I spoke to two people at Best Buy today that we’re standing beside me looking at the MMOs. I was thumbing through the GW2 guide, and one of the guys asked me if I ever played it. We got into a conversation and I gave them my honest opinion about the game. They said they had heard similar things from other people. While we were talking, another guy came up and said he quite GW2 the other day as well. That was 10 minutes in a random Best Buy.

I did say that it was just MY opinion, but they said when other folks had said the same basic things, there must be some truth to it. I did elaborate on the things i like about GW2, but they said they’d stick with WoW, and also walked away with the new Rift xpac. Word of mouth….

it is like life. you work more, you get more. it isn’t entitled. it is earned.

By this logic a mentally disabled individual should eventually become president if they just work long enough weeks at Goodwill. Sorry, that’s not how life works. In life you get ahead by being smarter and more innovative than others, not by mindlessly devoting your time to monotonous tasks.

^True. It’s like saying….. ‘since I’ve been here the longest, I deserve the promotion’.

Content Locust: How They Change The MMO Gaming Landscape

Someone was kind enough to post it already so I’m going to re-post it in it’s own topic for everyone to see. This kind of information is too valuable to go unnoticed.

We, as a community of Guild Wars 2, need to make sure that these locust don’t further try to drag our beautiful and wonderful world that ArenaNet created, in a direction we don’t want it to go.

Let us be more of a presence in the forums, GuildWars2Guru, Reddit, etc. etc.

Most common fear with this new added tier, to “close the gap” between exotic and legendary gear, will lead to more higher gear stats in the future; leading to a treadmill.

We have the ability to let them know we don’t want it to go in that direction. With the new content The Lost Shores, we can draw the line.

Quite funny when people like you start with name-calling when someone have a different view of a game than you have. To be fair it´s people like you that ruins the game for people that enjoy it. Get the kitten of your high-horse. Just because you played GW1 or whatever doesnt make you any better or more special than the next player. =)

^Agree. Everyone that buys this game has the same right to input/opinion, regardless if it’s different from yours. Now if you paid $500 a copy for your game code, then sure, but I’m pretty sure we all pretty much paid the same money.

To the OP.

I feel ya. I feel much the same way. This game superficially looks amazing…but lacks anything ‘fun’. I put my time in, but after 500 or so hours, I couldn’t force myself to play anymore. I log in to check on my guild, but I don’t do anything in game. The ‘end-game’ has become the forums.

You hit the nail on the head for me. I do not have a character to lvl 80 yet, but for the past three or more weeks, I just couldn’t bring myself to log into the game. I realized when you used the word “superficial”, that hits the nail on the head of GW2 for me. I have illuded to this in past posts by saying my GW2 experience has been like putting on my wetsuit, looking out over a beautiful ocean, only to realize its one foot deep. The first time I logged onto GW2, I thought there is no way I can go back to the cartoony graphics of WoW. Even Rift seemed less pretty. But I’ve found that I miss the WoW and Rift depth of mechanics and have gone back to playing those two games. I guess with GW2 I just expected a deeper, more immersive game. Instead, it feels very “console” to me. I’m all for something different, but being different just for the sake of being different, doesn’t make sense to me if it’s a leap backwards for the genre.

Lack of customization in this game such as UI, limited weapon skills, very poor loot drops all around, lack of detail polish for such small things as graphical preview for trading post items, the difficulty in making gold, lackluster armor and weapons, lack of mounts, poor FOV and camera placement, rabid “fan base”, so many bugs, so many botts, a forum that’s moderated more aggressively than my basic training drill instructor, etc, makes this game feel like more of a chore to me than any other MMO ever did. I truly believe that this game was rushed, for whatever reason, to be released. It just doesn’t have the polish and details that a modern day, cutting edge MMO should have. I just can’t get over that it feels like multi player Xbox to me.

Ultimately, the entire game feels to me, like it’s designed to steer you to the gem store. Honestly, I’d rather pay $15 a month than feel like I’m playing a game where the end result is to buy gems. I’ll keep an eye on it and see what changes, but I don’t have very high hopes in this becoming the immersive, evolutionary, revolutionary game a lot of us thought it would be. I have 11 coworkers that have left the game, gone back to the “old games” and said they didn’t feel they would ever return to GW2. I thought this game had amazing potential, but in the end (FOR ME), it was all just superficial.

Oh, and just because someone’s opinion differs from your own, doesn’t make them wrong.

OP……you can unlock all of your weapon skills in the first couple of levels if you can get the weapons. After that, nothing really changes from that core aspect.
This is not your typical, complex MMO. It has the same grind as other MMOs (or worse), but it’s more like a console game with no real depth. For me, it’s like putting on your scuba gear and looking out over a beautiful ocean, only to find out its one foot deep. If you are feeling like this now, I don’t think it’s going to get any better for you. But who knows….maybe it will grow on you.

Fernling,

Out of curiosity, what kind of stuff do you like to do in the games that you do enjoy? For example, do you mostly PVE or PVP? Do you usually solo or are you more of a “party animal”? I would suggest trying to figure out what exactly it is that you have fun doing in other games and then trying to see if there is a way to replicate that feeling in GW2.

Also, not meaning to get too personal or anything, but is there anything else going on in your life causing you any anxiety, stress, or perhaps even depression? Any or all of these things can take activities we usually enjoy and turn them into a big pile of “meh” without our really understanding why.

Finally, sure, it’s possible that this just isn’t the game for you. It has a very “undirected” style of play that I found a bit irritating and overwhelming at first. Hopefully you’ll find your own way of connecting to the game and enjoying it, but if that doesn’t happen for you soon, then consider taking a break for awhile. Lurk the forums and keep yourself informed, and then when new content is added that appeals to you, you can poke your head back in and check it out.

Good luck!

Holy cow! You Sir, have my undying respect!
This has got to be the best post in an MMO forum I’ve ever seen. Thank you. If only we all could reason and show compassion like that.

Yes to mounts please. Anet, I’ll even pay real money in your game store for them, as I’m sure many would. More money in your pocket, and we know that’s priority #1.

Dont like mounts? Dont use them. A civilization that learned how to teleport people, but not ride animals? Yea, that makes sense……. :-/ Before you say they could have ridden animals, but now only teleport since riding animals is old technology……..they’re still using windmills.

In society today, we don’t need to ride horses either, but some people ENJOY it. If you don’t like riding horses, here’s a thought………don’t ride horses! I don’t see non-horse lovers trying to ban all horses on the earth. Just because YOU don’t like it, doesn’t make it wrong.

Real life is very different from in game.

the reason why people dont want horses is because it’ll destroy peoples ability to see the world, as they would have one without mounts. While people might say ‘well waypoints destroy that anyway’, they’d still have to get there on foot, and giving people mounts would defeat the purpose of the giant wonderful world they have created for us to explore.

That’s a great opinion, but its not mine, and a lot of people beg to differ. Destroy your ability to see the world? Don’t use them. It would enhance my ability to see the world. See how that works?

This. Mounts would enhance the experience for a good many people, including those who are so terribly opposed to them. It may take some time, but it’s pretty likely that they would begin to see that it isn’t the end of the world. I honestly think mounts would be a fantastic addition to this game. A lot of people do, granted they have different opinions on how they should work.

PS: Horses aren’t what you should be worried about. We already know not to count on seeing those, but I don’t see why most other creatures don’t have the potential to be ridden.

Agree about the horses. Just using them as an example :-)

Villious.8530

I, for the life of me, do not see what people have against flexibility. When you buy a car, it has adjustable seats, steering wheel and radio stations because everyone is different and likes different things. I don’t play console game for that very reason. I like the customization and flexibility that computer games offer.

Why are people so against being able to move a few buttons around to better suite everyone’s individual play style? If you like the buttons the way they are, by all means leave them that way, but what is it hurting you if someone else would like to move them? These are small details that polish a game and make it enjoyable for everyone. What if Anet designed this game so that you couldn’t use a mouse at all? Would most people be ok with that? It’s in their best interest to design a game that is flexible to more people when said flexibility doesn’t give anyone an advantage over another. If you think being able to move 10 buttons around is giving others an advantage, then you’re arguing just for the sake of arguing.

The attitudes of “learn to play it like this or go play something else” is extremely short-sighted and close-minded. When you give a customer a choice like that, they’ll go enjoy something else that is a bit more flexible and enjoyable for them. Some people just cant take any sort of constructive criticism or suggestions for this game without blindly defending it. That type of attitude by Anet or its customers can only hurt the game long term.

I just don’t get it….

So many negative replies. Seriously, what’s up with that?
All the OP asked for was that the devs consider extending the event if power outages occur due to the hurricane.
How does that negatively impact anyone? How does that constitute a sense of self-entitlement? How does that warrant any of the snide, snarky comments that have been posted here?
Seriously, people. Get down off of your high horses, stop waving your peckers around, and take his request at face value. It’s not an unreasonable request. No one who suffers power loss due to a natural disaster does so by choice. And while you can argue that the devs aren’t under any obligation to satisfy every request, it is in their best interests to do so in this case for a number of reasons.
For one, there’s precedent. For another, it fosters good will among the players. And finally, there’s the PR.

Try this on for size::

If you approach GW2 as a standard 60$ Action/Adventure Console game (Skyrim) w/online co-op ~ then you’ll be pretty satisfied with your purchase and how GW2 caters to that mindset.

IE: Get in, play.. get out, walk away and wait for the next batch of DLC (expansion).

However, if you approach GW2 as an MMO ~ odds are, you’ll be disappointed for several reasons.

Standardized Loot / Character Progression / Combat::
1. Everything is set up so, no one really ever feels powerful.
2. Lack of trinity means, you don’t need anyone and are not needed by anyone.

The staples of an MMO are designed around creating a community from the players and promoting them to work together. ~ in this aspect, GW2 fails as an MMO.

Granted people can argue, saying that GW2 is amazing and is better off without the Trinity and having to rely on other players.

They then point to Dynamic events and how you “need” other people to kill mobs like Balthazar, Dragons, ect…

But do you really? are the faceless masses anymore “personal” than having a bunch of henchmen NPC to help you finish the event?

Think about it ~ we don’t know the names of other people at those events, because we’re not there for them ~ we don’t need to talk, we don’t need to socialize or even organize ~ we only care about the “chance” at uber loot (perhaps the precursor?) and to farm Karma/Gold.

Since those bosses are nothing more than HP sponges that hit like trucks (no tactics) ~ people just sit back and spam, leaving the few people that agro the mob to be chased by him, while they take pot shots at it and if someone gets low on HP they throw down their AOE heals.

Basically, GW2 tries to mimic the Trinity without creating a “need” for people to do anything more than zerg the content.

This trivializes going back to old content while being “leveled down” in that you see no point as you could “experience” the same content at your own level and at least get appropriate gear/loot.

Even the dungeons are designed this way with their “Corpse run, waypoints”.

In all senses of the word “community” ~ it seems that GW2 fails.

This includes the free 24 hour server transfers that shred any hopes of a well built community as well at the ability to join multiple guilds, and yet refuse to put in a multi-chat for each of them, requiring you to “represent” one guild at a time, in order to talk to other members of that guild.

The same goes for World Vs World ~ you cannot see enemy players names.. and there are no scoreboards dedicated to the very skilled or elite of the “leaders” ~ in fact, if you wish to be a “leader” you need only spend 100 gold on a tome to become a commander, there are no other prerequisites or skill based requirements.

IE: No one knows who you are or why you’re deserving to be a “leader” ~ they only see an impersonal title.

When I talk to my friends of old, and why they use to play MUD’s, Asherons Call and Ultima Online ~ they always talk about the “community” and how back then, those games WERE Facebook. As in, a place for like minded people to gather, socialize and enjoy the craft.

GW2 doesn’t do that, and in my opinion is why WoW is still “king” ~ despite their outdated graphics and kung fu panda hijinks..

If you’ve ever heard someone shout “FOR THE HORDE!” ~ you can see without a shadow of a doubt that the game inspires and promotes a sense of community… for better or worse.

At the end of the day, can you really say that GW2 IS an MMO anymore than League of Legends, Team Fortress 2 or Playing Skyrim while talking to your friends on skype?

opinion =/= fact?…

Nope…….common sense.

Any way to customize the UI?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Villious.8530

Villious.8530

The lack of a very basic custom UI (moving the existing windows around) is akin to buying a new car with a non-adjustable drivers seat. Even SWTOR got that right. To me, just another example of a rushed to market game. If you say that it took five years and was right where it should have been upon release, then it’s a good example of lack of developer insight. Little things like UI, trading post graphical preview, poor camera/FOV mean a lot in a modern day polished MMO. To be different for the sake of being different doesn’t make any sense.

Will there be a customizable UI?

in Suggestions

Posted by: Villious.8530

Villious.8530

In this day and age, to have a UI that isn’t customisable (either by default, or via addons) is ridiculous.

For one thing we should at least be able to swap around where the skills sit in the hotbar slots. Some are more useful than others and therefore you want to keep them together.

For instance:

Weapon hotbar layout (default): A B C D E

Maybe I would like:

Weapon hotbar loadout: A D E B C

Of course, that means there has to be a “loadout” for each weapon type and each attunement (in the case of Elem’s), but surely that isn’t too hard is it?

^This. Please let us move the buttons. A current day MMO with a fixed UI is like buying a new car with a non-adjustable drivers seat. That would be “different” from other car companies too…..and stupid.

Unfortunately I missed the Reddit AMA. Auto-loot topic.

if they separate the bindings to the interaction key, that would be enough, people could just put the loot button on auto if they wanted and walk around…the whole interaction being the same key is a little draconic anyway

There are many facets of this game that are draconic. Looting, FOV/camera, non-movable UI windows, no item graphic preview in trading post, etc. All the very reasons I don’t play console games. Very inflexible.

+1 for adding a FOV slider, or some way to configure this.

I play on a 30" monitor (I know, first world problems), which really exaggerates the tunnel-vision effect from the narrow FOV. I literally can’t play for more than an hour at a time without starting to feel dizzy/sick. I end up tabbing out and surfing the web throughout my play session to give my eyes a break. I have never, in nearly 20 years of playing countless 3D titles, ever had this happen to me in another game.

I’m all for you guys standing by your artistic vision, especially when you’ve obviously put so much effort into creating a beautiful world, but something’s got to give. I know I’m in the minority, but I’m guessing that making your customers physically ill wasn’t on the list of things you set out to accomplish with this otherwise fantastic game.

I play on a 30" monitor as well. I saved for a long time for that monitor and I refuse to scale down the game screen to get an acceptable FOV.

I resubscribed and logged on to Rift this morning and it was like being able to breath again when it comes to FOV/camera. I just don’t understand how a ‘state of the art’ new MMO doesn’t have the very basic mechanics that every other MMO I’ve played since the original Everquest used succesfully. Camera/FOV, non-movable UI frames, no graphic preview in trading post, etc. As much as it’s crippled, this game feels like a console port to PC.

Flexibility is the key to many things in life. When you lock things down and force people to adhere to “my way or the highway” mentality, many people will choose the highway.

While the point you make is good and I too believe Anet will have to deal with this, you went with extreme exaggerations and sensationalism so this is a lot less likely to get to Anet properly.

On another note I want to offer a piece of advice to thread makers.
I’m not sure you guys realize this but Anet hears “if you don’t do this your game will die” on a daily basis, on any subject.
I realize you believe tossing in some far-fetched statements will help for it to be taken seriously, but realistically it actually decreases the credibility of your argument.
Try bringing more evidence (videos for instance), system specs, etc, I’m very positive it will help the cause a lot more than doomsaying.

Those screen shots look like pretty good evidence to me. I thought the OP was pretty much spot on what you’re recommending.

Has there ever been another MMO that has been a greater in-game money sink than GW2?

Skyboxes, very awesome.

Agree. With the horrible FOV, you don’t see half of the beautiful graphics. That is unless you are running with your camera in the grass. Most beautiful game I’ve played in 20 years of gaming, yet it’s not easily seen. What a waste.

Uh….because that what I had. Hence the reason I went with the new cards.

Thanks for the reply Michael. Very constructive post…..unlike the one above you.

Today I installed 2 GTX 670 4GB cards. They replaced one GTX 570 2GB. The thing is, i’m getting about the same performance. Maybe 5 fps more. Really????

this thread needs to be locked down fast. i thought we were talking about bugs, yet flametards are venting about their frustration with core gameplay design, WoW, etc. ANet has been very patient this these threads….they need to start disappearing faster at this point.

Why are you so quick to try and supress opinion? The main problems with this game is the core gameplay and mechanics. They were reported in beta to be very buggy and needed time to fix, yet Anet decided to ignore everyone and still release the game with bugged skills.

Yes, it is their game, but if they want it to survive longer than the last few MMO’s that were released, they need to bite the bullet and start listening.

Why so quick to try and suppress opinion? Because “white knights” know that others opinion has a lot of merit and they don’t want to admit it to us or themselves.

Anet ruling with an iron fist, such as locking/deleting constructive post, will not turn out well.

The game was rushed out to beat MoP. Think back to before release. The devs stated that the total time developing gw2 was 5-6 years. yet after the first 3-4, they scrapped the entire initial design of the game and engine and started fresh. This left them 2 years to get the game out of the door. No MMO can be designed in that time and be decent.

Saying that, they still have time to get the bugs fixed and content sorted in game before people start leaving in droves. But judging by the latest dev comments and indeed blogposts, it’s like the devs are living in a different world right now.

^This…..I believe this is the heart of the issues. Modern day MMO designers have a lot of historical content to learn from. An MMO released without basic movable UI frames is astonishing to me. Its like buying a new car with fixed seats. Flexibility goes a long way to appeasing the masses.

Amazing. Dont listen to nay sayers and gloom bandits

This is a good game, but it’s designed around one thing…..sucking gold so you buy gems for real world money. That’s why bots and gold selling is so desirable in this game.

Guild Wars 2 has a very great potential, but for it to withstand the test of time, I believe there are going to have to be a lot of improvements/adjustments and mentality adjustments for Anet. Before someone says that Anet made this game to make money, there’s a difference between pricking your finger and opening an artery.

Agree that most things are very objective, but constructive criticism is a very healthy thing. Of course, this is only my opinion.
