What: Steal
Why: A lot of skills these days are getting telegraphs because of OP problems. Steal does many things when traited: daze, rip and steal boons, stealth, and damage
It seems to be unblockable as well.
No other profession has a skill that can do this much crippling damage to a player. Mesmer has moa which is unblockable but it is also an elite.
At least give steal a tell so people can dodge it , maybe even a slower teleport that shows a trail or how about change the skill so it can only be used in melee( makes perfect sense to add a tiny bit of realism into a fantasy game) . So far its just luck and uncanny anticipation. Anet nerfed point blank shot, so why not this?
Suggestion: Steal needs to be telegraphed

What: Shadow Refuge
Why: Because it’s too strong.
Suggestion: How to make shadow refuge slightly more balanced (pick some, not all)
- Add a real cast time (as OP suggested). 0.25s isn’t a real cast time, it literally just makes the skill not able to be used as a psuedo-stunbreak.
- Remove the healing it provides (at least on downed people). Currently, SR is like a short Elixir R, in addition to the whole stealth thing and being a dark field.
- No longer able to drop at range, simply a player-based skill so that there is risk to dropping this on a team-mate (besides lost CD).

But evilapprentince, if we nerf the good skills enough the bad skills will start to look good.
:/ Watching this thread how it goes before adding it to the nerf wish list. Although, technically it is a nerf… and can very well be added, but so far it lacks the reek of but hurt (puns bypass filters!) …
Only nit picky thing is, is:
3) If you stay within that ring for the full duration, you will have stealth permanently, if not you will instantly be revealed.
I tried… it runs out… you’re not stealthed “permanently”. :P But I guess it’s just over-exaggeration of how much longer the stealth lasts as opposed when it’s gotten by other means.
If they are destroying you then you should be using them, Zefrost.
But yolo, he has too much pride to use such cheap tactics… And also he might blindly be in love with one build….
(I’m not picking on you dude, I’ve done the same thing in another post too to you. Just pointing out the “noob” reasoning behind why he’s not using it and I know you probably have seen the same reasoning elsewhere. Just speeding up the process of killing this QQ thread.)
…
Yeah no, I don’t think a dictionary definition is appropriate for what it means to
spam abilities in an MMO.
:D Definitions of things may vary from person to person, context to context…
Mine for instance, for spamming, is just repeatedly using and re-using the same skill/action/small set of actions. Which is more in line with the dictionary definition, I would think. Whether the person is punished for it or not, is another story on it’s own that doesn’t fall into the definition of “spamming”… And this little bit here shows emotion from nova, not to make his definition of it any less true (for himself or for whoever accepts it).
(edited by Zero Day.2594)
MAAASSSIVE buff to venoms a couple weeks ago (CD decreased from 45 to 40 seconds!).
Nothing much has changed actually… There was a time where rangers stole our QQ spotlight for a bit… it was kind of boring on the forums during that time.
Glad to see you back though.
I don’t get all of the unoriginal buzz word regurgitation like “spam”.
As you suggesting your teams players spend time in a fight being idle? If so, that is probably a bad idea. If not, they are “spamming”, as you would put it, attacks as much as anyone else then.
Spam is using skills carelessly yet not punished for it.
Um, Google (no it’s not the All-Mighty, but it does have a good dictionary for all the terms) thinks otherwise:
Spam:
noun
noun: spam; plural noun: spams; noun: Spam
1. irrelevant or inappropriate messages sent on the Internet to a large number of recipients.
unwanted or intrusive advertising on the Internet.
“an autogenerated spam website”
2. trademark
a canned meat product made mainly from ham.
verb
verb: spam; 3rd person present: spams; past tense: spammed; past participle: spammed; gerund or present participle: spamming
1.send the same message indiscriminately to (large numbers of recipients) on the Internet.
:| So I think what you’re trying to describe falls closely under the 1st/3rd definition.
“Carelessly yet not punished for it” – that’s very vague. For instance… in sc2, you can do a 6-pool rush as a zerg, that’s where you “spam”/create nothing but zerglings after you’ve created a spawning pool at 6 supply (gist of it)… Now that tactic is considering “cheesy” and you “spam”, it can actually get you into platinum pretty easily (at least I was able to in 3v3’s)… BUT even if it’s “spamming”, the very bad thing about it is if the opponent counters you, it sets you up for a world of hurt – punishing you for it a bit or losing you the game (if the opponent knows what they’re doing). So I guess by your definition doing 6-pool isn’t “spamming” zerglings since it does punish the player that’s doing it (provided the opponent knows a way around it).
@Vikk
This “balance” forum is the most troll forum out of all the GW2 forums… This is the place where people come to QQ… that or the specific class forums by which they got owned by.
It’s a fun place to screw around.
(edited by Zero Day.2594)
While we suspect that the OP is a necro or a guard, we may be wrong…
What we know for certain is that the OP’s weakness is all the things he has listed, so if you ever meet him in solo’q or in WvW, just roll with one of those options he provided and it should be an easy day for you!
Like, reading these forums can help one make a build that terrorizes the most amount of people in battle – based on what’s being QQ’ed about.
…
Also, don’t complain about conditions when you don’t bring any condi cleanse.
…
But But…
That’s exactly what an exploit is!
(Googled)
ex·ploit:
make full use of and derive benefit from (a resource).
“500 companies sprang up to exploit this new technology”
use (a situation or person) in an unfair or selfish way.
“the company was exploiting a legal loophole”
benefit unfairly from the work of (someone), typically by overworking or underpaying them.
“making money does not always mean exploiting others”
Seems like it is in fact an exploit! They’re taking advantage of me not having cleanse… NERF THEM ALL!!!! I mean… FIX THEM ALL!!!!
What the Meow did I just read?
hahaha
but yes there are OP classes and we know wh otehy Meow are.
Yeah, those meow pistol/pistol thieves!!
I saw a dev play it once… and man he was OP.
Let’s wrap all that up, and for simplicity (and ignorance sake) say that Caltrops are OP and possibly contain an exploit.
If they nerf them and this still proceeds, than Steal is at fault! if that doesn’t fix the problem, then CnD is at fault…. then sneak attack… then shadow strike….
If that’s all been nerfed than maybe we will pick other skills/traits to nerf since the problem might still persist.
:| but you guys don’t make sense….
her pa der_p….
:P I like your solution NinjaEd
(btw I was trolling/mocking those that do cry… – just to speed up this thread…)
(edited by Zero Day.2594)
…
Just because you are running around with a build that doesn’t take conditions into account doesnt mean that condition build should be nerfed for your sake.
…
But that’s exactly why they’re so OP… what if i dont take into account conditions, should i be penalized for playing the build i want? nope… should i be penalized for not seeing it coming? nope because i expect a “fair” fight with my opponent, where ofc i either win or force the guy to run away from my terror.
I don’t think it can be…
Since what it does is just simplify something that can be done on a piece of paper (basic math and keeping track of items)… you can do it with an excel spreadsheet too…
If anything they might be using w/e information you give about what items you buy and sell to profit themselves. But this is just more of a tin-hat theory than anything else.
(edited by Zero Day.2594)
I mostly see the class I get owned by, because I’m but* hurt… QQ
I assume, because Brandon skipped over all the REAL problems with each class, the purpose of this post was to give a satirical touch to all the whining and bi—hing on the “professional balance” forum.
Yup…
Sadly a lot of people’s suggests are no where near balance changes and are more of cries after being beaten up by said class multiple times.
The funny and unfortunate thing is, devs follow through and listen to some, for instance the Choking Gas change… not sure if it was because of a post a while back, but it just seems a little too coincidental. That’s one example that really got caught in my head (soon the caltrops will follow suit), if you read over the nerf wish list, some did come true.

Lol
Thanks for including the Nerf Wish List…
Feel free to contribute to it guys.
…
you could be using it yourself if it is so effective.
…
But it’s soooooo cheeeeese, real players with skill never use cheese.
(lol)
joking aside, someone had the same complaint about choking gas a while a go… and vola a patch came that made it reveal the thief… so don’t worry guys, the “cheese” will go away. So start thinking of another thing you find cheesy.
No I don’t, Zero Day. It’s PvP. Git gud or git out.
Well kitten .
Seems like you got a long way to go in your poetry Bella.
Also, I really love your attempt at being the next Burnfall in terms of your writing/response style… but you need to emphasize words… here let you with that
@ yolo swaggins.2570
I had no choice but to become a roamer
because whenever I log into WvW
there was no commander
you said thieves are good for roaming
does that mean I must make a thief just like everyone else??
when I was roaming in WvW
90% of the encounters were thieves
does that mean I must become a part of 90% just like everyone else??
NO
I will not become a part of 90%
I will not become a thief
I think ANET should look into this
and find out why 90% of roamers are thieves
and find out why thieves cant join zergs
maybe thieves need some buffs in some area
because most thieves do not want to fight my condi engineer
they just run away after exchanging few blows
I think stealth mechanic needs to change
because I can never killl a thief that decides to run
and my reason for this change is because
in WvW, Borderlands Bloodlust Finisher plays a huge part
if you stealth and run away 10 times you save 10 points
and it is same as saving a Tower
Not as poetic either, but you have to develop that style yourself…
Now yolo swaggins… do you feel bad after re-reading that with bolded words?

Don’t worry it will be “fixed” just like Choking Gas was.
Thanks for your contribution, i will add it to the Nerf Wish List
The good thing about thief nerfs is…
Those that cried for them got what they wanted.
(seriously, this could be made into the next “nerf wish list” but where we praise nerfs)
Part 2/2
3. Animals should remove Stealth.
npc monsters or pets with a well-developed sense of sound or smell should be able to locate foe in stealth
this means most pets should be able to apply reveal effect every second within ~1000 radius with unlimited number of targets
kitten , you have no real life analogy here.
Maybe they could bark in the general direction of the stealthed creature… maybe lunge at it’s direction if the pet is brave enough to do so…
At the same time an opponent that can anticipate where the stealthed creature is can attempt to hit them. If anticipation isn’t your strong suit in combat, randomly swinging the sword might do the trick.
So here, you’re just asking for a pet buff to reveal/apply reveal on stealth characters. I guess another Sic’em, or a permanent Sic’em that auto-does it self.
4 Blocking should remove Stealth.
you are wearing a football helmet with eyes closed and if someone hits your helmet with a bat, you will be able to feel the impact and you will know which direction the bat came from. this means blocking stealth attack should remove Stealth.
Yes, you will not only be able to feel it, you will also be probably disoriented by it (so let’s apply confusion!). At the same time, if they did hit you with a bat, a smart stealthed person would move away and hit you from another angle, keeping you confused… Or do you expecting to fight people with an IQ lower than yours? Hmmm…
Feed back again?
5 It’s your turn now
there are many different mechanics in this game
give us your suggestions so that we can make these mechanics more understandable
Well. I wouldn’t cry for help after I got beat. I would try to improve myself. I would expect a “fix” to never come. Worst comes to worst, i would roll the said class i had problems with, and reap the souls of noobs just like they’ve reaped mine.
Feed back/Mechanic change? Providing feed back on stealth alone can ultimately break an entire class to the point of uselessness (maybe an over-exaggeration but, i doubt you will see many thieves left in pvp or roaming in WvW after this change). That being said, if some sort of feed back was to be provided on stealth, it would require a full on rework of stealth (many “buffs” and many “nerfs” – but in reality, just a complete overhaul). There have been MANY suggestions in the past, since this subject is almost as beaten to death as that horse that has the word “Mounts” written on it. And yet here we are, nothing has changed since… why? because the devs have their own agenda. Maybe they do listen, maybe they don’t… but they’re doing what they think will be right, whether they will do what I like or you like, we don’t know. When will they do it? We don’t know that either. What can we do? we can stop crying rivers of tears (although they are delicious) and attempt to find a solution by ourselves for ourselves. Attempting to overcome something, struggling to do something, seems to be how we’ve evolved thus far… so try not to fall behind. (Hey look at me, I made a real life analogy just like you!)
Holly hell I was bored tonight…
(Many spelling and grammatical fixes have been made…)
(edited by Zero Day.2594)
Part 1/2
…
lets apply stealth ability to real life situations
…
And this is where it begins…
1. Damages taken should remove Stealth.
If you turn all the light off in your room and swing a bat in the darkness with your eyes closed, you will be able to feel the impacts whenever you hit something with your bat
this means when we hit a foe in stealth with melee attack we should be able to locate the foe in stealth or at least we should see the white damage numbers pop up
lets say there is a crystal clear wall of glass in my backyard
I throw a baseball and if the baseball hits something and bounces off it means I know there is something invisible
this means when we shoot a bullet or an arrow and if the bullet or the arrow gets stuck in the middle of the air it means the bullet or the arrow is stuck inside something invisible and we should be able to locate the foe in stealth unless the foe pulls out the all the bullets and arrows or at least we should see the white damage numbers pop up
Great analogy, creative. So, unless you’re hitting an object, creatures/people tend to move away from the position of where they were originally hit. It might sound strange, but if I was to hit you with a bat you would probably be in another place after it, you would either be on the ground or starting to limp/run away to avoid taking another hit. Which brings me to the next “sense” of reality, if you hit someone with a bat… well it should gravely injure them. So, you might as well ask for that too.
Now think of it in game, you have in fact hit the stealthed person, you have in fact hurt them, and their natural reaction is to move away from the place where they were hurt… Now if they don’t, you can continue to swing away (which btw, you should be doing anyways when fighting a stealthed foe).
Yeah, if you throw a baseball at the same exact location twice, presumably one throw would hit the object and the second throw would miss the object – since the object might have been knocked away by the first baseball throw.
Unfortunately, only some games support arrows stick out of their victims for a certain period of time. This is not one of them, and this game doesn’t support arrows sticking out of people. So, sorry, it can’t work here.
White numbers pop’ing up – AH, so in all this weird analogy, what you were asking for is feedback? Yes, maybe there should be feedback – but that would require a lot more thought put into it than analogies to real life (and trust me, there have, yet nothing has been done).
2. Some Conditions should remove Stealth.
(Bleeding) If the foe in stealth drips blood we should be able to see the blood dripping
we should see the red stuff spouting out like a fountain or is it too gruesome?
(Burning) If the foe in stealth has flames all over its body with black and gray smoke we should be able to see those flames and smoke and the foe in stealth should be turning black like ash
(Bleeding) Yeah and they should die of bleeding unless they patch themselves up.
(Burning) Yeah and they should die within a minute of being engulfed in flames.
While this game does support debuffs, that emulate these conditions, they dont support textural/lighting impact (aside from fire). So again, sorry but this game can’t support it.
But I sense that what you’re trying to get at here is getting some feedback?
(edited by Zero Day.2594)
The good thing about thief nerfs is…
They warrant massive buffs like 5s CD reduction on all venoms.
God this thread could be like a thanksgiving thanks thread, expect it starts with “the good thing about thief nerfs is….”
What if venoms are meant for PvE? Condition damage PvE? Certainly no use in dungeons, eh. Maybe solo roaming in open world?
/shrug
They (anet) already believe venoms to be for a condition build. It’s been said by carl in the ready up videos worded along the lines of “now you can buff your party’s condition damage using your own stats”.
I bet he forgot to mention how MAAASSIIVE that buff to your party’s condition damage is.

However this build is known for like, two years? Also, it’s survivability was nerfed recently. Still good build though.
:P All the builds have been known for years. Since there’s so little combinations thanks to weapons designated which skills you use and significant “balance” changes come at the rate of the blue moon (~2-3 years – yes over exaggeration) – and when “balance” changes do come, they’re rarely expanding diversity and more like narrowing down into which builds are now better than before since the others have taken a nerf hit.
(rant over)
:/ I feel like this was just made so we could kitten about saying every patch is a nerf and we never get buffs…
Also to hint at what they want us to play.
This is just a personal opinion…
Channeled spells tracking someone in stealth feels half done.
It should either break stealth if someone tries to enter (no reveal applied), or
Prevent stealth/apply reveal, or
The channeling spell should be canceled.
Any of those three above make more sense than what’s in the game now. More than likely most would prefer one of the first two.
yeah i get this problem in wvw as well. Anyone know how to fic this?
An uninstall generally helps with this problem.
Be warned though, if you re-install the problem will come back. What if they reinstall and wait 6 months?!?!
The problems only get worse if you reinstall later on, so it’s best advised not to reinstall.
yeah i get this problem in wvw as well. Anyone know how to fic this?

So I didn’t respond to this thread originally because sometimes I don’t feel like poking the hornets nest, but the “-or-” suggestion on number (2) is a moot point, since steal cant proc fire/air/blood (can’t crit).
Also this list is long because they split up single abilities, but I digress.
Yeah as much as I found that thread more legitimate than others, he’s still crying more than anything. The thief essentially becomes a one trick pony at that point. Plus his two suggestions aren’t exactly “hey let’s change this for the better” and more like “hey please fix my problem, I’m not sure how though” (first point).
In the spirit of keeping these forums a cleaner place, and to document the many various requests asked by many various posters, I’ve taken liberty of adding your steal adjust to the Nerf Wish List .

What: Steal
Why: Summary of steal when using the current thief build (30 0 10 0 30)
1) 1.244 dmg (usually more)
2) 2 boons stolen (priority on stability)
3) giving these boons to you and nearby allies in a radius of 240
4) grants vigor for 10 seconds
5) grants you and allies in a radius of 360 fury for around 10 sec
6) grants you and allies in a radius of 360 swiftness for around 10 sec (and 1 might stack)
7) heals you for 2.040
8) puts poison on the enemy for 13 seconds
9) dazes the target (which goes through stab because its first priority on boons removed)
10) when using the current backstab build with panic strike it afflicts weakness for 51/4 sec on the enemy
11) recharges all skills of one type (traps, venoms etc)
12) gives you 2 initiative
13) has a 900 range
14) is instacast
15) can even be casted if you cannot even port to the target currently because he is on an obstacle (effects still proc)
16) only has 21 1/2 seconds cooldown
17) ports to the target (instant gapcloser)
18) you get a skill that in most cases counters your enemy for a certain amount of time
Can you not see how this is utterly broken?
To be honest I don’t acually mind having such a thing on thief because thief requires at lot of skill to be played competetively but the problem is that even tho the thief uses a lot of trait points to improve his “steal” ability in order to improve his survivability he still deals a ridiculous amount of dmg by double procs (air-fire, fire-blood)
Suggestion:
1.) Add counterplay to steal (you can only predict it atm)
2.) Remove some effects of steal – or – nerf double procs but make up for the nerfs by buffing other things on classes (not thief) that rely on these procs to have sustained dmg
Thread: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/balance/Steal-is-too-strong-needs-adjustments
it’s funny when people don’t realize that thieves are designed to spam.
Optimized into spamming…
Why throw in a backstab/death blossom on a target that’s bellow 25% health when heartseeker does so much more.
Just one example.
lol.. They just need to balance all classes so no one will be OP..
How hard is it? :P
…
Extremely, without ever hope for perfect success.
That’s not to say they’re doing a good job at the moment either…
Soon™
/15chars
Yeah, it just needs bug fixing… since a single blade of grass seems to obstruct it, maybe adjust init cost/damage/cast time.
A block would make more sense on a sword though. For instance, if we ever get the ability to duel wield swords… maybe it will have it’s place there.
This discussion again… dunno whether to facepalm or to grab some popcorn…
Anyway, I’ll throw a bone:“Efficiency” and Don’t be a burden on purpose within a group/team – these are the reason “meta” builds exist… You can feel pigeonholed, and try to fight it all you want, but there is just a simple thing within this or any other competitive game with builds that have a more efficient way of combatting… From Trading Card Games to Real Time Strategy games… So whatever Anet does to balance things – there will always be just a small window of things to pick since there is the “Rule of Efficiency”
Edit:
Believe it or not, Pokémon has a meta…
Plus given how many options/combinations there are in this game (weapon skills locked…) it becomes even more apparent how few meta-builds there are.
Just for everyone’s reference, where OP/this thread originated from:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/thief/Shadow-arts-needs-to-be-removed
Originally started by glock as a QQ thread.
Shadows Embrace
Changed from “Remove one condition when you enter stealth” to “Remove one condition when you gain Revealed”.
This would promote going in and out of stealth more often. Which seems to be the pet-peeve of most <term> players.
Shadows Rejuvenation
Changed to heal for a small amount (or removed totally while stealthed) to heal for a greater amount while revealed.
I would prefer small amount in stealth and greater amount out of stealth, though I guess kind of biased opinion – I guess you could remove the healing while stealthed.
Overall it will marginally improve survivability, especially since the healing amount probably wont be anything too crazy.
The reason for that is, without evades/dodging (ignoring this, since then it goes into “effective health” and “effective other kitten”), health is treated as a buffer (till death), armor is treated as something that mitigates damage, and health regen (obviously) regens the health buffer. If the buffer is too small then the regen won’t have enough time to make a significant difference as the health buffer is depleted way too quickly which is also dependent on how paper thin the armor is. Considering thieves have the lowest (along with the guardian and some other prof?) base health pool and mediocre armor, increasing health regeneration will have a less of an impact than increase the base health pool for starters (then probably regen).
All that is to say, it will have very small impact. A nerf for people that use it right now in stealth and a buff for people outside of stealth.
Unfortunately ANet dug themselves a pretty deep hole when they made the thief (and RNG/reward system but that’s the BLC TP topic on the other forum) the way it is…
now it’s just fun to watch them and people attempt to climb out of it.
(edited by Zero Day.2594)
omg so many geniuses!!! I wonder why you are not all devs….
oh… i actuality know!
Not defending everyone, but just because they’re not devs doesn’t exactly void their ideas.
Whether they’re devs or not is their own decision and choice in whatever career they might have or will have.
Yes with healing power AND runes of the dolyak AND shadows rejuvenation AND regeneration boon AND cactus soup a glass thief could heal ~10% of their life per second passively !
God I could have sworn there was another class with a one healing skill that did that. Though it was toned down, considering it was only one skill.

What: Shadow arts.
Why: From a main thief, when I see SA thieves in PvP it just kittens me off.
1- SA players are useless because they deal low damage and cant cap while in stealth
2- any player that uses the SA trait line becomes bad so its unhealty for the game
3- sitting in stealth forever should not be rewarding because its poor gameplay
Shadow arts makes the thief the most faceroll class in the game. and everytime I see an SA thief I feel like deleting my thief due to how shameful that build is.
Suggestion: Shadow arts needs to be removed. OR. Solution, shadow rejuvanation now only heals for 20 hp per second, so if you wanna heal you would need Healing power gear

Woot! Finally another addition to the Nerf Wish List!
Moa is cheesy, but it is worth it when you kill somebody while moa’d.
It’s funny because I remember a lot of people actually being startled when I started to attack them as a moa. The reaction was almost “WTF?!?! it can attack me?!”
