Buying your way to cool stuff takes place in every game. When I played wow people bought raid spots all the time in order to get items that were out of their league. Buy enough isk in eve and you can literally get anything.

Getting worked up over people with more money than you is a character flaw.

I don’t care about money, I care about fairness in a situation in which everyone who pays the same $60 to play should have.

Why do you care if some dude spends hundreds of dollars on GW2 pixels? You didn’t spend hundreds of dollars on GW2 pixels so I’m pretty sure you came out ahead in the deal.

What is the point of playing to get rare items if rich people can just buy them from the start? It’s stupid – it would be like going to an amusement park – everyone pays the same $60 to get in. But the people who have $1000 gets to pay their way to the front of the line to go ride the Legendary rollercoaster, while the other 95% have to wait in a 500 hour line. Would that fly a Disney World? Hell no, it wouldn’t.

“Bought lots of gems” Why am i NOT shocked – this is what makes me like GW2 less than I want too – people can buy their way to all the cool stuff while the rest of us have to spend 100’s upon 100’s of hours to even remotely get close – this is not how a game should work.

It may not be “P2W” but it is JUST AS BAD when all we have in the game to distinguish ourselves are rare items and looks.

Got $1000 and a few hours a day to play the game? BAM – Legendary – so lame.

Gossamer as a 400 tailor

in Crafting

azurrei.5691

I don’t see a reason for Gossamer (and all other fabrics) to not be something you gather like everything else. It’s the only White crafting material you cannot gather. Apparently Tyria forgot how to grow fabric materials and have been forced in to just recycling what they’ve got.

You forgot hardened leather section, which cannot be gathered either, although it’s cheap at TP. The four basic crafting materials, 2 of them (ore and wood logs) can be gathered from nodes as well as salvage and loot, the other 2 (cloth scrap and leather section) can only be salvaged or got from loot.

Very true – HOWEVER – every piece of lvl 80 exotic crafted armor – EVERY single piece – takes at a minimum 10 scraps of Gossamer for the inscription… doesn’t matter if it is light, medium or heavy. Not every piece of armor takes leather – only medium armor.

You use normal keys to open the chests yes, there won’t be an additional chest type for Halloween, it’ll simply be that the existing black lion chests have new items that can be found in them during the 10 day Halloween festivities.

Precursor Creation: "Fun & Exciting"

in Crafting

Now before I begin this is not meant as a jab against Lindsey Murdock for coining the phrase RNG is “fun & exciting” but rather to show one users reaction after attempting to create a precursor using 28 exotic greatswords.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANpCfCB2ENk

Imagine how the players who have thrown 1000+ rares into the Mystic Forge in hopes of creating a precursor & have come out empty handed feel.

“Its meant to be legendary & hard to obtain”

It is. The karma & material requirements are already a massive undertaking even without the precursor. If you think farming for 8+ hours a day for 1-2 months straight for a single weapon skin is not substantial well then I would question ones priorities.

Precursors need to be made available via a vendor/recipe. One suggestion would be to require players to exchange 500 tokens from every dungeon. That at the very least requires some effort. Not just another gold sink.

That idea sounds great to me – would cut down on the ability to “buy” a legendary. Right now if you have the RL $$$, it takes very little work relatively speaking to make a legendary.

Thoughts?

Completely disagree that leveling is boring/grindy/monotonous – in fact, it’s more fun to level in this game than any other MMO out there I’ve tried. Having said that, the “end game” and feeling of character progression post-80 are severely lacking.

The fact that the entire game is “scaled” to an arbitrary level based on the zone you are in definitely contributes to the “lack of progression” when it comes to feeling more powerful at a higher level. In the end, what does lvl 80 really mean if I get scaled to lvl 35 in a dungeon and feel just as weak as I did @ 35? I guess I have cooler looking armor/weapons (maybe, depending on your tastes)…cosmetics only go so far to feel that your character is “progressing.”

And this is just an example, progression does NOT only mean becoming more powerful.

Keys for Black Lion Chests

The issue with BL Keys / Chests is the cost to value ratio is just not there. I’m ok with keys being a super rare drop off mobs…but you know what? The Chests should also be super rare and contain OMG awesome stuff for as much as they charge for keys (yeah yeah gold for gems but there are better things to spend hard to earn gold on than keys to open up mostly junk.) Honestly, keys should be no more than 50 gems each / 200 gems for 5 – THEN people would actually see value in the keys. I have > 150 chests in my account bank and have ZERO intention of ever buying keys at the current price.

cooking, vanilla drop rate++

@ OmiPotentes – no way. You want to make Omnomberry bars rare (expensive)? Decrease the spawn rates of Omnomberries, don’t make it cost prohibitive to make lower level cooking items because vanilla beans are so scarce.

Let me tell you what the vanilla bean change is like. Imagine that Arenanet decided that crafting armor was too easy and cheap, so they decided to take away the various threads from the Master Craft trainers. Instead, those threads were now a rare drop from the bags mobs drop in the same level range as the level of the armor they are used to craft.

THAT is exactly what Arenanet did to vanilla beans (it is actually WORSE) and it is ridiculous. Vanilla beans need to be wayyy more common than they currently are and Arenanet knows it – PLEASE FIX IT.

add some more meat at the end of the stick.

I can agree with this but too many people think that meat should be a gear treadmill, and I have yet to see a succession on what ANet should add that fits with the current design philosophy with this game.

I don’t see this game ever becoming a gear treadmill, so succession to that end are pointless. Personally I would like Story missions. A serious of ‘quests’ like the personal stories that you can pick up and play through. Some designed for solo and some designed for groups. But they revolve around a story envolving the great conflicts of the world, maybe even some historical story missions that allow you to experience some of the lore of the past.

How about a Legendary story quest line (yes, a quest – not an insane grind and P2W situation we have with the weapons) for a legendary armor set? that would be awesome

@ Ryth, actually No I didn’t. Do you realize how fast it is to level in this game, just playing it and not even trying? For the record, I have used ZERO XP boosts – which means people who do level even faster. 20 of the 80 levels on both my 80’s was crafting XP, btw. I love how you say I leveled “too fast” because it tooks months to level in MMO’s that came out 8-12 years ago – definitely a valid comparison (lol.)

The abundance of rose tinted glasses being worn by this community astounds me – John would be proud (actually, he wouldn’t care but… rose tinted glasses!)

GW2 has a solid base – it just needs to iron out the myriad of bugs and add some more meat at the end of the stick.

I really hate when people say “you rushed to endgame.” No, we didn’t rush to endgame. – the game has been out for 6 weeks. The main issue I have with GW2 is that the best part of the game (since I’m not a huge PvP person) IS the leveling process. 1-80 in this game (well, 1-70 + crafting to 80 since Orr is a horrid, un-fun experience) is great. The problem is that unless you like PvP, or have the time and are crazy enough to aquire (in my opinion) cool, but not THAT cool legendary weapons – there is really nothing to do.

Map completion, meh ok sure if you are a completionist.

DE’s – fun the first few times and then repetitive.

Dungeons – repetitive death zergs until you have the vanity gear you want, then no point to doing them

I agree with the OP – I feel zero character progression @ 80 (progression does not ONLY mean power, btw) and no real incentive to go do anything especially given the fact that Orr is incredibly annoying to move around in. Gold is also way too hard to come by without getting lucky or abusing poor design/bugs. I’m tired of paying 1/3 my daily net income to the teleporters.

For the last few weeks, I’ve done nothing on my 2 80’s other than log in, pick ori/ancient nodes and finish my daily.

I really hope some significant more high level content is added soon – it will be a while before I feel like leveling another alt.

I see people’s arguments, but I agree to a degree with the OP. I think T3 cultural should be about half of its current price – still making it not very common. Very few of the people who have it already got so without A) abusing game bugs or poor design in some fashion (i.e. CoF, hoping from server to server farming orichalcum) b)) buying gems and selling for gold (basically P2W in a vanity game) C) getting extremely lucky gambling with the mystic forge

I leveled it to 375 for basically “free” after vendoring some stuff I made. If you have to buy EVERYTHING, I’d say no more than 2-3 gold max (to 400). 1-375 is incredibly cheap as you only make crystals and potions (so other than dust, no use of other blue crafting bits until 375.)

It will get fixed – the TP was having issues handling requests – when they fix the issues and it comes back up all the transactions will get pushed. (though I imagine a huge back log of transactions will slow the process down.)

The only issue that might arise is people who spammed “buy” when it was lagging, resulting in purchasing many more items than you needed. Either be on when it goes back up to cancel the purchase orders in Q or be ready to resell what you do not need…

I have to agree with the OP – the “game with no grind” is about as grindy as a modern day MMO could possibly become…and yet they have anti-grind countermeasures up the wazoo everywhere in the game. The “Anti-Farm code” needs to go or become MUCH less strict. I seriously should not have to stop farming mobs (that I have no choice in the matter – they are they ONLY mobs outside of a dungeon no one runs that drop the item) after 30 minutes just because Anet wants to “stop” bots – come up with a better solution rather than punishing actual players.

[Devquote included] Dungeon Gear Token Costs (Aka, whatever happened to anti-grind philosophy?)

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: azurrei.5691

azurrei.5691

The dungeon system as it stands at the moment is god awful. Lots of grind, little reward. To the people saying “you don’t HAVE to grind, it’s purely cosmetic.” You know, you are right. Unfortunately, all ArenaNet did was replace the Carrot on the Stick – instead of grinding for stats, we are grinding for looks. A grind is still a grind – for a LOT of people cosmetics are as important or MORE important than stats – who doesn’t want to look cool? ArenaNet BANKED their entire game on that fact… and are trying to hide the grind behind the veil of “all gear is equal…there is no grind for character power.”

It's not that I am bored @ 80, the grind is just crazy

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: azurrei.5691

azurrei.5691

All you people screaming max stat gear is easy to get – you are RIGHT – if all you care about is stats there is very little grind in the end. The problem is…the other 95% of us like to LOOK GOOD TOO – and that is where the ridiculous grind comes in unless you are lucky and you happen to prefer the look of a crafted or drop set. Should I be able to get a full set of skins from a dungeon in a few hours? No. Should I be able to get a full set of dungeon skins in 10-20 hours and also have it be an enjoyable, non-grindy esperience as well as rewarding beyond the set of skins I’m buying with tokens (gold, rare drops, etc)? Yes. Can I do that in GW2? No.

Where is GW2 headed?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: azurrei.5691

azurrei.5691

Keep in my this game has a major built in advantage: scaling. New content can be built covering levels 2 on up which players even with maxed out characters can explore and enjoy. That’s no small innovation there, even if it is not “end game” as defined by other games.

Further: I’ve gotten three games worth of enjoyment for the 60 or 70 dollars I’ve paid. That’s fantastic. I don’t need to justify a monthly subscription fee which doesn’t even exist. For me … I put in a certain amount of money, got more than that money’s worth back. Simple consumer math, the rest is white noise.

Scaling has its good and bad points. Right now, scaling is not balanced – cost (in time, travel, etc.) is not really worth the reward – I’m doing the same work because I’m scaled down, but not getting the same relative rewards (xp, gold doesn’t scale well or at all). For example, If I’m a lvl 80 scaled to a lvl 5 and given 40c for a heart reward, I should only pay the 10-12 copper to travel around the map not 1-3s. I should either be getting 3+ silver as a reward or the travel costs should be scaled down. Anet has the right idea…it just needs to be tweaked.

The Risk vs Reward in dungeons is also an issue – dying repeatedly in a dungeon (because, it is just part of the game…) should not reward me with 5 tokens, a couple of trash blues that vendor for a few silver, and a few copper off a boss kill. When you need 1300-2000 tokens for a skin set, doing the same dungeon (sure different paths, same dungeon) 80-100 times or more with little reward while you’re actually doing the dungeon seems…just off. Unless you REALLY REALLY want that skin set, most people will just not bother.

Now you could argue a game like WoW is the same when it comes to dungeons…trash blues off of bosses and a few silver. But the risk is extremely low, each dungeon rewards the same currency, and I would not have to even remotely run a dungeon 80-100 times to get a set of gear – because the same currency also can be obtained from a variety of other sources. Different game, not unique dungeon sets, yadda yadda but I know someone is going to go there so I will just do it now.

The potential for GW2 to be great is there… it’s going to take some time and heavy tweaks in certain cases.

Seriously, no way of refunding mistakes or a sell back option…or even a CONFIRMATION BOX is just horrible design ( and customer service.) There are already a lot of things to get frustrated about in this game, I really didn’t need to through away 10+ hours of karma farming because of lag and a lack of support. Say what you will about Blizzard – I have never had anything but prompt, friendly, and satisfactory customer support from them over the years – kind of disappointed in Anet right now, new game launch or not.

transfer mining "exploiters"

azurrei.5691

However, this is a textbook expoit; using the system in a way that wasn’t intended in order to gain a financial advantage. It may not be as simple as the Karma bug was, but it’s still unintended.

Its no different from going from overflow server to overflow server. Many people were and still are doing this in highly populated zones.

You realize overflow was changed some time ago, right? You also could not choose an overflow server like you can a homeworld – it was “luck of the draw,” I suppose.

This is without a doubt an exploit and the abuser’s need to be punished. OP, I realize that a CM (note, a forum moderator – not someone in charge of design/security/bugs/etc.) made it sound like the practice was tolerated- but are you really that stupid? How could you possibly think that abusing free transfers and flooding the market with ore was not an unintended use of the transfer system? This has made people 100’s of ill gotten gold and drove down the prices of orichalcum and anything that takes orichalcum to craft. The issue needs to be dealt with swiftly and with the proper punishment for those who have abused it.
