Well with the current state of the cash shop and RNG, the players are now forced to wonder what the difference is between buying cash —> gems --> gold and just buying gold. Was that something ANet factored in when they nerfed farming with DR?

Because the existence of an intermediate currency allows for a fluid exchange based on the scarcity of said intermediate currency.

The exchange isn’t static. If there’s lots of gold in the economy, gems will become more expensive (more people converting gold -> gems). If there’s less gold in the economy, gems will reflect player’s purchasing patterns and become cheaper (less people converting gold -> gems.). Gems and its scarcity exists as a base for the calculation of this exchange ratio.

“T6 mats and lodestones now available in the cash shop”.

You’re making an assumption that every player in the game wishes to purchase and consume T6 mats/lodestones. This is not true, as can be seen the sheer existence of these materials listed on the TP for sale. People forget that rising costs of materials also benefits the sellers, who are also players. Overall, I imagine that increased price of materials have negligible impact on gem purchases, as detailed as follows (if you’re interested.)

Why does gold cost so much?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Ursan.7846

Ursan.7846

Because the population as a whole actually does think that these are decent rates to convert Gems → Gold at.

http://www.gw2spidy.com/gem

Since April, the ratio has remained remarkably steady. This means that there’s roughly an equal amount of people converting Gems → Gold vs Gold → Gems. When people convert Gems → Gold, it makes Gems “cheaper”, and vice versa for Gold → Gems (Makes gems “more expensive”).

If enough people thought that the Gems → Gold ratio is too low, then they will not do it, and Gems will get more “expensive” (lowering the “cost” of gold via gems). But you don’t see that. Thus, it can be inferred that enough people find the rate acceptable.

It’s faux outrage. It’s not like they’d take the post seriously if those lines weren’t included, since it is severely critical of the game; these same people discredit or sarcastically dismiss meaningful, matter-of-fact critiques. If someone can’t get over two lines to critique the rest, then that says more about that person than it does about the OP. (And, no, I don’t agree with the OP’s post.)

Right, and the OP threw the last two lines to bait out the fanboys. This says that the OP is obviously not seriously interested in good discussion by tossing out an obviously inflammatory statement.

As someone who works at a whole own subsidiary of another company, our sales and expenses are tracked by our accounting department with our aggregate profits and losses appearing on our parent company’s quarterly and yearly statements.

Yes, in the end it’s all their money but the money first goes through our hands on the way to theirs.

Exactly. It’s a very common industry practice. I don’t get why people make such a huge deal about it and imply that it’s a “bad” thing.

And from where are you gleaning that bit of information from? And don’t say Dontain’s video because that guy is foiling the inside of his flat to keep out the mind control rays.

It makes sense. It’s what normal companies do. Revenue from one product line almost never all go directly back to said product line.

However, it’s stupid to infer that this practice is something of a negative to said product line. NCSoft is well aware of the profitability of GW2, and will continue to support this product and expand Anet while helping manage the financial aspect of the company (Which is also very important and time-consuming.) And lets not forget how NCSoft funded the development (5+ years?) of GW2 in the first place. Where did those funds come from, if not NCSoft’s coffers, which other games such as Lineage contributed to?

TL;DR: People make too much fuss about an incredibly routine industry practice.

Also, I don’t doubt that the conversion rate isn’t super great, but some idiots drop $50 on those dumb RNG boxes for an ugly weapon skin, so those kinds of people are out there. My point was more aimed at the fact that Anet will do many things(except nerf CoF) to make gold scarce so that anybody(lazy people with money) might be more inclined to purchase gems.

Having gold scarce most likely does not lead to people purchasing more gems.

Prices of goods on TP and gem themselves aren’t static. Scarce gold will simply lead to lower TP/Gem prices. The latter simply means that the Gem/Gold ratio will react by making Gems cheaper as gold becomes scarce in the economy.

Yes, Anet does many thing to make people purchase more gems. However, those efforts are mainly focused on coming out with cool stuff on the Gem Store. The overall economy in this game most likely has very little impact on Gem purchases seeing as the Gem/Gold exchange actually self-adjusts to the player economy.

People opening 5000 coffers and got nothing would probably disagree with you.

Do you see people complaining about the Mini from the coffers? They’re random, with pretty small chance (0.75% according to the wiki) but people don’t mind because they can purchase it directly from the TP. RNG isn’t the problem, the account-bound factor is.

And how many people would think that missing out on skins in an RPG is an consequence of the same magnitude as stopping to breathe and dying?

It seems disanalogous to compare the consumption of video games (or, broadly, entertainment) to the consumption of, say, hygiene products. The former give more selectivity. The latter are a bit more restrictive inasmuch as I pay a heavy social penalty for failing to use them and their distribution as non-digital products restricts availability in ways not necessarily true of today’s computer games.

This statement would be true if P&G was the only company which provides hygiene products. Which it isn’t. You’re providing a false dilemma here. You’re trying to frame the P&G example as a “Use hygiene product or not use it.” That’s not true and you’re contriving the example to create your false dilemma.

There are plenty of example of companies who own many brands of luxury goods, such as soda, physical toys, television shows, etc exist. (I watch HBO solely to watch Game of Thrones, but they do finance many other projects). The product being provided isn’t what’s important, however. The point is the concept of liking a company’s product, and yet not supporting said company because of dislike of other product lines.

Also, I’m not sure it is justified to claim “completely arbitrary” (which is the kind of hyperbole you have asked not to be used) without further identifying or analyzing the standard in question. The most rigorous philosophical discourse tries to make the best possible case for an opposing position—even making arguments the opposition hasn’t considered—before rejecting it. I can think a few components for a standard here that prima facie could provide the consistency you seem to want (although whether they bear out under intense scrutiny is another story).
There’s complexity here as well, as the larger the company, and the more areas in which it is involved, the greater the difficulty in sorting out the myriad motives, products, direction, etc.

It is arbitrary in the sense that the application of this standard is just that: arbitrary. It is applied in some cases, but not in others. But my point isn’t to reject the original subject’s viewpoints because it’s arbitrary (I cannot. It is his opinion), but to simply point out that

1. He has no evidence on his assumptions, and will need to provide proof of his claims if he is to be persuasive in a logical manner.
2. That what he is calling out is a standard practice in today’s industry, and that his opinions are not in the majority, as proven by the sheer proliferation of industry conglomerates.

Finally, people in our time and age are wildly inconsistent. (This isn’t directed at Aeonblade, by the way.) Often this is because they haven’t thought through their positions. But sometimes it’s because consistency isn’t seen as an important or necessary value. Your response here is predicated on certain commitments that not everyone in the Western world shares.

You’re completely correct on this.

Do you seriously use every single P&G product in your household? I find that incredibly hard to believe.

He said everyone of “those.” He was referring to the products you listed from P&G.

Yes, I realize. However, by using his own logic, he’ll only support a company if he likes/uses “most or all” of its products. Which P&G has many. This is not including the many products P&G creates that are not for use by consumers.

His reasoning is so completely arbitrary. You can not support GW2 if you don’t like it. That’s a perfectly legitimate reason by itself. But not supporting it because you like it, but you don’t like the company’s other products? A completely arbitrary standard which I highly doubt can be strictly adhered to.

Not many people are going to agree with you on that and even less people care about it.

So it’s wrong to find a company where you enjoy all or most of the games they have to offer. The difference is with WoW, I play SC and Diablo as well. So that works for me. I don’t play Aion or Lineage, therefore it does not work for me.

See how I decide where my dollars go?

It’s not wrong, but it feels very arbitrary to not support a game because you don’t like other games that the publisher supports.

Activision Blizzard owns the following game franchises:

Crash Bandicoot
Guitar Hero
Call of Duty
Tony Hawk
Spyro the Dragon
Warcraft
Starcraft
Diablo

Do you play most/all these games? Even if you narrow it to Blizzard, do you play Warcraft 3? Or just WoW? (Two completely different games). Do you like/play the Lost Vikings? Money spent on D3/WoW may very well be funding development of WC4 or a new Lost Vikings game, in addition to Project Titan/Hearthstone. The exact money trail, you have no idea, just as you have no idea how NCsoft is distributing funds.

EDIT: This same logic can be applied to non-gaming products as well. Do you like Crest toothpaste? Duracell batteries? Febreze maybe? They are all owned by Proctor & Gamble, which also own a huge portfolio of brands (Head & Shoulders, Olay, Oral-B, Tide, Charmin, etc…)

EDIT2: By the way, don’t get me wrong. If you don’t support GW2 because you don’t like GW2, that’s perfectly fine. If you don’t support GW2 because you don’t like NCsoft/Lineage/Wild Star but love GW2 is….again, a bit extreme.

I describe change as actual changes to the outside world, not an instance within a zone. If parts of Orr begin to sink again and stay sunken, that is change. If Mount Maelstrom erupts and a lava flow permanently destroys part of the forest, that is change. If centaurs migrate closer to Divinity’s Reach as to replace the drake population with centaurs, then that is change.

Adding a few instances whose existence provides no change to the world outside of the instance is NOT change.

These temporary events “temporarily” change the world and then the content fades away as soon as the event ends. The point of this thread is to protest this and demand change in this so-called “Living World”.

So then what do you call the new (permanent) settlements in Southsun?

There’s been two Living Story arcs completed so far, F & F and SoS. F&F added changes in instanced areas (which, by your definition, doesn’t count.). SoS added several new structures and settlements in Southun. Going by your definitions, Anet is 1/2 so far.

EDIT: Also, so far in the Dragon Bash arc, open-world NPC Theo Ashford has been killed. This means you’ll never see this NPC in the open world, hanging around in LA again. Change, no?

Cragstead was just a small area built on top of the spider cave in Wayfarer Foothills. It holds no significance since it is an instance and has nothing to present players with.

Hatchery provides players with nothing besides what was available in Flame & Frost.

Southsun has become an integral part of the game since it has been involved in TWO events, not just one and thrown away.

So I fail to see your argument.

I have no argument. Simply pointing out that the world has changed. Cragstead is in the process of being rebuilt, with NPCs who thank you for helping them collect their mementos. Southsun has several new structures and outposts which didn’t exist before.

I am slightly perplexed by your wording. “Provides players with nothing.” What do you mean by this? Because by that definition, you’re somewhat correct. there is nothing “provided” aside from a few new NPC conversations and new scenery. But doesn’t that fall under the category of “change?”

This post mentioned SAB and gem store skins. I am talking about the lack of general, readily available, farmable, skins in the game. We have the same 2 skins for each weapon / armor type from level 1 – 80.

Minus the addition of guild weapons (and SAB skins) there has not been any sort of addition to the weapon (or weapon skin) pool that is readily available or farmable besides the ones I mentioned. Guild weapons, fractal weapons, being the exception.

How do you define “readily available and farmable?”

I’d argue that with current exchange rates, the Wintersday/Rox/Braham weapon skins cost about 25G (800Gems). Does that not fall under the category of readily available and farmable? Or are you categorizing them solely on their existence in the Gem Shop? I just assumed this was mainly a complaint against RNG boxes, which I can certainly support.

You’re being disingenuous by making these generic statements without bringing specific examples. If you wish to be persuasive, you should be more precise in your communication and examples.

What game has mechanics of gathering tools, and has unlimited gathering tools available in a non-cash shop format? (Not Everquest)

Which game has bank slots, and gives extra bank slots available in a non-cash shop format? (This is the point. You’re the one who stated that features like this are “provided free of charge in every other MMORPG.” Please name me an MMO which provide you extra bank slots free of charge. Definitely not Rift or WoW or LOTRO. Bank slot expansions cost money, real or virtue.)

Which game allows you to change your character’s appearance for free? (Certainly not WoW, requires actual money. Certainly not in Rift. Can be done with in-game money but definitely not free. Doesn’t even exist in LotRO last time I played)

What game, with stationed merchant NPCs, allow you to instantly summon a merchant NPC to you for free? (I honestly don’t know of any MMO which lets you do it for free.)

So what is your point? Your original posts states that:

the worthwhile items in the gemstore are actually features that are provided free of charge in every other MMORPG

This is obviously false.

EDIT: Honestly, what is your point? Why are you ignoring the aspects of the Gem Store which you label as “free in every other MMO?” Again, there’s plenty of evidence that the playerbase are eating it up. There’s many posts extolling the virtues of the quaggan backpacks and the molten mining pick. We’ve seen massive spikes in Gem ratios when character slots, bank slots, and transmutation slots went on sale. And then we have NCSoft’s earnings report which basically stated GW2’s Gem Store has done wonderful business. So basically, what you label as “rubbish” is selling real well.

The group I was playing with told me to LoS behind this stone pillar, and just like that all 16 mobs came around the corner where we proceeded to quickly AoE them down (since WoW doesn’t have the 5 mob limit). From what I hear, LoSing in PvP is a huge part of the game as well for melee vs casters.

That being said, WoW has a huge amount of strategy and mechanics for PvE that are pretty refreshing after playing GW2 PvE for 9 months, I wish GW2 integrated alot of the same stuff.

I would say LoSing is a pretty normal strategy in most games I’ve played.

Isn’t LoS useful in GW2 too though? Off the top of my head I use it a ton during CM runs, specifically for the fight with Seamus where you LoS his adds around a wall to AoE them down quickly, and the fight after you get past Wahlen where you LoS that huge mob inside the box. Or in Cliffside fractals, during the arm seals where you’re LoSing the chanters in the hallway.

You use the skin on an item, you can’t use it on another item.

By the way, if anyone has time, you should check out Hatchery and Cragstead, just to talk to the NPCs who appreciate the things you’ve done for them.

Super minor. But great reminder of what we did.

The game is becoming a Grind

I’m going to bring up this quote from Anet Prez Mike O’Brien every time someone mentions “But GW2 was promised to have no grind!”

Here’s what we believe: If someone wants to play for a thousand hours to get an item that is so rare that other players can’t realistically acquire it, that rare item should be differentiated by its visual appearance and rarity alone, not by being more powerful than everything else in the game. Otherwise, your MMO becomes all about grinding to get the best gear. We don’t make grindy games — we leave the grind to other MMOs.

GW1 and GW2 has always been about cosmetic grind. You’re fooling yourself if you assume otherwise.

Why can I not play the game for rewards?

The two Southsun backpieces (tentacle and flower) are also obtained through quasi-scavenger hunts, just like the Moa chick in GW1. The F&F fused gauntlets were obtained through playing the game. The shattered holo wings for Dragon Bash is obtained through playing the game.

Rewards for playing the game do exist.

I must admit I was mistaken. The risen mini is not account bound and can be purchased from the TP.

I also was surprised by receiving a mini crate from Anet as a thank you gift for previous purchases in the gemstore.

I feel quite stupid right now but wont edit my post because i desirve it.

My sincerest apologies for having rushed to conclusions.

You, sir, deserve some respect.

I hope you realize “real” markets are subject to fluctuations too.

i.e. harddrive prices skyrocketing due to floods in thailand, oil prices jumping due to unrest in Iran.
