Hey all,
Been a while since I played. Quick question is all, last time I played you were stuck in HoTM when queued for Ranked games and it was mind numbing to just cut laps all day long. The wiki now states you can que up for for ranked whilst out doing zones etc, can someone confirm for me?

Another question, how’s Guardian going competitively? I like playing Bunker, DH, Burn Guard etc, is it holding up allrite or just not worth bringing?

Had 3 games in a row with a ranger on my team who must have been wearing a zerker amulet. Every single engagement he died in 1 hit, a single hit pretty much put him in a down state. I asked him to try out Marauders or Paladins and was ignored. Had a Rev on my team who ran Herald but wouldn’t put the toggles on for any swiftness, might or fury, just never used the utilities.

As for matches, more horror stories then I’d like to admit. I’m an upbeat guy, balance doesn’t really bother me and I’m in Emereld now but the wins I’ve had have all been by over 300 points, get 2 or 3 in a row then get on a loss streak of 7 or 8 in a row and none of those my team scores over 100 points. I understand how the system works, but the inconsistency in the matches and the competitiveness has me at a loss on what to do.

I’m by no means an exceptional player. I kitten, win some, lose some. Getting 2 pips for breaking a loss streak then losing 4 more and making the double pip redundant the. Breaking that loss streak and the. Another 3 losses in a row etc makes it all feel kind of pointless.

I hated the Amber shopping last season, but once they changed that the system was pretty good IMO. Extra pips for a good win, no pips lost for a close loss etc. even if they took away the ability to gain a pip from a loss on the old system I would have been far happier.

As it stands, I log in, take my 3 losses in a row, then log off. Rinse and repeat every few hours.

So the only way to get better MMR is to not play right now?! that’s madness. is MMR ever cleared? like a fresh start? its sounds like they are forcing the responsibility of the other 4 people of team actions on to me. solo queuing I don’t know them, I have no say how they play, why am I punished for their indiscretions? if I was on a premade team, that would be fair enough, but not solo.

MMR is also class based. So you could change to a new class at some point if you want a fresh MMR. Also different MMR for ranked and unranked.

Is MMR class based? I thought it was account based.

How do you fix the meta? I'll show you.

Tbh I just don’t get the damage on chill. Bleed, burn efc is sort of fine, but chill is so loaded now it’s at the top of my death recap everytime. I just don’t think the chill damage is necessary at all, it’s a soft CC and doesn’t need it.

This isn’t even a CC heavy game lol, most CC is so short it’s not even an issue its just for interrupts, decals and stopping a res or stomp. Most other games give you a cc break on a 2 min cd lol, we have stability which eats a cc per stack and it’s pretty easy to get into your build somehow or from a team mate.

The “omg so much cc” is hyperbole at best.

The issue is that CC effects are short duration yet they can be continuously used over and over. There are many situations where you can cleanse or use stability, but then a few seconds later you are hit by these effects again.

Also, professions and weapon and skill and trait designs were made for pve in mind. You have to look at the bigger pictures.

I do look at the big picture, and I’ve got a few games under my belt to know that CC isn’t really an issue. Whilst CC is rather plentiful, a lot of it is soft CC and stability is t exactly hard to find in 90% of builds and use it at the right time. The game is about capturing points, i.e knocking people off those points to capture it. It’s a required mechanic and works pretty well. There’s more then just stability, blind, block, aegis, dodge roll etc to avoid cc effects.

Every build should have a stability source (except thief I think), a condi cleanse and a stun break. That’s the trade off each player has to make to fit those into the build.

Ok, so I tried ranked PvP today.

On average I win one game out of 20. All other 19 games I lose with a devastating score 150 v 500 tops, sometimes less.

I’m level 20 in PvP and I win about 60-70% unranked games, so I’m not the worst PvP player for my level and I do not believe that my underperformance could cause such dramatic shift in score.

If the matchmaking system had matched people of the same level randomly into groups, the results would’ve been more like 50/50, 1 out of 20 is far off from any logic.

What your experience with Ranked PvP system has been?

If your PvP rank is level 20, you have only just stepped into ranked for the first time. The skill curve is much much steeper in ranked in general. You probably have less then 100 games total and unless they are on 1 class then you are still learning the very basics at the moment. Keep at it, it can only get better.

It’s not that bad. I’ve lost 3 and won 4 so far. Had a thief in foefire “lost” at start of a match cause he said he’d never played this map before, made me chuckle a fair bit. Got belted, least it was quick.

either way it doesn’t help the solo player. There needs to be a true solo queue; no groups not even a group of two.

It’s been asked for ages to make it possible, hasn’t happened and isn’t going to happen or it would have already. The only way it would work if there was only 2 ques, solo only and full team only, there isn’t enough 3 man and 2 man teams for a 3rd que and for matchmaking to work, and if they made it 2 ques only, the amount of “why can’t I just duo with a friend” whinges would be astronomical.

I agree wholeheartedly. It is infinitely clear that I am not a good enough Mesmer to carry a team. Probably, there are few if any players who are, given the current state of Mesmer.

Your call to “stop crying” is inspirational. I know that my heart swelled with renewed courage and resolve, reading those golden words. The originality and brevity are absolutely breathtaking.

No, of course it’s not appropriate to want to play a class and/or style that the player enjoys. Beyond doubt, the proper course is to ignore personal enjoyment or preference and simply play whatever build wins most consistently and easily.

I’ve played 3 ranked matches today, all 3 had skilled Mesmer condi players wrecking face in them. I’d say you need to adjust your attitude.

I have to say, the nerfs to Mesmer were fully justified, carefully thought out and implemented in a manner worthy of a multimillion dollar company.

Further, anet has once again upheld it’s widely acknowledged reputation for fair and even handed treatment of all players, wether it be in-game or on forums.

The pvp in this so far shows the beneficial effects of the careful, frequent and iterative adjustments that make this game so much fun for everyone involved.

Clearly, permitting the ESL Pro League players have such a strong influence on balance has been beneficial. They have been demonstrably even handed. They’ve suggested changes that benefit not only there own preferred classes and playstyles, but accommodated everyone in a very egalitarian manner.

You make it sound like ESL players wanted Mesmer pushed out of the meta, when during the season every Pro League team had two of them. Seems a bit backwards that they would somehow have an agenda to be rid of the class that was existent as 40% of every team.

I believe the system is making matches in favor of a high stacked experienced team vs a team stacked with not experienced people (sometimes 1 or 2 shuffled in the losing team), just as people have long losing streaks, these also happen as well.

You have over 1300 ranked PvP wins. You are being matched with similar MMR players on your team against a random pool of other Amber players, of course you should be winning consitently and progressing very fast……. It’s the whole point of the new matchmaking system.

The OP has 350 wins from almost 900 games prior to S2, i.e almost a 30-35% win ratio, he is being matched with others around his MMR and thrown against a random pool of Amber players in his division which are clearly better then him. Those average players will move on, and he will play against other sub 50% win/loss players until he starts to advance, once again as intended by the matchmaking system.

Another thing to consider is that the majority of builds have their own source of swiftness/movement enhancement runes/traits.

I can’t think of a single build that doesn’t.

Any Guardian build including DH without traveler rune set.

Slow as molasses.

Is say that Reddit gets far more traction and exposure then these forums ever would and there’s no pvp specific forum, where as the subreddit can be pvp specific.

Whilst getting to legendary solo sounds nice and is definitely commendable, I don’t care for it as much as I would just getting to Ruby with a team. Playing with a team is much more fun then achieving a bit higher on a ladder for me, but I’m Aussie so finding a team in my timezone is borderline impossible.

Season 2 is looking really good IMO. I got 2 X DH characters ready to go, different builds and roles on both and that’s all I’ll play I reckon. I’m excited to see how the matches will change based on division, what sort of “meta” if any will be in Amber/Emereld and then what pops up in the Ruby/Diamond divisions.

I dont like class stacking restriction, since with 1 class you can make so many variations and builds that in the end it can look like 2 seperate classes. With class restriction you are eliminating this diversity.

See? This right here is a perfect example of what I mean. I’m not picking on you here Emapudapus, what I mean is in your opinion you don’t like stacking restrictions, and some other people really want them. There is no consensus, and likely will never be. You raise a good point aswell. A Bunker Guard, GS Burn Guard and Trap DH are all the same class, but completely different builds. Restricting classes makes little sense in this scenario, but class stacking is problematic in other ways.

The Grand Guardian Overhaul Part 1

I think we can all agree that with the current balance mentality toward the guardian we are not going to be “meta” anytime soon.
So this is my take on how to improve the guardian to bring him back into the meta with hopefully a lot of build diversity (we are all tired of just playing medi/medi trapper or shouts)
Some of these suggestions may feel OP but in a perfect world these changes would only get through if every other class gets such a big overhaul aswell.

My goals with the guardian in short:
Increase build diversity (power dps, condition dps, support/heal)
Make every weaponset playable (for different roles/build)
rework spirit weapons
update the “role” of the guardian to be sort of the “opposite” of the necromancer

Part 1, Virtues, Utilities and Weapons
Part 2

Let’s start with the basics: Virtues:

  • Virtue of Justice (F1): CD reduced to 20 seconds.
  • Virtue of Resolve (F2): CD reduced to 40 seconds, now converts 1 condition into a boon upon activating.
  • Virtue of Courage (F3): CD reduced to 60 seconds. Aegis Refresh rate changed to 20 seconds.

With a bit stronger “vanilla” virtues I want to achieve less dependancy on the Virtues traitline.

Next up: Utility Skills:
Meditations feel pretty good, only skills that need work are

  • Merciful Intervention: Reduced CD to 40, changed text to “Shadowstep to the targeted area and heal around them. If no ally is present in the targeted area, this ability will heal for only 50%.”
  • Litany of Wrath: Doubled the initial self heal.

These changes achieve two things, it creates a bit of choice when going for a meditation build and it gives base guardian a much needed mobility skill.

Shouts:

  • Retreat: CD reduced to 30 seconds.
  • Hold the Line: CD reduced to 30 seconds.
  • Stand your Ground: Stability stacks increased to 10 up from 5.
  • Save Yourselves: Added 10 seconds of Aegis, Stability (1 Stack) and 2 seconds of Resistance.
  • Receive the Light: CD reduced to 35, doubled healing power scaling.
  • Feel my Wrath: CD reduced to 40 seconds.

Retreat and Hold the Line are very basic shouts, that’s why they need a bit lower CD.
Stand your Ground stability increase is mainly because of WvW and the current “cc powercreep” introduced with HoT.
Save Yourselves needed a bit of an update in the boon department.
FMW got a bit overnerfed in my opinion.

Consecrations:

  • Purging Flames: Will now convert 3 conditions into boons upon activation.
  • Hallowed Ground: CD reduced to 60 seconds. Pulsing Stability increased to 3 stacks, will now also pulse resistance for 1 second.
  • Sanctuary: CD reduced to 60 seconds, radius increased to 240, healing per second increased by 100%
  • Wall of Relection: no changes.

Hallowed Ground never really got played, should now be viable in cc and condition heavy environments.
Sanctuary same thing as above, but against heavy melee and ranged pressure.

Signets

  • Signet of Mercy: CD reduced to 90, Radius increased to 600. Active changed to “Revive a nearby downed or dead player” (preference for fully dead players).
  • Signet of Courage: CD reduced to 120 seconds, passive heal halved, pulse intervall halved. Casttime reduced to 4 seconds, active can now be cast while moving and gain 3 stacks of stability upon activation.

Those 2 signets just had to high cd for what they where doing, mercy has now a nice, niche, but powerful role und Courage’s active won’t be interupted that easy. Traits will further improve signets but that will come later.

Now on to Spirit Weapons:
I believe Spirit weapons need a complete overhaul and I have drawn inspiration from the GW1 SW’s from the Ritualist
You and your allies can only have one Spirit Weapon active at the same time.
The SW will attach itself on your real weapon set and won’t have a health bar anymore.
You will loose the SW if you swap weapons.
Every weapon has a distinct role.
Traits will further increase funacionality of the weapon.

  • Weapon of Warding: CD set to 20 seconds, give yourself a Weapon of Warding for 9 seconds which pulses aegis for 2 seconds every 3 seconds and you inflict weakness for 3 seconds with every 5th attack
  • Resilient Weapon: CD set to 20 seconds, give yourself a Resilient Weapon for 9 seconds which pulses resistance for 2 seconds every 3 seconds and you gain “reflection” with every 5th attack for 2 seconds (while under the effects of “reflection” you reflect all incoming missiles back to their source, like sword #3 Zealot’s Defense)
  • Warmongers Weapon:CD set to 20 seconds, give yourself a Warmongers Weapon for 9 seconds which pulses 5 stacks of might for 5 seconds every 3 seconds and inflict 1/2 second of daze with every 5th attack
  • Splinter Weapon: CD set to 20 seconds, give yourself a Splinter Weapon for 9 seconds which pulses fury for 3 seconds every 3 seconds and inflict burning with every 5th attack, also every 3rds attack damage is split into 3 attacks (like sword auto #3)

SW’s will need alot more balancing and tweaking, but that’s the groundwork.

Weapons
Greatsword: Seems pretty well balanced right now, maybe a slight increase in projectile velocity for #5 Binding Blade.

Hammer:

  • AA: Decreased to casttime of Symbol of Protection to 1 second down from 1 1/4
  • Mighty Blow: Increased Base Damage scaling to 2.5 up from 1.75 (same value as True Shot), increased leap range to 480, can now be ground targeted.
  • Zealots Embrace: Increased chain travelspeed by 100%, reduced casttime to 3/4 down from 1 second.
  • Banish: Reduced casttime to 3/4 down from 1 second, CD reduced to 20.
  • Ring of Warding: Can now be cast while moving (same speed as Whirling Wrath)

Staff:

  • Orb of Light: Removed. Added a new Skill: Symbol of Judgment (Downed Skill 3)
  • Empower: Casttime reduced to 2 seconds down from 2 1/2.

Mace:

  • AA: Faithful Strike: Doubled base healing and healing power scaling.
  • Protectors Strike: Will now block for the full duration until hit by a melee attack, can now be manually triggert for AoE Protection.

Sword

  • AA: Sword Wave no longer shots projectiles.
  • Zealots Defense: Can now be cast while moving, upon activation gain “reflection” for 2 seconds.

Scepter

  • AA: Projectile Velocity increased by ~50%, (needs to be tested, goal is to make it not as easily strafable as it currently is)
  • Smite: Is now a Symbol which pulses Fury and cripple for 3 seconds (3 pulses). CD increased to 12, reduced number of impacts to 12 down from 16.

Focus

  • Ray of Judgement: Increased Projectile Velocity by 50%.

Shield:
Base shield is fine, the trait needs an update.

Torch:

  • Cleansing Flame: Will now remove 1 condition from the guardian at the start and the end of the cast.

Part 2, Traits

My goals with the guardian in short:
Increase build diversity (power dps, condition dps, support/heal)

Not to be rude, but theres multiple complkaints about Power Creep and 99% of your suggestions are buffs, like reduced cooldowns, increased coefficients etc. I’m sure I would love all thsoe changes, but 99% would never happen as it would just make Guardian too strong and require reductions afterwards, or other classes would nbeed the same treatment, ala Power Creep.

Yeah, actually the tournaments show a false metagame because teams have to play at least 4 different classes. Probably the actual best composition has 3-4 revenants(note that they can go tankier with traits, runes and paladin’s amulet too).

They should have the same rules as for everyday pvp. Either remove class stacking limit and balance things(<-will never happen) or add the limit to the game. This doesn’t close out the possibility for multiclassing: people could be able to choose from multiple classes they are capable of playing. e.g.:

Entering Queue for Ranked Arena:
—Choose the classes you can play and add a priority to them(1 is highest priority, x means you dont want to play that):

  • [ 1 ] Warrior
  • [x] Revenant
  • [ 3 ] Guardian
  • [x] Thief
  • [x] Engineer
  • [x] Ranger
  • [x] Mesmer
  • [ 2 ] Necromancer
  • [x] Elementalist

Note: Groups are organised with 4 different classes at least with people on their highest priority classes. Once they load in and see what the enemy team is most likely running they can change to one of their lower priority classes if they feel like they get countered(and if they meet the 4 different classes rule). The matchmaking also finds you a group if you can only play your 2nd or 3rd etc priority class.

Note: People wouldn’t be able to log to classes marked with an x. And they automatically load in on the top priority character of theirs if possible. Or to help slow-loaders, first a window pops-up about who plays what in both teams so you can choose what you want to run thus you would only have to load in once.

I’m no programmer but that sounds like a cool idea but a nightmare to write code for. There would be so much backend code need to be written to make it work, identifying priorities etc and then UI design.

I wouldn’t do it if I was a game dev, I’d just lock out class swapping and code in no class stacking which Anet said they can do quite easily but only if there was a big enough consensus for it which there isn’t. You Aus up on a class, you get selected for a match and then can’t change guaranteeing 5 different classes per team which sounds fine to me tbh, no need for counter swapping etc. neither option will happen though because even with the mini amounts of complaints about class stacking in random games, the complaints of class locking would be even greater.

I don’t really care to be honest but now that Andt has the map voting and random roll on it, I highly doubt they wil change it.

Cleric is a healers amulet, there’s no HP on it or precision or ferocity so it does no damage. It’s fine for bunker guards and Elementalist.

Not going to happen. They don’t want power builds with toughness and healing power rolled into a single amulet which makes sense IMO, pick your role instead of trying to be a bruiser with too much sustain.

If anything we need even more amulets removed IMO instead of trying to suggest more being added.

I’d like a lot less feedback from the pros. The have strong biases and personal agendas. ANET ought to be listening to the main player base instead.

The main player base is barely coherent and couldn’t agree on a single class change let alone a multitude of them.

Some people are so jaded it’s depressing. I just finished watching the finals matches and thought it was fantastic. Yes there were some classes missing ( warrior, thief, Guardian, Mesmer and only 1 ranger seen) but it was really interesting to watch.

Side note, I actually loved the lack of portal plays. No portal forced people to get around the map the old fashioned way and rotate properly.

More premade incentives...

The only way to get guild challenger rewards and have even the remote chance to get into ESL is to form a team, that’s incentive enough really.

Every pvp game has a meta, it’s not a new concept. Sometimes players come up with builds that break the meta, and a new meta is formed. That’s just how it is. Now, people can complain about the meta, which really only applies to the top 1% of players or play a build that works for them and do the best they can.
