Because it is better then the alternative of what we had in beta. Or the market crashing becoming flooded. This is also a value they can adjust if they feel dyes are becoming too costly.

guesting won’t help you get into another instance.

This is incorrect as it is one of the criteria of determining the shard to put you on.

Asura Animations & Visual Effects are Broken

in PvP

Posted by: anzenketh.3759

anzenketh.3759

this is ridiculous I have always relied on the animations… this also might explain why with my massive norn ele, I don’t always hit foes even though they appear to by in the animation.

The hitbox is the same so that is not the case if anything it looks like you are not hitting anything when you fight a asura but you are doing damage. If anything I would blame that on lag. You may want to test it out on the Norn the same way the OP did however.

The main problem that is being brought to attention is avoiding damage. If the AOE circles were the right size relevant to the actual range then this would not be so big of a problem. However according to this post not even the AOE circles show correctly.

I don’t think for most animation effects normalizing them would be that big of a issue visually. The only problem I see is with malie.

I was out running the world bosses the other day. I ported into Cloven Hoof waypoint close to the time that the boss started. I got the message that you used to get. “This waypoint is now contested we are redirecting you to another waypoint.”

I thought that was interesting as I thought all waypoints were supposed to show contested. Then I thought of a possible solution. Show the maps contested once during a 24 hour period(Between resets). Then monitor the shard that that player was on and show the waypoint status of that shard as it is highly likely that if the shard is still open that player should land on that shard.

If the player does not for some odd reason land on that shard give the waypoint contested message and redirect the player.

Dragonite became a grind

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: anzenketh.3759

I’m new on this forum, so dont flame on me if this topic was already created.

I’m a casual gamer, so in the week i play around 1-2h/day, in the weekends a little more. Before the megaserver update, dragonite was already harder to get then empyreal fragments en bloodstone dust.
But it simply became a pain to gather now, i’m camping temple maps in the hope one activates, and using the boss timer for world bosses. But earning 10-20 dragonite in an hour aint fun anymore. I wanna start crafting asc armor, but i dont wanna camp boss locations for 15 min, then kill it, and wait again for one to spawn…

Whats the best way to gain dragonite now? Ankittenhe only one that thinks this way?

What’s “hard to get” is based on playstyle. You find it hard to get Dragonite — I’m swimming in it, but always short on Empyreal fragments.

I wish Anet would provide Magic Forge recipes to do conversions on ascended mats.

That would be nice. I am sure a lot of people would like to make more use of their Bloodstone Brick

About Commanders Tags

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: anzenketh.3759

anzenketh.3759

It’d be Commander Loki Karaoke and almost certainly because I’m running Guild Missions.

There have been many suggestions for this (and Anet has shown some interest) including 1) changing colors or shape or 2) allowing guild-only tag visibility.

I expect there to be Commander tag features added in the next feature patch later this year based on the interest shown by Anet plus lots of speculation on my part.

My bad

That’s cool! I think a guild only option would be nice also, though as an option for sure.

Do you have a link to anything that shows Anet’s interest?

Thanks dkspins.4670 for the info.
I hope Anet considers changing it to account bound. Since raising 100g is not an “easy” task, and they did say they want all our achievements to be able to be shared amongst all characters. Personally I consider earning 100g an achievement worthy of sharing across all my characters.

While I for one would like commander tags to be account bound.

The problem is that you would have more of exactly what the OP is upset about. More tags being useless. The overall playerbase wants less not more commander tags. The interesting thing is that there are actually more tags then people see I would wager that the majority of tag holders do not tag often.

ArenaNet has already made changes to require Badges of Honor to buy the commander tag.

Tarnished Coast Question

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: anzenketh.3759

anzenketh.3759

Its not true. With megaservers, TC doesn’t exist except in wvw. If you try to RP with anyone trolls will come to you in an instant and try to stop you and your friends. The mega sever separates everyone, and its impossible to get on the same map as your fellow RPers.

This. TC and all other servers (outside of WvW) have ceased to exist except in name.

That’s only remotely true. 90% of the time, I see the same names in /map and /local chat since DR changed to mega server. I see more RPers now outside Salma gate than I did pre-patch. The only places that I regularly don’t see TCers is in places that used to have no one: Mount Maelstrom, Snowden Drifts, etc.

I wouldn’t say that Megaserger has had no impact on RPing or on Coasters building a community, but it’s relatively minor in my experience. The community is still (mostly) fantastic (we do have our trolls and disgruntled players, but much fewer than when I’m guesting to other servers, even post patch).

tl;dr if you are just starting the game, I would strongly recommend signing up for TC as your home world, and especially recommend it if you RP.

Oh no, I’m an old vet, starting back during the very first day of launch. Was a native to Yak’s bend for two weeks before permenantly switching to Tarnished Coast.

Hopefully I can find a good community, looking into starting anew, retiring my Norn to make an Asura Engineer with my fiancé (also a bit of an RPer.) I’ve got plenty enough RP experience in my years to start up a guild if I have to.

Edit: So wait, I remember homeworlds and stuff back when I started, are they still here and its just an option to join the Megaserver?

Homeworlds do still play a part in what shard you get placed in. They 100% determine where you play WvW.

Some reading to understand how the MegaServers are designed to work.:
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/introducing-the-megaserver-system/
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/the-megaserver-system-world-bosses-and-events/
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/the-megaserver-system-guilds-and-the-future/
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/the-megaserver-rollout-is-complete-2/

When reading please pay special attention to words in the post that indicate probability so you don’t get your hopes up too much. They key part is as follows:

With the megaserver system, players won’t be separated into different copies of the same map based on the world they selected on character creation. Instead, you will simply arrive in a map and be assigned to the version of that map that makes the most sense for you as selected by the megaserver system we’ve developed. This new system takes your party, guild, language, home world, and other factors into account to match you to a version of the map you’re entering. This will increase the odds that you’ll see the same people more often and play with people of similar interests.
With megaserver technology, there are as many copies of a map as are needed to comfortably hold the population of players in that map at a given time. Rather than having a separate map copy for each home world and artificially limiting the amount of fellow adventurers you see, the megaserver system brings players together and dynamically opens up new map copies as necessary.

Also please be aware that it is a fairly new system and may require some tweaking and learning as things move along.

1) guild missions should be instanced so as to not waste mine and all my guildies time waiting for X guilds to finish.

While I understand your frustration that you choose to wait. That was actually a design decision for smaller guilds. My guild would not have been able to finish the Guild Puzzle the other day if it were not for us piggybacking on another guild.

My guild has helped others (smaller) guilds to complete their challenge also, but as it doesn’t give credit (this one didn’t) to the helping guild, it needed to be done again by us in order to complete it thus taking twice as long; they left when done theirs. If both guilds got credit for the initial encounter then I would be all for it, but I believe an instanced version would be preferable. As there are no clear guidelines as to what does and doesn’t give credit for helping, if they will not instance it, they need to give all guild participants credit IMO..

In order for it to give credit for both they must accept the credit and also the event must be queued in their guild panel.

Also as a general rule always ask first.

oh and btw….DO NOT say they arnt useless bcuz they let u repair ur armor from anywehere…..we already have that it is called *open wvw tab ->go to any map ->repair -> go back)

It still may be useful in FotM.

As someone who is working on Ascended Armor and weapons I would love the ablity to buy them off you. However….. them not being freely available is keeping a lot of Tier 6 and exotic armor in check on the trading post.

If these items are clogging up your bank space you can try to forge them(I wonder what you would get). Or you could craft them all into Vision Crystals and vendor the Crystal. Or you can destroy them.

Although personally I don’t see what the big deal is I highly doubt anyone has collected more then 25000 Pile of Bloodstone Dust. Because that is the amount you would have to have to cap the 250 capacity in your crafting material slot for Bloodstone Brick.

For those calling for a merge instead of MegaServers that would not solve the problem. It would also not be future proofing PvE.

Mergers + fixing the unpopular zones and making them more attractive would.

How would you fix underpopulated zones. It may fix it for a little bit but it is not a permanent solution as soon as more newer areas are released as players would always go for the newest shines.

For those calling for a merge instead of MegaServers that would not solve the problem. It would also not be future proofing PvE. This way they only have to take action once. Not years down the line when the population dies down. There are some maps that did not even have a comfortable population level on the highest populated servers. So transferring to a high population server would not
work to solve that problem. Neither would guesting.

Instead they prematurely rolled it for all Tyria out in less than two weeks, barely giving themselves enough time to collect all the necesary data.

What if they needed to roll it out to all the servers to collect the necessary data to do the proper tweaking. There are a few people on Tarnished Coast saying that Devenity’s Reach is better for them now. That would not have been possible unless they rolled it out to Devenity’s Reach

In other way, you are saying that the only choice for them is either fail to acknowledge they have a problem, or fail to acknowledge they have a problem? Somehow i don’t buy that.

I’m sitting at Vigil looking at a bunch of people I don’t know… just feels kinda empty.

This type of comment has had me perplexed for quite a while. There are likely multiple hundreds of people on every given server. I don’t see how anyone would be able to recognize more then a handful of the population on any one server. I don’t see how any one can make a valid correlation or come to any substantial conclusion based solely on observation. Doing so would be highly susceptible Observation bias.

I understand that it feels that there are a bunch of people you do not know. If the area that you are in was historically a low population that you only saw a handful of people constantly on the server. Of course there is going to be a bunch of people you don’t know. The entire idea was to add more people to low populated areas. If the area you are in was a high populated area see statement above.

“The trouble is not really in being alone, it’s being lonely. One can be lonely in the midst of a crowd, don’t you think?”
? Christine Feehan, Dark Prince

Start talking to those people you don’t know. Perhaps you will make some new friends.

What’s missing is a feeling of camaraderie. I WvW a lot. We used to have people jumping into our cities yelling, “Border Lands are under attack! Need help now!”. We’d rally together and fight off the enemy. That’s gone now.

It used to feel like you were hanging out at a club house or school cafeteria. Now it feels like hanging out at a crowded subway station… I’m not sure if that makes sense to anyone else, but to me, outside of WvW there’s no more feeling of family.

I didn’t know everyone on the server of course. I do know most of the guilds though. Not so much anymore.

I do agree there is much to be desired when talking with your server-mates. That is not necessarily a problem with the mega-server though. That is a problem that could be solved by implementing a map restrained (broadcast the same distance as map chat) home server chat. That would solve multiple problems not only with WvW it would also solve problems with, guild recruitment(currently solved by specifying the server you are recruiting for), and it would also solve issues with the Europe Language issue. Still have map chat for all those on the map itself. But have a additional map chat that is specific to your server.

We may get that someday and I hope we do.

I also like the idea of having one map (Perhaps LA when/if they rebuild it) to stay server specific. I think most servers had at least LA filled to comfortable levels. The downfall to that however is that it would be likely to overflow as it being the only map that is server specific and a lot of people want that environment.

I would say this is a very clear indication that they are still tweaking and working on the system and listening to feedback.
Isn’t that exactly what you have been demanding?

NO, read the post directly prior to yours…

What if they need it to be rolled out everywhere to evaluate and make those fine tune measurement changes to the system to see if additional UI interfaces are even needed.

When was the last time you tried to bring together a large group for a non-World event? You may find less of a problem now then you did before.

But how many more would they have lost due to the wasteland effect and people feeling that no-one is playing the game. There is a reason why I don’t play Guild Wars 1 anylonger.

Alright, now I see a lot of people running around the same map. But why in the name of all which is good I still feel more lonely than ever?
Because I never can know them better. ANet’s vision about that everyone talks to each others, makes new friends easily and are one big happy Overflow is wrong. I chosed smaller server so my laptop can run the game and so I would know people better before anything. I’m really shy and being forced to the middle of unknown people are making me more nervous. It’s not funny to log in game anymore.

Hello!? You can easily move to their own Megaserver with 2 clicks.

Not if both yours and your friend’s megaservers are full.
And moving 2 people might be easy, try 50 that try to do a Guild Mission, or try to organise to kill Tequatl or ANY other group activity. The complaints are far from awful, they are perfectly valid even if you don’t get them.

^ this ^

What is the probability of that happening outside of massive world events. I would wager far less then 5%. So I would argue that it is not something to worry about as the chances of it happening are statistically insignificant. Also any event that large had a high probability of kicking you into overflow anyways.

You’re clearly delusional. Again, wanna get maybe one party worth of people to ‘jump’ to your map. Easy as cake, sure, just like you said. But you wanna get say 100 people from your guild to map jump, it just ain’t gonna happen. Or did you forget everyone plays differently? Just because you’re not in a guild where they may want 50-100 people to all be in the same place at the same time doesn’t mean there aren’t people that do!

Not delusional speaking from my own experience on trying to get with my guild members(given I am working with a lot less players) onto the same map.

You would have had issues trying to get more then 100 players onto one map with the old system too. I still do not think it would cause both shards to be full unless you are trying to do this for a world event during the scheduled time. If that is the case the soft population limit definitely needs to be adjusted. Also when was the last time you have tried. I am sure they made some tweaks recently.

Not the best aim I’ve seen, then. Cursed Shore is rather unplayable on its soft cap.

Note the word trying. There are a bunch of people using the Join in feature or meeting the criteria to override the soft cap. Players don’t always behave the same way as simulations. They need actual players to give the data to make the systems work right.

There is literally no way out of this situation that doesn’t leave them giving up on 100% full maps, though – if they insist on sticking with that, they WILL lose players, and lots of them. Full-er than previously is fine, but on maps that were already often near-full? Ugh.

I absolutely agree the timing of Megaserver was meant to be in the middle of Living World releases to provide a safer way to test it. I do wish we could be providing better feedback than “this game is hell, I’m quitting.”

Feedback like… “I was doing guild missions, we had X people trying to get into Y map, but it took us Z minutes to get everybody together… almost everybody, that is, because Q people never made it in because the map filled up.”

That’s useful feedback for the devs and the kind that I wish more people would give.

I was looking for it in your signature before I asked. Must have missed it somehow. I agree that it is a bit upsetting that players are not giving better feedback. It would also give a better perspective for those viewing the threads. I think they will find a trend that the people that are having the worst problems with the megaserver are those that are on extremely high populated servers. Or those that were on the lowest and choose the lowest because they want to have a lower population.

I love how everybody acts like the overflow system worked perfectly. Do you know how often I was able to play with my full guild for new Living World events on patch day?

Never.

How about my full party?

Occasionally.

How about just my girlfriend?

Usually, but not always.

Very often, by the time we all loaded into a map and tried to join on somebody else, that somebody else’s server would already be full. As would ours. Not soft-capped full. Hard-capped full. (We weren’t guesting.)

To really see if Megaserver works, I want to test it in one of those Living World events because that is where I’ve had absolutely no luck so far. If it works in those situations, I’ll be a happy camper. If not, I’ll be back here talking about fixing or removing it with the rest of you.

Curious what server are you on?

As for your living world comment. I think they are giving themselves time to figure out the MegaServer before they release a Living World event. This is why it is out on all the maps to test it in a environment as close as possible to that as they make adjustments.

Hello!? You can easily move to their own Megaserver with 2 clicks.

Not if both yours and your friend’s megaservers are full.

And currently the Megaserver will make sure the instances are full, before it will start creating new ones.

That is not true. It creates a new one at the soft cap or possibly sometime before that. The problem is the hard cap is easily reached during large events (Large Guild Events, World Bosses etc…)

No i’m on a america server :/ Thx for the answer

If it makes you feel any better, even if he/she was on an American server you wouldn’t be guaranteed the ability to play with them either! Thanks Megaserver we love you! /sarcasm.

Not true. You can always go to the same map then right click on their portrait then click join in if you did not land on the same map. If it states full. The other party member would need to join you.

Immersion vs "It's just a game"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Immersion is good but Immersion can only happen to a specific point on entertainment. Be that a video game, a movie, a book or any story. We know to a point that what we are being immersed in is not real. If we take our own Immersion to extremes however we can start to loose touch with reality. That type of immersion is not capable unless the individual starts some Matrix thought process in my opinion.

As for being offended there are some forms of entertainment that some may think takes things to far. However we each can decide if we want to participate in what offends us or not. There are rating systems(however imperfect) that help us make those decisions. The only thing we hope is that the game stays true to it’s rating or making sure it is not mis-rated.

Something interesting I found posted on Peter Fries twitter related to Immersion in a video game.

Is killing NPCs in videogames immoral? Is my profession enabling mass murder? Should I get a lawyer? http://www.vox.com/2014/4/23/5643418/this-guy-thinks-killing-video-game-characters-is-immoral … (via @voxdotcom)

At what point does something that is not OK or ethically right in the real world become OK in a Video Game? How does one determine that? Is a specific amount of immersion required to not make things ok?

Hello, I have a friend who chooses a European server…
My question is : can I play in one way or another with him or not ? Because I see him in the map (blue dot on the mini-map), but I do not see his character.

If the answer is no, can we do dungeons and fractals together ?

Thank you

Are you also on a European Server? If so yes. If not no you can not play with him in any game mode. He or you would need to transfer and be on the same region.

The other day I was in a group with m friends. Same guild, same server, same group, and we didn’t even appear on the same map ? How ? Why ? Why does anet keeps knocking down their own game ? Finding temples to get dragonite is now absolute hell. You have to keep checking every 15mins if there’s one active. I’m not even gonna talk about how much guild events are kittened up.

Why is it like this ? Is there something I don’t see in this megaserver thing ? Because for now what I see is an absolute fail that led alot of my friends to start thinking about quitting.

Are you aware that if you are in a party that you can right click on your friends portrait and click on Join in.

What server are you on?
What map were you going too?

My Advise on temples is play the other events in the area and keep checking the map to see if the temple is contested.

It served no purpose from a gameplay or roleplaying POV. So they rightfully axed it.

Doesn’t mean they aren’t working on something better though. In it’s current form it was a pointless feature from launch that they could never fit to the way the game was developing.

I would not say it served no purpose it changed your characters stance in the cut-scene.

@SirMoogie
Due to a MMO had many players in it you can not have a long lasting effect to the world.

Why not?

I guess that all depends on your definition of long lasting. Most event chains work on a pendulum. The events in Orr are specifically designed that way. We push to capture a temple. Capture a temple. Defense event starts to have the risen try to take back the temple. It is up to the players to defend it or let it fail. That is not a hard reset.

How many times have you followed a NPC after you completed a dynamic event. Your changes do matter. They determine if specific merchants are available. They determine if while on the shard you can go to a waypoint or not. Most of the world acts like this.

Sadly however the world bosses can not work that way. This is not due to a technical limitation but a community one. Too many players want to fight the world boss. They want to know who what when and where they need to be. They don’t want to miss out on a boss because the map is full. Due to that reason players "don’t want to miss out on a boss because the map is full. " ArenaNet decided to put them on a schedule. They were moving that way anyways due to the overflow system causing the problem of miss out on a boss because the map is full.

Feedback/Questions: MegaServer

I’m afraid that no amount of finetuning and prioritizing can help in the situation of sudden zone population shifts (world boss train, for example). When train arrives to a new zone, there is a limited number of instances available initially (often only one, in otherwise dead zones like Sparkfly). Because server cannot predict how many people will arrive, it will only create new instances after the already existing ones are filled. So, regardless of prioritizing, when a huge wave of players arrive, the server’s choice of where to put any single player is very limited (often, to only one option – the instance that was created last and was not filled yet).
When there’s no possibility of choice, prioritization simply cannot work.

Actually the boss train problem is rather easy to solve for those riding the train. The simple solution is just reserve a spot for them in the next boss event within a small period of time before the event.

The system can also spin up a number of empty instances to allow for proper sorting (perhaps 1-5 less then the number of servers available for that region). Funnel everyone in by server prioritizing Guild and Party. Stop allowing people from the same server in when it reaches medium population limits and only allow party squad and guild groups from that point on.

Guild Missions however is a different story and more complicated.

I don’t think this was a result of trying to prevent players from playing how they want. I think this was to ensure that the economy does not run away with itself. This will allow for a correction in the market.

Due to a MMO had many players in it you can not have a long lasting effect to the world. ArenaNet is trying to do that with the living story. But that can not be done on a individual player level. Something like that must be instanced and in a personal story. Also if I remember right that hero comment was more talking about the Personal Story.

However you can have a effect to the shard you are on until the pendulum reaches it’s peak. Given it is not that big of a effect. I am also upset that they have to get rid of the cross map mechanics. I really enjoyed them in game. However I would rather have that lost then having a empty zone always overrun by risen

As for the world boss pre-events not leading up to the world boss. I agree the pre-events should not spawn until it is close to it’s scheduled time.

I think that the system should try to put you in the same shard that you were last in (and I think it does try to do that). Except it can not do that if the shard is closed. That is just the nature of the way it is. Again I would rather have that feeling lost then having a empty map with no players in it.

From the patch notes.

Boss chests in dungeons are now limited to once a day. Champion loot bags and dungeon tokens from the bosses themselves will not be limited in this way.

Now if that is once per path per character or once per dungeon per character, or once per path per account or once per dungeon per account I am not sure. I can confirm however that if you run another dungeon you still get the chest.

I have a strong suspicion that the game is trying to go into a market correction or trying to offset the savings from no armor repairs.

The manifesto was decimated long ago when they started introducing Living story achievements, which are essentially quest steps that direct you where to go, along with numerous events that had no impact on the world (such as Scarlet’s Invasions). They plunged a stake through its heart with the introduction of boss schedules and megaservers. Now the world really doesn’t care if you are there or not, it operates the same regardless of your actions.

Why do you say that? What would you do to improve the system (no removing MegaServers is not a option).

@Anzenketh

If that’s the case a lot of roleplayers are going to go elsewhere then I guess, if $$$ is all that matters. I don’t really get why something as old EQ2 can handle it but GW2 can’t, even other solutions like tags that’ve existed for 10 kittening years. That would actually prioritize who you bump into not just random, and no, adding EVERY single player and guilding every single player will never happen.

Jesus, whats the point in server community, WvW if we don’t even have a hub to interact not just RP. Seems like a lame cop out.

Who is to say they don’t add a RP flag. After all they did say. Having a RP flag is well within the realm of possibilities. It is not about money it is about having populated maps. Proper resource usage in the cloud is only secondary.

We are currently investigating in detail the Mega Server system in terms of role players. Minor adjustments to the algorithm – especially in cities – have already been made in order not to leave the “home feeling” completely disappear. But even here the work is not yet complete.

But they actually do. Quite simply they need to be included because it does not achieve the main goal to re-distribute server load and fill in the empty zones with players. A lot of cities are empty or extremely low population except for RP players most players only enter cities to craft and do the personal story. They can now use those resources that were allocated for empty and low population maps to more population maps.

Well, I never tought that Lions Arch was empty. So first they get rid of the main-hub to have an excuse to merge all the cities because they are so empty?

If we ever do get Lions Arch back. I would say that is the one map that should be kept server specific. However…. I think that if they get the algorithm right it will basically be just that server anyways. Them destroying LA is unrelated to the MegaServer.

20 days and 15 pages since the last official comment. That’s really depressing. It’d be nice for someone to at least give a token “We’re working on the problem”.

Some very rational solutions have been proposed, many of which seem like they fit right in with the technical concepts of the megaserver.

My Charr warband guild has gained one new member entirely as a result of the megaserver (IE: from another server), which is very cool… and a great example of how it CAN work, with a little fine-tuning.

They did give a official comment. To the people in Europe who are more severely effected by the systems not working.

Here is the relevant translated part for RPers that you may have missed.

See now this is what I don’t understand, mega servers don’t need to be in major cities so disabling them would fix the problem of losing the home community, people can guest if they really want to see idlers from another server or RP. They could add tags for sorting like EQ2 did and that was ten years ago, hgnn.

Saying that, there goes WvW pride.

There are better solutions to keep the communication on server communities with the mega-server. For example map wide home server channels.

I shall copy and paste another quote from the link I gave translated by google translate that gives further information on additional reasons why MegaServers were done.

The infrastructure of Guild Wars 2 is fundamentally different from Guild Wars 1 – also in terms of the hardware. The Mega Server system reduces in any way the existing server hardware through which eliminated some cards (which have gone to zero-load), the server load now shifted to more populated cards. It is not so here at the Hidden attempt to save server costs – which, incidentally, are ranked in the annual budget in the lower percentage.
