It’s possible, but unlikely. There wasn’t enough time between me being kicked from the roster to the leader loading into the match. Maybe he was trolling me and got an instant pop, but considering how common 4v5s are at the moment I think it’s more likely to be a problem with the roster system.

It was exactly as Cunning said it was, as per the screenie. I was the roster leader, invited him, submitted then the match popped. We were down 5v4.

If I was trolling him, and didn’t invite him, then he wouldn’t have been on the roster. Then the game would have put a different solo player in there.

So, after my initial reaction to the patch, I’ve played some solo queue and I can’t help to think we are so close to being at the mecca. I find these few things are all we need to be at that happy place:

  • Show that MMR yo. I lift weights not for the fun of it, but to see how much my glutes are improving. Do you even lift?
  • Get a system in that insures that I never face another premade in solo queue. 1s a company, 2s a crowd, 5 is a lopsided falcon punch.
  • Punish those that leave or DC or die IRL before the queue pops. You don’t want to “punish those with a legitimate reason they left queue” yet, you punish 3 or 4 other people instead because they are now partaking in a 1 map molestation.
  • Make Elementalist a bit less…um…godly? Atheists are starting to doubt they even exists.

Awesome post Fel, laughed my kitten off at the “Lopsided Falcon Punch”. But you’re points are spot on. I made a post asking A-net what the advantages are of an invisible MMR was, I cant see how that has any pro’s over a visible MMR. Considering they have said Leaderboards are coming “soon”, surely thier plans is to make the MMR visible or how can you have leaderboards?

One point to add, I’ve only seen it once but the way Ele’s can RTL to the orb and pick it up before I’m even out of my spawn is an issue. Make the Orb spawn after 10 seconds would be a good idea.

Oh, and Arena-Net, your new map rocks. Go back and tweak the other maps slightly or add a CTF mechanic to the lot of them if you have to. Spirit Watch is the most fun I’ve had in ages.

I think they shouldn’t split solo queu from pre-made for several reasons.

1. You didn’t give it a single week to balance it self out. Pre-made will get higher rating then you very fast, because they obviously win more.

2. When u get high rating yourself it doesn’t really matter, your whole team will play well, so will theirs. Their only advantage is the fact that they can choose proffessions for their team.

3. Now that solo join just got here, this is YOUR perfect time to go premade. You will have the advantage over the enemies and will gain rating yourself fast.

My point is that it looks like u want to split this because you can’t/refuse to find a party. I allways join with at least 3 people to greatly improve our succes.

Your first point completely defeats your whole argument.

Don’t split the que because premade a will naturally win more and gain higher rating then you?

Why not split the two so each que type gains its own rating on its own two feet? Not rating inflation for premade a due to beating solo que players.

Invisible rating

Hi,
Admittedly, I haven’t logged in since the patch but I was wondering if a cluey player or a developer could pop in and shed some light for me on the matchmaking system.

What is this invisible rating? Don’t get me wrong, I understand what it is, it’s a MMR that’s hidden from the players and is used to pair players up of similar skill levels in matches. What I mean is, what is an advantage of an invisible rating and how do I, as a player, even know it is working as intended?

I’ve played a fair few games at a competitive level, and all of them have had a visible ELO or GLICKO rating system. As far as I understand MMR, even GW1 had a visible rating system. What is the advantage of an invisible system? Does close matches mean that the rating system is working? Does a match blow out mean that either the team fell apart or maybe the rating of each player had a higher gap then intended due to a lower pool of players?

I know that wow arena had a ranking and a MMR in the background, that didn’t necessarily match up. You could win 10 straight matches, and your ranking was 1500 or so but your MMR Might be near 2k due to the teams you were beating etc.

So my final question, do I have to keep track of my win/loss by myself to gauge whether my invisible MMR will be rising or falling? Or do I rely on the fact that if I hover around 50-60% win ratio then my rating is indeed in full effect and I am being matched with equally skilled players?

And lastly but not least, what is a single disadvantage to a visible rating system that I can see go up and down post every match? If you, arena net, have decided on an invisible MMR, what was it that you didn’t like about a visible rating similar to the one that was apparently in GW1? What exactly was the cons of visible and the pros of hidden?

I’m just a bit baffled and unless I get an answer that makes an iota of sense, I don’t see why I should log in and do any tournaments if there isn’t a visual indicator of skill/rating progression.

Not a rage post, just seeking some clarification.

It’s actually a good idea. 2v1 should always slowly decrease the cap and neutralise it then eventually cap it. Force the enemy team to respond, and the bunker to actually do something bar cycle knock backs, stability etc.

Would also promote balanced builds, that can be defensive yet still dish out levels of damage.

Tickets buy chests, how does one use the chests to buy rank?

And pretty sure once patch drops, you not be able to buy tickets anymore because they will be redundant, hence the Chet buyback.

Thieves in SPVP where culling issues are non-existent are absolutely fine.

Thieves in WvW where they can nail you for their burst, render for .5 seconds (if you’re lucky) before stealthing again due to culling issues are insanely broken and stupid.

Please clarify which area of pvp you are talking about, OP.

When smite goes live it is going to blow this game out of the water. They already have ranked solo and team que, unranked arena, conquest, domination and 1v1 and sponsors, tournaments and the Esports infrastructure to back it all up.

Smite is a MOBA. GW2 is an MMO. Smite will have about the same effect LoL had on WoW.

Different games sure, but the infrastructure shouldn’t be any different between competitive Esport games.

Smite doesn’t need to compete with GW2 due to different game type, it doesn’t need to compete at all. GW2 has killed the game itself.

And to be honest, for pure pvp players, the difference between Smite and GW2 would be negligible. Both have no gear grinds, both are in 3 rd person, both are about team play in the5v5 format etc. the moba gameplay style is different, sure. But Smites domination with 3 point capture and hold is almost identical to GW2 conquest mode, only better.

This is of dire importance!

Pretty sure GW2 will be at PAX East, but any chancy you guys are doing a trip down under for a visit to Pax Aus, the first time PAX has come to Australia and it would be great to see the GW2 team there showcasing some gameplay stuff upcoming in 2013 and 2014.

Play a different pvp game for the next 12 months and feel better about it.

A few expansions could do this game the world of good, but that’s what it needs. 18 months or so and plenty of dev attention then it could bounce back hard. Until then…….. You’re wasting you’re gaming hours if you want real, measurable competition.

Lack of a Power progression is not the reason GW2 is failing at all.

- scrap tournaments
- implement a Solo/Duo que and Team que options with their own separate respective ladders with visible matchmaking and ladders
- Update the UI to be able to party or solo que into either mode from anywhere within the game
-scrap hot-join and the paid scene. Implement unranked/ranked versions of the solo/team que
-add some more game modes even if they are only unranked and conquest stays the ranked gamemode (2v2, 3v3 TDM, CTF like the snowball mayhem etc)
-find something that isn’t economy breaking to make money from glory or a token of some description that you only get from winning matches in either solo or team que. Ranked gives more tokens of course.
- in general, just make the game a bit more about competition and fun. It just isn’t sustainable in its current form. More players leave then come in.
- Dueling system, whatever it may be.

Really people shouldn’t use stream numbers as an indication of much. Its better people playing than watching the game. And there are technical issues with twitch which are effecting alot of the smaller unpartnered channels. Twitch seems to be struggling to cope with the massive demand from league stream/tournaments and this is making most of their other streams unwatchable for a large number of people.

What a load of rubbish. gW2 has steadily declined in its viewership on twitch over the last few months due to disinterest from non players and players alike, just like the sPvP scene. It has nothing to do with technical difficulties at all and has more to do with the one game mode, stagnant competitive scene and no “end state” I.e a lack of any ranking / ladder.

You can put lock of monetization for top players on that list as well. They make money from viewers’ no viewers = no cash for them in this games pvp scene.

Hello all!
First of all, I want to say it’s been interesting reading the sPvP forum for the last month or so. To be honest, I havent logged in in a month or so purely because I lost interest and I wanted to chime in on the solo que debate.

I have a link here, its a bit old, but is a dev post from Arena Net specifically from Evan Leash. https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/SPvP-mode-question/first#post1172235

This post isnt exactly interesting, what is interesting is that Evan has obviously heard of Smite and this post was the reason I stopped logging into GW2. This post directed me to a game I am currently playing. Some of you might have heard about it, if you have, thats great. If you havent, then maybe you might learn something from this.

Gameplay differences aside, this game has some excellent systems working in the background and like GW2, is probably on par population wise (it’s still in open beta, expect the population to boom at release though).

I would love for Arena-net to consider the queing and segregation system from Smite. How it works is that you have ranked and unranked games or termed “Casual and Competitive”. The casual options include the standard conquest que (lets assume this is the que for GW2’s conquest mode). This que system, and all like it are on a timer of sorts. Every 4 minutes the que pops and it places all players that are que’d into a match. This is such a good way to do it IMO because it allows the most players to be in the matchmaking pool at the time of matchmaking instead of a “first in first served” system where its very possible to que into the same people all day long.

The “casual” que does the same matchmaking algorithm’s that Arena net is currently considering for thier ranked system. If you que solo, it tries to match solo players with you on both your team and enemy teams. Same for duo, trio and above players. It attempts to match them with likeminded premade groups.

The competitive scene is a bit different. The game mode is on a 10 minute timer, but Smite games are a bit longer so its possible that Arena Net could bring that timer down to 5 minutes and adjust as appropriate. The “Conquest” has 2 ways of queing, “Solo” and “Team”. There are seperate ladders for both. I know I am just repeating what has been mentioned already by plenty of you, but this system really works well, especially with the set times for matchmaking. Sure, some players may miss out at the matchmaking, but the system makes you a priority to match in the next matchmaking.

You could easily substitute the Hotjoin system for the Casual que, and Paid system for the Competitive que. With ladders for both Solo players and Team players, its a great way to find teams, and top solo players alike. Smite also has a “Custom” feature for Jousting (1v1, which isnt really applicable for GW2 unless it was to become a casual dueling feature) and also custom team games. You simply que as a team, then invite another team and both teams start a game and bob’s ya uncle, skirmishes donw. If these type of systems were brought in, and accessible from the UI without having to be in the Mists (like, solo queing and doing WvW or PvE etc whilst in the 10 min wait time) then it would be much more accessible for everyone.

You can already que into a WvW area from anywhere in the game, so the tech is there Arena-net. You have it in your hot little hands. This wouldnt split the playerbase, this would increase it exponentially.

On a last note, I do think the competitive que could accommodate upto a maximum of Duo queing in addition to the Solo que.

Monetization can come from Skins, glory boosters etc.

Ive attached screenis of what I’m talking about. I really, really like GW2 and want to play it again. But until I can play with little to no fuss and be competitive with a ladder without having to wait for 5 people to be online all the time, or que solo into a premade like you do now, I will stick to Smite. I would love to see what a big developer like A-net could do with a system like this and expand on it.

Some of you might remember in SWTOR that Bioware put on a “Guild Summit”. They invited guild eladers and some random players from all over the world to attend where they showcased up and coming features, systems and gameplay enhancements. Now, admittadly SWTOR died a horrible death, but the idea was sound, its just a matter of the developers and publishers following through on things showcased.

Is there room or scope for a publisher like Arena Net to do a"Guild Summit" and live stream it and release the VOD’s onto youtube in the first quarter 2013?

All these systems you have on your plate A-Net, invite players to come check it out.

Sounds nice, but i never particularly liked GW1 so I would be useless.

Goodluck though. I am thinking of trying to organise a 3v3 tournament here in GW2 for NA players. I’m oceanic myself, but fri/sat nights in NA are Sat/Sun arvo’s for me, so I could get around that.

Need some sort of prize/sponsorship though and thats the part that takes effort. No point doing it if the turnout isn’t worth it. I would stream it aswell.

A team vs team game mode seems silly unless there’s some sort of official ladder or rating or otherwise a real reward attached to it. Custom servers will make it obsolete quickly as teams will have their own servers for scrims.

If you want a bandaid fix to increase the amount of high level play, decrease the amount of tickets you need to play paids so it does not take too long for teams on a losing streak to play.

Don’t waste your (very limited) time on a new feature that will quickly become obsolete.

Pretty sure you misread it mate. I read it as the 1v1 team matches having the Matchmaking rating associated with them and as such will be the driving force for the leaderboards.

If it’s like 1 ticket to do a 1v1 team match, thats not all too bad. You are right in one part though, if the 1v1 team matches has the rating and leaderboard associated with them it will kill off the paid and possibly free tournament scene, which is a glorious thing.

Solo/Duo que system…… It’s a must have and the primary reason other games without it struggle (see SWTOR ranked war zones scene).

Point still stands, you come off as an elitist moron who has nothing to back up their claims. The game has balance issues, anyone claiming otherwise needs to wise up. What those issues are is a point for discussion, unless you are suggesting this is somehow a magical game that is perfectly balanced, something which no MMO has ever been able to do, let alone a 6 months from launch.

Vain also states that more classes need skill shots, time warp needs to be changed so that its not so essential in 5v5 and particularly team fights (I.e it needs a smaller radius and a negative effect) and Vain also thinks Portal should be changed to be used by the Mesmer and Mesmer only.

“1 team vs. 1 team. Like with other things, I was going to do a more robust blog on this later, but we are doing this. We will be testing out Temple of the Silent Storm for tournament rotation play by doing a 1 team vs. 1 team setup (as opposed to the 8 team setup we use in tournaments). This will mean only two teams play, one wins, one loses. It will cost less to enter these 1on1 matchups than tournaments, but rewards will also be scaled down. You won’t have to go multiple rounds, and once a match is over, both teams can jump right back into the pool. So overall, compared to tournaments, it will have less rewards, but it’s quicker to play and easier to get into/out of. We’ll be testing this system in the near future to see how it works, and if feedback is positive, we may look at trying to incorporate the 1on1 format into PvP. We know that free tournaments are going almost all the time, but we recognize that paid tournaments are having some issues right now, so have been listening to you and have made plans to improve the experience. You guys have made some great suggestions, and a lot of your ideas are in alignment with the things propounded in our internal meetings. So thank you for all your passion and suggestions!”

First of all, thanks for the info. When you mention that Temple will become part of the rotation, I assume you mean in addition to the current competitive maps, not by itself as the only map for the team v team mode.

Is it possible that you have thought of disabling tournaments, both free and paid whilst the player base tests the 1 team vs 1 team mode? This should funnel all competitive players into this mode to really test the matchmaking and see its effectiveness.

After a period of time, release tournaments for set times of the day and utilise the matchmaking that players have acquired through the 1 team v 1 team modes as a way of matching players in said tournaments.

Will the team v team mode be like paids? No pug players, have to be a team to que up for it and will only match other teams?

This is a great time to implement a solo/duo que mode, with the I build matchmaking to face other solo/duo players, and gives team players who don’t have a full team online a chance to improve their postal matchmaking rating.

Just some things to consider. The addition of custom servers is a great way to go for 3rd party organised competitions, but what we need to know is not that they are coming, but how much they will cost and I portably, can we turn the control nodes off?

3rd party competitions are more flexible if we can set it as a deathwatch and builds/team compositions can be better tailored to suit.

My net is down so I also haven’t played in a week and a bit. I really miss playing, but when I stopped free tournaments had a hour long que after 10pm and not much better before 10pm. I’m worried that when I get back a free tourney won’t pop at all.

Now it turns to stupidity. No classes should be deleted. Besides some silly mechanics the balance of the game could t be better and would be much more enjoyable with a few tweaks.

Quickness as a boon might be the underlying problem of itself. It’s a very strong boon, which normally has a negative effect when used by most classes, except for some reason a group AoE quickness that lasts 10 seconds……….

Add the frenzy negative effect and right there it would take more thought on when to use it as it could wipe your team out.

Anyway, mesmers love it cause its a guaranteed spot in any tourney team, regardless of thier build. All they need is portal and time warp and they are in.

Why would anyone want to implement random world pvp in the quest areas? There is sPvP and WvW. It makes no sense to change either of those systems for a couple of scrubs who like to gank questers and PvE carebears.

Put down your pitchforks and put your tin foil hat back on. I don’t know much about arena nets plan, but I do I know this kitten idea will never even be contemplated by them.

You can’t run a team without Mesmer for time warp alone. It’s too game changing. Smaller radius and a negative effect (refer to latest SOTG comments by Vain) and it would go a long way to making teams more varied.

And change portal to single use by the Mes only.

Game just needs a TDM mode that is 2v2 or 3v3. You can solo/ duo que agai st others that do the same, or team que into other teams. Balance will sort itself out, re assess it in 3 months.

Most people are just bored at the moment mate. It’s got varied factors for each individual, but most pvp players in my friends list just get thier fix in WvW now and have moved on from sPvP.

Call it balance, game mode, lack of solo/duo que, tournament set up etc. I would love it if I could just sign up to a tourney from the UI instead of having to go to the mists. With the wait times, I get so bored waitin for a tourney to pop.

Balance is not that bad, it’s the effort it takes on some classes opposed to others. Some changes to class mechanics to include more skill shots instead of a set rotation or button spam to achieve the same result would go a long way to making the combat feel like there is more depth to it.

Just my 2 cents, you are all free to argue that it’s balance killing this game all you want.

I can see the pros and cons of a public VoIP.

If its an easy system to implement and didn’t take away from an already very scarce development resources, the fine. It does need to have stringent controls though, like mute buttons for individual players, a “report” functionality which means there needs to be server recording going on and it also needs to be relatively easy and seamless to use.

I say a report functionality is needed because its the only way of deterring the narcissism of immature players. Just right click, report for inappropriate behavior, mute and move on. Arena net is pretty strict from what I’ve seen, repeat offenders won’t last long and they wouldn’t be missed anyway.

The public VoIP functionality would definitely add to the enjoyment of pug games if your pugs on VoIP with you aren’t the aforementioned uncosiae angry Tweens. This should t take place over the need for a solo/duo que though, in fact, they would work hand in hand if done right.

Would be nice, and at the same time useless. If the game had all the other stuff needed, then yeah, sure. But at the moment the limited developer time needs to be spent on more robust and attractive PvP systems rather then just a stats page to look at.

By tomorrow we will have more information and by march some additional systems should be in play. If Mr Sharp listened to the latest SOTG there was some really good feedback there, all it needs is development time and player patience, which both seem in short supply.

Yeah, I didn’t like Forge but some people are sadaists and will love it. Half an hour ink knew it must be made by old school wow rogue glad players, it’s just a stunlock feet for stealth classes.

SMITE…… I have a beta key and have given it a go. The arena part sounds like it could be aight but I hate moba’s. too much PvE in the pvp if you I ow what I mean. Towers, creeps etc. I dislike that rubbish.

Straight up arena on it would be cool though.

I would love to see a “Guild/Team” summit done by arena net similar to what happened with SWTOR after release. All though that game sunk faster the. The titanic, a 1st quarter of 2013 summit where they invited teams from all over to take place in a summit, showcase up and coming features, how they will work and cost with timelines and get player feedback would be fantastic.

It’s a bit twitchy for me but it does have a niche role. Another one is Bloodlines Champions, all though I have t seen it around for a while but it had a cult following at one time.

Or stay with GW2, once more systems are in place this game will rock.

“Tonnes of people”. The weight of 100 people is bound to be a few tonne:).

Regardless, it isn’t a troll thing, it really is dropping. I play oceanic, and we can’t play paid tournaments, that’s an NA prime time deal. We now can’t play Free tournaments after oceanic 10pm, that’s dried up aswell.

All 100 people smashing it out in hot join does not make this a thriving game. Doomsday predictions can be a bit over the top, but without a few small features that the community is screaming for, it will not grow any further and continue to dwindle, regardless of how low that dwindle it is, it is still a dwindle.

Game devs want growth not decay.
