Just for reference; the game cannot bluescreen a computer. Windows 7 has several layers of protection built in. The game cannot directly access drivers which cannot directly access hardware. If you are seeing Bluescreens, its most likely a driver issue.
GW2 maybe bringing the error to light, but the game by itself, cannot bluescreen.
Emery, are you running 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7?
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 8.00 GB
Total Physical Memory 2.99 GB
Available Physical Memory 1.41 GB
This seems to point towards 32-bit; as you are not addressing all 8GBs. You should be running 64-bit windows.
Now, this may not solve your issue if the processes itself it hitting its memory cap.
OOM = Out of Memory. For now, try lowering settings; specifically WvW settings. With the removal of culling, you are hitting a hard memory cap for the process. Basically to many models at once at to high of a detail. Maybe try “medium” for WvW.
One post from Anet about this? That’s all? Do they only have 3 people working for them or something?
Seriously, Anet customer service/tech support sucks.
Tech Support forums are for community involvement. They may post now and again, but if you want to work with their technical support, open a support ticket.
OOM is you are running “Out of Memory”. Try lowering your graphics settings. Start with the WvW settings and take them down to “Medium”.
Make sure the files are not marked “Read Only”.
All that crazy stuff was happening last night. On top of that, I had a bug where I could not use any of my skills (normal Guardian hammer skills). Weapon swapping did nothing. I Had to get hit by a wave to use my weapons again.
Most likely either a corrupt local.dat file or corrupt install.
1) Delete the file
%APPDATA%\Guild Wars 2\local.dat
2) Use the -repair option when running the game. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Command_line_arguments
I’ve been playing Fractals for a while but haven’t noticed that killing tenatacles damages him.
Does anyone know how much damage killing a tentacle deals?I’ve played almost daily since head start and I didn’t know it until like a month or so ago.
I think it’s slightly less than a crystal but you can do them faster. I don’t even bother with crystals unless there’s one right at my feet. If you’re wearing zerk and you know how to manage blinds/evades, you can just go off and kill them on your own. in a typical pug you’ll kill a tentacle in the same time it takes the rest of the group to kill one, so you’re definitely doing more damage to the maw than they are.
Very true! I usually do this on my thief. Dagger/Pistol. Use #3 to keep it blind and burn it down so fast. In most random pugs, I can usually solo 3 in the time it takes the other 4 to take out 2.
kitten that speed of light constant! :P
Yep.
So far, I’ve been good with my connection. In the past, I’ve had issues(only 3 or 4 times over 2004-2011) with playing WoW going to Blizzard’s servers in Austin, TX over L3. Most likely was do to some network changes and usually resolved within a week; once things settled down and they could see how their changes effected traffic.
For issues to exist this long are highly unusual; you are right, Level3 would have noticed/fixed something by now.
Just for fun:
A quick distance calculation between points on a map Malaysia->Seattle->LA->Denver->Dallas is going to be over 10,000 miles. Which, would give you an absolute best possible ping of about 53ms. Or ~106ms round trip per packet. Again, this is direct line of site. Add in all the overhead/extra hops/routing, 200ms+ is very likely.
(edited by Xystus.3241)
The craziest thing about the lag is that it hijacks my entire computer. I can set a ping graph to google.com and never spike above 150ms. As soon as I turn on GW2 and log onto a character, my pings to google start timing out with the lag spikes.
Only application having this issue, and it seems to be client-side.
The game can’t take over your hardware. Windows prevents that from happening. Most likely, its a network card driver issue. Have you updated your network card’s drivers recently? Are you on a wired connection or wireless?
As you can see from Kanderous, as soon as he hits Level3, his ping goes to hell. You’re probably hitting Level3 in Denver as well and having the same issue. Sadly is a Level3 issue and nothing your ISP or Anet can do. Yet, we cannot be 100% sure without something to test it; right now AT&T is blocking the most simple method. Your ISP will only really cover you as far as to the next major backbone.
Again, its very hard to pinpoint; if this is a network lag issue; it could be anywhere. I know a lot of people are on my server and complaining about the lag; yet, I haven’t had any issues. This usually points to a common problem further upstream for a group of players. If it were everyone; then it would be Anet for sure.
Kanderous is null of this issue as he isn’t based in the states but in the Philippines….. So there’s valid reason behind the sudden jump from 29ms which is based in Santa Rosa, Philippines to Level3 in Seattle….. Considering the majority of servers of large corporations tend to be on Level3 (SoftLayer for instance), it’s not an issue with Level 3, as if it were, the company would have resolved it as soon as an issue popped up (if you consider the size of Level3 as a whole, they would lose too much from downtime or issue).
EDIT: Ok this is clearly stupid, the people you have listed under US West….. First 2 right off the bat, from the Philippines…. 3rd… from Panama… The 4th is from MALAYSIA… You want good ping on a U.S server instead of 200+? How about you live in the U.S…. Speaking of U.S, out of the 3 players you have listed as “U.S Players”, 2 of them are Canadian…. That would explain a jump from 40ms to 120ms once hitting the NY server.
“Yea, I live in Antarctica so when I connect to a server in Dallas, TX, If I dont get under 50 ping, then something is wrong with THAT server because I’m too much of a kitteng idiot to understand how this works”
Should I call out OP now? The temptation is far too strong
Never bothered to look at the origin of the source IP, but route it was taking. I assumed.. you know what that means.
However, just because they are coming from Canada, doesn’t mean it should be jumping 80ms. It’s dependent on distance, packet loss rate, and how the traffic is prioritized/routed. Someone coming from Ottawa shouldn’t see much of a difference than Portland, Maine who go through NY; assuming similar number of hops/connection speed/quality of carrier.
As for Level3, it maybe not be a “hardware issue”. It could be simply changing priority on packets or changing how certain packets are routed. While normal 80/443/other common port/protocol traffic is unaffected, random unprivileged port (6112/6600?) may be. There are to many variables to say it is XYZ that is causing the issue.
I was just trying to find similarities for people with the issues; since they were flooding the forums and blaming the latest patch. Which I knew wasn’t the issue.
I never had any lag issues, so I’ve been playing happily
Delete your local.dat file. its located under “APPDATA\Guild Wars 2”
I’m 99% sure its a static amount.
Glad that helped!
First, delete your local.dat, located in “APPDATA\Guild Wars 2” (you can type that string in, minus the quotes into the Start search bar).
and then run your game with the -repair option. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Command_line_arguments
The fact is:
The windows operating system is setup to protect the hardware from applications. The game has to interact with one layer that passes on down the chain. Basically, the game cannot directly access the drivers and because of HAL (Hardware Abstraction layer), the drivers cannot access the hardware. That is why we had all the driver problems going from XP to Vista.
The game cannot and will not directly cause a BSOD. Sorry, but it’s the truth. It sounds more like a conflict with a driver or library; most likely something with DX9.
Not sure, but on my laptop, if I hit Fn+1, all my fans go to full speed.
Also, I use this as a laptop stand: http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/product.php?product_id=3075&product_name=NotePal%20X3
Nope. ***15chars***
The local.dat file has been relocated.
The new location is at:
C:\Users\MyComputerUserName\AppData\Roaming\Guild Wars 2“AppData” is a hidden folder.
If you require assistance to enable showing of hidden files and folders on your computer then follow these steps:Make hidden files visible
- Browse your My Computer to: “C:\Users\YourComputerUserName”
- Then in the window menus (File-Edit-View-Tools-Help), click on “Tools” and then select “Folder Options…”
- In the window that pops up, click the “View” tab
- Select to “Show hidden files, folders and drives” and click ‘OK’ (attached image)
- You should now see the “AppData” folder in your file listing
Wow… I missed that they moved it. Thanks!
At least with Windows Vista, 7 or 8: yes.
The kernel is built with several layers of protection. The game CANNOT directly access the hardware to cause those types of issues. Again, like the previous person pointed out, it maybe exposing a weakness or fault in a driver.
Most newer games are built around DirectX11. GW2, is based around DX9. You may have a corrupt install of DX9 libraries. Which could explain the crashes in GW2 only.
I would follow this post about using system file checker:
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/ht/sfc-scannow.htm
and ensure DX is fully updated:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35
Also, you may want to try to uninstall/reinstall your graphical drivers.
(edited by Xystus.3241)
What operating system are you running?
can you post your crash log? I am not sure where Anet saves it on macs.
That isn’t a “corrupted” image, but a failure to render it. Try uninstalling/reinstalling your graphics drivers.
Obal,
I don’t even know what to say…
Could you post a crash log? It should be under My Documents\Guild Wars 2\ArenaNet.log or something like that.
I can’t, but can you explain why a lot of others aren’t experiencing these issues?
Again, the internet doesn’t work like you think. Its not your ISP directly to ANET; there is many other networks in between. It could be how any one of them routes traffic. You maybe able to influence your end and ANET their end; but if its in between, the companies really don’t care.
I have seen a dozen or so reports from players coming from the West coast, traveling through Level3, and their packet loss and ping is awful. Mainly from the LA-Denver route. Yet, I pickup Level3 in Chicago and we both merge in Dallas, TX and then peer with ANET. My connection has remained 100% clear; even though we share the same hop on Level3 in Dallas and others are experiencing massive lag.
A few, not enough to make a valid assumption, I’ve seen coming from the East coast seem to be using Verizon backbone (ALTER) and ANET peers with Verizon Business class and not directly with their backbone. That peering location seems to be an issue.
You need to register for a separate ticketing account.

Just need an account. You can download it and play; no need to worry.
I’ve seen a lot of issues recently where I have frequent 1-4 second lockups (and with frequent I mean many times per minute, sometimes almost continuously on/off) in networking. This is not something I’ve noticed until (perhaps) the last (Teq) patch, at least not with any frequency. It often makes the game more or less unplayable.
I also seem to route through level 3 but as noted, any trace route that includes them might be incorrect because they ignore or deprioritize ICMP (apparently that’s a thing…).
I ran the diag test (see attached). A ping to one of the ip’s I connect also does show packet loss. It does seem to be more of an issue later at night or with more people around (Teq, or champ train in Queensdale for example):
64.25.40.116 ping statistics —-
48 packets transmitted, 44 received, 8% packet loss, time 47078ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 57.947/58.584/60.137/0.548 ms
NeoTron, welcome to the wonderful world of routing. You can do quite a lot of stuff based on ports/protocols to give priority/preference to one packet of internet data over another. 99.99% of the time, when you see 100% packet loss, the protocol is blocked. Even with protocols being prioritized, large packet losses can still point to an overall issue.
You could have a 100 different ISPs but if you use the same backbone structure; it doesn’t matter. Your ISP does not directly connect you to ArenaNet. It passes you off to other companies, who pass you off to other companies until you reach a destination. Its a complete CF and a nightmare for getting things fixed.
I am coming in from SW Ohio on Time Warner Cable. I have about ~10 in this area with me, that I know personally. We have had zero connection issues. I’ve done Tequatl, Fractals, Dungeons, all the other open world bosses; in overflows and on my home server. I’ve done Tequatl with people complaining about the lag, yet I was lag free.
Every here seems to be having high packet loss on the Level3’s backbone. Check out the diags, some of you are hit 50% before getting to Anet’s servers.
Rather than just say “same problem”, that isn’t going to help. Let’s start posting system specs; drivers versions, etc…

Unfortunately your pingpath doesn’t show anything; because its blocked past your router.
Just for reference, speed tests mean jack squat. Its all about the “roads” your internet “traffic” takes. The streaming HD maybe coming from Seattle, porno from Wisconson. While GW2 is Texas. Therefore it is not a good comparison.
I’m not saying it isn’t guild wars; but at the same time, there are other people who aren’t lagging.
We’ve seen a lot of issues from Level3 and Verizon over the past few weeks. Level3 mainly coming from the west coast to Texas. Verizon/Anet having peering issues.
Okay, fair enough. So I am assuming this applies to every other game; such as battle.net, LOL, Steam online games as well?
Because GW2 honestly is the only thing that is lagging horribly bad for me at the moment. I have had zero issues with GW2 the last couple days, and before that I had random spikes here and there before that since the Tequatl patch.
Yes. Their game servers are not on the same network or physical location. You may be able to connect to any of those just fine and not others.
The internet is very much like the US highway system. For data to travel from source to destination, it takes several roads; the hops between points are like the exits/entrances between highways. Your road maybe clear going from Minnesota to New York; but there may be a fatal wreck along the way from Minnesota to Texas. Just because the path to New York is clear; doesn’t mean the path to Texas is.

Lost a lot of my interest playing, due to the lag in the game.
Unplayable, and the second I leave gw2, I test my speed. Perfectly fine.
Try downloading a large file. Perfectly fine.
Try streaming a video in HD, loads in seconds.
All my other games are working as they should ( Online )Seriously, what’s going on ? I can’t even PvP either.
And I literally just formatted my comp ( To get a fresh start. ).
I should not be getting this insane lag. It does seem to be a select bunch of players too.
As I said in my last post. Speed tests mean squat. Internet traffic routes means everything.

Alot of ‘cheap’ gaming laptops also have poor desgin for the chassis meaning they just get very hot anyway and cant be used to extended periods. Be carefull when buying a laptop, make sure u alocate enough money for a true gaming laptop and dont just look at specs, check the laptop chassis is designed with good airflow.
All of this ^^^^^^^^^^^
Most LT’s are not designed to take the stress/heat of a demanding game.
Very much true. There can be a big difference between an ACER “gaming” laptop and something more custom/high end.
I game on a Sager Notebook that works very well. This game is demanding. I find if I limit my FPS to 60, I rarely go over 55c.
Basically the texture is not loading. a -repair would be good, also try deleting your local.dat file located under C:\Users\username\Documents\Guild Wars 2\
When you say “Crash”, you mean the application closed suddenly, correct? Can you post your crash log located at C:\Users\username\Documents\Guild Wars 2\ArenaNet.log
In your ingame settings; what is your audio device set to? Does it just say “default”? Try setting it specifically to the audio device you want to use.
Your local.dat file is most likely corrupted. It is located under: C:\Users\username\Documents\Guild Wars 2\
Exit the game, delete the file and relaunch the game.
The problem with this game: it used DX9; doesn’t take advantage of DX11. People have some beefy systems and still don’t perform all that well.
I would try and use the “auto detect” settings first under the graphics options, rather than maxing everything out.
We are supposed to get some code optimization starting soon; hopefully.
CPU. Considering this game is CPU intensive; I would look at that first.
Maybe? What model of AMD Athlon 2?
Probably a bug. The other unlimited use pick harvests Orichalcum just fine.
1) This should go in game bugs, not technical support
2) I tested Wilderness Knowledge (VI) and its working for me. I see LR go from 40→32, QZ 60→48 and Entangle 150→120.
Wilderness Survival is the trait line, and does not offer reduction in recharge; only the (VI) talent.
