Alright, you guys know the drill! How are the changes so far? Either answer these questions for me or just talk about what you feel is important to mention for Ranger.
Specific questions:
- The main builds for ranger were Condi Survival, Power Ranger, Trap Ranger and Spirit Ranger. How many of these are you still using?
- Traps have been great from what I’ve seen. Has anyone been able to make use of the new spirits, even if it’s only a single spirit in a build (excluding the elite)?
- Has anyone been able to make a true beast master style build? Not to much in that you take beast mastery, but more that you use your pet much more than builds like condi survival or power ranger.
- Have you tried the opening strikes build (Remorseless) + beast mastery gs trait? Does it stand up to the LB power ranger?
- Have any odd builds come out as viable (support or shout for example)?
1. LB Power Seems ok w/better survival
Cond Survival off hand radius far too small. I lasted longer pre patch cond build, but that may not be the Ranger as incoming damage is pretty high atm.
Traps just seems odd, even had my spike trap vanish when triggered (no knockdown or dmg done).
Spirit Ranger gave it a whirl, still meh. Hung it back up. They die quick, long cd, not worth the utility slots. Stationary and better replaced by a Engineer.
2. Still use frost for SHill Tequatl defense is about it.
3. Nope. My pets die quick (even BM spec), pathing is slow, and barely seem to tag a moving target to proc off some of those traits. Traited F2 durations are way to low with so many traits invested. Base speed/attack speed/f2 all are slow on my pet to really make a difference. I wish Anet would go play a BM hunter from WoW.
4. Not yet. But going melee traited like mentioned will melt me before it matters, unless 1v1 I imagine.
5. Still need to play around more.
This opinion is based off of Spvp & WvW with the limited playtime I have had since release. I know one thing for sure, no meta position in any game mode…still.

Just want to clarify since I saw this come up a couple of times in this thread and we haven’t actually released our full official patch notes for 6/23 yet….
Ascended Gear will be staying 5% better than Exotic Gear. Gear beyond the tiers we already have are not going to be added and our existing tiers won’t change, they won’t be our main end-game form of progression for your characters/account for all the reasons we’ve covered before – it isn’t what we think Gw2 is about.
Masteries is being added to PvE to help provide this system as our form of progression for PvE moving forward, and the WvW ability system exists for WvW and will be what we use to expand WvW in the future.
To more directly answer some of your point….We are adding a system that lets you change the stats for your ascended gear (weapons and armor) next Tuesday – which will cost a combination of 10 spirit shards, piece you don’t want anymore, 5 ectos, and an exotic insignia of the stats you want to convert to. Legendary Gear will remain the gear that can freely change stats any time.

GW2 was released August 28, 2012 and they haven’t asked me for any money til now.
I will pay it gladly.
Really depends on your playstyle, what game modes and builds you enjoy most. I’m waiting for the release of new legends before I craft my 2nd one.
I’m hoping the Druid gets plenty of self/group stealth, but would also like to keep (Hide in Plain Sight).
Not much of a fan of this outfit, but that mostly has to do with how I always lean towards nature archetype and visuals.
My gems are ready for the Melandru outfit
The beta weekend event two meta-event was pretty kitten fun.

I would like to know if any changes to scaling healing power will be adjusted for HoT. So many Rev traits increasing healing by X% it looks like a devoted boost to healing, but w/o the math in front of me healing seemed to scale horribly around 700+~ currently on my Guard AH Shout build.
Unless all those traits are there so you don’t have to gear stat as much towards healing, but we also lose our trait stats for healing in HoT…dedicated healer role (even using other legends it’s quite the investment into traits for healing)/emphasis on healing has me a little loss.
After you create a character and finish that first part of the personal story (lvl 2 I think) you can teleport to the mists (spvp lobby) and your character will be boosted to lvl 80 w/all traits and abilities available to test out.
A good way to see the playstyle before investing time into a profession.

and welcome on!
I agree its no skill pretty much. Probably disagree how unbalanced it is but I feel like its a type of build that is rewarded too much low skill low risk build should be the weakest type of build.
The following builds take no skill/little skill and I will rank in order of how little skill they take:
1, Staff ele – There is a reason all the newbs play this
2, Shoutbow
3, Power necro – 1 spam and passives
4, D/P thief – 2 buttons = kill anything
5, Hammer dps guardian – like a 3 button combo that my granny could do
6, S/D thief – spam, no cd management
7, d/d ele – takes more skill than those above
8, Celestial engi – pretty much just spam
9, Bunker guardian – the original brainless spec
10, longbow ranger – spamming from 1500 range takes no skillSo that means this whole meta takes no skill. And mesmer is fairly brainless. Porting around like a clown abusing bugs and having perma invulnerability = no skill. Although it does take a little skill I give mesmers that. The bad ones suck alot. But its still too storng vs everything in the game except thief.
I wonder why as a main Ranger/Guard players post how easy it’s to play a LB Ranger?
Sure it’s easy to dish out fair dps from a distance at times of 1500r (really our dps doesn’t compare to how fast a thief/ele/etc…can blow a player up in melee), but most arena maps and capture points hardly cater to that playstyle at all. Plus you take in consideration the lack of group boons/cleanses at that range, dmg mitigation, reflects, and all the ranged stuns, condi, and tons of gap closers that can shut down a LB Ranger in a matter of seconds.
No GS block, 6sec physical immune, or standing in HS (pound away!) going to help all that much, especially the way maps are setup. Unlike WvW where we do have a pretty great terrain advantage.
Usually my Guard can shut down a LB Ranger pretty fast in a spvp map with teammates and all other things considered. When I play my Ranger it’s fairly easy to dish out some damage, but staying alive in those maps is a whole other ball game compared to other professions.

So many ways to mess with spvp trolls.
(edited by Wetpaw.3487)
given the spec is a support spec, I doubt it will have high damage.
People seem to be highly resistant to the notion that there’s something other than Berserker DPS in the game.
Given that all the specs thus far have a very specific role, is it really outside the realm of possibility that HoT’s content will be designed with more than DPS berserker mindless pew pew involved?
I strongly believe that they are giving us these specific roles because we will be in need of them with HoT
I hope you’re right, love to play a dedicated support role. I know a few players who would come back if they new endgame HoT PvE was more than zerk dps, so far it’s looking so.
I treat this game as a sub model mmo at $20/month. Played since BWE2, and plan on playing til GW3.
Plus I enjoy supporting businesses in my area.
Events: I tend to have a strong dps pet (cat/bird) and always a drake to swap for the aoe f2/combo finisher blast (only type of pets to have blast). Krytan Drakehound is nice for the f2 aoe cripple lockdown on a 20sec cd.
Breach: This depends on the boss encounter, and if you can even keep the pet alive in the 1st place. I like to swap bird out for Jungle Stalker and keep on passive just for f2 might boon.
VW mobs: I usually use Krytan Drakehound & Ice Drake to help slow (aoe chill/cripple) down mobs that are after the carrier. The Ice Drake will also have a blast finisher for the fire fields.
VW: Well keeping your pet alive can be more trouble than it’s worth. Before VW I get out of combat and swap in dps petsx2. Save your Jungle Stalker for the burn phases to help with might stacks.
I like glassbow 6/6/2/0/0
Hope it helps~
(edited by Wetpaw.3487)
Up against a full premade today and they were winning by 100 points give or take. Two Guards (med/shoutheal) for the life of them couldn’t take me (glassbow) and a engineer no matter how many times they tried we threw them all around the point.
After a clean stomp they start cussing saying they’re going to slit my family throats blahblah if we keep using knock backs etc…people are people.
Don’t take GW2 spvp serious op, esport meh. I started spvp 4weeks ago casually for the 1st time since release out of boredom and some loot. It’s a unbalance mess of a game mode built into a game made for large scale fights PvE and PvP. Unfortunately the esport crowd has this sort of reputation across many esport games.
Report/block/mess w/the game and move on.
Glorious set, title, and these esport players can have their muck back
(edited by Wetpaw.3487)
If you’re interested in LS2 for the story have a friend/guildy that has it unlocked run you through it. The rewards/achievements are through the purchase only.
Well that’s too bad they dug kitten that deep that no future feature corrections could be applied. I know comparing what is possible in one mmo doesn’t mean it should be possible for all, but that’s still an unfortunate answer.
and Rhyse I wasn’t talking about the telegraph system (and the many reasons why it’s such a poor implementation to combat) but the screen clutter as a whole.
…not sure why the word [hole] got the kitten treatment?
(edited by Wetpaw.3487)
Probably not, but I wish we could.
The game has so much screen clutter and visual messiness already, I don’t see this impacting gameplay (eg- class identification, which is already impossible) in any way and it would give more customization options to everyone. Why not go for it.
You should see Wildstar that’s screen clutter over the top, GW2 is a work of art in comparison
I also was thinking would this mess w/pvp (class identification), but we already have usable Outfits, and Standard Enemy Models.
I’m not sure if it’s possible in this game, or if Anet has a stance on this. No google search comment to be found.
I’m a big fan of GW2 wardrobe/dye customization in comparison to other games, but a few other mmo’s have done away with armor restrictions to fill wardrobe slots, any chance we will see that down the road?
Thanks~
(edited by Wetpaw.3487)
In the same boat kinda. I’m just doing spvp to unlock titles, finishers, tomes, and armor sets til HoT.
A few professions builds are completely broken op, and chance on crit sigils lessons any skill play further.
fast forward to 14:10 we will find out over time, I hope so!

The wrong forum community to bring this up in op, forums of no and negativity.
I remember players bringing up a glider system after AA was released, and also got negative responses “go back to AA if you want gliders!” Now look what’s coming to HoT (and probably the gem store).
All for mounts, but I would prefer a system where a multi passenger mount (w/a speed increase) was given as a reward for first time map completion.
Then we will agree to disagree then because Snow Leopard is terrible as is Take Root and there’s never a situation in any PVE from open world to dungeons to fractals where they should be used outside of trolling the group you’re in.
From a wvw roam point of view Snow Leopard has saved my kitten a few times when a roam team/mini zerg gives chase.
Dash range 1600×2 & prowlx2 (5sec stealthx2) within one cd. Plus it’s fun to stealth>dash>knockback up to five off a cliff/keep wall.

We all can’t like the same things, and trust I would have preferred to see the Ranger specialization preview over this list, but I’m still glad I got to see all this stuff anyhow.
Um… why? Just why?
Okay, so you unlock all waypoints on your level 20 Warrior. Congratulations. Then what? It’s utterly meaningless to go to areas with level 80 mobs only to die when they blink at you.
I’m utterly confused as to why anyone could consider this a good idea. It ultimately has very little utility beyond quick-travelling to cities, and that’s already possible thanks to the Asura gates. If you REALLY need that shortcut to the dungeons, try walking to them? Costs nothing, takes minutes and you’ll be going through areas which are probably more appropriate for your level.
The requests just keep getting stranger here.
Because many players don’t quest at all to level. I leveled my Ranger/Guard the oldschool way of map completion questing. I leveled my Necro and Warrior via crafting. I leveled my Thief/Mesmer via lvl20 scrolls/lvl1 tomes.
I prefer rewarding a player that finishes map completion like I mentioned in a previous post over handing out WP’s…but I know how the dreaded “M” word is frowned upon in these forums.
I find leveling to be an outdated component to mmo’s. I would much rather see developers focus on other features and ways to grow a character.
You made a completely new character? Unlock everything again. It’s 100% fair, stop complaining.
or maybe it’s just feedback…not a big deal either way, my alts can continue to sit at jp chests for all I care.
and since you mention fair, how about we include WvW maps as part of of map completion again, or not allow gold to gem conversion, and remove level up tomes while we are at it? Your “fair” is subjective.
Is this about WvW maps or gold to gem? No. It’s about someone wanting to have all the waypoints cause he doesn’t want to get them again with his alts.
you brought up “fair”, and I responded in example how dumb/subjective your “fair” “stop complaining” point is.

I am sincerely confused, what exactly is the great news this week? More boring WvW changes? Lions Arch stuff that is gonna happen PRIOR to HoT (so technically not something new about HoT at all)?
Clearly they took a week off cause the other elite specs aren’t ready to show yet, but once again, would’ve been nice if they had just been up front with us about that instead of lying to us.
They didn’t lie, and since they have had a change of heart communicating to the players how about we not bash them for it.
“That was actually me. I sign my posts with RB. Rubi signs her posts with RB2.
What you asked was whether the Lion’s Arch info was the reason there was no specs reveal. To pit these two pieces of information against each other misunderstands the game development process and the fact that we have different teams working on different features. The folks working on Lion’s Arch are not the same people we have working on profession specializations. As I said on Facebook: we release information when we’re ready to do so. If we haven’t revealed something, it’s because we’re not ready yet.”

So this has been brought up in the past but I feel it might do with a revision.
Anet have created an expansive world. It’s full of stuff and things. The only issue with this and an MMO is convenience and replayability; that is, levelling alts can become quite a chore.
Having several 100% world map completed characters, I would personally appreciate an unlockable item earned in-game that allowed alts to unlock waypoints across the world because, whilst I like whatever profession I am levelling (spoiler alert: sylvari necromancer) exploring/running around what I alread know off the back of my hand is…boring. And tiresome. So what does everyone think of an item that can be earned to unlock waypoints. Mayne a consumable that’s account bound so you can send it to that particular character and it will unlock waypoints. The waypoints unlocked could be specific to the age of the game, i.e. old world (tyria excluding south sun and dry top).
Thoughts?
Also not a gemstore item kthnx.
I have to agree.
After two full map completions (including WvW) I can’t be bothered to do it a 3rd time. If WP’s were unlocked I might actually take an alt through the map events/quests. If anything may actually bring veteran players back into these maps.
Anet could always offer an account wide mount for the PvE world as a reward for your 1st map completion also
Considering we aren’t 100% sure on what weapons they will use by default, guessing on the extra is asking a bit much.
We already know that Rev will have by Default…
Default Weapons
Hammer
Axe
Macewith th assumption of
sword (from Rev’s Art work seeing him use sword)
staff (melee weapon shown in the trailer)Other people speculate Rev may also get as default
Dagger
ShieldSo that leave these other Weapons since Dagger is assumed going to Warrior, unless they get Pistol’s instead, and Shield has been confirmed to be for Mesmer. Staff is also going to Ranger so the Melee Staff skills as Rev’s 1st specialization would be against the rule of no 2 Specialization released on the same time use the same weapon.
Look at the 2nd comment down, not sure the starter weapon though.

A couple notes on Dragonhunter. We went with this name because we felt it was evocative of the medieval witch hunters. Guardians consider themselves protectors of the innocent. Followers of their faith be it in honor, valor, etc. The origin of the dragonhunter is a more subtle nuanced version of this. Guardians fight for justice and the dragonhunter faction believes justice is the eradication of dragons and their minions. I understand this is a lot more high concept than Mesmer but at the end of the day we felt like we wanted to try and push a more mature theme here. I hope this helps explain our thinking. We had other generic names in mind but felt like it was important to have a mix of spec names that are generic fantasy, more Tyrian fantasy, and more high concept. This one falls more in the third category.
Thanks,
Jon
It was a pretty great Ready Up, and follow/support your choice of the Dragonhunter. Thanks for the further explanation and communication as HoT is being revealed.
Keep up the good work! now howabout them Druids
I bet if they did add mounts every anti mount player on these forums would rush out and buy/earn one after their initial cry.
That would be a very unwise move on your part. Your losses…. I shudder to imagine it.
Personally, if I were the gambling type, I’d say that some of the “anti-mount” players would rush out and grab a mount. However it would not be for the reasons you believe. They would not race for mounts because they want them — but rather because they would suddenly feel that they need them. Whether the mounts offered any form of gameplay advantage or not would make no difference in that respect. We see this mentality in so many aspects of the game already. When something exists in game, from cosmetic skins to achievement points, many players feel compelled to work towards attaining all that they can.
As for the rest of the “anti-mount” crowd? Well I imagine some would try their best to continue playing the game without mounts, no matter how damaged their experience may be. The rest…. well the rest may just quit the game.
snip*
Well that all works for me.
I can be put on the list for mounts, but once again when Anet thinks it fits their game and audience. I also don’t hold to the idea of GW2 copying other games mount features, or lack of.
(edited by Wetpaw.3487)
Nice try but the forum warriors (a small percentage of the actual community) are not the most open creative players when it comes to change. In other words don’t expect much from them.
Good news is Anet does what they feel fits their game and audience, if one day they choose to add mounts we will have them. Maybe like jumping for GW2 we will see mounts in GW3 or a future xpac.
I bet if they did add mounts every anti mount player on these forums would rush out and buy/earn one after their initial cry.

1. I have heard this a few times today. Time to get off your high horse of maturity…you do play a VIDEO GAME, just dumb to make that correlation. Opinion w/o thought, sure.
Thank you for perpetuating the stereotype of video games being a juvenile hobby.
Yes because shooting magical arrows at dragons as a cat with horns in a video game is such a mature leisurely activity, but naming a specialization Dragon Hunter is so immature?
and yes the activity of video games are juvenile generally (not the age of the player but activity), and I’m ok with that. You, anduriell.6280, and many others on these forums are being shining examples of the immature stereotype surrounding video games with counterproductive remarks through insults on this topic.
(edited by Wetpaw.3487)
1. “Dragonhunter” sounds like it came from the mind of a child no older than 8 yrs….
3. Thematically speaking, it’s basically a guardian playing ranger for a day. It feels very uninspired, unoriginal, and doesn’t feel like it’s going to bring anything new and exciting to the table like the chronomancer does.
4. The virtue rework is okay, but should really be baseline, honestly. Not only are they not adding a new virtue, but the reworks feel quite counterintuitive, to be honest. VoJ will no longer proc to allies by the looks of it, VoR will require a leap to heal alllies (as opposed to just, y’know, an instant 1200 radius heal), and while the block looks like it’ll be useful, we really shouldn’t have to trait an elite spec just for a duration-based block. If the spec is meant to be more backline support-oriented, then why are they making our virtues less effective support skills?
If the bow deals decent damage then I can maybe see myself taking it, but there’s no way I’m going to use wells, and there’s DEFINITELY no way I’m going to refer to my guardian as a “dragonhunter”.
I completely agree with this. Dragonhunter is such a lame name. Compare it to all names created for guildwars and it upsets me. Warrior, Ranger, Monk, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist, Assassin, Ritualist, Paragon, Dervish, Guardian, Thief, Engineer, Revanant and Chronomancer. NO WE ARE DRAGONHUNTERS. Might as well name the Necromancers specialization Deathknights, if you are naming guardians that.
Even the DeathKnight sounds better than Dragon Hunter. Necros should specialize into Zombie Revivers or whatever. I don’t know, I cant think completely original.
Honestly WTF was Anet thinking…were they thinking??
I think it sounds great, and Anet thinks it fits…looks like the rest of opinions are sol.
1. “Dragonhunter” sounds like it came from the mind of a child no older than 8 yrs.
2. Traps are already underwhelming on rangers, and virtually NEVER used on thieves. As if this isn’t enough reason for skepticism already, it was mentioned in one of the recent livestreams that traps are going to be nerfed to have an activation period upon being set, meaning that you won’t be able to set them off by just planting them under an enemy’s feet. You have to set them ahead of time and HOPE that someone is dumb enough to run in it without dodging.
3. Thematically speaking, it’s basically a guardian playing ranger for a day. It feels very uninspired, unoriginal, and doesn’t feel like it’s going to bring anything new and exciting to the table like the chronomancer does.

2. Traps are underwhelming for Rangers? where? in the dungeon meta? I WvW roam and spvp they seem to destroy opponents just fine. Since we know nothing of how they will work in HoT lets not assume they will be nerfed.
3. We saw a few abilities…a few. We know nothing on the numbers, traits, utility, elite, or how this specialization works with other weapons and Guardian combat.
Anet has started communicating with its players divulging information, players don’t like it? Go play something else, don’t use the specializations, try to be constructive w/o insulting the people providing you entertainment.
I like the name Dragonhunter. Considering that dragon’s are the great evil of the world, and guardians have the justice/smiting evil theme going on, whats wrong with combining the two and saying “I smite the great evil, dragons”?
Paragon, justicar, etc. aren’t exciting and pretty bland imo and do not fit what they want to do with elite specs, which is to take unique spins on classes.
I enjoyed the update also, just ignore these forum cries. Justicar, Paragon, etc..could be for other specializations or future xpacs.

Salvaging is a good idea, but I think the system programming is stacked against implementing it.
When you salvage a piece of light level 80 rare armor (for example), you end up with silk scraps. Not bolts of silk. or silk armor components.
The problem is that if you back up ascended armor to that level, you have not one but several types of materials. Working it backwards it’s Ascended Armor-> Armor sub-components -> Bolt of Damask -> wool/cotton/linen/silk-weaving-thread.So at the base level there’s a difference in how it’s coded.
Sure, it would be nice if you could salvage ascended armor and get wool, cotton, linen, and silk weaving threads. That would be sensible, but I get the feeling the programming code is a different animal from standard armor, and thus incompatible with the current salvaging system.
I know little about code, but what you say makes sense. I was thinking more along the line of a separate item completely, for example the [Upgrade Extractor] sold in the gem store. I wouldn’t mind having to purchase this “Ascended Salvage Kit” strictly through the gem store.
Anet makes a profit and after the initial rush to buy this item materials like I listed above wouldn’t unbalance the TP.

As much as I enjoy this game, I get absolutely zero enjoyment out of dungeons. I honestly miss the trinity design and it just feels like stack might and win is all that happens. I want to love dungeons, I loved them in WoW for years (not anymore since they have been garbage since MoP), but GW2 dungeons and fractals just don’t do anything for me.
This. Got my skins and title long ago and never went back. Not sure how popular/enjoyed the dungeon meta (zerk) is for the community just based on these forums or my personal experience, but I don’t care for it no matter how challenging the dungeon is/was.
$39,99 – $59,99 seems like a likely price range for standard edition.
This is what I’m assuming also. It could go much higher if they do a special/deluxe edition for online and retail store to sell.
I would make both of those traits innate to the profession, unlocked at level X. I never use the rez ones, and I usually just swap in/out fall damage when it’s needed at that moment.
Just make falling and reviving all that more fun knowing these perks are accessed through a level instead of traits.
(edited by Wetpaw.3487)
I rather they just are innate to the profession, same goes for 25%base speed traits/signets. If anything just for better/funner gameplay.
snip*
And haven’t you seen all that regen? The swiftness and regens are SO, SO USEFUL IN DUNGEON CONTENT.
New dungeons coming to HoT announced? If you’re referring to that tired old dungeon content of easymode stack and splatter zerk meta from years ago…well good, let that content be phased out.
I’m not declaring my view as the end all be all. We don’t have all the information yet. I’m just saying people look at this and say “No diversity in builds now”, which is way off base.
I’m just trying to get people thinking about this a bit differently, it’s not all doom and gloom.
Community diversity in builds is what I take from this, players will have to actually rely on their party/friends/guild to overcome certain combat scenarios. This sounds great to me.
“Spirit pets are better than their fleshy counterparts because they can float above the ground, move through objects, and otherwise sidestep a whole bunch of pathing problems with relative ease. Treating some of them as spells also means that we can leverage our tech to add them to the game at a very low cost.”
I will take this for $100, Anet!
