Are our skills really weak?

Exactly, so any comparison of skills itself is really pointless, because of class mechanics.
Only skills that can be compared to each other somehow are utilities (blink vs Lightning flash f.e.) And even then, the other options of the certain class should be taken in account…
@OP: Sorry, but this discussion is hardly leading anywhere, the game mechanics are too complex for that.

It’s not pointless because ele has no mechanics different from warrior.

Yea, it’s correct.

This means that warrior’s axe auto is extremely high!

Total coefficient would be 5.26, over 3.6s, that is 1.46 per second … we are getting into figures comparable to 100b here

Yea.

It’s displayed as 470 (x2), so if it follows the same rule that other skills do; it means 2×470 (i.e. each hit does 470)

I don’t think this is true, mesmer just doesn’t rely on his autoattack to do his dmg, that’s all. Well played mesmer can dish out very respecable amount of damage, trust me

They have less damage in their weapons because good chunk of their dps includes phantasms.

I'm really missing energy mechanics from GW1

When u went to do DoA HM for eg, it was all about energy management and yes there was skill involved but not when you went to City of Torqua, where every enemy had 100% energy denial, which ended up in constant wipes coz monks couldn’t heal/rez you couldn’t use ur skills etc.

I would rather have long CD on some skills b/c it still means i have other skills available for use as opposed to none when u run out of energy.

I didn’t play gw1 pve but usually people were hiding (or at least should be hiding) energy through different weapon sets in gvg/ha.

We have weapon swap on 16s cooldown and no other profession mechanic like adrenaline, virtues, toolbelt, shatters, deathshroud, pet or even stealing. Our autoattacks except lightning whip and fireball should not be compared to other classes because they have other tools which ele lacks or is worse at.

Mesmer dps from weapons is probably the worst in the game, closely followed by ranger. Guess why?

No decent group, because ele isn’t just about support. It’s the combination of damage and support that makes them work. There are plenty of ‘zerker warriors’ that only stay in the fight because of the protection and heals I toss ’em. While still doing damage and buffing them with fury/might as well.

As a counter question, when was the last time you invited a guardian and didn’t automatically assume he was a support character? How often do you ask wheter guardians focus on support or dps? Or do you just assume that all guardians do both perfectly?

If you’re playing with staff, your fury/might support is worse than other builds or even warrior itself while dealing much less damage. If those ‘zerker warriors’ need your heals I suggest you start playing with better players. What is your build anyway, 30/10/0/0/30 or 0/10/0/30/30? Do you support your team with fury through aura share or persisting flames?

As a counter answer, if I get ‘support guardian’ by a chance I pug, I will most likely kick him for wasting my time.

This thread is not about viability about about being decent option. Staff is viable, either is running naked. Have you seen a decent group in pve that is using staff ele for its support or cc?

What about Magnetic Aura + Powerful Auras?

Personal reflections doesn’t work on aoe projectiles and you have to spend 30 points in useless trait line.

And then you have an Ice Field, a Stun Field. Useless? How about 2 water fields that can be used for blast finishers so others can heal on them, while one of the removes 4 conditions from your team?

Static field stuns only if someone passes it through and only reason to use cc is to either interrupt boss or stacked bosses, neither of which can static field do

Still not convinced? How about the chill/cripple/immobilize AoE removal skill? Or the perma weakness you can stack on bosses with stoning?

Completely useless in pve.

Where on earth do you get the idea that staff eles don’t have any form of party support?

Did you even read or just come here from your zerg to say how staff eles are good in zvz?

Candy Dragon gimmicks are the default food you should use in casual runs. More perception is rarely bad, and you heal about 300 per second which is noticeable. Costs like 75c which is nothing for a guy about to get at least 1.26g for completing the dungeon.

It apparently steals, not just heals.

No worries, I have never brought any projectile defense… on my Warrior.

Exactly. Ele only saving grace in pve are swirling winds. Without it (staff build), ele is completely team dependant and doesn’t bring anything to the team except small fire field while having no survivability.

I wasn’t specifically talking about Elementalist. Anyways, Staff-build works at 600 range.

Staff build works theoretically at that range. Practically, boons have limited range and even then you bring absolutely nothing except small fire field, not even projectile defense. And you’re even more squishy without a focus.

Not that true Haviz: a build comprising FA and elemental attunement on D/F can achieve that easily. The damage won’t be qual to warriors but it won’t be far from it either.

You far less survivable than warrior that has more damage output. You’re only saving grace are swirling winds but you’re lacking vigour and blocks.

You missunderstood me. You got a full skill bar on each element, right? You use a skill on fire element and swap to water, now you will find 5 skills without cd on those, right? You will always have some skill without cd. Ofc warrior has the auto attack but it doesn’t do anything special, just strong dmg.

How about you check how does it work in reality?

Oh, more examples. Sweet. Until zerker is considered the “meta” for literally 100% of the content in the game, or even half, it’s still a moot point.

Excluding uncrittable bosses zerker is considered meta everywhere. I’m sure that’s more than half of the content.

Staff, healer or dps? :)

in Elementalist

The only advice in that scenario is essentially to not worry about it because virtually no one calls each other out on DPS and if they are paranoid and crazy and do try to call you out on your DPS they have no way to factually prove how much DPS you are or aren’t doing.

Naturally, people being people, decided to run with the clearly never would happen hyperbolic scenario I mentioned and now want to draw the conclusion I’m advocating to leech off your group. All I can really say is good luck with that.

This game might lack explicit dps meters but doesn’t lack implicit ones.

Current dungeons are not designed for skipping, except for a select few spots. That means you are not supposed to skip them. The devs can’t fix skipping right now due to a number of reasons, and you are twisting that fact to mean that skipping all fights is a part of the game.

I’m sure you are supposed to spend 2hrs in arah on average when Robert told us they had intended to have dungeons doable in 30 minutes.

Try Dredge at fotm 79 and tell me that cc isn’t important.

Yep, you die because they cc you.

It won’t. Here is what I said two months ago about “support builds” and the scrubs who want them…

“A lot of players are used to traditional trinity MMO where a “support” character could hang around in the back out of danger buffing his team not really using any twitch or micro skills and get carried through content because even though his skills are low, the character type is important enough to warrant inclusion and thus the lazy man has a path to success. The lazy and less skilled players gravitate to support/midline roles because it allows them to blend into the background for the most part. They don’t get special credit when a raid goes well, but its also usually not their fault when it fails.
Not saying this description applies to everyone who wants to play a dedicated support character, but it certainly describes a significant enough portion of them to make it the rule not the exception.
As I have said in other threads on this topic, this is an action MMO. You can’t reach the top by playing a support necro who sits at 1200 range with staff auto, casting wells on cool down. You have to be in the mix pulling your weight. If this isnt appealing, this probably isnt the game for you.”

Midline in gw1 gvg was also considered a kitten role, being carried by frontline and backline. Exceptions were dom mes and ranger.

Honestly, I’ve never seen a single support class that has stated, “Support only. No zerkers allowed”. It simply does not exist in this game. At this point in time, only zerkers have the capability to be elitist (unless someone is deliberately screwing people up). In other games, sure, elitism is everywhere… but here in GW2 that power lies with the zerkers.

I’ve been in a parties that had pvt and clerics elitists. They wanted to kick me because I had zerker gear. What happened to play how you want?

You can get annoyed when someone spews so much bullkitten. Colesy pretty much nailed it, good dps groups will be a little slower while typical pug that currently skips will be much slower. And all of that for couple of porous bones.
