I’d love ~40 hour work weeks again. To put it simply, my free time to play usually hovers about fifteen hours per week, which is often spent doing things like… laundry and cooking. Some weekends I get to indulge more, but unfortunately this isn’t common.

And that’s it; when I have the time to entertain myself and indulge in playing video games, I don’t want to have to work in the game to get to the fun parts. If I wanted to work to get to the “fun parts” of things, I’d just spend all of the rest of the time I have working to retire sooner. And even further, I do like to do other things with my free time than dedicate myself to a single online game.

We are so on the same page but that’s irrelevant when it comes to gaming forums, especially this one.

There is a hardcore group of players here who clearly play GW2 for more hours a week than most of us work in RL and they tend to swarm on threads like this.

“But I play 30 hours plus a week…what the problem?”

Give it a month and just play something else.

You’ll get a hardcopy for $10 in-store or online on ebay. I bought the collectors edition of GW2 with the artwork book and miniature for 20% of retail cost a few weeks after the game went live. Players get sucked in to release date pre-purchase. Don’t believe the hype.

Unless your a “must have it now!!!!” player that has to zerg with the masses just take a deep breath and save yourself the hassle. It’s cheaper to just hold off and most peeps are paying full price to be a beta tester. Don’t be that.

I’m not an altoholic, don’t have that luxury of time, but I get the complaint and heres hoping Anet will address it in the future. Giving it’s a gameplay style they have always encouraged I’d be surprised if they don’t offer an alternative once the release hype has worn off.

Taking Grind to a whole new Level

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

fireflyry.7023

Fortunately for me there are enough fun things to do in GW2 that I can ignore the ones that aren’t.

So, just like I did with old legendaries, I look at the requirements for HOT legendaries and simply say, “nope.”

I won’t have legendaries, because the grind to get them is not what I consider fun. But I’m OK with that, and happy to let people who do want that sort of thing to have at it.

Nicely put and I’m much the same. I’d be in to them if they actually meant something and were implemented decently. I’m just not into playing a work simulator and it’s great they can be largely ignored.

As a player who is into RP and highly themed characters I don’t really like any of the skins either, would be nice to see more variation of choice and more subtle design. SO wish they would do this. I don’t really want to look like I’ve just been to a bad 90s rave party and there are really way to few options available imo.

Would also be cool if they had more varied ways of obtaining them with skins representing this so you could show/knew on sight the players journey. Say 1 for sPvP, 1 for WvW, 1 for PvE, 1 for fractals, 1 for Raids, crafting, even 1 for open world PvE etc, etc of each weapon type. That would friggin rock and I’d definitely be after a few then.

Personally atm I lump them in with GWAMM as it’s pretty much the new GWAMM anyway. Might as well get a “I <3 Grind” T-shirt with both and I’m happy to avoid that.

gw used to be a game where what made the difference between me with 15h/week and another 50hrs/week was skins and titles – ingame skill doesn t need stats.

So true.

100% Rep Guilds & the new Guild Chat System

fireflyry.7023

It was a release concept that hung around too long imo. It made a tiny bit of sense at the time I guess, get new players in a new game talking to each other and focus on getting a main guild populated and active but it quickly became highly restrictive.

Why it was ever tied to accessing chat between guilds baffles me. Horrible decision in a game where you want people to meet and have easy group communication.

Another dev that needs a slap.

You didn’t lose Hero points, that’s physically impossible. You have as many and no more as anyone else who did the content. Hero Points are a finite commodity.

That’s exactly the point. They are finite.

Where was it said that poster “lost” points?Pretty sure I read it was complaint on the points being mis-spent when compared to players who have known about this for longer and as such have saved their points more appropriately to avoid the HP cap and subsequent forcing of having to play through HoT content straight away when maybe they would rather not.

Seems a fair call.

Where are you inventing this time from? In just two hours I unlocked half the HPs on the main continent, including all the ones in Orr. It isn’t going to take that nearly as long as people seem to be attributing to this process.

Burning through old content we have all played a thousand times is avoiding the issue.

Actually people have reasons for not minding the design, and people have questionable reasons for disliking, and there is no reason for ANet to step in because in two days it will be too late, and in one month everyone will forget all about it just like always happens. Usually because they’ve realized all their complaints were unfounded.

That’s an overly defeatist attitude unless your saying Anet has never ever ever changed a thing in this game based on customer feedback and are totally infallible.

I wouldn’t mind “progressively” unlocking the elite spec on one of my characters, but doing the same grind over and over on all my alts? How did they overlook this, lol.

your the ones that made the alts, they should take up a lot of time and effort imo

Yeah but the game openly embraced and encouraged Altoholics, they have always been welcomed by the designers with specific game mechanics to encourage this play style of mass re-rolling and character slot buying. Now they are being retroactively punished for spreading their time, now the most important resource in the game, and in many cases RL gold too thinly over to many toons.

The requirements to keep this play style relevant and enjoyable just went way up.

I find it hard to focus on more than 2-3 toons in any game but I get why the Alties are grumpy.

I don’t get these types of post aren’t all MMORPGs inherently built so that the players will grind for something? If there was no grind and everything was given to players, what exactly would you do in this type of game for end game content aside from PvP? Also what do you define as a “satisfying feeling of achievement”?

No… there’s games where players are allowed to PLAY the content they like without having to grind x then craft y etc. to then finally do the things they like. Sadly those games are rare because they’re not as lucrative as a massive grindmill that keeps players working their kitten off.

Yep. They’re rare because people don’t stick with them. They play for a while, get their stuff early then go to the forums where they complain about nothing to do and leave.

So that leaves games with grind. Don’t blame the game for giving people what they really want, not what they say they want. Devs see what holds people year after year versus what loses people quickly and they know what to put in their game.

People are kind of missing the point.

It’s not the “grind” mechanic or players who dig that at fault. I don’t think anyone is arguing that.

It’s the change in the reward given and effect it now has in a franchise where previously the mechanic had minimal, if any, effect on a player getting to max level with max stats and skill access quickly and relatively easily in comparison to other games in the genre.

This game kept grinders happy with titles and skins to show off, casuals were happy in that this had no bearing on their access to content or the game-play restrictions a power-tier based hierarchical structure can bring.

My god this thread shows the dark side of the playerbase, a creation made by Anets casual philosphy over the years.

It’s more the complete neglect and about face of the time<skill philosophy they actively promoted as a point of difference since day one imo combined with retroactively changing the ease at which one attains a fully geared and specced character (trait changes, then the NPE, then etc, etc).

Don’t neglect many commenting are obviously players from the GW1 days where you could level and fully skill/gear out a toon in mere hours THEN start playing the game which is why many, like me, grew to love and support the franchise in the first place.

I mean people are bringing up WoW comparisons as a form of rebuttal.lol

I always thought the expansion would be like starting from scratch in this regard so I’m ok with this (gear grind, not so much but thats covered in other threads) but I get why many feel pretty annoyed at the moment, especially when Anet already got their money and I still have the option to wait and get it cheaper.

Can’t say I sympathize too much with the pre-purchase blues though. That mechanic was clearly proved fubar way before this game started in on it.

I’m on the fence with this one but Anet does itself no favors with it’s BWE’s and using this as a selling point for pre-purchase. To me this is the catalyst of much of this complaint and I’m still of the opinion beta testing should be done by beta testers, not used as a sales pitch to customers.

I’ve played a fair few games where at the starting level your a fully kitted out uber-beast of death slaying everything in sight in some huge awe-inspiring battle with all skills unlocked and all weapons blazing full bore. Wahoo this game is friggin amazing!!!

end flashback/dream sequence

You wake up at level one naked holding a wet noodle realizing it will be a LONG time before you feel that way again.

From what I can garner this is exactly what has happened here with giving players everything for nothing to play with, then taking it away. Sure might work ok in an offline RPG but in this genre it just seems to kitten a lot of people off.

I just want instant gratification. I don’t want to work in a videogame. Give meh the new legendaries now. Yes, before the launch. And I want an “instawin” skill.
And oh I want to use all the masteries at the same time, with all the stats in the game. When I’ll raid, I want to be able to click 1 and oneshot the last boss, who will drop me a full set of legendary armor, not the BS precursor.

^This.

Forums are designed specifically for customers as a medium of communication with peers and designers on both aspects they find positive and negative. That is their sole intended purpose.

I just skip threads discussing issues that don’t concern me, if I have a differing opinion I express it in that thread and move on.

Last thing I would do is create a thread attempting to invalidate their right to complaint or effectively say “I disagree so shhhhh”. That’s just bad for the community as a whole.

For the record I have no issue with this system, then again I have 2 mains and largely ignore my alts unless bored. If I had say 5+ mains I had slogged away on maybe I’d feel differently. In saying it’s a bit early to throw toys out of the cot on anything, they could introduce a whole new system at any time to change how we get these.

^This.

I don’t mind “grind” or long term reward mechanics. It really is an inevitable consequence of the genre in that you have to cater to this type of player as much as those that choose to not play this way. I respect that even if game play wise I personally abhor it and choose not to take part in work simulation in a video game.

To each their own.

My biggest issue is rewarding players that choose to take part with more in-game power and statistical gear based advantage than those that choose not to, or even simply don’t have the option or luxury of such timesink.

It’s my biggest bone to pick and why I’m holding off on purchase of HoT till the dust settles. Have your flashy skin or title showing your “uber-awesomeness!!!”…could not care less. Be more powerful in-game because you have the luxury of playing for 30+ hours a week while I might be lucky to squeeze in 10 due to outside commitments.

I’m kind of glad its not a super necessary mandatory need-to-have now kind of expansion. Like other MMOs. Don’t feel like being 3 months behind is really going to cause me any issues in the long run.

This is exactly how I feel, which is weird for me as every other release since Prophecies dropped has been a “must own now!!” kind of buzz but it’s great that I can largely go without it for a month or two till I decide whether I want to continue with the game at all. The f2p model is great in this respect as at least the old map won’t go complete ghost-town and one of my biggest enjoyments in any MMO is helping out newer players so I’m pretty much fine waiting to see how things play out and just rocking around meeting newbies.

I’m also of the opinion that release month is often a turn off for me as many players are out to burn through the new content as quickly as possible like a fat kid with a new cookie jar and I’m not into that buzz. Things seem much more chill and relaxed once those players have charged through the new content and are back to QQing about being bored while I can just enjoy it at my own pace.

The whole thing feels rushed to me and I’d rather pay half price in a month or two for a complete and solid product once the hype has died down than full price in 2-3 days to be a beta tester. Been gaming too long to get caught up in the whole “new shinie!!!” trap.

The gear grind also concerns me and if that’s implemented to an even greater degree I will probably leave Tyria for good. I don’t play Guild Wars for that.

Lastly I main Thief and it’s so broken right now I’ll wait and see if it gets some post HoT lovin else just pick it up cheaper in a few months and re-roll Rev like the majority of the class players are doing.

Basically ectos in GW1.

Same difference. Same result. There’s too many mats to just take gold out of the equation as a mat will just fill it’s place and you forget that like it or not work simulation is a large part of these type of games.

Take gold out of the game and the market is controlled and dictated purely by the players. No thanks.

I get your buzz though OP. CoH for example was a game where currency was largely irrelevant early on in it’s life cycle due to the ease of farming. People would just give it away and a veteran set me up on my first day of play with enough cash to last me years just for having a friendly chat. On the first day I played currency became a non-issue and this was normal.

I was gob-smacked and it still brings a smile to my face but in the majority of games like this it just doesn’t work. Capitalism is the most embraced financial model as it keeps players playing, and that’s what most game makers want.

It also creates a level playing field.

Eliminating gold would just shift focus from garnering reward for doing pretty much anything to reward for farming the mat that everyone has replaced gold with.

How to save dungeons

Why does anyone expect them to invest more time on this when they are releasing content in a few days that people have to actually pay for, it’s pretty clear what they want us all focused on at full price release day and missing out on profit or farms if we don’t buy the expansion is just adding another type of player and incentive to the “must pre-purchase or must buy at release” crowd.

Business is business.

I had every intention of holding off on buying HoT at release, due to concerns and topics best left in other threads, and pick it up in a few months once the dust has settled and I actually know what I’m paying for.

To add this is the first time I’ve ever felt this way and I’ve purchased every other GW release from Prophecies and up to this date at release, usually collectors editions, so I’m not just a potential HoT customer. I have a long-standing customer relationship and history with the game and company.

This adds a whole new incentive for me though as I can’t stand Snooze Waste farming and I’m not a huge fan of fractals when compared to dungeons. I may actually buy the game sooner than anticipated if Dungeons become even more of a ghost town with decreased reward and Raids becoming the new repeatable cash cow. While I in no way agree with such decisions the intent here seems all too clear from a business sense.

If new content is the most profitable content in an MMORPG, it sells itself.

I’m mostly gutted for the new players more than the farmers. Nobody will want to bother with this content in any regard in a month or so and it’s such a cool aspect of the game that a lot of new players may miss out on.

There’s idiots in all formats of this game, or any MMO for that matter.

I’ve been playing PvE exclusively the last few months after burning out on pure PvP and it’s funny how many make PvE out to be this land of rainbows, hugs and lollies with rivers of chocolate where bunnies skip and play all day while all the players stand in circles holding hands singing songs of love and all-welcoming joy while PvP is a depraved asylum of debauchery, insults and kitten-slinging.

Mis-informed threads like this do more harm than good, only breeding false animosity before a player has even tried the format. Sure pugging can be rough but that’s true of either format and PvE is not always the hippy holiday many of you make it out to be.

Dailies that have turned into some sort of chore to do, if you bother to do them at all, are dailies that are poorly designed.

Agreed.

I would rather be rewarded for playing content I choose in a way I enjoy on a daily basis as opposed to having the content and method of attaining daily reward dictated to me in the restricted manner it is now, work simulation.

This would be a non-issue for me if not for experiencing the old system which I vastly preferred. In saying I think the new system could keep both camps happy, it just needs WAY more variation and choice with less map and time-gated restrictions. I don’t mind being told what to do anywhere near as much as being told where and when…. This has far greater intrusion on my daily game time.

Sure I’ll do 4 events…heck I’ll do 6 if you want but why in friggin Queensdale? My character left there months ago and owes money. Sure I’ll chop down some trees…but why does it have to be in an area I’d otherwise have no interest in?Sure I’ll kill a boss but why that one whose spawn I just missed.., etc, etc.

Many of the other achievement categories would slot in perfectly as well. Use this weapon this many times, kill this mob type/level x amount of times, etc, etc. Just some more varied and interesting methods of completion that can easily integrate into pre-existing play would solve any issue for me and there’s so much room for improvement.

Maybe different ones for each map or zone so it could be completed regardless of where you’re currently enjoying exploring or playing. Make it work for and with the player and what they are up to in-game as opposed to drop everything, get dailies done, go back to what I was doing.

Currently to me it just comes across as merely a way of shepherding players to zones where new players are to give the impression of the game being more populated and active than it actually is. Either that or just lazy design as it’s very cookie-cutter and unimaginative.

Easier shinies does not negate these issues for me.

World completion is the worst.

I dig it, working on my 4th, but like others I take my time and integrate it with leveling a new toon. Only part I hated was WvW when I was stuck on a vista for completion that took weeks to get but that’s a mute point now.

I’d hate to try and burn through it though. I could see myself getting over it quickly then.

Dailies and other dismal failures

Epic rant OP.

I agree with the core of your argument though. The old dailies were symbiotic with how ever one chose to play. The new system is predominantly fetch quests that detract from what I actually want to do.

World Completion Trasnfer?

Nah.

It cheapens the reward and turns it from a time sink commodity to something people can just buy with coin easily. I don’t dig the retro-active cheapening of effort in order to garner reward.

They already took WvW out, and that was the most annoying part.

I miss the variation in both damage type and build freedom, GW2 is very cookie cutter.

It’s an easy fix.

Have various selections of difficulty with relevant reward aka “Hard mode” in GW1.

The hardcore difficulty players after “shinies!!!” rocking full ascended on every toon get what they want while the players that just want to enjoy the content and couldn’t care less about the chest at the end or gear-grind get their enjoyment.

Win/win.

Toxicity in game modes

People pug/hot-join sPvP in online mode with chat on?No thanks.

As such I’ve found PvE to be worse off in regards to toxicity, especially the general attitude towards helping new players from many veterans or the attitude shown towards obviously newer or casual players to the game and franchise, more so since F2P.

In saying the games mechanics have a lot to answer for. Vets should be encouraged and rewarded to help newer players with the shinies that this game seems to now revolve around.

This game is just so fixated on reward and profit now. Hindrance to that breeds toxicity.

Personally I’d hold off, be patient, save some coin, and play a finished game in 2-3 months once the dust has settled and it’s cheap at your local game store.

This is only based on my highly subjective experience in-game, conversation with others, and research/reaction from players and peers online but I’m not paying that much to be a beta tester, and I cued up at game stores for the last three expansions but this feels rushed.

I also want to see if it’s Grind Wars 2…if so all good but I’ll move on.

Mounts [merged]

If a Mount is breaking your immersion more so then way point travel that you don’t need to be around you just open up your map and touch the spot and your there, but your class has NO magical aptitude what so ever. Then you Sir need to NOT play MMO’s or any other game for that matter.

Your missing the point, no need to be so derogatory.

Map travel was instigated in GW1 and as I have played the game since Prophecies release this has zero effect on my immersion. It was introduced 10 years ago at release and is an ingrained and welcomed core mechanic and as such has little influence.

People running around on pink unicorns farting rainbows does.

Coming from other mmo's (suggestions)

I actually agree with every point and I know many people who see it the same way.
Sadly the GW2 community is horrible when it comes to suggestions and criticism.

The first reaction is always “Hell no, GW2 is different, if you don’t like it why don’t you play another game”.

Why do you think people suggest something? Not because they don’t like the game.
If I wouldn’t like the game, I wouldn’t even take the effort and suggest anything.

Just because GW2 is different, it doesn’t make it better. There are many things which could be changed without anyone even complaining if A-net would do so. But just by suggesting anything people already go 180° rage mode and flame you for even saying something.

Let me ask you this:

Do you really like the game to 100% without exceptions and agree on everything A-net does?

I don’t see any flaming or rage.

The reason some people “flip out” is because there is seldom any comprehension as to why these things aren’t in the game in the first place with a complete lack of respect to the majority of the pre-existing player base. They are also often badly written coming across as little more than “..last came I played had this so I want it here….me, me,me!!!” which isn’t opening the topic up for discussion as opposed to coming across as being selfish and needy.

Cue blunt responses,

At the end of the day I see most good and well thought out ideas voiced here from pre-existing and new players embraced. Many new players should be taken with a grain of salt until they know what they are actually talking about though, join in the debate for sure, to to make such game changing “wish-lists” is laughable. These threads are everywhere too, hence yeah….

Let me ask you a question:

If I went into the WoW forum and asked for gear to be made easier to get, removal of mounts due to me not liking them, etc, etc, etc what do you think the response would be?

Yeah…that’s flaming and rage..
