Sure, I can speculate. I don’t think arena net intends to change it at the core mechanic level because of the other game types (PvE and WvW). Anet likes to keep thier ducks in a row with all game modes the same at the mechanic level. Down state works in PvE, as far as I understand anyway with my limited PvE exposure, and outside of some number tweaking I think it will remain relatively the same.

Can we agree that PvE and PvP are separate in the fact that PvE places a bias on the player to be better than the environment, while PvP is wavering? Assuming you agree, do you think it’s fair to condone both play types to the same endowment?

As to my opinion? I’m kind of in the not fussed section. I see its good points and bad points. It does an ok job in organized team play but is woeful in pug play. I would prefer changes to some of the down state abilities per class and the stomp mechanic but that’s just me.

Not trying to pick on you, but do you think the good points outweigh the bad?

How does it do an “ok” job in organised play but not disorganized? Could it be that it’s because organised play generally takes better advantage of the associated pros and cons likely due to… well, better organisation?

Hmm. You raise good points, but I do think it falls on deaf ears around here. Is it fair to condone both play styles to the same endowment? Probably not but it does lend consistency and makes the PvE to PvP transition easier, which is what Anet is all about.

I like the downstate when it’s used as a b utter against burst builds, and whn other players actually get out of thier tunnel vision and revive players back up. Those rally moments where you just get back up and then score a kill are fun times. When you get into downstates and sit there until you die tho……. It can be frustrating. It also makes the attacker stop to stomp, sacrificing mobility or makes him leave you to be revived by team mates.

Sometimes it works, other times it doesn’t. Like I said, I’m not too fussed.

Ruler, thank you for your feedback; I’m glad you were able to critically question the routine, and I agree that the downed state simply cannot compete with prevalent play in its current form; based on the lack of depth.

Valkyriez, without bashing Arena Net, can you speculate as to why the downed state won’t, or likely will not receive any substantial changes?
Also, (if you care to mention), do you have any weighty opinion about the overall value of the state itself?

I hate stealth stomps and used to hate quickness stomps. Other people loved them, each to thier own. As a Guardian main at the time I had access to neither so there was my bias.

I can’t really be bothered argueing the point, but downstate threads have been done to death in this forum since beta.

Some like it, some hate it and some don’t care either way.

The important thing to remember, is that Arena net loves it and I highly doubt it or any part of downstate and how it works will change besides very minute adjustments.

Best get used to it and roll with it, they won’t change it regardless IMO.

Should be seasonal. If you finish in the top % (insert number here) you are awarded with a title for that season.

Yes, just like WoW. But with a decent solo que system, less volatile ratings and appropriate rating decay, it’s more than feasable and a great incentive for very little dev time IMO.

Depends on the map really. Some require mobility, others require z axis mobility more and others require heavy team fight utility/damage.

If you can help wipe a team at the start of any match you are halfway to winning the match.

Dueling is relatively fun. Making a mode for it is a bit of a waste of time though. There just needs to be a bunch of 2 people max servers and control points turned off and people can have at it.

Custom servers might do the trick, but not if there is any kind of financial barrier to using them.

Not a good idea. As soon as you are losing, just get someone to leave and it’s effectively a null game.

The person leaving however should get a rating panelty and a decent time lockout.

Don’t cater to the minority. DC ‘s are pretty rare and shouldn’t be a concern.

A hefty panelty is a good thing In competitive game modes for people that bail.

It’s different in MOBA’s because you can just farm all game and 1v5 the whole enemy team in the end.

Something to be said for this. in a moba a much stronger player in the lane can outclass and outgear his rivals. Leading to a mechanical advantage later on the game that might allow one to carry. this is not true in gw2.

Whilst that is true, in end phase if your team can hold them out you will eventually catch up. It just depends on the snowball.

Solo que would work in this game to a degree if it was split from teams with an effective MMR.

Honestly, this type of comment is indicative of no knowledge on PvP.

Go look at some MoBAs. Solo queuing in a ranked environment works fine. It just doesn’t work here because of a variety of reasons I can’t be bothered listing at the moment.

To be fair League of Legends went 9 months (Oct 2009 – July 2010) before getting ranked matches where we could see ELO and the separate rating ladders (5v5 teams, solo/duo queue, 3v3). I know we all wish it was in on day 1 but lets be realistic. These guys all want the best things for the game too and its not like they disagree with it.

Just takes time.

Ele and Engie already sounds pretty good. Good healing, AoE, direct damage, conditions, boons and conditions.

You have probably nailed one of the best duos already, keep at it.

I personally like hybrid dps guardian with hybrid dps Ele. Some great combos there.

Ironically I am on the same bandwagon. How can wildstar launch with a full rating system, ELO, a LFG feature and 2v2 , 3v3 and 5v5 arena system and be published by NCSoft and GW2 can’t get a leaderboard together (that works properly).

Hopefully it will fill the time until mid next year or so when ArenaNet has a handle on what they want PvP to actually be and where it should go.

“Every waking moment” isn’t needed, reasonable decay is. 10 tPvP games a week minimum is fair. Keeps people moving up and down and stops stagnation.

Your testers got it wrong. You dont decide the mode, you should have released several modes and let the community decide by playing which is the most competitive. Than you develop from there.

That makes no sense. I would assume that the % means the top percentile. I.e at 90% you are in the top 90 percentile but that’s pretty far away. I could be completely wrong. What % are top ten players getting? I’m at 80% but not in the top 1000.

As pointed out, in tournaments a Mesmer has no condition removal. I used to run arcane thievery and null field for this very reason, but its just not enough for the trade off from portal and other utilities, shatter or phantasm spec irregardless.

Lets be honest, it’s pretty plain to see. The implementation and support for a solo que is overwhelming. The lack of it, and the system of putting pug players against teams is driving people away from playing tournaments and will only be a negative impact In the long run.

I’m one of those players that has given it away until a split happens. Pugging against teams in a ranking environment is just bad practice and frustrating.

Naysayers can argue that que times will go up, but they will go up regardless if the split does t happen sooner then later anyway as the pug population in tPvP declines and moves back into hotjoin or quits all together.

Both teams and solo players need a competitive outlet Independant of each other. Until that happens its arguable that population can sustain itself.

Well, after trying it out for a good while, I’m done. The leaderboards are a great step in the right direction, but not implementing a team and a solo que that’s seperated has me pulling my hair out. I’m all for making a team, but waiting for your team to log on and not a ring to solo que due to hitting teams all night is t much chop.

I’ll be back when the devs get it on track. They are getting there, but not near enough for me.

And the trait for your F3 to drop 3 conditions aswell, passive condi removal every 10 secs and depending on weapon choice, a symbol will grant a boon and tht will remove a condition (I think, it’s been a while).

At this point, the lack of a division between team and solo que is hurting the game. The population will adjust to having both que systems, but only one side, the team players, will get enjoyment out of the current system. If it continues we will be back to the old paid problems, not enough teams and solo players not interested.

Implement the division now or very soon and things will get better, mark my words. If not, then the new found sPvP population boost will dwindle again.

For starters, I don’t play bunker at all. I play a build considered non viable by anyone who plays at a higher level in tournament PvP.

Secondly, your idea is still terrible. I’m sorry, but it just is. Rating performance In a match based on points scored just isnt indicative of skill, it’s more indicative of opportunity and the situation.

With a matchmaking rating that works the only thing that matters is whether you win or lose, your aggregate MMR for your team and the aggregate MMR for the opposing team, values shift accordingly.

It’s how every other Esport team game does it with a solo que system whether that be a MOBA or MMORPG (not that there are any other Esport MMORPG’s, but wow’d RBG system comes to mind here no matter how broken the mechanics of them are).

An effective Elo system should result in as accurate as rankings possible, not who killed the most people or died the less in a match. That’s a FPS thing, K/D ratios and all that.

I honestly think the player base can support the split. With an additional ladder for teams, the team scene should thrive and they would have thier competitive outlet. With a dedicated solo que, solo players would have a fair match each and every game if the MMR is working and relatively stabilized.

More people would solo que if they were t worried about thier rating that they use in thier team going down the drain from you guessed it, being beaten by a team.

That sounds terrible. This is a conquest game mode, where sometimes you need to take a death for the team to hold up a cap, stop a roamer or bust an orb Zerg.

As much as Mesmer has been done to death, I would love to see an analysis on it but in particular focus on when and where to use time warp and the use of portal effectively.

Changes to orb Mechanics and what classes can do with holding the orb are a good idea, removing the whole map is just out right idiotic.

It does make sense though, if the matchmaking is effective and working. The split does need to happen, I agree with that. Teams shouldn’t be farming solo players, but outside that, a solo player leaderboard based on Elo and wins/losses works fine in plenty of Esports games because the statistics support it.

Smite, LoL etc can all make it work and thats not that different to sPvP at the core for tournament PvP. Most matches rely on the teamwork as a group, an all solo match has the issue for both teams, working together without VoIP. Good players will always rise to the top because they can react to the situation at hand.

Admittedly, the current format isn’t very good because solo players are just getting crushed by teams.

There alot of confusion about leaderboards right now. Simply put, they only started gathering rating data since the late February patch and only win/loss data to disagree since the march patch (tad confusing). Everything prior to that is irrelevant regarding placement so that includes the old paid tournaments and free tournies.

At this moment, a reset would be horrendous. It’s bad enough as it it and already ranking is as volatile as can be. The best thing you can do is just keep playing and winning from now on.

I would expect a reset to come if seasonal ladders come in or the feature of team and solo tournaments come in and there’s seperated leaderboards for each one.

J Sharp is doing a FAQ on it now, hopefully it’s out soon to clear up the confusion.
