GW2 is not an MMORPG. It is, maybe a MMOFPS. There is no RPG in GW2 because there is no freedom to create anything other than cookie cutter toons. And at that there is a desire to make all classes the same. Take away the holy-trinity and every toon just becomes same old same old.
GW1 had WAY more RPG to it, way more Co-op and WAY more community.
GW1 had a ton of cookie cutter toons, you load a build from a template code and you were ready to go. GW2 has more flexiblity because any class can be any part of the (former) holy trinity. Guardians can be tanks, healers, or dps; Same with other classes, there are even new combinations people are coming up with. GW1 was more restricted IMO following the holy trinity model.
this is not true, gw1 had tons and tons of builds and synergies, if we are going to define it by the cookie cutter builds,
gw2 usually has a slight variation on 2 to 3 cookie cutters per proffesion with 8 proffesions, lets call that 24 cookie cutters heck lets say there are 5, that would still only give us 40.this is the list of great pve cookie cutter builds in gw1
http://gwpvx.gamepedia.com/Category:Great_working_PvE_builds
it numbers 133.so comparing cookie cutter to cookie cutter, gw1 still wins.
To support phys…
In GW2 you basically choose which weapon you want to play, – and that’s pretty much the build. (Calling things “builds” in this game, actually kind of sickens me)
A GS on a warrior has 5 skills, you can’t change those, you build around them as best as you can. So a GS warrior will always work like a GS warrior…
In GW1, you were able to pick your skills… so potentially two warriors with a sword/shield would have completely different builds and would work in different manners. And that’s not even getting into having the ability to switch between secondary professions…
Sorry but the skill/build system in GW1 has way more depth than GW2.
And like phys also mentioned. The intent of having such an over-simplified system for GW2 was to make it easier to balance things – which, let’s be honest, they’re failing at (+ considering that noteworthy balance changes come at 6 month iterations… ).
@Noah
Basically, GW2 as a successor lacks depth in very department (story, builds, even endgame) in comparison to it’s predecessor GW1.
Many GW1 fans, including myself, fell for the GuildWars title in the GuildWars 2. Hence the frustration for what could have been.

I will be more explicit with my jokes in the future.
:| Man, I lost touch with these forums…
I kind of liked solo’ing stuff in GW1. Something that’s hard/ineffective to do in GW2. Kind of allowed me to play whenever, for however long. With GW2 if I want to do a dungeon I have to find a group of people (hopefully competent enough), and then I can’t exactly ditch them half way through (some paths are too long, would feel bad considering how long it took to assemble a group) if I had to go do something else (life calls).
I miss that choice to be able to play with others or just do it yourself: open world is open to all, the whole MMO aspect but dungeons are not. I miss being able to run it myself (with or without a party) as I could in GW. I miss that choice.
Yup, glad someone else also misses that.

WvW is about the same, unless you roam you have to find a zerg and stick to it, though you can ditch at any time. The only game mode that allows me to play solo is sPvP.
Yeah it is an MMO, where I’m “supposed” to play with others… but I shouldn’t really feel that playing with others is overwhelming cumbersome (dungeons). In comparison WoW has/had a good dungeon system, being able to queue for a dungeon, having a team assembled for you, teleporting in to the dungeon, and generally all the dungeons aren’t long and are rewarding (till you get all the gear… at which point you can do them for fun or not). GW2 fall short on not having a queue system, on length of dungeons, and on rewards (especially thanks to DR).
As for end-game grind for cosmetics…
Ha. It’s more like end-game TP flipping for gold, to get gems to get cosmetics off cash shop.
Yesterday I decided to get back to D/D thief for a while (WvW) and just wow… At first everything seemed right.. then i met a warrior who landed a stun on me, I ss away and i got rubberbanded right back. Then I was immobilized and tryed a cnd+steal while immob to get to stealth up and steal just went on cd without doing anything. Then I took an eviscerate to the face for 9k+ (running with 2,6k armor) and that was it.
It really feels like D/D is not getting you anywere. I haven’t played it for months and CnD feels so telegraphed and slow it’s quite sad really. I think that it would be enough to half it’s cast time to make it viable tbh
The class would be in a lot better spot if the bugs were fixed. No amount of buffs can compensate for skills that fail that often.
Steal, kittened up teleports, stealth bugs (tho rare in comparison to the previous 2), weird FS pathing – I though I’d just learn to use skill 3 after the patch only to find that FS either ignores a target or when it visually hits, it doesn’t register the hit to turn into LS (no blocks/invul etc).
At least there’s this:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/Steal-Bug-Making-thief-unplayable/page/3#post4425479
No time line on a fix, but at least there’s recognition that the original fix didn’t fix it.
….so we got that going for is which is nice.
Yup… it’s “nice” of them for fixing a mistake that they made on a skill that used to work better. This is one way to look at it. Don’t mind it that it’s taking them a couple of days… It’s just nice that they’re fixing it after breaking it more.
Maybe the place I used to work at was too strict or maybe I was just being too h.a.r.d. (censored? really?) on my self… If I accidentally ruined a functionality after deploying my code, I would fix it within 5-20 minutes of discovery that I broke it. I guess I was “nice” that way – No, actually I didn’t want to seem like a kitten up – and it was embarrassing as it is to ruin something working, but every passing minute knowing that it was still broken because of me was agonizing.
But yeah, it’s nice of them.
(edited by Zero Day.2594)
The thing is, how will you balance WvWvW?
More points per tick for the objectives held by the least covered side? Seems so odd right…
Elaborate…
That makes me think that if Side A holds 3 camps and Side B holds 6 camps, side A will get more points than B (or close to, say 4-5 points for A and 6 points for B ). Why would anyone want to capture things then? Or in the same scenario (A-3, B-6) are A and B going to get the same amount (assuming the points multiple is let’s say 2 when your side has less, so A would get 6 points and B would also get 6 points)? This idea also doesn’t reward defending, as the side with more coverage, having to defend more doesn’t get a multiplier like the side with the least coverage having to defend less. So, going back to A has 3 camps with 4 points and B has 6 camps with 6 points – each A camp is valued at 4/3 points while each B camp is valued at 1 point. While it’s easier for A to allocate forces to 3 camps and save more points by defending, B has to allocate across 6 camps to save less points than A. Further even if A loses a point in comparison to B it will lose less points (difference between having 3 camps then having 2 camps points) since it still retains a multiplier for having less camps (can’t exactly show with small numbers), while B will lose more (difference between 6 and 5 camps points) – this also effectively means that if A is on the offensive taking 1 of B’s camps, it’s getting rewarded more since it still has less camps than B (so A now has 4 camps with a point multiplier for having the least amount, while B has 5 camps and no multiplier).
In a 1v1v1 perspective, the amount of reward for taking something will be A>B>C – where A has the least amount of camps captured and C has the most. For C defending will suck the most since there’s possibly 2 sides against it and it has to allocate across a greater camp coverage.
Plus the scoring is more high-level stuff, as opposed to what most people think when they think “WvW balance” – which typically means class “balance” in relation to WvW, which possibly leads to changes in zerg/havoc/roaming composition.

Can’t exactly takes this QQ seriously since it’s just a shift from D/D or S/D to P/D some patches/patch ago. Before the Dec 12 patch almost a year ago, there was little to no complain or name calling of this build, the main focus back then was D/D. Now that people don’t play D/D much… the focus shifted to another weapon set, which will then get QQ’ed about.
:P People will always QQ about a viable thief build.
BTW,you don’t need to specifically play this build, the reason people do play it is because they find it the most effective. If you don’t want to be like everyone else, then build something else. If it bothers you that your build is less effective, well I guess proceed to QQ’ing.

we need Anet to decide what exactly it is they want thief to do, then make changes to support that role.
o.o
Don’t they want us to be venom-sharing trappers?
I mean, I always felt those kind of hints coming from them.
I think the first step is actually admitting that the supported game modes are not 1v1 and are not about killing each other.
That’s a little too much for some to swallow…
Some people’s “bigger picture” remains in a 1v1 scenario regardless of what’s going on around them.
dark side we dont know when to give up
on the bright side we love our jobs
With the recent nerfs it’s more like:
@Volrath
Yup, pretty much what I’m doing. Though passively working towards a “legendary”, by flipping kitten on TP…
I tried playing guardian and warrior for a bit… but it was too boring, they really couldn’t hold me for more than 20 minutes of game play.
At this point, i am pretty sure the balance is based on statistics from China (class/build popularity etc.)
…
fixed it for ya!
I can sum it up in two letters, top that… it’s:
QQ
Rather than creating a petition, people could STOP posting on the forum, so that the forum dies or becomes extremely inactive. Maybe also stop playing thieves… (tbh I still use mine for TP flipping, after which I cry then leave the game each time). Buying less gems…
Creating a petition is “cute” at best. Notice the poll in my signature, it got nowhere, though at least I know I’m not alone – dislike ascended (weapons), since time gated, lots of $$$, and doesn’t solve their original problem that they were trying to solve with their implementation which was to create a bridge between exotics and legendaries (wait… could the problem be… precursors?!?! nah, we need a new tier of gear that’s more pain the kitten to get).

The devs are pretty Hard To Catch… Ha see what I did there… :P
So, they got displaced into the enemy forces and killed?
That would explain why they haven’t commented.

I havent seen a QQ post for a few days now tbh. I’m starting to think they’ve run out of ideas… :/
I mean there’s an easy one… daggers now cleave! <- that just begs to be cried about.
you know… i think the skill time-gating thing is a plot twist on us waiting and wanting new weapon skills…
Well if you want to spend time going through the most awesome leveling systems to get the best class in the game (backed by all the QQ’s we receive on daily/weekly basis) that’s ANet’s golden child and receives but only buffs and righteous fixes and improvements, then yeah totally worth it!
This is the interwebz! Now your stupid idea will live on forever!!!!! and never be deleted….

i don’t know, i’ve been voicing my discontent for the past two and a half weeks and no signs of infractions.
whether repeating the problems over and over will help devs listen to us or not, though, that’s another subject.
Two weeks…
A friendly suggestion. Quit while you’re ahead. And by “quit” i mean either re-roll another class or find another game, just forget about the thief and spare your nerves. I’m not trying to be rude, just saying it’s never going to get better – don’t expect any buffs, at most hope to be left alone.two weeks of discontent, because it’s been two weeks since the thief preview.
i’ve been maining thief since BWE1, and having a good amount of playtime in most professions, i don’t see that changing any time soon. i just want them to fix what’s broken, and the thief preview made it sound like they think they’re fixing it, when they’re not.
Ah k.
Yeah, basically it’s a good idea to not get your hopes up for the thief class in general.
Yup…
And when you find a post like:

I really wish I could send a batch of cupcakes loaded with ghost peppers (it’s a real pepper) to those that partake in spewing the balancing changes.
Oh and for a few seconds I was thinking about buying the Quiver and the katana off the BLC…. Ha.
:D Either way, thief will remain OP post patch for shadow stepping between bank and TP in LA.
TEEF OP 4EVA!

Well I think thieves will remain OP because I will still be able to Shadow Step and Shadow Shot between the TP and the bank in LA… Fastest class for that. (And that’s all I use it for, for tp flipping). So luckily these changes wont effect my game play on thief. Good try ANet.
The warrior adrenaline rework is good for thieves actually, since they shouldn’t have many problems in dodging Eviscerate or Earthshaker.
Also, the dagger buff is cool and LS will make a lot more people complain about it.
Really hope that the mesmer’s scepter auto attack doesn’t get through.
Wait a couple of days after release and you will see nubs crying “TEEF OP! DOUBLE KILLZ WITH CLEAVE #nerfnextpatch!” (even though… <insert what everyone else has said>)
mmmm…i heard wildstar is pretty fun
i don’t know if i want to get into WoW
i’ll give ff14 a try, heard a lot of good things about it
WildStar → NCSoft ~= ANet
Wow
O.o
Someone wanting a positive change for the thief class… this is rare.
Honestly it looks and feels like a bug/lazy coding, nvm everything else. I would even accept having the channeling skill “break”/prevent stealth, since that would feel more polished and would make more sense. Right now it really does seem kind of half-as*ed. Besides it looking bad in game, you can also see how it’s half-as*ed based on the split of people preferring your fix vs preferring channeling breaking stealth, like they really made it in between off the start.
Though, I would much rather prefer what you’re suggesting, breaking/stopping the channeling when stealthing.
Yeah as much as I would like this fix myself….
Good luck getting through all the haters!
(edited by Zero Day.2594)
This is a tough example to follow.
Just nerf thieves please.
ma loot bags, they’re running away!
it will happen guys… just you watch…
that said, i’m starting to lose faith in the balance team’s handling of the thief profession. even the buffs they gave us felt incredibly misguided.
Lets be honest tho, what would they possibly buff on sd or dp without making them OP? They were incredibly good sets before the patch, sd acro was almost unbeatable 1v1. After the patch theyll still be very strong.
I’m sure theres a few things that could be reverted, without making things OP…. Like the range on cluster bomb.
So apparently, both necro’s and thief’s daggers will be able to hit/cleave 2 enemies.
I think this makes the thief even more susceptible to “teef OP” threads…
Also, kind of wondering if backstab will also hit on 2 enemies…. (that would be funny)
:D anyways I predict that there will be new QQ’s about how thieves can now hit multiple targets and how that’s OP.
TBH I kind of hope there’s new QQ’s…

Warrior.
Can’t go wrong.
Woah, you made me remember we had traps.
What’s next, using stealth reveals you?
And to balance it, we only get revealed if a opponent is within 1,200 range. It now becomes more challanging to use stealth ,which will result in a huge buff in thiefs brainpower (!)

Why: I spammed shortbow poison aoe, caltrops, etc to apply conditions on foes in area and noticed I can pretty much kill both players and monsters without becoming “revealed.” This is getting more and more popular in WvW and it is rather unfair… But this is enough, please make any damage the thieves do in stealth apply revealed. Spamming conditions from stealth should reveal them.

I really hated playing thief so i parked my thief for my warrior.
Boy oh boy is it a much better class.
I reccomend you guys give it a go, thief is not worth it
I agree. I hated my Thief so much that I rolled another Thief — and hated that too so I rolled a 3rd Thief.
Boy oh boy, it is a much better profession.
I recommend you guys give it a go, the first thief is not worth it — third time’s the charm.
I havn’t quit gotten sick of my 2nd thief. 1 for wvw/pve, another for pvp. 1st is a norn because cultural is BAMF for thief and death blossom is hysterical, 2nd is an asuran because he’s obnoxiously difficult to read in a duel.
My main and 2nd thief are humans, and the 3rd is a Sylvari. I might roll an Asura next.
Wasn’t there a guy with all thieves alts… sandsukal… sanduskel? Think a close relative of Burnfall (o.O what happened to him where’s his poetry).
And yeah warriors are so much more faceroll than thieves.
This is how i play mine….
Attachments:
Warriors/Guards.
Warriors can pretty much do everything, and very decently too. Guards might lack in some areas (roaming?) though make up for their great support in groups….
Personally, I prefer a warrior over a guard, since I am free to play any role while also being pretty deadly.
Thieves only got roaming/trolling (causing QQ threads…) in WvW and small scale fights. :/ Still consider it my “main”, though only really use it to TP stuff (run/“perma”-dodge/shadowstep between TP and bank) and some sPvP (P/D bleed condi… yeah not the most optimal or best for sPvP, but I like it)… And solo-pve, since really who cares? (arguably it might be more of a handicap though…)
Depends all on what you want to do really… You should try thief+warrior at least if you have space for characters.

If we want to take this honestly, real world ninjas didn’t run across rooftops in full black, throwing shurikens and disappearing in smoke. They would dress as common folks, and fought with whatever tools they could get their hands on.
Thank you!
Shurikens/Throwing knives were apparently made from garden tools (small-hand-shovel/scoop -> flattened -> sharpened -> throwing knives)… just somewhere I read, not sure how accurate it is.
Ninja’s/Assassins/Rogues/Thieves are kind of over-hyped/exaggerated.
Assassins -> kill kitten, however possible, do w/e it takes to take out their target. A killing machine. Though roots of it (Hashishin), suggest theres more. Weapon wise, pretty sure anything goes with assassins.
Ninja’s -> tend to be a bit more on survivalist (and naturalistic/using environment) side of things though overlapping a with assassins, normal people/samurais gone ronin/rogue – but really anyone. Weapon wise, typically associated (media!) with things like shurikens/throwing knives, katanas (from samurais), various powders, rod weapons (staffs, among other things – possibly from martial artists), kamas…. though pretty sure they’re also pretty lenient with what they use.
Rogues -> Typically a person that strays from a “code”/order/law… For instance in the case of a samurai when they lose their master (be it death or disowned) their code dictates that they commit suicide. Should the samurai choose not to, he becomes a ronin/rogue. Going against his master would also qualify him as a rogue… In a way… ninjas, thieves, assassins are rogues….
Thieves -> they steal kitten. o.o Go figure. Weapon wise, something small/concealable (knives, your good old hands? … )… though anything will do? (just like others above)
If you dig more into assassins and ninjas, at least I came to realization, there’s no real clear-cut definition/rule-set for them. Plus a thief can be an assassin, a ninja can be a thief and so forth…
In a nutshell, the archetype that’s created between all of them is someone that’s lawless (be it code, order or the actual law), deceptive (to a degree), but set on getting kitten done (assassin-> kill, ninjas-> survive/kill, rogues -> persist/go against a code/order, thieves -> eyes on the prize).
Quick and dirty definitions/understandings.
Having said all that and back to the OP…
Rifles first! Staffs later.
If you really need a justification as to why rifles…
Assassin → assassinating people from high-rise building windows (like the movies!) with high-powered sniper rifles….
In-game, it would give us a (I hope) a 1200 range weapon. This point alone should trump staffs (which might fall into the melee category, depends on how developers tilt their heads… martial artist ninjas or spell casting ninjas).

What: Power of Inertia
Why:Honestly, X/X/X/30/30 S/D thieves have so many “natural” evades (evades that burn endurance) through Feline Grace, Vigorous Recovery and Bountiful Theft that the fact that you’re able to get might for 15 seconds at base per dodge is absolutely absurd. When you’re getting stacks of might for nearly half a minute from a single dodge, then that’s stepping way out of bounds. 10 stacks of might computes to more than a 16% damage boost in direct damage alone which lasts a period of almost half a minute and doesn’t require a lot of conditions to fulfill outside of dodging frequently, which you should be doing anyways (and this damage buff is to a build that’s pretty good already). Combined with Fluid Strikes, this is an extremely large buff to your overall damage, especially just for being an adept trait, and as a result this single Adept trait contributes to a very easy-to-play thief play style which is becoming increasingly frequent in today’s meta.

All the time.
I said without.
I think the better question is:
A Warrior without a Longbow?
There is no such thing as a friendly environment when you have players who feel they are entitled to a free kill.
This and every other thief related thread in this subforum needs to get dumped into the thief forums where they belong. All they are for is to get sympathy from equally bad players so they all can make loud noises.
a thief main supporting his class, who would have guessed.
…
That’s cool, so I’m guessing the opinions of those that play thieves class are valued less, than those that don’t? Or is it that opinions of those that don’t align with yours are worth less?
Hey I can call you out too, as stereotypical poster that says “x main supporting their class”, trying to undermine what they’ve posted. “Millions” of your “type” out there.
…
compassion aside, here are some tips that ive found to be helpful when fighting an unbalanced class:
- roll a PU mesmer and pwn everything
- make a thread on the forums asking why there is no counter to a spammable class mechanic
- l2p the overpowered class and do some facerolling of your ownhope this helps!
Look at that, spectacular! Someone found some sort of counters (anything is better than nothing at this point)… There may be hope for the forums yet… Though two things:
1. “make a thread on the forums…”,
If you’re going to do that please do it here (also linked in signature), I have made that post specifically for those kinds of occasions, since they seem to happen very often so we might as well help keep the forums a “clean” and tidy place.
2. “l2p the overpowered class and do some facerolling of your own”
Possibly the best suggestion out of the three! Seriously, people that complain about said class should roll one for their own, just to see what’s up and how it’s done and what not… maybe you can learn something useful out of the experience.
Domey, aste, and Zacchary posts pretty much sum it up though.
Their posts are not far from the truth, since lots of advice (at first polite) on numerous occasion was given and were rejected in a blink of an eye (and over time the advice became more mocking). Both sides (class supporting side, and anti-class side) are kind of tired of each other, can’t be blamed really since neither of the sides are getting anywhere – nor will they, since devs will just do w/e they see fit.
Everything beyond those posts will be basically either starting the very old flames or feeding the very old flames.
