Reasonable stats for Ranger (WvW)

in WvW

Posted by: ilr.9675

ilr.9675

I use this to farm the hundreds of thieves in wvw. Works amazingly for 1v1 but don’t even bother zerging, it has nothing useful for that.

Best pet name ever.

.

@ OP

My Ranger’s something over 24,000 hp… 1700 tough I think… Whatever’s left is Giver’s/Valk’s gear for perma swift/regen. 1500 pow/prec at best :\

…Only thing I run in WvW b/c I’m only there to shuttle supply usually and pick off other rangers worse than me. I can’t remember the last ranger I saw who was actually a threat. They’re just dreadful and can’t seem to hurt me even with zerkers, or they’re a bit tougher but even more useless than me b/c they don’t have the coordination to rotate the Sword/Greatsword leaps to get between camps faster… bow Zerkers make me facepalm the hardest though b/c many of them don’t even seem to UNDERSTAND what that Whirling Defense animation means … like they’ve honestly never seen or tried it before. Come to think of it, that’s the ONLY kind of ranger I keep seeing in the 4th tier >:p

Basically it doesn’t matter what your stats are from what I’ve seen… 40% of our “Stats” are our Pets… which can’t receive the Stats from our Gear. Therefore 40% of our Stats are not modifiable in any meaningful way and can’t dodge or eat cons or stack regen on themselves either. I don’t even know why I’m pointing this out, it obvious to everyone right?? That’s why were always called “walking baggies”.

Why is the aggro mechanic "secret"?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: ilr.9675

ilr.9675

Because we have no scientist-minded players who want to do extensive tests on each AI to determine their aggro patterns.

It’s not for lack of trying… it’s for lack of CONSISTENCY.

There may actually be RNG elements which wouldn’t be the least bit surprising considering how many other areas of the game (esp rewards) are propped up with RNG.

Time to limit tp profit?

Let me see if I can sum up the base arguments so far, please feel free to correct me on any point.

Argument A ) The high level trading on the TP allows wealth acquisition within the designed limitations of the activity. There is also an acknowledgment that the financial gains from this activity exceed all expectations of wealth acquisition elsewhere in the game. Players should be allowed to acquire wealth far beyond the norm of other activities so long as significant effort is put into doing so and it is allowed by the game designers. There is no double standard of expectation for the activity.

Argument B ) The high level trading on the TP allows wealth acquisition at a rate far beyond expectations set by the developers for an activity in the game. Players should not be allowed to acquire wealth far beyond the norm of other activities if the company designing the game has communicated that they want to limit wealth acquisition of players. There is a double standard of expectations for the activity.

There have been many secondary and tertiary arguments surrounding what I believe are the core ideas brought by both sides. In the end, we may just be arguing about economic ideals (still fascinating that a fictional economy can do this) and whether or not there exists a double standard in how wealth is acquired. Only Anet can answer that last one and from their PR thus far, I am led to believe that they feel there is not.

Couldn’t state it any better….

Though you left out the RNG & Skinnarian conditioning that they also have made sure to load this game up with every chance they get. That may play another large factor in the difference between players who actually CREATE supply, and players who merely “regulate it” b/c they need to feel like they have not only control, but also a higher purpose in their daily lives ever since Real Life got broken by the similar kinds of disparity inducing shenanigans. IE: the bullied, adapt the rational and methods of their bullies, to rationalize and sustain that compulsive position of power.

The control aspect is everything. Anything that threatens it, can even affect the prices in the market (and that seems to happen pretty often). Look at how vocal Mr Smith can be at times. Now imagine if we was sitting where we all are… A similar point could be made about how “powerless” someone might feel in the face of change or conversely the failure to change. Kind of an Inverse Multiplier equation infact.

I think the amount of posts to this topic and breakdown of frequency in posting could even shine some real light on “where the Meta currently is”.

.

Yeah, think that sounds right…I prefer to use the word “Meta” when the system for creating wealth eliminates as many RNG elements as it can and still rewards far and beyond what all competing methods currently available can produce…. (meanwhile LONG TERM investing, which Smith commented on, takes far more risk and experience because you don’t get nearly as many quick “do overs” when a greater period of Randomness occurs)

…..With the inevitable flood of tier 6 …..

hahahaha
Oh wow.

Good try though…..
If you actually look at Colin’s interview on KTR instead for instance, you’ll see what this is really all about… It’s about that whole “making MF account based” and fed on the salvaging of Masterworks & Rares which makes a nice little looping treadmill of “kill Champions to farm more champions with more MF to keep killing more Champions for the same high MF%” …and if they were really clever, it also will cost Ectos to make these MF Consumables. If you look at the price spike of Ectos back around the 20th infact from possible test krewe & insider/press trading, that might possibly be a clue to one of the ingredients even….

Oh and and course it was also about COF and dungeons in general where we all tend to skip most of the unnecessary champ fights. And despite what others would have us all believe here, With the loss of the COF farm, there will actually be less gold in the system (but it will now be slightly more evenly distributed until the flippers re-adjust)

I really am interested in the “Champions give actual loot” feature, since it might make a few fights that are frequently skipped worth considering. Kholer, at the very least.

That’s all going to hinge on whether Anet actually thought this through…

Have they already set it up so that the LOCATION of the Champion also influences its drop table…. but not only that, but the PROBABLITIES in that drop table?

For example: Does some over-farmed Champ in Queensdale have 1/12th of the probabilities for better l00t that a level 60+ Dungeon Champion has?? If not then they already done kittened up and this whole update is a joke.

If it’s only 1/3rd the probability… then they still screwed up, but atleast they recognize that there has to be a difference in loot drop tables and they could make the necessary adjustments as time goes on.

….Also consider how far in the Champion is. For example the second to last Boss in T.A. should probably still give better drops overall than the first Ancient Oozes in Arah P1…. just b/c they don’t want to recreate the opposite situation where people used to farm the first spider boss in TA then leave and reform (which beget the COF farm after that…)

It’s too bad more ppl don’t ever think to check this forum:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/community/events

But still… I took some randoms through SE last week. And I don’t wanna say it was torture, but these were all level 80’s so they should have performed a bit better at it than I did on my all-healing guardian @ level 60 the first time I did it… NOPE. It took almost 2 hours!… Even if we had an LFG tool in-game, I’d predict a lot of failing followed by even more complaining on the forums b/c ….

… well … how do I put this bluntly with out sounding like a total kitt hole?

… Being prevented from finding a team is probably BETTER for a lot of people who’ve never done any of the Story Modes before, than for instance, finding a team of only their peers. (regardless of level). I had the same frustrating experience carrying my own Guild mates through all of them, and these were people who regularly did the Statesman Trial back in City of Heroes. They weren’t new to end-game Raids. And then my Guild before that…. oh god, those were mostly WOW people … they couldn’t even beat TA!!

Maybe if Search & Rescue was on a much faster Cooldown I wouldn’t mind it so much… but I think most people who are basically needed as that 1 dungeon guide who gets a bunch of first-timers through it all (often times now by being the last one standing who soloes that last 1/3 of the bosses HP’s off) … really DO NOT get the reward commensurate with the task.

I think they really built Story Dungeon difficulty ALL WRONG… I think they should have scaled better and done so in several different ways.. Not just in allowing 2-8 players and scaling spawns to that team size, but ALSO fine-tuning the difficulty while you’re doing it based on how quickly your team accomplishes each phase of it. …and then increasing the rewards for how quickly it was done. And not “here’s a ton of silver” rewards, no … lots of crafting Mats to combat inflation, along with stuff like Thread, Coal lumps, Herbs and other things that Newbies really need that they currently have to waste their Laurels on to get any kind “care package” of…

You can drop Alpha almost as fast as the Slave Driver…

Much Faster actually … since 2 out of 3 times you only have to knock 50% of his HP’s off to get him to flee again and another 2 out of 3 of his final encounters he can be glitched in place (great coding Anet!) or just plain pulled & stacked.

So yeah … Alpha needs an overhaul to be made more interesting. People who’ve done him more than 2 dozen times are just desensitized to that reality and resisting change b/c it usually means more timesink being added… like Path2 AC …. which TBH, probably did get padded out all wrong… Ideally a well designed replacement for a DPS check is supposed to be faster or just as fast for the most coordinated & creative teams, (like CM’s Seraph Barrels) … it shouldn’t slow every one to a crawl :p

In laggier situations this actually does nothing…. b/c it feeds your last clicks into the attack Queue as well preventing you from disengaging in time. IE: you’re clicking at a slightly faster rate than the CPU can keep up with in crowded fights, and it behaves just like you had Auto-attack stuck on…

and what’s weird is I’ve never once seen GS or Guardians Swords or Necro dagger autos ever do this. And I can usually keep those on Auto-attack anyway… (they never have this queue priority chain conflict)

You really have to think when you read stuff like this…. like “Didn’t he KNOW 3 months ago that perma stealth would be possible?” …And really, nothing trumps it for raw survival these days… especially when it also removes conditions

Stealth here is honestly starting to get worse than Deadringer spy in TF2 was….
…and really, nothing ever used to top DR spy when it came to “disengage” …

Stealth is only really useful in PvP in low skill brackets

if by that you mean WvW too, then yes… that’s where MOST of the end-game is currently and most of the people doing it are not anti-stealth experts.

It’s funny because… long ago in a land far away… (Guru forums, 2011) we were all commenting that Ranger had no possible role. Some of us thought “Hey why not have Ranger be the Stealth Detector b/c that’s what they’re supposed to be good at?” ….there was even rumor of a Tracking skill from early alpha. NOPE…useless class stayed useless for the vast majority of people in the lower skill curves.

The problem of incentive and reward!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

ilr.9675

I think everyone’s missing the point entirely.

First the Champs are still basically a RNG Box with a mostly TERRIBLE drop table that when you throw enough bodies at it, will get opened. Even a Champ Wraith or Champ Noble/Jester will eventually DIE to even the worst players in the game and not even give a better chance at rewards than the ones I can already solo in 50+ zones on a terribad underpowered ranger … (lol, “group” content)

Second… this is more about COF COIN farming…. they obviously gave up on trying to fix the dungeons after the overhaul to AC just further disenfranchised so many people. So now they’re just going to do what they should have done back in October when it was first pointed out to them that certain paths could be finished in 7 minutes or less <— which made a laughing stock of their Diminishing Returns on tokens… (some actually got precursors from this idiocy by forging the Exotics bought with those tokens anyway!).

.

Someone obviously crunched the numbers. I think we all know who … reading between the lines of his comments in the BLTF could show some tacit admission that inflation “does indeed need to be kept in check”. Well they just nudged that inflation back in the other direction. We’ll see how long it lasts….

Not even the Wiki was capable of that much to the Gnashing of Teeth of those who used it every day to stay in touch with the Devs back then….

The forum presence here is … well it’s pretty good atleast where people like Gaile are concerned. Every now and then Colin actually addresses some important inconsistency as well. (but it’s really rare). Meanwhile we NEVER EVER hear from the Artists when one of the single most pivotal things about this game is the artwork and skins everyone dragon-chases.

…There’s also tons of discussions to be had about PvE balance. Always has been always will be… So where’s the PvE balance team?? They don’t actually appear to have one. I guarantee if they put an opening for that position, they’d have 30,000 applicants by the end of the day and 3,000 of them would atleast know a thief from a ranger or why Berserker’s is scaling 4x times better on damage mitigation than Cleric’s is….

There’s an awful lot of bassakwardsness going on and not a single explanation to be found for it.

Colin on the future of Orr

ilr.9675

I just really hope part of the fixes in the future include those god darn stupid Champion spiders that spawn dozens of hatchlings which provide no loot or exp at all.

True.

On the other hand…

I got halfway to my Veteran kill Daily progress in a single night just by dropping a barrage where they spawned along with all the other endless and unrewarding non-loot dropping mobs in the rest of these Temples…. I’ll probably hit 100% completion tonight. That’s probably a warning sign more than anything else that their D.E. designers are just continuing to ignore, but whatever I don’t care, it gives us something to beat on while we watch the stupid timer tick down…

….Oh boy… this part is hilarious…

We also wanted to give the sense that each temple location was important, that holding them would lessen the influence of the undead in the area by disabling their god statues that made progress in Orr more difficult. It was all intended to lead into a final chain where by disabling all the major god temples allowed players to band together and assault the promenade and defeat the guardian there to gain entrance to Arah.

On NSP we do them in the exact OPPOSITE order… we start at meddlers and march on gates FIRST. Balth’s the last one we do for the night before taking to whole Zerg to Karka land to throw eggs at some overgrown Pokemon.

Why not just gate a (mostly?) “cleansed” version of the Orrian maps behind completion of the PS? Those who’ve completed Zhaitan’s defeat, when zoning in to the orrian zones, are given the option which they want to enter.

This would be awesome… just like Gw1’s Nightfallen Garden of Seborihn(sp?)

IDEA: add post time limit to TP

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: ilr.9675

ilr.9675

PS You are correct, controlled inflation is not a bad thing.

In an environment like this, it’s inevitable. As the game ages, players continue to accumulate wealth faster than it can be taken out of the game. Eventually the items in highest demand will become more expensive just because older players can pay more for them than newer ones.

I think they have a mechanic or two doing it automatically already…
And I don’t like it b/c it punishes everyone or atleast punishes the gem trade.
This is supposed to be a fantasy game, and I think MOST PEOPLE’S FANTASIES include the leeching flipping scuzzy underbelly of any gameable market… being punished more than the casual buyer/seller is.

ilr.9675

I currently have no plans to limit players interaction with the world of Tyria in anyway. I believe it would be damaging to the economy, to the game experience and to the players overall..

We are already limited in the other interactions you mentioned. Some simple examples:

  • one jumping puzzle reward per day per character
  • one world boss chest reward per day per account
  • diminishing returns on dungeon tokens after the first run on each path per day
  • diminishing returns on farming mobs (mystery algorithm used here for security)

I’m not disagreeing with you on your response — just highlighting that we are already subject to restriction in the game to limit wealth that enters the economy.

The TP really doesn’t inject wealth, rather it removes it. So lack of restriction makes complete sense.

And again.. to add to this, we also have lots of limitations preventing us from driving prices DOWN on many commodities in the gamethat HAVE BEEN OVER-INFLATED in the past specifically by flash flippers with large cash reserves … or those who noticed a dryspell in supply and decided to exaggerate it to drive the prices even higher. We have no hedges against this like a real “Free Market” would. It’s like: imagine PvP without Boon-Stripping or interrupts or combobreakers….?? …everyone else in this equation IS limited, while the only limit to Arbitrage is that 15% sink…. No that’s not an even playing field.

We have none of the “financial inventions” more immersing & in-depth markets have to hedge with but we also lack BASIC TOOLS to combat the above problem directly. We have almost no Transparency beyond what Gw2Spidey can provide. And probably worst of all, We can’t simply take a finished product that costs half what= its components cost alone, (like a sword or some food) and break it back down into its commodity components to feed supply back into the Market, no matter HOW MANY LEVELS into that crafting Discipline we have.

Our crafting expertise only lets us put things together in this game, it doesn’t let us take them apart again and that’s a huge Problem when looking at how badly a lot of commodity components seem to just keep going up in price while there’s gluts all over the place of other things that should contain those commodities and be salvaged back out… It’s the main reason IMHO all of Smith’s reality-based math is fairly off.

People take part in an MMO world in different ways, and just with your response John it would seem that ArenaNet does not have an issue with so called power traders (at least that are not exploiting, etc to do so) which if true is a good thing.

Your competitor SOE has talked about some of this with their new game coming up, and one of the things they bring up is making a game where a player is able to spend their time in the world the way they want doing the things they enjoy doing in it.

As they pointed out. Some socialize and level very slowly, others spend most of their time crafting, while there are also those who play the in game markets, and their goal is to create something that has potential for all of those different types of play styles.

In otherwords as the developer they understand that people are going to find their own fun doing various things within their games world, and they want to not interfere with all that as much as possible.

In my experience of MMO’s (going back to EQ1) I have played the biggest complainers about any form of in-game trading there was (East Commons tunnel anyone?) are those who expect to obtain something from others for very little of their own effort.

I have always looked at them as trying to bring some form of “Socialist Reform” to a games economy, and when a game tries to allow for a free market structure allowing players to dictate and set value and worth among each other its just dead wrong.

I have been very lazy when it comes to this game and trying to make money, and for my time spent in it having 120g makes me happy even if its nothing compared to what others may have, and if those others took part in earning money through the TP I can care less. More power to them.

I have not spent time in this games market as I have just been uninterested at the moment due to other things I have been enjoying in the game, real life, etc.

The biggest thing that I see to impede the process though is the inability to sell below merchant prices, as it sets a base that can be high on some items which you don’t want when your goal is to make quick coinage.

See as someone else said you don’t make quick money by selling/reselling and blowing the price sky high off the bat. You find the stuff that goes fast that everyone wants and is easy to come by (harvesting, farming, buying and reselling) and you dump the market.

The faster and cheaper you get it the faster you make a profit by simply marking it up a small %, and you don’t worry about that other reseller who decides to buy all your 1000’s of 3 copper items to try to make 6 copper each on, because when you know what your doing you know to get a fresh supply back up fast and still undercut them from what they just bought. You make fast quick profits, they keep buying up large chunks of your stock (along with others who just need it) that they get stuck with longer and longer hoping to turn an even larger profit. Plus, if they undercut you its no biggie, because now they are losing money.

TBH though those of us doing this would actually be helping a larger chunk of the player base as we would be getting stuff up on the TP at a lower price, and sure we would still have a lot more money than most players, but isn’t that the issue here?

Those who want to restrict the ability can’t stand others having more money, because they chose to spend X hours running dungeons instead of X hours on the TP, or those who just can’t stand that someone else may feel their items are worth X amount as its out of their reach yet many, many, many other players have no issue buying them for that so they continue to sell for the higher price keeping it out of the hands of those who feel that it must only be worth X lower amount, because that’s all they are willing to pay and since they cannot or will not pay X higher amount the seller in some way just needs to be punished.

Honestly, with how many people complain so much about how poor they are maybe you all should ban together and ask ArenaNet to introduce the first (???) “Welfare” system into an MMO game, but TBH all the complainers would still be unhappy every time they got their “Tyrian Welfare Check”, because there still would always be those who had more than they did, and they still wouldn’t be able to afford those rare items they drool over.

wow….
I dunno where you came from but it doesn’t sound like it meshes very well with the Roots of this game. It’s no wonder your own characterization is “being lazy”… Maybe it just wasn’t meant to be? You don’t change that though by tearing down this game’s casual player base.

…more toughness/healing power/vit in order to complete dungeon content? Hardly, only the bad ones will.

He’s talking about farming, not flipping. CoF is currently the most efficient farm in the game.

I wasn’t talking about Flipping either

I agree also the magic find infusion will be useless too.

I’m just waiting to see what replaces it....

As long it’s SOME KIND of stat that helps your +team+... I’ll be keeping mine.
...even if it’s only more Vitality, Crit%, or Boon/Condition duration... Or maybe (hopefully) it will be a new Stat modifier that you can only find on foods or unusual Runes?

I bought the Golden Lotus specifically so I could GET RID of most of my Magic Find gear and replace it with stuff like Valkyries and Givers/of_the_monk

New Fellblades?

What happened to Fellblades being a unique reward?

As long as the clean version is still only obtainable via gw1, then it’ll remain unique.

but if this one looks better, theres no point to it existing anymore since no one would get them

…it doesn’t, it has horrible purplish runes… the darkened 2h Fellblade is unique in its own regard.

As 40/50 HoM, I don’t mind the HoM skins serving as bases for new skins making it into the game. Are you opposed to Jormag’s Breath (IDS) too because of the Fiery Dragon Sword you get at 10 pts? Same skin, just different looks…

but FDS can also be duel wielded.

HOM Fellblade meanwhile is actually very undersized by most Greatsword standards now and can’t be duel wielded (It used to be one of the LARGEST right next to Sage blades & Sephis)…. plus still no animation on it

—> I think there’s real excitement to be had here just b/c You can’t let things get stagnant too long. And the better players who simply adapt to changes quickly (or instantly in a lot of cases here) aren’t worried one bit.

People will still skip just because the Drop rate for any “better mats” is still going to pretty darn bad overall, & then probably get stealth nerfed on top of that as time goes on (just like lot of T2 mats were once Anet decided to punish botters)

.

Skipping as usual

So far it’s really only the Gekkos who come out to play.

Gordon Gekko is about insider trading, this is not about insider trading. Now insider trading is an issue when website get news before everyone else does. Which happens in this game, and that is truly unfair

Wall Street is about insider trading, but Gekko is most famous (IMO) for the “greed is good” speech / attitude. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vscG3k91s58

I think this is what ilr was alluding to.

Almost every post from on this thread has been talking about how how flippers are good. Good for inflation, good for the market, etc… There have occasionally been posters (on other threads long ago) who argued that the rest of us should thank the flippers for making tons of money.

Also, some things are just funny.

Exactly.

Flipping as in the Flash Trade variety that is allowed currently, can only misdirect the market. It CAN NOT, and DOES NOT stabilize prices. All Market data and the “clown colleges” that teach this mentality now in the Real World, base all of their findings off of a rigged CPI. (no this is not a conspiracy theory, this is common sense due to how the entire Government’s future sustainability is based 99% off of how solvent it can keep its current Debt which is linked directly to CPI & a cooked inflation rate).

Every Friday during an odd and uncharacteristic reset here in this game, we get an odd downtick of somtimes up to 15% W^W, in basically the only commodity that the silent majority really cares about. (Gem Prices). This is that covering up of the CPI basically. It wouldn’t even need to occur in the first place if there was more transparency in how flipping is being done and how people could make themselves more resilient against it.

….well actually that’s an oversimplification that maybe gives too much credit to the casual majority… so I take that back. But I think even they could at some point come to understand that the “Speculation is never a bad thing!!” propaganda is all a bunch of astroturf. It’s only real investment and real long term Capitalism (not this fake kind) that both Stabilizes and provides beneficial supply (along with demand) that drives a healthy market and stops the Bubble cycles.

When people think for themselves, and observe, they can actually see it in action regardless of what economic or ideological backgrounds they come from.

I simply got on my Regen Ranger and outlived him while the real lowbies behind me slowly killed Horace. It’s really Binary, just get a level 80 with stacking regen skills and some Endurance Boost food to dodge half his Fireballs. (& instantly lose the burning condition when they hit).

…if you want a nearby lowby event that truly is impossible even for level 80’s, check out that one near the Decimus stones after you blow them up where you have to try and defend some super flimsy ash legion Tents from Mages & Monks with FOEFIRE who usually auto-cast it right on the tents the instant they spawn. ….oh and they just instantly spawn within casting range too. No walking like every other “attack wave” mob in the game… Great design, huh?
