So what is the difference of flipping an item and playing tycoon? What does a tycoon actually do on the TP?

I spend maybe 1-2hrs/day on the TP. I pop up a spreadsheet on one monitor, graphs and charts on the other, power up the calculator on my desk, and play around for a bit. Play some short-term stuff, watch long-term investments. Take other people’s money (willingly) and invest it, and give them and myself profitable returns from it.

Of course, I’m not going to give you anything specific because that would interfere with my ability to make money for me and my clients (who only pay me with gold). I think flipping is the worst way to make money and probably the most boring thing that people willingly do.

So you are flipping items for profit. It doesnt matter if its long term or short term.

Rampant speculation on the TP?

in Black Lion Trading Co

That doesn’t answer nothing. In the OP’s food price comparison (even if it is not too well suited to the case in general), there would be people willing to pay for food regardless how high the end price would get. It would not mean that high food prices were a good thing.

So, the fact that thee are people willing to shell out any amount of money for some things is mostly irrelevant to the question whether high price for those things is good or bad, and completely irrelevant to the question whether market speculation on said commodity is beneficial or not.

In answer to the OP’s question – no, market manipulation (TP flipping) doesn’t offer anything good for the game. Flippers do not add anything to the game – they take from the community, but do not offer anything back in return.

First of all, TP flipping is a big gold sink in the game, so it essentially does offer something good for the game to keep inflation in check.

Not really. It removes the gold from the game, but at the same time increases prices. It also concentrates the gold in the hands of a small number of people. The last two things just happen to fuel inflation.

Also, flipping items doesnt really change the value of an item, its the consumer, who buys and consumes it at the higher price.

…yes, increasing the price of an item doesn’t change it’s value. Somehow.

Why would someone sell me a loaf of bread today for 1 silver and then buy it back tomorrow for 2 silver to eat it?

No idea – but that’s not how the flipping works. Here, the producer sells you the bread for 1s, and you sell it for 2s to consumer. In real world, it is a worthwhile service, because it does offer something – it connects the producer with the consume. In gw2, they are already connected, so the only “service” flipper offers is in raising the final price of the item. Which helps neither the producer, nor the consumer.

Again, the flipper doesnt raise the price of an item, its the consumer who choses to buy and consume it at a higher price. The producer has the choice to list at a higher price and wait until it gets sold. That would benefit him greatly.
The consumer can put in a low buy order, just like the flipper.
So why dont they do it? Because its more convenient for them to buy and sell directly. As they have been given the choice, you can hardly blame the flipper for an elevated price.

Right now, givers weapons would be cheapest to craft but you should also check the resale value of the weapons.

Dear Anet,
I love everything about the TP. This is coming from someone who uses it a lot, and no, I don’t turn gems into gold. I could list off everything I love about the TP, from the fees (yes, some players are from GW and know why we have fees), to the amount of fun it can be if I want to play Tycoon (which I love to), to how optional it is for my friends who don’t like to play Tycoon. But that list would be enormous, so let me instead list things I don’t like:
1: The text when the game’s UI is set to small.
2. Flippers

So I just have two wishes:
1. Fix the font size.
2. Don’t become blinded with all the mud-slinging that goes on in this section.

Sincerely,
Toro

So what is the difference of flipping an item and playing tycoon? What does a tycoon actually do on the TP?

Rampant speculation on the TP?

Wanze.8410

edit – Why did I post this here and not in the economy section? Because I’m not interested in how speculation affects the game’s economy. I don’t care whether or not it makes the economy healthier.

I’m interested in how it changes the game itself, in general. How it effects players who choose to have a minimal exposure to the economy. If I want ascended gear, how does the materials costing thousands of gold add to the experience? Speculation is directly responsible for this situation, thus I ask what it adds to the game. (If that makes sense.)

If I posted this in the economy section, I would just start a debate over the merits and risks of speculation. That is a worthwhile discussion, but it is not what I’m after. I am curious how a speculation-driven economy improves the game as a whole – from PvP to WvW to PvE.

You are contradicting yourself here. If someone choses to have minimal exposure to the trading post while crafting his ascended gear, he can certainly do so. In that case, he has to gather the mats himself and wouldnt cost him “thousands” (a quote from you, which is exaggerated) of gold but no gold after all.
In that case we would be arguing over drop rates and not a speculative market.

Anet sees the Trading Post as an integral part of Tyria, which gives players the choice of offering to buy and sell their items at their price of choice, which benefits the game as a whole. Maybe not so much for PvP, as everything you need is free anyways.

@Wanze, My comment regarding seeing it everyday was more about the price spreads. I will use totems for example. There was a time I was buying some of those to balance out having full sets of all t6, this was when they were selling for 17s and bids were in for around 14s. I would see one listed for 14.01 buy it and as soon as I would another would appear for 14.01 I would buy it and within 2-3 seconds another would appear for 14.01 Did this at least 15 times in less than 2 minutes. All the while there would be bids of a few hundred at 14s

I see this type of activity on many different items. I suppose its very possible someone could actually list it for 1 copper above bidding prices. What I find odd is many times it will only be one or two available at a time like that. And as soon as they are bought, one or two will appear again.

Not that I am against people doing this at all, whatever blows their skirt up I guess. (I don’t do it) If that is being done with the intention of getting unsuspecting people to just sell to low bidder thinking that’s what they are generally going for, I would call that manipulation.

Its not a manipulation but an interaction with the market, or every interaction, wether you buy or sell an item, is also a manipulation.
Considering the guy is the same who has a bunch of buy orders at 14s and keeps listing at 14.01s, just keep buying them at 14.01s until he runs out as he makes 15% every time.

There is still room for it to go up a bit as we approach Tuesday. Heck, we won’t even know if anything relevant content wise is coming.

Yes, but discovering all the r300+ recipes (especially for Jeweler and Chef, since there are so many of them) will take you past the XP needed for 400. Hence, to eke out every last bit of CXP without wastage, it makes more sense for me to wait.

I do know what I’m doing. Most of the time.

That might be true for cooking but not for jewelling due to the amount of recipes to be discovered.

For a discovery completionist you have little knowledge of crafting. Any discoverable recipes that will be reset will be lvl 400 and you dont need those to lvl to 400.

True to some degree.

If anet saw what was happening they should have adjusted on the fly if that much silk was really being eaten up by promotion and/or introduced a demotion recipe to ease the price rise.

At that point it becomes the player bases´ fault and its not a design failure anymore. I am pretty sure that the recipe for Bolt of Damask was well balanced at its time of approval (which is a couple of weeks before the patch) according to the droprate of cloth. Linen just spiked because people didnt know how to farm it or get it cheaply, as it had several safety nets with lootbags and salvagable items, so there was a buffer. People are just not accustomed to farm t2, 3 4 mats, thats why the supply went short for a while. I made a killing on linen, not because i bought it months before but i knew what lootbags to buy at the right time.

Yeah, if I were to speculate on cooking mats, I’d go for the ones at or near vendor prices and that match a theme.

Cinnamon Sticks seem like a prime candidate to me.

Chocolate bars and sticks of butter have recovered from the great cookie ingredient deluge, but cinnamon has been in the dumps ever since the karma ingredients were removed. It’s just too common with not a lot of use.

I am not sure how profficient you are at cooking but cinnamon is only used in 2 lvl 400 recipes.

Don’t forget pumpkin pie spice – still it seems to me like something that will eventually get corrected and it’s dirt cheap.

Yay, even though its only an intermediate ingredient, its used in a lvl 400 recipe.
To be honest, i have no idea what cooking 500 will need most. Stocks seem to be a good bet, as well as omnomberries. For cooking as well as jeweling, i dont think that the big profit will be in the mats needed to lvl to 500, it will be the mats that will be required for time gated crafting afterwards. I have a good guess what it will be for jeweller but i have no idea for cooking and I am a professional chef in real life. I do pretty good on the tp but i wouldnt dare to speculate on cooking ingredients. Over 70 lvl 400 recipes to get you to 500, i doubt that any ingredient will make you as rich as buying the right jeweller items.
there is only 2 opinions i can offer towards cooking 500:

If John Smith makes slabs of red meat valuable at the rate of Dollies being killed without Devon fidling around, i will personally walk across the Atlantic Jesus style and the north american continent to shake his hand and check out if his grill isnt bigger than Colins smile.

And whoever decided to buy up all onions on the tp shortly after release: You are my hero and inspiration, because you had the balls to buy up the whole supply of a material commonly farmed. Thanks for doing the neccessary field work for my profit on the tp today.

The other possibility I can think of is that if it’s a level 20 weapon, that’s precisely where an alt would be if they used a Lvl 20 Experience scroll. Wealthy/veteran players who are rolling alts use the scroll, and now need to equip the alt appropriately, just dump large sums of gold on level 20 gear since 1g is almost peanuts to them.

Northern. You can assume this is most cases as over 90% of the world population resides there.

To give a proper answer on topic, i honestly think that jeweler and cooking will come at the end of march. Colin stated that LS season1 will conclude on march 4th followed by a short break for the staff. and after that a mayor content update will hit and i fully expect it to include jeweler and cooking 500.

In an economic point of view it would make sense to decide to place all asc crafting patches 4 months apart from each other, so march/april is a reasonable timeframe.

The population of the world living in the northern hemisphere is 88%, not 90% btw.

How do some people have so much gold?

TP

I invest around 100g a day and get around a 10g – 20g a day return, I could easily invest more and get more of a return but I don’t even spend 1g daily so I don’t see it being worth my time since that 100g investment see’s me get whatever I want.

Having said that, with your current 14g, you’re better off doing the dailies (dungeon runs, world boss rare chests) or aggressively investing (ie park yourself at the trading post for hours on end) until you have enough to just do the daily investment over 15 minutes each day.

30% of Return of interest is a good average for me for daily flipping, which i dont do much, 10-20% for casual players is quite good and as you mentioned, covers your fees and you dont need more. I have more than 30k gold stored in assets but rarely invest more than 300-500g at a time as it is the limit of investment for items i can monitor on a profitable basis. I know i can make hundreds or thousands of gold every day with legal API directed spreadsheets, i dont bother and prefer to trade manually.

9176 Deaths
2676 hours 508 days

Please post a screenshot of you unrivaled achievement along with your choice of a 800 gems giftable reward or 50 gold.

Your inclusion of 508 days makes your post kinda suspicious.

No reward needed, winnig this competition is honor enough
No, seriously, I’m fairly sure many pure sPvP players will easily beat me :P

Fair enough and i will stand by my word and offer the reward to you, if you please, just pm me. If you forfeit your reward, i will donate 50g to our guild bank, as we do guild lotteries on a general basis.

As i said before i dont do much pvp (lvl 15) and was wondering where my high death ratio came from.

Cheers,

I’m OK with your guild receiving those 50g
Being able to show the fruits of my suicidal tendencies is enough reward for me

If you manage to make the thread remain on first page for some time, someone will beat me by a good margin.
Over 3 deaths an hour is not hard to achieve; in fact, it’s almost ensured in sPvP (not even talking about solo tries, SAB tribulation mode without guides, WvW solo roaming on superhero mode, Light Up the Darkness and a lot more).

What is this Light Up the Darkness mode you speak of? I want to die faster in wvw but Commander Sird and Caic are too good to let me.

My little Thief~ not as high. Maybe it’s cuz I have Ninja Vanish.
Or cuz ppl fear the silly hat.

Active in PvE and WvW a lot, used to do SPvP a lot on him till I discovered Warrior easymode.

Just wait for the next balance patch:

Elite Warrior Shout: Kitten off!!!

Makes every player in stealth mode disconnect and uninstall the game.

Range: Map wide

CD: 20s

Heals for 4k AoE btw.

Wanze, you should do more competitions like this! It’s cool seeing mini-competitions like this on the official forums since I can’t really enjoy the fansites. It’s also cool to have competitions that aren’t bloody RNG lotteries. I never had a chance at winning this one, but it was neat seeing it anyway.

Thanks for the positive feedback, alot of credit goes to Varga for claiming the title first and not insisting on the price and Harbinger, who holds the belt right now, i guess.

For me, it just was a way to find out, if i am just a mediocre player and from where my death/hour was coming from. As hardcore spvp guys will propably claim the price, i dont mind to run this competition until the end of January. Same rules, at least 2000 hours played on the character and highest ratio of deaths/hour wins. Harbinger will have to supply another screenshot with his age to be eligible for this one and Varga can expect a little gift around Valentines or St Patties Day, whatever he prefers.

obviously nobody will admit to buying gold from goldsellers and will create a suitable cover story.

saying you got it flipping or from mystic forge or pure luck or dungeon grinding etc.

i take all such stories with a pinch of salt.

Cynical and jaded much? I report every gold seller that solicits. That kind of crap ruins the economy of the game. Some of us actually get more gold by either luck or working hard to make it. Most of my guildmates have money because we constantly do dungeons and flip on the TP. I would think most people who buy gold wouldn’t rear their heads on this thread.

nice cover

Should I have said jealous and lazy instead? Apparently you cannot make gold on your own so you accuse others of buying it. That is OK. Think what you want.

More than likely, you are one of those that actually buys gold and thinks everybody else does the same because you do. Ego I guess.

Being in game since pre release, i bought about 30,000 gems with gold, never spend any real money in game except the initial purchase.

go buy more – my last 20k ingots for the masses is on 2s (35% win^^)

I am not sure when you bought your ingots but 35% ROI (Return of Interest) is something i go for in daily flipping and not in medium or long term investments.

So in essence people need a third party program to see through the deception.

No. The TP shows you the highest 20 buy orders. In high value/low velocity items, it doesnt matter how much listings have been posted at 1c because they will never get filled. It is actually the 3rd party program, that delivers the deception.
