I suppose I’m a “Fashion Lunatic”
One of my time-consuming activities in the game is getting the most tasteful and best looking armor & weapons, dyed just right. I’ll spend waaaaay too long browsing the trading post and the PvP armor locker—trying different combinations of color, mixed armors, and weapon sets. I enjoy PvE, WvW, and roleplay, but I MUST LOOK GOOD while doing it :P Any clipping and I might just die

Make Fire Shaman @ Iron Marches a World Event

in Suggestions

Posted by: Weindrasi.3805

Weindrasi.3805

The Fire Shaman at Iron Marches offers an interesting group event battle, and the Scorch Warband offers some interesting lore when spoken to after the event. However, because the Shaman is in a map corner away from waypoints, and because he doesn’t offer a substantial reward, he is virtually ignored. Unless friends or guildmates are on and willing to help, a player is stuck unable to defeat him. My suggestion is to remake him into a timed world event boss with a chest reward at the end. This would encourage people to join the fray, and the Scorch warband lore would be more accessible.

My warrior Claws wanted to say hi. I’ve yet to meet another femcharr warrior.

That sucks! I have two femcharr warriors. They’re some of my favorite characters.

At any rate, I think female charr are slowly becoming more popular. In Borlis Pass, I used to never see female charr around. The males are still much more common, but female charr aren’t so rare anymore. The other day there were four of us together in a WvW zerg—it was a nice surprise

I’m on Borlis Pass too! Add me to friends and hopefully I’ll run into you! I’ve noticed more femcharr as well, but still no where near as many as males, and most of them are cutsey kitten rangers or elementalists.

Ok, you’ve been added. Add me too XD I’ll send you a whisper if I see you on

Deer inspired Horns - Female Charr

I like the idea! It’s very unique. Even though male deer are technically the ones with horns—I think in this case they fit much better on female charr. The average female charr is wiry and swift—so deer horns, which show both grace and power, fit them. The male charr equivalent could be the horns of a heftier animal—moose maybe?

Nyoka and Tionvrath--my Charr

Weindrasi.3805

I haven’t seriously tried to draw my charr characters since I was planning them out during beta days. The other night, I gave it a go and came out with something I’m pleased with.

Nyoka Gorefell is the large brown female. My original inspiration for her colors came from the Flame shamans back in GW1. She herself was born in the Flame Legion—her scars being evidence of the abuse she received. She was fortunate, however—managing to escape. She’s now a warrior of the Blood Legion.

Tionvrath Gorefall is Nyoka’s twin brother. He was condemned by the Flame Legion for heresy—but unlike his sister, he did not escape during adolescence, and instead lived as a prisoner for many years. His stunted growth and frail body are evidence of his long imprisonment.

Some pretty interesting stats for your server Weindrasi.

I think I know why a lot of people are choosing the skinny build. It’s because of clipping. The clipping isn’t so bad on them whereas it’s pretty bad on anything heavier/muscluar looking. Personally, I don’t think it’s a big deal, but that’s me. /shrug

Makes sense—clipping in this game is a pain. The results are partially based on server observation, but the specifics are from the “post your charr screenshot” thread.

Weindrasi.3805

I think I can help XD. I was bored one day and took a survey of all the male and female charr pictures on these forums, to figure out which options were the most commonly used and which ones were the least commonly used. My results:

Male Charr:
-The most common faces were the one with the nose ring & bloodied teeth, and the last one that looks kind of like Rytlock. In fact, almost every male charr character has one of those two, so if you’re going for unique, avoid those.
-The most rare faces are the chubby fluffy one (the first I think), and the one with the severe underbite and scrunched nose. In particular, the face with the underbite is rare—I have never seen a player use it to date.
-In terms of horns, the black forward pointing ones and the dark brown wavy ones are super common, followed by the white ones that curve up.
-The three rarest horn sets are the chopped off ones that have metal at the end, the stunted tiny ones, and the horizontal bull horns.
-People like skinny bodies and huge horns—so they give males a slender figure and max-sized horns. More muscular bodies and smaller horns are less common.

Female:
-All the hornsets are pretty well-used here—although I’d say those with decoration aren’t as common as the simple ones. People tend to like smaller horns. Max-sized ones aren’t as common.
-People LOVE the three cute kitten faces—the housecat-looking one, the cheetah one, and the one with the pink nose are painfully common. The tiger face at the end is also well-liked.
-The most rare face is definitely the mean one with an underbite. Personally, I love this face—it’s very unique. If you’re going female, give it a try!
-Similar to males, people like skinny bodies on females. However, they’re even more overused on the female—probably because it gives them that lithe assassin look. So if you want an unusual charr, select one of the heavier frames.

-Lastly, white charr are overused. WAY overused. There’s a white charr epidemic! Black charr with red eyes are also pretty common.

Guild socialization - It's depressing.

You can’t expect everyone else to adopt your play style. The only way you’re going to get that in-game socialization you want is to join a guild with real life friends or with people you have some kind of history with.
The only reason I join guilds is so that I have quick and easy access to teams that make WvW and PvE tasks easier. Sure, I’ll chat a bit now and again, but my main purpose is, essentially, to get henchmen out of the other players. Socialization is for my real friends, in my real life.

Elementalist Charr - Which Legion?

in Charr

Posted by: Weindrasi.3805

Weindrasi.3805

Honestly, an elementalist wouldn’t be better or worse suited to any of the Legions. All charr, regardless of Legion, are suspicious of magic—but each Legion is going to have some who are cool with it and some who are not. The real difference would be how the elementalist uses his or her magic to help a Legion. So it depends on how you want to play your elementalist.

Blood: This elementalist would be a violent battlefield soldier, using the elements to cook or freeze the helpless opponent inside their armor. They would probably favor earth and fire—especially earth because it causes massive bleeding damage and provides hard-hitting close-range attacks.

Iron: This elementalist would put his or her talents towards more creative tasks—like infusing a new weapon or invention with magic. Elementalists could really shine here because they can combine technology and magic for weapons of mass destruction.

Ash: This elementalist would have the biggest variety of battlefield tactics. He or she could use wind to make them faster and more stealthy, or earth to hide in a natural environment. An ash elementalist would hone magic to be used in assassination—both long range and up close, and to confuse an enemy

Can any Charr help this indecisive guy?

in Charr

Posted by: Weindrasi.3805

Weindrasi.3805

Lore wise: Charr guardians are virtually non-existent. It’s not in charr culture to be a protector/defender of others, because everyone is expected to defend him or herself. The only one in-game is Dinky, and he’s considered weird and unintelligent by others. So in terms of cultural norms, a charr born in Ascalon would not be a guardian. It might be viable for a charr who grew up orphaned among another race, but that’s it. A thief, on the other hand, works well for charr

Roleplaying: Pretty much same as lore. If you have a charr guardian, you’re going to need a legitimate excuse or backstory as to how and why it’s so.

Armor: Guardian is heavy and thief is medium. It’s easier to find good looking heavy armor for charr, but there are some very cool medium sets as well.

Gameplay: Hard to say. There’s a lot of variety with all the classes

I would actually say this is wrong. There are a lot of Charr Guardians (especially in Iron Legion). It’s not uncommon for a Charr to be a guardian since warbandmates look out for warbandmates. Yes, you are expected to be independent, but also trustworthy, loyal and a teamplayer. Charr are a powerful warmachine. Everyone from the smallest cub to the oldest veteran is a cog to this machine.

And the whole faith thing incase someone asks, faith doesn’t always apply to God or religion. I have faith in my guild we don’t screw up this week in Guild Bounty. I have faith my dad will live to be 100. I have faith GW2 will continue to be a decent game. You can have faith in anything.

All right. Find me one of these so-called Iron Legion guardians. They don’t exist. Arenanet even stated that they don’t in a lore discussion, because it’s against charr culture. Your character is intended to be unique and stand-out from the culture. But when it comes to NPC’s, there are no guardians except Dinky.

Bring back the PC sidekick from GW1

in Suggestions

Weindrasi.3805

In Guild Wars 1, you implemented a system where we could select one of our other characters to follow the one we were gaming with, as a henchman sidekick. While we don’t have henchmen in Guild Wars 2, I think it would be a neat addition to PvE if we could select one of the characters we aren’t playing to follow the main.
If you enabled the sidekick player-character to have its full build, weapons, and abilities—perhaps you could make the game register it as a second player, to scale events accordingly. Or, more simply, you could give it a limited range of abilities based on profession and have it act as a weaker, but permanent and revivable, “summon”.
This would be fun for any player. Most of us develop a sense of affection for our heroes, and it can be hard to pick between favorites. Why pick, when you can have two together on the field? Also, it could be a neat addition for role-players who have inter-relationships between their characters.

DEAR LORD NO!

I am so SICK and TIRED of seeing women with virtually no clothing, and huge breasts, in video games. As a female, it makes me feel like a piece of trash… or a piece of meat. There are already skimpy options in this game for those who want it—it needs to stop where it’s at. Guild Wars 2 has actually shown some class, and some concern for women’s issues, by providing lots of creative modest options, giving us strong female characters, and defying gender roles with the female charr. What they have going is a good thing, and I would be deeply disappointed if they ruined it by coming out with more skimpy armor.
The objectification of, and disrespect towards, female characters, has been battled against for years. If you think having your chainmail bikini isn’t an issue, you’re mistaken. Images like that are so prevalent in society, they damage young girls and women every day. They encourage men to objectify women, and women to objectify themselves, in real life.
So no, please no more skimpy armor.

Basically, take the male horns, and modify them to look feminine. Make them smaller, smoother, sleeker, and with a slightly varied shape to be distinctively female. Then, take the female horns and make them masculine—more ridges, textures, thickness, and length.
Below, I have traced two male horn sets from screenshots (marked by the dashed line). Within them, I have sketched a possible female version. Since the version remains within the bounds of the original design, perhaps this could help avoid clipping issues.

Dear Arenanet,
Members of your charr fanbase were disappointed to discover the limited amount of character horn options upon release. It is very encouraging to see you add a new set of horns to your female charr selection—so thanks!
I have an idea for you to add additional horn options. I know that clipping is an issue, and that you have to select horn shapes with minimal clipping issues. Here is my solution: Use what you’ve already got.
Since the version remains within the bounds of the original design, perhaps this could help you avoid clipping.
In the future, I may add more horn concepts. Thanks.

There are no mounts in GW2. People RUN everywhere (even 10 feet from one vendor to another). They climb mountains and can jump from fantastic heights. They swim at torpedo speeds.

OF COURSE they are all young and fit. They HAVE to be!

Then naturally, they die of overexertion, so there are no old folks.

Maybe the pro-mounts clique is right after all? Or are we being prepped by our computers for a future like “Logan’s Run” where nobody lives past the age of 30?

You don’t get it. People who climb mountains and jump from fantastic heights, who run and jump and fight, do NOT look like steroid addicts (for males). And what about the females? Women who do all those things do NOT have perfect skin, shiny salon hair, perfect makeup, huge flawless breasts, emaciated weak waists, and legs and arms with no muscle.
Someone who “dies of overexertion” is going to look rough, scarred, battered, and life-worn. Not like a body builder who has the best nutrition and a personal weight room. Also not like a supermodel with breast implants.

If four other people were doing the same dynamic event as you, you wouldn’t mind, and might actually welcome the help. It’s not an embodiment of beauty, because that isn’t beautiful. It’s an embodiment of our society’s messed up mentally-ill view of perfection. Disrespecting the Development & Design

in Lore

Posted by: Weindrasi.3805

Weindrasi.3805

It takes a special kind of arrogance to get irritated at something this ridiculous. Etiquette? Seriously? My characters do have lore-appropriate names, but if I wanted to name something “Giggles Nostril Hair” or “RRRRytlock Brimstone” or even “38273Y8372QYR32Y723”, that’s my business alone. Who cares if the names aren’t lore-appropriate? Guild Wars 2 was made to cater to all sorts of people and play-styles, not just to lore buffs and roleplayers. I’m sure the designers are delighted to know that “Giggles Nostril Hair” is enjoying the world they created, just as much as “Nyoka Gorefell” or “Blaine Jacobson”.

Looking at things from a roleplay perspective, your character isn’t going to know the names of complete strangers anyway. So if “Giggles Nostril Hair” goes running by in his underwear, instead of getting annoyed, just assume—as your character would—that the person had too much to drink, or is going for a swim, ect.

I suspect that the majority of people on TC aren’t aware it’s a roleplay server anyway. The average GW2 player is just going to log into the game and play, without any attention to the forums or established server norms.

My first move would be to add proper variety to character creation.
Humans:
-Females that don’t look anorexic
-Females who actually have some muscle mass
-Males who don’t look like steroid addicts
-Males who have body hair
-Scar, blemish, and bodily flaw options for both genders
-More facial variety
-Eyes that are actually dark brown or black

Norn:
-Male head size needs to increase
-Females need heavier, more muscular options
-Females need to look less like Barbie, and more like NORN
-Scar, blemish, and bodily flaw options for both genders

Charr:
-MORE HEAD OPTIONS FOR ALL
-MORE HORN OPTIONS FOR ALL
-MORE HAIR OPTIONS FOR ALL

Asura:
-More ear options
-More face options
-More hair options

Sylvari:
-They’re the best off, but still, more hairs and faces

….Once that part was completed, I would set aside a specialized design team to make more armors that fit the charr body types, and fix all tail clipping issues

…..By that point I would be a very happy lead designer, and I would go to bed proud of myself.

EDIT: I would then wake up the next day with a brilliant idea! Scrap all the male armor and replace it with hot pink thongs, three sizes too small, and sparkly nipple pasties with neon tassles. Of course there will be variety! Your pasty tassles can be neon green, or neon orange

Upright Charr

Weindrasi.3805

Standing upright isn’t natural to the charr. Only Flame Legion shamans did it in Guild Wars 1. Since they were the top of charr society, and we know they self-mutilate, it’s been theorized that they forcibly changed their posture to make themselves distinct from the rest of charr society. It seems that whatever the Shamans do to get that posture, it’s still used today. However, since Flame Legion is outcast from the rest of charr society, and their practices are rejected—there would be no back straightening among the Iron, Blood, and Ash legions

It’s needed if you want your game to reflect the complexities, variety, and realism of a living world. All complex societies have some form of religion, ritual, or tradition and many different viewpoints on the matter. By having a wide range of religious, spiritual, and atheistic views in the game, the world is more interesting and it offers more points for the player to connect to on an emotional level. If the game were completely devoid of religion, or viewpoints for/against religion, it would be less lifelike and the societies we encounter in-game would be less interesting.
Personally, I’ve enjoyed hearing the different worldviews of the characters, and developing religious worldviews for my own characters—who range from atheist, to agnostic, to deeply religious.

Rox, the Charr

in Flame and Frost

Posted by: Weindrasi.3805

Weindrasi.3805

I completely agree with Weindrasi. Rox just deviates WAY too much from the set standard. The “well she’s a younger charr” justification also completely fails given that we can see charr cubs (who are all incredibly cute in a charr sort of way) in-game, and none of them have this weird eye inflation affliction.

Inb4 all charr cubs are retconned to have huge eyes to justify Rox’ genetic disorder.

Might I suggest going out in the real world. You might be surprised by the fact that people are actually different, not everyone looks exactly the same nor do they have a set standard about how everyone should look. Why would Charr be any different?

Frig those of you complaining about her appearance sound utterly ridiculous.

Why should every Charr have the same appearance? Charr SHOULD have varying appearances, just like humans do. Sometimes these appearances may result in larger or smaller features than normal, they may result in appearing older or younger, uglier or prettier, cuter or fiercer, skinnier or fatter and so on.

Every Charr should not be fierce too, some could be cowards while others could be fierce warriors. Some could be gentle or calm etc.

This is a ridiculous statement. If there were a human version of Rox, she would look like this. If you can find me someone who was actually born with eyes that size, who is a healthy, ordinary individual, I’ll refute my point.
VARIETY is fine. Making characters look unnatural, like they don’t fit in the same universe… that is a problem.

This is Wynne Gautr, my Kurzick guardian. For her, I have the commander coat (t-1 human), devona’s gloves, dredge pants (from SE dungeon), and some plain chainmail shoes.

Rox, the Charr

in Flame and Frost

Hi, everyone. The team has been following the spirited discussion about Rox (and Braham). I just wanted to pop in with a note from our Lead Character Artist so he can provide some background information and clarity about the art direction for Rox.

Aaron Coberly, Lead Character Artist

Hey everyone, this is Aaron Coberly, the Lead Character Artist here on Guild Wars 2. I can see that there are a lot of strong feelings about the design decisions for Rox so I wanted to come on and set the record straight. The goal with Rox was to expand the charr’s visual options. She is a young charr so we thought it would be a good opportunity to introduce the cute kitty cat end of the spectrum. This isn’t a change of direction but an expansion of the race. Our goal is to add more variety to all of the races over time and we saw this as a good opportunity to do this with the female charr. The charr are a feline race, which gives us a lot of options—from the grizzled matronly lioness to the strong puma and even the cute house cat. We don’t want to limit our options to just one section of the feline genus. Our designs are inspired by all the feline variety that exists in nature.

Further on down the road, it does mean that if we introduce new faces into character creation, they will include a broader range. Does that mean that this particular face will be in there? No, because she is a main character, but there could be a cute kitty cat style face.

Hope that information helps you all understand the thinking behind Rox’s appearance.

Dear Arenanet,
To be honest, the idea of you adding a “cute kitty cat face” really disturbs me. Why? Because there are already multiple cute kitty cat faces available, which, through facial sliders, can be made ridiculously “cutesy”. The idea that those faces are STILL not cute enough, that you would plan on adding faces EVEN MORE CUTE…. that’s going too far. That’s going into the domain of “This isn’t a charr anymore, this is a kitten from Barbie’s play set”.
You had a set of standards for making the female charr, in which they were supposed to be as fierce as the males, and stay away from the clichés of “cute girlie” and “sexy”. The charr females in the picture below are on the absolute border of that—some would even say they have crossed the line already with their appearance. However, in the name of variety, it’s understandable why they are there. That said, we need more faces that—while giving variety—also represent charr as they should be. Fierce. Cunning. Deadly. Beautiful. Frightening. NOT cuddly and cute.

Female Charr as male Charr

in Charr

This seems a little silly to me. Male charr do have broader shoulders and more of a back hunch than female charr (due to more neck and back muscle)—however you can wear certain armors that downplay his bulky parts and bring out his slender parts. A female charr is a female charr. Why not just try out a female character? If any, the female charr are your best option because they aren’t “girly” at all.
If you want your character to feel masculine, but with a very skinny build, that is an option. You can give your female charr one of the fierce faces (one with spikes growing out of it, or hairy underbite one), and then make its eyes small and its chin thick. Also, the females have a forward-facing set of horns which looks a lot like the male forward-facing horns. At the end of the day though, she’s still going to be “she”
Really, it comes down to picking the lesser of two evils: would you prefer to play a male character that’s too bulky for your taste, or a female character with the correct body?

EDIT: Btw, here’s an example option in terms of a more masculine female charr:
