And just to make this clear. I’m not blaming the people that are supposed to be working on sPvP in GW2. This is none of their fault. Someone higher up the chain of command in Anet made decisions that made sPvP the way it is. Those working on sPvP were pretty much given a mission impossible job called: “make sPvP from what we’ve given you” – and what they got is a game designed strictly for PvE. Now they have to balance it all out without disrupting the pve/wvw balance etc.

You won’t be able to match the skill cap of GW1 simply due to the lack of complex prot skills and targeted healing. Team fights are pretty fun in GW2 but the pace of combat is so much quicker than GW1 that you won’t get any of those amazing 20 minute fights at stand with splits and counter splits.

Amazing 20 minute fights are only amazing for the people playing, any viewer would fall asleep unless emotionally invested and that is a large problem. “Skill Cap” should be replaced with “Build Cap” as any game that has auto-approach etc for abilities can never match even the simplest of games that has forced player movement.

“moving towards your target” is now a “skill” in gw2 because there is so little else that qualifies as skillful. in gw1 we had quite a lot of other things to worry about.

edit: there will never be gvg in gw2, the game design can’t support it. only way would be to somehow create a separate mini game, or to release a separate product altogether.

I think most of us have realized that gw2 can’t ever have good deathmatch-style pvp that is anything more than 1-2 players per team. Support is non existent. It’s not even possible to have a cc-based character to help your team get kills or defend them. The #1 rule of gw2 is dps and #2 is bunkering. Any pvp they make in future will necessarily be heavily objective-based, with teamfight always taking a backseat.

What pvp styles fit gw2 gameplay:
1v1
2v2
cap points or other objective
wvw

teamfight and counterplay are not possible

@claim that hotjoin helps teach noobs: it is probably exactly the opposite. they just get farmed until they understand to stay with the group. then they do that and what have they learned exactly? if the default option for new players was “Ranked SoloQ” then there will be even playing field for noobs to play one-another. very simple.

@people who get angry because they play hotjoin: you get spoiled by tons of glory reward from killing noobs 24/7 & leave when it’s going bad for you, creating an imbalance for remaining players. it’s natural you’d be mad, you have everything you want. but hotjoin is a plague on the game and there’s no reason a more structured environment can’t be just as fun and more fair.

I posted something like this months ago.
I told anet to stop kittening around and fix pvp, or they will continue to hemorrhage players.

  1. Disable hotjoin.
  2. Change current Rated Tourny to accept only full team rosters.
  3. Add Rated SoloQ
  4. Add Unrated SoloQ*
  5. Add your stupid LFG tool that has been in development for a year.
  6. Only winning team gets rewards.
  7. Do not show Rank on scoreboard. In fact, replace it with new title you get for winning tournies. (still don’t show it).
  8. Delete scoreboard or come up with better way to score players. (delete is better)
  9. Winning promotes you to next round, losing kicks you to HotM.
  10. Oh, and add Automated/Monthly Tournament system from GW1.

*Unrated SoloQ uses same pool of people as Rated SoloQ. You are placed in grp according to your rating (modified to be lower than normal), but your rating is not affected from wins or losses. Playing Unrated means you get no rewards (or very little). This is to help offset small playerbase. Unrated is for trying new builds or professions or kittening around.

There’s nothing fundamentally wrong with the warrior. Why he’s weak is because bunker setups which spew out AoE are too strong. If you’re going to bunker then fine, have your sustain and go for attrition rather that brute up front damage but don’t then give them the ability to stack might (which circumvents investment into power) while spewing out AoE which is already too frequent and too strong.

Making warrior viable in this mess is going about it the totally wrong way imo. Fix the source of the problem and curtail the AoE.

that is good design and good way to promote teamplay, if only they didn’t make rest of classes so independent (and game mode that requires so much of it).

In a discussion with some WvW guys, we came up with a conclusion as to why people do not come over to spvp. It is not cosmetics of armor or weapons.
The answer is much simpler.
———-They cannot run the same build that they usually run in their respective game format.

What does this mean?
———-They cannot achieve the same stat spread across attack, defense, crit chance, and crit damage.

The end result?
————-The build does not play nearly the same. So effectively it is a different build or a different game altogether.

So why leave my comfortable game mode with the build I know how to play with the stats tailored to what I want?
———-There is no good reason.
And that is why people do not cross game modes.

TLDR: PVE Players don’t want to learn new things or improve their game.

give us 1 gvg map from gw1, with selection of 6 original professions (including monk), each with 15 skills to choose from (max 8 on bar, of course).

keep it simple, no attributes, no traits, can’t choose armor, each class has 1 wep type, (however add energy back)

that also reminds me just how pve this game was designed to be, from bottom to top.
in gw1 they had these same types of problems, even if it was just limited to which builds were more effective in which format. fortunately gw1 was designed properly in a pvp way, so pve skills could still function similarly (even if more powerful).
in order to give a good pvp experience they will have to split many skills again here in gw2, which means this problem will become even worse, and even fewer pvers will ever come join spvp. so a possible conclusion we can draw from this is that maybe gw2 pvp should just completely break off from rest of game. however, this is probably a solution that management won’t tolerate, and so in my eyes this confirms that gw2 pvp will remain second fiddle to the rest of the game, and in fact it may even become seen by pvers as a kind of “cancer” that is affecting their balancing.

i strongly suggest to the dev team to find some way to give pvers a casual pvp experience that is minimally different from their regular pve/wvw builds, and to make a separate game (or in-game minigame (i really liked sab) ) that is more of a proper hardcore team-based pvp experience similar to gw1. these should be 2 separate products ideally, so to have a clean base to work with to make a good pvp.

could you imagine telling your old gw1 friends? “hey guys they made a separate game/minigame that is based on gw1 pvp using gw2 graphics! they have same gvg maps that we used to play!” anet would have instant respect from all of us disillusioned veterans.

wouldn’t it be better to balance it in terms of “can’t take more than 10% (or whatever) max health per second.” so it’s not just a sack of health that multiple people would focus on to kill in 1 second, but 1 enemy could take care of it with no real benefit from having 5 million player atking it.

there is a hidden “rating” they don’t ever show for each player (rlly stupid imo),
you get more of it for winning vs players with high rating than you do for winning vs low rating

I’d like it if you guys could bring up how things are going internally over at anet. From what I’ve heard, many of the gw2 devs have left (most recently/notably Habib Loew). It would be nice to get a bit of assurance on how the office is doing internally. I think we’ve all noticed that content gets put out at a tremendously slow rate (especially for sPvP), maybe this can be attributed to issues with upper management, lack of leadership, or communication in the office? -Some of these posts from anet employees were a bit discerning to read. Would appreciate some clarification on these internal issues, waiting 9 months for a shotty leaderboard and custom games/spectator mode is pretty bad
-especially when these features were announced just after release.

I think the last thing we want is for them to come out and say “Yeah, our studio’s infrastructure is crumbling and it’s super chaotic here and everyone fights”, but I think the players deserve the right to know if the dev team is still as enthused about the game as we are, and if they have the resources necessary to meet our needs.

I didn’t see it mentioned yet, but if they are at all intelligent, they will simply re-implement the exact same mechanic as in gw1.

Basically, it boiled down to:

  • You could leave a match early 1 time every hour without penalty. (like if you dc or you rage)
  • the 2nd time in 1 hour gave you a 10 minute ban from all pvp missions. Logging out did not make it go away, you have to wait in-game for 10 minutes.

Explain to me how introducing punishment measures before fixing this broken record called solo que experience actually helps the game.

the game is trash man, adding punishment to leavers will make it slightly less trash. if you want to rebel against the trash pvp that puts you against premades then just do the smart thing (like me) and play a diff game.

Definitely. At the very least let us spectate tournies in progress.

Since they don’t have the ability to “record” matches, any spectators would have to be actually present in the server to watch the match in real time. That would be bad for tournies because you could “spy” on a team and give info to the other side.

I know why they did it that way in terms of ease of implementation, but it’s greatly misleading in terms of saying that it removes conditions. It should say that it does not remove blind.

Or better yet, they could fix it to work properly:

a) Check if target hit connected minus conditions (it currently checks if hit would connect before burning adrenaline so only a slight change here). If = true, then b)

b) Condi removal check : if blind would be removed due to cleansing ire, allow skill to connect & burn adrenaline.

I strongly agree with exactly what Geff and Empathic Fighter said.

Warrior is actually how all classes in GW2 should be. No cheap moves, no cheap AoE, no 1 button miracles. Work for the kittening kill!! That’s how true e-sports should be like.

Tone down aoe, tone down stealths, illusions and all the crap that’s poluting the game, and we might just see some playable spvp then.

This is SO right on the money. It is almost like they designed the Warrior and Guardian and then outsourced the design of the other professions to the “B” team.

I really find it hard to believe all the professions were designed by the same team.

On the first day, DEVTEAM designed the warrior, and it was good.
On the second day, DEVTEAM decided warrior was OP, so they designed rest of the classes to be able to survive vs warrior.
By the end of the 7th day, DEVTEAM forgot that warrior existed.

To be honest. Warrior is totally design fail in pvp. (poor to cure condition, no roaming etc.)
Anet should redo the warrior design concept and make it more viable for pvp.

warriors are unviable because all other classes have over-the-top specs.

1600 gems for custom arena

CA represent a collection of basic and advanced features for monthly gem payment.

  • The BASIC FEATURES of selecting a map and some friends to play against should NEVER be a paid feature. How else can a player do this without someone having paid gems at some point? Completely unacceptable! (esport here we come)

We should have simple access to an arena that is spawned when we request it and disappears after we all leave. GW1 has this as the basis of all pvp in the entire game. (Which btw, is all free).

I will go through the “features” now anet wants us to pay for:

Custom Arena Name — Don’t care
Password — Wouldn’t be needed if arena was private to those that spawned instance
Message of the Day — Don’t care
Team Size — Basic Feature (Teams locked to those that entered together)
Score Limit — Don’t care
Time Limit — Don’t care
Respawn Time — Don’t care
Respawn Type: (Wave vs. individual) — Don’t care
Minimum players — Don’t care
Reserved Slots — Don’t care
Spectators: Y/N — Would be nice but don’t rlly care
Ready Button — Basic Feature if this is what I think it is, otherwise Don’t care
Auto Balance — Don’t care
Lock Gear — Don’t care (should be default to Yes)
Lock Skills — Don’t care (should be default to Yes)
No Stats — Don’t care
Map selection — Basic feature
Member players — Don’t care
Member Guilds — Don’t care
Banned Players — Don’t care

If you keep thinking about why these Custom Arenas are “always on” and you pay regardless whether someone is playing or not, it really seems like Anet wants you all to fund hotjoin. Now think about how many empty hotjoin servers there are and ask yourself: “wtf?”

They are making you pay for BASIC FEATURES like playing vs your friends. How is the world is that acceptable? Sure, sure, you say it is like a server that you pay monthly for like in other games — but WHY DO WE HAVE ALWAYS-ON SERVERS AND NOT TEMPORARY INSTANCES (like in gw1)?

Furthermore they hide behind saying “Oh it’s just gems so you don’t have to pay money” but as already discussed in this forum, PVPERS CAN’T MAKE GOLD OR GEMS. And to the people talking about laurels: no, I am not spending a unique currency that has interesting rewards for when I may want to do some pve on an overpriced basic feature.

Answer to a new player: “How can I vs my friend?” and you have to reply “Well, first you got to get 1600 gems… or maybe find some generous guild that will allow you to have some short amount of time on their server. But you can’t really keep doing that because then that guild can’t use their server for their guild purposes!”
