Daredevil?

It has surviviability issues. Core issues with the thief still remain. What it can do, generally others can do it and more. Niche is it’s mobility (in all modes), and maybe selfish damage in PvE…

Worth playing? Yes and no. Yes, because if it’s “fun”, go ahead and play it… who am I to stop ya? (I know plenty of people that kitten and moan that the thief sucks, yet continue to play it because they find it fun/most fitting for them) Yes, if you want to “train” yourself with extra weight on, to then switch classes and feel weightless… (if that makes sense). No, competitively in sPvP it doesn’t seem to be in a good place. No, because history shows that it won’t get any better.

An aside to those that say something along the lines of “Daredevil has more evasiveness than a normal thief”, I wish to point out that they’ve nerfed Acro trait line prior to release of the HoT. Prior to the release of the thief was just as evasive as DrD (maybe a touch less, since the staff… but trait wise…). Essentially, Acro was gutted/nerfed as a setup for the DrD spec.

That would be extremely OP when you can go /p and just spam head shots.

Considering you must trait for it, spend plenty of initiative per Headshot, and hope your enemy has no stability and/or further trait for some reliability against stability spam by investing in Bountiful Theft over Trickster in a build without Escapist’s Absolution (rendering you extremely vulnerable to conditions) I’d say it really isn’t that overpowered of a concept at all.

Bountiful theft removes stab 21st so it’s always an interrupt.

Having that much damage on a,interrupt spamming class is,broken

Lol what class isn’t broken in this gahd awful system they have. I mean seriously, u don’t think DH traps are cheesy as hell?!

Just because something is broken that doesn’t mean you have to go and add to the pile to make things “fair”

If everything is broken, then everything is more or less balanced.

… I suggest those of you who feel strongly that Friday is the better night keep queuing up WvW maps during those hours hard so ANET has some good metrics to compare to the new reset time.

Considering, ANet goes off of metrics… This guy got it right.

Skew the metrics in your favor. Make Friday night YOUR reset night. So that next time around they look at metrics, they will see most people play Friday nights (for some reason – I doubt they will investigate in depth… since metrics and numbers is what drives them).

(It’s like their pushing it to be a bit more guild-centric rather than world-centric…)
(Though, in GW1, in AB’s I would get kittened off at the people AB’ing on one side and would switch sides just to kill’em, then switch again once the other side kittened me off…)

That is if WvW is still a thing and people do it post alliance/megaserver patch.

Also kind of interesting to look at the difference of how much gold is taken out of the economy…

Say you were to buy The Legend for 1019g … roughly 866g will go to the buy and 153g will vanish into thin air due to tax. So, buying it off the TP takes 153g out of the economy if you buy The Legend.

On the flip side, if you craft it completely through, supposedly it costs 1413g to craft. No percentage (as far as i’m aware) of the 1413g goes to any other player, meaning 1413g vanishes into thin air. That’s about 9 times more gold taken out of the economy than buying one off the TP…

I wouldn’t call it an RPG at all because the mechanics are radically different from Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy games.

In his second point he brings up something that’s probably being overlooked, and that is: “E-sports is a byproduct of successful competitive game”

Having a game become an eSport isn’t really something that could be forced… Which is what they’re trying to do currently with sPvP and leagues, and w/e it is they’re doing to push GW2 into being an eSport.

This “byproduct” has already happened once in GW2 actually. GvG’ing. Players made it, because they wanted it to be a thing. ANet came out and made it possible to GvG in guildhalls. The thing is, even if ANet hadn’t done that, I wouldn’t doubt that the GvG’ing community would continue on with it’s thing in WvW. It’s player made. Hell, even DoTA (think back to WC days) was player made (two (?) guys popped open a map editor…).

In a funny way, I could see GvG’ing become an eSport faster than sPvP/Leagues… That is if that community keeps going at it.

That’s at least the high-level issue of GW2 becoming an eSport. There are lower-level issues like ease of spectating, balancing, and promotion (which, would be spread by the players themselves if they want it…).

I think it’s people thinking that the loot you get doing DS meta is better than the other metas.

And when there isn’t a (taxi’ed) meta going on, they’re just plain old maps.

Dragon’s Stand meta is also the most straightforward of the HoT maps. You just need to push three lanes in more or less a straight line, while other maps are harder to navigate or require too much hopping around to maximize your participation %.

Yeah, effort vs reward.

God, I must be playing this game wrong – 30k crits per second… how the kitten do get that? Vault?

Btw, is it really 30k per second…? Or do you just mean 30k on some attacks…

Both Weakening Charge and Vault can hit in the 30-35k range with a full suite of buffs (full might and vulnerability, banners, empower allies + assassin’s presence, grace of the land), and even a bit harder if you can get a frost spirit working. Each has a cast time right around a second. Buff stacking makes a big, big difference.

Like you know, if you crit once for 30k over the span of 30 seconds while doing 3-4k other times, you can’t really call that 30k per second…. however if you do 900k (total) damage in over the span of 30 seconds, then yes that’s 30k per second…

Well, again, it depends largely on what kinds of external buffs you are getting. With permanent quickness, good use of Fist Flurry, and the above buffs a thief can crank out roughly 24k DPS on paper, which isn’t slouching by any measure and is more than enough to succeed at raid fights.

So, it’s nice that both charge and vault can hit for 30-35k, each having ~1s cast time, meaning doing both in sequence, would yeah, yield 30-35k dps. But that’s in a time frame of 2 seconds, using 2 skills… Fights last a lot longer, and what are you going to be hitting for when you’re not vaulting or charging? Gotta be some more 30-35k to upkeep that 30-35k dps (remember 30-35k each second, to have a 30-35k dps)…

On paper. That’s good for you to get a start on what to test…

Nope, didn’t read your post, just the OP’s.

Even so, you didn’t even read it with attention.

If we get OP numbers, and consider the might stacks on both tests, daredevil has always 0 might stacks, while herald gets 10-17 might stacks. Let’s put ourselves in the best case scenario for the herald, and say that during the test he caps at 10 stacks.

With a simple proportion, considering 25 might stacks for both from 0 (thief) and 10 (rev):

Thief – 10.6k DPS
Rev – 9.16k DPS

So +1440 DPS for the daredevil spec just giving to both classes 25 might stacks. That means that the daredevil inflicts +15.72% more dmg per second.

Is even only this not enough?

And if we consider a not-so-perfect rotation by a thief, we get at least 9k DPS, which means +27.1% dps, with a very good rotation (i.e.: quite some experience) that unleashes 9.5k dps, it’s +34.15% dps.

Are you still so sure that’s better to bring another herald instead of a staff daredevil?

I would still be interested in seeing both rotations for herald and staff daredevil and their complexities…

As far as I’m aware the herald one is just AA’ing with impossible odds and shiro’s heal (for added dps) then switching to herald to stack might+ unrelenting assault. It might also not be worth it to switch at all, though not sure. Like, it’s hard to screw up, since most of the time your character already AA’s, you just have to pop a couple of skills and not worry about (besides unrelenting assault) popping any other damage skills…


Of course in a guild environment, where one can train themselves with the thief to pull max or as much of the max dps as possible – then yeah, bring a thief. On the flip side, picking up a random thief for a pug, might not be the best idea…

(Read the “guild environment” as a group that aligns the stars for you).


Watched Auesis video…

Rotation doesn’t seem so bad. Number wise, by eye, there were some 3-4k poping up with some +15k as well, but at least visually I saw more 7-12k numbers poping up more often – But that’s visually… Would be more interesting to see a dps meter.

Likewise, would be interesting to see a rev and/or a couple other profs rotations and dps meters.


Also, hate to sound stubborn… but really the first thing that would be nice in any discussion about dps, is a “standard” dps meter… After that would probably solo dps against say target dummies, then in various group settings… And past that would be on actual bosses, consistently/systematically. It’s a bit much…

- It’s a stationary target, without any mechanics that hinder dps. (though, both revs and thieves (well any melee) would suffer from this)

I have seen the thief doing 80 k damage seems like a very good way to contribute to a raid do not understand if there are 9 people providing useful and damage not exceeding the thief and the thief made ??every 48 seconds, a 80 k dps then there I do understand.

So, the way I read that is every 48 seconds it dealt 80k, so the dps (damage per second) over the span of 48 seconds is 1,666/sec.

If you mean, while doing damage over 48 seconds you somehow crit for 80k, then the dps over the span of 48 seconds is (80000+x)/48, where x is the other damage dealt besides the 80k crit.

If you’re trying to say that the thief deals 80k dps over the span of 48 seconds, that would be that in total the thief would need to do (80k/sec * 48sec) 3,840,000 damage. To verify, you take 3,8400,000 damage and divide by 48 seconds, giving you 80,000 damage per second… So each second the thief would need to do 80k damage…. or well 4k damage in 1 attack and then 156k damage on another attack over the span of 2 seconds to give it 80k dps….

Now, I’m not saying it’s impossible, because if you have enough critters around, you can definitely boost your dps to 80k or even more.

The 11.5k Health is really a non-issue for raids if you run Invigorating Precision. 11.5k Health gets healed up really nicely when you’re criting for over 30k per second with some attacks. Plenty of times I’m the last one alive on VG wipes.

Or do you mean 30k crit in one second and you consider it as 30k per second? That’s just a burst/damage of 1 skill, not your actual dps in the span of the whole fight. We really need dps meters (there is one actually, need to give it a try), since there’s also the issue of dealing with boss mechanics along with dodging and positioning….

Measuring – using the dps meter – on golems in the sPvP lobby also doesn’t give exact numbers, since the stats are a bit different and they’re stationary, likewise going out in PvE and measuring on champs that don’t have many/any mechanics…. I remember in wow, on target dummies melee classes would out-dps ranged/casters in some cases (on some patches… blah blah blah), and that was to account for the dps lose in the actual fight for when they had to deal with mechanics. Like for instance, look at noxxic dps rankings there’s one for “maximum” and then there’s one for “realistic” – and even then, I doubt that it accounts for all the fights and their mechanics…

Till dps meters are out… All the talk about dps is relative to the player feels or their own impressions…
As far as I know there’s like 2-3 people that actually take the time to record their runs and then go through the combat log and adding things up…

Personally, I’ve played both rev and necros in the raid, and they feel like they do a lot more damage than a thief – and I really don’t doubt that engie does. BUT, till we get a dps meter, we won’t know for sure. Also, you have to think about the effort your putting in to pull of your max dps… Like with a thief you will probably be busting your balls to actually do considerable dps – while on a rev/necro you could be relaxing, sipping a drink, watching a youtube video, and still doing considerable dps.

The problem isn’t trying to fulfill a role, be it condi/phys dps or now a tank.

The problem is, why would I bring a thief over another class that can fulfill that role plus more.

For instance, I could just bring a necro running:

Which should produce either the same or more damage (let’s just talk damage and ignore other things), and I say more due to the stat choice for gear. Hell, swap out blood magic like suggested, and get the “Death Perception”http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Death_Perception trait so I can have a free +50% crit chance in shroud – making me a tank that DOES damage…

Oh and I won’t haven to worry too much about timing dodges to avoid damage, I will just eat it all at leisure…

So, why would I bring a thief over a necro as a tank. And that just comparing it to one prof… There’s a couple other profs out there that can tank…

Like wise, condi DPS → why not bring an engie,
Phys DPS → why not bring a rev… or a necro…

Sure, you can beat a raid with a thief, but why not bring a different class that will make your life easier?

How many seasons will anet need to get convinced that thieves and wars need help~

Thief in every team for about 3 years and not a word from you. Now all of a sudden this is a travesty :P
