaging the rest of my team, it almost never worked. The devs have even stated that aggro doesn’t work that way. Now if you can show me a way that dps does gain aggro at least 75% of the time, I would love to see how you do it. There is no sarcasm in that statement. I welcome the chance to learn such a battle mechanic should I need to help a downed teammate again.

I after the first very bad wipe, I stated that we came up with a gameplan. When I said “we” I mean all of us. The ENTIRE team. That’s why I was rather… perturbed, when two members instantly forgot what we ALL decided to do just a few moments prior. Don’t you guys think that’s a reasonable thing to get upset about?

I do NOT like taking control of situations that I am not responsible for. It’s a personal petpeeve because of personal experiences. When I want to be in charge, I will start groups. When I don’t want to be, I look for groups and follow the leader’s orders. If the leader is bad or needs help, I offer assistance and advice, as I had done during the planning phase, but I do NOT take control from them unless it’s dire, life-or-death situation. Dungeon parties for videogames will never count as life or death. That is my personal philosophy. If you don’t agree with it, that is your right, but I’m not going to change it.

Yeah, I remember that thread. I don’t get the guardian forums. I made one last post to explain things more clearly. Whether it works or not, I’m washing my hands of it.

As for the video, it’s good and I’m kind of flattered that someone would go through such trouble just for me but I’m not going to play that kind of build on my guardian. I don’t find it fun. When I want to challenge something seriously, I’ll use my Mesmer instead. Yes, with Rampagers because I don’t want to be a clone. I have enough of them.

Sad for the game in general, when the upper-tier players would rather troll the forums than help people asking for it. I do place part of the blame on ANet for the lack of high-level end-game content, creating pockets of bored tryhards who don’t have the stomach for PvP and are tired of Infinite Guild Banner trolling.

And unimpressed in general with the trolling here, which seems to vacillate between name-calling, acting as if you have been proven correct through argumentation, and pretending like it was all a big joke.

The general lack of talent is depressing.

I could send you an invite to BHB if you like. You would make a good fit. A lot of the upper tier players produce video guides and builds and have Youtube channels and streams where they teach people, including myself. The dungeon forums are a disconnected mess full of imbeciles that post about how hard TAFU is with Cleric’s gear Signet Staff Guardian. There are also a lot of BHBs around, too.

You think content should take less than an hour in any game? Besides, a group that isn’t optimized doesn’t mean it’s totally bad. A decent group, with decent gear, and non-specific classes or non-optimized builds can still clear stuff relatively quickly if the players are good.

There is no reason to intentionally run non-optimal gear unless you’re bad. Content should always be cleared as fast as, or close to as fast as possible. There is no reason to intentionally make content take longer than it has to.

How can you survive agony if you are alone at maw?

If you pug a lot you understand why i don t like to be in the hands of guardians or thieves/eles that have high chances to miss their tome/blasts

If you have played a necro to reward lvl 48 and don’t know how to survive maw agony at that level without anyone’s help, I just don’t know what to say… Next you’re gonna tell me you die on the final laser when there aren’t any crystals near by…

i just have ele and mesmer
since ele is really hard to combo out at maw and almost impossible if you get targeted, and mesmer is impossible to keep alive alone….

You can’t keep Mesmer alive on its own…? I mean, you have like 80% uptime on reflects, Vigor on crit, and Blurred Frenzy. Not to mention loads of Dazes and a solid HP pool.

Have a boss that is in the image of me and swears / insults and is invulnerable. The only way to beat it is to akitten the room for 10 hours until it gets bored. It’s also on a 3 second respawn timer so if you afk and don’t react fast enough after it’s dead, you have to fight it again.

Perception of classes and pugs are inconsistent and mostly wrong. Necromancer’s Blinds are pretty strong, but that’s it really.

Strong aoe blinds are cool but necro would be cooler if it was unique to them, and it’s not. Engineers and thieves have a ton of aoe blind and guardians can spam a fair amount of it. Elementalists also have some spammable blind with Lightning Hammer, a blind field with glyph of storm on earth attu and some other aoe blind on their weapons. You know the class sucks when one of the few redeeming feature is done by other classes that can also do practically everything else better than they do.

I tried to like necro but.. no. Just, no.
