Where did they ever say they would never add new armor tiers right from the start?

I followed news of GW2 pretty closely before it came out and I don’t remember them saying anywhere that what the game launched with as far as equipment tiers go would be what we’d have forever.

I think a lot of people assumed that would be the case because of GW1 but assumptions do not equate to broken promises.

They explained why they did what they did and it was 100% needed. All of a sudden we have use for the hundreds of thousands of low to mid level crafting materials that literally served no purpose other than leveling up crafting professions before. They also said they had no plans to add more.

I’m not seeing how it’s a problem if you’re actually interested in playing the game and aren’t impatient.

I don’t think it was an unreasonable expectation.

Colin Johanson’s now infamous quote “Everyone, including casual gamers, by level 80 should have the best statistical loot in the game. We want everyone on an equal power base.”

And: "We just don’t want players to grind.”

And, Mike O’Brien from the Manifesto: "“GW2 doesn’t fall into the traps of traditional MMORPGs… and force you onto a grinding treadmill…”

To me, those are broken promises.

Here’s Colin last month: “You won’t see legendary armor any time soon, you will see Ascended Armor in 2013 for sure though, yes.”

Which means that not only are we getting the rest of ascended armor to craft, etc… But they already have a legendary tier in mind after ascended. We just won’t see it “soon.” So, probably not until 2014.

None of that says ‘we are not going to add a new tier of weapons and armor to the game ever, end of story’. You assumed that’s what they meant but that is no ones fault but your own for misinterpreting what they said.

We already know exactly what legendary armor will be so that’s a non issue. It’ll be the same as legendary weapons. Same strength as ascended just with fancy skins and the ability to change stats at will. Legendary gear will always be BiS.

P.S. There is very little grind required to get a set of exotic armor which is and will be more than enough to do any piece of content in the game.

At least… until they revamp more dragons. Which I’m not happy about. But that’s for a different thread.

Saying that level 80s will be able to get the best in game gear almost immediately was absolutely a call back to GW1 and is not what ascended represents. Saying there won’t be a Gear Treadmill is saying there won’t be new tiers added, plain and simple. You can quibble but I honestly don’t see how you can say that isn’t a broken promise. That’s what a Gear Treadmill is; adding more tiers.

I have no problem with exotics, I easily equipped 8 characters over the last year in full exotics. And while it’s true you can do all of the content with exotics right now, with a gear treadmill that will change.

The point is they’ve already caved to the people who want a gear treadmill once. And they’ve already added power creep by increasing the power of champions and increasing the difficulty of dragons. Once the gear-treadmill crowd gets their ascended armor they’re going to start calling for more, and eventually with the power creep in game, Exotic gear just isn’t going to cut it. Even if we’re all still level 80, eventually you’re going to need ascended or whatever tier is after that to compete in the endgame. And if you don’t get on the gear treadmill you won’t be able to participate in whatever content is going to get the Teq. treatment. Next comes the other dragons and the dungeons, then regular champions, and pretty soon all the mobs have to be updated to compensate for the increase in power we’ve experienced in gear.

And then it starts all over again. Which is not the game I signed up for.

One new tier of armor does not a gear treadmill make.

I’m not white knighting anet here. There is a lot of stuff in this game that I have issue with. Not the least of which is the new Tequatl and proposed future super dragon fights.

I just don’t see the ascended gear stuff as that big of an issue. Or an issue at all, really. People mostly completely exaggerate how “bad” it is to make an ascended weapon to make their argument seem more appealing to others.

How come I’m still enjoying this battle even in an overflow with massive zerging while having settings on low/medium and 10-15 FPS or less?

I don’t know? No one is saying you can’t enjoy it, I don’t think.

I’m getting this now too. I’d happily help a dev with debugging by generating a crash dump or something as soon as it happens for diagnostics?

Any ideas, devs?

I can tell you this: If you want to save yourself a lot of time in the future, you can back up your install easily enough. Once it’s done, copy the entire folder to a portable hard drive or USB stick large enough to hold it. Then, if you ever need to reinstall, just copy it back and run it, and it will update from there.

That’s sort of dirty. You would also need to copy registry entries and possible system files it installs to other directories. It might work now but it might not work in the future. I’ve seen mmo patches make changes to registry keys (other games), it happens. I haven’t really tracked install files with this game client, I’ve gotten lazy perhaps since another mmo I sub to offers backups from within the patching program, as well as a repair tool that actually works. But if you do it this way, don’t be surprised if you wind up needing to re-install at some point.

No. It’s exactly how it worked in GW1 since the game came out and there was never any issues with that for the entire life of the game more than 7 years after release.

As far as I’m aware only the screen shot folder is outside of the gw2.dat file.

I am going to throw a bit of dirt into this pond but opinions are just opinions. New Tequatl is not fine. Sitting for several hours doing nothing (well I guess I could farm a bit things in Sparkfly) is not my idea of fun. Log in at 6am to secure a spot for a kill at 11am while being mostly away from keyboard or watching youtube vids in between attempts? Aint nobody got time for that! And for what? 1% drop chance of Ascended Weapon? I rather grind 5 Ascended Weapons on my own, thank you very much. Yes, thats how it works right now. Unless you want your finger to fall off from clicking on Join button when you try to taxi later on. And overflows are a deadweight unless you go super-lucky and some Tequatl killer guild joins your overflow while you happen to be there.

And no, Tequatl is not hard content per player skill. When I do him on successful groups, I do exactly same things as I do when I zerg new Golem or Megadestroyer or Karka Queen. There is not much more to it. The whole “difficulty” comes to either be super lucky with being in the right instance at the right time or spending pointless hours while playing Overflow metagame. This is still miles and miles away from heroic raiding in WoW. And no, I am not going back to WoW, I prefer GW2 much more. But this whole new Tequatl thing is not well executed. Not even close.

Pretty much this. There are so many issues with the fight that it completely overshadows anything that can be seen as good.

It might be the greatest thing ever put into the game but the technical issues ruin it. We don’t need anything else like it until anet sorts their problems out.

False. You don’t need to go out of your way to get ascended anything. Just play the game and you’ll get it eventually.

The only problem with ascended is that people think they should be able to get it all in 1 day.

For the sake of argument let’s just overlook the massive quantities of materials you need just to level crafting to 500 and focus on the Ascended drops only.

Bloodstone dust is certainly all over the place. Lots of us are just tossing it out by now, but Empyreal shards and Dragonite ore on the other hand….You have to take part in specific types of content to get it.

Dragonite in particular is a pain, because it’s only available from bosses that spawn on a timer, and often in pitifully small amounts (I got 4 from Maw today). And of course keeping up with these events requires the use of 3rd party sites, as there’s no in-game notification.

I do agree we were a bit spoiled with Exotics though. The relative ease with which even casual players could get max level gear with good stats has really done a lot to alter our expectations.

What do you do in game that you don’t accidentally stumble upon any of the ingredients to make ascended stuff?

You get 30 dragonite from the temples in Orr. You get 15-25 for most of the world bosses outside of the ones in the 1-15 areas and then in wvw you get 5-10 for capturing castles and keeps.

For empyreal you get 3-10 from jumping puzzles and open world chests that are scattered all over the place. You get 20 per dungeon path you run every single time baring DR which makes them easily farmable. You get them from capturing camps in wvw in clumps of 5 to 10 as well.

So please tell me what are you doing in game that you’ve managed to avoid all of that and can make the claim that the materials are hard to get? They are literally given as rewards from every area of the game except for spvp which doesn’t have any ascended.

Also self gathering materials I didn’t spend a single copper outside of the NPC materials to get my weapon smithing to 500. In fact I made 20g+ doing it. So I don’t see an issue there either.

It might possibly be the single best piece of content added to the game in the last year but that doesn’t change the fact for quite a few people it’s about as unfun as it can get due to over tuning on low pop servers and/or the many many technical issues the fight highlights.

The actual fight isn’t really all that hard as well. And then there is the fact that 15 minutes farming champs in Frostgorge is more rewarding which is severely disappointing.

What I get from your post is that you DO NOT want to work for anything

YES

What exactly is the attraction of having a second job you have to pay for?

In fact, isn’t this the biggest promise Guild Wars 2 rode into the spotlight on its shiny white stallion? That it wouldn’t be like other MMOs?That it wouldn’t be a grind? That it wouldn’t be “work”? That it would be simply “fun”?

This shouldn’t be a second job. It’s absurd. It shouldn’t require “work”. It’s a GAME. For PLAYING. For FUN.

That is how the game was sold to me from the material I read before I purchased it last year. But sadly, it seems like ANet changed their philosophy and it’s becoming more like other MMOs.

I do stuff in game. I do most events I come across, I’m trying to get into dungeons, and I wanted to get into WvW. But again, what fun is it to play against people who have at the very least, a 15% advantage with ascended trinkets and weapon? That’ll get worse with ascended armor. And what did they do to “earn” that advantage? They had more time to blow grinding than I did.

False. You don’t need to go out of your way to get ascended anything. Just play the game and you’ll get it eventually.

The one good thing about a super tuned encounter is that the majority of people will be happy to see nerfs.

If they made it super easy from the start and buffed it to the heavens then people would burn this place down with rage.

I’m not saying it needs nerfs. But. Unless Anet is going to fix all the technical limitations (which may or may not be possible) this kind of content is not something we need more of.

So, the real problem emerges...

in Tequatl Rising

Posted by: fellyn.5083

fellyn.5083

The few times I tried to play with friends who actually had organized groups together to do it I couldn’t get into the server main or the overflow they were in.

Until that problem is fixed I and most other people probably will stop bothering with it.

The OP is pretty spot on even though I don’t agree the fight is all that challenging or that we need more fights like it.

Anet will have to make Tequatl easier

in Tequatl Rising

Posted by: fellyn.5083

fellyn.5083

Anet can keep making content that requires 100+ people to complete and we can all watch as the player base dwindles away to nothing.

Having 1 thing be like is cool and all for a week or two but if everything in the game starts being like that people are going to get tired of it real quick.

Especially when there are so many technical limitations working against us that it takes very little to make a 2 hour wait for the fight a 2 hour waste of time. At the end of the fight players should not be thinking they just wasted the better part of 3 hours for literally nothing.

To me the worst part of the Tequatl fight is that his mechanics aren’t actually all that hard to learn and get around. What’s “hard” about it is that we have to deal with a bunch of different people who all think their way is the best (assuming it’s not sabotaged by trolls and afkers kitten blocking the cannons from the start) way and the aforementioned technical limitations.

Yeah…trying to join my friends in an organized overflow. I get a message saying it’s full. Gave up a few minutes later.

It’s interesting that the majority of the challenge of the entire event is dealing with the ego of a lot of different people, possibly some trolls and afkers amongst them, and fighting broken game features that don’t have anything to do with the actual fight.

That doesn’t fit my idea of challenging but I guess it does for some.

Try turning post processing down/off. Not shaders.

Post processing doesn’t cause that hideous light effect, only the blur and bloom.

I’m pretty sure it does. From the wiki:

Shaders – Controls the quality of various shader effects, such as wind and lighting. Adjust to lower cheaper materials and fewer textures, which can improve performance for low-end GPUs.

vs

Post-Processing – Controls visual quality such as bloom, depth blurring, portal distortion, character lines, light rays, and selective scene tinting.

In any case turning off post processing gets rid of the glare from scenes in my game.

Just playing the game you should easily be able to gather materials to make ascended stuff.

Also just playing the game you’ll get a lot of laurels via AP chests. Also in those ap chests you’ll get more badges (it’s around 3000 badges for 8000 ap) than you know what to do with that you can also use to buy ascended stuff.

If you’re looking at laurels as the only way to get ascended accessories then you need to rethink your play strategy a bit.

I’m ok with hard open world content, the problem is making that work when the event is scaled on just the number of people, not caring about who is afk, who is running around mining platinum, who is taking a nap on the floor waiting for someone to save them that 1 silver and who is actually fightining….and there is no way i can think to solve that.

Also, gl making skill-based content when most of the people are doing 5 fps and can’t even see their own character.

WHat really happens unfortunatly is, after the nuance dies, everyone stops caring, unless the rewards are exceptional and worth the hassle and (high) risk of failure.

Just see what happened to the karka queen, thats what taco will be in a couple months …and its painful to say because i LIKE the idea, its just very hard to implement it in a working way

And from what I’ve been told the rewards aren’t worth the effort. Farming champs in Frostgorge is still more rewarding.

So I’ve already had significant difficulties with the LFG tool. It doesn’t work. Sure, the functionality is there and it’s great, however…

The people using it are not using it correctly. People put up posts with nothing in it. People simply join groups without reading the post.

We need to place better restrictions on it. Hell just something like accepting people before they join. I had FIVE different players join my group multiple times for Arah Path 2, just now and they clearly hadn’t read the party message. It clearly stated:

EXP ONLY. 3k+ AP path 2 Arah. Speed run. . No PVT.

Now, I don’t like to be ‘that guy’ but I’m one of those players who likes to get things done with minimal kitten -ing about. That means I ask for experienced players who know what they’re doing, running decent gear, who are likely to understand mechanics.

The lfg tool functions, but it doesn’t work. I should be able to accept someone before they enter. Let me see their class and achievement points before they join. Chances are if I’m looking for an Arah P2 run and someone with 500 achievement points joins, they aren’t going to know the run.

The tool is, in it’s current state, a Pile of Putrid Essence for anyone who is looking for an experienced group.

I’m confused what a persons AP has to do with anything.

Have you mistakenly come to the conclusion that AP = skill? Is that what is being implied?

After reading the posts on this forum, I have come to an interesting conclusion: What people really want is not better teams, but better READERS. Think about some of the comments: I get better teams from gw2lfg.com. Why should it make a difference really? Because browsing the teams forces you to take the time to read the description and find groups that fit. In other words, the lfg tool needs to be able to force players to slow down and take their time with reading descriptions. I get the elitist hate on this forum, I feel similarly however a zerker run should fairly allow zerkers to search for like-minded people.

Instead of hating on them, we need to make this tool more powerful in forcing people to read. I think a validation option needs to be added to the tool where people who want to be selective can prevent joins until party members validate the individual. Or else there needs to be some aspect to the tool that at the very least forces people to slow down and take time to read through the team postings in game so they join the right group for them. I believe this can be done, it just requires some creative thinking in how the tool is used, mainly a brainstorm session perhaps? C’mon posters, lets focus on helping them figure out where this tool needs to go. No complaints, lets offer ideas.

Also I wanted to thank ArenaNet for declaring this tool as beta. It obviously needed foresight and I like they take the time to make the tools work right for the game and not just an overly convenient pickup and join tool.

Not entirely true. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve had people join my group and then leave when they realized it’s not for the dungeon they wanted.

“Oh, this isn’t for (insert dungeon name here)? Sorry guys I’m out.” People don’t read on gw2lfg as much as you’d like to think.

I’m really looking to enjoy this adventure.

For what it’s worth the number of files you have to download is not an indication of size. It’s just an indication of how many files you actually have to download (like it says). Some could be as small as 1kb others could be a lot larger.

It’s actually quite strange the way they’ve got it set up.

“help players get together” by excluding those who want smooth runs?

You’re a joke, Shiren. At least be up front and just say “good, I don’t like elitists” rather than trying to add some moral justification to your view.

Your idea of “smooth runs” is abusive and insulting to the majority of GW2 community. Not really what this game is about.

Although I suspect that devs will eventually cave in and implement at least some of elitist-friendly features into LFG.

I literally do not care what class people bring as long as it’s not necro (no group utility, so basically a leech class), and they’re using the right gear and traits. I don’t see how that’s abusive or insulting, in fact it’s more open-minded than we were in the speed running community a few months ago where it was run war/guard/mes or get out.

If ANet allow players to actually accept/decline people trying to join via LFG and if n my wildest dreams they actually implement a gear check, that would be great. Even if gear check was just set to an option, that way people who don’t care won’t switch it on, and people who actually value efficiency and their own time will be able to keep bads out of their group.

You’re exactly the reason those things aren’t “features” of the LFG and hopefully won’t ever be.

There isn’t a single dungeon or fractal in the game that requires strict gear sets and team compositions.

Anet needs to do everything the exactly opposite of what people like you say.

I am troubled.

NCsoft again.

Guild Wars 2 has been updated every 2 weeks for pretty much the entire last year. Every single one of these updates added new things in various places all over the game world. Some of them permanent some not.

By the way, isn’t an update once every two weeks too much? It’s the same with L2, spent a good part of what should’ve been game time into update-the-game time. Shouldn’t patches and/or updates occur only when there are errors or bugs that need fixing or when there is a major addition to the game?

Those 2 week updates are major additions to the game, for the most part. Go to that link I posted in previous reply and you’ll see.

There’s also this thread here if you want to look through the updates for the entire last year:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/info/updates

Here’s a wiki link that might be more user friendly for releases:

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Release

As far as updating goes.. Guild Wars 2 has very little down time and for the most part updates don’t take much time to download. The only reason you’re getting such a huge hit is because you’re downloading them all at once.

Hmm… I guess I should’ve expected that, I have had that problem with Lineage II and Ragnarok long ago, but why are they still distributing the base build? and not a patched build?

Who knows. Anet probably has very little control over that since they’re actually only the developer.

You’d have to look to their publisher for that kind of information which is NCsoft.

My gw2.dat file is 19gb.

Maybe it’s not made obvious anywhere but depending on when your hard copy dvd was pressed you’re downloading several months at minimum to a years worth of updates at maximum. Some of them fairly large.

I take it that you’re new to Guild Wars 2 so I’ll give you a bit more information on why the initial download might seem so overwhelmingly large.

Guild Wars 2 has been updated every 2 weeks for pretty much the entire last year. Every single one of these updates added new things in various places all over the game world. Some of them permanent some not.

Check here to see all the updates for the past year and what’s coming in the next update:

2) A slow rollout is better than a full rollout where the tool is completely broken

Is it? I mean, if we’re talking about a half-competent, well payed company, how many things can a LFG Tool break? I mean, ok, they implement it and it doesn’t work properly at release. As long as it’s not breaking any other parts of the game, who cares? And if they release it and it turns out broken, doesn’t that put more pressure on them to get a long overdue, standard feature up-and-running?

There are lots of things it can break. Like the entire friends list system. Which is connected to just about every other system in the game. And because it’s all cross server..

It’s better this way. We’ve gone more than year without it so a few more weeks won’t hurt anyone.

Couldn’t they have just given it to dungeon masters?

What purpose would that serve? You do realize that the LFG tool is and can be used for more than just finding parties for dungeons right?

It can be used in wvw or fractals or just for open world events. So why would giving it to people who just run dungeons help anything?

Because gw2lfg is used mostly by people running dungeons.

Or do you think it’s better now where it’s completely random?

So because gw2lfg, a third party website that has nothing to do with or is not run by Anet is used mostly by people who run dungeons the actual in game LFG tool which has more uses than just looking for dungeon groups should only be given to people looking for dungeon groups?

That doesn’t make any sense.

It’s understandable they want to push it out slowly and polish things. But a LFG tool is kinda meaningless if not enough people participate on it.

Say 1000 people in BETA.
Half is offline = 500
Half in EU = 250
1/5 need to lfg = 50
1/10 want to play the same dungeon = 5
You can find exactly 5 people for your party lol.

I’m fairly certain it’s more than 1000. And it wouldn’t be split between NA and EU like that. That wouldn’t make any sense.

It would be nice if Anet told us their roll out plan numbers though.

I’m annoyed that it’s being delayed longer than we were originally told as much as any one else.

But.

People mention the market. But we’re all forgetting how often it was down during the first 2 months. It worked maybe 1 hour a day because 3 million people were all trying to use it at once. Which is the reason why they had to let people have access to it in waves.

I think they are taking that precaution with the LFG early. Instead of just giving it to everyone. And then having it instantly go down because everyone in the game is trying to use it at all at once.

This is how it is supposed to work. The better your server gets at it the more consistent the kills. If it can be done in 15 minutes, which it obviously can, then 20 minutes is a waste cause you’ll be finishing it with more than five minutes to spare. Just get able to do it in the 15 minutes.

I didn’t know every single person who plays the game was on Blackgate server.

So at the end of the day I guess we’re just looking at it wrong? The challenge comes from organizing 100+ people. Right? Right. So playing the game is just secondary.

This is an MMO. Organizing people is as much, if not more “playing the game” as mashing buttonz.

Whatever floats your boat.

Me personally? I prefer to mash buttons than to deal with 100 different egos all thinking they know exactly how something should be done. Which results in 100 different people going in 100 different directions.

And then there is the fact that 1 or 2 people can sabotage the entire thing right from the start. That’s fun too.

And both of those things together is somehow misconstrued as a challenge? No thanks.

For me randoms can leave the tequatl, that would give the slots on map for organized guilds. For instance couple of guilds make an alliance and officers of those guilds discuss which guild cover which part of the encounter and they communicate between each other…right now it is impossible to get even couple of ppl from the guild cuz of overcrowded maps.

Why do only people in large zerg guilds deserve to be at the fight?

So you’re argument is I like this so please don’t touch it, and other people must suck because they can’t complete it? No other inputs there?

There really isn’t much to add that hasn’t been added already.

You either like the challenge or you don’t. I, for one, LIKE the addition of difficult content. The failure rate and rewards (or lack thereof) don’t bother me at all. I want this content to stay because of that.

So, yeah, hearing people stomping and pitching a fit on the forums not even one day in about how its “impossible” and “too hard” makes me snarl. You don’t like it? Don’t do it… leave the spot open in Sparkfly for me.

So challenge is relying on 100+ other people to be at the top of their game? Something that is completely and 100% outside of your own personal control?

I didn’t die once in my 4 attempts at him today. I used cannons, mashing that #2 button like a boss, I dpsed the boss, I killed fingers. I did everything I was supposed to do. We didn’t see him go below 85% hp.

So at the end of the day I guess we’re just looking at it wrong? The challenge comes from organizing 100+ people. Right? Right. So playing the game is just secondary.

The beautiful thing about over tuning it right from the start is that they can adjust it downwards and everyone will be THANKFUL for it.

It would be impossible for them to make him to easy from the start and then have to buff (nerf) him later. People would kitten far more if they took this rout than the other.
