This basically.

Anet’s dungeon model is flawed simply because it didn’t design its classes to be equally capable.

Sad part is, a year later they still haven’t fixed it.

Technically it was more balanced at launch.

Busting the Myth of Useless Pets

A Pet is fine too in solo content. Everyone knows this.

Where it’s not fine, is in group content for the same reasons that a Thief who dies often is also considered terrible while a Warrior or Guardian or Mesmer (or even a Grenade Engie) who does the same thing, gets a free pass.

That is to say:
They have no Group Damage/Boon support or Reflects to fall back on.

It’s not even their personal DPS… so you could stack all the Might on them you can, and it still wouldn’t matter to the rest of the team because they CAN’T SEE the effects of it. All they can see on their screens is the stacks of boons on themselves or the stacks of blind, Vuln, Confuses & Reflects on the Boss. IE: Pets need a bunch more pure Support skills while in Heel/Passive mode. ….this was something I had been saying for a year or two on Guru before the game was even released. It was completely ignored and the whole class suffers now due to that.

I also disagree with your views about damage etc. in PvE, which gives me the impression all you care about is direct damage, in which case we are very different, and that’s also fine-but we’ll never agree.

That’s not * me * disagreeing there. I’d actually PREFER it if damage wasn’t the only thing that mattered. You’re disagreeing with the game itself and the way nearly all encounters operate at optimal levels. IOW: you’re disagreeing with Anet’s current designs. Their current designs have no use for Stealth in PvE and in some cases such as those where you have to keep an NPC alive, it WORKS AGAISNT YOU. I’m not attacking you, I’m attacking your position with regards to how shortsighted and un-observant it is.

Stop knighting, and start actually playing the rest of the game where this stuff is impossible to miss.

Healing Builds

ilr.9675

Yes.

Hence the disclaimer at the bottom that was already written before I went back and edited anything else. … This is also why I’ve always taken vacations from playing every year for the last … ohhh 5 years? And look at Catacombs… even when they DO overhaul something, it just becomes a slightly different DPS race. Sometimes with an annoying Lift&Pull “Arcade Claw” minigame where Healing, Control, and Conditions doesn’t change anything either.

So why are AH guardian builds...

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: ilr.9675

ilr.9675

Because one was deemed acceptable by a respected theory-crafter, and the other was not. Most people are sheep, they’ll accept what they’re told and not give it any second thought. As it is, I think both are kind of lame.

This

Also supply and demand as well… There’s more supply of both Warrior players and viable Warrior builds in PvE than there is supply of Guardians & sustained non-conditional DPS Builds for Guardians. IE: it’s all relative. Guardians basically get a free pass b/c they can provide a few seconds of top lel support & sustain without dedicating their whole build to it like Rangers, Engies, etc… have to.

…yeah… it’s basically just Anet’s balance team being hypocrits and I don’t mind b/c it benefits my primary class (which makes me a hypocrite too and I don’t care).

Healing Builds

Posted by: ilr.9675

It sounds that for build diversity they should allow healing to be a lot more effective in PvE.

For every 200 points in healing…. every class gets a Trait that grants a stack of might on your allies when they’re affected by your healing skills or you reapply a Regen boon. ….1200 healing? Boom, 6 stacks of might for 12 seconds. Problem solved.

.

Well not really solved b/c all that does is kick the can down the road on why Berserker & Knights are the only stats worth using in 95% of all encounters. But you get the idea.
It would buy them some time to make better mobs, A.I., and consistently balanced attacks / frenzies…

From reading PvE forums I noticed that there are some players who are concerened about what this means for PvE content. I understand that it is not wise to take this comment too dramatically, but I think some clarification is in order.

Uh… There is no need for clarification. He clearly states that he’s in another country, with a bad connection, at late hours well past midnight, after working the entire day, and in that circunstance he prefers to read the sPvP forum, which is easier to grasp, than the dungeon forum.

Anyone who takes this as a “OMG, ArenaNet hates PvE!11!!!!” post is being ludicrous. If anything, Mr Sharp should not even bother reading the forum under that circunstance, and rather go do something pleasing with his free time.

That’s terrific and all…

Now explain why it’s the ONLY PLACE their balance team ever posts anything close to ‘Developer Update’ type justifications (you remember those, right?) the other 51 weeks out of the year?

And Dub’s right…. they’re really really active there lately. A less informed player than yourself, would simply assume this PAX lan thingy is all they care about this year…

Cheapest Crafting Skills?

Cooking … but … you have to be extremely careful by checking every single thing going into the mixing ingredients. IE: avoiding most spicey things or soups b/c they require Rosemary or Chiles. Even Confections are stupid expensive sometimes b/c of how much Vanilla & chocolate & Butter can go into them. … You might even have to open your bank tab and just Right-click “Buy more on TP” on every single ingredient to find the cheapest ones and then cross reference it with what you can actually make with it on the Database listings.

Jewelry can be done for a Profit. But again… research first. Most guides are instantly out of date the instant they become popular b/c they just increase the demand of their main ingredients (especially for cooking).

I guess leatherworker is sometimes cheap, especially after the 300 range.

I usually keep a browser open to http://www.gw2db.com in the other monitor and look for the cheapest thing to mass produce in each specific level range. …Or in other cases I’ll farm the ingredients myself and then only make “Rare” versions (instead of Masterworks) that sell for atleast 6-10s over their materials costs …. this also applies to making lots and lots of high priced mixtures for Food by picking the Rosemary or Dill myself b/c I have tricks to Gather it faster than I could simply farm the gold to buy it outright.

I mean no offense, but I find stealth on 3-while technically “unrealistic”-pretty much an excellent addition on PvE. Stealth is never bad for you on any scenario.

I don’t think there’s any way I could possibly be nice in response to this. It’s really really really difficult but I’ll try. … When you stealth, often the only place for the “aggro” to go to is your pet. And it doesn’t always stay there. Sometimes it comes right back to you the instant you attack. I’ve seen it come back the instant my stealth wore off infact. And if you’re higher damage than your pet is… you’re going to grab it even faster.

The ONLY way I could assume someone wouldn’t know this is if the only pet they ever use is a bear (which is “sticky” aggro-wise due to its toughness) and never fights anything more dangerous than a Veteran… in which case, your damage is so pathetically low already, that you’re not even a factor in what actually constitutes a good PvE discussion. Good day sir.

Or Concise counter points such as “Well you have to count the stacks of Defiant” and “30% faster pet + swiftness + F3” stuff and yes even the complete joke that is stacking Might on a pet that can’t actually remain in attacking range longer than a second & 1/2… Keep it up.

Though I’d also like to see that one thread about Ranger Skill curve resurrected as well if everything is going to come down to “learn to play” b/c the amount of TIME it takes to reach those thresholds is not just a Trivial Resource, especially when there’s 5 other classes that seem to have a much easier time doing the same exact things faster.

If they want to discourage Berserker they have to force sustainability. Instead of one powerful attack every 5-10 seconds enemies could attack every 0.5-1 seconds.
And fights have to last long enough

They could also gain Quickness when they “enrage” from being DPS’d down a little too quickly. Lots of little ranged cone hits & conditions with sped up fake-out Telegraphs followed by the real attacks. …stuff that gets Rote Memory players off their game a bit.

Also: Actually got one of them to comment on how they have no time for Skill Splits or think it would take really extreme cases to justify them …. and how that clashes with the latest Colin’s blog post on lots more new Skills/Traits being added to be unlocked after what we assume to be level 80? Well you could look at the difference between exotic accessories and back items and the ascended ones to get an idea. I assume it would be similar for gear in other slots.

There’s a HUGE ASTERISK here when you do though that not everyone remembers to look at… You don’t just look at the stats of them both Unslotted. Any Exotic accessory you currently compare to an Ascended, let’s take this for example:

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/2/22/Ascended_example.png

…straight from the Wiki…

A lot of people only look at the Total stats of them unslotted. But it becomes immediately obvious that there’s only a 3-point difference on nearly all stats between Exotic and Ascended when you factor in what GETS SLOTTED INTO EACH OF THEM.

Ascended gear is extremely limited by the Infusion system. The infusion system itself is basically everything that was WRONG with Ascended from the get-go by the way because it is 100% a treadmill that’s only used to run that same treadmill you got the first Infusion from … Faster. Fractals being the most egregious example and WvW probably being the tamest. You don’t actually get more customizing with Infusions, you get LESS.

Well…. now that they’ve announced MF gear going bye bye you definitely get less (B/c we can’t just get that MF utility pendent to REPLACE ENTIRELY all the MF prefix gear we used to have to run before that Utility infusion was introduced).

What you’re talking about there isn’t “hard” or difficulty…. it’s CC / “Control” spam. Immobs, cripples, KD’s, chills …. the same crap we eventually learned to just bypass entirely on the Droknar Forge run through Lornar’s Pass (Where’s a Guild Rush version of that by the way? We need one).

No that’s not A.I. or “Difficult” …that’s just spawning dozens of mobs in the middle of your thoroughfare with crap that slows down good players and maybe eventually kills those who are unpracticed in the “Running” minigame.

Because you’re not listening…. It didn’t start off bad.

Are you suggesting that it somehow ended up bad?

Because the game we have right now is a thousand times better than what we had at launch.

I am using the words of the Dissatisfied in order to communicate back to them. Good and bad are subjective, so it is pointless to argue that something is either good or bad.

For me it is good, for them it is bad.

edit: oh I didn’t read clearly, that was directed at ilr. Oh well I leave my post cause I’m too lazy to change it.

You don’t have to talk over us. You’ll notice not all of us are using subjectives either.

We certainly shouldn’t completely derail the main topic by going into TOO MUCH detail about the exact changes or misdirections that have been net-losses. But yes there’s dozens of areas here that are not even “Well they didn’t blah blah their full potential meeemeemeee meeeeeeeeeeee QQ /wrist” crud. No these are dozens of specific Patch notes that can be pointed to where they took their eye off the ball and didn’t give us any alternatives to keep that “Dream” of the manifesto moving forwards or try to change the broken Metas.

That’s okay tho, like I said, ….like they’ve pretty much told us flat out themselves…
They’re EXPERIMENTING right now. Y’know, like we used to do in GW1 when we had 8 fully customizeable Utility slots to put any skill we wanted into in any order we chose, and then could save them to Templates

I guess I don’t understand why people continue to play in spite or come back and post here to try to convince people that the game is bad.

Because you’re not listening…. It didn’t start off bad.

Now…. It didn’t exactly start as great as Anet themselves said it would, and there was never any way it would EVER live up to the “Unreleased MMO Hype Tier” Fantasy most RPG’ers have a horrible tendency to build up in their own minds. (Hence why they’re Fantasy RPG’ers, b/c their imagination is generally the best Movie/Game generator specifically for them that will EVER exist with today’s currently tech limits).

So yeah, it didn’t start off bad… but there’s been almost no Quality of life additions aside from Rendering option in WvW. Balance has all been completely 1 sided. They lost probably a 1/3 of their base back during the Ascended items debacle. The crafting gets you no where, while the economy has been nothing but runaway inflation. And the cash shop is mostly a casino. The Living story had a couple fun minigames here and there but certainly nothing you could build a genuinely replayable MMO around.

That’s okay though… No reason to go off half kittened and tell everyone with criticisms to Get da kitten OUT if we don’t like it… That’s not how this franchise was ever meant to work. Cuz y’know… if We don’t like it, we can play less or in some cases not at all till things get better again b/c we ALREADY paid for the game. This is not some F2P Forum where your’re either providing content for the Paying customers by being an Easy kill for them (like in Planetside) or YOU ARE that monthly paying customer. No no no… we already payed. We can send in that feedback just whenever…. whenever it’s convenient or the mood strikes basically.

And hey… Some years it takes Anert longer than others to see the light. Sometimes, like in Factions’ case, it took them 2 or 3 years. And that’ll just lead to either a gridlock of feedback or a return to daily login levels seen back when the game took 2+ years just to hit that 2 million sales. (and Gw*2* would probably hit 5 million a lot faster if they were doing more things that lived up to their Manifesto).

So the game’s not dying… (it can’t die, it already sold 3 mil copies)
…it’s just not really going anywhere very quick. And this MyFace thing proves it.

I fail to see what’s so difficult to understand here.

If it spawns “Unending WAVES” of mobs… then those mobs cannot give “100t” equal in drop table values to those of more static mobs on regular respawn times. Though this also had to do with how their Diminshing Returns works which they will never … NEVER EVER come right out and explain anymore. So don’t hold your collective breaths there either.

If it spawns infinite waves of mobs… it’s going to get nerfed. There is no inconsistency to attack here here, no grande conspiracy. … just common sense that if all you have to do is stand in one place auto-attacking whatever comes to YOU and poses no threat… that the Risk V. Control, range, support, condition.

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: ilr.9675

ilr.9675

Range can already do well. Sometimes there are bosses you just don’t want to get close to.. Support is kind of a gray area, and conditions suffer from lolfunding issues. Right now, the big weak link in the chain is control.

There are two big problems with control:

#1: You end up getting swarmed with Silver mobs, and nearly every control skill is single target, short duration, long cooldown. It was designed like this due to the fact that in PVP, players hate neverending control chains, so they designed the game to limit as much control as possible. The problem is that when you have a pack of 4 or 5 silver mobs, each one can take away half of your health, and in a gigantic flashing gfx ball you have to pick out one that is going into an animation and quickly interrupt him.

It just isn’t practical. Nearly every control in the game should have an AoE component, or a much shorter recharge. That way you can either stun the whole group, or lay down meaningful stuns very quickly.

#2: Unshakeable. Half the people who play the game don’t know how it works. The other half who do know how it works think it is a stupid mechanic. It was put into the game in order to avoid chain-stunning a boss, and the result is that stuns (again, short duration on long cooldown) just bounce feebly off of the boss and make it so control heavy specs and builds are utterly useless against bosses.

It is bad enough in dungeons, but in the overworld you’ll end up with a champion getting 20 stacks of defiant after being dazed for half a second. This mechanic exists to completely shut down one of the many facets that a player can base their character around, and it is ridiculous. I’m going to borrow from another person’s suggestion here, and just say that Defiant should decay naturally. Maybe, one stack every 3 seconds or so. That way akittens worst Defiant is a hard timer for when you can use control again and akittens best it is much more quickly stripped away in a control heavy group.

Support suffers from a problem where no one actually knows what support is. When a thief uses smoke screen, is that support? Is that control? What do we classify these things as? For now, I’ll divide support into 3 different aspects, and touch on each of them.

Aspect 1: Disabling conditions. These are conditions that are put on the opponent not to inflict damage, but to otherwise inhibit their actions. Cripple, Chill, Immobilize, Blind, Weakness, Vulnerability. Cripple, Chill, and Immobilize are pretty good on their own, capable of slowing own dangerous enemies. There is a problem with the other ones, though: Blind, Weakness, and Vulnerability are all disabled by Unshakeable, working only half as well. With weakness now having short durations on long cooldowns, and vulnerability needing stacks to really contribute, it all but neutralizes the positive effects from these abilities. So basically, condition support is useless on any mob where you don’t have oodles of space to kite them.

Aspect 2: Boons and Buffs. This includes things like stacking might, layering protection, grating fury, etc. For the most part, these are fine if not difficult to build towards.

Aspect 3: Field manipulation. AKA the “others” category. Here I include things like healing, boon removal, condition cleansing, projectile stopping. These are often unsung, since they are only done well by a few classes, and are often hard to do in these classes. In general, healing and group cleansing tends to be a bit weak, requiring full build dedication for little payout in PVE. This can be remedied by making player to player healing more potent, and things are slowly going this way. Boon removal is rarely used, and it is rarely needed, so it ends up being one of those things where its never around when you need it, and when you need it you aren’t specced for boon removal, so making it universally more useful (AKA give enemies more boons) will make them more potent. Projectile manipulation is fine where it is.

A good write up on every thing going on… tho I think you left out Combos even if your “fields” section implies them. Infact I have a theory their general weak nature & short duration is the leading reason that Rangers & Engies are so low on the Totem pole.

Like that the devs are now in the forums

Huh? I don’t want every skill and every trait split I edited my post to add that in there. So I completely agree. with you.

I don’t think any of us expect every single skill to be split either.

…just repeating that b/c Hyperbole tends to go both directions; I’ve noticed lately..

Obviously that would be a huge waste of resources when so many utilities saw very little changes since launch. And not for lack of effort, but lack of necessity. That said, we can ALL point to damage nerfs, or Defensive skills who’s durations were lopped in half… and ask why those changes had to affect PvE & dungeons especially? (or WvW’s case, there’s the compounding issue of Balling up for SAFETY against AOE due to the 5 target limit which is completely counter-intuitive to the “Threat” that an AOE is supposed provide; Ergo, making an already zergy format even Zergier which in-turn just further isolates it from sPVP balance)

What I’m trying to say, is that NOT splitting enough skills, begets a vicious cycle.

Fixed that for ya. I’m fine with taking bribes

Bring one more button to these activities than you are bringing now.

I had a stack of 50 in my inventory. It isn’t about not having enough buttons, it’s about the buff wearing off without realizing it.

This is an issue that bugs me about ALL consumables… that’s there’s no Center-Print middle of the screen text telling you that it just wore off. (yet there’s one for when we open these silly Kite Fortunes???)

Streak Breaker Code would solve this problem… Just start mentioning it in any thread that Smith posts to… or any thread that Colin or Lindsey miiight read.

That basically means a guaranteed success at MFing a Precursor after X failed attempts. How is this a good idea?

How the hell is it a bad idea? We’re getting “Guaranteed Precursors after X amount of Item Grinding” anyway once the Scavenger hunt is finally finished
(plus all new new Legendaries to chase after).

You’re assuming the price of quartz crystals doesn’t shoot through the roof once the Bazaar is gone?

This assumes lots of people haven’t already been “warehousing” stacks and stacks of them like they did with CandyCorn and a few other Mats… And that half of those people won’t keep a lower “Market Watch” price to consistently sell them off at. (Oh online Apps… is there anything you CAN’T DO besides get lonely nerds a much needed girlfriend?)

How much gold to craft a level 11 to level 80

^ +1 … it’s possible to break even … or atleast it WAS before the latest 4 whatever Bazaar and the huge Demand spike put on the market by everyone needing to learn additional crafts to get their pointless awful Celestial Gear just like Izzy has.

Though there’s also a weird anomaly going on right now with certain level 80 Rare 2 handed weapons being bought in mass for upwards of 29s each. The only rumor I’ve seen explaining it is some people forging Precursors out of them or something?? Those might be one possible source for recouping a lot of the up-front investment (12-16 gold??) needed to hit that sweet spot on every discipline.

We are in need of a 3rd main hand weapon

(^Spear isn’t a 1 handed option and this isn’t the Diablo2 Amazon)

I’m very hesitant towards Dual Dagger because it was a real problem in GW1 where Expertise was concerned (which has since then been given to Thieves instead which in turn got their own Dagger “cheese” nerfed hard too).

But yes…. mainhand torch. We need it … been saying this for a while now.

imo, “Longbow and GS” and “not full zerker” don’t mix well.
With LB+GS, you want to be able to dish out huge damage spikes.

I don’t think you understand how EITHER of these weapons work right now then.

GS’s spike damage was only abusable (thus “Viable”) back around Beta.
And LB recently had a major 50% stealth nerf to Barrage’s damage.
Anet is personally trying to tell you… yes YOU, naphack.9346 … that these are CC/survival weapons.

Also: you may have seen a few “10k auto attack” posts around here… It’s safe to ignore those b/c “spike damage” is a joke when it’s on a 60+ second recharge and is easily avoided just by NOT STANDING STILL.

Would it not make sense to bump our raw damage a bit when our pet in a downed state?

It absolutely would not make sense …. and we already get a Might boon for the "pet falls below 50% health* trait anyway which is probably a lot better if you can teeter-totter it between 50% consistently… Sorry, but “Rewarding” Players for neglecting their pets entirely is just plain BAD design and WH should feel bad for doing it.

No what would make a lot more sense is for the Pets to be given SUPPORT SKILLS while they’re in Heel Mode. That way the longer they stay alive, the more boons your whole nearby Party gets. Just look at Reef Drake when it’s switched to Water mode. It gets a Feedback Bubble. Coding that to appear as an F2 skill while it’s in Heel mode personally would take me all of 5 minutes to code and I’m not even well versed in C++

Obviously he’s referring to when the Instance Creator leaves….

This is a sticky issue b/c currently we can also benefit from it when we join a PUG of Guildies that we have no reason to trust…. in many cases lately whom will vote-kick you and probably one other “filler” to bring in their own guild members for a free 60 tokens for people who literally did nothing but “be online and show up” to get them. IoW: kicking the instance owner backfires on them and penalizes their SCAM when you’re the player who did all the Story Modes and then started the dungeon before they could.

^yeah what just happened there?^

We get it that “I quit threads” are against TOS and the OP should have known better.
but there was a lot of important Dev info that got thrown out with the bath water.

I think most of us are patient enough to Wait and see what the new projects bring to the table. But that doesn’t also mean they can’t simply give us a ballpark estimate of how many skills they think they could skill-split for both the betterment of sPvP as well in those rare cases where a skill works better in PvE than in PvP
(some warrior Auto#1’s for example)

That’s fine too…

But hey a Guardian can also play at mid-range if they’re full boon Duration spec’d Buff bots. …maybe depends on the dungeon… but saying that a downed guardian is always some Martyr for maximinzing the group’s DPS is just malarky. If he was as “Elite” as his first comments implied, he wouldn’t have been downed at all. My Guardian has 900 healing and less than 15K hp but rarely gets downed. It’s a class that’s literally invulnerable to everything if you can avoid Panicking and change utils between every fight. … so no, the guy in the Screenshot doesn’t get a free pass just b/c he’s expected to be in Melee.

Do not ignore my response. I am actually really offended that you accused me of saying Warriors and Guardians are the only Melee classes in the game, when my post literally said the opposite.

Sorry to offend. …tho I’m not going to requote you and derail this any further, just comment that your words weren’t nearly as clear as you believe their intent to be.

There are SOOO MANY nods to bit-part Gw1 NPC’s who didn’t do anything cool, all throughout every blasted inch of Tyria2.0… yet I haven’t found 1 single ref to Vael

What’s up with that??

If this happens again when Elona becomes explorable and there’s no mention at all of Bahltek either… their Lore department is going to be recieving some Mysterious Sulfurous Powder… (<— that’s a joke btw referencing the desolation… don’t ban pl0x)
