1.) Force multiple MegaServer shards for language only.
2.) Create a Home Server Map channel

3.) Give players the choice, which “map/instanced” Version the Player wants to join,
as a drop-down list like:
#0, gendarran field, let the automatic decide (default)
#1 gendarran fields, 100 Players, language english
#2 gendarran fields, full
#3 gendarran fields, 10 Players, language german

etc…

I was told the “district” System of GW1 worked like this.

Greetings.

The ArenaNet Developers have already commented that at the moment this is not possible. My suggestions were items that they could implement now with the least amount of extra work.

I would like really enjoy having districts like in Guild Wars 1.

I think one thing that they should do if they can never give districts is make the Join in feature work in more places then just the party menu for large groups getting on the same map. For example add the Join in on the Guild Menu and display that option only if another Guild Member is on that map.

It does not look like being in a party overrides the soft cap. I think that it should until the hard cap is reached.

Using a language that isn’t understood by all people around you is mostly considered impolite.

……

But let’s say that bar had its “spanish evening” today, where all the spanish folks living in the city gather up to chat in their mother tongue. Would you expect from them to switch to english, too? Especially if your group is the minority? What if suddenly a large group of guys comes in, who speak nothing but english?

As made up that last paragraph sounds, that’s the experience I currently have with megaservers. It’s neither impoliteness nor arrogance that causes all these problems, it’s the constant change of the environment that causes confusion and frustration.

What happens if it is a mixture of both and you have no idea who is in the majority. Should you not speak in reference to your audience. If your audience is both languages should you not get a interpreter. However I understand that it may not be optimal. For that reason I am glad ArenaNet is looking for a solution to the problem.

It is funny to me reading that when somebody talks in a language that you don’t understand, it bothers you… XD. Man, you should learn another languages, not complain about that you don’t understand them.

Do you know that the language more used in the world is chinese, followed by spanish and english is just the 3rd one?

…….

I understand why English people don’t bother to learn something outside of English: they don’t need it, because the rest of the world knows that language (it is pretty easy to learn).
But we live in a global world…
In any case, don’t believe that English is a common language in the world… it is just the easiest to learn, and a guarantee that you will be able to communicate with others, if you don’t know their language.

….

Said all that, I think my point is clear: Megaserver wont be a mayor issue. in overflows people speak English if they want to be understood by anyone, and in Megaservers i think it will be exactly the same.

If your post is directed at me. I said it did(past tense) bother me. I don’t feel it does anymore for reasons stated in my first post. If it does it is mostly due to it is something unusual. It is possible as more Spanish speakers immigrate to our country that America will start making it a requirement to learn another language. It is also possible that America may in time get a official language and it will likely be English. They currently do not. It sounds like in Europe another language is learned more as a requirement due to culture and business reasons. In America there is no such need.

Currently in most Schools in America learning a language is treated as a Art form. I actually do plan to learn another language eventually. Not necessarily out of any requirement of understanding but more for broadening my horizons and understanding one’s culture.

I would however argue that English is not the most easy to learn. It is actually one of the most complex languages to speak and write properly. We break our rules all the time. Not to mention the multiple meanings for one word. The only reason why it feels easy is you have plenty of people to practice with. People who speak English are ok most of the time with the blatant disregard of proper grammar in a casual setting. I do however feel that English is the common language of the Internet. However I do not feel it should be required. I feel the language spoken should be determined based upon the audience.

It looks like the system takes into account things in the following order. I have only done a basic test so this may not be how things are.:

1.) Party
2.) Server (If Guesting Guesting Server)
3.) Guild (Representing have not tested not representing)
4.) Other

I thought the order would have been
1.) Party
2.) Guild
3.) Server
4.) Other

I have tested in Rata Sum with a member of my guild staying in Rata Sum. I have been put on the correct shard every time before that with this same guild member. However when I guested on Tarnished Coast I was put on a separate shard then my guild member.

I wish we knew the order so we can more accurately tell the system what we want to be sorted as.

I also thing that block should prevent emote text.

An official answer has been posted in the german “Megaservers feedback” thread:

(Translation)
Good evening.

I wanted to let you know that we are working on a solution for the “language problem”.

https://forum-de.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Megaserver-System-Die-Konsequenzen/page/6#post372722

French version (less hopefull…)

Hello everyone,

Know that we are listening to your feedback and are already working on some ideas to try to improve the situation for Francophone players (but also German and Spanish). We do not know if and when these changes can be made but wanted to give you this feedback on topic.

Thank you for your understanding!

https://forum-fr.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/game/Megaserveur-et-de-ses-cons-quences-sujets-fusionn-s/page/2#post205202

I wonder what their solution for this would be. I could see a few possible solutions:

1.) Force multiple MegaServer shards for language only.

PRO:
Easy and fast to implement.

CON:
I don’t think this is a good solution though as you run into the same problem of empty maps.

2.) Create a Home Server Map channel(Might implement a /say version too while they are at it for the RP community) . This channel would have the range of the map and only be sent to people on your home server that are on the map in question. This could even be non-shard specific so if you want to party up with someone that somehow did not get sorted correctly that is still on your home server you can.

Pro:
Fixes a few other issues too.

  • Gives back a lot of the server community feeling in PvE without draining the map of bodies.
  • Communication for WvW outside of WvW is still possible.
  • Guild Recruiting for a specific server possible.

Cons:
Length of time to implement is much larger.

Logged in to see how exactly it goes. Harathi hinterlands, my favorite meta-chain event. All waypoints contested, of course, Megaserver infection detected. So i WPed to Seraphs Landing. Turns out the event chain was in progress, attacking Kingsgate. Port to Cloven hoof WP, get into the fight. Fights turned boring with 40+ people being there. No challange whatsoever. Centaurs of course fail to defend. We move down back to the clearing. Nothing. Oh, thats right, Megaservers. Scheduled appearence. Ulgoth cant be bothered. So the glorious assault that the meta event chain once was culminated in a lot of “screw this” and the disgruntled heroes dispersed.

This was my last drop. I said that i wont leave the game for good for a week, waiting and hoping that Anet sees reason and at least admits in that time that this was a mistake on many levels. I will keep my word to myself. But i wont have to log in to this kitten while i wait.

Have fun pulling all the remaining players into one megaserver Anet. You will certainly need this system after so many players leave because of it.

I am confused are you unhappy that there were other players doing the event. Or were you unhappy that the players did not finish the event?

And your proof that this will happen? Oh wait, there is none. Nice try tho.

Another problem with this babylonian language mess is organising events like Teq or 3H-Wurm.
If your event zerg is split into 4 main fractions (english, french, german, spanish – all of these used to have their own servers) where a lot of people do not understand what the other 3 are saying, the event is destined to fail. And then the blaming and hate starts. This already used to happen a lot on the overflows for the living story events like scarlet’s marionette, now this is the standard game mode on the main maps.

Also don’t forget that there is a game mode called WvW that is a source of rivalry between servers that naturally carries over into PvE.
It’s like expecting fans of Real, PSG, Bayern and ManU to support a mixed european football team. Not going to happen.

Are there not other ways or tools to communicate though. If I am talking to someone who does not know English well I use my body language. Or get a translator.

Could I not do the equivalent of Body language using the Waypoint marker system. I would also not be surprised that there are people on the map willing or at least able to translate.

Reminder: This thread is not to give feedback for the MegaServer System the correct thread for that is https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Game-Updates-Guild-World-Events-Megaservers-WvW/

The purpose of this thread is for understanding reactions and the correct way to respond in accordance with culture when confronted with Non-English speech and ways to deal with it.

Should not what language you use be determinant on your audience and what you speak?

Why should we have to pay for a trait simply because it’s tied to an event that may never happen again?

There is currently no living story going on due to this everyone is at the area that they feel is best designed for what they are playing at the moment that is orr. As soon as there is another living story the event will fail. Eventually. Then you can take your friends and go do it with others that are planning on doing it at that time. Or you can play the area until the event fails and starts again.

If you can’t wait that long then you can pay.

I would like to chime in and say MegaServers should be turned off for Malchor’s Leap and kept off in Cursed Shore until the temple events are adjusted; so that capturing traits is actually fun and not a painfully slow wait. I just spent 15 minutes trying to jump between worlds trying to find an uncontested temple / trait-boss via guesting (I was unsuccessful, found out Malchor’s had been megaservered); someone in map chat said they had spent 1.5 hours and still hadn’t found one. Keeping it turned on for Malchor’s Leap could also lead to trolling / hostility if folks attempt to complete the temple defense events.

In general though, those traits needs to be moved to events that occur on a more frequent basis. Getting potentially one shot at Karka per day if you happen to be there for that 10 minute window, waiting around for hours for Lyssa and Grenth temples to become uncontested, Gates of Arah escort scaling issues, hoping (likely to become hostile) people don’t do the temple defense events, none of those things are fun game experiences.

Otherwise, I like the system.

You could also buy the trait in the Heart of the Mists.

I see it on a daily basis in map chat and still see those same hatemongers spewing their bigotry, so, I agree there is zero accountability against those spewing said infractions by those in charge.

Keep in mind ArenaNet has to review each report by hand. Just because you don’t see the effects does not mean that it is happening does not mean it is not. They may also not be doing anything at the moment so they can implement a solution to filter out the supported languages.

Side note I think discrimination not bigotry is the better word to be used. As it is attacking someone based on ones race instead of own’s own opinions or values.

anzenketh.3759

This is not a topic of MegaServer feedback. I have already given my feedback on this topic in relation to Map chat in the appropriate thread. It is related to MegaServers however and this topic is designed more for a discussion. Also because I am curious about other cultures. I am a American so I have no idea what the culture is in Europe. I am also not multi-Langual.

I have read a lot about the problems happening with the MegaServer in relation to the non-English Home servers. I am genuinely curious now.

I am wondering if there is some sort of manner rule in Europe that in multi-language countries that a common language like English be defaulted to when speaking in public. Reason why I ask is multiple things that I have read gave me the impression that there is. If you say there is how did you come to the conclusion that was the case?

I know in America Spanish and other languages are spoken quite frequently especially in some areas. It does annoy some people it often used to annoy me. But there is no courtesy rule in regards to manners to only speak English in public. So the people that get annoyed listening to another language not knowing what they are saying generally have to just ignore it. I do and it used to bother me but does not anymore because I realized if you don’t understand the conversation you were not the intended recipient of the conversation anyways.

If there is a common courtesy rule for speaking a common language in public should that same common courtesy be followed in map chat on the MegaServer maps? If not why?

People in the community should not do this.

This should not be happening. Anyone that does this is in breach of the Code of Conduct.

Sad to say it but when you are on a MegaServer map you are not on your server you are on the MegaServer. They should not be yelling at you for speaking German nor should you be yelling at them for speaking English.

If you understand how the system works and understand the population you will understand that it can and does happen. It may happen quite frequently on Low population maps. What maps are you on that is having this problem?

Some improvements I thing should be made to the MegaServer system.

*Possible solution for communication issues: *

1.) As the server we chose is used to filter the language choice for EU why not have a Map Home Server chat to where people on your server can use Map Chat. This would solve the “Players spamming other languages issue.” It also adds back the community for the server in PvE.

Possible solution for grouping issues:

The Algorithm may need to be adjusted. Particularly in regards to player limits. I would purpose some rules like the following.

1.) First look for any shard open where the players party/squad is on the map. If so place the player there. If not go to next step. This overrides all other choices and overrides the lower, medium, and higher population limits rule to allow large groups to enter. Basically the only rule that should prevent a player from being on the same map as a party/squad is the map shard is full.
2.) Is there any shard where the players guild is already there. If so add a score to that map +1 for each map. This rule overrides the lower population limits rule to allow large groups to enter.
3.) Is there any shard to where there are other members of the players home server? If the player is guesting give higher weight to the guesting server then the home server. This rule overrides the lower population limit rule but does not override the Medium population limit allowing room for 1 and 2 to be fulfilled.
4.) If 1,2,3 do not apply. Preform other magic metrics to determine a map where a player is most likely to meet another player. This metric does not place a player on the map if a lower population limit was not meet.

If there are not low, medium, high limits and does not spawn new shares based on those limits larger groups will cause system problems with meeting together.

This sounds so amusingly ignorant. xD
Everything’s perfect, it works as intended! laughs

So these 10 pages do not exist? (And all the other threads, too?)
Are we all wrong?
Are the mixed up languages only an illusion, created by our evil minds that just NEED a reason to whine?
Are we only to blind to see our Guildies, Friends and Group-Members? Our homeworld people?

Seriousely… If that wasn’t that sad I could lol really hard.

Actually it is only 3 pages the reset of these pages are before the patch went live. Of those three pages only a small portion of them are people actually reporting a issue.

Not at all saying the system is perfect. Not saying it does not mess up. Not saying there are not problems. I also don’t have ArenaNet’s data that shows it is working within acceptable limits. The only anecdotal evidence I have is to compare the number of posts of party issue posts in beta(when there was no join in feature) to now. I would say the system a lot of the times is actually doing it’s job and they are not putting a spin on it. There data is giving them the green light.

I hope the community learns that RP players exist and ignore them if they don’t want to participate and let them have their fun. Treat them as just part of the environment.

They never said that. They actually said the opposite that Orr will be eventually part of the megaservers and the cross map mechanics will not work as originally programmed.

It wouldn’t solve anything. They also wouldn’t have to enforce any set of new rules. Please just read what the people in this thread actually want, man.

The only thing that they’d need to do is keep the megaserver away from the big cities. That’s it. Nobody is asking for special treatment, own servers or rules.

I do not understand role playing thus me asking. May I ask why it would not solve anything.

I understand what they want. A lot of people complained about the cities feeling empty so this was ArenaNet’s solution.

While I will never understand roleplaying/roleplayers, I can see this as a problem. Maybe it might be best if you guys have a separated chat speak just for role players? That way they can filter out all of the world chat and only focus on what they want to see. Seems like a simple fix (I think…)~

That is a really good idea. However….. there are problems with adding features in for role players as RP has some rules that they themselves can not agree on and ArenaNet would be asked to enforce them.

EDIT: added additional stuff.

ANet could say:

We have added an additional chat channel called Role play. It can be accessed by typing /r in the chat or selecting it from the menu.

While we understand that role play does have its own rules, we are not your enforcers. Please do not report people for breaking the rules of the role play unless they are breaking the TOS at the same time.

I honestly think that is the best idea for solving two issues. Except I think they should add two other channels one that has the same reach as map. One that has the same reach as say. Implement it with the intent to clean up the Multi-Language map issue. The roleplayers then could use this channel for their roleplay.

Snip

Yeah, but why this solution in particular?

And is it in the cities too? After they said they would not do the cities in the beginning!?
Edit: Ah no, after rereading the quotes, they never said they would leave cities alone. It sounded implied (I have the quotes), but of course, it wasn’t.

Simply because if they did true underflows it would split the player-base further. The system is designed to act like a underflow. However… It sounds like it may be having issues I am sure they will fix those. Some tweaking of limits may be in order to allow for Guilds not to be split at minimum.

I think the community also needs to be more tolerant of each other on that regard. There should be no flaming of “Wrong Language”.

This.Will.Not.Work. It has never, does not now and will never. That’s just how people are. I am native german, have worked in a UK company in the UK, I can understand and talk dutch as well, but I have chosen a german server for a reason. I wanted to have the comfort of “being at home” when playing this game in the evening after a days work. A lot of ppl I know share this feeling. They will not feel at home any more if this stays as it is.

This will break the game in Europe.

I don’t disagree with you there. Will is break the game in Europe? I don’t necessarily think so. I think it will drive away a lot of non-English speakers however and break the game for them. So the question is do you think the majority of non-English as primary speakers would like to have the way the system was before with empty maps, or share the map with English speakers and have a Non-English chat channel to where you can speak your language freely. Without worry of ridicule.

In all seriousness, why was this necessary again? And have you thought up a solution to these problems yet (Many people have been posting about it since you announced this):

The following has your answer.

Basically to solve the issue with areas feeling like a wasteland. This also allows ArenaNet to create new permanent maps without worry of spreading the playerbase too thin. It also has a plus effect of saving ArenaNet and NCSoft money however I don’t believe that is the main reason why they did it.

While I will never understand roleplaying/roleplayers, I can see this as a problem. Maybe it might be best if you guys have a separated chat speak just for role players? That way they can filter out all of the world chat and only focus on what they want to see. Seems like a simple fix (I think…)~

If you want to know if you are on a MegaServer map highlight your name in in the Guild Panel. If your server name is next to the map name, you are not on a MegaServer map. If it shows nothing you are on one.

Be aware that it is possible that you may actually be in a overflow when I checked a bunch of maps last night Cursed Shore was not on the list. However I am reading that it may be now.

also 2 languages dosn’t work at one mapchat, in the history you can see it at overflow servers … too much flame because of the “wrong” language … and at the end all speak english or remain silent …

I think that part of the problem is the players don’t know what maps are Megaserver and what maps are not. So they are assuming that they are speaking the wrong language when in fact they are not. (Hint if you highlight your name in the Guild Panel and it does not say a server next to the map you are on you are on a MegaServer.)

I think the community also needs to be more tolerant of each other on that regard. There should be no flaming of “Wrong Language”. I say that as a English only speaking individual. I honestly don’t think that separating the languages to the point of not including English with non-English is good for the game. They need the megaserver system so that they can do what everyone is asking for. New permanent areas. If they don’t they will be forever worried about spreading the playerbase too thin. There should be enough population to put in a restriction on non-English languages players should not be put on a map with each other.

What it comes down too at the moment is the system is not doing what it was designed to do. ArenaNet I am sure now has this data and is not moving forward with any other maps at the moment. They may even roll some back (mainly cities as that seems to be the most effected).

I think if ArenaNet explained why they are doing the MegaServer a lot less people would be angry about it. They did not explain the why vary well in the blog post.

I can understand the frustration with the players of different languages being thrown together with other languages they do not understand.

Would those on the other language servers be OK with their Home Server language and English but not with the other languages?

Reason why I am and thinking separate the non-English languages and mix English and non-English is there is a much higher Probability that someone reads/writes a non-English language and English then two non-English languages.

I do not find the selection of daily’s useful for new MMO players. New MMO players are not easily able to do WvW or PvP. Also for the sPvP players there is not that many dailies available for them.

Please increase the options available on the dailies.

They thought of this but decided it would be too jarring and weird. Contested waypoints are in there for gameplay reasons so removing them is not really a option. They thought of that too however it would put players in areas that they really should not be until a event is completed.

Please explain to me what your process would be for proving your theories if you had the data.

I do believe that there is a wealth gap but the wealth gap is explainable. I do not believe it is from people trading on the trading post. If I were to look for the effects of disproportionate wealth I would look at the following data points.

1.) Number of Legendary’s or High Value items that a account has in the top few percent of wealth(amount of gold) vs those of the bottom percentile.

I suspect that the people in the higher percentile of wealth don’t have the High Value items that everyone is going after. I say this because I think that those who have wealth typically are the savers not the people that go after shines.

B) Playtime vs Net Value of account.

I suspect those accounts of high Net Value also have high playtime then those of low Net Value.

C) I would also look at the number of trades of the top percentile vs that of the lower percentile.

I think that I would find that high volume of trades actually decreases income in most cases not increases it. So the people with the high amount of gold would actually not necessarily be those that have the most trades on a account. I think this is due to the Guild Wars 2 market is mostly a speculative market. Buy and hold is typically better then Buy Low Sell High. The exception is those that know a LOT about what is happening and are good at making educated guesses.

Will guild limit ever be raised above five?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

The reason behind multiple guilds is so that players can join multiple guilds of multiple playstyles.

I am in one Server Guild (No-one reps they just use it for the bank vault in WvW)

I am in my main Guild(it is a Small Guild), I have my personal Storage Guild(May be deleting it after the update). I am also in two large guilds. I think the limit to 5 is reasonable. I would not mind it being increased but do not think that it should be decreased as there are valid reasons to be in two guilds. For example: 1 small guild with a group of friends. 1 large guild that you have not quite got entrenched into.

The game is called Guild Wars 2...

It’s quite normal that people expect GvG in GW2 considering there was GvG in GW1.

“Lore reason” doesn’t cut it. It’s not a argument at all, it’s an excuse.

It is not a argument against GvG. I am sure that a lot of players that state the name of the game is Guild Wars for lore reasons would love to see GvG like Guild Wars 1 in the game. It is just that people come in and say “Why no Guild Wars in a game called Guild Wars” they will get a response “The name Guild Wars comes from lore not from a gamemode”.

Now if they came in and asked “Why is there no Guild Wars in the game?” They will get the response they are really looking for. The answer to that question is ArenaNet does not want to segment the playerbase from WvW and sPvP. WvW population is fine. sPvP however is not. Perhaps if sPvP population picked up and became stable and ArenaNet is convinced that GvG would not segment the playerbase more they will put GvG into the game. Until then I do not see it happening. In the mean time have fun with a Custom Arena 10 v 10 Battle of Kyhlo.

As a side note if they developed Guild Wars 2 GvG like they did GW1 GvG I don’t think that a lot of the playerbase would be happy with the way it is implemented as it would be implemented with sPvP rules. If a player really wants that they can have it already via Custom Arena. If I am not mistaken Custom Arena’s allow 10v10 and add the Battle of Kyhlo you get something of resemblance to the GvG that is in Guild Wars 1 (that is only two teams of 8 ).

[suggestion] greater variety of possible loot

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: anzenketh.3759

anzenketh.3759

Well, I don’t think Anet would ever add gem store items to the loot tables. But, they definitely need to do something to sweeten loot. As is, I tend to mindlessly salvage most drops that I can’t insta-sell on the TP for more than they’re worth. Open inventory, salvage kit, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, deposit collectibles, move on. Getting something else, some kind of variety, some better drop rates for useful items…that’d be nice.

What are you looking for?

Feature pack: why the change of heart?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: anzenketh.3759

anzenketh.3759

Account bound:
They are adding new systems in the future that will provide the character progression.

Mixing PvP and PvE:
PvP did not take off like they hoped it would. They are trying to get more players to play it by getting rid of a big reason why some do not play it. They are not forcing you to play it however. Unless you are going for one of the PvP exclusive skins.

They did not change the core of PvP however. Stats are are still standardized and you still are automatically at level 80.

MegaServer:
People really did not buy server transfers for PvE they bought them for WvW. They need to get rid of the ghosttown feel in a lot of the maps. This was the best way to do it.

Min. 1% price-difference

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: anzenketh.3759

anzenketh.3759

I do not think a minimum price difference should be enforced for the following reasons with my basic understanding of markets. If I am off people who understand the markets better feel free to correct me. I will likely change my stance at that point.:

A large bid-ask spread on high volume items will not allow a item to reach it’s true value(equilibrium) so you will always be over or under paying for the item. Likely loosing coin in the long run. The 1 copper undercut is not felt as much on high volume items due to the volume of trades will frequently not only fill the order of the person that did the undercutting but the person who was undercut.

On less frequently traded item there is currently a larger bid ask spread having the item priced above it’s equilibrium. This premium on price is often earned as the player is taking a higher risk on a less frequently traded item then on a item of high volume.

The one copper undercut is mostly felt here. This is also when people get the most emotional about this type of undercutting. But none the less the player who undercut still took a risk. The funny thing is I highly doubt that on low volume items 1 copper is not going to get his item sold much faster then yours. So this in my opinion is the wrong way to trade. If he wanted his sold faster then yours and take less risk and less reward he should have undercut you more. Also someone else can come around and undercut him. By a lot or just a little. Eventually with enough trades the bid-ask spread would be close enough that people are willing to pay the premium to have it now rather then wait for someone to fulfill the buy order. Thus fulfilling it’s equilibrium with the adjustment to risk. So it is of my opinion that if you keep getting undercut then you guessed wrong on what the value of the item was. You took a risk gamble and loss. You can either cut your losses and pull out adjusting your bid to get the coin now. Or stick to your trade for the long term. Eventually it may be fulfilled.

TL;DR 1c undercutting is the market working as designed. We are not talking about High frequency traders skimming of your earning here. They are players taking risks just like you. Maybe they just don’t know how to correctly trade.

Also:
Enforcing a percentage difference can lead to emotional changes in the traders of the market possibility hurting the market. Reason being is that a enforced minimum difference from the previous bid will create large bid-ask spreads. The bid ask spread is commonly a measurement used by investors in relation to volume and liquidity to determine if a item is over or under valued.
