Sorry, waiting 24/7 isn’t the answer.

What’s with this temple defense, is it some group that’s trying to control temple events?

Loot is better from killing tons of mobs over and over compared to a single, once a day chest from killing the priest.

And waiting is the answer, it just isn’t the one you wanted to hear.

You go to a map and hang out until the events are up.

If you need to attack a temple (for trait or loot), kindly ask the map players to do an attack run. In my experience, most players will oblige a polite request. If you find there are players unwilling to lose the defense event, you can get enough players to stand at the event and scale it up so that the defenders are overrun and lose.

Frankly, I am even wondering why this thread is not in the “Black Lion Trade Post” forum, or even in “General Discussion”. The “Players Helping Players” forum is just about the last place to choose in order to post a suggestion to the game developers. After all, it is mostly frequented by helpful players who are friendly enough to point out potential flaws in such suggestions/opinions.

I’m wondering why it isn’t in the “Trashcan” forum.

What sets the Gold->Gems price?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: mtpelion.4562

mtpelion.4562

As long as the average player prefers to convert gold into gems rather than buy gems and convert them to gold, the gold per gem price will tend in increase.

Once we reach the point where the average player goes either way, the gold per gem price will plateau.

If we reach the point where the average player prefers to spend real money on gems and converts gems into gold, the gold per gem price will decrease.

The fact that gold to gems is trending up in price indicates that the average player still prefers to trade gold for gems.

Dark Matter

mtpelion.4562

You’re doing nothing wrong… Dark Matter is pretty expensive to acquire thanks to the RNG involved. Over enough salvages, it should average out to around 0.5 Dark Matter per exotic. 20 exotics is such a low number of salvages that you are susceptible to bad streaks that will discourage you.

I’m not convinced. The last stats I read said the average rate of return of ecto for level 80 rares was about 0.9/salvage. Currently, those same rares (Staffs anyway) sell for about 60s each (minus the cost of making them, of course). This is up quite a bit since the patch, when they averaged closer to the same cost as ecto, where ecto is only about 37s. It would seem more cost effective to sell the rares and buy ecto than simply salvaging them.

Either way, with only cost being my time to collect the mats, putting the crafted stuff in the forge is as good a use for them as any. I don’t have a lot of patience, so I only do 5-10 combines at a time anyway.

Here’s my post from 2 weeks ago with the methodology for determining the cost effectiveness of sell/salvage for rares. I did say “typically” too, because I intended to leave room for the rares that do sell for more than the break even point:

To find out if you should sell or salvage a rare item, do the following:

1. Multiply the current Ecto price by 1.125 (this is to offset the 87.5% chance to get an Ecto by salvaging using a Master kit, and thus a 12.5% chance to NOT get an Ecto).

2. Next, multiply the result from 1. above by 1.15 (this is to offset the 15% trading post fee that you will pay to sell your Ecto).

3. The result is the Break Even point for Ectoplasm and is the amount that you must sell a rare for in order to acquire the equivalent amount of ectoplasm via gold.

4. Add the cost of using the Salvage Kit (a Master would be 61c per use)

Here is an example, using the current Ecto price of 35s70c:
((3570*1.125)*1.15)+61=4680

You will need to charge MORE THAN 46s80c for a rare in order to sell it instead of salvage it.

You can further analyze this number by using the likelihood of salvaging materials and runes/sigils to offset the price above, but that’s outside the scope of a quick formula for an at a glace decision to sell or salvage.

Constant Emails about resetting my PW

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: mtpelion.4562

mtpelion.4562

If someone stole your GW2 account, it is because of 1 of 3 things:

1. You used a very weak password and your account was accessed via a brute force attack.

2. You used the same password for GW2 as some other site that was compromised which basically allowed someone to simply type in your email address and password.

3. Your email account has been compromised and the “hacker” simply requested a password reset and logged in.

For safety purposes, change your password for your email account BEFORE you change your GW2 password, then submit a ticket to ArenaNet by clicking on “Support” at the top of the page and request that your account be tied to a new email address.

You can also request that your account be rolled back in order to reclaim your stolen items.

The 2 Step Authenticator will prevent new IP addresses from being added to your “allowed” list, which will help going forward but won’t lock out a “hacker” who is already in your account.

Everyone gets 50 character slots, and the same number of bag slots. Bank slots are available for a trivial in game currency fee.

It’s been ages since I last played WoW, so I may be confusing some aspects with the last P2P MMO I played which was SWTOR, regardless:

The 50 slots are game wide, isn’t there a restriction of 10 per server? If that cannot be increased, then it’s a moot point for comparisons.

If you can’t increase bag slots, then it’s moot for comparisons as well.

For bank slots, you can grind coin in both games to do this, so they really are the same thing.

Extra character slots, bag slots and bank slots are NOT included in your monthly subscription fee, so that’s an invalid comparison.

For me, annoying is seeing a monthly charge on my credit card, regardless of whether I feel that the game has provided me with that value in content over the month.

With this gem store, I can buy what I want, if I want to .. and if I don’t, I know I can still play the game and enjoy it just as much.

What is it that you feel that you are missing out on by not owning all of the items in the snippets?

Do you also feel annoyed when you see that internet or Netflix charge? Obviously impossible to get your money’s worth because you can’t use these 24/7.

In WoW, if I want a certain piece of gear I can go run the content. If I want a certain piece of gear here I have to spend real money. Why even play?

The big difference is that in WoW you HAVE to get that new piece of gear because it has improved stats (the “gear treadmill” concept that keeps you paying every month) while in GW2 the only reason you would get that new piece of gear is because you like the look of it.

That’s funny because I don’t feel ripped off. I don’t have a problem paying a sub fee for a service I value and I enjoy playing a game where I don’t see “buy now” buttons or otherwise feel like I’m being herded into the cash shop.

Yes, you can buy gems with gold. But look at the conversion rate, and how the game tends to reward you for actually playing it. I value my time and I play games to have fun, not to grind currency for cosmetic items that should be obtainable in game in the first place. It’s easier to work a little more at your job and just buy the gems instead of playing the game. Do you think that’s a good feeling for a game to give its players?

That’s fine that you don’t feel ripped off, but if you truly valued your time, you’d see that by default GW2 gives you a better time/value ratio than any subscription game because it is going to be:

([Life of Account in hours played]/[$60])

whereas a subscription game will be:

(([Life of Account in hours played]/[$60])+(([hours played in month]/[$subscription fee])*([number of months in Life of Account])))

Extreme Precursor Inflation

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: mtpelion.4562

mtpelion.4562

Considering that the default is to sell to the highest buyer, I have to imagine that the majority of Precursors are sold to a buy offer, not listed on the market. This means that the ones that are listed do not accurately reflect the price of a Precursor and are mainly a trap for people with more gold than brains. Anyone who understands the basics of how the TP works will always buy their Precursor via a buy order, saving a king’s ransom in gold.

So then the question becomes, are there enough wealthy, non-thinking buyers to sustain a price push?

I think the answer is “no”. You can push the price if you have the capital, but due to the way most Precursor buyers operate, your push won’t last long and you will lose money.

I really don’t see how people prefer to be nickel and dimed than just pay a traditional, trivial, sub free and get access to everything in game.

False Dilemma Fallacy Detected.

I don’t prefer to be “nickel and dimed”, so I’m not. In a P2P game, you must pay to access all game content. In GW2 which is B2P, you pay once and then have unlimited free access to all game content.

In order for a B2P model to work, ADDITIONAL items are offered for sale. As long as these additional items are purely cosmetic or convenience items, they are not content. Furthermore, as long as you can convert your free game time into currency that can be used to buy these additional items, they can’t even nickel and dime you for those unless you want to shortcut to the items and pay cash.

Subscriptions were from a time when internet gaming was young and the equipment was insanely expensive and thus required a commitment from the user (similar to cell phone contracts being used to offset the actual price of your “free” phone). In today’s world, the only thing a subscription guarantees is that you are getting ripped off every single month.

You mean investing more time? But then we got a deadlock because not everyone can spare more time, I bet many people complaining about this system can’t play that much, EVEN if someone who plays just a little has dropped a precursor, we talk average not isolated cases.

I think that in general, time invested isn’t the problem, it is the fact that you don’t feel as though your time invested is actually doing anything until it suddenly pays off.

Using a method in which you slowly accumulate your Precursor lets you visually see your progress as it happens.

It really isn’t any different from the current method of obtaining gold to buy a Precursor in terms of time (well, maybe less time depending on the rate of inflation), but it actually gives you feedback letting you know that you are progressing which makes the time investment seem less daunting.

And dawn and dusk from mystic forge after non stop 1800 lvl 80 rare gs

Karka event gave you a nice boost in Magic Find (like 200%, I think?), so yeah, you were “lucky”

The “best” way to get a Precursor is to maximize your chances. This means either dumping items in the Mystic Forge or maximizing your kills per hour while running high Magic Find.

Doing normal gameplay will give you very few rolls for a precursor, which is why many people are able to play the game since launch and never see one. Essentially, if you want to increase your odds of winning the lottery, you have to buy more tickets. Only problem is that buying more tickets involved really boring gameplay.

a lot of people wouldnt mind increased cost of parts, because those are shorter term goals, you can target, or they have known ways of obtaining them.

T6, drops from high level zones/bags and you can upgrade t5 to get, as well you can use laurels
Orichalcum mineable, salavageable
stones is the hardest part, but you can hunt elementals, or you can hunt specific bags, also different dungeons generally have some means, and champion bags also give it.

point is, what people dont like, is not being able to work towards it in any non super rng way. As far as saving gold, doesnt really work out due to inflation. While every charged lodestone you get gets you 1/100 closer to your goal no matter what, Every gold you earn does not necessarily get you closer to a precursor. You can use random number generators in games, but if you are going to go to like 1/1000 levels, you create a large variation in attainability.
since legendaries a currently the main elder game goals, this becomes a problem

I would also like the legendary system to be more incremental in nature, however if we shift the majority of the cost to the T6 fine materials, it will impact all players heavily while the legendary builders wouldn’t really be impacted at all (the overall cost to them would be similar, just spread out more).

I think a better solution would be “Precursor Shards”. Every Precursor Forge attempt should drop a shard. Save up enough shards and you can trade them in for a Precursor. The cost would still be high, but you’d be building progress with every gamble.

So yeah, making a legendary contingent on a single very rare drop is a terrible system. On the other hand chances are good that you will do more than the amount expected to get a precursor and still not get it without the RNG being broken.

On the flip side, making Precursors more available would increase the number of people working on a Legendary which will increase demand for the parts. If we increase the demand of already rare parts (the t6 fine materials), the price will rise.

Basically, right now it costs a lot of gold to complete step 1 (“get a precursor”). If we make step 1 cheaper, then you’ll have a lot of people who have completed step 1 and now need to complete step 2 (“get T6 fine materials”). All we’ve done is shifted the cost to step 2, so you’re really no closer to your goal at all, you just feel a bit better about your progress because you were able to check off a cheap step 1.

Wrong. There is no secure interface for trading between individual players. Hence the need for an interface to do so. It’s clear in how the game works. There is no imaginary distinction. The auction house is solely for trading to the public. You cannot use it to trade with individual players. It is currently not possible to trade with another player without using the mail system. Once one player gets a item, there is nothing to stop him from leaving without fulfilling his end of the bargain.

If you really think you can do it on the BLT, then go in the game, and find another player you want to trade with on your imaginary interface. In actual reality, it’s impossible as the BLT only allows you to list items for sale to public that all players have access to.

The fact that you don’t know who the individual player you are dealing with is doesn’t change the fact that you are trading with an individual player.

If you want to trade items with a specific player, then you have to use the mail system. If you can’t trust that player to not cheat you, then it would be pretty stupid of you to want to trade with them in the first place.

All transactions on the Trading post occur when an individual player buys or sells to another individual player.

You’ve created an imaginary distinction (public versus individual) and are using it as the basis for your entire argument. That renders your conclusions and arguments illogical because your basic premise is just flat out wrong.

There is absolutely no point to have a player to player trading interface because there is already a MUCH BETTER player to player trading interface in the game.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Old news. You can still put it in the forge for the possibility of getting something salvageable.

The problem is that certain sets (namely WvW sets) may have valuable upgrade items applied to them, but it is impossible to extract them using a BLTC salvage kit, forcing people to buy the more expensive upgrade extractors.

Just an FYI, there is no scenario in which you can justify the cost of using an Upgrade Extractor to pull out a Rune/Sigil/Orb/Mark. It is always cheaper to buy a new one. Upgrade Extractors work for high powered infusions because those can run into the hundreds of gold making it worth it to save them.

That said, I do think that gear that cannot be salvaged should have a red text note in the description.

TP killing real mmo fun

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: mtpelion.4562

mtpelion.4562

The OP speaks from the standpoint of the extreme hardcore PvE player. That is but a small microcosm of the player community.

TP is essential for a WvW based player who simply doesn’t want to run around killing all those mobs in all those dungeons just so they can hang out with a group of friends and kill other players. That player wants the convenience of a TP.

The casual PvEr who would not be able to get competitive wants a TP.

Essentially, all but the hardest core PvE player should want a TP. It is an option. You can always go get your gear the “slap a mob” way.

Even hard core PvE players want the TP, since that’s how they make their money too. Farming requires other players buying your stuff.

The people who dislike the TP do so because of either a lack of understanding of the basic economic concept it relies upon, or because they have a fundamental philosophical belief that contradicts free market principles.

There is no valid argument for not having a trade interface.

I already gave you the most valid argument. Player to Player Trading is unnecessary because it is obsolete.

Get with the times man, the Trading Post is how you trade things in today’s world.

no it is not the nature of the game, its how the game is now, dont assume things cant be changed, also as i said in my OP (which u clearly didnt heed) i am NOT the seller in this scenario

Your suggestion is designed to reward sellers who priced their product too high. You may not be the seller, but that’s irrelevant. Your idea is unnecessary, adds nothing positive to the game experience, and promotes market inefficiencies.

The point I was making above is simple: if I can undercut you by 1c then you listed your item too high by at least 1c. Why would you want to reward the guy who listed too high instead of the guy who is offering you a better deal?
