Outfits have 4 dye channels and once you buy one it’s unlocked for your account forever. Free to apply and change whenever. They’re great for leveling.

My personal favorites are the chef’s outfit on sylvari and the pirate outfit.

that’s cool! What do you mean buy them? I have earned a bunch of dyes from black lion boxes and ones guildmembers gave me. Do i need to buy outfit dyes from the gem store? from an in game store?

Outfits are bought in the game store. See the following link for your options:

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Outfit

Do be aware unlike armor you can not mix and match. It is that look or nothing. Great for leveling or while saving up for your preferred armor. But you may not want that look forever.

Also be aware some of those may not be available at the moment the witches outfit for example. It may re-appear around Halloween however.

While I do agree that gem store items should be free to transmute like Hall of Monument items.

You can actually get transmutation stones Transmutation Charge easily by just doing map completion. It is a guaranteed reward from completing all of the cities and a likely reward (I would say 70-80% chance from other areas). In addition to that as a veteran player I would not recommend that you transmute anything until you reach level 80. Unless you plan on staying sub 80 for quite a while. You just level up too fast. 80 is not that far away. Cosmetics is part of the endgame in Guild Wars 2.

There are also a costume slot for costumes. However they can not be mixed and matched like the armor is. If you want something different during leveling look at the costumes. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Costume

It is much better now then it used to be. It used to be that if you ever mistakenly salvaged/destroyed the armor or wanted it on a different character you would have to rebuy it. Transmutation Stones the item similar to transmutation charges were also much harder to get previously.

I heared WvW will be removed from map exploration

http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/2v20dl/less_to_explore_in_hot/

Cool. When will PvE be removed from map exploration? I mean I loathe PvE so it would be super sweet if Anet would also cater to me – a WvW/PvP player – for a change.

I think ArenaNet would love to keep map exploration in WvW however It does not work it is too random if you are able to get it or not. The individual player has little to no control over it. The fact that they may be removing WvW from map completion is more of a sign that WvW is not working how they like, and not that they are catering to the PvE players.

Also the ability to craft a pre-cursor is not that they are making it easier. It is that they are removing the randomness of obtaining one (and only one per type per account.) It will still be extremely difficult and take a long time to get a legendary. It is now that a player who has played the game for a year or two may actually have a chance to get one by working for it instead of buying it off the trading post.

Mastery: just a PvE reward track?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

I thought it’ll almost be impossible to complete all of them.

This is the part that has me concerned. I don’t want to have to choose between accessing content A and not working on my legendary for example. This is why it needs to be soft caps or side quests that get locked out.

That is a very interesting point… The fact that you will no long get Skill Points for leveling after 80 will probably make some people not want to buy the expansion for a while.

Except that is not likely how it is going to work. After heart of thorns is released you will get nothing after level 80 if you don’t have the expansion. I don’t think the difference is going to be that big as a lot of people make it out to be.

Skill points will be added as rewards across high-level content to offset this change.

The mastery system will allow you to build out collections that send you on epic journeys across the world of Guild Wars 2. That once completed will reward you with pre-cursor weapons.

Someone else put it best in another thread.

In most MMORPGs, progression is almost over for those who don’t buy the expansion and it will probably be the same here for the most part.

This is not living world season that you are buying if you like the story. This is an expansion that you buy if you want to keep playing GW2 while getting new features and updates.

You can play WoW without any expansion however, doing that will limit you from progression byeond what you got at the start of the game, for the most part. Same thing will aply here I would assume. This is how the MMO industry works.

If you want to progress in Guild Wars 2 you will need to buy the expansion. If you don’t then you don’t need to buy the expansion. This includes progressing your character beyond the point you currently can. This includes progressing in the story beyond the point you currently can.

(maybe a couple extra so people don’t get limited to a set of sources). The real horror would be if we didn’t have enough points for all mastery tracks. Or worse not enough tracks to keep ups going till new ones are added Gasp.

I agree with your concern. Hopefully they do it right so I don’t have to make a gamelong decisions of not being able to get a specific track. In WvW it is ok as I could still play all of the game. In PvE some items sound as they will be unobtainable without some tracks.

Overheard in LA map chat in 10 months when HoT gets released: “Guild recruiting. Heavy WvW guild. HoT owners only*”.

Not likely. My reasoning it did not happen that way in Guild Wars 1. Players in guilds just bowed out of self made guild events that required those areas. They felt left out and bought the other campaigns.

Extremely likely, a lot of dedicated WvW guilds only allow certain classes and builds to join them so it would make sense that some would only allow people with the expansion pack and have the maximum capacity for classes and builds to join.

I have never heard of them. It also sounds like a guild I would not want to join. My comment was not that it would not happened. It was more that it is likely it would not be as rampant as people it sounded. I would venture 5% or less of currently active guilds will actually require the expansion. So if it does happen it is a statistical anomaly and irrelevant.

A question about precursors

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: anzenketh.3759

anzenketh.3759

Or, it could be a single options. Perhaps some of the crafting material for a precurser will be account bound items that can only be found via a scavenger hunt style. So perhaps there will be a collection applied to getting the reward item which is then used as a crafting component for the precurser.

So the “crafting” of precursors do not effect the market. You can only get one precursor via the “crafting” method per precursor per account.

Then the second part of my post applies: let’s hope there is no mathematical advantage from those masteries that are in the “core” game. I don’t want to see a “LF4 Zerkers, 15k AP, 20 Ascalon Mastery points only” because that Ascalon mastery gives +5% damage vs ghosts but is only available in the expansion.

I honestly would not worry about it unless they revamp the dungeon (I don’t think they will do) you can laugh in their faces as the requirement would be completely arbitrary and not needed just as “LFM Zerks, 80 only, 15k AP” for AC path 1 is currently in the game. To be frankly honest you sound like you would not want to play with them anyways it would be a unenjoyable experience for you. It would be best to make your own group. The game currently has high enough population and enough people running the dungeons that don’t care that you will get your group filled up rather fast. Perhaps down the line if population ever becomes a problem the groups created like this would become a problem. Only time will tell.

I understand your concern however. There will be players that will require mastery points regardless if there is a stat increase or not (Don’t ask me why). Because they mistake Mastery points from skill instead of

Mastery: just a PvE reward track?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: anzenketh.3759

anzenketh.3759

I am concerned that the new mastery system is basically a reward track like sPvP for PvE.

That is the impression that everyone is getting so far. Depending on the item you are working for this is actually a good thing in most cases. I think what you are looking for is what is related to the adventures. I too would like some story tightly tied to my rewards. I tend to value those items the most. It is possible that the new pre-cursors will require some of the rewards from the adventures.

Also note the precursor mastery is will only unlock a collection from what the players have gathered so far. You will still need to get all the items for the collection to get the precursor some of those may be specific rewards from specific quests or adventures. Or they may be some items that can only be purchased from specific NPC’s after completing their dynamic event. Then there is the task of getting all the items to craft the legendary from the precursor.

Can you define “WIN” in PvE? Masteries are for PvE content and are only enabled on PvE content. WvW already has Masteries and is going for a revamp to make it more like PvE Masteries but will not require purchasing the expansion.

However to answer your question. You may get some advantage that you would not have otherwise. A lot of the advantages are restricted to the new maps. Some may not but they also may not give a statistical advantage(It may break some older maps). You will also have to “Level Up” in your Mastery Tracks. So even if PvE had a “Win” Masteries do not make the game pay to win. In my mind by your friends definition a level cap increase would be pay to win.

PvP everyone will always be on the same level. So in truth the only competitive mode tests skill and is balanced as such is PvP.

Yet another mastery concern, but.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: anzenketh.3759

I’d hesitate to say anything will count if you get achieves for it. The Emperor achieve says hi! Lots of people have wanted to retroactively get all the cultural armor unlocked since they have the title but deleted the gear pre-Wardrobe, but since you can get the achieve via buying subsets of the available cultural armors the game never tracked which ones you did and did not get.

So probably some things won’t carry over, though most should and world completion definitely should since there is no subset for that beyond having gotten it before some new wp’s and poi’s got added.

Except they confirmed before that patch was released that you had to currently own the items. This is because they did not have a system to track that. So it comes down to anything that is tracked yes you will get it retroactively.

Masteries: Gating content.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: anzenketh.3759

anzenketh.3759

i really DON’T like this idea because all it does is trivialize player skill. wasn’t it you that just a few posts above was saying about how combat should be about player skill, not having the right masteries? how isn’t “now i don’t have to worry about being flanked by mordrem wolves” the exact opposite of that?

rather than something uninteresting like “now i do more damage against X enemy”, i prefer combat masteries to be “enablers”. yeah, hard gates. can’t do this thing until i have that thing. better than “can do this thing, but once i have that thing, it’ll be way easier”.

I like soft gates. The systems to make it easier is there for those that want the easy road. Not there for those that don’t and want the easy road and want more of the challenge. They may make a achievement for you defeating X enemy without the masteries that you would be able to display proudly. After all I think that is what you are really looking for is exclusive content.

both soft and hard gates have advantages and disadvantages. i personally prefer hard gating stuff because it gives more structure, and the designers can focus on the content itself, rather than tweaking things to keep the gated content from being trivialized.

the games cited as the inspiration for the mastery system (zelda and metroid) both rely heavily on hard-gating (sometimes literally) to conduct the player experience, without deterring the feeling of exploration. matter of fact, it strengthens that feeling. “oh, so that’s how i do that thing, using this”. and both games still had soft gates (health and ammo) that can be optionally improved.

personally, i think soft gating in GW2 has the risk of just making fights feel easier than they should after you have the right masteries, simply because said fights would have to be designed with players that don’t have masteries in mind. meanwhile, just saying “nope, can’t do that” until the players have the proper mastery allows the fight to be designed with a single “base model”. there won’t be a range of players, power-wise, to take into account.

as for the achievement, i doubt they’ll do something like that, because i don’t see them allowing you to “turn off” masteries.

My point is that if there are a lot of hard gates I will be forced to progress a specific line to do content (I likely will anyways with a soft gate just because I am not at the top of my game.) With soft gates you can attempt it it may be possible but you will want to pull your hear out afterwords. This will allow someone to still do content. Possibly with help of those that have the line.

For example the difficulty of a mob designed to take advantage of the mastery system could be the equivalent of soloing two champions. It is possible but for the normal player they will take the mastery route so they actually can complete it taking the champion down to two veteran difficulty.

From the looks of it they will be left out of pre-cursor crafting as it requires the masteries system and progression of the masteries system does require Heart of Thorns.

New living world episodes will likely require Heart of Thorns also as they will take place after Heart of Thorns. There is a possibility they may release a few for the core world however.

The new WvW map, PvP stronghold, and Guild halls may still be available to players that do not buy the expansion however. We will have to see.

In the blog post today it talked about getting mastery points that you spend from completing a map. I see a missed opportunity on restricting players the ability to gain more mastery points on alternate characters.

I think it would be a good idea to allow players to re-gain mastery points on alternate characters. This will encourage players to make multiple characters and help keep population on some of the older areas as time goes on.

The only disadvantage I see is loosing the “look at me” factor.

Not true. We have two new full maps(zones). They were just released over time.

I think that ArenaNet will do a new race in the future. However I do not feel it will happen in a expansion but a new campaign. I feel at this time they do not think that the game is ready for this. Perhaps after Heart of Thorns they will. Perhaps the expansion will tell them if splitting the player-base will really happen and if the game can survive with a new campaign.

You’re getting fresh, free stuff every 2-4 weeks and complaining you are getting a stagnate game… so yeah, your demands are pretty ridiculous.

what is fresh in it? I don’t see it I’m sorry, LS isn’t my cup of tea at all. PvE wasnt my cup of tea at all in pretty much all games, but I do enjoy it in guild wars games.
What I need is fresh things like skills, weapons, new combinations, new meta, something that will change the way I’m playing the game. (and the most I want is, breaking the stacking meta)

I don’t get that in LS and PvP is really in bad spot in this game.

If you think a expansion is going to bring that to you be prepared to be disappointed. This type of stuff is released though normal patches as well as expansion packs.

ArenaNet is making Hype. For what we don’t know yet for sure beyond the PAX event.

Players are making predictions based upon information that is given. Players are generating hype based upon the expectations.

Personally I am excited for the possibility of a expansion mostly because it means a lot of new content and a lot of returning players and possibly some new ones. I play a MMO for the social aspect.

Will a be disappointed if it is not a expansion. Yes. Will it ruin my enjoyment of the game forever. No. That is because excitement and disappointment are not the problem it is how you handle the two that is. ArenaNet nor other players can be blamed for that.

[SNIP] We regret that the search engine is not functioning properly right now…

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if the search engine ever worked? If so, when did it stop working? I’m not sure that I recall that it ever worked, but I could be mistaken.

In any case, I’m having a difficult time understanding why exactly the forum search engine would be broken for so long and/or be so difficult to fix. Nearly every forum on the internet has a working search engine; it’s not brand-new cutting-edge technology. Honestly, is ANet doing so poorly financially that it cannot afford to have forum tools that work?

The problem is deep within the technology behind the forum structure itself. Yes, we had a search engine in the beginning, but it was broken by our forum contractor in the course of working on other things. We no longer have a relationship with that contractor or his company, and someone else is not able to step into the system and fix the search engine because (1) our programmers are tasked with other essential work, (2) the forums run on a web framework with which most of our programmers are not familiar and (3) we’re investigating other options for forums and it would not be prudent to pour money into hiring someone to fix this as a short-term solution.

My team agrees that it would be great to share the system that is outlined in the OP, and we’re going to figure out a way to do that. It won’t be as simple as “plumbing” the current search window to go to Google — each of us still will need to input the search manually, but it’s better than the current “poke and prod” to find a particular post!

May I recommend setting up a custom search engine like as follows. So that you don’t have to type in site:forum_address all the time. The following is the link I use.

  • A fix to the story line. I expect this to take some time they may be re-writing some of the story. Voice acting and all may need to happen.

The Precursors are dropping from the ToT Champion Bags that you get from the three bosses in The Labirynth. The regular ToT bags drop no equipment and, therefore, no Precursors. They do, no doubt, have a chance for valuable rare drops though. I was commanding a group two nights ago in which someone looted The Legend after killing the Wizard.

What about this guy?

He got a precursor from a ToT bag. And lots of other people have got one too. Did Anet overlook something?

He likely opened up a large candy bag. Those drop equipment of masterwork rarity and above.

Lets talk about the new Gem conversion [Merged]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I can understands people’s confusion on trading gems for gold. I had to spend a lot of time messing with the numbers to get just the right price for the gems I want. The problem here is that if I am buying gems with gold the minimum denomination is too high. I frequently bought gems with gold when I had a little extra gold around. However I rarely bought them in greater denominations then 100. A lot of people liked the gold to gems conversion because then they could buy the majority of their gems with cash. Then use the conversion system to buy the rest of the amount. This system of buying the rest of the gems that you need with gold negated the “Microsoft Points” feeling of the system.

The system now is now more like the way the Microsoft Points system was in the past. The following is a critical review of the Psychology of the points system.

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/34589/Analysis_The_Psychology_Of_Microsoft_Points.php

I think that a lot of people would be fine with a middle ground of having the minimum number of gems that you can buy with gold be 100. A much better option is add a additional button next to the buy more with cash to allow us to trade a custom amount bringing the page to the old system.

This is not currently an option supported in Guild Wars 2. I am however curious how you would see this functioning. Would it be some sort of keybind toggle, or something else?

Either a keybind option or a setting. Either would work well.

I’m not discounting your other comments, and thanks for them. But I have to quote that bit ^ and respond: Yes, Yes, and Yes again! By all that Dwayna holds holy, I truly wish we could get a functional search engine!

It’s no secret that the forum software has some noticeable issues. We don’t have the ability to fix Search, just as we cannot address a few other things we’d like to tackle. I’m really sorry that it can be difficult to efficiently use the forum. Quite honestly, I’m absolutely delighted when I see someone was able to find links to old threads and provide them in current thread. In fact, I often find myself wondering "How long did it take that poor forum member to find those links? )

This is something we’re looking into, and there may be a couple of ways we can address it, even as we examine both short-term and long-term solutions.

“How long did it take that poor forum member to find those links? )”

We use Google. Or some of us just keep a list of common threads.

1.) Go to google
2.) Type
term site:https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu

Or just setup a Google custom search like I did. Perhaps ArenaNet could replace the search bar with a Google custom search. I don’t know the legal/monetary issues behind it so I can not say. It also won’t search inside of a thread but it returns more valid results then the current search does.

I am still a beginner in development. In a attempt to develop a application that is currently on hold as I am trying to figure out the best way to persist the details of a item into the database. I have decided to use the following wrapper. It is not quite on wiki yet(no write access):

It uses Guzzle to get the requests and I have got a full item database query down less then 5 Minutes.

Forum and Game passwords should be different

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: anzenketh.3759

anzenketh.3759

All forum traffic, including login goes through 128 bit encryption. If you are accessing from a device that is already compromised, you can also expect any accounts accessed from that device to be compromised as well (such as email).

If you can’t keep your devices secure, an additional password for these forums is not going to help. Just the fact that you do not log into a game does not prevent a malicious entity from using your email address and email access to hijack your account without even needing your password.

Sarcasm 128Bit how dare you that is not secure enough anymore you need to move to 256Bit. Sarcasm

There may be a time soon that you want too however I don’t think that time is yet.

For the majority of accounts out there having the ablity to have a seperate username and password for forums and accounts will not increase the security of accounts. Because they will use the same username and password. So from a cost perspective the increased security of having multiple accounts with diffrient passwords may not be justified.

A better thing to put money into is add multi-factor authentication. That way if somone get’s your password then… Well good for them they still can’t log in. Lets hope that you used a diffrient username and password then all the other accounts you have out there. You did didn’t you? Perhaps they should add more ways to get a code for those without a mobile device.

https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/27626157-Mobile-Authentication

To add what Chris said and perhaps add more explanation. If you are connecting to a network that you usually don’t log into you will likely have to access your email to authorize the network in question. There goes your email credentials and you have bigger problems. Your email credentials are more valuable to the person with the keylogger then your game password.

Oh! Understood. I actually wasn’t going off that question. I think that it got brought into the conversation somewhat confused me with the direction Jon was going.

My thought still stands, +1 on alliances visiting/guesting to other guilds hall.

I think it is important not to exclude the guesting functionality of guild halls. It would be nice to invite say someone who wants to be invited to the guild but has not yet to the guild halls.

Maybe its time for an Anet survey ?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: anzenketh.3759

anzenketh.3759

Surveys are hard to do. Extreamly hard!. That said I think that ArenaNet has the resources to write a good one. I also think surveys could provide as a valuable tool. The area that it could get information on is what the playerbase really feels about the

I think a survey would be good to identify the area of the game that should be worked on. It would also be good to identify how well changes were recived. A survey sent out via email and distributed via the various communities Fourms/Reddit/Fan Sites etc. This would help on avoiding selection bias to some degree. This is something these fan made surveys can not preform.

I think after the servery identifies the areas that need focus a CDI should be created and ran to get player feedback on those issues. This would provide the necessary information to improve the system.

The survey could be something as follows:

Place the following playtypes in order of frequently of play.

[] PvE
[] sPvP
[] WvW

Have you tried out XYZ system that was changed.
(Yes)
(No)

Do you feel that XYZ system effects you on the way you play the game.
(Yes)
(No)

On a scale of 1-5 are you satisfied with the way XYZ system was implemented.

The advantage to this survey structure is it removes a lot of bias. It categorizes players based on play-type. If the player has tried said system vs just based upon inaccurate information. If they feel a change effects them. It also provides a scale of satisfaction with the system.

Getting information on what players think needs improvement is much harder. I think that a different system all together should be used for that. A system like getsatisfaction or uservoice works well. The forums can be used in a similar manner however I am unsure on if the +1 button works well as there is no way to flag your idea as a suggestion to be “Voted For”. The not so stellar! search feature is also a problem. I can not easily identify issues that were brought up before. A lot of us have resorted to using Google. I honestly think at this moment that AreanNet should sign up for a Google custom search engine and

Asura gates for new players?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: anzenketh.3759

anzenketh.3759

Hmm… I was planning on buying a new account for myself anyway. I’ll do that tonight, and do a bit of research, then post back.

That would be appreciated.

I can’t tell which gate the experienced player was talking about. This could all simply be a misunderstanding of some sort and maybe the newbie was looking at the gate to the asura personal story (the one that’s right next to the actual gate to Lion’s Arch, or a WvW gate as mentioned already).

Considering that I am getting this story second hand… or third hand, considering that it’s the newbie telling the experienced player relating it to me… I think it’s clear why I’m asking for confirmation.

The wiki page with the level rewards isn’t something I’d seen, but since the wiki is a player-edited source I could easily see it being mistaken if someone used an older account that had the gates unlocked already.

If it is a WvW gate yes that is blocked on trial accounts. If it is any other gate it would be a bug even on trial accounts.

There was a lot of misinformation being spread around about this system.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Misconceptions-regarding-Level-gating/page/4#post4396936

There are a few gates that are also locked out even for level 80’s in Rata Sum. But those gates are locked because they currently lead nowhere.

Devs are pretty scatterbrained when it comes to some fixes, but it can easily get hard to manage all of them. For non-devs, imagine if you had to write a line of documentation every time you fixed a typo at work.

This made me laugh. Sometimes as a dev that is exactly what you have to do. Ugh stupid semicolin.

Tip for the forum readers: Don’t take everything a dev states as something that will happen. In the case above the developer is trying to get ideas on other possible ideas to solve the coverage/population gap issues in WvW.
