it pretty much counter anything you might do to stop them stomping.

lets see any blind, block or invulnerable, stability or just dps? cant be countered either when downed you can only contribute with a little bit damage and hope you rally.

Unless you’re a thief! Then you just port away and their stomp fails, then when they try again you just stealth and their stomp fails again. Such a great class, I really need to take the time to level one up so I can use it in WvW.

Wow, so much anger in this thread and it seems to be causing too many people to miss the point. Downed isn’t dead. In fact, far from it. Anet has designed the game in multiple ways to make it easy to rally. They really want to give you a second chance to get up and fight. Personally, I think they give too much of chance, but we’ll need a separate thread for the “I shot a downed player 6 times with a ballista and he self-resurrected” discussion. If I get beat in a 1v1, the person who downed me had better have more than 3-4K health left if they are silly enough to come over and try to stomp me, because that’s how much damage I can do in the 3-4 seconds it takes them to run over and finish the stomp. At that point I rally, with more health than they had a few seconds ago, dodge roll backward, and unleash everything. I think it’s kind of lame, but that’s the game’s philosophy. Why do you think the stomp animation is so obvious and so long? Interrupt me! Kill me now!

As mentioned by several people, the issue with the stealth stomp is downed players cannot target the stamper. You probably should lose anyway, but at least you can throw some dirt or some screws at the guy for a few seconds more. However, in a 1v1 situation, that’s a fatal problem, and it only applies to one class. That doesn’t seem to be in balance and it runs contrary to overall theme of having a good chance to get up from a downed state. The stealth stomp is not the same as the invinci stomp or any of the others mentioned, as they all come with very long cool downs. That’s the balance. If somebody wants to keep their obsidian flesh in their pocket for an entire fight, just to use it on the stomp, that’s a tactical decision. I don’t mind the invincible stomp. You get to use it once — you beat me — and didn’t even have to use it. Well done. And obviously it keeps me from doing 4K of damage to you.

You can’t complain about the stealth stomp (or any other kind of stomp) in a Zerg battle. It’s a free for all, and there are no rules. There are a million ways to die once you’ve been downed and getting stomped should be the least of your worries. In fact, no one should be trying to stomp you at all, unless it’s for pure vanity. When someone goes down, everyone within 1200 should be unloading on the downed player and anyone trying to resurrect. Stomping just makes you oblivious to the action and an obvious target. The stealth stomp in a zerg battle is a smart tactical play and I don’t blame a thief for using it — no matter how much I hate it in 1v1.

The real problem is the downed skills don’t allow you to target the stealthed thief. How many classes have an aoe-no target required downed skill? At least one other person already said it, the balance to stealth stomp needs to come in the downed skills, for all classes. The stomping player will still likely win, but once again you can throw dirt and screws at them for a few seconds. And in keeping with the overall design philosophy, you still have SOME chance to get back up. At the moment, that chance is zero.

Holy kitten! Someone on the forum who actually understands game mechanics and balance. This is amazing.

From what I read here, it sounds like a condition build has everything. While I have a decent armor on my necro, a fully burst backstab thief, if I don’t play close attention, can burst me down still easily. Should I cry now about backstab thieves?

Thief QQ is not allowed on this forum. You are only allowed to L2P.

Its ok if you’re downed. Guys, the joke is, after he’s downed, take a look at what he did in this video. He actually brought an Omega Golem along with him after his death. The point that he actually used an Omega golem on a wooden tower made us laugh hard

You’re a funny one. Drag a simple request out into some long argument about how futile it is to keep playing after you have been downed because according to you there essentially no chance of you winning the fight at that point. I have won several fights after being downed, either fearing people off cliffs (yes it does happen despite how unlikely you think it is, go try play on the skyhammer map for awhile), rallying off random mobs that were nearby and close to death, or even from tagging players that my allies were about to finish. Fact is, the fight is not over when you are downed or Anet would not have bothered making the downed state mechanic. All I said was let me use free-look targeting while downed and remove the target requirement of my skills so that I can hit invisible people with them. Despite all of your useless analysis of game mechanics, you have not provided one logical reason why I shouldn’t be able to do that. If you want to do more useless analysis, don’t waste your time because I’m not going to read it. If you want me to respond, start your post like this “Necromancers should not be able to use any of their downed state skills on invisible targets because…” and continue with your argument if you have one.

What exactly did you hope to accomplish beside the last minute downing of an opposing, stealthed thief?

Low health opponents can be downed before they finish their stomp at which point you have about 50/50 chance of victory since you have slightly lower health but your 3 skill (which is pretty powerful on some classes) is also closer to coming off cool-down. Even if the opponent isn’t at low health, if another opponent nearby is about to die, you can interrupt the stomping opponent to buy yourself time to rally off the other near-death player. If you position yourself correctly near a cliff, fear/bubble can knock the player off and either kill them or buy you additional time to recover. Of course bubble is fine since it doesn’t require targeting, but fear does. I’m sure there are other situations where not having guaranteed death on down state because you are unable to do anything to players you can’t target would be useful, but I’m too lazy to think through them all.

If you could free aim, how often do you think you’d take down an opponent you can’t see once you’re limited to downed skills?

More often than 0% of the time.

Even if there were no stealth stomps, wouldn’t he just run right back up to you after your bubble/fear/vapor/etc like everyone else does?

Here’s the thing people never take into account regarding downed state. It’s a group mechanic. In a 1v1, if you go down and the other guy doesn’t, you’re not supposed to have much more than a snowball’s chance in hell of getting back up.

But, you might say, we’re talking about WvW. That’s where the team comes in. And that’s where there’s no simple answer. On one hand, thieves are always being accused of being useless to zergs. On the other, here they have an excellent contribution to the zerg, finishing off enemy players. Perhaps you should adapt to the game and start making friendly with your server’s thieves, and incorporate them into your play. If you go up against a server who has a lot of these stealth stompers, perhaps you should adapt and start aiming for the thieves. They’re squishy anyway, they’ll make good rally bate.

But at the end of the day, my biggest argument is this. We’re on the WvW forums, so I’ll assume we’re chiefly concerned with WvW. Even if a thief is stealthed it still takes the full ~3 seconds to stomp (barring use of Haste, which isn’t terribly popular these days, thanks to what we used to kitten about thieves being OP for). How often do you survive those ~3 seconds without any other problems? Take thieves out of WvW entirely, and how much more often do you think you’ll get a rally? If there were no stealth, would you be here kittening about stability stomps simply because they’re the biggest barrier to you getting back up?

Each class has strengths and weaknesses. Most classes can do several things well. Thieves generally do one thing well: make people die quickly. Stealth stomping seems to fall in line with that philosophy nicely, don’t you think?

And where in your rambling do you explain why I am not allowed to free-look and hit players with skills without targeting them in downed state? Because that was pretty much all I asked for in my original post that you responded to, to which you said you can (except for mesmer clone skill). However, I am sure that you went and did some testing so that you now realize you were wrong in that assertion.

If a thief was actually perma-stealthed, he wasn’t fighting you, he was restealthing. That’s about all you do in a perma stealth build. If someone really wants to heartseeker back and forth just outside a battle so that when you go down you have a 0% chance of stopping him, more power to him, I guess.

The point I was making which you failed to understand is that stability stomp and stealth stomp are not the same because you can gain access to stealth extremely easily through several different means and this is not the case with stability.

Also, there is no targeting requirement (outside of mesmer illusions). You can freehand to your heart’s content.

As for this, I am supremely confident that you have no idea what you are talking about.

Stop raging and deal with it. Alot of classes are able to stability stomp which is basically the same thing.

I’m not aware of any perma-stability builds. If Anet wants to let players run around invisible all the time and let them finish you while invisible, at least give me a crosshair and remove the target requirement on my skills so that I can skill shot them.

what reason is there really for PvE focused players to come into WvW other than to do jumping puzzles for their gift of battle? Perhaps they don’t even have to anymore, they’ll just buy the legendary straight up with the gold that’s dropping from the PvE Champ trains.

Na, Anet already fixed that with their achievement point reward system. Too many PvE players complaining about being killed in the JP, so they say what are PvE players good at that we can give them badges for? Well, as long as you don’t waste time in WvW you will have tons of achievement points so lets give them 100 badges every 500 points, 200 badges every 1000 points, 300 badges every 2500 points, and 500 badges every 5000 points. That way they will never have to step into WvW, because everybody knows it takes 50 yrs to make 30 achievement points in WvW.

Yep, this mechanic is stupid. Several fights come down to whether I can kill the thief before the thief kills the deer. Especially annoying on necros since marks/life transfer hit everything around you making it very difficult to try fight a player while not damaging all the random mobs running around.

I like the change. I ended up getting 5 skins from opening dragon coffers (averaged about 1 skin per 1000 coffers) and after awhile wasn’t sure I liked them as much anymore for my character given the new skins that are available. Now If I decide I like some other skin better I can just sell the dragon skins and recover the gold I spent on them.

Here’s their reasoning:

We want each character to have a unique experience in WvW, so World Ranks and WXP are all character-based values rather than account-based. We believe that in the long run, this will actually help incentivize players to experiment with various different ability builds for each character. It also creates a long term goal for players of multiple characters, as they can strive to rank up multiple characters to help show off their dedication to WvW.

Sinjet don’t forget D/P Thieves, very overpowered spec in WvW if played properly.

Same with S/D

d/p and s/d are not overpowered at all. Thief is generally only overpowered to players who legitimately cannot counter them through skill; other than that thief is decently balanced and excels in what it is designed to do.

The classes players roll are never overpowered, other people just need to learn to play.

My team was blue and after a quick glance at the map I thought we owned a tower, turns out it was green and I was promptly run over by a zerg exiting from said tower. If they are going with super bright colors, seems like they could at least go red, blue, yellow because right now the blue and green look pretty similar.

I was going to dedicate an entire week to farming Deadeye, but instead I decided to go outside and enjoy the weather. I do not believe in opportunity costs and demand to be reimbursed the 5000g I would have made if I had chosen to do it.

Not sure why you think this. This is the dev response to SAB skins returning, it is likely that sovereign skins will be treated similarly.

Has anyone done any small group roaming lately. If so, how is it? I have some friends who are thinking about transferring to CD, but are afraid that it’s either Zerg or PvD.

Really depends on who the opponents are. Lately CD is getting matched up with non-stop T2 pros so it’s pretty difficult to do roaming. The week we had BP and EB though there was plenty of roaming to be had, even ran into several people on both BP and EB that would /bow to ask for duels and party afterwards to chat.

Sometimes the event randomly won’t trigger for you. Normally the event will appear in the upper right hand corner of your screen, but sometimes despite entering an enemy keep and attacking guards there will be no event on your screen which results in you getting no credit when the keep is capped. Only thing that might work is to try leaving the keep area and then coming back to try trigger the event again.

Well stop being a pure wvw for the half hour it takes to run down to orr. Spend that karma on a bunch of orion jewelry boxes and make 60 gold on drops. Then use those skill points and badges to make a bunch of omega golems in the mystic forge. I don’t know why you wouldn’t want the boatload of gold you are sitting on.

Superior flame rams/arrow carts actually give you the most gold per badge if you are just interested in making money.

GvG is Lame ArenaNet please discourage this.

GvG was by far the most iconic feature of GW1, not sure why Anet thought they could just pretend like it never existed when they made GW2. Unless they were going after a completely different audience that just likes running dungeons and chasing carrots… hmmm.
