With no grind, they mean no mandatory grind. There is no gear threadmill.
You don’t have to grind in order to keep up. All the grind in this game is just for cosmetics. Sure there is ascended, but that’s only like 5% better than exotic so you don’t really need it.

So is there grind for just cosmetics or cosmetics and stats?
5% is 5%, it’s there, it exists, you can’t deny it. You can choose to ignore it, convince yourself it’s not needed, attempt to convince others it’s not needed, but the fact of the matter remains, it’s a 5% increase in stats.

You can’t list the soon-to-be might nerf, as it’s not specifically target at the thief. It effects the thief, just like everyone else.

So what’s this thread supposed to accomplish? (Sniffing for tears… delicious, delicious tears…)

Why not…. global nerfs like the crit nerf and soon to be might nerf hurts theif more than most cause thieves compound these stats more than most to get our damage out

Not to mention that the intent on the might nerf is to nerf cele ele and engi but since might doesn’t effect condi as much as power people who run power only get hurt more

I don’t really considering it a nerf against a thief simply because it’s target at everyone. If I choose to view it as a nerf to a thief, it gives me an extra (crappy) reason to dislike how they’re balancing things. So, yeah, choose not to think of it that way – weird I know.

Thief Question

Possibly an Asura… make him as small as possible so when you’re jumping around, keeping track of you will be a pain in the kitten . That’s really the only thing, and it’s kind of minor.

Hopefully between $20-40. Closer to the lower end too, since it’s not a stand-alone xpac. Else there will be a barrier of $40+$40 = $80 (optionally more to get all the living story) to get into the game – perhaps they could package it up for people for $50-60. Content wise it doesnt really make sense to make it worth as much as the base game itself.

Who knows, there’s no date yet either. Gut feeling, it’s in the summer.

No one thinks they might throw support thief a bone? Like maybe a staff thief (a caster, not melee thief). Think about the fact that 1 of the 2 specializations they mentioned was a druid for rangers, effectively making a fighter class into a caster class.

Spear fighting thief might also be a thing(a bruiser thief like others have mentioned ) if the trailer is indicative of anything.

Afaik, we don’t know how many specializations there are going to be per class, but I would think it would be at least 2 per because it would be dumb to only be able to specialize into one thing.

Also, they might have enough specializations to cover the “play how you want” phrasing with support, control, and dps specializations on each class (that might be wishful thinking)

Edit: Just to expand on what I think(hope) might happen

There would be 3 specializations per class: Control, Support, DPS
Each specialization could still use our basic setups like the current traits and weapons we have now, but would gain different things based on their specialization.

Examples (again, pure speculation and wishful thinking):

Support: Gets staff and Scepter and is a mage like class(caster)
Control:Get’s a polearm/spear, a mace, OH sword, and longbow (brawler)
DPS: Gets an Axe, Greatsword, and Rifle (Assassin)

By splitting up classes like this since the base classes are pretty decently balanced right now (especially with the might stack nerfing coming up), they could balance each specialization individually.

This would also bring them closer to all weapons for all classes like they said they wanted to do near the beginning.

That would actually be neat. There are a few games that do that – allowing each class to be either of the three rolls. Though I doubt they will add a taunt mechanic in. Like there’s a bit of group healing already (no single target), there just isn’t a taunt of any sort.

I also kind of wondering if we will be able to swap between specializations… It would suck a bit if we’re locked in after choosing one.

Like I know in GW1 you can swap your secondary profession, but this is a bit different.

Duelist – go toe-to-toe with opponents stealthless (more defenses outside of stealth), perhaps swords/greatswords.
Assassin – Just as squishy as it is now, relies on stealth (and maybe venoms), focuses on bursting down targets – and then probably dieing. Who knows what weapon.
Bandit – focuses on ambushing, trapping (since ANet has a kitten for traps… chances are there will be a trapping spec). Maybe rifle?

Expansion and thieves

I’m actually a bit happy because:
Precursor craft – It’s still probably cost, in materials, just as much as it is right now to buy it.
Specialization – I’m going to be an assassin finally. There better be the assassin specialization.
Bit more kitten to do in GW2 – the rest of the expansion.

They haven’t mentioned anything about balance yet… >:D but when people hear the mention of assassins they will be in tears…

And actually, with the specialization, we might have a chance to be less stealth reliant… like they could introduce a Duelist spec, that is aimed to be out-of-stealth bruiser.

All-in-all we know that an expansion is coming, and what it’s core features.

But isn’t there a gap between the acquisition of ascended armor and legendaries? Like people are taking only a fraction of the time to make ascended armor than to make a legendary. They need to add another tier to bridge that gap.

From where do you think that the might stacking meta came from?

Anet has an OBLIGATION of tweaking the less used skills until they become viable.

Really, that would be impressive… Sometimes it seems the changes are a bit random…
I don’t think they have an obligation, that’s a bit too strong. Not sure they even have a true/strong interest. It should be in their interest though.


To me this is a further power nerf (although I know it’s also a condi nerf) and I feel that thieves don’t really need that or no one does*. So, I might (haha) be able to buffer it, but at the moment I’m just a bit annoyed.

-* I still don’t know enough about other classes to say whether or not this will really effect them or if they also have desperate builds to deal with the April 15th crit nerf.

Yeah that’s what it seems to me too. They attempted to do the same thing with the crit dmg to ferocity switch, this might just be a continuation of it. Pretty sure it also stems from a PvE context (more so than others), where conditions are less used due to how they’re stacked amongst a group of people and not per individual basis (which would have it’s own problems, like bosses melting too fast) – that and bosses having that buff that also discourages condition usage.

Either way, the might changes I don’t consider them a direct/targeted nerf to thieves since it’s happening across all profs. Just a nerf/change across the whole board.

I actually don’t think anet really cares or they come from an entirely different point of view – as seen with the white sword changes in wvw – to them solo wvw roamers are non existent.

Well, it’s not so much to benefit a specific play style in this case.
If you record which skills/traits are used by which class on which map/map-group (PvE, PvP, WvW), you can infer builds/meta’s by looking at the top-used. From there you may be able to see how/why each skill is used in relation to other top skill/traits from other classes. On the opposite side of the spectrum will be skills that are used a lot less, or complete not used at all. You can then compare top used skills with less/not used skills and see how they can be changed or replaced to fit in with the top skills.
Not to say this is how you balance, but this kind of data can help.

:P It’s kind of like if grocery stores collected what items each person bought (over the span of say a few years), they would be able to infer things like when you had guests over, when you had a birthday/some other event, diets, some physical characteristics (are you a fat-ass?), health concerns, and so on… not sure why or for what they would need that kind of information but hey it’s possible to do so from your grocery receipts.

Well, my build will be nerfed as I rely on might stacks.. thanks anet!

Dude it’s still viable if you stack enough. It’s just overpowered when you stack too much and others don’t get to. Like thief compared to engi for example. Dude I get close to 20stakcs easily on my engi… Like permanent might. Plus it buffs condi dmg n power base. Unless if you’re running a p/x or u bleed with d/d 3 you won’t have any problem.

Yeah, solo roamer – I can’t really stack that much of might, nice that you can as an engi.

Perhaps, with the coming of HoT there has been some major organizational restructuring… firing/hiring employees type of deal.
Or… they realized that the thief forum hasn’t been receiving enough QQ’s lately and are attempting to promote QQ’ing on here…
Or… it will get reworked before release

Typical Thief life cyle riding on the ArenaNet wheel to changes.

Sometimes we’re on top of the wheel, other times we’re crushed at the bottom while the driver engages the parking break.

still more viable then most.
still so viable, still tons of thieves running around in pvp, still tons of thieves in top pvp team
still tons of thieves every where, still one of the top DPS PvE.
still tons of thief roamers every where in WvW.

define most lol, thief is more viable than ranger really and maybe necro… rest is way better… pvp wise at least

. thief is more viable then all zerker builds and is dominating in that area since ever, and is on like every top team, the only classes that appears more then thief are ele and engi. and probably on pair or more then warriors.
while you see so little guardian, so little ranger, so little necro, so little mesmer, so little. that’s most already.

and just a heads up, thief has always been and will be always in the meta game. unless anet do some major kitten up on it’s mechanics.

ANet gets cash flow from the gem store. A lot more than they got with GW1. This is why they could afford to make a free expansion, and I really really REALLY hope they do, because a paid expansion would fragment the playerbase.

In that case, GW2 would have gone free to play. There is no point whatsover in having the game B2P when you can make it free to play and get tripple the population and far more people buying gems if you are not going to charge box pricee for new content and there are really few people buying the game, 2 years after release.

The fact that Anet has a B2P model in the first place means that they have to create content fitting that model. And to have the game B2P while not realising expansions/paid content makes no sense whatsover.

But clearly having a cash-shop (or a subscription for some games) shows that they’re in need of money, and w/o it the game will go afloat. I seem to have too much, and must throw it at them and convenience others that they need it and they should throw their money at them too.

Guild wars 2 is the only product keeping Anet’s pants up. Ncsoft has aion and blade and soul in korea to sustain their profits. The point being if guild wars 2 becomes unprofitable they are going to be firing staff in Arenanet just like Ncsoft did to Ncwest.

Also You do need a way to generate cash flow, I have no idea why you seem to think they don’t. Also I doubt any kickstarter would have enough money to play 300 employees at a rate of 30-100k. Then again I suspect your whole post was just a joke.

See someone people seem to lump the survival of a game with how it’s (the game itself – not the company as a whole) able to get money, some even bubble it up and say that this one game is responsible for the survival of the company as a whole. So, no it wasn’t a sarcastic joke. It’s like saying D3 will not survive another month because it doesn’t a cashshop or a subscription, and golly gosh how did they manage to pull of releasing an expansion – santa must have dropped them a couple mills to fund that.

NCsoft also has a few other games besides the two you’ve listed… As for becoming either unprofitable, I never suggested that… Pretty sure they were profitable upon release, like they didn’t spend some odd millions of dollars to make less than that when released… Otherwise things would be different now. The gemsales is more like extra fuel for them, that may or may not be used as we are expecting it to (we really have no solid proof the the money is going into developement of GW2, we hope so, we assume so, but we’re not NCSoft’s/ANet’s finicial employees that handle budgets and whatnot).

Besides just cash flow from games… pretty sure you can buy/trade their stock.

Weirdly enough, GW1 didn’t have a cashshop until around Nightfall, yet somehow mananged to have a nice stream of updates, release an expansion and start/complete a good portion of the next expansion – considering how they must have been so hurt for money (being sarcastic after the “-” and before the “(”).

That’s a terrible argument since guild wars 2 arguably requires more resources to run than guild wars 1 which it does. Arenanet is 300+ versus ~50 when guild wars 1 was being made.

Secondly, it isn’t about if they have money. From an investor standpoint, Ncsoft has literally ZERO reason to give the expansion for free. They already know a lot of people are going to buy it, it would be like leaving money on the in other to please a few people who wont buy the expansion.

That was me actually since I was convinced the GW2 profits were being siphoned off to help develop other games published by NCSoft such as Wildstar; it’s all in the past now as we have enough circumstantial evidence to indicate that as expansion is coming.

The idea was sound think of it as when a nonprofit applies and gets a grant for a specific project, legally that money can only be applied to the project that the grant was for, not any other parts of the nonprofit’s budget. That Kickstarter would have made us patrons of a specific art project so to speak.

As sound as the idea was (though, who knows how much cost it would have actually covered)… It’s a very bad idea for us as customers. It can possibly open up another door for milking us. Cash-shops, Subscriptions, and now… Kickstarter projects.



There is one thing for certain though, we are getting easier precursors.

The hype-building is real.
I will gladly buy a ticket onto this hype-train.

Some people think that Anet is sponsored by Santa or something. Things cost money, games cost money. Dont expect them to give games away?!

They do, but by their current expected revenue they can afford to pay every single one of their employees over a $100k annual salary, including bottom-tier customer support workers while still maintaining their infrastructure, building expenses, etc.

The money has already been spent if the content is complete, anyways, seeing as ANet has repeatedly stated they will make no announcements until the content is guaranteed to be released, due to the outrage from lack of delivery of certain WIP items which could not be finished before.

ANet fully paid for all development costs of the game and way more before the game even released. Gem store users account for revenue likely in the hundreds of millions annually. I get that games cost money, but it’s not like they’re hurting for cash, and the cost has already been paid for.

Also to add, GW2 isn’t the only product that’s keeping ANet’s, or should I say NCSoft’s, pants up.

:/ It’s a bit strange how people believe and think that games NEED either a subscription or some sort of money flow… Hell someone a while a go even wanted to throw more money at ANet and proposed a kick-starter event to fund an expansion. Lol…

I can’t wait to see all the whining when they announce the level cap increase. They said if they ever did an expansion they would increase the level cap, but people seem to always just put their fingers in their ears and hum when it is brought up…

Eric Flannum did say it in an interview, but Id’ have no idea how to go about looking for it. What I believe he said is that they’d like to raise the level cap.

One thing to point out, the youtube and the nowgamer link is before the game was released… so the idea has been around even before the release of the game…
Still wouldn’t get my hopes up, there has been so many flops in the past couple years when it comes to mmorpg’s and sequel releases….

On the flip side, the best thing to do… is to not board the hype train, possibly completely forget about the game, so that when some sort of LS update comes around, you will be like “oh, nice, neat – think i will play for 2 hours”. Instead of “booo hooo hoo where’s ma expansions/whatever-high-hopes i had”.

I like to think that it was just an odd coincidence, honestly.

As for formulating it into a way that sounds like a buff, that’s easy! Let’s take for instance:

See, if I still had some hope for the game and the thief-class (no, it’s not because I’m bummed about the thief class that I can’t bring my self to play the game, there are other game issues), I would have probably originally responded directly to you instead of Cynz and would have probably said something like “Yaya, rejoice! We’ve been forgotten this patch! Celebrate! We get to keep our builds for another day/patch iteration!”

They just didn’t do a full find-and-replace-all, it’s coming as tooltip fixes in future patches. They gotta leave some work form themselves to do, right? Otherwise what else would they be doing.

Hmm, I don’t know. “Thief’s Reward” is not as catchy as “Assassin’s Reward” even though you have not assassinated anyone thus deserve no reward.

Maybe then they just haven’t gotten around to adding the words “rogue”, “ninja”, and “bandit” into the mix. That would make more sense as it would be a subtle way of hinting that the “thief” is the archetype of these roles/classes/profs.
That’s a lot of design decisions right there, couple months worth anyways. So maybe we have yet to see the changes.

Because the design aspect is all in your head…
Thiefs steal kitten – nothing about what weapons they prefer… I mean modern days can range from knives to stolen/illegal rifles….
Assassin’s typically assassinate people, by any means necessary – preferably a way that doesn’t get themselves kill.
Ninja’s are similar to assassin’s…

Also, shouldn’t it also bother you that a Warrior has a longbow with 1200 range (pistol is 900 untraited, traited it’s 1200 if the bullet bounces)? I mean they’re not Bowman or Rangers, they’re Warriors… doesn’t that bother you OP? I mean if we’re going to be talking about how other MMO’s have done it, then surely the Warrior archetype almost never has a long range weapon either.

This sounds like fun.

Think this guy got it the most accurate.
Though the glass cannon (for the thief) should look more beaten up from being constantly nerfed almost (i think they buffed venoms (LOL) last patch so we couldn’t kitten about how it’s every patch) every patch, it’s also attached to/pulled by a pony that has a sign around it’s neck that says “One Trick”.

Are you suggesting that thieves don’t have great survivability in not only stealth but also evades (among other things), and that a good thief is near unkillable? Because, call me crazy, but regardless of whether or not you judge people to be hateful of thieves or not, you still actually have to address the class itself, not people and there supposed opinions.

Just to make it real simple for you, you don’t dismiss arguments based on the people making them, you have to address the argument itself. But if attacking people is more your thing well, good luck with that.

Stealth is only great against people who can’t think under pressure. Evades are decent if constantly applied but things still get through and can still kill the thief.

And part of the reason why this class is where it is today is because anet listened to people like you who willingly have no consideration for the other side’s issues. It’s really convenient that you mention attacking because your first comment:

was a nice little bit of nonconstructive sarcasm towards the whole thread.

Well you tried to address the issue but couldn’t help but taking another personal shot at me. That’s fine, I can take it.

Your last sentence at least makes a claim about my quote and you add your personal opinion that it was “nonconstructive”. You’re welcome to your personal opinion, of course, but don’t think everyone’s just going to take your feelings as objectivity. Was I implying sarcasm? Sure, a little bit. The point, though, was to highlight the absurdity of the OP’s request with hyperbole. No, thief shouldn’t have medium health anymore than they should have heavy armor, or death shroud. I’m sure almost everyone else who came along and read that understood the subtleties of that constructive, albiet rhetorical argument right away. Just because you didn’t appreciate it doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a place right where it is.

Besides not being able to think under pressure when dealing with (anything in PvP) a thief, the thing that amazes me the most about the people that come here specifically to complain (check the nerf wish list (filter out the jokes, and look at the ones that are “originally by”)), is that instead of dealing with the issue themselves (ei. struggling and finding a way to do something about it (hmmm…)) they instead build up rage and hatred which gets them absolutely nowhere. Though I haven’t seen a case where the QQ’er complained twice or more (aside from obvious trolls, like our long beloved and missed BurnFall), so i presume they pulled their snot in, wiped the tears and persisted, which is a good thing for them since that means they did actually go somewhere after QQ’ing on the forums.

Those are generally the kind of people that come here to complain… hopefully, it’s not insulting enough to get infracted for, but yeah.

Weirdly enough those kind of people still come out on top since if they do manage to persist, they improve, and if they persist long enough (till the next patch) ANet will nerf the thief a bit more (almost guaranteed – no it’s not a cry for “buff us please”, I personally would love a complete overhaul of thief as opposed to small tweaks (nerfs/buffs)) . It might not be what they have hoped for though, since ANet has it’s own agenda for “balance”, we can’t really do anything about that.

But yeah lol medium health pool, heavy armor, and death shroud does seem a bit of an overkill.

Tired of builds

So the weapons sets (basically “builds” since your skills are primarily from weapons (my beef)) are, correct me if i’m wrong:

D/P -> power
D/D -> power > hybrid-ish (So typically it’s power, though i think it can be ran as a hybrid)
S/D -> power
S/P -> power
P/D -> condi > hybrid-ish
P/P -> power > hybrid-ish
SB -> condi/power (Um… it’s a SB, it’s troll enough as it is spamming 3 (the one that evades and leaps back), people will be just running in waves to these forums to QQ)

And then you can kitten around with the traits to enhance whichever set you choose, and compliment it with appropriate utility skills.

You could always try P/D as power, or like P/P as condition… or hybrid some other set…

(man i wish we could choose which skills we use in each slot for each weapon and the 3rd skill (mix of weapons))

You can do everything with heroes, especially now that you can have a full party of them.
Back before they implemented a full hero party you could still do you+6 heroes (you had to ask someone to go in with you and bring their 3 heroes, and then they could leave, but their heroes will stay with you) to clear fow (that’s how i got my obsidian armor) and uw on HM, though it will take a bit of time.

I found that doing UW with hero’s was quite hard. Having to micro manage them for some of the encounters. You can’t do the deep or Urzogs unless they’ve changed how you enter the Deep, and I think there are parts of Urzogs where you have to split up. I can’t really remember, never did finish Urzogs.

Yeah I think for Urzogs you might not be able to do it, unless there’s a way around the split-up. Deep I’m not 100% sure whether you can or can’t. I think those are the only two case though.

SAB-way I think it was called, did a good job with with FoW. I was also an A/X, using Pain Inverter and Assassin’s Promise – like I would call/ping a target as i cast AP and PI on it to hex it, and then the heroes (plus the target it self) would shred it.
