(15 level 80s to gear, and more alts still leveling…)
well that’s a kick to the nuts….. hard enough for me to feel
@Jski
i still think we’re misunderstanding each other.
I dont want to be the best because i have ascended gear. I want it to be easily accessible (no time gating) so that everyone can have “best in slot” so that everyone has the same amount of stats and no one is at a disadvantage (oh and thus, no one is the best nor worst when it comes to gear)
it’s true everyone will get it in time…. but time gating is unnecessary(give me a reason why it is) plus it makes it harder on people coming back to the game…. oh dont forget about switching builds….
and by adding a small bump for a few ppl in these 30 man zerg is NOT going to determine who wins and who losses.
why are they adding that bump?
@emikochan
Some people have legitimate, out of the game reasons, for not being able to log in to even click a button. Some people are casuals, some people are returning. For those people it wont take 2 weeks, it will take month(s) (btw dont forget it’s per-piece…. and wait till armor comes out… oh and btw i hope you like your current build, two weeks to change!). Some people are hardcore enough to log in and press a button (lol…).
But can you tell me a good reason for time gating?
(i might get banned for this)
hey guys that wanna chase a carrot on a stick, i found a sick game for you!
http://us.battle.net/wow/en/
:| only costs you a one time payment, a subscription, and some of your life as well as soul. But i can tell you this, the carrots are always juicy.
(been there, done that, gw1>wow)
It’s only 2 weeks , that’s not a huge time gate. That’s one LS release.
two weeks, is kinda of a long time… for a game….
btw have fun switching builds that require different stats!
But that not the idea behind GW2 your trying to play GW2 like you would play WoW or the other treadmill mmorpgs.
i dont think you understand my post, i would rather not have any treadmill… i would rather have it stay on exotics.
if they NEED to implement ascended, at least include it without the time gating.
yeah and those people coming back after a few weeks or a months, will be at a disadvantage…
um hardcore players will be inline with casuals….
but the tp flippers and the dual credit card wielders…. will still come out ahead, because the (time gated) mats can be sold on TP (so i heard)….
so tell me another reason.
Try read again what i wrote. Also, you are ovbiously talking about WvW: since when has it been balanced around duels?
I’d like anyway to see this math, for informative purposes.
Oh sorry i said something against you. Both in dungeon and WvW it will make a difference (especially when comes full asc armor), just a 10% increase in damage.
I think the thread was called Ascended Gear to Kill Builds and Alts… either way read around why people are complaining… and if anyone is really supporting their idea.
and let me restate: the time gating is just unnecessary.
what’s the point of time gating?
duels in wvw, 1v1 i agree, rarely happens… but when you run away with a sliver of health… now that sliver will drained by someone running higher gear then you.
Why should you have it handed to you immediately?
No, the question is:
Why should things be time gated?
(edited by Zero Day.2594)
Why should I settle for anything less than BiS?
Exactly!
10% is a big difference in WvW.
10% is like a piece of gear. Do you run around with one piece of broken armor?
:D yup!
10% extra damage that you would do (other posts, threads, there was some math) in ascended armor….
if you ever ran away happy with a sliver of health out of battle… well now you might not be so lucky
10% may not be a big deal to you…. but to anyone that wants to do their best (call them try hards, hardcore, nerds) it does.
the time gating, is just unnecessary bullkitten, i would like to hear reasoning for it.
no clue about time gating, i actually would like to hear a legitimate reason for it
none of that money making conspiracy theories….
Be thankful Anet chose to do it this way! Be happy they didnt do a geartreadmill!!
they found a balance…
could they have done it without the time gating bullkitten? easier acquisition?
balance? lol, those that dont log in every day to get their time gated kitten will fall behind…. yeah everyone is going to be on the same playing field when someone is running around in exotics because they didnt log in for a month and someone thats in ascended. Balanced!
geartreadmill – um yeah they did…? first introduced ascended trinks/accs (let the people chase that a bit), now, later, they release weapons…. hmmm o yeah and later armor too …. hmmmm no it’s not an entirely new tier, it’s bits of the tier that’s being chased.
Be thankful – yeah i like gw2, some things i hate about it, this patch or at least the ascended i wish they dont release (and re-think, better it).
@anzenketh
Great! (sarcasm)…. so i want five items (2 daggers, 1 pistol, sb, sword), ~10 weeks… or i could buy (shortcut) mats via TP for i would guess as high as 10-20g? perhaps i should load up on some gems… (kitten no)
crafting had its place for crafting for yourself out of mats you found, if you choose to.
@Xsorus
cool. i’m still 10-20% stronger than you wearing my fancy ascended gear.
fun is another topic….
This topic is on whether ascended gear will kill builds and alts….I have fun playing different builds and alts. Not sure how fun doesn’t relate to the topic, unless there is another reason besides fun to play a game?
Ascended gear isn’t going to literally kill my alts, but it may as well, because it’s a bit hard to have fun staring a years long grind just to get BACK to BiS gear in the face.
YMMV of course. I’m sure it’s a good change for some people. Just not for me or those like me.
People were getting off topic… look at that you were on topic and mentioned fun, cookie for you!
@Zindrix
or someone that doesnt have a weird leather trench coat fetish or male armors with small skirts…. (medium armor complaint)
fun is another topic….
This topic is on whether ascended gear will kill builds and alts….
aggro bubble…..
i use dual dagger with my thief so im going to need 2, then short bow for my alt weapon. So 3 total. Boy…i cant wait…..
i hear ya….
:/ and i want a pistol and a sword as well… 5 for me… so 5 years/months, am i right? let’s hope i dont decide to change the stats on the build…..
Wish they did a poll for this….
If anything it will harm the gem store.
People that stopped playing before this update, will look back and say “oh, great, if i come back i’ll be behind, i will just not come back” instead of “oh, sick update, gear is easier to get! maybe now i can play around with builds more freely in pve/wvw” (or something of the likes). People not coming back, less potential gem buyers.
People that hate the idea might quit (and i’m sure that’s a small amount). Less people playing, less buying gems.Similarly, those that hate the idea but won’t quit, might boycott buying gems.
too lazy to re-type….
K so two ways they can make money off this release and time gating:
Making people play more, thus more chances of them buying something.
Impatience leading to buying gems to convert to gold to buy said items.
So that’s two things for making money out of the patch. There’s three things that will harm the gem store with the release.
being able to do solo runs (with or without henchies)
It should or at least give us a perfect salvage kit that removes run/sigil without destroying the item. Why im even asking for this? Should’ve been in the game since day one, wake up anet
o.O wow i could have sworn Perfect Salvage Kit was in some other game….
Yeah Lucem, builds (should) differ in stat allocation, not the sum of stats. Meaning, everyone should have the same sum/pool of stats, but how they choose to allocate them can/should differ.
Ascended gear, makes the sum/pool of stats differ (and allocation differs like always)… which means some people will have 110 points (say) versus some people that have 100 points.
It’s not bad when it’s easily acquired and everyone is once again with the same sum/pool of stats… but when it’s prolonged for no apparent reason….
… where the kitten did the post go… (deleted?)
o.O we can swim?
I like the idea, but it should be a separate goal. Legendary Sigil.
Lets not give them any ideas…. before the precursors RNG is gone.
I think they’re working some “keep ’em grinding and buying gems” profit strategy. It’s certainly not about fun.
Even then, how is time gating going to help them make people buy gems? Unless they implement a direct (and blunt) shortcut to time gating, at that point they should feel sleezy inside and should shower every hour.
Sure the longer the player is playing, the more chances of them buying gems. What else makes time gating for buying gems?
If anything it will harm the gem store.
People that stopped playing before this update, will look back and say “oh, great, if i come back i’ll be behind, i will just not come back” instead of “oh, sick update, gear is easier to get! maybe now i can play around with builds more freely in pve/wvw” (or something of the likes). People not coming back, less potential gem buyers.
People that hate the idea might quit (and i’m sure that’s a small amount). Less people playing, less buying gems.
Similarly, those that hate the idea but won’t quit, might boycott buying gems.
:D i wish we could do solo dungeon runs (and have it worth-while).
i would consider WvW endgame…. but that’s just me.
Raiding from WoW is an endgame, but it’s bad…. dislike the drama and the time commits (game effecting real life, bad)
(edited by Zero Day.2594)
In terms of WvW, there will ALWAYS be zerging … what’s better then a small army? a larger army (5 times the size!)! Please dont give the crap about, “but my smaller group is more skilled then the larger group”… yeah sure, previous guild, we could do 1:3 (20 to 60, not too bad) ratio when zerging and we would come out alive. But really when the ratio becomes 1:4 (20 to 80) or 1:5 (20 to 100) or 1:6 (20 to 120)… skilled players will start to get crushed by just sheer numbers.
I’m beginning to wonder if Anet has even considered the impact of all of this “vertical progression”(read: time sink). Ascended weapons will no doubt have higher stats than normal weapons, but they will also probably have higher base damage. This has an even greater impact on the differences between someone geared in full exotics vs full ascended gear.
The issue with this is what happens when you want to change your build? What happens if you dual wield 2 sets of weapons so you need 4 for just 1 build? What happens if you play more than 1 character? 2 characters? 3 characters? There have been other changes that haven’t been alt-friendly and that’s fine, but I think this is becoming too much. I can’t keep up with gearing all of the characters or builds that I play.
I realize people are just going to say “you don’t HAVE to get ascended gear”, but I like to play WvW and it’s silly to think that people are running around in gear that is 10-20% more effective than mine just because they play 1 character and I play 7.
Ascended Gear has already killed build diversity and alts in WvW. I’m 10% stronger with my warrior (I don’t play anymore). 10% increased damage will have a huge effect on the outcome of a battle in WvW, especially in small squads. Not to mention you’ll be 20 percent stronger with buffs. Ascended Gear and buffs have no place in PvP.
If you actually played you would have realize that ultimately ascended gear doesn’t affect WvW in the slightest. People love making justification about whatever, but it doesn’t affect WvW more so than the lack of build diversity and the in balance of classes.
You could argue that 1v1 in WvW it might affect, but the game is definitely not balanced for 1v1. And most of the time you are getting streamroll by a zerg anyways. in a ZvZ ascended gear isn’t going to be the deciding factor.
the biggest issues that affect power are all on the spvp side, everywhere else they are factors that supersede ascended gear.
The hard solid fact still remains, ascended users will be 10-20% stronger then non-ascended users. If you just think of a ZvZ or a group vs group (say 20 people on each side, one group having ascended geared and another containing no ascended geared) exchanging basic hits, the group containing ascended geared will do anywhere between 0-10% (0% – no one is geared, 10% everyone is geared) more than the group without ascended geared.
Personally, i don’t mind the ascended gear it self, the stats and such…. what i mind is how it’s acquired. Maybe if it was acquired the same way as exotics (cost/effort wise), I and maybe some of the other people wouldn’t kitten as much. But adding time gated mats… the kitten? I understand why WoW has it, to prolong it’s players subscription, but why does GW2 have it….? Gemstore? I guess the more days a player spends in a game the more likely they are to spend money in the gemstore (is that it?)?
Aside from the money-conspiracy theories…. the time gating will also create a huge gap between the gamers/hardcore and the casuals…. the gamers will work towards getting the gear, while the casuals will long in to jump around (sarcasm, they will play the game in their own way, and when they come to WvW they will get their faces rolled, leaving to go on that class’ forum to QQ, or when they get rejected from the party because somehow someone found out that they dont have ascended gear…) and leave maybe do something towards getting the armor maybe not. people that stop playing will also be behind x amount of days since they’ve stopped and when they resumed (giving people that quit a motive to not comeback( but how will they buy the gems if they dont come back… )).
IF they really wanted to add a time gated mechinic in the game… replace the RNG of getting a precursor with something time gated, so that you will know that in X amount of days/weeks/months you will get the precursor, instead of hoping for it. This way the crappy RNG aspect of getting a legendary is removed, yet no one is becoming 10% stronger.
TL/DR:
ASCENDED GEAR WITH TIME GATING IS STUPID FOR MILLIONS OF REASONS.
balance,builds,alts, CasualsVSgamers,grouping, picking up the game again,……….
As much as I love GuildWars (1 and 2), I hate this idea.
(edited by Zero Day.2594)
@Tobias
not going to argue with you, but you had to level up both LW and huntsman (resources, time), cool one fell into your lap from map completion (RNG, luck) just like you could say one fell into your lap after you beat a campaign in gw1 (gw2, you get a rare? geee thanks!). Dont remember how i got my weapons…. but if i dont means it was nothing special, not hard, not easy (though greens from bosses, were, very, very, easy), if you were going for the looks then yeah some skins would cost quite a bit.
i think you’re missing the point that, getting max stats in gw1 was easy…. going for the looks was hard.
Well max stat gear was very easy later in the game, but not so much easy to get it dropped with a sane Requirement and extra bonuses which you wanted. Such as Energy +5, Armor +5 . . . Health +30 . . .
like mrstealth said… the cost/effort of getting them is way easier than exotics (oh let’s not forget that they too need runes… and with ascended they will need infusions(time gated? lauries?))
Even say for a very specific set, 55monk or 55necro… even if you built/get the gear for you can use it farm out what it cost you. But that’s another issue….
@stale , sad but true…. GW1, your builds werent locked in by your gear… like i use pvt/zerker for most standard builds, condition builds would require a complete different set…. just feel nostalgic by the name.
@Astralporing , yup means that an ascended geared is that much deadlier then you in a fight. You can shrug it off, say it’s like using rares vs exotics, but fact remains they’re deadlier then you.
5.3%, damage, extra health you will be missing after being attacked. If you ever ran away with a sliver of health…
:/ wish they kept gw1 style of gearing…. max stats easy to get, cosmetics you worked for.
just bumping, hoping devs/designers will read it.
doubt anyone likes time gated stuff…. I would rather them not implement ascended gear/new mats in the next patch and take the time to better it (lots of ideas on forums… rarely replied to).
Kind of hope that gearing reverts back to GW1 style, where getting the max-stats was easy (though you aesthetically looked bad (opinion)). The rest of the gear (15k armor/FoW/…) was just to look pretty. And that was AWESOME! We could play around with our builds, having max-stats as a baseline that you meet and don’t exceed, with a peace of mind knowing that gear was easy to get. Re-specing (traits) didn’t cost anything, and it doesn’t now (thank god, please don’t change this). If we wanted to look pretty, we would make goals to get those pretty looking armors and work towards them.
I don’t want to pick sides nor sound like a smart a**…
But this type of topic has been coming up in games a lot, and I just want to throw in my two cents, give some food for thought. And it maybe a little too deep to be the issue.
There’s no such thing as ‘random’ in computing.
True that there are good ‘random’ number generators and there are some bad. To make it as close to truly random as possible, the developers would probably spend majority of their time developing that over the game it self, and although at that point you won’t be complaining about randomness, you will probably be complaining about why your character is 8×8 pixels. While I don’t doubt that they DID develop their own random number generator, it still isn’t truly random.
If you think I’m full of sh**, here are some links, or really just google it your self :
http://www.ics.uci.edu/~smyth/courses/ics178/random_number_generators_article.pdf
http://www.cs.yale.edu/homes/aspnes/classes/469/notes.pdf
http://computer.howstuffworks.com/question697.htm
The last one mentions “random natural event” being fed to the machine that generators randomness, at that point one can argue how sensitive the machine is to the event (how well does it pick it up)… but that’s a bit beyond this thread.
:/ something tells me this is left-over developer/test content.
i.e. the room with faces to test how the face (character’s, though by example on the wall) will follow a target (person in the room). floating sphere – reflection/projections?
