…and it wasn’t because there was more mini-games.

At launch the game was about dynamic events, leveling, crafting and gear progression. I had more fun back then. I really miss that time. I loved the feeling that there is a reason to fight that monster and help those peasants. Now I feel that the game is about farming achievements and getting 8th back piece that I really don’t need and don’t care about… I never cared much about achievements. That didn’t change. But AN puts most of their effort on mini games and achievement system instead of that what was really fun for me – dynamic events, fighting giants and dragons with crowd of people!

After launch I was playing a LOT. Now I rarely log in. Just to check out new area or dungeon. After an hour I’m done and bored. I spend more time on the forums now.

You’re suffering “Worn out Shiny” syndrome.
Those of us who had been playing the first game constantly just months before Gw2 launched, could tell right off the bat that it was very Shallow from the get-go and all the hustle and bustle around the new features everyone else was so jazzed about, was in reality, mostly illusionary.

Dare I say it – server merge?

It’s not so much that we need Server’s merged, b/c there’s plenty still that you get thrown into OVERFLOW when you try to go to LionsArch or Queensdale.

Where we need the “Merges” basically, are all the other Openworld zones in the mid-levels… basically everything from Brisbane Wilds up to Malchor’s Leap… IE: they just need to make 1 single instance for NA, and 1 for EU, and then just use selectable Overflows the way “Districts” used to work in the first game… (this would also help people meet up for a particular Dungeon they wanted without requiring a 3rd party website)

2+ second activation time skills + animation Rootings, simply aren’t feasible in a PvP action game, especially one where people can dodge instantly. Infact it’s not even viable in the upper tiers of PVE either where you somtimes have to interrupt your own 0.75 second attacks just to dodge one of their big 1.25_sec telegraphed Attacks…

Anyone who’s NOT thinking about all this stuff in 0.25 sec increments, yeah, probably SHOULD go back to playing a slower game… like that new Cartoony Borderlands MMO NC is siphoning profits away for…. b/c there’s going to be a lot of skill-ceilings you’ll just crash head-on into in later content that will be added to this game in atleast the immediate 18 months ahead.. (or already exists in places like Arah but most people never see it b/c it’s not “rewarding” enough yet).

Plus for some reason, it appears to be nerf proof.

Yes, it is still possible. You’ll hit around 1.2k crits with a 30/30/0/0/0 build using full ascended berserker trinkets.

It should be noted however that Ascended gear is NOT actually vastly better than Exotics. In many cases there’s only a 3 point difference in their dual-stat totals/coefficients (except for one of the utility amulets with MF%’s and the MF mechanic itself meanwhile will never see an end to the debate on how effective it actually IS).

Basically you just have to measure what a Laurel is worth to you, versus how little or how much you play daily & thus could afford all Ruby/Equisites or even the Scholar Rune for armor too (which I only tend to MAKE, not use, b/c they’re fetching ~3.75_G on average which is frankly rekittened)

Probably should have specified that in your First sentence of the post then b/c it really limits who can help here, while also only focusing on a format where individual contribution (as anything besides a portal mes) is trivial at best.

That said… if you notice the people running beside you don’t always have swiftness, then you may want to look into the Voice build just so that more of them all arrive at the same time to absorb that 5 max per source AOE damage that was such a brilliant Idea for Anet to put into a format that was already “won by attendance”

Some of the newer ones seem to have a permanent data-entry field for this, like the ReefDrake. … which begs the question of why they didn’t go back and Retroactively grant the rest of them permanent naming.

1400 toughness 350+ healing & Dwayna runes 18k HP

Seeing similar results with 250heal/24K hp in dungeons where everyone whines that 1 shotting makes HOT’s worthless. …I think I actually sat right in Lupi’s bubblebarf twice in a row without going down. I don’t understand why tho… just 1 of those will usually down my guardian who has 2x the healing. Weird math maybe??

Wish my 3x bloodline Lifesteal Necro was seeing similar gains
(but then the sPvP’ers would be QQ’ing even harder…..bah)

HotW’s got some decent skins… & PVT gear as well.
As stated, the underwater bosses are very tedious… but atleast the trip towards them can have a few surprises and always level 75+ Gear drops & maybe even some good mats

“Useful” is for non recreational activities. I’m just a pool attendant that a reef drake summons when it wants to splish splash & take a bath. Infact you might be a Guardian’s pet and not even know it :o

…and then Guang showed up, so now there’s a snickers bar in the pool too.

Arah gives you credibility and a real variety of challenging fights, which is worth more than all the COF1 gold or TP-flipping profits you see other people grinding away at in a single unflinching location day after day after day.

sPvP … while fairly inconsistent in how it’s always-changing… does a similar thing probably to an even more passionate octave… While the MOST “skilled” players also receive Gems.

Let’s not forget WvW which prior to April, only had a couple armors for sale and none of them were Exotics IIRC.

Another thing left out here, Orr Temples … whose chests generate a lot of Cores & even some Lodestones for lots of people daily assuming those servers run enough support builds to actually keep the rest of the Zerg alive.

Addendum to the Orr Temples: Obsidian shards are the most direct way to quickly generate T6 mats now since most “endlessly spawning” Event Mobs that used to drop them, have since had their Drop Tables completely “Smiter’s-Booned” (removed from play).

If there is any one single totally-underrated, underpopulated & unrewarding piece of content in this game…. Besides open World Champions of course …. It would definitely be Caudecus’ Manor. Very few people do it now because enough FotM runs gets you a Utility Pendant that gives roughly the same amount of Magic-find as every single piece of Noble gear combined…. This is a Problem Compared to most of the other problems. But it’s a problem that 99.9% of the playerbase seems more than happy to overlook so long as they have easy farms like COF, COE, FOTM, WorldBosses on predictable Timers, and all the other crap that gets farmed by glass cannons on a daily basis.

ProTip: Skins never “directly impacted” GW2 gameplay, and more AP only rewards more skins & temporary consumables (that last 1 hour tops).

For those who have alot of issues with the region restrictions, would you rather anet just abandon this tournament and wait till they can put one up that is inclusive of every nation on earth?

If it meant they’d go back to further balancing ALL the classes again … y’know … which could help the OTHER 99% of their customers who play this game (not just you guys who qualify for a barely-even-still-alive Esport tournament) …. This is the only thread they’ve even responded to the Skill Changes issue in

…and it’s in the sPvP section (surprise surprise)…
This gives everyone 1 of 2 options:

  • Bomb that thread with questions about when we’re getting skill splits but just get Moderated instead and probably no further responses…
  • Go to Bellevue in person now, or PAX in August & demand an answer from one of them

historically…. like I’ve already said before… They didn’t do anything meaningful about the core problems in PvE in the first game until 2007. So that was atleast 2 years of over-focus on sPvP and umm… 4-1/2 years before they finally added their first skill splits?? … which they STILL failed to use enough of when it came to the poor neglected pve-Paragon and to a lesser degree Rangers. (they’re both STILL in a fairly broken state which probably explains why Rangers & Shout-Warriors alike are still not widely accepted in Dungeon & BL teams)

That’s also why they never let us have unlimited Wells in the first game….
…IE: they were tied to corpse count. They even tried removing that limitation in 2011 but it proved to be way too powerful when combined with all the other Group & Self “Sustainability” the class had back then…

We’re pretty much the opposite of them right now it seems… minus any real Group sustainability hence our sucking in most dungeon team support. You can try to point out the dozen or more situations where players of every skill level do better on average with sustain/survival composition, but some 1337 kiddy troll is always going to just pick them apart while contradicting everything that’s “Meta” at the same time.

^…This really points it not just being balance issues isolated to just-Necros and just-Ranger or even only-Warriors & only-Mesmer/Ele composition. It really really highlights how badly they screwed up their own game by having nothing BUT “Conquest mode” for sPvP and (rewarding badge/point-wise) nothing BUT Zerging/P.v.D. for WvW, and nothing BUT elite/silver mobs & champs in Dungeons with no emphasis at all on team splitting during boss fights. (well except for Crusher/Hunter fight but that’s an oddity in itself b/c of Mob-Rez & Earthshaker/Immob mechanic).

…or something even crazier could happen… like them D.R.’ing COF type “same path 200x a day” runs finally which had always been a constant gold farm from day1 almost… Then it would be gold itself that was the golden commodity once again.

Really… that just furthers my hidden message there, quite elegantly I’d add (the Boxes you mention): It’s all a gamble now b/c that’s apparently how Anet wants it. The entire point…. is that they don’t want T6’s being the classic definition of Farmable and dropping too often from any one set of exploitable mobs. (especially crystal dust apparently?).

I was attempting to make the point in a more … “here’s where you can sign up” helpful sort of way tho…

SkyChef attempted and advertised a guild-list here of people willing to do Dungeons the way we can only assume they were meant to be done…. but there were almost no takers which suggests that all those people who should have been candidates for it, gave up long ago…. gave up on what I’m not sure… I guess waiting for Anet to reward players for how MUCH content they complete?, versus how much the rest of us bypass, portal, or stack & faceroll?

Generally I gotta say I really prefer the teams I find on LFGcom tho… atleast when compared to some of the ones I’ve joined in L.A. in my home server**. They hardly ever wipe and don’t seem to get downed nearly as often which implies they’re not all Zerkers … but are more balanced. Plus…you CAN filter out the COF’ers =P

**Crystal Desert, which has really been on a consistently depressing decline since its one single month of almost-glory right after launch. (I wish there was some way to improve it, but it’s just way too “pubby” of a realm for it’s own good and I’m transferring off it really soon).

You didn’t disprove a single one of those. You simply dripped heavy Snark over them and dismissed them instead. You only requested examples… now you’re moving the goal post to “must be l337 only”… Then again that’s all these Threads ever turn into anyway so I guess I shouldn’t be the least bit surprised.

Fortunately that’s the complete OPPOSITE of the attitude found in-game in friendly pugs who amass for these things simply because they give them simple & undeniable visual win conditions on HOW they’re contributing (Vs. a bunch of lifeless numbers that not even the experts here seem to agree on either).

Could you make a list of ones that actually DO? and not just ones that are objects and therefore ignore crits.

  • Mai — doesn’t start taking real damage until her own “Pet” strips the shield off her …IE: the longer a group can tank together, the more damage they deal
  • Crystal Behemoths (P1 Arah) — The more of the “Green Light” Torment you can endure, the greater the Damage you deal to them.
  • Lyssa Preist — is ALWAYS moving around, even teleporting but still vulnerable to crippling. Stacking in melee-only or being Glass just means dying to Exploding mobs or being an instant kill for the Gorrilla Champ. (1 Endurance spec’d player like me distracting it can save the lives of 30 other players)
  • Wraith champions — Regens back to full with LifeDrain, the more players that are around it. Everyone coordinating knockdowns ALWAYS trumps DPS.
  • COE Husk — Okay this is more of a bomb-wrangling minigame, but it’s still a fun skill-check in a sea of DPS-checks.
  • Jotun Stargazer — Pure team-coordination check. Also depends on decent crystal “Runners” who can get through the zergs of risen spiders & meteorite field
  • CM Seraph (Path3) Well obviously the Keg part… but also the Keg party after that…
  • CM Hudda Hudda hallway, no explanation needed here either.
  • CM path1 “Frost” Ice-blower boss (kiting & con-removal > DPS here)

There’s probably a lot more I’m missing here, and even MORE room for improvement if Anet were to bring back some of the Gw1 skills that also countered brainless DPS’ing.

^that’s more of an issue with blood necs not receiving proper life steal MATH on their healing (& maybe other stats too) Attributes. If they did, then it would become very difficult for most rangers to simply outlast a good Pow-Blood necro. The best they could hope for then would be a Regen-battle Stalemate dependent on who could keep poison on longer

Hey I got a Question about this that hundreds of other people are all asking too.

Why is a PvP Tournery preventing you guys from giving PvE balance a check-up?

Why is this Tournament stuff…. preventing your team from making PvE Skill Splits ? …seriously. People want to know. If anything this is the perfect excuse to take a break from your nonstop PvP balancing, and buy a respite for a much larger contingency of gripes among the silent majority here…

I find this to be a Derailment from the real issue of Group DPS. Same reason there’s still so much prejudice against Thieves despite the spreadsheets saying they also have “Good DPS”. …. to borrow a popular phrase: “It’s the Buffs Stupid”. Ours are very selfish to begin with. We’re also severely limited on how much and of what kind we can generate. Can we grant Stability even just for our Pets in Dungeons? How much Fury can we really put out without taking a HUGE hit in the base DPS we ourselves put out? Might?? How many stacks of it? lol 1-3 for a quick burst? WHO CARES!. We need … really really NEED, trait compression, and redundant Boon sources just so we can apply boons twice & cover everyone in the team along with our Pets who reportedly “Steal group Buffs” o_0

Did you know that? This whole AOE’s can only affect 5 targets things is STUPID AS HELL in Dungeons but we’re paying the price more than most classes do. So next time you’re kicked out of a party & don’t know why… well don’t blame yourself. It’s not you, it’s Anet’

I’ll never understand why they focus so much on SPvP in this game, It will never be an esport, and out of the 3 paths currently played (SPvP, WvW, PVE) its the least played ..

Yet they continue to focus on it..

Because they really, really, really want it to become an eSport. Which isn’t a bad thing. The bad thing is focusing all balance around it and letting the rest of the playerbase (which outnumber the PvPers) suffer as the game modes are too drastically different.

It’s ALWAYS been this way though. When they weren’t allowed to (b/c of infringement worries) take the name Triforge …. they went with ARENA-net next for a reason. At Launch, GW1 was alllllll about PvP. And people whine about Pay to Win now…. should have SEEN that first year of GW1 then… OMMMMG. You wanted to be competitive and able to counter the gimmicks? NOPE, gotta grind for 1 or 2 months unless you bought the skill packs. …go collect every skill in the game first by grinding gold and maybe by the time you get back from that BerganHotsprings farming-venture, you’ll have learned just enough skills & the right elite to run HammyStorm without getting laughed out of the ring ….meanwhile the P2W’ers were well into their 3rd ranks on HA and already rejecting you from teams.

The Devs they started with and the ones they kept bringing on… have always been dreaming this impossible dream of making an RPG that’s popular to PvP in. Riot thinks they’ve done the same thing. And Blizzard thought they did the same thing. But sadly ALL OF THESE COMPANIES only succeeded in making Psuedo PvP. Gw1 resulted in BuildWars. Starcraft was really just BigG**Hunters 24/7. And LoL… don’t even get me started on that. It’s like the TF2 hat obsession except with Bots & Skins instead.

None of these studios ever succeeded in making real PvP (in an RPS setting) Mainstream. But that won’t stop them from keeping it their first Priority that they kitten around with for the first year every time until they eventually concede defeat and start bringing the Balancing efforts back towards PvE again the next year (or the year AFTER THAT if you look at Factions—>Nightfall). Who knows though… maybe they’re like Thomas Edison** and 20 years from now they’ll finally pull it off? Hard to say!

The disparity between classes isn’t really a huge issue because the classes aren’t directly competing with each other.

About 80% of the LFG calls & current “Profitability Metas” would disagree with you here.
….just like they did in Gw1. Be it the old TOPK & UW Trap teams… the Ursan BS that came later, or the Fendi / DWG farms in the game’s final days…

Mainhand sword is a bit too much Style, & not enough Substance … even if you manage to master it. Can you toe to toe with a 1-hitting boss almost indefinitely with it? ….Assuming you’re traited right & popped Truffle Stew for extra dodging… Sure… But that and a dollar won’t even buy you a soda anymore.

What ranger really needs there is a 3rd Mainhand weapon somewhere in between the brainless Axe chucking & the MethFiend-tier timing/reflexes required for maximizing sword DPS on a glass-rampager (which is the ONLY stats that honestly makes sense for it). Everyone in between, has nothing solid to use there.

I’d propose Torch. Infact I’m wondering why we didn’t just get Torch as a mainhand from the Get Go? You’d have a better stationary condition stacking Auto… probably a really solid AOE on 2… and just for the hell of it, a great Block-to-Blind on 3. Something like that would go really really really well with Axe or Dagger offhand & exact the simplicity, grace, and intuitiveness of Guardian Greatsword Damage.

Learning ranger

I’m looking for good rangers to follow in all of the content. Wvw, dungeons, fractals, and tPvP. I’m aware of gasmask and Xsorus (probably misspelt). And any good guild wars 2 general YouTube channels would be good as well.

You on NA? …if so I’ll play directly along with ya instead of just tossing out Videos to watch… don’t matter the content either … everything but FOTM’s. Maybe I’m not all super happy about where Ranger is at the moment but if I can keep a Pet up in Melee for the entire Lupicus fight and hold the Gorilla Champs aggro outside Lyssa’s Alter for the whole fight, then I must be doing something right. Need gear made? Want mats instead to make the gear yourself? Can help with that too, know the most concentrated locations to get those drops. More than happy to do all of this for free. Been doing it since Gw1 where I even gave away Armbraces to people I was coaching.

Just b/c someone has bad opinions of this class… doesn’t mean they’re bad at it.
So if no one else offers that kind of help, then consider mine b/c I’ll back it up

New Pet Suggestion - 2 birds with 1 stone

I propose that both of these points can be addressed through a single action, the addition of a new pet. One which, like some current support-able pets such as Bear, Canine, Feline or Moa, has it’s F2 skill be support in nature, but unlike all of these, has it’s other 2 non-primary attack skills be support in nature as well. Essentially a pure support pet.

Been saying this for a while now….

Except all 3 of those Skills don’t have to be changed permanently, they just need to change when we put the pet into Passive (or just after making it heel with F3).

There’s already a bit of this to a degree. Take a ReefDrake under water for example and push F2… It puts up a Feedback which is awesome (It just doesn’t last nearly long enough to be useful in PvE right now so it needs a split).

Next update may be a ways off

This is my opinion on WvW, which is all I play.

Oddly enough, the 2 classes I tend to worry the most about facing, well it sure ain’t ranger, but they’re in a similar vein… IE: a really good Mesmer or Engineer. Just seen a few in a few duo fights who were… scary for some reason. Wish I’d seen a ranger even once who left the same impression. But never did :\

Players on that tier are all pretty rare tho’ atleast in WvW

Melee’d Lupicus. Wilderness trait to transfer Knockbacks is really important here, otherwise you’ll just get knocked out of the Mesmer’s Feedback bubble. I think I also got a nice Whirling Blades off during one of his multi-bolt shots that also reflects quite a bit. I noticed I had his Aggro quite often too, if you can handle that aggro and not get 2-shotted, then you can usually regen fast enough to tank him well into Stage3.

Umm.. Spring actually was juuust enough group Healing which I was surprised by. B/c it’s usually never enough compared to Troll Unguent when you’re holding aggro from Champions for the Temple Runs. Reading Lupi’s telegraphs though in Melee range seems a lot harder though than it should be and I’m not sure why. So if half the team isn’t reading those telegraphs properly then your Spring probably won’t keep THEM up.

— uh pets? (for Melee) Drakes/Moas … obvious reasons should be obvious…

Sig of Stone & Wild are also pretty important for learning it IMO and also keeping your Pet up, but I don’t see any reason you couldn’t drop those later and put real support skills in there (umm, assuming we have any besides quickness for getting others back up faster once every 60 seconds :p) …with enough practice, and enough Crits, ya might even be able to drop Rampage but I don’t know why you’d want to… the extra Damage & Stability is just too good to pass up here IMO.

I just don’t think there’s any way to drop Great Sword though. I just found it way too important for this fight. You get KB’d? It gets you right back in bubble range instantly. Big hit coming and you’re somehow out of Endurance? Block FTW. DPS could be better but I see no other alternative here unless your group wants to do it ranged and then it just takes 2-3x longer :p

Hope these observations help. The main thing starting off I think is just to be able to survive and be the last one downed and to keep regenerating faster than anyone else so you can keep getting them back up and hopefully there’s a Guardian or two cycling Stability when yours is on cooldown. Support = Reviving? …right?

— Would NOT recommend all HTP gear for this. As the extra Toughness might just cause his Aggro to be locked on you full-time and you don’t want that as mostly support. Reyna’s Set is a lot better IMO b/c you need all the Vitality you can get!

— No idea yet what would be the best Rune/Orb set(s). Sorry :\
