You can thank matchmaking itself as one of the greatest culprits of this. If PvP was set so that only one of any given class could occupy any given spot on any given team, class-stacking would never be an issue.

And then the players would log into other classes because they can. The player base voted to allow class stacking, so that’s what they will get.

No, they voted to be able to still change class at the start of a match incase they ended up with a silly composition to a good one. ANet never said they would eliminate class stacking if they locked your class when you hit the queue button only that the matchmaker would try not to.

Considering to a matchmaker mesmer, necro, engy, revenant and thief would be a non stacked comp that faces say necro, ele, guard, war and thief another non stacked comp we would all lose from this kind of frustrating matchmaking. It’s very clear the second team would have to play pretty bad to lose that fight and it wouldn’t even be close on similar skill levels of all players by virtue of the first team getting royally shafted by comp.

For me it’s the utter failure of a balance patch to do anything meaningful that made this season not worth it. I mean it didn’t even shake up the meta mostly it changed a lot of PvE/WvW abilities to what they were in PvP from beginning of season 5.

The rewards nerf is an additional kick to the nads too.

wvw aside (yeah ghost thief is dumb but for some reason anet decided to buff it lel), i highly doubt anyone (beside people like OP) would actually bother with this build or try to solo boss for this matter, simply due to time needed for it

Yeah let’s face it to solo the boss like this would take forever however you can get a team of 10 and completely bypass every single mechanic of this fight. You also wouldn’t take 2 hours, probably closer to about 15 minutes.

You might even be able to get slippery slubling this way which would truly trivialise it.

I wonder which other bosses can be cheesed with stealth camping.

Oh noo!!! People are upset that someone has better in game knowledge and skill to Solo a Raid Boss in over 2hrs. Props to the Player. At least he didn’t use an actual exploit like the Ranger that solo’ed Gorseval, where he spawned thousands of Sylvan hounds.

@thrag the Green floor hurts him your can see the health ticking down, but Thief has a trait in a highly underwhelming traitline that heals while in Stealth which slows the damage taken so his heals mean something.

Actually the floor doesn’t hurt him, the way you know this is her be dead after a few seconds on the green floor as it hits way harder than any thief health regeneration. He takes damage from the volatile poison that he drops over the course of the fight.

Even defending ghost thief here, lol it’s very clear this isn’t intended but sure keep pretending permanent stealth isn’t stupid broken.

Well i am done with my placements (solo), ended up in gold (waaaayyy lower than last season). The fun part, every match is just stupidly one sided atm. I ended up on team with the same guy (turned out he was legend last season and placed silver this season O.o, also played solo) like 5 matches in a row and matches went like 500-150ish. Sitting at 80+% win rate after placements (can’t do much about DCs/afkers/4v1 morons etc.) and wondering what i am doing here. I have yet to see a close match. I thought MM and placement were supposed to prevent such scenarios.

What other said is true, as solo you are really playing a lottery game. Still. 4.5 years later.

Yeah actually it’s weird I see a lot of people who placed like top20 getting placed in platinum even thought me and misha ended up legend after placements (higher than we got placed last season since we went 8-2 then) and it’s not like we played any well known highrated players during our placements lol. Really weird, idk if they tweaked how high you should get placed

If it’s the same formula as last season’s placement matches it takes into account your rating from last season. Considering you were both 1 and 2 on the leaderboard at the end and consistently there I would think when combined with you both going 15-0 against people who were probably plat last season resulted in legendary off the bat.

To be honest I would be surprised if you and Misha weren’t legendary off the bat, even more so if you were less than top plat.

As for the others in the top 20, I checked the leaderboard last night and there was a lot of names missing that were in the top 10 last season showing a marked loss of interest at least by a lot of well known high rated players. There’s also other possible factors like DC’s (because we all know how reliable servers are after patches) and that the playerbase has shrunk meaning the pool of good players is shrinking leading to one-sided matches in placements as it has to pool players from gold to run with platinum players.

Just theories, could be wrong but this season seems to be starting with a meh, doesn’t help the balance patch didn’t do much in many players eyes.

My favourite part of that video was calling the mesmer ebola while she’s running an almost permanent stealth build. I know and I agree the mesmer build is very low risk high reward but so was Terri’s.

I quite liked Saku’s videos back when he played but seems he’s left the game too especially the video that mocked the broken stuff you could do with all the HoT creep. Think it’s thief dedication 3.

Yeah, the whole dodging is a finisher for stealth, plus hits for 4k. Seems a bit much. Don’t think warriors “damage at the end of your dodge” trait does 1k

I think it actually does more just no-one picks strength unless being a hipster core war. So much abusable stuff with HoT, makes me wish ANet would remove elite specs as the April fools joke this year, can see everyone crying when they don’t get carried by the insane creep.

Is there really a 5 page thread of a build that does nothing buy annoyance or troll people? Come on there are far greater things in wvw that needs to be looked at and people cry at this. It does nothing game breaking, it can’t do anything apart from kill people with no stun breaks/condi clear. I managed to run away from 2 of them on my power reaper.

Yeah I remember you from GH, not been in a match up vs GH for a long time and roamed tbh. WvW is boring and Drgr/Psy/ERP ganking people all the time make solo roaming boring. Still respect TaG for generally not being kittenholes and always making an effort even if there’s no chance of winning and Salva is probably one of the best thieves on GH.

Who honestly cares?

It’s not one of my usual abrasive comments, I actually mean why care about PvP when it’s so stale, balance has been butchered and is a complete mess. It isn’t that fun anymore especially if you read between the lines of many posters so why continue to play it or care about it?

Nothing changed balance wise so I’m skipping this season, I already found it difficult to get motivated towards the end of season 5 even if I was within grasp of a title.

They did say in this thread that when this goes live they want to ship it with cuts to sustain as well. Which is awesome, both sustain and raw damage are currently too high, would be nice to cut down on both at the same time

if thats the case then good, but they better not hit all classes with sustain nerfs…. there are a few that i hardly think need that

The sad part about this is that we won’t see anything till 1st May now which is nearly 2 months away. No balance patch, no sigil changes, runes changes nothing. I took one look at the balance patch and decided I can’t be bothered with PvP, very little has changed from last season and it already felt like a chore to play towards the end to stave off decay.

D/D ele is pretty decent outside of zerging. Marauder/zerker mix staff can still drop a lot of hurt when pug zerging.

What Sigil of Revelation will do is eliminate the use of Stealth Gyro for engineers, and Shadow Refuge for thieves. Since they are a visible sign of: “Somebody is in stealth here.”

Evan, pls consider adding 2 more On-Hit sigils. 1 for direct damage application and 1 for healing/sustain. Something like 300-500 damage for 1 target every 5 seconds, and a similar number as healing for 5 allies every 6-7 seconds. (these would be Sigils of Air and Water)

Also give the passive sigils another round of thinking. I think both of the new sigils should have an upper cap of 7-10%, so they would be situationally useful, and not just a downgrade from Sigil of Force. I also think you should keep Sigil of Force and Sigil of Bursting, and as they are. And give us Sigil of Malice, it can replace all of the previous +Condi duration sigils.

If anything they should just rework refuge at this point. The amount of hardcounters to it is absurd and doesn’t make any sense anymore.

I’d be curious what you see as hardcounter to it. Aside the obvious since it is stationary and there for any AoE will hit people hiding it. People say all the time that Stealth got nerfed hard by hard counters, but really, how many are there that are present in EVERY ROUND with your thief.

Revs have reveal on demand and it is part of meta build, same goes for engis.
Surely meta thief runs DD but given nerfs to endurance gains last patch, thief will have to camp stealth even more. I would also highly suggest you to try to play core thief. You will know what i mean by hardcounters.
As far as frequency goes, those counters are in every match, there is always an engi and always stacks of DHs with their trap spam.

I can count on one hand the number of revs I saw in platinum last season, the only reason it’s not one finger I can count on is because I saw 2. That’s without mentioning that thief currently counters rev pretty well even without stealth.

No core build is viable, you think it’s bad on core thief? Go play core mesmer. See how much of a bad arguement that is talking about core specs?

DH are just stupid atm, likewise warriors as they didn’t fix what needed to be fixed on either of them though at least the spear is easier to dodge. Warriors need berserker burst skills to count as lvl 1 or 2 burst skills and DH needed the blocks and health regeneration toning down a bit for a marauder amulet build.

I honestly don’t think the revelation sigil will have much impact, the radius is pretty small and all it does is prevent stealth escapes at best. Stealth openers will still work as target isn’t in combat and a stealth plus 1 will usually work unless they run double revelation sigil, even then the chances of getting that reveal off on a precast backstab+steal combo is as likely to happen as ANet balancing elite specs.

Don’t get me wrong I think the sigil is a dumb solution to a dumb problem but there’s no need to start an Oscar winning performance of the end of the world. If the next expansion is like Heart of Thorns this game and company will be dead, too many cheesed off players from all aspects of the game, which is a shame as I’d like to see what the end of the story was.

I recall posts on the forum requesting raids prior to HoT’s announcement.

Prior to, when pretty much everything was dropped by Anet already. When game was released and dungeons was alive, all raid posts were usually met with “go back to WoW”.

And correlation doesn’t mean causation. Just because revenue is down post HoT lwunh, doesn’t mean it’s because HoT added raids.

It does mean that raids in their current implementation does not help to retain revenues.

I agree, the number of recorded threats of or conspiracy to murder has only gone up since the 1960s in England and Wales, therefore the social revolution of the 60s has not helped prevent this at all! Some may even say it made things worse as numbers start showing a marked increase from then on!

See, 79% of people can make up BS statistical claims too.

This is a dumb change making people who have resistance unable to be hit by epidemic, resistance gets stronger even though it’s far more broken than stab was before the first rework.

They should have limited it to 10 stacks of conditions in WvW, then started reigning in boons so necros can be focused easier making it harder to play with a skill like epidemic on your bar.

Well that’s my opinion anyway.

False the build below can apply significant damage and not break stealth. Lay down the turrets and load up gyro. There are several variants whether one favors Condition , power or a combination. In this build I picked two sources of the Fire condition that can be applied . Note that flame turret can also give a smoke field. You can then detonate turrets to stack on more stealth via the blast finisher. You will not break stealth either on those blasts or when the turrets attack.

Given turrets are not affected by power of the host while the FIRE of Fire turret is you go all condi in gear.

What is dealing damage to you can be seen at all times when it is attacking you. The engineer themselves cannot directly attack without revealing themselves. You do realise the turret detonations will reveal the scrapper and that the turrets are hilariously weak?

Can’t wait for the next “claim made” with some bizarre build.

I’m not moving any goal posts, the source of damage in every single other case but ghost thief gets revealed. I’ll admit I was wrong about turret detonations revealing the engineer however it still doesn’t change the that when a turret attacks it is revealed, you can see it and thus kill the source of the damage.

No the damage source of Caltrops and of traps is the caltrops and the trap.

Flame turrert gets its damage from the PLAYERS condition damage stat just as Caltrops and needle trap get theirs from the thief.

Please tell me why the damage source the thief in one case and the turret in the other?

Ok you can SEE the Turret? that does not change my point. You can see a caltrops field. To prevent damage from the turret you can destroy the Turret. To prevent damage from caltrops you get out of the caltrops field or avoid it.

Traps across the board can not be seen nor should they be. If you pay attention however, you can see them being laid. You can then dodge through it and it gone. . If you know where the trap is, it easier to get rid of then is a turret.

I have encountered some very AWARE players in WvW. They always know exactly where my traps laid and dodge through them because they are paying attention.

They tend to beat me because they are good.

There’s no point continuing this “discussion” with you as you can’t tell the difference between an attack generated by a player and an attack generated by an object even after multiple people have explained it.

Like I say no other class can attack and stay perma stealthed, the attacks from your scrapper originate from the turret and reveals the attacker, the turret.

It might be more practical to add a box that when opened allows you to choose an exotic inscription or insignia. The other items are easy to get (5 ecto and anthology of heros) from within wvw. They would probably want to price it steep to prevent pve material prices from crashing though. Probably 200 heroic things, 200 badges and 2g. Could probably also add infusion extractors into provisioner.

If they really want to keep the extra step for armor and weapons I can live with that.
The 5 ecto/anthology doesn’t do anything for accessories though, and I swear it feels like the same 4 rings drop over and over again with zero chance of getting anything else. It would be nice to be able to turn a few of those red rings of death into something like marauder or commander rings.

Well for trinkets just get new ones with reward tracks.

The reward tracks on their own don’t really cut it. They don’t provide enough unbound magic. To get enough for just a back piece you need to complete the reward track something like 15 times. Your talking months for a full set, and then if a balance patch comes along that nerfs your build you are just sol.

This change would bring back the freedom to experiment with different builds. Remember how nice it was when they finally allowed us to swap stats on weapons and armor? You could finally convert all that random magi kitten to something useful.
How nice would it be to go thorough your storage and change all those duplicate rings and amulets to something else so you could experiment with new builds on a whim?

You can get more magic by consuming any excess map materials.

So it’s slightly faster, maybe something like 10 tracks for a back piece. That still comes out to months for a full set unless you have no job/no life, and still doesn’t change the fact that at the very next balance patch all that work can be made useless.

If you do the bloodstone fen reward track with reward track boost you can get half a reward track in an evening or at least 1/3rd of it assuming this is your main game mode. After 3 days you will have some unbound magic and 50 rubies, last I checked this is faster than PvE and a lot more enjoyable to boot…well…maybe.

There is also an item you can buy for 100 unbound magic to change the stats of the back, amulet and rings.

Mag is purposely losing how ba dat

The people who still run large guild groups gave up on Mag because they claim there’s no fights. So now that there’s no coverage, there’s plenty of fights, but no one wants to play anymore. So we aren’t.

If you want to continue to fight mag players, let us hold the keep waypoint in ebg. Or you can keep ppting because that’s exciting.

I’m not a huge fan of spvp, but that will be my main focus in gw2 in a couple days when the new season starts. That, and other games. Game modes are stale. Everyone knows it. I don’t really feel like wasting gold to transfer yet (despite a lot of people I know already being on another server).

Don’t bother with PvP, it’s boring, full of the same crap you get in WvW and is stale. Just do dailies and play something else.

Very nice write up HiggsBoson that summarised where staff is good, which is pretty much 2 bosses now and as you say it’s debatable on gorseval if your other dps players aren’t asleep at the wheel.

Just to make people aware there are many builds now that do really high damage while essentially being almost a 1 button rotation. Don’t get me wrong the rotations for ele weren’t exactly as hard as say condition engineer but make no mistake to average players they were having trouble breaking 20k with eles while you can do that easily by being almost afk with a hammer guard, power engy and thief.

Mesmers could always apply damage even when stealthed via clones.

I keep seeing this used in these threads by ignorant people. There is a clear difference.

1. Those clones in a condi build don’t do much, they either shoot winds of chaos or backfire for a whopping 3s of burn every 6s.

2. Those clones are incredibly easy to kill and finally the biggest point…

3. You can actually see what is attacking you.

Don’t get me wrong I’m against stealth camping mesmers and I do appreciate a mesmer can shatter clones to apply conditions but it also reveals the mesmer.

Stealth needs a complete rework in general, it’s the safest defensive mechanism in the game and easily the worst implemented stealth I’ve seen in any game that isn’t some kind of solo play only game.

I get the feeling that many of the people defending high stealth uptime haven’t played all classes and all weapon sets, there’s a large number of skills that are completely negated by simply being in stealth.

Yes I include stealth camping mesmers, scrappers and other classes.

Both boons and conditions are completely out of control, permanent of incredibly strong boons like quickness, protection and stab has reduced many weaknesses that helped keep some abilities in check. HoT also brought a ton of extra conditions and CC too on attacks that really didn’t need it as well as extremely strong near immunities to conditions throwing it completely out of whack.

Here’s something to think about too, alacrity was deemed way too strong when it was the complete opposite to the cool down portion of chill so was reduced in effectiveness by 50%. Chill also has a movement reduction aspect and can be kept on targets far far more than alacrity.

What does that say about chill? I guess you can remove it but can’t alacrity but chill is imo way overturned given how easily it is applied by some classes.

So I really wanted to try the raid but...

To the OP, put whether you are in NA or EU and ask if someone would be willing to mail you or whisper in game to come to training runs.

Another thing to add to above is start learning about the raids, you are much more likely to get a group willing to try you out if you have read up on the encounters. Watch the mechanics, be familiar with the build you have (as others say magi druid is a good starting point) and then start actively looking for some training or just LFGs with no requirements.

Bonus points for playing the build you intend to take so you know what it can do.

The problem I have with the meteor nerf is that now staff has no use. D/Wh and Sc/Wh both do superior damage vs large targets (yes I know wildfire hits twice and phoenix 12x hits) and the rotation on certainly D/Wh isn’t that complex or at least you’ve had plenty of practise since HoT.

I guess it’s only use is when you need to range a large boss in some capacity but I don’t know many places where it’s an advantage vs getting on with a mechanic like gorseval. I mean why even run staff on Xera when you can get condi warriors to kill shards and do more damage than staff would?

In fact I’m struggling to think of any place you would use staff anymore, I guess KC as it still spikes pretty hard but it’s not a huge issue meeting g the dps requirement so long as your team isn’t slacking.

Anyone getting hit by maul deserves whatever happens. That’s the single most telegraphed skill in the entire game.

Single most telegraphed?

Meteor, dragons tooth, shatterstone, churning earth, most necro skills, mace auto on guard, hammer for guards, phantasm utilities on mesmer, mass invis, some phantasms on mesmer, barrage, jade winds and chaotic release to name a few that are vastly more telegraphed.

Don’t get me wrong I believe the 24k mauls are one trick ponies and I’ve personally not had any issue with the skill since the change but let’s not spread misinformation about it being the most telegraphed. It is well telegraphed without quickness but not extraordinarily telegraphed either.

It was nerfed from probably the most over powered utility in the game, to still probably the most over powered utility in the game (at least for raids). In short it is still viable.

It was only overpowered in so much as classes were pumping out boons at absolutely ridiculous levels, and still are. It was a unique aspect of mesmers that was nerfed into the ground when it really only needed small tweaks to bring it into line. And nerfing it did absolutely nothing to stop the proliferation of powerful boons like quickness, prot, retal, and resistance.

it did it nomalised the amount of quickness a mesmer can dish out the tweaks you suggest would do nothing for it really as it was a old thing of the past like epidemic which wasnt thought out by the developers that it would have this much synergy and hence and up over performing.
The change made it into a simple quickness generator but its utility is still there there was no way they could keep the amount of quickness it gave as it was just unbalanced having a set amount is way healthier for the game and in cases it became even better since it can now bounch more boons like resistance.

SoI and mesmer being the sole generator of quickness isn’t healthy for the game either just as their aweful mechanics aren’t healthy for a well rounded class. Mesmer has had exactly 1 role in the game since HoT and that is pure support, there are 2 bosses it can run a DPS build (read unique condi build you wouldn’t use anywhere else) on but everywhere else they have no build diversity.

At the same time the quickness and alacrity make it a staple requirement almost for raids which isn’t healthy.

More like a lot of people do not like that raids (content designed and meant for minority) have a monopoly on a whole gear category.

Why not go for just a unique skin that 1) you won’t need to bankrupt yourself for and 2) can simply be designed and dropped into the game while tying it to an appropriate accomplishment.

Ask yourself the same question about raid legendary armor. Does it really need to be legendary? Can’t it just be an ascended with unique skin?

Could be however ANet wanted to put in legendary armour and chose to link it partly to raids as it was a selling point for HoT. If they had linked it to old content you’d be in some kind of weird situation where you’re capable of doing all the same content and challenges without getting the reward because you didn’t fork out on the expansion.

If you look at all the parts of the legendary armour it is almost entirely linked to HoT, you get the gift of craftsmanship in the new map, you get the gift of the pact from new map currencies, the mystic tribute is from HoT only (not sure if core can even see that tab) and the precursor is from HoT content raids.

You wouldn’t be able to do this with fractals as it is core content essentially open to all. Like I say we would be better off with a unique ascended fractal armour set, it reduces the cost immensely and it can be tied to content from fractals. PvP and WvW also have unique armour sets, glorious and triumphant and I have to admit some of the pieces look great and I won’t be bothered if they aren’t legendary.

Yeah I know about that too and it should also be changed so it only hits once on large hitboxes. There was a good reddit post about it which died out very quickly but still.

I’d like to change my earlier statement, after having seen that sceptre relies on excessive multihit via phoenix I think it’s a terrible idea to have Sc/Wh builds. Some may say it’s skill but it’s very clear phoenix was not meant to hit this many times going through large hitbox targets and it hinders sceptre being properly buffed and changed to be useful. I dare say it won’t be long before we see that fixed either leaving ele with only 1 competitive build.

As for the larger question, if you’re good at ele and it’s your main there’s no reason to switch to a different class imo. Was running a dps meter for the first time yesterday on my D/Wh ele in raids and was pulling 28k solid which I know is competitive with other classes on small hitboxes and it’s not like many of them are bringing much more in utility either.

The meteor nerf however I do feel is bad and made staff substantially worse to the point where unless you need to range something it offers no advantage at all vs any other weapon set. Even then the range on air overload and sceptre make sceptre a much better weapon imo for a lot of fights if you can hit the multihit of phoenix.

Not really. You could just keep redoing escort. It may be a bit more effort than ascended shards of glory (assuming you really just akitten in a corner, which most players do not do, contrary to what some people keep bringing up on forums). It’s not more effort than doing fractals.

Yes I could also walk over coals every evening and sleep on a bed of nails which would be much more fun than repeating escort over and over again week after week to get enough shards for a piece of armour.

I also think it’s a little rediculous asking for legendary armour for fractals, they’re little pieces of content you can run for a bit of fun and a little reward like dungeons used to be. A unique fractal armour skin that isn’t too flashy similar to the ones linked above would be nice especially as PvP has the glorious skins and WvW has its own unique skin too. However if you broaden it to include all of PvE there’s far more skins in PvE than either PvP or WvW.

Not every game mode and type of content needs legendary armour and considering the huge amount of work that’s going into designing them to be worthy of the legendary status I don’t think we should have any more than 1 set.

As for PvP, it has a lot of things wrong with it, you can’t really hop into a match and play casually at the press of a button and earn the rewards you want. It also has a lot of balance issues when the elite specs were launched while not changing much over then last 4 years leading to it feeling stale.

It took time to practice and learn to do the challenge mode too ppl didnt just op in and be done in half an hour. Once you get the fight down you can simply go in and clear it with no much trouble for raids the long term aspect is created by the existance of legendary armor which keeps you doing them with a gold in mind and ppl from there can decide if they want to do it after or not the same thing can easily aply to fractals if in the future more cm’s like the 100 cm give gredit towards getting the legendary fractal armor making it long term after that one can decide if they will stick with doing the challenge modes or not. I do agree that wvw and pvp need to be properly refined and balanced before giving them such a reword since ppl would complain that they play an unbalanced and unfun mode for the rewards. But iv also heard from alot of ppl that the main thing wvw needs are rewards like legendary armor and such

I say raids are more long term as you can’t just get a few friends and clear raids, it takes weeks to get to the point where you might be clearing a wing if not longer based on your friends. You could pug and join training runs but even then it takes a lot more commitment to get to the point where raids are weekly clears than fractals.

Even then raids are very rewarding giving a decent amount of gold and the magnetite is a great way to get HoT stats with exotics guaranteed.

Also yes some people did hop into nightmare fractal challenge mote and do it in just over half an hour. The thing that made my group take a long time was we had 1 guy who was essentially useless and another who was lagging out most of the time to the point he could barely do anything. However another group of my friends did do it in about 30 mins or just over for the first time. Did it the other day with some friends and it was done reasonably quickly, druid as always carrying very hard.

fractals are bigger end game content than raids for the majority of players :/ Its not a question of does this mode need a legendary armor its more of a question how much would benefit the game if more game modes had legendary armor and imho both pvp wvw would benefit massively as well as fractals as its the content ppl in pve run the most

The thing is that just isn’t feasible considering how long it took a team to come up with the set of legendary armour that was promised with HoT. I mean it’s been nearly 2 years assuming they started development before HoT came out and we still don’t have it in game. That’s without mentioning the new weapons that are coming out in dribs and drabs with the last one being mistaken for a troll legendary.

I guess we disagree, I don’t think bringing legendary armour to PvP or WvW is what either game mode needs right now. Proper class balancing is far more important than the shiny armour, unique armour skins would be nice but in my opinion not legendary as it needs to have a proportionally high cost to getting it.

You can also buy an agonized tear of alba or something that adds +10 to your AR I think of was it +15.

You probably want to start working on ascended armour, the PvP league system allows you to buy a full set of ascended armour almost by simply playing and getting the reward chests. You can also collect fractal pages and materials to buy from the fractal vendor, possible drops from fractal chests too but higher drop chance the higher the tier. Finally you can work on crafting armour or some pieces, just do your daily spool of silk weaving thread and elonian cord when you have the materials.
