….
just tell me that this comparison is not extremely weird:
a class in wow has 3 specs that are viable in every game mode(except for tanks in pvp and healers in solo obvioualy)…for example if im playing a shaman im wow i can heal im every game mode, play ranged in every game mode AND play melee on every game mode.
…
The builds that you see commonly used are just what are optimal. There are other builds that are viable.
Essentially this.
Optimal and Viable are two different words.
Viable suggests that the build(s) can overcome a task.
Optimal suggests that the build is the best build at overcoming a task.
A viable build can be more optimal than another viable build, suggesting that that build is better at overcoming a task.
Heading over to WoW and Noxxic’s DPS (PvE) rankings (http://www.noxxic.com/wow/dps-rankings/targets-1-ilvl-895-fight-real/), we can have a look at the Mage…
By the rankings it has 3 viable builds (possibly more that are not shown), Frost, Arcane, and Fire. Frost places 4th place, Arcane places 5th place, and Fire places 21st place. Now, all builds are viable, though Frost and Arcane are more optimal than fire in both single and multi-target fights. Then Frost is more optimal than Arcane and Fire, in both single and multi-target fights. Out of all the builds, Frost is the most optimal. Now, having played WoW myself, probably 99% of people raiding will run the Frost build, the 1% that don’t will have a harder time getting into raids or core-raid groups…
Similarly for other classes and PvP.
It’s also worth pointing out that the 7k extra DPS done by the Frost mage can be lost due to inadequate mechanical/player skill – say improper rotation. Though, if a Fire Mage is beating a Frost Mage on the dps charts… the frost mage is really doing something wrong, or isn’t geared…
Every game, has tons of viable builds.
And every game has only a handful of the most optimal builds.
Have yet to see a game with a ton of optimal builds per class/prof/spec. I think it’s because we’re using the word “optimal”.
Edit:
The most optimal builds are also called “meta” builds…

The one time I pop in on the thief forums….
Congrats, you’ve been added to the Nerf Wish List!
Originally by: LionChain.7694
What: nerf d/p and evades
Why:
Please nerf thief evades/endurance regen. The amount of dodging they have (between their actual dodges, endurance regen and weapon skill dodges) is just absolutely ridiculous.
Please nerf d/p weapon set by removing the spammable daze from the offhand pistol and reducing the smoke field on the offhand pistol to like 1 sec. The constant headshotting and stealth spamming is too powerful. The dazes from DH traps and from scrapper gyros were removed for a reason…it’s time to remove them from thief’s d/p as well.

You’re posting on a GuildWars 2 forums…. (mind you, the official forums)
The general answer will be yes.
The amount of content you ask for, OP, sounds like it’s from 10-12 years ago.
Today, that amount of content can be stretched out through 6-7 buzzworded-DLC at around 20-35 bucks each. AND, people will buy it, love it, defend it, and think that this is the way to go.
You both clearly missed the obvious troll or have not been around the boards for a while. I mean this is Zero Day of all people.
I mean look at his signature lol…
Shhhh. I don’t think they noticed.
There isn’t.
It’s the easiest class in game, with perma stealth, perma dodge, and 1-shot backstabs/skills.
I want another dodge-oriented trait line with nerfs to the Dare Devil to help prevent dodges from being overpowered. If we ask for it, we won’t get it, right?
I think I want another elite spec that guts out our normal spec.
Felt good man,
Felt good
Brilliant idea!
Remove all stealth from the thief as part of a balance patch – lots of people will be happy.
Add stealth back in with an elite spec called “Stalker”.
BOOM, people will buy the expac!
With such an original concept, the expac will sell by the buckets.

LONGBOW or riot! we really need a 1200 weapon and rifle meh…
i would love to see sword OH too , dual swords on thief <3
Who said Greatswords can’t be 1200 ranged weapons?
Just look at Revenant with it’s 1200 range hammer…
1200 RANGE GREATSWORDS or riot!
(Powerful slicing attack that create powerful cutting winds that have a range of 1200 units)
(edited by Zero Day.2594)
I did do that if you watched my video!
:P From a video’s perspective, you’re always in the center – so it doesn’t give the same effect… You did look very close to them, i think you were going for the male P/P one right?
The teaser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_eKikhwYM8
The build: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f90T-V-FiAk
watch both!
I actually remember using that build way back when, and it was good. The summoned thieves add a bit more damage, but their main role is to add distractions/chaos/panic/confusion/surprise (who the kitten uses summoned thiefs!?!? who is this guy – dead). Bonus if you can mimic the summoned thief’s looks on your actual character.
omg necro in Thief forum
:P This thread will never die.
I am officially giving up this game, going back to Blizzard or Riot games. Bye.
Um…
Balance is kitten everywhere. And I doubt any game will be made perfectly balanced.
Riot and Blizzard both have F2P MOBAs (HotS and LoL)… Now when a new champ comes out, 90% of the time they’re broken AF. Why? Because they’re trying to get you to buy said champ, so you can own for however long before they nerf’em and release a new one.
If you say WoW… Now, I have heard rumors that they’re taking the gear out of the equation because back when I used to play it was gear > class > skill. Now it’s probably having similar issues as GW, and that’s IF they took gear out of the equation.
Overwatch? I play that as well. Anything not meta, you will get kitten on by your own team. They will tilt to the point where it’s a guaranteed a match lose (try playing bastion for a good number of games). Another fine example is Symmtra, which is getting reworked – but from everything I’ve seen, will still be bottom tier.
But one very advantageous thing for ones own ego in all those games are your own teammates – Which you can use as scapegoats for when you loose. Blaming everything on them and avoiding thinking it might be you. This will allow you to last in those games longer, before again realizing, there’s imbalances and potentially lack of your own skill.
And this might be on the extreme of things, but the only true way of creating a balanced game, where each hero/character is balanced with respect to all the others, is to give each character the same moves and reskin/redo the animations for them per character/hero – but then that will be very bland, don’t you think? But this will be perfectly balanced, since each hero will be doing the same X damage per second as every other. You will only be able to create so many moves before you start creating “OP” sequences of said moves, unintentionally.
:D Cheer up, and embrace the imbalance of things. Roll whatever you consider OP, so you could tip the imbalance in your favor.
Rifles or riot.
Greatswords or GTFO.
Maybe partially it’s due to their bad design…
But it’s also partially due to dedicated tears and high levels of potassium over span of years. Refer to:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/thief/Nerf-Wish-List-1/page/2#post6415290
For evidence.
Bump for the gigglez.
Yeah… Running into the same problem myself, especially with tangled depths. Trying to get an achievement there (killing one of the meta bosses, towards the whispers backpack).
Basically, aside from AB, all the maps only have 1 instance of them where people do the meta. Meaning if you’re not exactly at the start of the meta (or a couple minutes before) and you don’t get into the instance that’s doing the meta… Well you’re kitten out of luck.
Seems like the longevity of these maps were never taking into consideration when they were designed. Especially when some of the achievements are tied to metas directly or indirectly have now become somewhat of feats strength to do.
This is coming from someone that stopped playing for a while and trying to get back in… Complete turn-off. They didn’t have these issues when HoT was first released, but now that it’s been a while… And the novelty wore off… It’s just horrible design.
Also, might help, a link to event timers:
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Event_timers
Trying to get back into the game and enjoy it… But everything related to HoT, it seems, should be avoided like the plague, since it’s more of a headache than an enjoyable play time.

Some people like particle effects, some people like animations. It’s a build like any other, would you rather play lazer tag all day?
Like real-life legitimate Laser tag? Hell yea I would. It’s too cost-prohibitive to do that, though.
Yeah the cost of alcohol beverages really add up….
Wouldn’t know; I don’t drink.
The Laser tag place nearby charges like $20 a match, though.
Yeah that’s pricey on it’s own.

<Picture>you stole my screenshot!!!
I’m guessing nothing has changed in my X (3? 5? longer?) months of hiatus – in terms of where the thief stands, and WvW (in general).
….
<Picture>you stole my screenshot!!!
Might have… I had this laying around for a long time.
The earliest would be with the release of the next raid wing.
Cool. Yeah makes sense, I remember them saying something like you will need to do all 3 wings to make the armor.
Guessing that’s in the summer-ish update?
Haven’t played since… 2 months after HoT. I’ve been loosely following the game, but I didn’t see anything about legendary armor…
So, is it in game and can people craft it yet?
Can’t seem to find much on the wiki and in the wardrobe…
…
I don’t play the game, I play the players.
But the players you play are in the game, so to play them you need to play the game.
Unless, you mean, playing someone that’s playing on your account that’s playing players under your name – Then you’re play players, dawg.
This is somewhat funny.
Legendaries were promised – but stopped.
New WvW was promised – released but now reverted (due to feed back).
The warm promises.
You know… “False” advertisement for legendary weapons was the the first time they did “false” advertisement. cough cough manifesto.
But yeah, let’s write this one off again as “nothing is set in stone”!
:D
It amuses me every time someone complains about the manifesto after all these years.
Same will be said about the legendaries, give it time.
You know what will be very annoying at this point?
If the continue to systematically release armor/skins in the gem store… Because a dev has said that it requires a lot of resources to make (armor – and I’m guessing, by extension gem store armor skins, since they are essentially armor).
If by gemstore armor skins you mean outfits, they said the outfits are about 10 times easier to make than armor.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Dev-quotes-from-Reddit/page/3#post6023796
I’m kind of curious as to how. They’re just lacking stats, and aren’t in pieces. Still have to adjust per race, per animation, and so on.

Stop playing and stop buying gem store kitten?
Much easier solution.
There are tons of games, across different genres, to play.
Thanks.
Thought so. Tried to Google/Wiki it, not much found… :/
A bit of the bad timing…
I’ve been out of the loop since about 1-2 months after the expansion came out, and I’m curious…
Is it possible to craft Legendary Armor?
What if they removed infiltrators arrow?
It’s better than nothing.
If it is true that this list is purely manual, it will then show exactly what they’re working on.
I’m hoping that it becomes more automated… Like they have their own issue tracking system in the back-end but some of the issue they mark as public for us to view or copy-paste into this “list”/separate “issue tracker”.
It’s just with the announcement of this tracker, it would be a good time, as a community to show once again that we care about the game – and that releasing such information, as issue tracking, was a good idea.
You know, positive reinforcement…
Ladies and gents, in case those that are not on reddit for whatever (unimaginable) reason, they’ve announced their new “Known Issue Tracker”:
Reddit post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/48v1x4/announcing_the_known_issue_tracker/
The tracker itself:
http://help.guildwars2.com/entries/98802888
Bug reporting guide lines:
http://help.guildwars2.com/entries/98788978
Most notably, it says “please submit an in-game bug report so we can get to work on fixing it!”. Now some of you might or might not have been doing so before… But with their announcement, why not put the system to the test.
Now, without defending the dev’s too much… I would like to say that you shouldn’t expect the bugs to be fixed the moment or the day after you submit them. Who knows what they have on their plate/table in terms of work. Reproduce-ability of the bug as well as trace-ability (on a debugging level) can also be a kitten that delays the fix. So please be patient. Their guide lines are worth reading on how to submit good bug reports.
Personally, as a dev (not a game one though), I love it when users find bugs and tell me about them. As much testing as is done, and as much as I (and I hope I speak for all devs in general) aim for perfection, it is impossible to achieve it – yet we stride for it. When a user finds a bug and submits it, it shows, at least to me, that they do use whatever I’ve made, and care enough for it to want to work perfectly (as do I). And when the bug is fixed, I know that I’ve made the user at least a bit happy. But, that’s just me.
So yeah. Go out there and report bugs.

I know that there are various bugs with the thief specifically, as well as other things in game, that some would love to get resolved, so take the time to write a bug report in game for the bugs you find (for the thief class and just for the game in general).

Let them first sort things out on land and then maybe move onto aquatic based combat.
…
I retract my statement and instead offer you my tears.
:P if it’s not vault spamming …
It’s stealth spamming, and if it’s not stealth spamming…
It’s evade spamming, and if it’s not evade spamming…
It’s heartseeker spamming, and if it’s not heartseeker spamming…
You get the drift. Don’t take offence to it, just do w/e you wanna do.
Scrolled through the post…
Didn’t see one troll saying:
“What? You’ve been in the meta for 3 years, now you’re crying that you’re out of meta”.
So I thought I would just drop that line, since this kind of thread isn’t a thread if someone doesn’t mention that.
:| Can’t believe you guys are still around….
See it’s not grindy because people will tell you that it isn’t and that you don’t need all that stuff you want anyways.
:D
Hope that makes you feel better.
That’s so funny that actually actually got picked up…
All I have to say to those complaining about names and terms ….
Welcome to the Internet!
:P To a degree it’s fun seeing new terms pop up and people just run with it, just because it shows a bit of the current culture – even if it’s as moronic as “cancer” or “cancerous”.
Isn’t everything “viable” in pve?
Plus, it’s written black on white, in the first patch it was a 10% increase, and in this patch it’s was a 10% increase….
Now, it either does ~20% more since the first patch…
OR
What they’re saying is very inaccurate…
Yeah…
They REALLY need to move it over to a bug fix.
Otherwise it looks like they’re trying to get credit for something that has already “been done” but butched up.
I get that they like to play with their words all the time… but this is silly. Save some grace, and say it was a bug fix.
Sorry to rain on everyone’s parade, but yeah, let’s be real.
(edited by Zero Day.2594)
I love it how they include the 10% withdrawal as part of the changes… Man I could have sworn I’ve seen that change before…
Yeah…
Sustained damage needs some survival sustainability. You can’t “sustain” damage when you’re dead…
It’d be nice if they added in some sort of passive life/life-steal on hit, like SoM, so you could potentially sustain yourself doing damage… Though as far as I’m aware SoM is flat life on hit independent of the attack damage, and there’s another IP that gives a % back on crit – but you need to crit and IP replaces HK or NQ… Wonder if there’s Power/Crit-Chance/Healing power stat set, can’t remember off the top of my head.
Though that’s for PvE. Doubt it wouldn’t work remotely in WvW, and I doubt it would be useful in sPvP.
And yeah, Jana I got the mail…
Just been busy lately, and playing GW2 is like the last thing on my list of things I want to do in spare time.
