How many have people had over the course of their gameplay?
I have just scored for my 5th.
Lets see what the results are
Are you effing serious? lol I have NEVER gotten an abyss dye, and I play regularly! Finally got sick of hoping and hashed out 20g to buy one.
Um… what? That’s a ridiculous question. Demented Sheep is right…
Never thought I’d edit Nyoka because I liked her look so much. But those horns… too much to resist!
Ok…. I have a SERIOUS problem with this. WHY IS ROX WEARING MASCARA? HORRIBLE! DX
My charr is dying of laughter

Actually, no, you can’t create a character as freakish as Rox in character creation. Someone tried—this was as close as they could get. Even on max settings, the eyes are still significantly smaller and much more realistic. While the charr in this picture is cute, she is still clearly a charr who belongs to the race. Rox, on the other hand, looks like a badly-drawn chibi cartoon.
This is my very first Charr at the moment. He/She is currently shelved, but I hope to come back to her some day. The reason I say ‘he/she’ is because I cannot decide on a gender or look I want for the fella yet, errr…XD The character was originally male and has been subjective to change back and fourth quite a few times now. : x She is female for the mean while, but I think I will most likely change her into a male once again in the future.
Perhaps you should make a second charr. Then you can have both genders without the indecision XD
I never said anything wrong about voicing opinion, however, there is always a reason for it. It’s not freewill, but I’ll leave it at that as not to derail this thread too much.
Regardless, the subject matter is so minuscule that all you should take from my response is how much of a parody I made.
The real important factor here is rather you have any respect for Anet’s decisions or not. They are people, like you and me and more importantly, it’s their world to create, not ours. We’re simply indulging in it.
If they want characters with these sorts of styles, then so be it. It’s your fault you can’t cope. I’m just trying to make you see how disrespectful you’re being to the people who designed Rox.
As customers, we have every right to so called “disrespect” who designed Rox. Every character in every game can and will be criticized. Saying that a thread should be deleted is implying that people should not be allowed to express their criticism of Rox. With that being said, deciding to change what you gave your customers in the first place is not a good business practice, and mostly the reason why I will never be buying an Elder Scrolls game again.
Back more on topic, Rox is a disturbing looking character, and that’s what this thread is voicing. Charr should not look like creepy dolls, they should look like tough big cats.
Well said, Euin
Agreed! Rox horrifies me. Female charr were designed to look like the same species as the males—to be strong and fierce. Anime goo-goo eyes and hello kitty features do not belong on a charr
I just logged on to complain about that myself. She looks HORRID! Mind, the new horns and facial structure are cool, but really? REALLY? Those EYES look freakishly unnatural. You’ve GOT to be joking! Female charr were intentionally designed to look powerful, noble, and equally fierce as the males. This kind of ridiculously cute kitty-kitty-mew-mew look is what arenanet wanted to stay away from. I don’t get it…
lol, Where exactly did you hear that? “Female charr were intentionally designed to look powerful, noble, and equally fierce as the males.” Give me one place that says that exactly and you’ve got yourself a valid argument. I can’t believe people are seriously complaining about eyes that look exactly like a pair that you’d find on a normal cat.
During the Betas, Arenanet posted an article titled “The Artistic Origin of the Charr”, describing the direction they chose to go in regards to charr design. It is no longer available. However, there was a section describing the design of female charr. It was stated that Arenanet’s artists experimented with, and then rejected, concepts of sexy and concepts of cute for female charr. They decided that the females needed to look sleeker and more graceful than the males, but equally as ferocious and powerful.
Although this article isn’t available, arenanet has stated much the same in their book, “The Making of Guild Wars 2”. And I quote:
“Perry realized the females needed to feel as large and fierce as the males, but refined and sharpened to be feminine.”
Rox does not look large and fierce, she looks like a cute kitten. She does not look refined and sharp, she looks like an anime cat.
If you want proof, I’ll even scan the page for you…I personally welcome attempts to break free from stereotypes. It will be nice to see a character that doesn’t fit into this cookie cutter, cliché and shallow writting they’ve been churning out so far. Honestly, I’m well and truly sick of the female charr in GW2, they all seem like the same person to me. If they characterise Rox in any way close to a cute and fluffy kitty cat I’ll praise them for breaking the tedious mould they’ve set so far.
One reason why Eir was one of the more interesting characters in GW2 is because she’s not the typical norn. She’s wise and tactful, not some brash brute that charges into battle skull first. As important as it is to flesh out your world and have key characters represent the lore and characteristics of each race so players can become accustomed to them, carbon copy clichés make for terribly boring allies.
I hope they dye her armour pink and give her baby versions of ranger pets (maybe a bear cub or a leopard cub) and get a cutesy girls voice actor for her. Oh and she should refer to herself in the third person. Well maybe that’s going overboard, but seriously, a female charr that is characterised as cute would be a breakthrough for GW2.
I beg to differ. Female characters have been portrayed as either sex dolls or cute kittens in almost every online game there is. The harsh, serious female charr in Guild Wars 2 are a refreshing change from the sort of thing you see in Tera, WoW, and so on. There shouldn’t be cute & cuddly little cat female charr any more than there should be female charr with double-d’s, lipstick, and thongs. It just doesn’t belong as part of the race.
During the chaos, Rox—a charr ranger lacking a warband—is sent on a desperate mercy mission by Rytlock Brimstone himself. Team up with this young charr gladium as she strives to prove her worth on a dangerous errand in the midst of a war zone!
If this picture show us really young charr female, then i’m ok with it, face is pretty fine. But BIG HORNS are another story, i used to see them only on charr males, for female this is looks pretty ugly and unnatural.
Even if it’s a young female, it’s weird. Look at the female cubs. They’re cute, but they have realistic eyes. I actually like the horns, but they’re at odds with the eyes. Huge, masculine horns suggesting age and authority do not go well with huge goo-goo eyes from an anime

-In Guild Wars 1, the female Tengu were larger and stronger than the males, and they held leadership roles. They definatley aren’t oppressed, it’s probably just that arenanet only put male NPC’s in the world because, until they give us more detail about the race, they can afford to be lazy.
-Of the three Centaur tribes (Harathi, Modnir, Tamini), the only ones who don’t have female models are the Tamini. Harathi females are very distinctive from the males and a lot more common than males, so those are the ones we notice. Modnir females have masculine voices and appearances so it’s harder to tell—but the Modnir rangers are in fact women. When you hit them, they make female charr sounds of pain. Also, they have VERY subtle, small breasts.
-Ogres have both males and females. Female voices are slightly less deep, and horns are slightly smaller. The easiest way to tell an ogre’s gender is to look at the clothes—the ones with covered chests are female, the ones with exposed chests are male.
-The Dredge are an oppressive society, and in Flame and Frost we know they’ve made an alliance with Flame Legion. Considering that we’ve seen no dredge females, I think they are oppressed, and have probably been relegated to slave and breeding roles deep underground.
-The Grawl, I’m not sure. They’re the only race we can have racial sympathy for which doesn’t have noticable females. It could be that Grawl gender differences are so subtle we can’t tell. It could also be that Grawl culture is similar to Jotun culture, where the females are kept hidden from outsiders.
-Harpies are all female. They reproduce by forcing their way with males of other species.
i have to say, i’m a bit confused on some of your points. first of all, you make several that i feel are VERY valid — charr female tails, among them. sylvari “hair” — omG please give us more! and norn and human hair — i despise that the only “long” styles don’t move properly or, in the case of the norn, is covered by a headpiece on the one long style that’s truly gorgeous. anyway.
but when you speak of the norn, and the human, faces as all being “supermodel” types, that i can’t understand. first of all, it is more than possible to build a body type that’s just “fat” or “dumpy” or whathaveyou. then, add in that some of the faces on both races have scarring, some are “older,” and some are just plain out, what i would consider UGLY and beyond ability to make pretty, and i’d say there’s a big bit of variation available.
for a new game, yes, there are things i’d love to see different, but if you’re going to include the “supermodel” argument, it needs to be valid. given the faces you’re able to make, i don’t think it is.
So you consider the human faces to be what normal, everyday men and women look like? To me, they look like what you see on the covers of fashion magazines. Also, what do you mean, you can create a fat or dumpy body type? No you can’t. All the males look like body builders or steriod addicts, with the exception of one slender frame. All the females look like anorexics or supermodels, with the exception of the two heaviest frames. The two heaviest look like average healthy females.
First thing I’m going to say is: Don’t diss the demented goth face :P I love that face…although I do wish the makeup wasn’t runny…
AT ANY RATE… I completely agree. I was disgusted with the character creation, especially the human character creation. It’s limited, it plays into unhealthy gender stereotypes and promotes eating disorders. I cringe every time I see a female character who is so thin she looks anorexic, with breasts the size and shape of melons—or a male character who looks like a steroid addict shaped from plastic. Yuck!
Charr and asura are also a big problem because they hardly have any options to choose from.
Norn, I wanted to play…but I just can’t take them seriously. The men look awful—big barrels with tiny pin heads. I wanted to make a female norn, but I just couldn’t take her seriously with those HUGE in-your-face breasts growing from her chest like mutated tumors.
Sylvari have the best options, I think. While their facial and hair style options are limited, the facial feature sliders have a very noticable effect. They have legs of normal length, the women have breasts of realistic size and shape, the men have more normal body frames, and there are so many color combinations to choose from! I can’t complain about the Sylvari, but the other races need serious work.
I enjoy WvW a lot, but I’m not very good at it. In a group, I’m fine. But if I go off on my own, and encounter an enemy player, I’ve just learned to run in the opposite direction because I die in every 1v1 battle. I need to know how I can toughen up my characters for these encounters. What sorts of runes, weapons, builds, and trait distributions are people using to get so powerful in 1v1? Any help would be appreciated—my WvW characters are a warrior, necromancer, and guardian.
When arenanet designed the charr, they were going for fire demons with cat features. So the horns come from being fire demons
I’ve been seeing a lot of complaint threads against dailies and laurels. TBH, I don’t see what the issue is. For me, the dailies are easy, fast, and enjoyable. I don’t mind that arenanet has been changing how the system works, because it’s a new implement, and that’s to be expected. Is there anyone else out there who has no problem with the dailies?
I’ve found all the realms to be pretty friendly. If you’re interested in role playing, the two role playing realms are Piken Square (EU) and Tarnished Coast (US). Warrior is a straightforward class—very easy to learn, so I’d play a warrior first. Elementalist and Necromancer are good classes to try after you’ve learned a little. They’re quite frail (but can do major damage), so they teach you to dodge attacks and kite (move while fighting so you don’t get hit).
What race are you interested in?
To me Charr should look fierce and imposing, the teeth and horns on female Char just don’t look right to me.
It depends on how you design a female charr. The most popular kind among players is the cutesy, skinny kind. I think people like to try and make them look like their pet cats. But there is a ton of variety among the females, and they can also be made to look bulky, fierce, and imposing. Give the character creation a run-through and see for yourself :P
The cute faces make me cringe, actually. In Guild Wars 1, the asura females all had large, toothy mouths and dark eyes. They were very unique. On a lot of the cute female faces we have now, the mouth has been reduced to a tiny opening and the eyes have been made to look more human. This new design robbed the asura of some of their original charm.
That said, more options is always good. The asura could use more facial variety—but if it gets added, we should get different kinds of choices. Cute, scary, ugly, and everything in-between
So with the recent update, we got new character creation options via the game’s makeover kits. New hair and eye colors were added. Hopefully, this is a sign of more options to come in future updates. So, with that in mind, what do YOU want to see added in the future?
I would like to see more facial and horn options for the charr. I would also like to see more body and face options added to the humans, which are imperfect, aged, and scarred. The airbrushed model look of the humans never did appeal to me.
When I heard that more character creation options had been added via the makeover kits, I was exited. However, upon seeing the new colors myself, I was a bit dissapointed. Yes, they are cool colors, and yes, it’s great that we can get more unnatural colors for our characters. However, I feel like Arenanet’s efforts were put into the wrong kind of options. For example, the charr and asura are still sadly lacking in facial options, horn options, and ear options. The humans and norn (especially the females) need some less-perfect facial options—scars, age, and so on. The wild hair colors are a fine start—but I hope arenanet gives us more additions to character creation in the future.
That’s just my opinion though, and I’m more interested in seeing how everyone else feels. What do you think about the new character creation options?
Female Charr and proud
RaaawwwwwwrrrrrrIt is terrible that there are so few female Charr and so many Norn and Human chicks running around.
Not to mention short male Charr… Thats just a little insulting.
Agreed about the norn and human females. But my short male charr is highly insulted haha
Largos are like Quarians? Wha..?
@Weindrasi Have you ever seen a stingray swim? I could see very easily how those back ‘wings’ could be very effective in helping Largos swim. If anything its the fact they use swords as an aquatic race that is more out of place.
While I disagree, I could understand the dark elf analogy.
However, I greatly disagree with your “wings” – since, as you yourself show, their appearance is that of mantra ray fins (in texture, thickness, and mobility while swimming) that is placed on the body akin to wings. The idea of wings – especially butterfly wings – being used underwater indeed doesn’t make sense… until you see their swimming animation. If you really want to hold to your “wings aren’t realistic for living underwater” you should explain how the swimming animation doesn’t work, because it does kitten well.
Also, there’s one massively major flaw in your claim. If they were made to suck in an age demographic, then they’d be more prominent. They’re greatly hidden in the lore – things made to bring in certain demographic groups are often more prominent and obvious. It’s entirely possible to play through 90% of the game without ever knowing of largos (up to the Orr storyline, and in almost every zone, even the five zones which have largos in them).
The structure of stingray fins is WAY different from Largos wings. Largos wings have one tiny point of connection along the spine, and they’re awkwardly shaped. They would create drag in the water. To be like a stringray, they would have to be attached all the way down the spine—from neck to tailbone, and they would have to be a simpler triangle shape. Largos wings aren’t logical at all. Now since a fantasy game is fantasy, you don’t need to be 100% realistic, but you should at least be belivable… and the Largos wings are just too blatantly NOT belivable to be in good taste. The reason Largos wings were not designed with belivability in mind is because stringray fins aren’t very interesting or appealing—but huge, mutant butterfly wings are. Even awesomely designed, supercool stingray fins will never win against mutant butterfly wings in the mind of a 12 year old or aion fan.
Also, I don’t see sense in what you’re saying about demographics. Guild Wars 2 can’t target EVERY niche of EVERY demographic right upon release—or ever, to be honest. The fact that Largos are, at this point, not very prominent in-game does not mean they weren’t designed to target a certain demographic. As I see it, they are not prominent now because Arenanet is focusing on other areas of the game that target player demographics. The Largos were implimented in such a way that they can be expanded upon later, as the game gets further expansions. And why would the Largos be expanded upon? So they can drag in certain kinds of players.

Try different armor combinations. On my charr elementalist, I wanted a more primitive look—I think she looks a bit like the Flame Legion from the first game. Here’s a screen:
@Olaf Egon Wein, LOL! It’s perhaps the most exquisite race I’ve seen in any game to date. Just pathetic, how about some elucidation to validate you’re claims as to why they’re an aion knock off/massafail. Dark elves? Since it has pointy ears so it must be an elf…. Ha idiotic! Now if you think they’re wings you’re obviously suffering some severe brain damage, those are fins quite honestly I must say, what an utter laughable excuse for trolling I have ever seen.
Dark Elves: It’s not just the ears. It’s the dark skin tone, the white flowing hair (on a deep-sea creature? REALLY? hah!), the hyperfemine and hypermasculine male and female bodies, and the fetish armor. They resemble dark elves and/or night elves to a great degree—their design, from their colors, to their ears, to their sexuality—screams cliched evil fantasy elf. Metal fetish armor and humanoid body types are NOT what you should find on something that lives underwater.
Wings: Those bulky butterfly wings would actually PREVENT a creature from swimming. The lore excuse that they’re fins is rediculous and easy to see through. The designers can’t implement air-combat, but corny aion wings and butterfly fairies are in high demand among kid gamers. So, they slapped some butterfly wings on something and then called them fins. The intention wasn’t to be creative or design a functional sea race—it was to suck in a certain player demographic. As a result, those things growing out of the Largos’s backs aren’t remotely belivable on a sea race.
Cha’Kaam 5/10. It sounds cool and it does fit an engineer—but it doesn’t follow charr naming conventions, so it seems out of place for a charr.
My recent character is Raigra Gorebutcher. She’s not very smart, but she’s a bully who enjoys pushing her weight around and getting involved in violence. She’s one of my other charr’s underlings—chosen because she’s easily controlled.
I just found a great-looking light top for Albane. Works a lot better then what she was wearing before.
Personally, I detest the largos with a passion. The Largos are what you get when you take all the things 12-year-olds think are cool, and throw them in a blender. Basically…
Dark elves+aion wings+fairy butterflies+super-secret-assassin-people+big breasts=LARGOS.
All the overdone, childish fantasy traits have been thrown into the largos design. While the other races have aspects of overdone fantasy traits, they also have aspects which are unique. Nothing the largos have feels truly unique—it’s like going to the “Fantasy Game Yard Sale” and picking bits of used ideas.
Detha – "YOUR PLAN IS JUST STUPID AND WON’T WORK!.
I love her for that line!
Guild Wars 1
Most Hated: Gwen and Cynn. Both of them are pathetic and whiny. Instead of becoming mature, strong individuals as a result of the hardships they face, they scream and cry at everyone, have tantrums and fits of rage, and act illogical. I feel bad for Mhenlo and Kerian Thackray or whoever.
Most Loved: Pyre and Danika Zu Heltzer. I don’t know. They just appealed to me. And yes, I liked Danika’s voice.
Guild Wars 2:
Most Hated: Logan and Rytlock. Mostly Logan. He got all of great-grandma Gwen’s bad traits, but at least Gwen was fairly smart—Logan is dumb as a doorknob. I think his lack of brainpower has forced him to think with his man parts 24-7…. the obsession with Jenna and the babyish fight with Rytlock show that much. Which leads into why I hate Rytlock… because he lets himself get baited by Logan’s crap. Rytlock’s all right most of the time, but when anything has to do with Logan, he turns into an angry 11-year-old.
Most Loved: Dinky, Galina Edgecrusher, and all the Asura
Oh yeah… and although they didn’t make my most hated list, I HATE THE LARGOS. The Largos are what happen when you take everything 12-year-olds think is cool and put it in a blender.
Dark elves+aion wings+fairy butterflies+vampires+super-secret-assassin-people+chicks with big breasts=LARGOS
(edited by Weindrasi.3805)
I don’t see the issue. All my characters were able to get the first name I chose, with no problem at all. Make something creative up
As I see it, the necromancer’s grasp on life is more flexible. A necromancer can choose to leave his or her body for a time, and wander as a spirit. It’s risky business, because this leaves the body vulnerable and if the necromancer strays too far from his/her body, he/she risks wandering across the barrier between the world and the mists—and losing the way back. In which case, the abandoned body would die.
I think the necromancer sees the world differently as a spirit, because he/she is seeing the overlap of the living realm and the mists. He/she can see things that are invisible to living eyes.
I agree. I didn’t make a Norn because I dislike their design, but Owl would have been my character’s selection. The wise, protective mother-matriarch is an appealing character theme. The second best you can get is Wolf, who protects his pack.
So why am I putting up a post like this? Why should I care?
Don’t ask us, ask yourself. Why ARE you posting this? Why DO you care? I’ve been following Guild Wars 2 since it was first announced years ago, I’m fairly active on gaming forums, and I haven’t encountered this at all. I mean… it’s a Game. It’s silly to care what other people think of a Game… but it’s even sillier to care that other people care what other-other people think of a game. Let the internet idiots claw at each other—if you come across an argument like what you’re describing, just ignore it. Play your game, live your life, be happy.
Dear Arenanet:
BRING BACK CANTHA! If you have to make some edits so you don’t offend people in Asian countries, fine. Two of my mains are descendants from the Kurzicks, and I want them to be able to visit the land of their ancestors. Furthermore, you could do a lot of amazing things with isolationist Cantha. A huge, sprawling overcrowded city that spans the whole continent, held in the iron grip of an oppressive and power-mad government? It’s excellent! Perhaps our characters can come to Cantha and join underground rebel groups made up of Kurzick and Luxon descendants who have kept aspects of their culture alive. Perhaps we can travel through the old Dredge tunnels to access the continent without dealing with the wrath of Bubbles. At any rate, Cantha was amazing. Cantha can be even more amazing. DO NOT DITCH CANTHA
If the shoulders and helmets are what bother you, then I don’t see what the problem is. Shoulders and helmets are optional—just hide them.
Yeah, my young necro would be like “Really? Wow! Can I see?”
Seems so weird for a necro to squeal in disgust at body parts XD
We already know that an issue with Guild Wars 2’s personal story and character personality system (brutal-dignified-charming), is that our characters are forced to be very stereotypical good guys no matter what. Cookie-cutter characters, white knights, goodie-two-shoes, you name it. There’s no real personality.
However, another issue with the character personality system is that our characters are forced to be immature, and very narrow-minded. When we encounter NPC’s who are unconventional or controversial, our only reply options when we talk to them are thoughtlessly immature, or just plain narrow.
For example, in Mount Maelstrom, a group of Asuran scientists are dissecting Risen body parts to look for ways to defeat the Risen. When they tell you about it, you only get two reply options:
1 EW! That’s revolting!
2. I see. I’m going to leave now. (AKA, I feel awkward and don’t know what to say)
The “Ew, thats revolting!” reply option is considered “Dignified”. I just don’t get that. How is rudely screaming “Ew, that’s revolting!”, after someone tells you about their difficult and important job, a dignified thing to do? How is it even logical, when your character is supposedly hardened by combat?
I wish our characters weren’t forced to act like narrow minded kids. “Holier-than-thou” reply options like the one described above leave a sour taste in my mouth. I wish Arenanet provided us with more diverse personality and behavior options for our characters. For example, in reply to the Asuran scientists, our character could have these choices:
Barbaric 1: “Ew! That’s revolting, and your krewe is vile!”
Barbaric 2: “I hear you take the parts you dissect by force. HAH! Sounds fun!”
Charming 1: “That must be difficult work for you. I admire your dedication.”
Charming 2: “You work with corpses all day, but you look so clean and well-kept! What’s your secret?”
Dignified 1: “For the good of Tyria, work like yours is nessecary, though unpleasant. Stay strong, friend.”
Dignified 2: “The boldness of your work is commendable. I would be glad to aid you, if you need it.”
Humans are way out of proportion. Arenanet gave them super long legs, weird torsos, and little heads to try and make them look attractive. Think: anime. I think the feet are OK, but humans in general are kind of awful. Look at the Sylvari—both male and female, they have more realistic bodies to what humans actually look like
The name of my first main, Nergal Junior, I use in all games. Nergal Junior is a cartoon character I enjoy, and I had him in GW1. So I didn’t spend any time developing his name, I just reserved it and it crossed over from the previous game.
My other main, Nyoka Gorefell, is a different story. I knew very early on—way before release—that I wanted a female charr. I spent days writing down numerous names and letter combinations, combining first names with surnames, and mulling things over. The name that finally stood out as just right was Nyoka Gorefell, so here we are.
Tionvrath Gorefall, another charr of mine, took significantly less time. I had to think up the first name, but since he’s Nyoka’s brother and lackey, I already knew I’d make the surname similar to hers. Fell and fall lol
Albane Memorykeeper, I thought up on the spot. Albane is a family name from something unrelated that I’m writing, and Memorykeeper came after I spent 5 minutes thinking about the character’s personality.
It bothers me too, but it’s a small error. There are other, larger issues, which bother me more—and at the end of the day, none of them have made me throw the game away.
My characters:
Charr, female, warrior.
Charr, female, elementalist.
Charr, female, warrior (no.2).
Charr, male, necromancer.
Human, male, necromancer.
Human, female, guardian.
I’m a female, and Guild Wars 2 is the first game where most of my characters are female, instead of all male. I like female charr in particular, because while they’re clearly women, they weren’t designed to appeal to men. They aren’t sexy—and so they appeal to me as a player who likes gender to be represented with diversity. For my female human, I can give her unsexualized armor, so yay. As for my males—one of them represents a cartoon character, and the other just turned out male. And, as you can see, I like warriors and necromancers XD
