dont know if its my computer acting up or the pathing ><

I don’t see any problems with the route you are taking. It seems clear. Unfortunately we cannot see inside their network all that well.

Are you getting a lot of disconnects? Is the game crashing? Or it is just slow to respond/low fps?

To contribute more pathpings, this is what you do.
While in game, type in “/ip” in the chat window. This will be he IP you will use.

Then, in Windows, click start(not sure about Windows9). Type in “cmd” and hit enter. You should be at a command prompt window. Type in “pathping ip” where ip is the address you get from the “/ip” command.

To copy it, right click on the command window and choose “select all”; the colors should invert (black<→white). Just hit the enter key and it should go back to normal. Then paste the results in to a reply.

Lag Issues [Consolidated]

in Account & Technical Support

Xystus.3241

This is a consolidated list of pathpings/traceroutes people have posted over the past few days.

The main trends I see in the US:
1) Those who traverse Verizon based networks are definitely having issues. Specifically with the peering of Verizon to ArenaNet.
2) US Players who are routed from the WEST over Level3, tend to see a pretty static packet drop early on.

EU Players:
Issues with Tinet and Tinet’s peering with NCsoft’s “plaync.com” enclave.

Looking over what little data I can see; Customers coming in from Verizon are having these issues. Definitely points to a peering issue here. ANET should get with Verizon and try and find the cause and fix this issue.

Level 3 traffic, like myself appear to be fine; this is coming from the midwest.
Level 3 traffic coming from out west; seem to start having constant packet loss earlier; even before they reach the level 3 hops in texas area. There may still be an issue with Level3 out west. Not sure how much ANET can do here, unfortunately =/

No the EU game servers are in Germany (Frankfurt I think). The login account servers are in the US. I was just noting that on FIOS, looks it with 20ms ping times while within the US, jumps to 100ms once you cross the Atlantic into France. Not that’s the cause of what you are seeing, my point being you are “calling long distance” here.

Behellagh, I was under the impression that their servers were all in the US. Still, even if they have to go through the US to login and then go back across the Atlantic to servers; that’s poor execution on their part.

I am connecting to them through level3; you seem to be going in through Verizon Business class after coming off ALTER.

I’m need to look through some of the other pathpings provided; but I’m wondering if its a peering issue ANET has with Verizon.

I’m also from the US. In NYC. I recently got a new router, and switched from my previous one (switched from an Linksys WRT54GL with DD-WRT firmware to an ASUS RT-N65U stock firmware).

At first, I thought it was my router. But this isn’t the case for other games, or other applications using the net. Ran countless speed test, and everything was fine. Opened up Resource Monitor to check GW2 latency and it’s around 150ms-230ms. And this was in PvE alone! On some maps, I barely get any lag, and on others, I lag spike like every 5 seconds.

I did the path ping, here are the results,

everything looks fine though, I have no idea whats going on.

Wuffy,

it appears your ISP is blocking pathping; so it’s hard to see what is actually going on. =/

Just for common knowledge. “speed tests were fine” doesn’t mean much. It’s all about the route the internet traffic takes. The route to the speed test servers maybe clear; the route to the game may not be.

The issue remains the same. Lag is here for 3 days, I am in the US for more than 3 months and never experienced such lag before.

Well we have one person with problems with the EU servers. You have to help ANet to isolate and fix the problem. You can’t just say “it broke, fix it” because it’s not broken for everybody.

At least list which events you are having problems with. Which server, what zones, PvE, Fractals, WvW, PvP? And don’t say all because I’m pretty sure you haven’t checked everywhere tonight. Specificity is important.

There is no way I am going to help Anet solve the issue more than I already did. They are aware of the problem, multiples people are reporting it. Actually the game is really close to unplayable for me. If they don’t fix it soon, I’ll just walk my way to another MMO, they are plenty of them out there. I don’t have a blood relationship with Guild Wars 2. They don’t fix it, they lose money. Not me.

Multiple people have reported multiple lag issues at multiple locations. If it was “their server”(as in game server) everyone would be experiencing it. That is just not the case. I was playing on my server (Stormbluff Isle) and was just sent to an Overflow for Tequatl. Some people were complaining about “LAG” during the event; I was lag free. I have yet to have any lag issues over the past few days.

The issue could be one of their gateways into their enclave from certain providers; or their gateways are not load balancing properly. Or any number of issues. Until we find the commonalities; it can be hard to diagnose.

Xystus.3241

The problem with Latency issues or “LAG” in terms of connections; is to many different variables.

I’ve been trying to help people find commonalities. So far, I found 2 users going through Rogers/above/ALTER where packet loss was an issue. There are some, that are showing major packet loss coming from a backbone in France. Still, there are some that are showing issues within ArenaNet/NCSoft’s networks.

Unfortunately to many people are Angry, and their anger is “justified” by the large number network posts. 99% of the posts provide no data to work off and therefore are useless.

If we could find a specific gateway/router within ArenaNet’s network and point to it, that would go a LONG way, rather than just saying “FIX IT”.

What server are you on? While you do have some packet loss pre-ANET/NCSOFT space; it is tolerable.

However, this is not good:

18 230ms 5/ 100 = 5% 0/ 100 = 0% 64.25.32.9
95/ 100 = 95% |
19 —- 100/ 100 =100% 0/ 100 = 0% 64.25.32.26

I would open a trouble ticket with this information as it resides on their address space. The 100% packet loss can be ignored, as they are probably blocking the requests. But up to there, we see that node experiencing 95% loss.

Actually today I experienced massive lag for the first very time since headstart, till the point i just crashed 2 times in a row doing temples and one time doing shatterer, and each time i started having huge skill lag and was impossible to cast stuff in very crowded areas. Even before the last patch i did many times temples on Deso with a lot of ppl and never crashed or experienced something similar so yeah… Considering the complaints, I get ther’s some routing problem out there.

The crashing and routing issues could be two separate things. If you could, start a new thread and attach your crash file located here: C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Guild Wars 2\ArenaNet.log (something similar to that).

Now I got my first disconnet.. in SAB.. after loads of skill lag, being hit by the final boss invisibly.. lots of fun. This is time-gated material I can’t complete. I totally didn’t want some of the limited time weapon skins.

Anyway, hope I did this right:

Lothirieth,

Your issue appears to be the Tinet SpA and some massive packet dropping. This issue appears to be happening before it hits NCSoft’s address space.

Did you edit your post?… I thought I read something different and you saying I should start a ticket.

So what, we’re all suddenly experiencing problems post Tequatl and we’re all SoL?

Ya,

Apparently I forgot how to read After I went back to your screenshot I had to change my comment.

Yes and no. You are coming from the EU to servers hosted in the US. Why they decided this, I cannot say =/

What maybe happening; lag issues with Tinet that is just making one problem worse.

Edit again: I would start by submitting a trouble ticket to your ISP, but also submit one to ANET. NCSoft maybe able to work with the Tinet to resolve issues.

That is certainly how ANet’s tech support handling it. I know I am not the only one having this problem since the new content but they want me to run the diagnostic on my machine because to them the problem is on my end.

SOP for any support site. First check the client, then check the path with a network tool.

Anyway it’s not like support, some Joe/Jane sitting in front of a screen being forwarded to the next ticket and working off a script to select a previously written e-mail reply is going to able to fix the servers. The question is will all these tickets get aggregated and seen as a problem to be examined by someone who might be able to do something about it.

Exactly! I hope the issues do get aggregated. We need to provide information; commonalities to their techs. Saying “LAG” doesn’t help anyone or anything. Showing through simple tools that issues exist at common points, can help pinpoint the problem

And may its not them; maybe its you;

right, that’s why more and more people are suddenly complaining.. here and on map chats.

It’s a joke tbh. Then some Arena Net shill like Xystus.3241 comes in and blames spontaneous mass lag across all venues of the game reported by thousands of people as what, user error? Gtfo…

First of all, I do not see “thousands of people” reporting. I do see a large number.
There are a lot of players, like myself, who haven’t experienced one ounce of lag.

Internet traffic is routed like car traffic. People merge on to main highways to travel to common points. We saw this the other week with players from the NW United States. Level3 was having some major packet dropping issues. This issue has also existed in the past at the peering point with Level3 in Chicago. I’ve personally experienced this on several occasions. The worst I have ever experienced was back during my WoW raiding days; it lasted nearly a week and anyone in the Ohio/Penn/Ind/Mich/Ill, who were going through Chicago and down to the servers in Dallas, could not play. However, if any of us hopped on the servers that WoW had in Virgina, no lag existed.

Right now, we are seeing two different issues; some people whose connections report no issues and this is ANET’s problem. Others are experiencing lag; but showing large packet loss before they event get to the servers. This is appearing from many of the France players; for those in the US, it appears to be the connections from rogers/above/ALTER going down through the Washington DC area.

Now, why EU servers are hosted in the US, other than cost; I cannot see the logic of that.

You appear to having a 45% packet loss on Rogers with another 11% on above.net. I would submit a trouble ticket to your ISP and include the results from pathping.

Yesterday I played just fine, like most people who seem to be having this issue. Now I’m trying to play with my friend but after downloading the little patch, my connection to the game and GW2 servers seems to have tanked. The site and launcher are also slow to load, along with lag spikes ingame, but my connection elsewhere is normal.

After the new build a few minutes ago everything worked fine for a little while, then I lagged out again, and did a pathping to Tarnished Coast.

Avaruu, it appears the traffic(for pathping) is being blocked. However, nothing seems bad between you and the time you get to the qwest network. I would open a trouble ticket with ANET about the lag.

Thanx guys for the fast answers.

To OMNIBUS: my graphic card is GeForce GTX 650 TI Boost

The newest update to my nvidia geforce card caused my game to start crashing not sure if the problem is gw2 or nvidia but you should try taking out your geforce graphics card and using your onboard graphics card. If your game stops crashing after that you had the same issue as me. I’m playing on my crappy onboard card and low settings for awhile until there is a fix.

Also should mention, rolling back to a previous geforce driver didnt work for me. Even after a driver sweep. So just try removing it.

I found that the “GeForce 320.18 Driver WHQL 320.18 May 23, 2013” drivers have been the most stable for my card. It is a Geforce GTX 675M.

PlayNC is NCSoft’s space; it would be on their end. I would open a trouble ticket with ANET and give them those IP addresses. Hopefully they can then track the problem down. Note; this is not their game servers; but intermediate hops in between that DO belong to them.

I’m having the exact same problem. The game has become completely unplayable for me. Every single action in-game has at least 2-5 seconds of lag. Sometimes it’s far worse than that. Chat logs are even worse.

Note that this is happening for me everywhere in the game and not just in highly populated areas. It’s certainly worse in highly populated areas but it isn’t exclusive to them.

Most recent example: I just stood in front of a mithril ore node for about 10 seconds before my character even started mining it. Oddly enough, skills triggered almost instantly just a few seconds before that.

Please, please, please post a pathping;

This does 2 things.
1) Determines common nodes people are going through
2) If it is Anet’s issue; it can help them fix it, if the same IP keeps coming up.

It seems as though after this most recent patch, I notice a huge lag spike when doing anything outside of tequatl. I cant even farm ores without lag spikes, I cant hit enemies without at least a 20 second delay. Also If I move to far from my starting position I get disconnected.

Please fix this, there are a lot of users with the same issue. Your QA better step it up a notch.

And may its not them; maybe its you; maybe its any of the hops between you and anet? Get the server’s IP by typing “/ip” in chat. Then in Windows, click start and type in “cmd” and hit enter. Then type “pathping ip” and post the results. Some users(specifically NW United States) have been having issues with Level3.

Nope, I just made a fresh install of GW2 today, but last time a week or so ago I played the game I didn’t have this issue. I have some integrated sound card and finding recent drivers for it is quite difficult.

Same exact issue here. I did the diag suggested on the connectivity support page and found that everything was 0% except for one specific ping on both tests.

Test 1
10 —- 25/ 25 =100% 18/ 25 = 72% 206-127-157-94.plaync.com [206.127.157.94]

Test 2
9 —- 25/ 25 =100% 20/ 25 = 80% 64.25.32.26

No idea what this means, but thought it would be worthwhile to note. Maybe others having this issue are experiencing the same result.

I created a Support Ticket to get some insight. Hopefully I hear back on that soon or perhaps we get a reply on this thread.

That belongs to them and therefore is their issue.

Getting massive lag after most recent patch

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Xystus.3241

Xystus.3241

First of all, the problem is not fully defined yet. There could be any umpteen number of problems.

First, get the IP address of Crystal Desert; ingame type /ip in the Chat.

In Windows, go to Start and type in “cmd” and hit enter. A command prompt should appear and then type in “pathping <ip>”. This may take a bit, but post the results. If it shows up clear; we know its server based. If it shows dropped packet’s on Anet’s network, it something they need to fix. If the problem occurs on the backbone or another hop between you and GW2 servers; not much can be done. Many people can take similar routes, and therefore be experiencing the same issue.

I’m getting the same issue, especially in highly populated areas. Today I was unable to fight Tequatl because of extreme lag.
I’ve tested my connection using Speedtest and it’s fine, so it’s just GW2.

That doesn’t mean squat. That is like saying “Eastbound I94 is at a standstill, but Northbound I65 is clear; its the car’s fault.”

Start with a pathping to the IP address of the server and see if any hops along the way are dropping packets. <5% should be tolerable. You can find the IP address by typing in /ip in the game’s chat window.

Now if NCSoft/Anet’s address space is the problem; then they need to fix it. If the problem occurs before their address space, then something else has to be done.
