Mystic Forge Recipe: Immobulus

It is meant to be rare, yeah, although I think that Giant Eyes ARE ridiculously hard to get. Prices are only still reasonable because Lidless Eye, Immobulus and I forget what was the third item aren’t that popular as skins.

Personally, I’d like to see ANet make the following change:

Killing a Giant or Risen Giant will always give you a guaranteed Giant Eye, similar to how killing Veteran Karkas will always give you a Karka Shell. Given how rare Giants are in this game, I don’t think this would flood the market with too much supply.

Watchwork Pick: Why No Response?

I bought one because I needed another for my Home Instance-parked mule. With 6 mining nodes to mine every day now, he was burning through standard picks too quickly and replacing them was becoming a hassle. If the Molten Pick had still been around instead of the Watchwork Pick, I’d have bought that.

And despite having bought one, I’d STILL prefer it if the sprocket harvesting was removed from the Watchwork Pick. I stand by my claim that it is a direction ANet should not be going in.

From using the Watchwork Pick over the last few days, I can confirm that:

1. It DOES still give special bonus items like gems or 5 extra Quartz from strikes. (I got a gem AND a sprocket from the same strike on the Copper Node in my Home Instance.)

2. It DOES still allow for extra strikes on a node.

3. I have still yet to confirm whether or not it actually removes the chance to get 2 × 1 material from a single strike, at least on normal nodes.

But back to the topic at hand, I’m getting quite concerned about their silence over this matter too. Sauzo’s experience is worrying, but it may be a result of them not having yet come to a conclusion over what to do about this situation.

What we’re mainly concerned about is the precedent that this pick sets. It sets the stage for power creep with gathering tools, since all future tools that ANet releases will either need to match or exceed what the Watchwork Pick can do, since players won’t buy it otherwise.

Then there’s the fact that we now have a gem store item that is undeniably better than anything players can normally obtain in game. The gem store previously used to sell items that offered only convenience or cosmetic benefits (and for the few items that did offer small benefits, such as boosters, you could acquire them through in game means); the Watchwork Pick breaks this rule.

I suspect that the Electrum Ingots will require 20/20/10 of the aforementioned ingots, and that the Basic Ore Nodes were intended to inject additional supply into the economy by people harvesting them whenever they harvested their daily nodes.

Why would the fact that something is tradable diminish its prestige? If you earned it yourself, you KNOW you got it the “hard way”. Why do you care what some random stranger thinks about how you got it? Get rewards because YOU think it’s cool or that it looks good on you, not because other people think it’s cool. Public opinion changes all the time, but at the end of the day, it’s you who has to live with the choice.

As an example, back in GW1 I earned my Legendary Survivor title on my Paragon by taking him through all 3 campaigns, both Normal Mode and Hard Mode. Then, Eye of the North came out, and the title got trivialised by Fronis dungeon runs. Was I upset? Heck no. I had the satisfaction of knowing that I got it the hard way, and nobody can ever take that away from me. I don’t care if someone looked at me and says that I probably just did Fronis runs; I don’t have to prove anything to him. I got the title for my own satisfaction, not to show it off to strangers.

And besides, even if someone did just farm the gold and buy the item, they still had to put in a lot of work to get it. (Maybe more. If you did Fractals level 21 for the first time and got a lucky Fractal skin drop, does that mean you earned the skin more than the guy who had to farm for 100+ hours to get the gold to buy it from you?) Is that work somehow worth less than yours? Even if they just opened their wallet and bought gems to trade for gold, they’re still giving up something of value.

So why do people still fail marionette?

Warden 3 is where most attempts fail, in my experience. The bombs AND the Warden’s leaps one-shot you (unless you have a very tanky build), so there’s very little margin for error. What’s worse is that the bombs don’t show an AoE radius, so you have no way of telling if you’re at a safe distance or not.

Finally, you sometimes get those unfortunate scenarios where 2 or 3 people zone up right into the Warden’s bombs/leaps. They get downed/killed, and you basically can’t recover from that without a lucky Warbanner.

As someone who doesn’t really like PvP myself, I can understand the dislike from players who want PvE and PvP to remain separate. At the same time though, from a design perspective, it DOES make good sense for updates like this to be introduced. There will be a portion of PvE’ers who have never tried WvW before, and may find their interest piqued after this LS. (Or vice versa.) If you really don’t like it, that’s fine, and you’re perfectly entitled to stick to PvE/PvP only. But having “exhibition days” to encourage people to mingle is always a good thing. Too much separation leads to disconnect from each other, and an “us vs them” mentality is not a good thing for a community to have in the long haul if we’re all playing the same game.

We melted away in different directions to try and lure him back, and sure enough, he came back for a third try, but retreated when we tried to catch him.

However, this time instead of Savage Leaping away, he Savage Leaped TO us. Obviously he forgot to deselect us as a target before using the skill. XD We quickly immobilised and spiked him down; I can imagine him facepalming over his error.

You never get two separate ores from a single hit though. It is always delivered as a package of “2 iron ore”. Plant node harvesting is the same. Wood is the only exception to this rule, where it will give you 2 × 1 logs on a “critical harvest” rather than 1 × 2 logs.

That said, now I’m not certain if I’ve EVER received “2 iron ore” from a normal node. (From Rich Veins, yes, as you pointed out, Rogue.) I’ve gotten extra strikes from a normal node before, but that’s a function of the WvW bonus, not the pick.

Again, we really do need the devs to come in and tell us how exactly this is supposed to work. :/

Yeah, they COULD introduce underwater Super weapons, although I think that seems unlikely given the general unpopularity of underwater weapons. Plus, having only 3 new weapon skins (along with presumably Red weapon skins for World 3 Tribulation Mode), would seem like a poor offering for SAB players.

I think it’s more likely that they will bring back all of the old Super weapon skins. Either that, or they introduce an alternative SAB-themed weapon set. (Maybe a SAB armor set?)

Refund on Molten Alliance Mining Pick

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Zaxares.5419

Zaxares.5419

This pick is 1000 gems and robs me of a portion of my ore for an item that self-deflates in value because of this pick.

this pick does not rob you of anything. if you mine an iron ore with it, you get 3 iron ore and 0.6 sprockets (I assume it’s 20% per chance and not per node?) the sprocket has clearly been identified as in addition to the ore you normally get.

Except you do lose ore because every ore hit also ha(d)s a chance of yielding an additional ore. So you could hit a regular iron ore three times and end up with 5 iron ore. Now, you will hit it thrice and you will ALWAYS get 3 iron ore and 2 sprockets.

For anything short of copper and mithril, each such event loses you 1s+.

Has this actually been confirmed by a dev? If so, then I’ll retract my initial opposition and say that the new pick IS balanced (although the way the pick works should be CLEARLY communicated because I can foresee people buying the pick not understanding how it works.)

If not, and this is just observational anecdotes, then I’ll continue to be sceptical.

Watchwork Pick: Non-inflammatory please

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Zaxares.5419

As I mentioned in the other thread, I am firmly against this new functionality of the Watchwork Pick. It sets a bad precedent where gem store items have better functionality than anything a player could normally get in the game, and it also raises the spectre of power creep for similar items in the future. Future unlimited tools will have to match or exceed what the Watchwork Pick offers, or players simply won’t buy it, which basically traps ANet on this path. Who’s to say that a new unlimited salvage kit that gives +1 Rare Mats/Ectos/Dark Matter per salvage isn’t a possibility in the future, for example?

Gem store items should stick to convenience and cosmetic benefits only.

Well, I defended these new events at first..

in The Origins of Madness

Posted by: Zaxares.5419

Zaxares.5419

The above comment got me thinking. What if the number of successful platforms altered how much the power level got increased? Currently, a failure means the bar shoots up 20%, regardless of whether it was a 4/5 near miss or a 0/5 uber wipe.

My suggestion – the bar increases by 4% for each platform that failed to destroy their Regulator. This means that if each attempt only missed it by the slimmest of margins (and if the lanes are good about stopping all Watchworks from getting through), they effectively have 20+ attempts to destroy the Marionette. This gives players more breathing room, and also serves as a way to spur on greater effort if they can see that they’re only missing out by a hair’s breadth.

Personally speaking, I like the new orange markers. It’s VERY visible and easy to see, which helps a lot in the chaos of a tense fight.

That said, I can also understand the OP’s point of view, so I propose a compromise. We get a new graphical toggle that lets us choose one of the following:

1. All hostile AoE markers use the old red circle style.
2. All hostile AoE markers use the new orange style.
3. Only certain boss attacks use the new orange style, distinguishing it between “This attack will hurt, but if you’re tough enough you can shrug it off” and “This attack will one-shot you. DODGE” attacks.

Pets/minions/illusions getting hit by the Mari’s attacks does NOT invalidate the achievement. I have gotten Lightfoot (on my Mesmer), Sidestepper (Ranger) and Muter (Necro) and I know for a fact that my summons all got smashed by the Marionette at least once during the fight.

I suspect that the hidden requirement of “you can’t be downed” is what’s stopping people from getting the achievement. Or perhaps they’re getting hit by the Mari’s attacks while they zone in; it doesn’t do any damage as they’re invulnerable while zoning, but it still counts against the achievement.

Also bear in mind that until the next balance patch, I’m not sure if two on-swap sigils can proc at the same time. So if you were using a Shield with your Scepter, and the Shield also has a on-swap sigil (Renewal, for example), the Shield might be triggering and stopping the Scepter from doing so.
