Esports scene is still possible, the infrastructure is coming. It will need help and plenty of support from both players and developers.

Saying LoL is a joke of an Esport is a bit rich though. It’s the number 1 watched game on Twitch and the world championship, which had big money prize pools pretty much broke every twitch record there is. We aren’t playing LoL here though, we are playing GW2.

An Esport in its infancy. It has to learn to crawl before it can walk and then hopefully run. GW2 also fits nicely into a niche, MMORPG. There a players out there, plenty of them, that don’t like MOBA, FPS or RTS games for PvP.

Balance is subjective. Everytime you make a build, you will not be balanced against every class cause every build has a trade off in stats, abilities and utilities.

I agree. An idea to make the game cost viable aswell could be the free pvp part but with 2 character slots only. For those players that want 1 of every class, Anet has made thier 60 bucks right there. Some people will stick with the 2, that’s ok though.

I played SWTOR as my last MMO. GW2 devs are like transparent godly saints compared to that team over at EA/Bioware. I gave SWTOR 9 months before I put it I. The “could have been fantastic” bin, I like GW2 enough to give them another 12 months.

I think Mr sharp has some good things planned for us this year in the pvp department, and if not, PvE is t that bad that I will have nothing to do.

He’ll, I might even do some WvW. Every time I look at it its full with a que and everything, that’s where the pvpers are.

Anybody else getting tired of being farmed..

This game is hard on casuals or faint hearted. If you dont have a team whom you play with at least 3-4 hours each day, you will get farmed. If you dont have a team, dont expect to enjoy this game. (Well if you enjoy playing with noobs and getting farmed by hardcore pvp guilds )
On top of that, no matter what u do; once a team gets hold on a point. They will stand on it like a turtle unless u come with at least 3. So in summary, you ll enjoy this game if you like:
1) Getting stomped and insulted by hardcore pvp teams
2) Spending the whole game trying to kick a bunker out of a capture point for forever.
3) Playing at most 2 viable builds per class
4) Not being able to know what is happening in that graphical mess, or not being able to identify what the opponent is doing due to not having any significant visual identifiers.
5) Playing 3 maps forever and a static boring game mode forever just to get some Rank Points!
6) not having a feel of progression. There is nothing to do in the mists other than running around in 3 maps in tournaments. Nothing to look for! Perhaps only the joy of beating newbies to the ground with a premade team.
7)grinding QPs and considering them as a sign of skill!
8)a PvP game with no PvP support.
9) Tons of bugs still waiting to be fixed from the beta weekends. Perhaps you may enjoy guessing which trait is actually working or not! Or Perhaps you may enjoy testing each trait for hours if those traits actually do what they promise to do!Perhaps you may enjoy guesssing if those skill statistics are actually true or not!

Well, you can see how much i enjoy this game. How much satisfied of the pvp we were promised to have! You must accept the fact that this is a not a pvp game with this amount of pvp content and will never be! Sorry, no matter how much u invest time into this game, the truth about this game (which is that this is not a pvp game but a pve game mainly, and will never be with this amount of pvp support or content) will never change.

Way to go! Got it off your chest? If that doesn’t encourage new or budding players to at pvp, nuthin will.

Each one of your points could have had a constructive spin. Don’t like the spell effects? Suggest workable, legible changes. Don’t like the tourney set up? Suggest alternate competitive game modes. I think you get my point.

As fun as Arena net bashing is, it’s currently like kicking a dog when it’s down just for being loyal. They have made some errors, misjudged thier pvp systems, the longevity of player participation and its corresponding progression.

I’m sure they know all this and have metric systems that tell them all the quantities data they need, but code and systems aren’t written in a day, a month or 3. I’m sure Jonathon Sharp knows that on average GW2 only has 200 viewers of the 15 or so twitch streams, 3/4 of them PvE, which is outside of the top 20 games being viewed at any one time, no exactly the kick off for an aspiring E sport.

I’m sure Mr Sharp knows this because he is a smart man, otherwise he wouldn’t be where he is. Arena net has the resources however, and a pretty vocal and loyal fan base to turn this around, hence this year is supposed to be jam packed with more pvp content. We won’t get everything we all want, but some of it will come and more will be in the pipeline.

There no subscription, and even in its current state, it’s better then any other MMORPG pvp wise on the market. I’ve tried em all (except GW1 ironically, I could t stand that games PvP at all, go figure) and Gaw2 is my MMO of choice for pvp combat.

I have some points.
I tottaly agreed with PvP skins on the gem shop, having its own section in PvP, solo ques
and how the balance is right now.
I dont agree with Vain when he said classes should be more difficult to play than there are now.IF this game is gonna be an E-sport, all classes should be easy to handle when u play them for at least 3hours. I agree, all classes are to easy to learn, but increasing difficulty wont bring too much excitement on new players.

I didn like when the guests started talking about mesmers portal and stuff, and the fact that 2 of them were main a mesmer, and they started to QQ about it, and at some point Java said “its your fault you’re bad L2P”

I liked whole environment, and especially the moment whit the EU,NA clash. xD. I’m looking fowrward to that.

Last thing, i aggree that Tournament tickets should be removed from the game. You cant believe how many teams would join paids if it wasnt for tickets.
I’m sure u can think of something else to make as of how to distinquish frees from paids..

The skill difficulty was probably in reference the difference across classes. I.e the difficulty to achieve the same damage output. Think “thief v Ele” etc etc. adding some more skills shots similar to how an Engi or Ele has to play instead of the often complained about Mesmer, thief or GS warrior burst. Some more ground targeting, less homing abilities would be good for the game. It promotes more skillful play.

Classes in thier current state are ok, but could be tweaked. Similar to other competitive games, they need to be easy to pick up but hard to master not just a set “rotation” with little risk and high reward.

Thanks Vain. After listening to your own random SOTG the other day it had me thinking and agreeing with it and I pretty much just recycled that into the post above. I haven’t heard the latest SOTG that we are posting about right now, it’s on my to do list for tomorrow though.

Pretty sure I’ll agree with most of it though. I think most of the top players have a good handle o. It, even if they are forced by the current game mode and meta to run the same class comp that everyone else is using, but that’s a by product of the game right now.

I play free tourneys with my guild, and we’re not even that organized. But it’s extremely fun to play with them, and no, we don’t enjoy paid tourneys much because we would get stomped (and because they consume a lot of tickets).

I agree matches should be more balanced, but ruining the fun for people who want to play with their friends for the sake of appealing to solo players is not the way to go. Both types of players should be equally treated.

Exactly. A team que and solo/duo que would be the greatest of Additions to the game at this point.

This is not world of warcraft to play 2v2 3v3, there is no team play with this mode.

The game is born for team play game ( at the moment with conquest mode ) where a mix of classes and build complete the meaning of the match.

Players from others mmo’s would already disagree with you right there anyway. WoW R G players would say less then 10 isn’t a team, SWTOR players would say less then 8 isn’t a team etc etc. my point is that time size and team play is subjective. I think a team is more then 1 person and less then however many it takes.

2v2, 3v3, 4v4 aren’t just WoW concepts. Iirc, GW1 had 4v4 random and team arenas. I think 4v4 is a solid size of TDM competition and an additional restriction of 1 class type per team would be fantastic, but I will settle for 2v2 and 3v3 aswell (would love it actually).

I’ve had some 2v2 battles at nodes and even some double duels in empty servers, the synergy is awesome.

Don’t discount options and game modes just because you don’t wish to play them. Abets best an is to implement as many options as possible, and let the player axe decide what is the most competitive mode and bracket by doing what what we do best, play the game.

If you like conquest and 5v5 team play, then have at it, I would be the last person to tell you how you should spend your game time.

Once again, this is a symptom of the solo/ duo que’ers facing full teams. There needs to be a separation, or make it similar to other ranked systems like wow or swtor where teams need to be formed prior to queuing. Which would be the nail in the coffin IMO.

The reason you get a 4v5 isn’t due to a rage quit. It’s because if someone logs off whilst in the que for a tournament, the que system doesn’t let you I know they are offline or try to replace them. It still thinks they are there and starts the match.

Anet needs to hotfix so it replaces someone after 60 seconds and reques the roster, or at least gives a pop up and let’s the other players know to resubmit.

The reason pugs are paired with teams and your idea of pairing solo/duo with solo/duo won’t work is because not enough people are ever queued up for any of it. It’s the same people in every other match. This is why organized groups are just farming rank points with free tournies. That 1 organized group ruins it for everyone else.

Alot more players would play frees if they knew it would only be against other solo/duo qeu’ers. The player pool would grow. Obviously the tournament system hinders this, that’s for Anet to reconsider. But it would be healthier for the game if solo/duo players had a fighting chance.

2v2, 3v3 etc in this game would be amazing. Nice and relatively quick fights, no healers to chase around whilst they pillar hump and wait for more long CD’s…… A good balanced 3v3 team could be so many different possibilities. Mix it up so you are strong on burst, but lack defence, max condi dmg but susceptible to power comps etc. you could do all of this with a mix of any 3 classes and just spec how you want to be best for your team.

That’s how you bring the player, not the class.

Just make free tournaments split, solo/duo que vs other solo/duo que. let the teams vs other teams. It’s not splitting the player base, because more pugs will play……… And form duo’s…… Then Form teams……

Would be healthy for the game. Leave paid team only of course. It gives some progression, kind of like LoL.

These threads are infinitely better the. The Mesmer/thief threads in every way shape and form. Watching players of those two classes bicker over who is more OP because each can kill the other inside of 2 globals is laughable. I would rather petition threads or question threads anyday.

I couldn’t give a kitten who is more OP. I try to play a balanced build, and the cheesy cookie cutter burst builds are the bane of new and learning players, without a doubt.

Pugs should play pugs, teams should play teams. There a thread petitioning for a solo que, sign it.

Solo/duo que would reinvigorate so much life into the game IMO. Especially later on down the track with a ladder/rating system and alternate game modes if they become available.

I think he means a solo que for free/paid with a rating system, that would t face premades at all, just other solo qeu’ers.

I support, in addition to solo que for 2v2, 3v3 etc. let teams que against teams, and pugs against pugs.

No need for a 1v1 que with a rating. A duel option would be good tho. Not for balancing reasons, I just think 1v1 solo que’s are against team play, even if that team is as small as 2v2 teams.

TG, you play same time as me and I’ve seen you in Free’s for sure. The que leaving problem is annoying for sure.

Arena net, know you got a lot on your plate at the moment, but if you could code it so that if someone in the que goes offline and doesn’t come back within 60 seconds it removes them from the Free que and sends a pop up to the roster leader to resubmit or even auto re-que’s the team, that would be awesome. Lots of times I que a free and go I to hotjoin for someone to leave and then it never pops and I have to leave and resubmit……

Any hotfix to that is a good fix IMO.

Hey Bomber,
Yes, I play from Australia, East Coast NSW just like you. Unlike what the general forum population will tell you, it’s not just Paid tournaments that don’t pop outside of NA prime time, it’s also Free tPvP that struggles. If you are queuing in oceanic times, the tournaments dry up around 10pm but that’s also a symptom of the holiday season taking its toll, winters day events being more popular and a lack of interest in GW2’s sPvP in its current state.

If you played a little later or earlier it would actually be a bit better, you are right smack in the deadzone at the moment.

sPvP is cross server, you can play with anyone from any of the NA servers, however, the Heart of the Mists area isn’t cross server, so you will only see Yak’s Bend players in that area unless in a party with others.

It can be easier to get a pop if you play as a full team, so you should definitely add me to friends and contact me either in game or yell at me on my stream (details in my sig). I’ll try and find a spot or que with you all though you do play a tad late for me except for weekend nights I’m normally offline around 1130pm.

My net is down for a few days so if you don’t see me online, don’t despair. If you can convince some guildies, get them to come hotjoin for a bit and maybe the PvP bug will catch on.

The game isn’t perfect by a long shot, some things are out of whack or downright missing.

But it will get better. It’s fine to be critical if its coherent. Lets see what Anet brings in the 1st Qtr of 2013. It could be just what we are waiting for. This game has plenty of things to do, I have barely done a thing besides sPvP since launch, like most others. When your feeling that frustration, that inner rage quit rising to the surface, take a swig of some good stuff and go do a map completion or something and the come back to pvp when you get that Pwn feeling again.

On a related note, if you want the community to grow, support your streamers. Get on there, follow them, view them on your 2nd monitor. Twitch helps to grow a game & raise its exposure.

Help streamers help the game and by extension, you.

Yo! I see you a lot in free tourneys, though I havent been on in the last few days. You usually see me on Foefire and BoK as the Guardian Nunganok, or Mesmer Cromlech Gate from WMD – Waste Management and Disposal. I wouldnt be surprised if you dont remember me since you do so many tournies but i see you guys almost every night. :P

Me and my team arent oceanic but we are on during oceanic prime time so I’ll be adding you to friends and would love to have the chance to earn the invite to BZ. Ive got over 120 matches played with a 1.3 w/l ratio.

Hi to all my sPvP brethren,
I hope everyone had a stellar Christmas and a Happy New Year! I have been contemplating making this post for a while and I will admit, I was hesitant. I’ve since decided to just go ahead with it.

What this post isn’t: QQ, trolling, eletism or anything of that nature. So as a bit of a disclaimer, if that’s your thing, there are hundreds of other posts to get your swag on and have a good trolling time.

What this post is: I am looking not only to get some more community cohesion, but to gauge the GW2 sPvP playerbase and see if we can band together a lil’ bit and have a bit of fun.

I am putting myself out there. I am currently rank 22, with the vast majority of my glory coming from Free Tournaments (around 250 matches, 45% or so win ratio). I pug them, solo or duo, alot. More then I want to truth be told.

I’m putting this offer out to anyone else who is in the same boat. Add me to friends (Valkyriez.6578) and I WILL run a tournament group with you in it. I am an oceanic player (Australian) so the vast majority of you will be sleeping when I am playing, but there are players out there that are night owls, shift workers, solo insomniacs and of course, my oceanic brethren.

I currently play with a guild called Deliriium [Dlrm] and we are based on the Sea of Sorrows server [SoS]. I am not the most pro team leader going around, but I can talk, communicate, run strats and am open to suggestions and of course feedback (conctructive of course).

I have set up a secondary guild, Bravo Zulu [BZ] for like minded players. I will only invite players to BZ if I have done a Free tournament with you. If you are in BZ, you will know that everyone else in there is interested in tPvP (Paids are not on the agenda right now). I have a Teamspeak server that is open to use during said tournament runs, Skype, and I can also set up a vent server if needed (prefer TS tho tbh).

I also have just started streaming all my PvP. As mentioned above, I am not a “Pro” player, so please dont expect to see the highest level gameplay when viewing. I started streaming to help out the GW2 sPvP community, not to be mocked by it. I have noticed GW2 stream viewers are now generally under 200, and I would like to help out in any way I can by doing what I already do, play the game.

Once again, YOU are invited to add me to friends if you either need a player to round out your team, want someone to que with or are interested in finding other likeminded PvP indaviduals to play with. I rarely Hot-Join, but will play that during Free que times (which are getting longer and longer). My stream link is down the bottom, chat with me on there, follow me or contact me in game.

If you are a team LF another consistent and reliable player during my timezones, send me a PM. Trial me, give me a go and I’ll show you that I can be a team player who can be relied on to do his job, whatever that is.

I personally play a DPS Guardian (I can bunker if needed), an offensive roaming Warrior and I have started to get my feet wet with a Legion Mesmer (Taugrim / Countless build) and of course, Shatter spec.

I’m sorry, but we pvpers, as a community shouldn’t be advocating, supporting or encouraging the tournament system as it stands even with your proposed changes ( which are good changes, but in no way fix any of the games current issues).

Some simple stats to light the way. 2.4 million copies sold. 50% are PvE players. That leaves 1.2 mill players that PvP. Divided up over two regions, then split that by another 50% who don’t do sPvP but instead do WvW (most likely more actually, but these are rough numbers). That leaves us with what, 300k? Take into account 50% attrition and we are down to under 150k players.

This sum of players is divided up between hotjoin, free and now paid tournaments. This is ridiculous. We are a player base that as pvpers are spread into too many small pools of players. I am a free tournament player. I have no interest to play paids in their current state and neither should you.. With a matchmaking rating system, the que times will get worse, not better.. This will not bring enough players back in to make it work, not even remotely.

We need to put players back into the same pool. We need to get rid of the tournament system and specifically the separation between free and paid. If we had a MMR system, where top teams fought each other, why would we need 2 deferent tPvP systems anyway? It makes no sense. needing 40 players to start a 5v5 match is also madness. Tournaments should be monthly/yearly. Outside of that, get a 5v5 premade que and a solo/duo que in the game on random maps.

Anything other than this and the game"s sPvP scene slowly dies, all balance bullkittene aside.

Don’t believe me? Go into WvW. I tried it for the first time the other day. It was full, absolutely chockers. That’s where the pvp minded players are at the moment. We can bag it all we want, call it PvX etc but if people are playing it, it’s thriving. Like it or not, the crowd that tell me to suck it up and L2P are the crowd that are killing this game. Go to Lions Arch, PvE’ers love this game, we should have that same satisfaction.

My 2 cents. I enjoy the pvp, but I won’t wait an hour for a competitive game and neither will most people. As much as I dislike WoW, I’ll take insta arena pops over an hour wait to do a 5v5 any day. Thanks for reading.

Matchmaking Concerns

Hello all,
First of all, let me make it clear that I run free tournament teams every single day during Oceanic time (roughly 5pm – midnight). We are by no means stellar, or self confessed champions. We do OK, and win more then we lose all though getting a win on 3rd round is becoming rarer lately.

We will probably never advanced into PAID, because, lets face it, we aren’t going to win a damn thing in there. The general consensus, and as it should be, is unless you can dominate in free tournaments, you won’t stand a lick of a chance in Paid and I’m fine with that.

My issue is with the matchmaking that is due to come into the game in the new year. I know the NA and EU teams aren’t experiencing this yet (I say yet, cause it’s already in PAID, just not Free) but the Oceanic Tournament scene has almost completely dried up and I’m talking “Free” tPvP scene. Don’t even think about Paid, cause as most have said, its only during NA prime time that Paid tPvP happens.

I digress a little, but here is the situation. The population, during Oceanic and Asian primetime is already so small that each tournament que for free tPvP is 30 mins +, sometimes after 9pm it just doesn’t pop at all. It’s because of the tournament system. You need 40 players…

Arena Net, essentially I am asking if there is a change to the Tournament structure planned to be implemented with matchmaking?. If matchmaking is too stringent, there might not even be a tournament to play in during Asian/Oceanic times. Matchmaking doesn’t bring new players in, it funnels players and segregates the community. That’s a good thing, when there is a sufficient community to segregate through skill levels. At the moment, we need each and every player during our prmetime in the one pool pf players.

You need to either change the system to individual ranked games, on a random map, or scrap the idea of matchmaking in free tournaments.

Take it from someone who was playing SWTOR on release day up until GW2 release day (yes, I lasted that long, how I did is beyond me). I played in the Ranked Warzone scene, when there was only 2 teams playing each other all night long.

It sucks.

Don’t let it happen to this game. We need more players to make matchmaking work (GW2 is already cross server, imagine if it was single server like TOR……. You couldn’t fill a hot-join server).

The question of how matchmaking is going to work is also important but probably deserves its own post. Is it from win/loss? An ELO system? Rank based? (heaven forbid rank based system).

Other then that, love the game, love the PvP. Some changes are necessary, but I reckon you know them better then I do. The game mode could use a revamp, I would love me some 3v3 or 5v5 and the abolishment of Quickness because I think that mechanic is the root of most damage/burst concerns and what actually pushes new players away from PvP.

You balance for pro players who know how to avoid a quickness PW or HB, but new players just get trolled by it a few times and say see ya later and don’t come back. We say “L2P”, they say “Enjoy your dead PvP, I’m going back to slaying dragons where I don’t need 40 people just to have one game”.

Bit doomsdayish but there ya go. It really is getting bad in oceanic primetime.

Valid concern IMO. It’s almost impossible to stop being stomped at the moment, and to stop a team mate being stomped is even harder. It’s not just thieves and Ele’s all though the stealth stomp is an isue. The problem with that specifically is they completely avoid damage to themselves and get to do a stomp. Other classes may have stability, but you will get wrecked trying to get a stomp off in a team fight. There’s always exceptions, but its a change I support.

After all, downed state is supposed to be a “chance” for a second life and the ultimate counter to burst is it not? If it isn’t, feel free to tell me what its for. it cant be a counter to anything if as soon as you get dropped, its Quickness + Invis/Mist = Stomp and dead.

Seems redundant if that’s the case.

My 2nd issue is Oceanic and latency related. I’m fine with current balance, and understand that most damage is avoidable including PW from thieves, HB from warriors etc. My issue is quickness and its effect on lag. Quickness by itself isn’t an issue if we are all on the same ping. But when my Aus team has a lowest ping that is most likely 10 times higher then the highest of the US teams we play against, its an issue (roughly sub 40ms in the US and ~400 – 500 on a good day in Aus with GW2 servers).

When I am going 1v1 with someone and a warrior charges me, I know to break stun and dodge or I’m going to eat the dirt. Yet, with quickness, its pretty much already happened before my computer renders it. I get charged, health drops super fast and dead. I don’t even get that stability pop and roll opportunity anymore. Against other Oceanic players, its much less an issue (we do guild sPvP sometimes).

So, 2 solutions that I can see here (3 if you include the standard “don’t like it then quit” attitude people tell you when you raise a concern). Give oceanic players their own servers, which wont happen and I actually wouldn’t want to happen. We aren’t a big enough pop to make it work (see SWTOR even tho that game dropped subs faster then the Titanic sank) and we certainly aren’t big enough to do WvW and it would be same servers matchups all year long.

Other option is to reduce the overall affect of quickness and put that dmg back into other abilities. I would prefer it gone tbh, cause it has become too much of a staple and essential to certain specs but I can see the argument against removing it and that’s fine as well, different opinions are different. But if you want to do E-Sports, and have anything other than pure NA teams on NA servers, it needs to change slightly. We already have to deal with teleporting and rubberbanding in Aus when we play GW2, don’t make it harder with quickness.

TLDR: Change the scoring system in sPvP to reward all players, not just the circle jerk of roaming we have now and consider a change to quickness as to not alienate your playerbase that doesn’t reside within 2000 miles of your server farms.

I’m not normally one for forum posts, and I’m generally not one for whinging. Nor am I the best player going around or a self styled “Pro” (unlike half the people that demand “Leaderboards and rating”, I know I would be middle of the pack, like 95% of the PvP population). I only have two main gripes about PvP and after reading these forums and most topics every day since launch (on my iPhone cause I have stuff all else to do at work lately) I wanted to add my 2 cents.

Hot-Join / sPvP: Yes, I know. It’s just hot join, and it doesn’t really matter. I agree to an extent. I mainly do Tournaments where I can (Free cause I’m an Aussie player and the population is a lil low in my primetime) so I’m aware that Hot-Join is specifically a place to test builds, have a bit of fun and play around with guildies, friends or meet randoms.

The issue is this, if Hot-Join isn’t an enjoyable experience, how do players then get the urge to progress to tPvP? I had no issues slipping straight into Tourney’s, but the vast majority of gamers, specifically solo players who may be looking for a guild/team, if they find the sPvP part unenjoyable why would they bother hanging around?

What do I find unenjoyable about sPvP I hear you ask?

“It’s perfect, cause all the fanboys tell me so and A-net made it”.

Only the scoring system. I know that glory means stuff all, its only cosmetic, winning means more, you only get skins etc etc etc. That’s fine, but the scoring system needs to change regardless of what it gets you because it is breeding a mentality in Hot-Join that is not team orientated and makes the game unenjoyable. It is most likely adding to the issue of low population. If it’s our only form of a visual progression, then it needs to be a form of progression that is enjoyable. As a bunker, I spend most of my time doing the right thing and guarding points and end a match on 80 points or so per game. My team mates finish on 200+. its only cosmetic, but jeez, it takes a while when ur pumpin 80 a game to care.

How to change it for the better though without breeding a culture of afker’s, farmers, kill stealers etc is the hard part IMO. My suggestion, which may need some tweaking, is to credit all players on a team for every action. Ultimately every player at the end of a game ends up with the same amount of points as thier team mates, regardless of what they did in the game.

“But, but, I worked hard and he didn’t”. That’s fair enough, at the screen at the end of a match players need to be ranked differently, so that there is still a “leaderboard” as such.

Tell me, anyone who plays as a bunker, would you actually play your bunk spec and hold a point if you knew you would get the points for kills on the other side of a map? It’s gotta be better then the current ring a rosy that goes on with node swapping all game.

I think a “ticking” Glory system is not the way to go either. Look to some other games. SWTOR has a terrible system which is individual medal based and has its own issues. WoW credits everyone “roughly” the same amount of honor per player. That game has bots, buts that’s due to their gear system, not their honor system.

Anyway, u got a better idea then throw it up.
