Does playing a Prof. change item drop rates?

Zackie.8923

i actually want to believe that the choices you make about your character’s background (say human nobility) might make your drop rates crappy

but on the contrary, if you choose slums as a start, maybe zommoros will pity you and give you lots of precursors.

this might explain why RNG favours some and not the others.

You can still do that, just depends on the armor piece as to how the channels are set-up

you can’t dye the patterns on the dark armor, for example, the shoulders and the chest.

you can only dye the paper sticking out of the shoulders and the sides on the chest.

Tips for PUGs (including Slick & Clockwork)

In all my 5 runs, killing Sparki first was easier. I’ve done with pugs and guildies.

I’ve seen this a lot in further readings of the forum.
Focusing either Sparki or Slick seems to both have pros and cons, which I feel ANet deserves credit for pulling off.

I still feel it’s better to do Slick first in PUGs because focusing Sparki first presumes everyone can dodge Slick’s oil AoE efficiently until Sparki’s dead, which is rarely the case.

you should melee clockheart.

These tips are for PUGs, who aren’t sure if the party members are playing optimally.
Tips you can tell and everyone can follow easily without knowing all of Clockwork’s cues and animations.

Additionally, going melee means everyone sucks at pulling clones which are often across the room, and Clockwork will invariably end up on the edge of the room which increases the travel time between holo-explosions.

If you’re using a ranged weapon:

  • there’s no swap time
  • you’re already closer to the clone
  • the clockwork is already walking toward the clone via aggro

Expecting everyone to know all the cues and animations is the most irritatingly elitist thing a player can do. Don’t be that guy.

i am a pug

it is still better to all go melee on clockheart.

ranging him is worse because if you down on a geargrind, chances are you are dead.

if you can dodge his geargrind, then you can dodge his aoe slam.

even caithe tells you to melee him. so is caithe an elitist?

High survivability, excellent damage, wanted in groups all the time. Really no cons

As a owner of 2 fully geared Guardians and over 4.5k hours on them, they’re very solid for PVE, but then again PVE pretty much any set up works there(Dungeons are pretty meh). SPVP and WvW they have the cons of not being mobile and having to gear and spec a certain way to kill anything above a average player. Most guardians are pigeon hold into a bunker builds. especially in Spvp. If you want to deal damage then you have to gear and spec for it. If you want to survive then you have to do the same, as opposed to other classes. It’s pretty easy to face roll guardians that aren’t exactly healway specced. Especially with Engi, necro and, faceroll condi spam builds or even mesmers.

i am just curious, why do you need to make 2 charr guardians?

5. LEGENDARY CLOCKWORK

ii) Spread out and use Ranged Weapons when it has armor

  • Going in Melee is just a stupid way of saying “HEY, PLEASE USE YOUR SLAM/MULTI-SLAM TO WIPE THE PARTY!” Don’t be an idiot.
  • I heard there’s a way to prevent the multi-slam, but do you really want to experiement with a PUG?

you should melee clockheart.

even caithe will tell you to melee him.

if he raises his hand, just dodge.

for multispam, use protection stability aegis dodge invul block etc.

ranging him is asking him to wipe your party with the gear grinds.

get rid of the invul with holo kill near him.

if he does his aoe spam ~3 times, floor will become electrical and thats when you have to survive.

so it is important to kill holo to stop the whole floor from becoming electrical.

What's your perfect MMO?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Zackie.8923

Zackie.8923

Construct a MMO’s core mechanics (artwork, combat etc) from existing MMOs. I’ll start as an example.

1. The quests and storytelling of RuneScape.
2. The combat, the world, the dungeons and progression of GW2
3. The cutscenes of FF14
4. The large scale group content of WoW
5. The character design and gear of Vindictus

1. RuneScape does something which I havn’t seen in any other MMO. Instead of having one storyline the player follows, it has a series of questlines which are separate in nature but intertwining in events, sewn together by an overarching plot which is elegantly and slowly unveiled to the player. It’s just beautifully immersive.

2. Tyria is beautiful, I don’t need to say anything more. The combat has just the right balance between an action MMO and a traditional one to get the best of both worlds.

The dungeons are very well structured, with puzzles and other tasks to break up boss fights and mob trashing. The thing about progress in this game is that it’s mostly well…. progressive. Take Ascended items for example, instead of waiting for a RNG boss drop with a 0.00001 chance, you know how far you’re away to crafting it.

3+4. I don’t think I need to say anything.
5. Despite everything else being done terribly in that game, the gear and characters look awesome. Each endgame armour which came out before Season 2 were unique and intricately designed, down to the very little details like how chains on them moved and how that one armour with a cape’s cape swirled as you ran.

runescape has an epic storyline?

wow, as a former runescape player since the beginning, i only know how to farm guards using prayer till no tomorrow lol.

yes, casting retreat will make your weapon active, but you can stow it immediately after that to prevent auto attacks, assuming you haven’t shot.

not having a target selected when casting retreat also helps.

but oddly, i no longer auto attack when i cast retreat anymore. might be a recent patch or something.

There is "Luck", and then there is "RNG Luck"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Zackie.8923

Zackie.8923

It is possible that the random number generator (RNG) of Guild Wars 2 is borked.

WARNING: Very Technical Stuff ahead.

I have worked in the games industry and also read the source code of open source game projects. It is not unusual to find game code where the RNG is implemented badly. Sometimes the programmers have used a good algorithms from e.g. Knuth’s The Art of Computer Programming (TAOCP). While this book has efficient algorithms, they have several times been botched by incompetence or mistake of the game programmers. The programmers sometimes do some “magic” stuff to the pseudo random number returned by the RNG and do not realize that you have be extremely careful not to botch it up. Sometimes the RNG implementation has minor programming mistake. It will give you random numbers, but their distribution is far from random.

A lot of programming languages, for example C, C++ and Java, are using linear congruentatial pseudo-random number generator.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linear_congruential_generator

As these as inbuilt into the popular programming languages, it is not surprising that many games use them. Guild Wars 2 is probably written in C++ and it might use this as well. I really hope it doesn’t!

Linear Congruential Generator is very fast way to get pseudo-random numbers. Unfortunately the random numbers aren’t very random at all. Depending on the seed value it is possible to get degenerate cases, where every second number is even and every second is odd. The programmers then often do tricks like discarding the lowest bits to get more randomness. This is NOT a good. Instead they should use a better RNG, like Mersenne Twister.

You need a good expert proficient in both mathematics and programming to analyze whether the RNG is working as it should. I worked for an organization (yes, not a company ) which is making money game machines (slot machines, video pokers etc). They had a person, who was responsible to the true randomness of the RNG. It is vital for such organization to make sure that the numbers are truly random and nobody is able to predict them. Despite all this one game programmer had added one line of C code, which just limited the number of random numbers from a huge number of randoms into smaller set of numbers (very typical thing for programmers to do, to get random numbers of just certain numerical range). As result some numbers became 20% more common than others. Luckily our internal testing measures caught that error before that money game machine was placed in public.

Without access to GW2 source code we can just speculate whether their RNG is borked or working as it should.

PS. Over 2000 hours of GW2. All 8 professions played to level 80, except guardian, which is still level 62. Only few random exotic drops, no precursors (despite using the Mystic Forge with tons of level 80 rare weapons), 2 random ascended rings (1 from fractals, 1 from many hundred WXP chests). I have never gotten an item (dye, rune, sigil, exotic) worth even 10 gold. Every single drop in game has been worth less than 10 g.

i had thought about something like this a long time ago, less the technical parts.

i never had any precursor after 1000+ hours in. Threw 200g into zomorros too.

i thought it might have to do with the personal story traits that we choose at the start of character creation.

or this account is just plain unlucky.

@Death – fair enough then. Blood did use the mace/otrch build example to out DPS a hammer build running AH. it’s hard to compare this way though since you’re both advocating different builds. at least DPS can be quantified, and only to an extent. whereas survivability, cannot be as easily quanitified, if at all.

Blood was mainly stating that with 10/30/x/x/x you get 300 precision (plus another 15% RHS), 100 power, and 20% extra damage, and would out damage a build without. and namely, if one’s build or play didn’t need AH or full 30 in valor to survive. but again, as survivability can’t be measured on paper, it’s up to the player to choose what they want to play.

i do want to say the damage increase you get from those trait changes can be quite significant. also sword auto if you’re going for highest, sustained DPS, imo.

@OP – do check out the link swiftpaw linked earlier.

I actually mentioned already that the extra precision is offset by the loss of 30% crit damage.

Also the fact that mace simply does lower base damage than GS and attacks slower. The symbol for GS also far out damages the mace symbol. Skill #2 for GS out damages torch 5. Skill #3 for GS is only marginally less damage than Torch #4.

This shows that skill by skill the GS out paces mace/torch by far.

It’s arguable that at best the dps difference is trivial whichever ends up higher in this scenario.

The main difference here is that my setup would still have the AH for survivability while he does not. This shows that he literally sacrificed survivability to gain little to nothing in return which was my point this entire time.

i thought gs #3 hits like an auto but torch #4 hits like a truck?
